Haven't been to sweet grass in about a year but we love the drunken chicken. Sad to see it no longer on the menu. No more complementary corn bread either. I am on with that as it was too sweet but a disappointment to my husband. Ordered the hog heaven - hand breaded pork cutlet sandwich with bacon l,t and mayo. My husband ordered the roasted chicken entree. Good came fast. Husbands pre dinner salad was good sized and fresh! Pork was lacking flavor but was ok. Hand cut fries are the standard restaurant fries the roasted chicken was by far pale in comparison to the drunken chicken - especially for the price. It may be another year before come back.

Absolutely LOVE the steak salad! Amazing ingredients, super fresh! A delightfully, tasty meal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I came in with some friends and everything we ordered was fantastic. We had the Cotija Cheese Fries as an app, it was excellent. (Loved the sauce as well) I ordered the Steak Salad and WOW. It was one of the best salads I've had in some time. The mixture of the bleu cheese, corn and perfectly cooked steak was incredible. It melted in your mouth. I also tried my friends risotto. Once again, totally killed it. I live in Indy and will definitely make the trip back down just to eat here. Everything on the menu sounded great and I look forward to trying more. 2 thumbs up!

One word - brunch! So good. They just started doing brunch this weekend and it is definitely one of my faves. Fried green tomato huevos rancheros?! Yes please. Served with creamy/cheesy grits - amazing. Suuuper filling and at least a day's worth of calories, but so worth it!

We had Joy as our front-of-house server, and she was attentive, prompt, and got things right. We never had to wait for her, and she didn't hover, either. For a decent restaurant, she was about as good as it gets. The food was tasty. Shrimp tacos were not overly stuffed, nor meagre. The flour tortillas are made fresh, and they are soft with just enough chew. Nice balance of flavor, and the shrimp was lightly breaded and not overcooked. The basil aioli is made from scratch on site daily--bonus points! The Cotija cheese fries were a tad too cool--still warm but not piping hot--just a slight demerit. The low country boil had a good balance of flavor and shrimp, mussels, and chorizo were perfectly cooked. It is so easy to overcook the seafood in a dish like this. Only downside was a bit of mussel shell fragment. Not a deal killer, but it could be unpleasant if it is a common occurrence. The focaccia didn't have any traces of herb that I could detect, and was more like a hamburger bun, with a light crumb and no chew. This was confusing, but as Joy had answered my many questions, and we were approaching satiation, I did not ask about it. Everything but the burger buns are made in-house, so I give high marks overall. Finally, all presentations were superb exemplars of good plating. Olga and I will be back soon.

I'm not sure what has happened at Sweet Grass. It used to be one of my favorite places to go. Last night we waited while we saw empty tables, and 2 large tables that weren't even cleared. We were able to get seats at the bar and were sad to see no local beers on draft. With so many local establishments supporting each other, it's sad to see Sweet Grass isn't one of them. I ordered the shrimp and grits, which I've had here before, and it was so terrible. Barely warm. The shrimp was tasteless. It was a treasure hunt to find the chorizo, as there was only 1 small morsel. Sweet Grass should take a lesson from Uptown Cafe's shrimp and grits-it's the best in town. They've lost my business. Nothing last night would make me want to return anytime soon.

Came on a Friday for lunch and had a really good experience. I had the steak salad, and it was delicious. My husband had a burger that was nothing fancy but it was enormous, and he loved it. I thought it was a tad pricy, but the service was great even though they were busy. Will definitely be going back!

All the food was bland. Not as much flavor as I wanted. but I do like the atmosphere of the place

I'll be honest- not what I was hoping for. Ordered the Drunken Chicken which was very dry at the thigh portion as was my dads. Also way to much Cummin. I did taste the Shrimp Po' Boy which was good and had good flavor as was the pork tenderloin sandwich. I was just pretty unimpressed with the chicken. My sides were ok, mashed taters were solid but the collard greens were pretty bland. Service was friendly and quick. Decent Beer selection I will try again and update rating if better.

Love, love, love Sweet Grass. This is the go-to date night restaurant for my husband and me. The food is terrific and they always have great been on tap. Plus, the waitstaff is attentive and friendly without being overbearing. I highly, highly recommend this little gem. Try the Shrimp Po Boy or the Pimento Mac-n-Cheese. You won't be disappointed!

I decided to check out Sweet Grass with my family after the IU Graduation. They seemed to have great reviews on Urbanspoon and I had seen them next to Angel B's plenty of times and they seemed to always be busy. When I got to Sweet Grass, there was a two hour wait which was fine and expected since it was graduation day. Although they were busy, that really isn't an excuse for not cleaning a table properly. There were still a few crumbs that I had to brush off the table. For some reason, entrees aren't sold until after 5pm which was a huge bummer. That basically leaves appetizers and burgers for us. We decided to get the Cotija fries for the appetizer, and they were so delicious! Definitely the highlight of the meal. For our entrees, we got a variety of burgers and the low country boil. The low country boil was pretty good. The burgers were all around lacking in our opinion... almost like they had no seasoning at all. Very bland and blah. Not bad prices but almost all the burgers I tasted were bland and not that great. I won't be going back and I wish I searched a little more online before choosing.

It's so nice to have this caliber of restaurant in Bloomington. Nice variety on menu. I'd compare it to The Farm only a little more consistent and less pricey. I've never been disappointed here. I usually get green salad with salmon filet and granny apple vinaigrette. The creme brûlée is the best I've ever had in my life and I used to live in France so that is saying something!

Sweetgrass has a wonderful opportunity to be one of the better restaurants in Bloomington. I do find that their food is pretty consistent and tasty and waiters and waitresses seem to care about their service. With that being said, Sweetgrass will never rise above its current status unless they employ a more available and conscientious general manager. I made numerous attempts to contact him but he is never on premises and had left many messages which he never once returned. After numerous attempts I was finally able to make contact with him where upon he agreed to host a party of 20 individuals. Upon arriving on that date none of the staff were aware of this party and nothing had been set up.While the staff did a marvelous job of trying to compensate for his mismanagement it still reflects poorly on his restaurant. I provided him an opportunity to shine and he blew out his own candle.

