We have visited this restaurant twice, and it's good. In assessing strip mall Mexican that offers a wide array of dishes, La Hacienda is as good as it gets in my opinion. The food is cheap, decent quality, and the place is nice. You get a true family environment as well. On my most recent visit, I had a combination dinner with a beef taco, beef enchilada, rice and beans. The beans were great. The taco and enchilada were of fine quality. Definitely better than what I'd make at home, not mind blowing if you are looking for a gourmet Mexican food experience. The ground beef could stand to be seasoned a bit more. The salsa that comes out at the beginning is delicious. The service on our first visit was great; waiter was very attentive and frequently by our table. This past visit, service was lousy. Waiter asked what drinks we wanted, we said two diet pepsi's. Five minutes later, he returned to ask what drinks we wanted...okay, that's no big deal. After we ordered our food, though, we never saw him again. There was a table with 15 people, they took all his attention. We were done eating before getting a single drink re-fill, then had to wait awhile for the check. In all, a 3 star "A-OK" rating is sufficient for La Hacienda. For strip mall Mexican food, I'd say it's in the upper echelon, but if you want a gourmet meal at a trendier type restaurant, go somewhere else. I'll definitely be back.

I can't believe this place is right across the street and I never knew it existed. So yes! It needs a bit of signage. But let's talk about food.... Have no idea why anyone would give a bad review. This place is on point! Food is delicious and staff is nice and tentative. I've been there twice and I have to say it's my new favorite spot in the neighborhood. Yes... Salsa is a bit spicy... But isn't that what Mexican food is all about?! Anybody that would write a bad review probably expect Taco Bell flavors. This place is authentic and food is delicious. So if you are looking for a new spot for Mexican food definitely check it out! Nothing fancy... But if you have some cravings for real Mexican, give it a try. And can't beat $5 16oz margaritas. They definitely aren't light handed on tequila.... A+

Really not that great.. I ordered a chimichanga and everything came on top of the dish. There was hardly any cheese on it either. Very disappointed. The cheese dip was very creamy and almost tasted like ranch. Margaritas were also a disappointment. The tequila tasted cheap and the drinks tasted like they were from a mix. On the plus side the service was fast and friendly. Just not very good food.

Stopped in for lunch in a Sunday. This is the second location I've visited and the quality of food seems to be superior to the one on the southside. The food tastes pretty decent and I love the decor with the oh-so-colorful chairs and tables. Server was friendly and attentive. My only...confusion is why the tamale has (what I think was) BBQ pork in it? Then it's covered in enchilada sauce and some ground beef? I thought it was kind of odd and made for a very weird flavor combination. Overall, it was okay. I would probably go back.

Nothing amazing, but good quality Mexican food. I've come here a couple times with coworkers for lunch, and the service is quick and perfect for a lunch hour. I've tried the fajitas and one of the veggie lunch options (I don't remember which one, but it involved an enchilada and a burrito, I believe. Both were tasty. Prices are all great for lunch, as well, and the interior is brightly painted and cheers me up when I walk in. The benches are all painted colorfully, Mexican style. I have no huge complaints - it's just average enough that I probably wouldn't come here on my own without my coworkers.

La Hacienda is a classic Mexican restaurant that is bond to have something for everyone. I met some people here for lunch as the restaurant is close to where we all work and I was pleasantly happy with the experience. There is a colorful, vibrant atmosphere, and the service was good. They have a solid selection of lunch specials that are pretty much guaranteed to fill you up. I ordered a regular 16oz margarita because it was Friday, so why not? It was a great margarita--nothing too special, but a consistent, strong margarita. Like a classic Mexican restaurant, chips and salsa were provided as a complimentary appetizer and the salsa was very tasty. I ordered the lunch special that came with a hearty beef burrito, chicken tamale, and a big helping of rice. I loaded Cholula all over it and went to town. It was delicious! My comrades did another lunch menu deal, and the other did one of the daily rotating specials, which is a great deal in itself. If you're looking to try a new restaurant or lunch spot, La Hacienda is certainly worth a look!

Good Mexican food exists on the Northside of Indy. La Hacienda is a bit hard to find, but worth the hunt if you want a quick meal. Lots of familiar classics from burritos, enchiladas, salads, and fajitas. There's nothing overly special about the place. Friendly service, a large dining area with plenty of booths, and a large outdoor patio. Order and the food is out practically before you unroll your napkin. The lunch specials (Monday-Saturday) are the way to go. You can get a burrito, enchilada, and beans for $7.50. Plenty of chips, bowls of salsa, and margaritas await your arrival. Not my favorite place to grab south of the border classics, but not my least either.

