Love this restaurant! Nothing like it in the area. I love anything with the carne asada (especially the fajitas), and my husband is beyond obsessed with the shrimp tacos. Excellent margaritas and guacamole as well! The owners, Hilda and Ruben, are wonderful. We live in Cedar Lake and make the trip often because the food is that great :)

well i been back to this place a couple of times already and i must say im impressed. though their menu does not include many dishes the ones i had where pretty good although i tend to stick with the fajitas cause they are awesome! i only give it 4 stars due to the lack of their menu variety

My husband and I loved this place! The salsa is delicious, the margaritas are strong and inexpensive, the food is authentic and high quality. I loved the Hilda's margarita. Who puts Grand Marnier in a $6 margarita?? Ruben's does! My husband had a strawberry margarita that was made with REAL strawberries! I had the shrimp fajitas and my husband had the carne asada. Both were inexpensive and very flavorful. The clincher? Homemade tortillas! We are definitely returning!

The food is very good, authentic and not bland. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Love the Al Pastor Pork Tacos with adobe sauce. The new margaritas are made with real juice and not the cheap mix.

Absolutely delicious! We had the cheese /pepper dish for an appetizer and it was scrumptious. I ordered an egg dish which was a speciality of theirs and could not finish it because of the huge portions. Everything was great...salsa, chips, enchiladas , flan, service, ambiance. This definitely is a " go back to" restaurant because all of the pieces fit together so well. Our waiter was more than helpful too. Prices more than reasonable. Highly recommended.

Great food my husband and I always order the fajita combination for two (steak & chicken). One suggestion order steak medium. Very delicious there is enough for lunch the next day! It's like you went to Rubens house for dinner homemade tasting minimally processed! Second time here having this same dish, will go back in the future! Have to try something else!

The very best Mexican food in Northwest Indiana! Sometimes the wait is long, but only because the food is made to order. Just enjoy some chips and salsa with a few Tecates until it arrives. Staff is amazing. Highly recommended

This is real deal authentic Mexican food. Fresh to order. Nothing generic, nothing canned. Most days you'll see Ruben or his wife Hilda and them greet you with a smile. Ruben had opened restaurants as an executive chef around the world and his expertise is apparent at his restaurant. The prices and extremely reasonable, food is cooked quickly and to order. My favorite are the pork (pieces) and carnitas (shredded pork). Their taco packs to go are also great and allow you to assemble the tacos at home with your loved ones. I can't say enough good about this place and hope you'll give it a try so you can see the same.

This place is the freshest and most delicious Mexican restaurant in NWI! All of the tortillas are made fresh. The margaritas are priced perfectly. Their salsa is my favorite they roast the veggies they make it with; the other sauces are also equally delicious. It is a small place with small menu but the service is always great and it's reasonably priced.

Nice little neighborhood spot. Not very many tables, but luckily we didn't have to wait. Tasty salsa with just enough kick without being overly spicy. Food was solid--not overly huge portions that my husband prepares, but quality was excellent--could taste the fresh ingredients. The kicker was their special pineapple margarita--I'd never seen a pineapple margarita on a menu before, so I had to try it. Yum! Again, very fresh tasting, not one of those overly syrupy sweet margaritas out of a bottle that you find at so many Mexican places. Good quality tequila in the margarita, too. One wasn't very strong, so I had a second.

Love it! Salsa, Drinks, Apps, Mains, and Desserts--- yes, I have tried a lot. Holy cow, I have yet to put a bad bite in my mouth! The couple times I have been there with others, they have also been pleasantly satisfied. The guacamole was excellent, I loved the nachos, the Carnita's was probably my favorite thing (and I LOVED the margarita I had) so- go, try stuff, and if you need a partner- hit me up!

My party of three stumbled upon Ruben's after a day of exploring Northwest Indiana. Let me just say that everything about Ruben's was great. The place is very clean and inviting. The wait staff was extremely polite and helpful. I'm not just saying this, I mean it! Our waiter answered all of our questions, was very polite and attentive. The food itself was delicious in every respect. From the chips and salsa to the steak tacos, fish tacos and rice/beans, it was absolutely perfect. On top of all of that, it was very affordable. I would without any hesitation recommend this restaurant to anyone. Delicious.

The food here is always so fresh, best salsa in the area. The horchata is made fresh...you can taste it. The margaritas are to die for...best place for Mexican food in this area.