Came here on a date. It's decent. The selling point to get me there was their cornbread and bacon butter. I'm a sucker for all things healthy. We both got burgers and beers. Food was good. Nothing memorable ... but we had a corner table so that was nice. The space itself is ... interesting. Entrance is sort of a standard strip mall but then it's a dining room with a bar ... can't really explain it. Many of my classmates like this place ... I'd go back and try something else. I think I was a bit nervous my first time so I don't remember the food and need to head back to be reminded.

First off they will not allow reservations. With this in mind, we were planning a surprise party for a friend. Arriving 11/2 hr early to "reserve" our own table to find out "you cannot sit down until 50% of your guest are here"....which was over an hour away. So they left us standing there at the door. Finally we asked if we can go into the bar for a cocktail, we were reminded "you cannot sit down because your party is not here". So we all go into the bar (mind you we stood at the door for 30minutes while we could have been giving $$$ to the business (poor business planning), and we stand there for another near hour with 3 large tables just sitting empty. Finally 5 minutes before the arrival of the guest of honor arrived they sat us down at OUR request. 5 minutes into that with the bouquet of balloons we had placed on the table, another patron asked that we move them because they could not see the TV. I felt like I was in school. I have never had so many RULES in a place of business. Never will I give them my business. Besides their food is not all that anyways. We just went there because the guest of honor likes SG. Give it a year, they will be closed.

This used to be a 4-5 star Yelp'er in my opinion, but over the past year or so their standards have fallen off a cliff. It's super frustrating because this place is capable of excellence when they care. I've had the best and worst roast chicken of my life in this one restaurant in a period of 3 years. Long and short of it: Their are no standards in the kitchen anymore. Whether or not your food will be delicious or inedible is equivalent to rolling dice. There are no standards in the front of house anymore. You could have great service, or your water glass could be empty all night. The most annoying recent change is that when 8 o'clock rolls around, the entire serving staff's focus switches to getting everything closed up and getting out of their ASAP ... even though they close at 10.

  • Martha S.

We sure do love Sweet Grass. Before we were even seated our waitress (who has only served us once or maybe twice in the past year) said "well I haven't seen you two in a while!" As she brought our soup she leaned over and and said "Try dipping your cornbread in there you you will love it!!" Very full tonight yet we felt we were the only customers. Great food! I highly recommend Hoosier Daddy burger (veggie) and cotija fries!

  • SJ H.

The food here is consistently good and the atmosphere is calm. The lighting creates a more peaceful ambience. It is also a great place to dine outside as there seems to be less evening traffic. We enjoy coming here, particularly when we don't want to factor in a lot of extra time spent securing parking and waiting for a table. And yes, the cornbread is good.

I think this is a solid option for hanging out with friends - great for a drink, catching up, chatting, pretty good atmosphere. However, the wait can be long and the menu is pretty small - which is a problem since they tend to run out of the things that are best. I would say the service I've had here deserves a 4 at least. I've always had really friendly, helpful waitresses and bartenders. Definitely a plus. But, it doesn't make up for leaving hungry or unsatisfied... To me, the "drunken chicken" appears to be the best choice on the menu. However, both times I've visited the kitchen has run out (note: they make a limited amount, so go early if you want to try that one). On our first visit they were also out of their signature cornbread - last night they had it, and it flew off our table at the speed of light. Everyone loved that. In terms of the food I've had there, the pimento mac and cheese is actually pretty fantastic. The roasted chicken was pretty good - a smallish portion, but yummy. The veggie melt sandwich my friend ordered looked really good, too. And, I'd give the grilled catfish tacos and chunky vegetable/tomato soup a pretty solid rating as well. In terms of sides, the asparagus is very well done and the grit cake is comforting and tasty... and substantial! Mediocre at best - the cotija cheese fries, which basically tasted like normal fries with some sprinkled cheese on them. The nachos, meh. Not that great - the ribs, the green beans side (more like overcooked wilty brown beans). The beans (and the collard greens) are both cooked in butter and bacon, which takes away any health value... most of the sides are really unhealthy, unfortunately - it'd be nice to have at least a couple healthier options! I would actually come back here, I'll just moderate my expectations and keep shooting for that drunken chicken.

I've been to Sweetgrass numerous times before and have always loved it, but it seems like recently it's been going downhill. The wonderful johnnycake that used to be free upon seating is now a $5 appetizer. I used to go there pretty much JUST for the drunken chicken and risotto, but they don't offer either anymore. The service is also questionable at best. The most recent time I went, our waitress spilled and entire pitcher of ice water on the table and our laps. After cleaning up the mess, she proceeded to ignore our table for the rest of the meal. Super disappointing to see how much things have changed. Probably won't go back anytime soon.

  • Lily H.

This place is decent. Their cornbread and bacon butter is quite yummy... I'm a sucker for cornbread..especially ones that has lots of moisture to it. I pretty much cleared all of it myself.. I got the highly recommended Drunken Chicken. I think it's a bit over rated. It's okay... but meh...I've had better. Everyone else in my party liked their food. So I believe it's overall not bad. I would come back, but I would definitely try something else...

Sweet Grass Restaurant may be off the beaten path, but never misses a beat with their Midwest spin on Southern classics. From Po'Boys to Southern style grits, Sweet Grass has all the southern classics. Fried Green Tomatoes are a fan favorite, and are served with homemade buttermilk ranch. For those of you that are vegetarian, sub any 1/3 lb. burger for a vegetarian patty, no extra charge! If you're from the South, however, I'd advise you to not get your hopes up. As I said before, this restaurant puts a spin on Southern classics, so you may not get exactly what you expect. Sometimes, service can be slow, depending on the time of day. Be prepared to wait for your food during the dinner rush. Great beer selection, fun atmosphere, and very awesome space.

Food was cold and soggy and greasy. The fried green tomatoes were tough and lacked seasoning. The carrot cake had these weird shavings on the piece which made it hard to eat. It seemed that like the servers were not interested. Will not try again-I have been three times and it has always been a bummer.

The pork tenderloin and shrimp and grits were both incredible, as was the fried green tomato appetizer. We loved the food and the service. I only deduct one star because the ambiance of the place is a bit odd. It just doesn't feel like Sweet Grass really knows what it is or what it wants to be. Great place! They put some thought into menu with a low country Carolina theme on some items. Nice portions, the homemade potato chips are tasty! Great beer on draft not the same old same old stuff here! Lots of care went into the beer selections. I'll be back for draft 3$ pints Thursday! I highly reccomend coming here! They have tables a small bar and a casual seating area.

