Lovely little diner. Cute atmosphere and friendly staff. My friends and I were on a road trip from Chicago to Detroit and were looking for good place to stop for a bite to eat. We found Peggy Sue's and were very impressed. The biscuits are scrumptious!

Went there for breakfast and was exactly as I expected. Typical diner food....good and reasonably priced. My husband sunny side up was perfect. Would rather eat at local mom and pop places than national chains. Waitress was witty at 6am while I was still not quite awake after Black Friday shopping at Bass Pro Shop.

Friend from work recommended place. I ordered the fries, coleslaw and turkey club and it tasted very good. It has an old diner feel. Quick service.

I had intended to take my father and fiancé elsewhere, but our original destination was not open on Sundays. We stopped into Peggy Sue's Diner because I figured the food would be cheap and tasty. I was right about the cheap part. The décor is great. My dining companion dudes got a kick out of the classic cars theme. I wish the food would have been as impressive. Sadly, my biscuits and gravy were gross. The biscuits were hard and the gravy was flavorless. I take that back. The sauce was flavored, or spiced, with a ton of pepper. The skillets are equally bland. Our waitress never returned. They have it posted that it's more of a relaxed type vibe where you should feel free to get up and get things for yourself, so we did that for the butter I'd asked for and never received. But no one ever came back around again and we had to ask for our bill, too. No one stopped to top off waters. No one asked if our meal was satisfactory. No one asked if we wanted anything else, and I was considering giving dessert a go. No way will I return.

This is your prototypical middle American diner. The food was incredible, the waitress was on the spot and cute to boot. The price was unbeatable! My wife had the chicken fried steak and it was the best of our choices. I had the country skillet which was great too. I recommend the Texas toast as your bread option. All in all this is a great place to grab a bite for breakfast.

Great diner to stop at when traveling from Chicago to Michigan. Friendly and prompt service, tasty and reasonably priced food, and cute decor. Overall, I enjoyed my brunch at Peggy Sues.

Stopped in on the way across the state via 90/94. Good service was provided. The restaurant typified small town quaint atmosphere in the middle of the old center-of-town location. I had a breakfast, which is served all day. The sausage and multigrain pancakes were very tasty. The American home fries were definitely above average. My husband liked his BLT club sandwich. Needing improvement was the coffee (really poor), less than clean rug, and older plastic water glasses. Overall a good meal!

Stopped by Peggy Sue's on our way to Michigan to check out wedding venues. Boy Yelp! certainly steered us in the right direction. Parking was easy, but we walked in and the place was packed! Sure it was a Saturday - but it felt like a cozy little diner that you'd find tucked away in the big city. We waited less than 5-10 minutes for our table and we were greeted by the friendliest service I can remember in quite some time. The waitress suggested the biscuits & gravy....but I went for a skillet and I wish someplace in the city had one nearly as good. My fiancé had the biscuits & gravy - let's just say he can't wait till I plan the next trip to Michigan to look at wedding venues. Quick recap: Coffee was great - strong and fresh Bacon was crispy - not overcooked, just the way I like it Hash browns - my personal favorite! YUM! Might drive back to Chesterton just for these hash browns Price - can't be beat! All in all - if you're in the area Peggy Sue's is a MUST. One of the friendly patrons nearby mentioned they recently remodeled and I found the diner to have perfect charm, service, and food.

Ya know the movie Groundhog Day? The small town that they're in? Yupp, that's where I thought I was when we drove through after a crazy night of outlet shopping. This main street in Chesterton is sooo cute. There's even a gazebo in the middle of the park, decorated with Christmas bows already! Super precious. Anyway, this diner is perfect. The breakfast menu is extensive and CHEAP. Biscuits and gravy were only 2.75 and one egg was 75 cents. You'll NEVER see that anywhere in the Chi. The coffee was also one of the best cups I've ever had. Attribute it to my lack of sleep, but it was delicious. My friends also broke down and got some hot chocolate...I think the heaping mound of whipped cream was really what won them over. I also enjoyed all the different state license plates on the walls. My most favorite one, though, was one from Illinois that said, "Men Lie." Ahhh, truth. Great pit stop on the way home!

Another one off the beaten path (well at least for a Chicagoan like me). I go to Peggy Sue's Diner when driving to my girlfriend's cottage in Michigan and everything about it makes it the perfect midway stop. Our first stop was on one such trip and we were blown away by our luck. It's a classic diner, nothing else, but they do things right. I had the biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak and my girlfriend ordered an omelet and everything was superb. Nothing fancy, just done right. Even the coffee was great, and drinking crappy coffee is basically something I consider a sunk cost whenever eating at a diner I've never heard of. Perhaps I'm giving Peggy Sue's Diner credit for the general attitude of Chesterton's residents, but either way the courtesy we received was a bit startling. I don't exactly seek out conversations with strangers, but we had three very enjoyable ones in that first visit, and this doesn't even include our interactions with the waitress and Peggy Sue herself who came out to our table for a quick chat. The diner just received a makeover, and though I'll miss the small-town folksy charm, the renovations it received make the place look amazing. But, honestly, I'd go back even if the food was served in a lean-to if I got the same food and atmosphere.