Ok.... I celebrated my husband's birthday there yesterday! I had the best steak and shrimp fajitas EVER! The difference between this mexican restaurant and some others is that you don't need to drench your meat in sauce to give it flavor!! Their margarita's are made to order with fresh squeezed lime juice and you look forward to the new flavor next month! The taffy apple is the bomb! : ) Get your girlfriends together for a margarita night!! Bring your family! This place needs to be celebrated! We are SPOILED in Dyer!! : )

During a recent visit to the area, my wife and I tried Ruben's for dinner and were very satisfied..... Overall, the wait staff was friendly, very attentive and knowledgable. The food was authentic and very good.... if you like Enchilada's you got to try them with the carnitas filling (excellent). However, if you order Enchilada's, I would recommend that you order 3 instead of 2 because they are a little on the small side. Bottom line is that we will definitely return when back in the area.

This place serves the best Authentic Mexican food in northwest Indiana. I've had several dishes and all have been great. I highly recommend the fajitas that come with homemade tortillas. They also serve alcohol which makes this a good place to relax, eat dinner and have drinks. You must try the mango margaritas! This place is also super clean and kid friendly with great service.

YUMMY! Great Food and Service!! The food is very authentic. Had the guacamole as an appetizer, very fresh and delicious. Just added carnitas to the menu. I had carnitas fajitas, it was melt in your mouth delicious. Left there stuffed with leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Everyone agreed their food was delicious. The margarita's were fantastic, and prices were very reasonable. This was our first visit and we will definitely be back.

Went to this place for the first time today and was very pleased. This restaurant is located in a small cute corner space in a little plaza . Walked in got seated right away. The restaurant was clean, the servers were nice. On Sundays they had a special for kids were they eat free with any adult entree. I had the 3 taco dinner plate, my husband had the burrito plate, one kid got the chicken strips with fries ( I know, we are at a Mexican restaurant, but this kid is hard to please) and my other kid got a cheese quesadilla. They had the best tasting steak meat I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The rice and beans were good, I've had better, the horchata was good and the steak burrito was good, my husband liked that it was lightly grilled. The kids liked there meals, my son couldn't finish his quesadilla it was kinda big for a kid. I didn't care much for the salsa that was given with the chips when we sat down. We spent under $30.00 with tip for a family of 5. The meals are between $7.00 to $16.00. The bathrooms were clean and did have a baby changing station. Overall liked it, would go back again and I LOVED the steak. = )

Better than average food, decent service. Atmosphere is just ok with poor overhead fluorescent lighting. Good margaritas. Overall, not too bad for the area.

Such a great restaurant. Everything was so fresh and it was even a Thursday when we went. My bf had the Carne Asada and he says it was some of the best he's ever had and we've eaten at several mexican restaurants and this was by far one of our favorites.

Drive by this place all the time and finally decided to stop in for dinner. Loved it. I started my dinner with an orange margarita (since it was Wednesday, got it half price). The margarita was made with fresh squeezed oranges and not overly heavy on the sugar which made it the best margarita I've ever had! It was perfectly refreshing for a warm summer evening. For dinner I had the taco salad with chicken. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and it even came with a side of guacamole. My husband had the steak burrito dinner and was also very happy with it. And a big plus is that we didn't find our dinners loaded with fatty chunks like we do at other Mexican restaurants. I disagree with the previous post on the chips and salsa. The salsa tasted very fresh and wasn't loaded with salt like many other salsas out there. Great service, the entire staff was very attentive! Can't wait to go back!

Best Mexican restaurant in Northwest Indiana. What a find. Fresh food, layers of flavors and grilled to perfection. Ample gluten free selections and very friendly staff. Clean washrooms and dining area.

This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant in the area! The service and food were great. My husband enjoyed his margarita on the rocks. We started with the Queso Blanco. I generally prefer queso dips that are more nacho cheese consistency over the fundido kind that is melted cheese in a skillet that hardens when it cools. This dip was somewhere in between both of those and it was fantastic! It came on a skillet with roasted peppers and onions in it and it stayed melted the whole time. For my meal I had the veggie enchiladas, one red and one green. It had well seasoned roasted veggies in it. For the vegetarians out there the beans and rice are both vegetarian and tasted great. My husband had a taco combo with al pastor and steak tacos and said it was really good. Our friends also enjoyed their carne asada and chicken taco dishes, although the chicken was a bit over salted. They have great homemade red and green "hot" sauces (not hot though). I wish they had really spicy hot sauce. The only things I didn't really care for were the salsa and I would skip dessert too as the strawberry cream cheese crepes dessert my friend ordered was bad.