I went there for lunch on Saturday and got the cutter classic double with sauteed onions and goat cheese. The burger was HUGE and it tasted amazing. Also got the parm fries. The fries were skimpy on cheese and I think they should have the option of some type of aioli with the fries. All in all a very good lunch experience. And will come back.

Only come to Bloomington once a year for homecoming, but after finding Sweet Grass a few years ago, it's my can't wait to get back place. Filet, Filet, Filet is all I can say and finish with the Brule. Thanks guys, see ya' soon.

Wow! This place used to be much better. They've removed their pizzas from the menu, which is the only reason I came back after several months of not eating here. The service was less than stellar and the side Caesar salad I ordered was completely inedible. Luckily my sandwich was good or we would have had issues. It will be a long while before I set foot in Sweet Grass again.

I like Sweet Grass- but it's kind of limited and a bit expensive for some dishes. I do love their fried green tomatoes with their herb ranch. They also have a killer cornbread with bacon butter that is fantastic. We rarely go, because my husband hasn't found a dish he loves.

Stopped in recently on a Saturday for lunch. The service was efficient and friendly, which, let's face it, is nearly impossible to find in a Bloomington restaurant. I had the pork tenderloin sandwich. Very tasty, but very salty. My mom had the BLT, but without the fried green tomatoes and it looked good. It was too dark in the restaurant though, they need to turn up the dimmers.

  • Leigh H.

The service was fine. Nothing wrong there. The dinner salad was good. I was dumbfounded that the filet cost only $23 but after receiving it I could understand why...flavorless, boring, dull, drenched in sauce, covered with freeze dried scallions. My meat was cooked just fine. The other 2 filets at my table were over cooked. My asparagus was super greasy with either a very flavorless olive oil or some kind of vegetable oil. In my opinion, if all the junky sauces and greases were removed and a plain filet with steamed asparagus was served that would have been much better. However, my dogs were super happy with the to go box. So they win! This was my third try at Sweet Grass. I gave up on it over 2+ years ago. And nothing has really changed. The Uptown is far superior for about the same price with a much better location & atmosphere.

I've had two very different experiences at sweet grass. The first time I ate here, I was with three of my girl friends, and we all ordered sandwiches. I opted for the shrimp po boy with mashed potatoes subbed for the chips. When the waitress brought our food, I was very confused. Although it looked delicious, I had no idea how to actually begin to eat it. I never really was successful, and left a significant portion on my plate at the end of the night. What I did taste though was good, despite the sweet peppers bringing a bit too much spice for me. The next time I came, my parents treated me to dinner, so I of course ordered the most expensive item on the menu - crab cakes with a caesar salad and mashed potatoes. This time, everything was great. I wasn't able to finish it all, but I took home leftovers. Also to note, the cornbread and house butter are to die for. I wish these things were unlimited instead of one basket only. In summary, I'd steer clear of the sandwiches unless you're prepared to get messy, but über delicious food overall.

I have been hearing nothing but great things about Sweet Grass, so my dad and I decided to try it. I ordered the Drunken Chicken with BBQ sauce. "Mehh," is the right word to describe it. I am not a picky eater by any means, especially when the food is fried and drenched in BBQ sauce. However, it was luke warm and tasted somewhere between pure salt and and burnt toast. I do have to say the tomato soup was delicious and so was the corn bread, but it's hard to go wrong with those signature items. Maybe next time I will order the fried green tomato BLT.

I liked Sweet Grass a lot. It seems the negative reviews on this page are pretty petty, especially considering Bloomington is a small town and there aren't *that* many really good restaurants. We walked in at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, were seated right away and loved the ambiance. It was clean, uncluttered, not noisy and delightfully dark. My daughter had the tomato soup, which was amazing. I had the shrimp po boy, which at first was difficult to eat because it was so big but I consider that a good problem. My husband also liked his burger very much. One of the main reasons I give this restaurant five stars is the food is all-around fantastic, and you have the OPTION of how much you want to spend. You can get a gourmet sandwich meal for $9 or you can get an entree for $17--it's up to you. There seems to be a meal and a price range for everyone. Plus, for the type of place this is, the beer is cheap. I got a Corona for $3. (Where I live now, that's cheap,) I grew up in Bloomington and it's wonderful to see new places sprouting up like this. Very good food and friendly staff. I recommend and will return!

Any food tastes good when it is fried and served with a mayo sauce. Do NOT order the crab cakes !! They say they are lump meat but it is canned. I am a sucky cook and I could make better crab cakes!

Visited evening of 10/15/2012. Service good and attentive, except not offered dessert, coffee, tea or after dinner drinks. Staff began sweeping dining area floors before customers had finished meals. An unhealthy and disruptive practice. This is a rather schizophrenic restaurant, with some of Bloomington's finer food, but served with troubling defects. Servers are dressed in jeans, appropriate to a BBQ eatery, but not fitting with the better cuisine. There is an open kitchen, but the cooks don't wear hats or hairnets, and the black T-shirts would better be substituted by white chef's coats as a moderate respect for their clientele. Sweet Grass's signature corn bread is delightful, but should be served warm instead of cold from the kitchen. The facility has a rather minimalistic, cold stark decor and ambiance. With some softening elements to the interior architecture, less casual staff attire, and complete service including offering coffee, dessert, etc., this restaurant has potential to provide an overall fine experience.

The food here was better than I expected. I had the Beer Can Chicken, with the Blue Ridge BBQ glaze. My sides were the 'slaw and the fried okra, and they were rad. The chicken was very very moist, but wasn't extremely flavorful. I think that it could have spent some more time in the smoker. The atmosphere of this place is weird though... it's like someone mixed Jimmy Buffet's house with a frat house with a loft apartment or something. My waitress also had bigger feet than me, which was pretty cool. On Tuesdays, they have this deal where all their domestics (including 16oz PBR cans) are $2. That is a good deal. That is a deal that will keep me coming back.

We avoided this place for the first year we lived in Bloomington only because it looks like a sports bar when you drive by. On a whim we tried it for lunch on Valentine's Day. I should mention our expectations were low, but we were pleasantly surprised! The food was inexpensive and the portions are midwest HUGE. After eating the salad and appetizer (goat cheese fries) we had no room left for our sandwiches so we got to-go boxes. Service was friendly and prompt. And this place is not trying to be something it is not. Waaay better than that Feast joint! Pros: good service, tasty fare, good value. Cons: cavernous space and not open on Sundays :(

  • Jonny S.