Stopped here on our road trip. It was very convenient off the highway and was easy to get to. Apparently you just sit at a table and dont wait to get seated. A sign would have been nice. My friend and I stood there looking stupid for about 10 minutes with the waitresses walking by us until a patron told us just to sit. I had eggs, toast, bacon, and French toast. Everything was cheap (except for the chocolate milk which was $2.50). The French toast was exceptionally good. The eggs were pretty bland, I've had better. Service was typical in a diner like this: decent, they try to be nice but clearly have a million things to do so you don't get a ton of attention. I would eat here again, but it's just average.. Nothing to write home about.

horrible service! what a shame, too. the atmosphere is so cute, too bad our waitress was more of a nuisance than anything else. the hostess did more for us than our waitress did. so sad. the worst I have ever experienced in Indiana. these two stars are for our real waitress, an eighteen-year-old girl just starting college. my father and I agreed she could run the store all by herself and do WAY better than what we experienced. extremely disappointing though. one of the only places I could get breakfast around here.

My brothers and i stopped in here last Saturday morning before heading to Notre Dame for a basketball game. We were looking for a spot that was halfway from Chicago to South Bend and this place fit the bill. This place reminded me of the diners our grandfather would bring us to as kids. The service was speedy and the waitress was very nice. The food was EXCEPTIONAL! My brother loved the eggs Benedict. For me it is often hard for a restaurant to get my order right (corned beef hash and hash browns "burnt" - or as crispy as they can get it.....this short order chef nailed it! I will be going back again real soon!

I agree with a previous reviewer - R.R. Peggy Sue's is horrible. I gave it another try a few months ago. It was unbearably smoke-filled and filthy. I tried it when they first opened over ten years ago and again a few months ago. I will not give it another chance unless they gut the place and make it non-smoking. The food was edible but not good. It's a shame because I want to support locally owned businesses.

What is the definition of a diner? For me, a diner should have good, cheap food; be unpretentious and casual; a menu that includes a variety of basic, down-home and (in this case) Midwestern items; and maybe, just maybe, have waitresses with big bleached hair that call patrons "honey" or "sugar." At Peggy Sue's Diner, you'll get three out of four. At least, I did. I last ate at Peggy Sue's a couple years ago and liked it. Today, The Ancient One and I stopped by for lunch. Peggy Sue's, as befits a diner, is open only for breakfast and lunch. It is located just off the square in Chesterton, with plenty of free parking all around. The booths along the south wall have signs that say "non smoking." I admit I do not know - can you still smoke at restaurants in Indiana? Apparently the answer is yes, although I did not see anyone light up. We moved to the non-smoking side. The menu is strictly breakfast items (eggs, omelets, pancakes, skillet meals) and lunch (sandwiches, soup, and a couple specials). Although we came in at lunchtime, and I was jonesing for a BLT or egg salad, I ordered the Chesteron Omelet. This was a 3-egg omelette with cheese, peppers, onions, and sausage. I substituted bacon for the sausage. it comes with hash browns and toast, but I skipped the toast. The Ancient One chose two eggs sunny side up with corned beef hash. Now I will admit that hash is not something that has ever tickled my fancy. However, The Ancient One really loves it, so when I saw it on the menu, I knew that she would get it. We got coffee as soon as we sat down. It was good basic coffee. If you are so urbanized that you must have organic or fair trade, my friends, you must go to Red Cup down the block. This is a diner, and an Indiana diner on top of that. In most parts of Indiana, fair trade means that both parties signed off on the deal without firearms being involved. We really enjoyed our food. There was barely a crumb left behind. The total bill for two breakfast entrees and two coffees was $16.21. I consider that a good deal - and no, firearms were not involved. The diner is decorated with a lot of automobile memorabilia. There are many pictures and illustrations of classic cars. There are also a lot of old license plates from all over the country, most of them vanity plates. Most of the plates are amusing. All in all, a good deal for breakfast or lunch. Not brunch, friends - this is a small town in Indiana. Brunch is for yuppies, snobs, and transplanted Chicagoans. I will definitely visit this place again. Who knows - next time I may order both the BLT and the egg salad, eat half of each, and take the other halves home. Writing about this is making me hungry all over again. Sadly, it is late evening, and I am sitting in a Chicago apartment, dreaming of NW Indiana. Chesterton is okay, and Peggy Sue's is better. Go, eat there, and don't be a pain in the ass. No one cares that you're from Chicago.

