Enjoyed cheese dip and guacamole for appetizers. They arrived quickly and were quite tasty. Service was prompt and frequent. The main course was chicken chimichanga with beans only. It was quite filling. I have enjoyed the food here for several years. It's a family run business.

La Torre is like if Scrooge McDuck ran a Mexican restaurant. 1. You get one (1) bowl of chips (good, freshly made) and salsa (mediocre.) For additional bowls, there is a charge. 2. My entree was 7.99 and I got three small enchiladas and was offered the choice of rice OR beans. Really? 3. The bathroom had one very dim light bulb and no paper towels. Pluses: they make the taco shells fresh each day. They were delicious, best I've had in Bloomington. Also, the decor is really cute. Minuses: almost everything else. The food is fine, but you get more of it at about the same quality for the same price at any other Mexican restaurant in town. For mediocre Mexican food (which is all there is around here) just go to Casa Brava or La Charreada where your entree is big enough to have a little to take home.

La Torre is to Mexican food as Jerry Sandusky is to small boys. Outside of the bottled beer, everything was independently among the worst of that type of food item I've ever had.

I have to agree with another reviewer that I am surprised that there are so many low-star reviews. Like one other reviewer I am also a SoCal transplant, Los Angeles to be exact, and I have to agree with the general consensus that Bloomington is just not going to ever be famous for their Mexican restaurants. However, having been to Juannitas and El Norteno, La Torre gets my vote for the best option in town when you're craving Mexican food. I have only been once but the food was comparatively the best I've had in town. They also have great margaritas (much, much better than at Juannitas and at El Norteno you can only order beer), and I could order mine blended. Many bars in town do not have blenders, which to me is crazy. So far so good for me. I would suggest that if you've never gone it is well worth a try.

La Torre is as authentic as you can get for Mexican food. The Salazar's are so friendly and take care of you from door in to door out. The bean dip is amazing and drizzled with queso. Ask the server what you should get, they definitely know the ins and outs as they do not have a lot of turnover.

Wish I could give no stars. This place is horrible and I have no idea how they're still in business. Absolutely horrible service from the get go. Took the server 15 minutes to get us chips and drinks, even though he he no other tables (I'm a server I know how it works). We finally order our food and get our drinks after about 30 minutes. Our food come out and part of it isn't right, but what is correct tasted absolutely horrible. I got enchiladas verdes; the chicken tasted like water and the verdes sauce was questionable. One of the dishes was a shrimp taco salad that contained 75% lettuce and hardly any shrimp. We sent the dish back and said we didn't want to replace it. When we asked to have the dish removed from the bill our server informed us that he expected us to pay for it because their manager was home asleep. After about 15 awkward minutes the problem was solved. As we were leaving the manager emerged from the kitchen and waved us off. Never ever ever ever ever will I ever come back here. Ever. Horrible.

Only place to find micheladas! Not bad, not good! But the size of it is ridiculous and almost 7 dlls for a super small michelada! I tried the steak fajitas, they were ok! Nothing special about them Service is excellent!

i'm kind of surprised by all the bad reviews. la torre has been a staple restaurant of mine since i was in high school so...late 90s/early 2000s. i get the same thing every time, i will admit. but that's because it's huge & awesome (chicken quesadilla). & i love their mexican rice. plus that quesadilla is like less than 5 bucks & the size of a dinner plate. my friends & i also always get the queso with our chips. has to be done! i did order chicken tortilla soup once & it was the most bland thing i've ever had but i'll let that slide this once. either way, still love la torre!

Whenever I visit my parents in Bloomington, we end up here, and I am always disappointed. I've finally learned not to order the chile rellenos; they always taste as though they were made hours, if not days before. During our most recent visit it was just as mediocre as ever. As mentioned by other yelpers, the chips do not taste fresh and the salsa is bland. We got the cheese dip this time as well and it was just icky. I got the grilled chicken breast, and I think that might be the safest bet. It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible. People often defend Mexican (or other "ethnic" restaurants) by pointing out that they are owned by people cooking their native cuisine. I've been to enough mediocre "American" restaurants around the world that were run by Americans to shoot down that argument. On the other hand, this is Bloomington, Indiana, and I'm not sure there is such a thing as a good Mexican restaurant here.