I'd give this place 3 1/2 stars. I had the pimento cheese burger. Patty was nice and thick though it was a little undercooked (and they never asked how I liked it, so that's kind of a strike). The pimento cheese spread was tasty, though not at all how I expected it compared to how they do it down south. Menu seemed well crafted...familiar yet experimental at the same time. Place is a little loud given the layout, and also a little dark. Lots of good beers on tap which is a plus. And I always respect a chef who keeps his or her kitchen open so the public can see what's going on. Good, but nothing super special. Like I said 3 1/2, but I'll bump them up to 4 since most restaurants like this in B-town don't have parking.

Had a late lunch on a Saturday with family (ten people total). A few in the group had been here previously and said they had enjoyed everything they ordered before. Everyone was pleased with their meal; burger, dixie chicken sandwich, shrimp po boy, pork tenderloin sandwich, crab cake, fried green BLT. We shared the low country boil and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. I heard no complaints. I really liked the fried green tomatoes and my veggie melt was really good; the bread was top notch. The highlight of my meal was the freshly made potato chips. The service was also decent and friendly (much better than I am used to). The decor at first seems a bit tacky (fake palms and string lights), but somehow it works, in my opinion. If I lived in Bloomington I would be here frequently.

One of my favorite restaurants in B-town. They offer great sandwiches for around $9 and entrees from $15-20. I would highly recommend the shaved pork loin sandwich. They also have a great microbrew beer selection.

I really like this place and I'm glad they've succeeded in their location. I'd give them another star but I don't think they're quite ready. The cheap furniture needs to go in the dining area. Very good menu and a commitment to giving you fresh options. If they can't get what they want, they don't serve it. Fantastic drink specials during the week as well. Every side is very good, I'm especially fond of the fried okra. I'd pick this place over Malibu Grill every time.

Apparently my excitement about Sweet Grass was constructed from memory (the way I remember Chuck E. Cheese pizza, then Showbiz, being something special), because my second (and recent) experience was not-so-great in person. What went wrong? I don't know. Maybe I remembered the menu being different. There weren't a lot of non-meat options (the things you would hope to be not-so-meaty, like mac & cheese, were haphazardly sprinkled with meat. I get it, they're entrees and meat issues don't bode well with that type of cuisine anyway, but s a l a d s are boring) and the things that were fried -- there are a lot, from okra to the banana peppers on your sandwich -- seemed not very fresh. I started off with the fried green tomatoes, and what came out was some shameful shit. Southern-themed restaurants shouldn't disappoint on fried green tomatoes (and ranch? C'mon! I was really hoping for an aioli here...) Got the shrimp Po'boy. The slaw could have been awesome, but ended up being a distracting mouthful of cabbage. See earlier comment re: breaded peppers. Needed the ranch from the fried green tomatoes for the breaded okra. And for the record, I didn't get any cornbread. I forgot about it until we were on the way out and I saw someone else's and immediately wished I had had it. Here's what went well: my boyfriend's dinner. He did the create-your-own pizza with asparagus, goat cheese and prosciutto. I'm not sure who deserves the credit for how delicious that was, but I know what I'm getting the next time I'm there. And I will be back: it wasn't that bad, for God's sake. You know how I feel about restaurants south of 2nd Street (good -- I feel good about them and want them to stay). Gotta give a shout-out to the bookcases in the waiting area. I took much interest in the astrology book (beeteedubs, Virgos are super-critical. Take this review with a grain of salt.)

We really like this place and their southern style food, along with a quality - albeit small - selection of beers on tap. sandwiches are very good and plenty of food, and their pimento mac and cheese (with prosciutto) is decadent comfort food. It's in an odd spot, but that shouldn't stop you.

Sweet Grass has a great variety of really delicious dishes. Their selections are unique, affordable, and tasty. My husband and I frequent this place for dinner and my co-workers and I go there all the time for lunch. Servers are always nice and food is always great, no matter what I order.

I returned to Sweet Grass with a friend after being out of the country for a couple of months, so I wanted really good American style food. I ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT and my friend ordered one of the hamburgers. The fried green tomato BLT was incredible, the bacon was perfectly crispy and the flavor of the fried green tomatoes was superb. I stupidly ordered the risotto as my side, again, and once again I was unable to eat the risotto due to its overwhelming saltiness. My friend also agreed that it was inedible due to the amount of salt in the dish. I want so badly for the risotto to be good, but there is no way that I will ever attempt it again. Instead of the risotto our server brought over mashed potatoes, which were fine, but not outstanding.

Go for the cornbread and butter and a beer. It will be most memorable I promise :) Get tipsy in here and enjoy it because there's something about the atmosphere in sweetgrass that makes you feel like you aren't in bloomington and as awesome as bloomington is, sometimes it's nice to feel like you're in another place.

6 servers and about 20-23 tables...everything was slow. Our server seemed very irritated and flustered even though she only had two tables when we arrived. Part of the order was missing for about 10 minutes. The food was about 3.5 stars, but the service brought it down a lot. We really had high hopes for this restaurant--bummer.

The food is quite good but the service doesn't support some of the prices. To me, the place didn't have a whole lot of identity and I felt kind of rushed. I liked the food but IF I go back, I will be getting take out.

Ive been coming here since 2010, when Sweet Grass was just in its infancy. It has evolved, and survived the test of time. They now have a wide selection of liquors besides the great beer and wine selection. There is always something new and unique. Last thing I ate was the pulled bbq chicken sammich, and it was lip-smacking-good. Chef Luke recommended it to me personally.

My boyfriend and I have been to Sweet Grass twice now. After the first time, we said we wouldn't go back because we were so disappointed in the service, even though the food was great. But we went back a second time... because the food was great. First time I had the pimento mac and cheese, which was delicious (very rich, super hot). Second time I had the Shrimp Po Boy, which was really excellent. Crispy fried shrimp, delicious sauce, the bread wasn't soggy at all and it came with a heaping serving of fries. We shared a tomato soup to start and it was also fantastic. A word about the service though, it seems like there's no distinct host. Both times we had to flag someone down to seat us. And once we were initially greeted by our server (both times), it seems like they were taking the entire restaurant themselves and things ran very slowly from that point. It's a great place to go if you're not in a hurry at all. We'd be content to come and just eat at the bar, but they have very limited bar seating. All in all, great food, slow service, weird layout. But I think I'll have to eat my words and go back a third time.

