This is my favorite taco joint. I hope they open up again soon. because i don't care for the other taco joints in Mundelein. Some of you reviewers are far too prissy! "there was to much cilantro & onions on my tacos" boo hoo! scrape it off and keep it moving! Geez! Lol

Love finding places like this one. Was in town watching a HS baseball game and needed to fine some lunch. This place was just a couple blocks away and decided to give it a try. I would describe the place as family owned business with authentic food with Fresh ingredients. The menu is pretty extensive and plenty of tables to sit. The pictures on yelp give you an accurate view of the place. I only had time to order a couple of chicken tacos which were great. Plenty of toppings and sauces and a fresh wedge of lime which was a nice touch. Definitely a place to visit. Cheers.

Upon walking in, I was a little confused about the setup. You walk up to the register, make your order, pay, and then have a seat and the cashier will bring out your drinks, chips and salsa, etc. I tried out the Chilaquiles Verdes, a Sope with no meat, 2 Tacos de Lengua, and a agua de Jamica. My total was $20. Fairly priced! The tortillas for the tacos were a little tough and hard to swallow and I would have liked for the meat to be sliced more evenly and be more tender. The Sope was okay. No complaints. But the Chilaquiles were a HOMERUN! Very good taste and texture! You could really taste the tomatillo sauce and they definitely had a kick to them! Overall, I am pleased. I'm kind of upset I didn't try their tamales because they're not advertised anywhere on the menu. I thought that was ironic because of the name lol. They also have a small setup with dulces de leche, guayaba, alfafor so that was a plus!

It's disappointing when you go from really liking a place to avoiding it. This past summer, I ordered ahead to pick up dinner. My order included Chicken Tamales and two dinner orders of Chicken Tacos. And, I was pretty psyched to have some Chicken Tacos. I get there 25 minutes later --- only to be told that my order was not ready because....(are you ready for it?)... they were out of chicken. Are you kidding me?? Why did they not tell me when I placed an order or why didn't they call me back? Poor customer service. The young lady who told me about their chicken shortage did not even blink. But there is more..... I just feel their sauces or seasonings have changed. My opinion is that once they opened up Puerto Vallarta in Mundelein, they are focusing their energy more on that restaurant. So, for that reason, the verdict is out on Tamales Diana. I have no desire going there. Now, Rancho Nuevo and Lomelli's in Round Lake are my favorite Mexican restaurants.

Sad Updated Review I feel that I have to update my recent review of this place. I'm a little disappointed that I have to drop them from a 5 star review to a 3 star review but I have legitimate concerns and cause. About a month ago or so I had gone in and placed an order. They completely messed it up. It was a good thing that I checked before I left otherwise we would have been short some of our food. They did make it up with extra tamales so I thought they just had a bad moment. Last week my wife called up to place an order for a couple of chicken taco dinners and a chicken quesadilla. When she arrived they told her that they ran out of chicken. Are you kidding me??? It was about 5:30pm, how can you be out of chicken??? I went with the steak taco and have to say that it was pretty disappointing. Not because I wanted chicken but because the steak was over cooked and small. I'm very disappointed that this happened because I really did like this place before. I think that they may be focusing on their other store but not sure.

The food is amazing. The service could be better. And the atmosphere is less than stellar. But the food is amazing! I love the Carne Asada Burrito Suizo Dinner. The tacos are also good. But it's one of those things where I love the burrito so much, I'm not willing to try other things. There may be something even better that I'm missing out on, but I just can't pass up the burrito to try them. This hole in the wall Mexican joint will please your taste buds an your wallet!

Fresh and delicious with excellent service! Just had dinner there and loved the asada taco, tortilla chips with excellent guac, #5 combo and chile rellenos. We found this place on yelp and are glad we did. Clean, delicious and very friendly service. Yummmmm!

Service isn't the best. But the tamales are amazing and well priced. My favorite Mexican joint in the area.

