Their food is ok, they have a lot of variety , noodles, rice, different Chinese dishes, ice cream, sushi, fruits, soups, standard buffet, and if you don't want to go far, this is the most complete buffet you could find in Bloomington, but the foods there are average, not outstanding

  • Betsy L.

The good here is average. As they are the only competitive Chinese buffet in town, they provide a lot of American Chinese good and authentic Chinese good, as well as sushi, fried noodles, and American food. Always a lot of people when you visit on weekends, they have more dishes in dinner time.

Chinese buffet. But no it is not your ordinary Chinese buffet. I don't eat a lot of Chinese food and not their buffets, but mr hibachi is terrific. Nothing sits out forever on the steam table getting old. It is always fresh. There is a raw table and you make a plate and they stir fry it fresh. Crab legs frog legs. Endless favorites. Spanakopita. Yes, at a Chinese buffet. Puff pastry Philly cheese steak. Crab Rangoon. So much variety. There something for everyone. General Tso, chicken a hundred ways. Big tray of salmon. Roast beef here tonight. 7.99 lunch. 11.99 dinner. Can't beat it. I don't get sick after this Chinese food. I was here a week and came here twice.

Visited the restaurant a few weeks ago for lunch and found the entrees to be less than hot. Tried again this week and they were cold. Cold soup and cold pepper steak aren't a good combination. Tried most of the meat entrees and all the same. I believe they open at 11 I was there at noon. The place is very clean service is good and a large variety of offerings however you must like cool or cold food if you are going for lunch.

Okay first time here. Everything looks very tasty. But one common factor was almost everything is spicy. The fresh made sushi was okay. The dessert table.. That's a different story, cookie average, cakes ...eh I would still tell people to eat here but do not call it the best. Fresh sushi yes, the best.... No.

My first experience at this buffet was incredibly disappointing, I could not believe how rude the staff was. Firstly our waitress took our drink order by pointing to a list and asking, "What do you want?" I asked if they served beer and she told me to get a coke as if I offended her by asking. When the drinks came she slammed them on the end of the table and walked away. I should point out that although it was a Friday night, the restaurant was not busy at all. As for the food, I didn't find a single hot dish in the buffet. It was like eating room-temperature leftovers. After my first plate I noticed our waitress watching us, staring, I can honestly say it felt threatening. About a half-hour into our dinner she walked over to our table and interrupted my conversation to ask me to pay. She literally asked for my money. Feeling insulted I ignored the check and tried to continue with my meal. Again however, within 5 minutes our waitress came to our table, pointed at the check and asked me to pay "now." I must point out again that this place was not packed, busy, or understaffed. I handed her my card and when she brought the receipt she stood there to watch me tip and sign. As we left even the hostess stared at us walking out, thinking that this was a different employee and perhaps I had a bad apple I nodded and said thank you only to be ignored and glared at. I'm not sure what I expected. Being a young man in a college town I've grown accustomed to the usual treatment when assumed that I'm a student. I understand that many servers reserve their respect for students assuming that they won't tip. I have never however seen anything such as this.

The dishes has been the same for such a long time, I wish them could change sometimes. But I do appreciate the festival special dishes, they are really Chinese. As a resident that live around Hibachi and goes there once a week, I will give this place a good rating cos it "save my life" in the early days I don't cook.

Food is okay and there are plenty of choices. Many choices of sushi but most not labeled. Tried two but didn't find one I liked so stopped. The spicy pork was good. We came for dinner but thought the prices high. On top of that they charge extra for beverages. Based on price, lunch would be a better choice.

Delish. I take my wives and my 17 kids here all the time. My favorite is the cream cheese wontons. I just want to crawl inside one of them and live there.