Took friends here last Friday night before going to the theatre. Waiter was very friendly, recited the special who convinced us she had tasted it. Delicious clam chowder, full of meat and broth, not many potatoes. Crisp salads, mac and cheese entree appeared a little small in terms of size, but oh, so good and filling. Chicken salad would have been better on a toasted roll; veggie melt tasty and huge; ziti pasta heavy on the onions, but tangy and not too sweet. Great experience, really. Been coming here a long time and never disappointed.

Not a bad place. There are some things about Sweet Grass that are decent and some things that were disappointing. The good: Service was nice The restaurant is modern and unpretentious The food selection is pretty unique for Bloomington BBQ sauce was awesome The not so good: I got the drunken chicken, it was a shade over being undercooked, the dry rub had no flavor and the grit cakes were very tasty on the outside but the inside was bland. For $16, if this were to happen again, I would definitely not go back. There is potential and I'd go back for another try. However, If I were a pickier person, I'd be giving Sweet Grass a two star rating and avoiding.

Trying more local restaurants we decided to hit up Sweet Grass tonight. Our service was great, and the atmosphere is nice and casual. I liked the open feel of it. The menu options were all gourmet dishes. We both opted for the roast pork tenderloin. This was served on mashed potatoes with apple and bacon and a delicious sweet sauce. The only problem is that the pork was pink inside when we cut into it. We sent them both back and the new dishes were just slightly less pink. We went ahead enjoyed the portions that were fully cooked, and the recipe itself was excellent. Based on the taste of the recipe I would love to give 4 stars but undercooked pork is nothing to mess around with. Only other suggestion I would have for the owner is to offer more dessert items. You can get a soda float or a fried twinkie.. I would think that being next to Angel's galleria of cakes they could carry some more dessert options. In all, the flavor of our dish and sides along with the service outweigh the pork issue, so that won't keep us from going back. Definitely give it a shot!

Can we talk about unfriendly hostess and waitress? No attempt to welcome us. We felt like we were a bother just for showing up. My shrimp Po-boy sandwich had several pieces of calamari in it. As it happens, calamari was the special tonight. I asked if there was supposed to be calamari in the sandwich and was first told that they were fried banana peppers, then later after talking to the chef I was told the shrimp and calamari are dredged in the same batter. So pieces of calamari just lying around for who-knows how long clung to my too few shrimp and filled out the sandwich. Nice. These are forgivable things of course when service is at least decent, but when there's such obvious tension amongst the wait staff, it was nice to leave and know I don't have to return.

So far, Sweetgrass is the only place in town that when I order a burger a certain way, it is consistently what I asked for. Also, you can get a burger at plenty of restaurants but so far Sweetgrass is the only one worth the price I've found so far.

  • Katie W.

Simply utterly awesome. At first I thought it would be a bust since my husband and I are vegetarian, but we had a stellar dinner. They will substitute any burger with a veggie burger, but I didn't go that route. Fried green tomatoes, grit cake, and the vegetable sandwich--and the best cornbread you'll ever put in your mouth. Everything was intensely good--can't wait to go back!

  • Ramona B.

If you love salt, get the pimiento macaroni & cheese with the collard greens. Our server was great but the food was not worth the money. I would have rather had Upland's Mac & cheese. The cornbread was good, but you can re-create it at home with a box of Jiffy Cornbread mix. Don't bother to go during IU's graduation weekend or you will wait almost 40 minutes for your food (even if you arrive at the restaurant 10 minutes after they open). We talked to the manager about our wait. He arrived at our table with sweat dripping off his face. Bloomington has many great restaurants, but this is not one of them.

Love Sweet Grass! They have pretty good drink specials on weekdays, and I've never had a meal there I didn't love. So far I've eaten their pork tenderloin and their Hoosier Daddy Burger, they were both amazing. Sandwiches come with chips by default but you can sub a side for a little extra money. I usually get a side salad and they are HUGE!! My only complaint is that they should add more tables or move to a larger location so they can seat more people and feed them their delicious food on a busy night :)

Sweet Grass is a new southern restaurant that opened up July of 2009 on the south side of Bloomington. Their food is apparently a fusion of "Carolina and Hooiser cuisine". The interior of Sweet Grass is spacious and decorated with delicate string lights, dark wood and fake palm trees (which looks much better than it sounds) My partner looooves this place and usually orders the shrimp po'boy, or pimento burger. I like the BLT, which was smoked bacon, lettuce, fried green tomatoes and garlic mayo on focaccia bread. The BLT is unusual (on account of the fried green tomatoes) but was very tasty and filling. All the ingredients work well together and the lunch price is around $7.00. i really prefer Sweet Grass for lunch, the dinner prices are a bit much. The meal also came with a side of parm/garlic fries. The fries are awesome and similar to what Farm offers as a point of reference. Pay the extra buck or two and get them with your meal! The service was attentive and very welcoming. They also have a "library" in the lobby area...where you are free to take and leave books at will. We both had a nice dining experience and will probably return for lunch in the future.

Amazing food. Wednesday is half price wine bottles. The collard greens are the best I have ever had. Great service and good atmosphere.

I have found the service at Sweet Grass pretty consistently inattentive (with one exception). There never seem to be enough wait staff and they always seem completely frazzled. The food has also been uneven--sometimes great, other times undercooked or, in the case of salad, way overdressed. I hope they can get their act together because the place has potential.

    (2)
  • Anthony C.

Very good food. The pizza was excellent and they have a good number of different ingredients you can add. The beer menu is also good and very cheap. The cornbread is also some of the tastiest bread I've ever had! The only downside is the service is pretty bad, which is a shame because there aren't very many tables and a lot of open space. Also they make their dishes with too much cheese, but if you are into that this is the place to go! An extra 1/2 star for having shuffleboard (although the table is very small).

This place used to be a convenient store and short order line... and it still looks like that on the inside. The exposed rafters are tacky... but not as tacky as the fountain they have in the middle of the floor when you enter the restaurant... like WTF? where am i? in a garden? The atmosphere is not cozy and inviting. it's rigid and uncomfortable. There is an area with a flat screen TV, band equipment, sofa, and video gaming console? I felt like i was eating in someone's garage band practice. Is this an afternoon hangout for the owner or a restaurant? i don't know. The menu was unappetizing. I finally had to ask the waitress for a suggestion because NOTHING looked good. She said the fried green tomato sandwich was popular.so I order it. It wasn't terrible... but this place is just confusing. What kind of place is it? Where am I? I can't really figure it out and I'm not going to try to spend time figuring it out. I won't be returning.