Today I decided to give this place a try, I noticed it a few weeks ago while doing laundry nearby and I've been wanting to check it out. I do have to say that the little tiny sign they have on the side of the building does not help them any, it's VERY easy to miss. I went in with a friend to check out the place, walked in and we were greeted by... no one. There was a guy at the end of the room watching a rather loud TV, he looked at us but didn't move, didn't say anything, didn't even smile. He wasn't eating anything, so I'm guessing he works there. Didn't hear him call anyone to let anyone know we were there either. We just walked in and sat down in the rather dark dinning room, there was no one there yet, it was 11:15 AM. Someone finally comes to take my order, I ask her for some tamales, she lets me know they are out. I came to this place looking for Tamales because you put Tamales in the name of your Restaurant and I'd expect you to have awesome Tamales, so how can you possibly be out of Tamales on a Tuesday at 11:15 AM?? I decided to go with 1 Chicken Taco, 1 Chorizo Taco and 1 Chicharron Gordita. The lady recommended those because they make the tortilla fresh. The food: The tortillas were indeed home made but I felt like they were a bit under cooked. The chicken tasted pretty good but I did have to take out a ton of cilantro and onion from it because they put just too much in my opinion. The Chorizo was also very good, not too greasy, but once again, way too much cilantro and onions. The Gordita was pretty good, very good size, good amount of Chicharron on there, what I found odd about it is the fact that the Chicharron was actually pretty spicy. I love spicy food but I was just surprised because this is not what I expect to find in a Mexican Restaurant since normally they tone it down quite a bit. The Service: The lady that eventually took care of us was polite enough while taking our order and I believe she was honest when I asked her what's good, however she did take a while to show up when we first came in and never did she come by to see if everything was ok. At the end of the meal she did come by with the check, I gave her my credit card, she went to process it and came back with the receipt, however she kept hovering over me waiting for me to sign the receipt and calculate the tip, just was uncomfortable. Once I put my receipt away I was going to take my last sip of coke but she had already taken it. Final Thoughts: I didn't expect this place to be a 5 star place, but I really was hoping it'd at least be a 4 star place. Walking in and seeing someone right away just sitting there watching TV right away made this a 2 star place for me. The fact that the TV was so loud made it a 1 star place. The food was actually good enough that I wanted to still give it 3 stars, however having the lady not check on us once during our meal combined with her hovering waiting for me to sign the receipt made it go right back down to 2 stars.

Great little place and friendly staff. The tortillas are homemade and the meat is very flavorful. The only reason I gave four stars and not five is they made a small mistake with my order but not a big deal. Will be back soon!

My-oh-myyyy, that was one delicious and spicy chicken tamale! These are not words you hear me say often. It's not that I don't love tamales, cuz believe you me, I do! I think we should use them as currency, and store them at Fort Knox. But I can not recall ever having a chicken tamale that wasn't dry and flavorless. I typically prefer the red with pork, sometimes beef because that's where the flavor and texture is at. However, of the two I tried today, the chicken and the pork, I preferred the chicken. The red was a little bland by comparison only. Surprise, surprise! The guacamole is also not to be missed if you are here. It's incredibly fresh tasting and seems like they use minimal ingredients, and don't over mix it. Its chock full of red onions and chunky, and made to order, which is how it should be in my opinion. Now, this is not the kind of place you should take a first date, or for a special occasion, because it's not much to look at inside, kind of a dive, more so from the outside, but if you are a foodie that enjoys DDD with Guy Fieri, this is the kind of place you might wanna check out. I also tried the al pastor tacos and they were very tasty and not at all skimpy, but it's the tamales that have me intrigued to return and try other items on the menu. If every time is like this visit, I will have found my tamale connection, and maybe a new spot.

Just driving through town. Found this place on yelp. Inside it's pretty simple but the food is good. The employees are very nice and courteous. Their English is not as good. It caused some minor mistakes with our order but not enough to really matter. We are very happy we stopped here. We are stuffed and happy!