BEST BUFFET on the planet I'd say. This place has everything and that is an understatement. Friendly staff. SUSHI! HIBACHI GRILL!!! I met Rupert from Survivor here! A must visit. You gotta try it. AFFORDABLE! Around $8 for lunch. Like $12 for dinner

I'm not typically a buffet person but Mr Hibachi is by far the best Chinese buffet I've been to. It was reasonably priced, the food was flavorful and fresh, and it was a quick way to grab lunch. The dessert options were minimal but I'm not a dessert man. Overall, great lunch experience. I will not be visiting again because the food was so yummy and had so many option that I tried everything on the buffet and now I am stuffed like a thanksgiving turkey! If u come bring an appetite because u will devour a lot!

I am giving Mr. Hibachi a 5-star rating with the footnote that I'm comparing it to other buffet-style restaurants. They have a variety of options including sushi, limited hibachi, American Chinese food, and some American food (cheese sticks). Some days they also have more traditional Chinese food, and they also have snow crab legs on holidays. The snow crab legs are actually excellently-prepared. Many of their desserts are the standard Chinese buffet fare, but they also make some in-house, including a delicious graham cracker custard coated in melted chocolate. Despite the fact that it is a buffet, I have never been rushed, and servers have been incredibly kind.

Fantastic! Clean, comfortable dining area with great food. Lots to choose from, lots of freshly made Chinese dishes, big salad bar, fresh fruit bar, Mongolian style choose your ingredients and they grill it, ice cream and loads of desserts. DELISHIOUS, hot, affordable food and a sweet staff. We're from Iowa attending a bluegrass festival. We'll be back next year!

Great food for the money, especially for the lunch, only $7.50. Sushi bar and Mongolian by the way are very decent.

Very Good Chinese Buffet my son loved the froglegs. He had never had them before. Good price one the best chinese buffet I have had as far as taste.

I really enjoy this place. I have yet to have a bad meal here. Everything is fresh and so full of flavor. It's a great place to get the family together and have a great dinner!

Good food, good service, still the best buffet I've had in the States

  • Nic N.

Hands down the best Chinese buffet in Bloomington. Dinner is a little pricey, I will admit, but it's totally worth the few extra dollars. The food is always fresh, and they have delicious house-made sushi and (obviously) a hibachi grill, all included in the buffet price. They have "traditional" Chinese (i.e. Americanized Chinese) cuisine as well as a decent sized salad bar and dessert bar, and a few non-Chinese-buffet items for your friends who just aren't that into Chinese food. Also just as I was preparing to leave, a group of about 2 dozen strapping young Marines came in, so apparently there is also occasionally a buffet for the eyes. I will go again. And again. And again.

Can't go wrong here!!! The food is amazing and so many choices! The Sudo is made fresh, the Mongolian bar has fresh ingredients. Highly recommended!

Heard many good things about this restaurant, so I finally decided to try dinner out. Definitely not what my group and I were expecting. The food was a bit cold, not much taste to the Chinese food, sushi was mediocre, and the desserts were a bit stale. Not coming back and I wouldn't recommend it.

  • Chris P.

Food was great. Peanut butter chicken is excellent. However, hostess was very rude. I asked for my check three times, and after my third time asking she vacuumed the dining room. I finally went up to the counter and asked for it there where they apologized for the bad service.