After all the great things I'd heard about this place, I was expecting to be really impressed. NOT! After ordering dinner then listening to another server describe the specials, we realized they actually HAD specials--something our server never bothered to mention. I got the shrimp poboy with collard greens. The sandwich was OK. I ended up with about 4 bites with no shrimp--all slaw and bread. Tasted fine, but skimpy on the shrimp and obvious they were trying camouflage the fact. The collard greens were OK but too sweet--not worth an extra $1.95. My wife got the pimento burger with fries (also not worth the EXTRA $1.95). The burger was a tiny preformed patty--NOT cooked medium as requested (definitely nothing like the photo by Huy V.). The burger came with mayo--not advertized. The cheese was OK but seemed more like a melted processed cheese mix than fresh pimento cheese. The ambience was like a half-assed TGI Friday's. I don't get the open kitchen, where I can watch the miserable looking grill guy in a Nick's English Hut t-shirt ruin the food. If you want a good burger go to Upland. If you want interesting "southern" food, go to Farm. If you want average big-chain casual dining, go to TGI Friday's, Applebee's or Chili's. Maybe we missed it before it began to suck, but suck it does.

Can I first start off by saying "what is happening to you sweet grass!?" I've been to this spot numerous times, and it's slowly becoming more & more apparent it's on a down hill slope. Let's talk about this most recent visit... It's Monday @6:30. My husband and I get seated at a table right away... Wait about 10 min for our server to take drink order... We also order our food, since we had enough time to figure that out ... Food arrives... My husband got a pork sandwich of some sort, that was pretty amazing, I went with the Pimento Mac (my go to 4/5 times ) ... I could tell just by looking at the dish it was not going to be enjoyable... Over cooked. No gooey cheesy goodness, just sad dried up pasta... Ok ...so they over cooked the Mac and cheese, I know they're better than that ... They can fix this... Nope! I tried to get the waitress's attention for literally 15 min, she never stopped by once... * Mind you the food was dropped off by a food runner... We hadn't seen the waitress since she brought over our waters . By the time we finally waved her down, I told her the issue of how "it tasted as if they just microwaved left over pimento Mac "... she assured me they did not have a microwave, then offered to make a new one ... Yea, 15 min ago that would have been fine but now, NO. I asked to just take it off the bill and that was that . So disappointed The professionalism of the servers and cooks - that's what's bringing this rating down for me ... Sweet grass is better than what their employees are portraying ..

Sweet Grass will always hold a special place in my heart as it is where my love and I had our first date. Sentiment aside though, the food is delicious. I love their chicken breast entree with their red pepper sauce, although I wish they would give you more of it! Throw in some delicious sweet potato fries and asparagus and I'm all set. Great atmosphere, open airy feeling. Wonderful place to have lunch or dinner and catch up with a friend.

New ownership, same menu, although new owner will be adding Chinese menu soon. Seems they did a poor job of telling wait staff of the change and many left thinking they were out of jobs! Too bad! Shrimp Po Boy is a favorite as well as cotija fries.

I'll just start out by sharing that this place! Service has always been consistent and friendly. It's an atmosphere where it is cozy but very classy. Not only that the food is fantastic! Every time we come the food is so fresh and delicious. There is truly something for everyone there. I love it!

I agree with several of the other reviews. What is happening at sweet grass? Seated immediately which was awesome. Once seated it was 15 to 20 minutes before we were greeted and a drink order was taken! Once we had servers attention we ordered quickly. It took close to 35 to 40 minutes to receive our food and two did not receive their food. There was no acknowledgement. We had to chase down server. Another 20 minutes later they received their food they received their food. Of course everyone else was finished and waiting. Received bill with all entries plus a 20% tip included!!! They just lost any future business!!!

Went there with a buddy for the first time. No one came to our table in the 10 minutes we waited. Luckily it was enough time to realize everything is expensive ($13 for Mac and Cheese is a lot regardless of the amount of pimento cheese it has) and since no one cared that we were waiting, we left. I wish I could say I tried the food, but I'm not waiting more than 10 minutes to have someone take my drink order. If you're thinking about going here, call ahead. That might give them enough time to get ready to take a drink order.

I've been here twice and I can't figure out why people like it. I had a pork sandwich that was just okay with green beans that seemed as if they were just poured out of a can. Still, I hear people rave about it, but I won't be back. Nothing else on the menu appealed to me and the rest of the dining experience was just okay.

Spacious restaurant with the cool ambience of a Cheesecake Factory; you'll warm up and settle in quickly once you taste the food. We came early afternoon on a Saturday, seated without a wait. Highly recommended! This Carolina kitchen serves fried okra that is crisp and flavorful; grilled catfish on flour tortillas that melt in your mouth; salads with grilled chicken large enough to feed two hungry men; and a simply superb tomato bisque topped with corn and pepper chowder and freshly baked croutons. If you woke up to late for brunch, go here!

This is a nice place to sit outside, if it is not Rush Hour. There are cars going by so often, it is hard to hear the other members in your party. Occasionally it is even difficult to breathe with traffic backed up, and car fumes so close. The food is alright. It is not the most expensive, but it is not the best value for the money either. Inside seating is darker, and a quieter area. Decor is simple, and inviting.

May have found my favorite new hangout! As a Tarheal myself from Kinston NC I was immediate drawn to the pimento burger....I was salivating and hopping in my chair waiting for the damn thing... Space: Great ambient lighting, collegiate cozy feel with adults and few kids. When the sacred burger arrived I dived in: bacon, burger, bun and especially the house made pimento spread were on point and off the hook good...like real good, good. You know your a foodaholic if you tear up when u get that perfect harmonious meal in your discerning pie hole. Bartender was awesome. Host and manager super cool. Ran over and loved on the kitchen team: "thanks for bringing back home for the night". All's well in the cosmos.

Given this place a good amount of my business, because at first I liked it...food quality is just getting worse and worse. I don't go there expecting fine dining... But still, I probably won't be back after my last few trips. It's clear when you get your plate the kitchen doesn't really care. Service was ok, a little slow but friendly enough. At the very least don't order the half roast drunken chicken or chicken breast...you'll be disappointed.