I really want to like this restaurant. The staff always seem so happy to see you. Fast and friendly service. Thus, 2 stars. After reading some of your reviews I was hoping they had made an effort to improve their food. Nope! Watery salsa, stale chips, very limited lunch menu, and everything was very bland. Guess they don't know about jalapenos, cilantro, garlic, onion, etc... Beer was great. I hope this place can improve.

I never thought I would say this but the food here is actually bland. I've been here twice and thought the same thing. It was ok but I couldn't see coming here again. The service was ok as well.

Came to eat and service was very bad! The employees were very loud and laughing a lot.. Ignoring the customers.. Not coming back ever!

Ripoff. Food portions are tiny, way overpriced, and the service is terrible. Our terrible service was graciously provided by a skinny guy with glasses and quite a b****y attitude. Had to ask to bring us chips. AT A MEXICAN RESTAURANT. Guac was just sitting on the table alone for 15 minutes. Salsa was utterly tasteless. Ordered a drink when we sat down and the drink came near the end of the meal! Are we on a hidden camera show? Seriously? Brought my vegan friend her dish with a huge lump of sour cream. Verde sauce was watery and tasteless. Taco salad was $15, had almost no meat, and was 75% shredded lettuce. Server told us there was NO MANAGER even on duty, at 9pm, so he couldn't take anything off of our bill. Was being extremely slow on purpose, since we were the ONLY TABLE IN THE RESTAURANT. Would be surprised if this janky place stays open longer than 6 months.

Not sure why this place got such low marks. The food here is wonderful and the service is great! Highly recommend the chicken fajitas! Stop by to visit...

I created a Yelp account just to say how terrible this food is. I've never had bad Mexican food before, I didn't even know it could be bad...until I ate at La Torre. Absolutely disgusting.

Salsa was watery, not sure what was wrong with it, but it didn't look right or taste right. The food was great, the staff was great! Gave good recommendations for food and will probably go back!

Worst service ever....waitress did not write down order and it became my fault when she delivered the wrong entree. She promised a quick replacement which never came. Left with no dinner and she charged me two bucks for my iced tea. I won't be going back. I'd like to give zero stars.

So here is another example of something that I really wanted to like. But it just didn't get there. First, the positive- we came for Sunday lunch after church and found that they have a Sunday Brunch menu, and that it included an option for fresh squeezed juices. They even brought a sample to our table which was very good. However, more than $3 for one glass was a bit much for my desired budget, so I passed. I hoped that the brunch menu would be a nice change of pace and add something to the choices for a Sunday out. However, basically, the brunch menu was a few different breakfast burrito choices, and various egg dishes (Huevos something or other...) So it just wasn't all that. Then this is Mexican restaurant in Bloomington. There are several supposed "authentic" Mexican restaurants in town. Since I've been to Mexican restaurants in Texas and California and have a Hispanic sister-in-law, they just don't measure up for me. Is it reasonably priced for a meal out, yes. Is it a culinary experience which left me yearning for more... not even close. So I would have gone 3 stars, but then they hit my pet peeve. The service was pretty good until it came to clearing the table and getting the check. We had to go to the counter, ask for it, have it rung up and stand there and pay. I (and notably my children) get very antsy about 45 minutes in any restaurant, and especially when the food is gone and we're just waiting. This part of the meal can break the experience for me, and in this case, on this visit to La Torre, we took 30 minutes to order and eat, and after 20 minutes of waiting, we had to go ask. At the desk because our server was nowhere to be found. Disappointed overall. And the nonexistent check at the end of the meal was a big turn off. That said, this is my in-laws' go to Bloomington Mexican place and my kids ate all of their food, so not a total loss. Just not a big win either.