Stumbled onto this little place because I was starving. Never dreamed in a million years that the food would be so good! Being a vegetarian, they made me a veggie burrito, which is the most delicious burrito I have ever had. The food is fresh and authentically Mexican. I also ordered a Sopes, which was SOooo good. Will definitely be a regular here. I really like to support our local owner operated restaurants and not the drive-thru chains.

Had this for take out tonight and it wasn't so great. We are new to town and gave the place a try in store. The staff was nice even though they spoke little English and the food was okay. I thought my tacos were good so when we were talking about getting food tonight, I suggested this place. The order took over an hour to get out because the kitchen was so disorganized. The food was just ho hum, nothing spectacular so I'm a little disappointed....

I am Mexican and I really love this little Restaurant!!!!! the food is really authentic, the hand made tortillas are awesome, and the price it's very reasonable, better than all the restaurants around the area.

Went here on a Sunday afternoon expecting some standard and quick Mexican cuisine. What did we receive? Standard and quick Mexican cuisine, that's what. This restaurant isn't easy on the eyes, but they quickly divert when fresh guacamole is brought to the table. I ordered the carne asada torta and was pleased. I wasn't overflowing with joy, but very pleased. It was spiced well and was a generous portion. Like I said, I knew what I was coming for. I did, however, find the service to be disappointing on our visit. We were never given silverware or water as a standard. In fact, the silverware never came. They were inundated with takeout orders, and I don't think I ever saw the cook look up from or move away from his designated area. Many people seemed behind on orders when we walked in because of the takeout pace. For that reason, I'll give the poor service a nod. If you are looking standard, authentic Mexican food that doesn't break the bank, I recommend this place. Please, just know what you're coming for. You won't be let down.

Yum yum! I know if I need to get a good Mexican fix, I can literally walk around the corner to this little joint! Last time I came, they were in the middle of an expansion; great to see a locale spot expanding their walls! Their 'guac' is really tasty, I tend to order this every time I come. Nothing too complicated, but you know, sometimes the simplest of recipes are the best ones! So I usually go for this, and some good ol' taco's with cilantro and onions. I usually go for the steak and the chorizo ones (I have an undying love for chorizo!). They always remember to hand over some slices of lime for me to squeeze on top. YUM! I did try the pork skin taco once; it is pretty interesting! Did not expect it to be spicy though, but don't get me wrong, I LOVE spicy food! I usually get my food to go so I can't speak about dine-in service. But I can say that their take-out service is pretty on the ball; I haven't had to wait too long for my order since I've started ordering from here! All in all, very decent food. Not the absolute BEST, but it definitely satisfies my Mexican cravings.

This is a great take out place for mexican. The steak tacos (with cilantro and onion) and pork tamales are some of the best I have ever had. Decent burritos as well and can't beat the price.

Considering I eat here nearly twice a week, I figured I should update my previous review, and give it the full five stars. Their pork is epic, whether it be in a taco, burrito, sope, or gordita (and yes, I've tried them all, because I'm a slob like that). To prove how amazing it is, I'll share this interesting fact... I've never seen another white person there. Talk about authentic! Tamales Diana, if you were a woman, I'd marry you.

I am a connoisseur of Mexican food, Burrito's are my kryptonite, I grew up in Chicago and have eaten at hundreds if not a thousand Mexican restaurants. Tamales Diana is one really good joint to eat at. If you're looking for good Mexican food you'll find it here. If you're looking for "Americanized" Mexican food, you won't find it here. I often pass on the burrito's here because the gorditas are so good, I've tried all the different meats & they're all fabulous. Everything here is homemade, even the tortillas. Prices are VERY reasonable.