Sweetgrass is a pleasant restaurant in which you will be served a good meal at a reasonably moderate price. If this is all you want to know, stop reading. Sweetgrass has come a long way since I went there several times years ago. But they may be having an identity crisis. They have done a great deal with the huge space. It was originally bare and awkward. It is no longer bare. My take is that Sweetgrass is aspiring to be a good restaurant, but to bring in diners they must make an effort to be a good drinking place. Dreams meet reality in the best lives and you work out your place as best you can. (Full disclosure statement: Having to see a television, or three, pretty much ruins a good meal for me in a restaurant or a home. I am actively trying to get past that in this review.) Noise level was moderate and pleasant. My concerns were more the visual noise. Some of this results from the uncertainty about how to use this space. We were not delighted to watch the dirty dishes being scraped and racked. Similarly, being able to see into a kitchen and witness food preparation can be a delight or a liability depending on the kitchen. You may make your own decision here. I think it is all just not quite working and the money spent on televisions should have gone to someone who could better advise on the use of space. I was pleased to see staff work together to bring out food hot and fresh or get drinks to the tables in a timely way. Good going. What was more disconcerting was the disparity between our well turned out waitress and the server who was dressed to sling barbeque at a picnic, in ringer T shirt and hoody. I was thinking, "Really?" Am I being a snob or is it a reasonable question if I am paying for upscale and getting corner diner décor and dress? Food and drink choices were wide and varied. There is real effort to have superb choices and care has been taken with the range of beverages. There is a good bar manager working here somewhere. I tried several dishes to get a good sampling of the flavors and was pleased with the food. I had sweet potato waffle fries and they were perfect. I tried the Cotija Cheese Fries and they were a delight. This treat alone showed there was someone with taste in the kitchen. Instead of "slam 'em with salt or garlic and we'll win," which is often the mark of seasoned fries, these were a subtle and balanced blend of classic carb and modern taste. I also enjoyed the shrimp tacos. They are worth a return voyage any day. At three on a plate this would have been plenty for my entire meal. My companion had a steak salad and thoroughly enjoyed it. The grilled fillet was neither overmuch nor overdone and the rest of the salad was a rich and varied blend including corn, artichokes and the most perfectly blanched asparagus I have ever been served. We could have walked away happy from this food. However, it is hard to pass the opportunity to gauge a kitchen on its Crème brûlée, so we gave in. No regrets there. An extremely smooth and even custard unpolluted with extra flavorings was topped with an amazingly light caramel, thin as an eggshell, inviting us into delight. I recommend Sweetgrass. I just wish I could try a table looking out the windows with no reflections. That would help me more fully enjoy the superb aspects of this confused restaurant.

A great change of pace from typical overcrowded downtown restaurants. ...Sweet Grass is a little off the beaten path, but its large open seating area, sports themed bar area and friendly service make it well worth the trip. A varied menu features everything from delicious salads to burgers, main entrees and more. Wide selection of beer and wine plus fun cocktails. Southern themed cuisine even includes fried green tomatoes. The steak salad was outstanding!

Sweet Grass? Should be called Wheat Grass because the service will leave a bad taste in your mouth. I work for a company that is a major vendor to IU. I also am a graduate student at the Kelley School of Business. I was in Bloomington today to meet clients and they were very excited to take me to your establishment. I was very impressed with the layout and the food selection is amazing. However, our server who was also working the bar (Therese) was extremely indifferent and unaccommodating. She took an extended amount of time to finally take our order and was very off-putting. We all ordered the soup of the day and lunch. Our lunches were delivered to the table by a different server and we asked about our soup. She snidely commented "you did not get soup because we are out"; keep in mind this was for a 12 o'clock lunch. She then asked us if we wanted any other soup instead and we all said no. About five minutes later our original server brought us one cup of potato soup. What is interesting to me is most places almost annoyingly always ask if one wants dessert. Keep in mind this place is so about their desserts that it is written on a board in the entrance. However, the original waitress did a drive by dropping of the bill. We had to flag her down and mentioned we would like dessert and asked what they had. She said "we have a slice of peach pie, crème brûlée, and some PB and chocolate specialty. My client (who is in his 70's and a prominent IU professor) asked to have the peach pie. From there I watched the server go to the bar, wait on a few people, walk around, then finally go to the back to place the order. A few minutes later she came back and said "the last piece has been taken"; no apologies, complete and utter indifference to a thing called customer service and quite obviously did not care about the customer experience and how that can make or break a restaurant. It is tragic to see such an inviting place on the surface to be such a dud. I hope your other employees take more pride in their work and realize how much they impact your brand.

We came in on a Friday night with another couple for a nice dinner. Sweet Grass was a nice casual spot, off the beaten path in Bloomington, but a nice meal nonetheless. For starters, they brought a basket of cornbread with the house "bacon butter." Now I have heard that bacon makes everything better, but I'll admit to being a bit skeptical about that. In this case, the chef was right. The "bacon butter" was really good... and the cornbread could have stood on its own if it needed to. A nice start. I had the special for the evening. It was a broiled cod filet with pork and beans plus two sides. I again wondered about the wisdom of cod with pork and beans, but again, the chef was right. A unique pairing and very nice. I also had asparagus and collard greens for my sides. Both tasty, and the greens has a bit of a hot-sauce kick, which was a nice touch. As for service, the server was attentive and wanted to ensure that we had a good experience. She bent over backwards to help one of the others at our table whose steak wasn't right. My friend orders her Filet butterflied and well done (which I am pretty sure is a crime...) and the steak came out someplace between medium and medium well. I personally think it was because the cook couldn't bring himself/herself to destroy such a fine piece of meat. However, my personal feelings aside, the server insisted on letting the kitchen try again, and while my friend didn't want to impose or make a big scene about it, the server insisted and took care of the problem. (And I had a moment of silence for that steak). Overall we had a good night, a good meal and an enjoyable time. I saw several things on the menu that I would like to try, so we will do it again sometime. Couple of notes: 1. Does not do reservations. You might have a wait on the weekend. 2. Has a private lot, but on the weekend, the crowd was bigger than the lot, so we parked on an adjacent street.

Love this place!! I have a toddler and our waitress was so accommodating! Crab cakes and risotto are my favorite and we always get the fried green tomatoes. This place is great! Although they don't take reservations we've never had to wait more than 5 min for a table

Went for brunch today, it was outstanding!! The Fried green tomato rancheros was awesome and with the home fries, was enough to share. They have a nice selection of "adult" beverages for brunch, more than the usual Bloody Mary and Mimosa. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so we can enjoy the outside seating.