Once again I've gotta say this place has an average of three stars because peeps don't know good food here. Sorry for the dig, just work on your palate Indy folk. I ordered the seafood burrito and it was exceptional. Perfectly cooked scallops, shrimp and grilled krab. The queso fresco sauce was creamy and thin, which didn't overpower the grilled veggies. The restaurant is filled with colorful Mexican wood carvings. Cleanliness is highly regarded by the employees, a star just for that. Friendly and polite service from Miguel, aka, good manners. Yeah, Ioved my experience

My husband and I stopped in for lunch yesterday. Frankly, it had been awhile since we'd been here because the last two visits hadn't been all that great. We were in the mood for Mexican, and Cancun in Carmel didn't open until Noon. So - La Hacienda won! They were on today. We were seated quickly, served and waited on quickly, and the special I got - tilapia tacos - were really tasty! The fish was grilled, not fried, and not too much salt, as can often be the case with these tacos. My only disappointment was that there were too many toppings (shredded lettuce and cheese to be precise) to taste the fish. I ended up scraping a lot of it off. Unfortunately, the pico de gallo was on top of the lettuce and cheese, so I had to put it back on to get the flavor combination I was looking for. But other than that minor inconveniece, all in all, a good visit. It is close to home, so we'll be back for sure.

Finally tried one of the "1/2 off any entree" coupons that La Hacienda sends by mail, but after ordering a $13.99 entree and presenting the coupon I was told that it could not be applied to my entree since another member of our group had ordered an entree of lesser value, and the coupon may only be used on the cheapest entree ordered by a group. Apparently the term "any entree" means "cheapest entree" to the owners of La Hacienda. The food was average at best, so it will be easy never to go back. The portions are large though, so if that's what you're looking for this may be your place.

OK, I'm not an expert on Mexican food. Is it authentic? I've no clue. Is it good? Yes, it is. Each and every time, the food has been good. I knocked a star off because the service is hit and miss. I've been in there and had absolutely stellar service, and I've been in there and it's just been "ok". The service is consistently inconsistent. You never know how the service will be! But the food, for me, makes up for the chance you take on the service. The salsa is wonderful, and the Acapulco Cheese Steak is stuff dreams are made of. Try it. You won't be sorry.

I live within walking distance of this place and I wish I had never discovered it... Because I'm hooked! Strong and relatively inexpensive margaritas, friendly staff, and the food was deliciouso! Coming from Arizona, I love me some authentic Mexican food and this is the place to get it. The atmosphere is a little different but they also have an outdoor patio. Ready to go back!

I am on a quest to find the best Mexican in Carmel IN. This is not it! The Margaritas where good and prices good, but the good ends there. Our food was so salty we couldn't eat it! We had Chili Pablano, this was stuffed with Queso , Fish taco the fish was ground up and too salty to eat! and Carne Asada, the marinade was good but over salted! and let me just say I love salt, but this was too much even me! Disappointing especially since it got rave reviews on Yelp! I do have to say service was good too! Bathrooms dirty!

Relatively authentic Mexican food. Huge selection and great prices. I'm not Mexican so how do I know it's relatively authentic? All of the staff and a lot of the patrons are Mexican. Go to Abuelo's up the street and see if you can find a single Mexican customer or a Mexican customer-facing employee. No? That's because Abuelo's is for gringos. It's to Mexican food what PF Chang's is to Chinese food and Domino's Pizza is to Italian food. A lot of the negative reviews from the gringos here are just indications of why many Mexican (and other ethnic) restaurants in Indianapolis go the bland gringo way - too many people around here simply don't like authentic ethnic foods. This preference for blandness also ties to the recent article in the Indy Star about how Indianapolis has the third most fast food restaurants per capita in the US and an article in Indianapolis Monthly a couple of years ago about how Indianapolis has the most chain restaurants per capita of any decent sized city in the US. Unfortunate.

I've been here a couple times with friends. Servers are very rude, it took me forever to get a fork, lol. The last time we went in there, i think they were cleaning a sewer pipe or something, the smell was bad. Food was alright, I do love the queso cheese dip, but you can get that anywhere and have friendly service.

The food is great and always a nice presentation. The ambiance is great and very comfortable. However, prices are really high for what you get compared to other same style Mexican places.

Good food very affordable. The chips and salsa are great, the salsa is always a bit spicy which makes it very good

Colorful decor not unlike many Mexican cafes! Seated promptly and warm chips and homemade salsa delivered soon after. Salsa good taste with fresh cilantro, mild also. I added hot sauce for my taste. Ordered Texas Fajitas with chicken, beef, and shrimp. As per usual Mexican style the portion was large. The food was tasty and hot. Shrimp little rubbery but okay its not a seafood joint! Service also per usual not overpowering but adequate. Prices cheap, and they accept all forms of payment which is nice! I'd return here for more!