Before we even moved to Bloomington, I actually had a couple of job interviews at IU. Being curious about Bloomington, and always looking for good, authentic Chinese food (I lived in China in high school, my dad is married to a Chinese woman and he himself cooks excellent Chinese food), I asked a Chinese woman at an interview what her favorite Chinese place was. I realize now that may have been construed as a bit racist, but I was genuinely curious what she thought and, in the interview, I realized I didn't want the job anyway. But, maybe out of spite for that, she suggested this place. Now having spent time in town, I know that this is very far from the best Chinese place in town. I mean, they have decent Chinese-American food, but that's not why I come here. My time to come is Saturday for lunch, at about 11:30. Not because I'm that kind of freak about habitual eating (it's only about once a month we come), but because Saturday offers the same $7.50 buffet that the weekdays do, and getting there later means more of a crowd, and earlier means that not as much food is out. I've figured this out over time. Included in that $7.50 price tag are sushi and hibachi. I could not give less of a crap about the hibachi, but that sushi is actually the main reason I come here as often as I do. I mean, it's all you can eat, and it's halfway decent. They have several variations on California rolls, including a rainbow with slivers of fish on top, a smoked salmon (gross) Philly, tofu skin, and the occasional eel. I've also seen some tempura rolls on the line before. The wasabi is fresh though. I could eat nothing but this mediocre sushi and feel like I've gotten an excellent deal. For the other food, they do actually have some reasonably healthy, non-fried options, but a lot of it is the cheap Golden Corral variety, but with an Asian twist. They have some really awful kimchi in the salad bar section, for instance. The salad bar, overall, is pretty bad: iceberg, cheap pasta salad, wilted spinach, that horrible pudding that comes in cans... And they also have a smelly seafood tray that I've never been able to brave. And I should mention that their desserts are awful. I tend to make the mistake of getting some because, honestly, they look SO good. But you actually eat them, and they're awful. It's weird, but it stems from them all being from Sam's or whatever wholesaler they shop at, where they're made for presentation and not for taste. So don't be fooled. Service is always excellent. They have an army of Chinese women that run around the place, refilling drinks and cleaning up (this place is one of the cleanest restaurants in town). It seems to be very well-run. And it's very popular with the Asian community, who typically make up at least 50% of the diners, which may say something to you. I would not come here looking for real Chinese food though. If you're looking for Chinese buffet sort of food, with lots of batter and oil, then this is probably one of the better options in town. But at least try some of that sushi.

The Walmart of AYCE Chinese food, they even have sushi and hibachi included in the lunch price, which is under 8 bucks prior to the tax -- in 2014, no less! Alas, to be able to get such great value, something had to give -- the place is relatively far from the rest of the town, so it's an extra trip and gas mileage. But their selection and quality is well worth the extra trip. Just make sure to not overeat, which is probably the main challenge here -- the selection and variety of food is simply obscene, and I've only been to their under-8-buck lunch menu! Their desert isle alone spans more than 2 isles, and is bigger then the whole buffet selection in any other restaurant elsewhere in town!

Been here a few times. It's good, but not great. Mr. Hibachi is definitely taking advantage of the new buffet paradigm where they offer sushi as well as non-Chinese fare like roast beef, cheese sticks, etc. There's a huge range food, so if you have picky eaters or have a large group this is a fairly good place to ensure everyone finds something they'll like. It suffers from the usual buffet disadvantages...loads of MSG, food quality depending on how much turnover there is. There's definitely better Chinese and Sushi to be had, but for a huge buffet it's not a bad choice. On a side note; being a college town, there's a definite delineation between "townies" and folks here just for the University. I felt like I was finally a fully certified Bloomington townie when I was directing someone here by referencing a long-closed business. "Mr Hibachi?" "Yeah, it's in the old Ryan's Steakhouse location."

Definitely very good for Chinese buffet food--probably one of the best Chinese buffets I have been to and so much to choose from! The food temperature was good, the food was fresh, and everything seemed clean. As others have said, the interior appearance is much better than other buffets in town. My only complaint is this: We arrived an hour and a half before closing and the staff were shutting things down already even though there were quite a few full tables in the restaurant. They were mopping the floors, sweeping the carpets, etc. and were kind of rude. However, it wasn't enough of a problem that I would never go back there again--the food really was good!

I'm a big fan of this place. I think it's the best Chinese buffet in Bloomington by far. It is a little off the beaten path (for those of us centered around the university), but it's worth the trip. The variety of food in the buffet is unmatched in my opinion. It's a nice touch that there actually is hibachi (included in the price) if you want it. I tend to go for whatever else is around. I haven't had any complaints about the food. It's your standard Chinese buffet cuisine--incredibly unhealthy for you but oh-so-delicious. I found the egg rolls to be better than some of the other buffets in town. Its price is probably the best part. It really isn't that much more than some of the buffets in town (actually cheaper compared to some). It's cheaper during lunch time (ends at 3) and definitely a steal. Though more expensive in dinner, I still think it's well worth your money if you get several plates. The service is generally decent. They clean empty plates quickly and for the most part they don't get in the way of your conversation with family/friends. Courteous and polite (most of the time). This is probably one of my favorite spots in Bloomington because it tastes great and the price is right. (Check for coupons in the mall magazine that comes to your house too!)