My wife, son, and I visited again last night, and we continue to be impressed. The service was outstanding. Kudos to Ryan for making the experience top notch. We each tired something different this time, and we all were extremely happy with our choices. Once again, the portions were large, and the food was tasty. We will be back again soon! We highly recommend it.

This was three stars, now two. We've eaten here about a dozen times in three years. It has good and bad days, but the bad ones aren't as bad as the other reviews I've read. No, this isn't eclectic Tex-Mex or CalMex. It's a family run operation with decent food at a reasonable price. And it is WIGGY. Some days pretty good. On other days, there must a revolt in the kitchen or someone's trapped in there and trying to send a message to the outside world. Of the entres we've had, all were good to very good. There's quite a selection, and you should know your costs by reading them first-- like refills on drinks, etc. The food is spiced at tourist levels; remember this is Indiana where they often don't spice offerings very much. You can ask for and get a green salsa that's not a mole, but good green salsa you can substitute for it. Why? Imagine they're known to send delicious chile rellenos out of the kitchen -naked-. We haven't had any alcohol there. But the food flavor is good and it's fresh from what we can tell. I can usually recommend the chiles rellenos, and nicely, the refried beans aren't made with lard. Vegetarians can tell and appreciate that. It does get crowded, and there are at least a half-dozen alternatives within an actual stone's throw of the restaurant. Summary: good on a budget; has good and bad days. But they just tipped the fulcrum towards bad days. I have a guess, but it's only a guess: they need a manager that can go in and kick ass and take names. It's really not bad. It's just frustrating for the details they miss.

Great food, great service! Weekend brunches are awesome with all kinds of fresh juices! The best Mexican restaurant in btown hands down!

There is only one word I can use to describe this food: vile. Almost insultingly so. To date, in the top 3 worst meals I've ever had. The cheese enchilada actually made me sick. AVOID AVOID AVOID

I am just getting straight to the point with this establishment: it really f'n sucks. I feel sorry for the people who think this place is good. Like most tex-mex restaurants, chips and salsa were served to me and my friend upon sittingl. The only flavor the chips had was a corny staleness after the hard crunch. The salsa had no spice of any kind, it tasted like a cucumber and very sugary. We ordered a side of cheese dip and a strawberry margarita as we looked at the menu. The cheese dip was extremely runny and the only flavor was the actual cheese. There was no salsa or hot sauce on the table, just sugar, salt, and pepper. We decided we would drink the margarita and just go somewhere else. The $6 margarita came in a MUG. WTF? It was mainly all alcohol and just tasted awful. It looked like a strawberry-lemonade milkshake. I have never seen, nor tasted a margarita like this. After trying to get the server's attention multiple times she finally came over and I told her about the margarita. She offered to have another made and was nice (in a very fake way!), I just had her take it off the bill. As we walked out my friend saw the server tell the employees in the back it had too much alcohol and they drank out of our straws! I understand alcohol has the potential to kill germs but drinking on the job and not even switching the straws out ew! This place is over-priced and you only get beans or rice with an entrée, every tex-mex restaurant I have ever been to gives a plate with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, tomato and sometimes guacamole too. The one thing this place had going for itself was that it looked clean. I will never return, the quality of food is just horrible for the price and slow service.

Being from So Cal I have to say I am not being fair, but to my defense there are NO good Mexican joints here in Bloomington. However, this place out of the ones I've tried so far came the closest as far as that authentic taste I was missing. I had the carnitas plate, which the meat was suprisingly really good. The salsa, chips, and tortillas...meh... So, if you're like me and miss Mexican food and realize there's only so much to offer here then try this place.

A family favorite. Yes, it's closer to "inauthentic" than to "authentic" but it's closer to "darn tasty" than either one. Pork ribs with zucchini, carnitas, and fajitas are my regular favorites (all are essentially different ways of serving tasty sauteed meats and vegetables with tortillas and Mexican fixings.) Salsa is good. Cheese sauce is excellent. You'd be hard-pressed to find Mexican food this good within 200 miles.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