This place serves coffee so strong it will get up, walk down the counter and bring you an orange juice chaser. The waitresses are sweeter than honey, but tinged with just a smidgen of sass. That short order kid must have eight arms, because my eggs (over easy) were sitting in front of me perfectly cooked before I finished asking for them. The biscuits are insane. Completely. Certifiably. Coo-coo for coco puffs crazy. and the toast is pretty good too.

Pretty good breakfast spot. If you want to be in and out and are on a run, but need to fill up for the morning, this is your place. The license plate wall is also an interesting touch!

This is an excellent and conveniently located breakfast restaurant on the way to dropping the kid off at school. It is just a mere hop-skip-jump off 94 and sort of a cultural adventure, It is a greasy spoon breakfast joint so if you give it one star because it isn't some high-end fancy place then you are not being fair. The breakfast is right on target and I would give it one star more than the North-side Diner on this merit.

First of all, I went to Peggy Sue's because Northside is closed for a few weeks. I'd been here a few times before and always preferred Northside, as most people do. You go to Peggy Sue's when Northside is closed or there aren't any tables. It's usually not too terrible. Well, today was a different story. My boyfriend and I went around 7am. There were a few seniors there, I'm assuming usuals. We got our menus pretty quickly, but that was probably the quickest part of the whole experience. We had to wait a while for our food and it was mediocre at best. My "well done" hash browns were bland and only well done on the tiniest top layer. The pancakes are a little small for the price, and 50 cents for chocolate chips... in each pancake? I don't know, that just seems stupid to me. The real problem was the service. Our waitress was very short with us and not friendly at all. I don't think she smiled while at our table a single time. However, she was friendly and talkative to the seniors. My boyfriend is heavily tattooed and we could both tell she was treating us differently because of that, our age (19 & 22), and that we aren't regulars. I will never be a regular there. Northside til I die.

First off ..the place is dirty which I have no problem with if the food is good. However, this is the most half-assed restaurant I have ever been to. It's like they want to own a restaurant but do as little work as possible . Almost everything is pre made from the store and you can tell...they do as little as possible to make the food taste good or make it even look decent. On top of it all they are over priced for what you get. If you are going to serve half-assed food at least make the prices reflect that. The one positive is the waitresses are nice.

Great food and the remodel work was decent. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a chill place that a lot of locals enjoy as part of the weekly routine. Kids are okay there and you get quite a bit of good food for the cost. Would recommend for sure.

I really don't understand these stellar reviews. The atmosphere is dirty and dingy and the food was typical diner food. The biscuits and gravy weren't good st all. The biscuits were tough and tasted like canned biscuits and the gravy.... holy pepper. We also had french toast which was ok. It was still pretty soggy and the coffe was just awful. I guess if you like dingy diner food this place is for you but I won't be returning.

Very unique little restaurant. Very busy at 10:30 am on a Friday. I really liked their gravy & biscuits. Their bacon was delicious & perfectly cooked the way I like it. My husband had their blueberry pancakes, which he also liked. Definitely recommend this place.

Great country cooking, where the only two "vegetables" accompanying your MEAT are both STARCHES (potatoes, bread). Man, is THIS a long way to get breakfast. Well SURE it is, if you're going on the Apple-Palooza tour! Our group starts off here for a BIG hearty breakfast for those not of hardened arteries. This is right off of 94, exit 39, eastbound. Take the road into town and find the square and there you are. SPECIALTY - Country gravy - two words that send chills down cardiologists AND big guys spines alike. It starts with pork sausage meat, fried until cooked. Leaving the grease, you may add MORE grease to it (the liquid), and then add flour. Salt and pepper would be the only spices (although I think it could stand a bit of sage or a pinch of sugar or soy sauce for you foodies). This goes on top of: - Biscuits - Country fried steak - Every skillet dish - Toast - Unsheltered children and pets They make a vat of it in the back so BIG, due to its popularity, they might as well run a hose to get it out to the front. Over biscuits and eggs, oh MAN. This is a once a year treat for us city folk, and a staple for those who have to carry the cows home. Omelets are fresh, bacon crisp, sausage is pattied or linked. Skillets are also good, with two eggs and your choice of anything in them. Waffles, pancakes are light and fluffy. Everything is pretty gosh darn good, and you can't go wrong. You can, however, order TOO MUCH, so just PACE yourself. CAVEATS - Multigrain pancakes - Eh. Everything about the food and flavor is big, except the price. Come on down and enjoy a little piece of Indiana heaven. Say hi to Gayle who as worked there for 30 some years. Open 5AM to 3PM, 7 days a week.