I am from out of town, and this restaurant sure beats our locals. The food was of better quality and was delicious (shocker for a buffet). The ribs fell off the bone and the sauce was very good They were more like rib house ribs then those things with red stuff on them.. The fried shrimp was sweet. The egg rolls were quite good as was the chicken on a stick. My wife really liked the hibachi chicken. I didn't try dessert as the ribs etc. filled me up. I will return whenever I need to go to Bloomington. I am jealous that we don't have this quality in the chinese slop houses close to me.

We go here a lot because there's enough variety to satisfy everyone's taste and the buffet style makes it kid-friendly (no waiting for food). Also, the service has always been good for us.

THere are more rows of food here than at Walmart. The sushi is so fresh it still wiggles. And it is appropriately, even on holidays. But don't bring you disabled loved ones with walkers or crutches. No old people or children tandhat run. Basically Derby girls, and men in golf cleats. The floors are slick iced tile of doom. And the accessibility stall in the restroom has a firm bar, a good lock, and a toilet a clear five miles away from the toilet paper dispenser-- which is filled with paper the tinsel strength of Graham crackers but weighs too much to spin on its wheel. It was my version of Hell: surrounded by delicious nibbles, all of them trecherously out of reach. Alas, I am afraid the temptation is just to great.

Great prices, but the food is just ok. I don't quite understand the hype. It's the best chinese/japanese buffet that I've been too, but I'm not a fan of buffets because the food is normally so-so or very poor. Mr. Hibachi is just so-so, but pretty good for the price and for the fact that it's a buffet. Overall, I'd prefer a regular Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant sans buffet.

Chinese, sushi, American buffet fare -- what's not to like?! The food at Mr. Hibachi is plentiful and tasty. It's a great place to take larger groups with varying tastes because there's a little something there for everybody. Every time I've been there, there has been one employee continuously making a small variety of fresh sushi. Nothing interesting enough to wow a die-hard sushi fanatic, but it satisfies my occasional cravings. There are also soups and appetizers and rice and tons of different classic Americanized Chinese dishes. It's a good thing you can easily fill up on savory dishes, though, because the desserts leave a bit to be desired -- mostly institutional-size canned pudding and off-brand ice cream cups. The fresh fruit usually looks pretty decent, but if you're really looking for something sweet to finish your meal, you're better off stopping by Bruster's on your way home. The waitstaff are not particularly warm or friendly, but that hardly matters at a buffet restaurant. Plus the food is always piping hot and the place seems very clean. You can also sometimes score dollar-off coupons in that bundle of junk mail ads that comes in the mail every week, which makes a great value even better.

I'm not prone to hyperbole. With that said, this is easily the worst Chinese buffet I've ever been to, and I've been to my fair share. It's a vey nice and clean place, but the food quality is the worst I've had at a buffet..a category where the bar is already pretty low when it comes to quality. The sushi is slimy. The standard Chinese fare is sub-standard. The crab legs are over-cooked in the same nasty water all day. My tea mug was full of spider webs and the waiter seemed annoyed when I asked for another one. Needless to say, I wont be back.

Mr. Hibachi is the best asian style buffet in Bloomington. Selection is huge, they serve not only asian style food, but also some comfort food like roast beef, corn on the knob, etc. I don't like their soups (texture), but I know people who think they're good so I guess it's a personal taste. Sushi bar included in the buffet, and they tipycally have around 8-12 kinds of rolls/sushi available. Hibachi grill (included as well) is great, you can make your own freshly grilled entree mixing different kinds of meat and vegetables. Variety of food can please anybody, I think it's the biggest asian buffet in Bloomington, and their salad bar is nice too, it's not only lettuce and other greens, but actually salads with seafood, something similar to coleslaw and a few more substantial salads. Their desserts are not very good and on a really cheapy side so I skip them, but most of the times to the time of dessert I'm too full to try it anyway. Food is usually very fresh and well cooked. And it's the only buffet in bloomington where (dinner time only) you can find such food like grilled squids. Price is very reasonable for such a good buffet, it's something around $8 for lunch and $11 for dinner (drinks separately). Pretty much there is almost no difference in food selection for lunch and dinner, just a few meals are different (like I haven't seen roast beef or squids for lunch). Service is good for buffet. I've been in this place at least a dozen of times if not more and never was disappointed. Will come back again!