Queso fundido is an absolutely must. I typically get that, the guacamole (which is pretty good), the steak burrito (ahich is good, but a little dry at times). Although I call it dry, that is a testament to the fact that they use good ingredients that don't necessarily give off all the fat of cheaper meat. Everything is made to order and thst is wonderful. The margaritas are also awesome. The only reason for the drop in stars is the fact I sometimes like the greasier stuff.

Margaritas. Awesome. Fajitas de Pollo..awesome. This is authentic Mexican food. TORTILLAS FROM SCRATCH ! I shall return.

Let me explain the 5 stars before I get any hate messages. I judge my Mexican restaurants on a few categories. 1. Margaritas 2. Neighborhood (As in...Am I able to grab something better/cheaper right next door) 3. Service 4. Cleanliness (If sober) 5. Margaritas/Food Hopefully that clears it up a bit. This is in Dyer. It's not exactly going up against any big competition. That being said they made me happy in every single category. The margaritas were amazing! I had a grapefruit and I believe lime? That part of the night got fuzzy. The server was so sweet. He gave me great descriptions of everything I asked about. The chicken fajitas were to die for. Quite possibly the best chicken I have ever been served in a Mexican restaurant. I stayed away from anything terribly unhealthy this particular evening. The salsa was good. The guacamole I saw other tables with looked really good. I'm in the area a lot now and am actually really excited to go back! I wouldn't drive completely out of my way for this place, but if you are in Dyer its definitely a great choice!

We have been on a hunt for good Mexican food since we moved into the area a few months ago. Until now, every visit has been a colossal disaster. The Mexican food here just doesn't stack up against southern California. But Ruben's is the closest we've gotten. Good service. Well seasoned food. Recognizable menu. We'll definitely be back.

No questions. This place is awesome. Been there over 10 times tried 4-5 different entrees and yumminess every time!!! My favorite is the shrimp tacos but you really can't go wrong here

Go now! I had the steak torta and it was excellent! I liked the different salsa selections too. My margarita was filled to the rim and they did not skimp on the tequila. A great find while we were driving around.

If you like service that is quick and dependable, food to die for, and if you have a taste for margaritas this the place for you. Anytime I go the staff will go out of their way to make sure you have an enjoyable experience. Great place to dine in or order and pick up. The only Mexican Restaurant I go to anymore.

I don't know what's wrong with the people that have given reviews before me but this place is honestly the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Tastes like a white man cooked it and made it as american as possible. The salsa and salsa verde was good. so was the horchata. But that's about it.

We had been here for dinner...the restaurant is small and cramped...but that's a good thing...the kitchen is not just cranking out premade stuff but fresh yummy food. We did carry out last night and it was wonderful 8oz steak, great beans. The rice is just ok. Wonderful tortillas. Great guacamole! We also tried the empanadas (open face for lack of better terminology) - yum!!!! My husband added lettuce tomato and cheese to it and it reminded him of tacos growing up in Los Angeles. Definitely our new take out place.

Excellent Mexican food and prices! We had the Tacos Alambre and Tacos De Camaron and they were wonderful. The salsa and sauces were very flavorful. We splurged and had the Churros... talk about good ... sipping them in warm chocolate. YUM!!!! The staff was friendly and asking if we needed anything. You should beware that when they bring out fajitas the dinning area fills with smoke. It's a great smell and they look amazing. It will irritate your eyes a bit

We've been wanting to try this Mexican restaurant because we heard great reviews. Well, I have to say the food was very delicious. I had the carne asada fajitas and they were really yummy. My wife has the chicken bowl. She said it was really good. We also tried the homemade donuts for dessert and they were a big hit. The prices are very reasonable. The homemade tortillas are worth the try! Enjoy!

