It's probably the best you can get for $5...but McDonalds might be a better option. Crab Rangoon was soggy, very soggy. Rice was dry and hard. Beef and broccoli entree was overcooked.

As far as Chinese take out is concerned, this place is decent. We have ordered delivery a few times and the food comes quickly and is always very hot. Fast-forward to this evening, when my husband and I were feeling especially worn out from the week and didn't feel like making dinner for ourselves and 2 children. We ordered 2 dinners and some fried dumplings. The food came quickly but we were missing our egg rolls, not the end of the world. When we called to let them know we were missing some food, the owner yelled at my husband and called him a liar, stated that he knows we received the egg rolls. We didn't receive the egg rolls, and he should have attempted to rectify the situation but refused. When I myself called the restaurant the driver admitted that initially he forgot the egg rolls and returned to the store to get them. He then said he put them in the bag and he can't explain why we don't get them, but was bringing them back to us. I don't give a monkey's butt about 2 stupid egg rolls. I do, however, care about customer service. This place doesn't know a damn thing about that.

I wish I could give this place no stars. Worst thing I've ever ingested. Threw it away after 2 bites. I'll put it this way, a few years back I got food poisoning for a restaurant. I would have rather eaten that food then what I just ate from here. Took an hour and a half to get, was cold when I got it, the chicken was so dry it could have passed for fake plastic chicken. Very disappointed. And hungry. Never ordering from house of hunan again. I advise you to do the same.

Worst Chinese food the 3 of us have ever eaten. It has a weird chemical taste an idea confirmed by all. I would not file this under food, we were starving & threw out our food it was so bad. You have been warned.

Wish I would have read the reviews here before ordering again. We had really liked this place four years ago or so and ordered food from House of Hunan at least once a month. After moving back to Bloomington this year we ordered food and it was all gross. So we didn't order again until last night. We asked if they would split our check $20 on our card and the rest in cash (splitting the check up). The food arrived with a receipt that showed a $20 charge to our card and we paid the rest in cash. The food itself was gross. The Lo Mein and General Tso's were both inedible. Unfortunately, when we checked our bank this morning the full amount was charged to our card (even though we only signed for a $20 charge AND had paid the rest in cash). We called to speak with a manager, but he was too busy to speak with us so he called back later. We asked what happened, he explained that he put the full charge on our card, but went in last night and fixed it. We complained about the food but he said he couldn't refund a credit card (even though he was able to charge the card and go back in that night to change the amount he charged it). He said he would not refund money for the poor food we didn't eat. I mentioned that dealing with customers like this will get you a bad reputation in a small town and that we'd be writing a yelp review. The manager got defensive and began freaking out saying we were "threatening him." Apparently, the manager is threatened by the possibility of the public finding out how terrible both the food AND service are from this restaurant. I think that speaks for itself. There are plenty of places in Bloomington that offer great tasting food along with a courteous and professional service. There's no reason to waste your money here.

Worst customer service ! The manager actually hung up on me and said "whatever" when I was inquiring about my order that had taken an hour and a half when we are with in 10 min of the business ! Such assholes! I would not waste ur time or money with this business !

You may look at the prices and be excited but believe me- it's not worth it. The food is so poorly cooked and tasteless. Worst Chinese in Bloomington. Worst service in Bloomington.

That is the last straw. Do NOT order from this place!! Not only is the food "meh" quality, it's incredibly oily and has a tendency to be tasteless. I get better out of frozen food! Delivery took over an hour (~1 hour 40 minutes) and EVERY TIME that I have ordered a drink from them it's been EXPIRED. I will NEVER order from this place again. And I warn you not to as well!

Open until midnight.... usually. There is a sign outside that says they close early in the summer. The 2 for $12 deal is decent.

Fast delivery & good food. Very reasonably priced. The egg roll I got with my meal was outstanding.

Delivery was fast. The food was not very good. I had the Orange chicken and it was overly fatty, too crunchy in some places, and the flavor (in my opinion), was not great. I paid more than I would've liked for the food that I got. I was disappointed.