My #1 Dining Partner and I first started calling this restaurant Sweet Ass (logically), and over time we have come to affectionately refer to it as Sweet Butt. Sweet Butt is as unequivocally delicious as anything deep-fried, bacon-garnished, ranch-drizzled, and pimento-cheese-smothered is, which is to say, very. Although they recently raised their prices their burgers are by far the tastiest and best deal in town. When baconed/pimentoed/ranched like my favorite one, hangover magic. I've had delicious salads, soups, tacos... the one mediocre meal I had here was a sad, dry little chicken breast at dinner, but I should have known not even Sweet Butt can make a skinless breast delicious. We once got a 12 oz filet here for $25 bucks that was the best steak I've had in town. The atmosphere is pretty bizarre -- a big, stark open space that they have tried to make cozier with some questionable touches like an awkwardly placed fountain? I don't know what's going on there, but I've grown not to mind it, at least it's on the quirky side. Service is generally very good. Oh, and they often have decent drink specials! You should go here if you haven't been -- it's not pretentious and it won't ~bLoW yOuR mInD~ or anything, but it's very consistent and very good.

The one star is food, which is delicious. I had been to Sweet Grass several times before, during slower hours, and enjoyed a delicious meal, albeit very slowly due to the terrible service. Seriously wait staff, get it together. Until tonight, I would say the food outweighed the terrible service, but no more. We went to Sweet Grass at 7 and told we could potentially wait 30-40 minutes. That would be completely understandable on a Friday night, had there not been SEVERAL tables empty. The waiting area was packed with people, but no one was clearing tables or making any attempt to seat anyone. The hostess disappeared shortly after we put our name in; several couples walked up to the hostess stand only to immediately walk away because there was no one that could help them. Where did you go, hostess? To stare at your vapid face in the mirror? So no bus staff, no hostess, what about the kitchen staff? Easily seen from the lobby, no one in the kitchen was wearing gloves except the guy making the salads and he also used his gloved hands to sweep the floor. Excellent, I enjoy my salad with a side of broom dirt. No one was wearing hairnets either, even though several people had long hair and beards. None of the women in the kitchen wore their hair up when they dealt with the food, so I'm surprised that I haven't found my a hair in my food yet. So screw you, Sweet Grass! Your po-boy is so insanely delicious but nothing is worth all of that hassle... p.s. your parking lot is too fucking small for all the douchebag hipsters that show up

I'd been hearing great things about Sweet Grass for at least a year and finally had the opportunity to try it out. Boy have I been missing out! When you enter, the restaurant is very spacious and open. We came on a week night and only had to wait a few minutes for a table. Every table is served corn bread with bacon butter. Yes, that's right, bacon butter! And it's as delicious as it sounds. I had a delicious drink that was bourbon based. I love shrimp and grits so I ordered that with a side of fried green tomatoes. The shrimp and grits was amazing - the shrimp was served on top of grit cake with a mixture of onions, tomatoes and something (meat?) with a kick. I'll definitely be back for dinner when I am back in Bloomington!

I went to Sweet Grass for lunch on one of the week days. The service was great and the food came put pretty fast but the place wasn't packed so I can't say for sure. They mainly serve burgers, pizzas and salads during lunch and entrees after 5pm. We ordered a goat cheese fries, smoked burger (? Not sure of the name) and a pizza with tomato and arugula toppings. The fries were a little salty and similar to Farm fries (at the Farm on Kirkwood) with goat cheese. The burger was HOT. They had raw Jalapeños in it so if you aren't great with spicy food, I would stay away from it. The pizza was pretty good. The waitress said the house makes both the beef patty and the dough. The dress code for lunch was casual and based on the overall setting, I'd said dinner would be casual as well. The price was reasonable. Below $10 for most items on the menu for lunch. Overall, I would recommend this place as a casual dining place for family and friends.

I've only been here once, but it was very good. The cornbread was my highlight. I'm always disappointed to find dry cornbread. This was very moist and filled with flavor. You get a lot of food, in my opinion. I ordered the shrimp po'boy. The slaw was tasty, the crunchy shrimp was light and not heavy which was good. The only thing I did not like was the lack of style. I'm not sure if they are going for a warehouse, industrial type style, but it doesn't work for the type of food. The area is too open. I was consistently making awkward eye contact with fellow customers. I am that person who hates to be watched while eating. Eesh. When I go back, I will order out.

I've eaten there a few times and never really been impressed by the food. One thing to note- they do NOT take reservations as the profile says. Also, they said they would not break checks for a large group. Seriously, a computer does the bills... How hard is it to break a check with a computer?

I live right near this place and I am extremely happy about it. They have a great and affordable beer list and generally have great brews on tap. Some of my favorite things include the roast chicken with the delicious red pepper sauce, the fried green tomatoes (appetizer and BLT), and the goat cheese fries. I've had some of the more basic items on the menu (grilled chicken sandwich, etc) and they didn't blow my mind. My boyfriend loves the burger and my sister is a big fan of the steak.

Ate here on the night of a big IU basketball game because it's further from campus. Got right in (it was a Tuesday) Had a nice dinner with personable service. The food came out quickly and though the restaurant was full, the noise level allowed conversation with no strain. I don't understand the negative reviews here. The bathroom was very clean as was the entire restaurant. The food was very good. The cornbread was of the cakier variety, and we all enjoyed it. It's not a gourmet experience, but the prices aren't high either. We had dinner for four (sandwiches and burgers) and four beers for less than $80. I do wish this and more restaurants in Bloomington took reservations.

We really like this place and their southern style food, along with a quality - albeit small - selection of beers on tap. sandwiches are very good and plenty of food, and their pimento mac and cheese (with prosciutto) is decadent comfort food. It's in an odd spot, but that shouldn't stop you.

Sweet Grass has a great variety of really delicious dishes. Their selections are unique, affordable, and tasty. My husband and I frequent this place for dinner and my co-workers and I go there all the time for lunch. Servers are always nice and food is always great, no matter what I order.

Amazing food. Loved this restaurant. I would definitely go back. Service was slower because servers were clearing there own tables. I think they need to hire busboy for that. But worth the wait for the amazing food.