I'm Californian. I know my Mexican food. And the Carmel location of LaHa sucks. The service is slow as hell, the food is bland, and there is no creativity to any of the dishes. There has GOT to be a better choice for Mexican somewhere in Carmel, right? (Seriously, PM me if you know if one. No joke.)

GROSS!!! My kids wouldnt even eat it! I ordered an enchilada and a chile relleno. They didnt even use real cheese! It was canned cheese sauce and everything had mealy ground beef in with it. It was awful! My little one wanted chicken nuggets off the kids menu and they were fried, processed chicken and looked nasty. She didnt want them! We waited over an HOUR to be served and the service was slower than molasses. I have no idea how this place stays in business. Prices arent cheap. They start at $8.29 and go up to $15. The only things that were ok were the sangria and the fries! Stay away from this place. Totally gross.

  • Alex N.

Yeah it's basically a hole-in-the-wall joint. Both the food and the service is fast. Call it a sit-down Taco Bell. The chicken in the enchilada was overcooked.. enough said. There are plenty of other better Mexican restaurants in the area. Even Abuelos, which I panned, but trust me the food is cooked better. 2 stars for the cheap prices, but no way I'd be back due to the poor quality.

Very good. I am crazy over Mexican food. I just moved up here from a city where I knew what Mexican places were good and bad, and which good place to go too for which meal I wanted. Food nerd? Yes. You caught me. We tried one place previously that was just horrid and bland. Of course, there are Chipotles and Moe's up here, but they don't really count. We happened into this place, and I had no expectations. Tho I was worried it'd be bland or funny spices or super fake. GOOD NEWS It was none of those bad things! It was actually quite delicious and we were glad to find a Mexican restaurant that is what it should be. He had a dinner combo of burrito, enchilada, rice & beans. I had the Big Quesadilla Hacienda--basically a fajita quesadilla. Very good. Very fresh, quick to come to the table, flavor was great. We willl definitely be back there!

Disappointing. Best thing about this place is the decor - it's very festive and fresh. The food? Slop on a plate. The kind of food that arrives moments after you order it. They don't bother with the usual little pile of lettuce and tomatoes that normally comes on the side. Same sauce, same cheese served in everything. Boring and tasteless. Housemade salsas are okay, not notable. There's a hurry-up-and-eat feel that I don't like - and they weren't busy. Won't be back.

Disgusting. Absolutely vile. I'm not even sure where to start with the nightmare that is La Hacienda. First, absolutely blasting meriachi outside at levels only appropriate for heavy metal. Inside could only be described as 1960's technicolor Mexican kitsch. I'm not sure how this place has the rating it does, I could tell you this place wouldn't last a week down south. There is really no competition for La Hacienda in Carmel, and I'm sure that's a big part of the problem. The food was, in a word, gross. I can promise you the enchilada sauce is Old El Paso from a can. The beef was not seasoned at all, not even with salt and pepper. The tortillas were packaged Old Mission. If the salsa IS homemade, which I sincerely doubt, they would've actually been better off with El Paso. Absolutely everything from this place was pre-packaged and frozen...and you can really tell. Their highly touted Chili Releno was inedible. The taste and texture was that of being reheated leftovers. What made us leave though, with only a few bites taken, was the state of the bathrooms. I've seen cleaner restrooms at a cock-fighting arena...in...Kolkata...the poor section, on New Years day during a soccer riot. It wreaked, the toilet was clogged and there was toilet paper everywhere. Any restaurant willing to let that happen where the customer can see, really makes you afraid of what we cannot see. (Also, how could employees wash their hands in a restroom like that?) We left immediately, and we will never be back. I just hope to God I'm not sick tomorrow. Upon bringing this to the manager's attention, we were told the health department passed them. (They might need to re-check)

The shredded chicken burrito is very good. The salsa is spicy with tons of flavor! Service was great. I'm not looking for creativity in my Mexican food lunch. I want a taco, burrito, beans, rice, chips and salsa...not an edible expression of the chef's soul. Matter of fact I don't want eat Mexican where they call their "cooks"..."chefs"

Just randomly landed up at the place and decided to read a few review before we order...Andra's review had me dissecting my chicken enchilada before I took a bite.. Never mind my obsessive nature...the way it goes is...the food was pretty good..had the Golden Enchiladas and a frozen margarita which was to pretty good, my companion didn't have the same luck.. In short, cheap, quick and quite yummy... I don't mind coming back when I'm broke and don't feel like cooking!

