This is an absolute must when you are in Bloomington. It is about the size of my coat closet. There is an older crowd that typically frequents this place and thus is very laid back. They used to offer free peanuts but now they charge some nominal fee

Used to love this place. Thanks, James for ruining that. You're always grouchy, rude and unprofessional. I hope the management realizes and takes notice of how you're negatively affecting business.

This IS where people meet, chat and know others. If the bartender does not know you just introduce yourself and next time they will recognize you! Closest to a small Euro bar. Cheers... Soon everyone will know your name!

I never preferred the "hip" bars in Bloomington during my eight years living there (well, aside from maybe Nick's...sorry). The Alley was my jam for two straight summers ('05, '06). It's away from all the hubbub of the Kirkwood strip and Walnut Street, yet right off the square and within walking distance of most downtown locations. I enjoyed the quiet, relaxed nature of this place, learning to play bar dice oh so many years ago, the decent selection of taps and bottles, and the regular clientele I got to know over two wonderful summers walking from work to Alley to home. The Alley is a small place, dark wood, few tables -- you can maybe fit 20-25 people (comfortably) inside, which is fine by me. I don't need a loud, crazy atmosphere to enjoy an adult beverage. I enjoyed the fact their lone TV (at the time anyway) allowed me to watch the NBA playoffs at a time when I didn't have cable or TV of my own! This is a hidden secret of Bloomington and I'm delighted to know it's still around. I'll definitely make a point to stop in on my next visit to B-Town.

Love this place. Not hundreds to choose from but you can get a Budweiser or PBR, unlike the place around the corner. Not a big place but very friendly. Large front window to people watch, and a outdoor seating area. Great place to get local tips on local activities.

Think the places where "everybody knows your name" have gone by the wayside? Time to start drinking local, my friends. Alley Bar (The Alley) is possibly the best bar in Bloomington! A warm, charming, and lively atmosphere greets folks walking in from West Kirkwood. If a tavern's aura could "feel local", the definition would likely be based on one's experience at the Alley. The bartenders are great, friendly, and you won't wait long for a beer, of which selections always consist of great local beers, plus the reliable Bud & Bud Light. If beer's not your thing (first of all, WTF), you may wish to DD it on Alley night -- it's not a full bar. But again, really...no beer? If you've never been, your first thought will likely be "this place is cool, where's the rest?" Yeah, that's it -- grab a table or seat before someone beats you to it :-) And, free peanuts (spicy or regular)!! They won't even glare at you if you want more...heaven forbid. As with everything in B-town, smoke-free! They don't really have a menu, but food is available and delivered from the Crazy Horse next door (like, officially...you don't have to look shady sneaking it in under your coat). Pretty quick too. So yeah, if Sports is your thing, that's cool. But, if you're adverse to waking up with the clap tomorrow, head down the street to the straightforward, no-frills pub to hang out with friends who are "always glad you came", Alley Bar.

Cheap, cheap! fun, hole in the wall small bar. I hear they are getting rid of their peanuts, so that stinks, but whatever they still have largeee beers for six bucks. Fun place to sit and chill at or to dance at. It is small but I like that and I like how its got a different feel than most of Bloomingtons bars. It often attracts a little bit of an older crowd than most of the bars in Bloomington (catering toward college students). So that can be nice.

What can you say about a trashy little bar in Bloomington? They have a decent selection of drafts and the prices aren't bad. My one complaint is the peanuts shells and lottery tickets on the floor.

This place is so cozy. Great beer selection, the owner is probably the best bartender in town, hands down. And not to mention DICE GAMES!!!

Only downside is that this bar only has beer and wine, but it is a nice little place, with good tunes, bartenders, peanuts and beers on tap. It has gotten a bit busier on weekends but I still enjoy it alot.

dark, narrow, hole in the wall, but perfect. friendly bartenders and patrons. it's a place your father would have had drinks. not huge, you walk in to some tables and a bar long the left side with decent number of stools. classic wood bar with a good rail and footrest. though you can't smoke inside any longer, there are still a few burns. a ledge on the wall opposite the bar. only in here late nights, a couple times on the weekend during fall semester. not packed or slammed with college kids, but a crowd that knows how to drink and ready to make friends (likely you'll get stuck in a conversation). dimly lit, mostly by neon. great location. always my last stop since the hilton garden is only a half block away through, well, the alley.

On a trip to visit some Hoosier friends of mine we stopped by The Alley. I wasn't expecting much as the place is pretty small and the first thing I notice when walking in are peanut shells all over the floor. However, The Alley does what all good bars should do and that is play good music, offer good beer and free peanuts, all at a cheap price. The music was mostly classic rock, which I know some may find annoying, but I didn't mind it. The beer selection is everything from major brands to a ton of micro breweries. Make sure to ask about the Yahtzee challenge and peanuts. Beware, the spicy ones are SPICY.
