Dined here as a last minute dinner idea. I am typically not a fan of venturing into new to me Mexican restaurants. This place had amazing food, girlfriend and I were both very impressed. Best Mexican food I have ever had, people were very friendly and attentive. This is now my go to Mexican restaurant. I had the Pollo Gellero, my girlfriend had the Enchiladas Blancos. All was very good.

Don't waste your time going here. The food: It's ok. Nothing to write home about. It's not the best or the worst. We had the Pollo Guerrero BTW. The service: Slow. The host (if that's what you'd call him) could care less if we were there. It almost seemed like we were bothering him. The waiter was a douche. Popped collar, no personality, and not very efficient. We watched him check one table, go get what they needed, come back, drop off what they wanted, wander around for a bit, check on another table. This was our first time there aaaaand it'll probably be the last. Maybe if someone else was footing the bill, we might go back. Hope this review helps.

Great food & portions, very reasonably priced, good service, it was my first time there & I ordered the enchiladas verdes (chicken), we would go again next time we're in town. Basic, hard bench seat booths, ok atmosphere

I headed to Elkhart for work this past week and was interested in learning what restaurant choices would be available. Me and my office roomie stumbled upon El Camino Real and were pleasantly surprised! The service was quick and, like many Mexican restaurants, we were given a basket of chips and a bowl of salsa. Delicious. Now, on to the main course. I was in the mood for enchiladas and rice. The main lunch dish included beans, but I opted for more rice. No beans for me, please. For $20 total, we were both filled to the brim and completely happy with our meals. Elkhart, you have a lovely restaurant and I'll be sure to return when I'm in the area!

First off we were directed here by a local person. Over all the food was pretty good. Wife had a chili relleno plate and I had a combo plate. Chili relleno, shredded beef taco and an enchilada. To drink, I had a Negra Modelo beer and my wife had a regular margarita on the rocks. She said the margarita was ok. The store was clean and service was good. We would return.

Pretty standard mexican restaurant. The service was quick and the chips and salsa were great. Chips were freshly made and the salsa had just enough kick. I ordered the chili colorado and it was mediocre. The red sauce was tasty and spicy but the beef was simply grilled and covered in the sauce. The dish would have tasted far better if the beef had been slow cooked in the red sauce because it was terribly dry and had little flavor other than being covered in sauce. For the price of the meal it is not really a big deal, I would go back, but doubt I would order the Chili Colorado again.

What about the food??? Previous reviewer has given El Camino Real a bad rap. This is one of our favorite places to go - for food. If you are looking for Margaritas, forget it, as there is no liquor license, so of course they are bad! Entrees are consistently good. Everything we have tried is fresh, tasty and delicious. Service is also very good and always prompt. Manager is not personable, but always have been seated quickly and cashed out without a wait.

I was not very happy with the food here. As soon as we tried the salsa I was starting to doubt how good the food would be. It was not very flavorful and I had to ask for lime and put more salt to try to get it to taste better. I had the fajita bowl and it was just ehh ok. My husband had their biggest burrito and it was just ok for him as well. Everything was just kind of bland. Mexican food should have some different spice and my mouth was watering for that awesome Palette that Mexican food brings out for me. Unfortunately this place did not do it for me:(

Nasty Margaritas, bland food and bad service. The fish tacos were bland but most importantly, their margaritas taste disgusting. i would probably give another star if the margarita was decent. It IS a Mexican restaurant and generally the margaritas aren't too bad at Mexican restaurants - but really, DON'T find out for yourself, it tasted like moldy mix- I couldn't drink more than 1/4 (I really really tried) and when I told the manager that it tasted very strange. He said "No it doesn't. It tastes fine." I asked if he's tasted it recently, he says, "Yes, everyday." Right dude. Regardless I ordered something I didn't like, i didn't even drink it, I tell you it's really bad and you just say, it's fine, too bad. I think that's bad customer service. Plus when we sat down, there was hardly anyone in there and we waited at least 10 minutes to have our order taken while the manager sat nearby watching videos on his cell phone. There are better Mexican restaurants in town - don't go to this one, be a patron to one that has better food and better service.

We entered the front door and the man to greet us just ignored us/seemed to not care we were there. No "hi" or even a "hola!" Once seated we quickly ordere our usual enchiladas blancas with the greatest cheese sauce ever put on an enchilada. What we got was enchiladas crapola. They covered them in some ranch sauce thing that was just nasty. We informed the waitress that this was not what we ordered. The waitress replies "oh no. Not again. We had another customer say the same thing just days ago." Here we go....we were told that is what we ordered and that is the enchiladas blancas. My 9mth pregnant wife, who is not to be messed with when it comes to her food while pregnant, tried explaining to her that its a cheese sauce, not ranch. The waitress came back with "sorry, but thats what you ordered. Would you like me to get a menu and show you?" I now began to try to hide under the table knowing this girl had no idea what my wife was capable of. We told her numerous times they must have changed it because this isn't right. All we kept getting was "It's what you ordered." She went about her rounds, and oddly enough didn't return for quite awhile. When she did, she asked how our meal was. "Really? Haven't we complained enough to you?", I thought to myself. My wife was quick to say she wasn't satisfied at all with her meal and the waitress tried one more time to drive it home that the meal was exactly as ordered so she went to get a menu. When she returned 7-8 minutes later, she didn't have a menu in hand but promptly said the menus had not been updated in the past year but the meals had changed. We, in fact, did NOT get what we ordered. So it comes off the bill right? Nope. It is what it is and the restaurants mistake is our problem. No compensation for the meal that could not be stomached. Not even a slight discount! We waited another 20 minutes for the bill with no drinks or food to keep us satisfied. My wife was fed up so she walked out to sit in the car while I waited. I waited another 10 minutes for the bill while the waitress kept taking drinks from the visible soda fountain to the employees only area. She finally came by and asked if I wanted the bill, and I took the time to let her know my wife wasn't happy. Sorry was all I got. Who goes home with the 9mth pregnant lady who is hungry? Me. Sorry isn't going to cut it. I immediately walked up to pay my bill and the front counter guy and all other employees were standing in the kitchen just laughing and ignoring their customers. Five more minutes passed and I had enough so I said enough is enough and walked out. They wasted my time and obviously didn't need my business so I will not be going back!

Had a great experience here during lunch on a Saturday. Great service. Waiter was attentive but didn't hover over us. Food was tasty and fresh. Prices are good and the place was clean. Will return soon.

I moved away from northern Indiana some 10 years ago. I've lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco since then where they are reputed to have pretty good Mexican food. But I can say that hands down the quesadillas de carne asada at El Camino Real are the best I've ever had. I've scoured restaurants in these two great west coast cities for something comparable, but as of yet have been unsuccessful. I doubt that people in Elkhart/Goshen know how lucky they are to have this place. Again, if you go there try the quesadilla de carne asada. It's delectable. If I were lucky enough to have a private jet I would fly there once a month just to eat this dish.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