Service is not the best. Food is ok. The decor is very nice as others have said. We had a complaint about the food and the server and the manager didnt really care. Go to El-Rodeo on 106th street.

Best Mexican restaurant I've found in Carmel. Great margaritas and overall affordable.

The chille relleno consisted of a small green chile covered with a refried beans/hamburger melt. It was nasty. The cheese enchilada was good as were the chips. Still a low cost Mexican choice in the area. Drinks reasonable too.

I could sum up La Hacienda by saying that if you're looking for good Mexican fare and efficient service, then try this location. We visited for the first time because it is close to our house, but have returned several times since then because it is reliable. Like many of these small strip center Mexican places, La Hacienda is "no frills" on the inside. However, the dishes here are good, arrive hot and the prices won't set you back too much. I was very impressed with the quick service, prices and food quality during a recent lunch outing. I tried the veggie quesadilla - I think they call it the "Garden Quesadilla" - and it was awesome! When we don't feel like driving farther up the road to El Jaripeo in Westfield, this is one of our second choices.

Ugh! Never again. Got chicken fajitas & a surprise! There was a metal screw in it! Didn't realize it until I took a big bite & about went thru the roof in pain. Complained & the manager didn't even bother to come to the table to check on me. Yes, I got my meal for free, but I only took 3 bites of it. They asked me if I wanted another dish, but I thought I got the screw in the last dish...somewhere there's a metal nut floating around. I like my hardware at Menards...not on my fajitas!

  • Warren C.

Pretty horrible all around. The best part of my experience here was the $4.99 margarita. Your choice of frozen or on the rocks. They give you a nice pour for 5 bucks, so no complaints there. Burrito del mar was an interesting take. There needs to be some sort of law against serving imitation crab in a burrito. No self-respecting Mexican I know would allow this atrocity to happen. Then on top, it's covered with this weird white queso sauce that tastes more processed than an imaginary Lunchables/Handi-Snacks hybrid cheese I might have eaten when I was a kid. The service was fair, but not great. Regardless of how far north we are, in a landlocked state, I'm certain there are better Mexican options to be found.

I love this place! Margaritas are amazing, staff is friendly, salsa is awesome and the food is awesome! Their chimichanga is awesome, and I Always take my friends here. Although ita not everyone's favorite, if you like flavor and delicious go here. It reminds me of el rodeo, but just a little more awesome! By far my favorite place in Carmel To eat . Try it if not for the food, the margaritas .

La Hacienda is a weekly destination for my family. The food is awesome, the service is exceptional and the portions are larger than most. The queso is a favorite...as are the margaritas and fajitas. The chicken soup is not something I would have typically tried, but now that I have, it's become a go to. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Carmel but this is by far the best! Enjoy!

I received some coupons in the mail for La Hacienda and decided to give it a try with my fiance the other night. Upon walking in I was pretty amazed at the colorful decor. Each table and booth and even chair unique in it's own way, gorgeous and very personal. We were seated immediately and served our drinks. For our appetizer we decided to share the Chori Queso. Queso blanco with chorizo sausage. I'll admit the cheese tasted a little processed, but I still enjoyed it. Their salsa they serve is pretty spicy, so heads up! Like many Mexican restaurants, their menu is huge. If I were to actually go through all of it and make a decision on what to order we'd have been there for an hour. I decided to get the Arroz con Pollo. Chicken, rice, and queso served with tortillas. It wasn't anything special, but not bad by any means. I'd like to go back and try their burritos, enchiladas, and chimichangas. The only part of our service I wasn't pleased with is the amount of time between bussing our table and us receiving our check. We probably sat and waited for our check for 10-15 minutes with nothing on our table and nobody checking in on us. All in all not a bad experience, I will definitely go back sometime and try some different entrees.

So being Mexican and growing up in Chicago, I know good Mexican food. I have been so disappointed in the food that passes for Mexican in Central Indiana. Might as well be taco bell... I can say, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this restaurant on a suggestion. I've been twice and plan to go again! The burro de roqueta is delicious. Tons of cheese if you like that sort of thing. Also like the 3.99 Taco Tuesdays but don't get the beef. The beef is super plain and tastes like something you can get at a school cafeteria only not as good. Chips and salsa are awesome. Overall, I am very happy to have found a place that is close to home as it gets.

This place is great! Good food and inexpensive! Their beef tacos are my favorite, delicious! Their salsa is also excellent and made fresh each day. They are a once a week stop for me!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