Wonderful menu selections without the high price and an attentive wait staff. I ordered their monthly margarita special, Tequila Sunrise. It had fresh squeezed OJ with fresh strawberries, Patron Citronage and tequila with a lime spear. Very refreshing! For lunch we each ordered from the lunch specials selections. I had the enchiladas with red sauce and steak with a side of refried beans. They included petite diced tomatoes, guac, lettuce, and sour cream. They were the perfect size. My husband the tostados with steak and a side of Mexican rice. He was smiling throughout his meal. Then we finished off with their homemade cinnamon n sugar donuts with a small amount of both strawberry and chocolate dipping sauce. Delicious! Highly recommend.

Average quality food and too high of prices. While the drink selection was very limited, it was decently priced. My wife and I came here because it was highly recommended by a family friend, but we honestly don't understand the raving 5-star reviews. We have been to 4 other Mexican restaurants in the Dyer/Munster/St. John/Highland area that have much better food with comparable or lower prices and superior service. We likely won't be returning to Ruben's Mexican Grill, so the fans of this place can have all their hearts desire.

Fantastic Mexican Food! Fantastic Service! Clean, Top Notch, Chicago quality Mexican restaurant in NW Indiana! If you are looking for a great Mexican restaurant in NW Indiana, look no farther! This was our 2nd visit here, with our 1st visit about a year ago. While the 1st visit was quite good, today's visit (5/8/15) was SUPERB! This is a family owned restaurant and so much better than any of the Mexican chains. Home cooked, delicious food that you won't find at the run of the mill chain restaurants. What else makes this restaurant superb? Fresh, authentic, high quality menu items, served in a clean, comfortable environment. We were seated quickly and were treated to freshly made chips (fresh and hot!) with homemade salsa (some of the best we have had). We then enjoyed the steak fajitas (fantastic, huge portion, served on a sizzling platter, nicely caramelized and seasoned just right). A big bonus: HOMEMADE, Corn tortillas. Fresh off the griddle and delicious! We also had enchiladas (steak) with tons of gooey melted cheese and a nice red sauce. The entrees were served with the usual guacamole, sour cream, lettuce and tomato. Nicely presented and great tasting! Feeling very satisfied, we were ready to call it quits, when our waiter suggested we try the homemade donuts sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. 10 donuts ($4). Raspberry and chocolate sauce drizzled on the plate and absolutely wonderful. Soft, hot and fresh. At the end of the meal, Ruben's wife stopped by the table and chatted with us. In speaking with her, it was obvious the they are dedicated to making this the finest Mexican restaurant in the area. I can unequivocally tell all of you Yelpers that they have succeeded in their quest to bring some of the best Mexican food to the area, along with great service, friendly staff and a great value. If you are looking for a fantastic Mexican meal, take the journey to Ruben's. You will find no better!

I am visiting with a friend who was born and raised here in Dyer. Upon her family discovering that I love Mexican food they shared with me the wonders of this location, although they have never been many of their friends have, and gave it sparkling reviews. We ordered the Queso Blanco for an appetizer. According to their menu this is a creamy three cheese blend on a bed of roasted peppers and onions served with tortilla chips. It was good, gooey and delicious but as it cooled it became a gummy mess. We both ordered the burrito suizo dinner. The burrito was covered in melted cheese and the sides were beans and rice. I had the carnitas which was very good. The meat was perfectly seasoned and they did not skimp on the serving. I found the rice and beans to lack flavor both were bland. I added salt in hopes of giving it life to no avail. My friend had ground beef. She was disappointed that they had no shredded beef. However, she says it was okay. The salsa was very good and so were the other sauces provided. In summary, this place is ok. For a Mexican restaurant in this area it is probably superb, however I am a west coast kid and I have had excellent Mexican food and this place does not compare. With that being said would I go again? Absolutely, life is about second chances...

Excellent flavors. Quality Ingredients. Our party of 6 left satisfied and enjoyed talking about the meal on the ride home. From the freshly made chips & salsa to the appetizers and entrees. All made for a pleasurable dining experience.

Great service, Fresh salsa, Excellent Margaritas and Homemade tortillas. I ordered the Carne Asada which was presented very nicely (I added a picture of it). Unfortunately, the steak was a bit tough as it had some areas of silver skin and gristle. It did have good flavor and was cooked perfectly (ordered medium rare), but it was just a bit too tough for me. A nearby table ordered the chicken fajitas, and it was some of the juiciest chicken I'd ever seen. It looked stupendous, and smelled even better. I'll be back, but prob wouldn't order the carne asada again.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