While visiting from California, we ate here on New Years Eve. Very good buffet. 10 buffet tables, and seating around the perimeter. Wide variety of food- sushi, hibachi, Chinese fare, salads, desserts, soups, many entree choices. Fresh food, hot, very good service. We were pleasantly surprised, we were not expecting much from a Midwest buffet, but it was very good. I'd go back there again.

Best Chinese buffet in town. It has the biggest variety of food by far, and most of it tastes pretty good.

    (5)
  • Richard H.

Chinese buffets are, by definition, awful, awful plcaes. Surprisingly, Mr. Hibachi is not awful. OK, yeah, it has pudding and Jell-O with marshmallows and cheese sticks and the other stuff typical to bad Chinese buffets, but it also has a lot of other stuff that is surprisingly not bad -- the fried rice and crunchy chicken were actually quite good. And they have sushi, which is pretty OK, and a hibachi. The selection, by the way, is enormous.

    (3)
  • Scott C.

Very mediocre, food was very bland. Food wasn't that hot either. Better Chinese buffet choices in Bloomington than this place.

    (3)
  • Amy B.

I love this place! It's a good, Chinese buffet with tons and tons of choices. They keep the food fresh and rotate it out. They also include sushi and the hibachi grill in the price, and for a buffet place both of those options are quite good as well. It's clean, and the staff are attentive about keeping your drinks filled and taking away old plates. All in all, great place!

  • Jillian R.

I went here expecting a mediocre Chinese buffet and that is exactly what I found. It is a little deceiving when you first walk in and see the steaming hot tables of food. Everything looks hot and fresh but it just doesn't taste that way when you are eating it. The flavors were good but everything was room temperature. We arrived at 11;30 shortly after it had opened so there really was no reason for the food to be cold. However, I wasn't expecting much so I wasn't to disappointed. The only item that was hot was the soup and it scalded the top of my mouth. I guess you just cant win. It was though the most flavorful item available. One last piece of advice, the desserts are horrible. They were serving burnt (I mean black!) cookies and brownies hard enough to break your teeth. The only saving grace in the dessert department was the sugar donuts. Those always hit the spot. The service was great and plates were cleared quickly, and absolute must at a buffet! Probably the best Chinese buffet in town, so if you are looking for a place to gorge yourself on sub-par food, you have found it here at Mr. Hibachi!

    (3)
  • Brendan I.

This is my go-to weekend place. Their buffet offerings are plentiful, and the price is right (I think it's only $8ish most days). Despite the ho-hum appearance of the exterior, it's actually really nice on the inside - one of the better decorated Chinese buffets I've visited. The staff are friendly, too. Obviously, Mr. Hibachi doesn't hold a candle to the ethnic spots on 4th Street, but it's a good option for large groups who want a lot of food. Come hungry!

  • Franklin D.

If you're going to a Chinese buffet, it should probably be this one. Most of the others in the area are....shitty. They keep the food stocked and hot as hell (steam pumping out of the tables is a good sign). It's quite busy, so that's a good sign... they have to keep putting fresh stuff out.

    (4)
  • Mark P.

Worst customer service ever. Especially Susan, the owner. Took a group of underserved teens to experience the buffet and felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable that we left without finishing our meals. When I tried to speak to Susan about the experience she was equally as rude and disrespectful. Never going there again..

There are several Chinese Buffets in Bloomington but I think that Mr. Hibachi is probably the best option. The price is a little higher than other Chinese Buffets in the area but the restaurant is clean and has a diverse offering on the buffet including sushi, Mongolian barbecue, etc.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