I'm used to $5 chinese food from a family oriented restaurant in Chicago. My family has supported their business for 20+ years, so Chinese food is something I am familiar with and really enjoy. House of Hunan just fails. Don't waste your money here. I have ordered the beef and broccoli almost every time i order, but House of Hunan makes me feel that they served me roasted rubber covered in sauce. The meat is cut very thinly and I always have to ask for less broccoli because I mainly receive broccoli whenever I order Beef and Broccoli. And to top it off, its almost $7 for a small serving of Beef and Broccoli. You're serving me rubber for $7? House of Hunan, if you want to save your business please rethink the cuts of meat you use. It is chewy and unappealing. Meat is supposed to be savory, moist, and soft. Your beef is chewy and unpleasant. Also, please make your white rice moist. Whenever I order, the white rice is a mixture of textures: some of it is dry and crispy (almost as if it was fried beforehand) and the other is steamed (but not moist and a bit hard). White rice is not hard to make. House of Hunan used to be a great restaurant to visit, but it has gone SEVERELY downhill. I have ordered here for 3 years, but I recently made the decision to stop buying from this business. Not worth it AT ALL.

I also think this is the worst Chinese Restaurant (and I use the term loosely) I have ever been to! I just moved back to Bloomington after many years, so don't know any of the Chinese restaurants. We found this hole-in-the -wall place in a small strip mall. We were desperate for some Chinese food, so even after we saw the interior, which was a little scary, we decided to stay anyway. The place is tiny. The restaurant is split right down the middle from the front door. To the right after you enter is a small room---a large floor freezer on the left wall, and the same on the right wall, taped shut with duct tape. There is also a small computer table on the wall next to the freezer with a desktop computer (free Wi-fi? or, their business computer??). Walls (white?)are heavily scuffed and marked. A few things hang on them (but not at all like what you see in most Chinese restaurants). Everything looks VERY dirty! On the left side room after you enter the restaurant is a short counter, with just enough room in front of it, for two metal/plastic chairs facing it. On the far left wall, crowding out the "waiting area" are boxes and boxes of fortune cookies, sauces, etc. If you're standing, you can see the "kitchen" which is the entire long room and beyond. Some plastic-coated wire shelves fill the wall with cooking supplies, pots and pans, Everything on this side of the room looks disheveled and dirty. Actually, the place looks gross, so I don't know what we were thinking! (Hungry?) One (greasy-looking--[sorry!]) guy was cooking. He seemed to be the only Chinese person around. There were 2-3 delivery boys milling around, and coming and going. We ordered: Appetizer: scallion pancake; Entrees: eggplant w/ brown sauce, family style tofu w/ spicy sauce, & the Kung Bao potato. The "chef" asked me if I wanted the garlic sauce instead of the "brown sauce" on the eggplant. I don't like brown sauce so ordered the garlic sauce. The meal came with rice and fortune cookies. We paid almost $30. When we got home and put everything on the plate, all you could see was black burnt food, "brown" sauce (what happened to the red spicy sauce and the garlic sauce??), and grease (which tasted old). There wasn't a single other color on the plate, other than rice. The eggplant was so limp and overcooked, it just disintegrated in your mouth. We only took a few tastes and that was it. I urge you to go on their website and look at the photos!! Hilariously beautiful and appetizing... HA! As you can imagine, the food was almost inedible. I don't think I can say ONE nice thing about this place. I definitely would urge people NOT to go there, even if you're starving for Chinese food late at night and they are the only place that's open!

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE!!!! I used to order from this place; their food is good every 3 out of 4 attempts I would say. But when it is that time it is bad, it is really bad!! This last time I ordered from them, I ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken like I always do. When I got it, there was hardly any breading on it and the breading that was on it was so soggy it would fall off when I picked the chicken up. I tried calling them to complain and ask for store credit or maybe my money back because it wasn't the usual chicken I order but not only did the manager refuse to give me my chicken but he told me it was my fault the chicken was soggy and that I should have came to he restaurant to pick it up if I don't want it soggy.... Terrible customer service! They should not remain open if this is how they think you run a business.

Ugh. You get one star now, House of Hunan. You can have the rest when you start acting like the restaurant I used to know and love. I don't know what has happened to this place over the past few years. I remember ordering all the time in 2008, 2009, because of the price, speed, and the fact that the food was absolutely delicious. Now? They still have the speedy delivery, I'll give them that for sure. But I just ordered a variety of food, and it's all pretty terrible. Honest Abe, I cannot even identify what they gave me to put in the lettuce wraps. It's this black mass of chopped... food stuffs. Chicken? Beef? I have no idea. It tastes and looks disgusting. The lettuce is very fresh and crisp, though. I'll save that for a salad. The chicken looked okay, but when I opened it, the gross smell was almost over-powering. And the entree itself tastes disgusting, like spoiled vegetables. I have no complaints with the egg roll or the crab rangoon (though admittedly, I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to these.) Also, my Coke was nice and cold. I can't believe I just spent $28 on all of this awful food. The only thing I can eat is the lettuce, egg roll and rangoon. The... whatever, for the lettuce wraps, and the whole entree are literally going straight in the garbage. They should give you a doctor's note and a roll of tums with your order.

Fast as hell delivery but the foods pretty dull. I had the fried dumplings, which are one of my favorite dishes anywhere else, I've eaten dog food (I only report on what I do, I don't judge me so you shouldn't either), that had better flavor. We tried on several different occasions to order different entrees to get our fix but most were not that great. But if you want mediocre food delivered before you have a chance to hang up the phone, this is the place for you.

To give this 'restaurant' a review is almost giving it credence as an acceptable place to eat. I'd like to give this negative stars.... This IS ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS. I would hope NO ONE ever has to SUFFER from the ingestion of the burnt, nasty slop that this establishment tries to pawn off as food. They should close. REALLY - I award this place no points and may the creator of this universe have mercy on their souls for the FILTH they delivered to us. I want to open more yelp accounts - JUST FOR THE PURPOSE of SAVING PEOPLE from EVEN HAVING TO SMELL the waste products that they attempt to serve. This food makes me want to punch puppies and insult the elderly. No crab in the crab rangoon - and it was just awful despite that....the sauce tasted like a stale lemon. The Shrimp Egg Roll / Veggie Spring Roll / Egg Roll were EXACTLY THE SAME overcooked in rotten oil. The lo mein - if you could even insult the name by calling it that - tasted like burnt peanuts and their was NOTHING in it - even though I am CERTAIN that I ordered VEGETABLES....well there was A vegetable in it - broccoli. Hot/ Sour Soup - Tasted and smelled of dirty dish water - tasted no less marvelous. Eggplant with white rice - HOLY PISS!!! Even the white rice was botched. Obviously the eggplant suffered from under-cooking and the sauce on top was MONUMENTALLY a disaster. It tasted like they took a jar of pre-packaged Chinese sauce and dumped it on top of eggplant that wasn't cooked. My dog even turned up her nose at this food. I just opened the fortune cookie, and it said, " YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A HORRIBLE MEAL" I wish I could have gotten that fortune cookie before the meal. I would rather strike myself about the nether regions with a hot tire iron than have anyone else suffer from eating here.

Not bad but there are better options in Bloomington. I was disappointed to spend $9 on a pint of beef and broccoli and not get any rice. Small detail but other Chinese restaurants throw it in. Delivery was as advertised (40 minutes) but the delivery guy was a little short even though I tipped a solid 19% on top of delivery fee and processing fee. Overall I was underwhelmed.

Only 1 star because i had to give them something, General Tso's chicken is awful, the crab rangoon was deep fried cream cheese, 0 crab, awful! Yes it is one of the only chinese places that delivers in bloomington, but just go inside once and see how sanitary it is for yourself, disgusting!!! Overpriced for such mediocre food. I dont trust the opinions of teenagers, and clearly bloomington Indiana is the only place that they have ever had chinese, I'm 28, I've had better, but I've NEVER had worse!

i use to order them when I was a frosh in the dorms since they delivered. Food was greasy and they never got my orders correct . I would specify "NO OIL" and it came drenched in oil. I was also on the atkins diet so I would specifiy no CORN STARCH, yet it came drenched in corn starch. But it did satiate my hunger during marathons of being sick of dorm food.

If I were reviewing this establishment based on food alone, I'd give it 3 stars, as the dishes were not particularly tasty. I ordered szechuan chicken and mixed veg w/tofu, and requested that both be extra spicy. Neither dish was spicy, and in fact the sauces for both were quite flavorless. The vegetables were very fresh, however, which is a big plus in my book. But overall this joint gets 4 solid stars because (1) they are the only Chinese restaurant in Bloomington that delivers, (2) they are open (and deliver) until midnight, and (3) the delivery is FAST. I will definitely order from them again when I want delivery but am not in the mood for pizza!

Though the food is greasy, there aren't many options for chinese food in Bloomington. They deliver, but it will still cost you an arm and a leg compared to other places you can get food from. They are open until late except during the summer. I recommend the Jade chicken or orange chicken. Other stuff I tried (most of the chicken dishes) were more so so.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