I'm torn on writing this review... but here goes. Moved back to town and was ready to find some Mexican food gems, checked Yelp and off I went to Tamales Diana. First meal was excellent, 5 stars! Homemade tortillas were awesome, chicken tacos had shredded chicken (no gross fatty pieces) and were juicy, hot sauce was fiery, Bistec tasty. Very authentic, priced right, and tasted so good! Everything seems great right? Wrong. Went back again a few days later for the same meals. Things took a turn for the worse. I had to wait a few minutes for my food to be ready for pickup so I sat down at a booth. It hadn't been wiped down and there were crumbs everywhere and all of a sudden I spot a huge cockroach walking around on the table, picking at crumbs, walking near me, walking all over the place for the entire time I waited. I almost lost it...I can't stand cockroaches! To me, it is a pure sign of uncleanliness. This one was big and not afraid of people, I can only imagine how many more there are in the kitchen and other food prep areas. I still waited for my food however, even though I knew it was going to be hard to eat. However, I more closely examined the cleanliness of the place and it seemed like it needs to be maintained much better. Yes, it's a dive. Yes, it's a hole in the wall. I don't care but it better be clean and I don't want to see bugs. Brought the food home. My tacos were still good, chips were fine, but the same Bistec we had before was awful! Nearly every piece of steak was full of fat, and not normal fat but weird looking fat that consumed the meat so badly it looked like a bunch of octopus tentacles! It was almost inedible as it was seriously 95% fat/5% steak. I've never seen steak that looked like that, it was very, very disgusting. So Tamales Diana, although I am still craving your tortillas and tacos and want to go back, I just don't know if I can do it yet.. please clean up your act.

Only possible complaint is decor. Food is great, especially the verde tamales (green chile chicken). Service is quick and prices are very good.

My wife and I have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant and I was excited after reading the the other reviews. The food was not at all what we had expected. Small portions, dried out and bland. The salsa had no spice or flavor so I ordered guacamole to go with the chips. Mistake! It was mostly onions with a little avocado mixed in. I would pass!

This is a very small hole in the wall in a nondescript strip mall. I almost found this place by accident. I got takeout here although there are several booths to dine in. The guacamole here is a solid good, the tacos really good. The tostada was good, as was the enchilada. The real star of the show was the tamale, excellent.

This place is soo *eats chip and guacamole* YUM. Very small family owned (I believe or so their menu says) mexican place. THEY EVEN HAVE MEXICAN SODA CALL JARRITOS o_o....and coke in the glass bottle, so awesome. I found this place on my way to work and thought I would stop in because I believe any small strip mall that has a mexican place is golden...ok not really. The food is great. I haven't experienced the whole menu yet because I get the same thing everytime but its quite varied. Everytime I go there I get the COMBO #3 ($6.75) which comes with a Taco, Sope, and Quesadilla, served with rice and beans. Oh also before I go on I want to mention that you are provided with a free basket of what I believe is homemade chips and salsa (see pictures for chips and salsa). MEAL BREAKDOWN The Taco (choice of meats - Avocado [not a meat HA], ground beef skirt steak, chorizo, Al Pastor [ pork in red sauce], chicken, beef tounge. FOR EXTRA PRICE - beef tripe, ribeye steak, pork skin, dried beef): The taco come with a meat of your choice and with cilantro and onions or lettuce, tomato, and onions. My second favorite part of the plate second to the Sope. Comes with fresh, soft, well heated, taco tortillas (the kind that are the good authentic ones that are double layered on themselves) filled liberally with the meat (skirt steak for me) and sprinkled with onions and cilantro, my favorite tacos anywhere, period. The Sope (Choice of toppings - Poblano pepper slices with cheese, Nopales (mexican cactus), skirt steak, chorizo, Al pastor, pork skin, chicken): my favorite part of the plate, nice soft, chewy dough formed and grilled to order. Decent size (about the circumference of a small tortilla) piled high with beans, the meat, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. Quesadilla (can be filled with any meat, I believe): the quesadilla is a good size but its just average and can be a little greasy because of the melted cheese and its cut in have and each half is on top of the other when the plate comes out (very full plate) so that doesnt help. Not super greasy though still pretty decent. I like skirt steak in mine. You can also bring home a bag of chips and salsa and/or chips and guacamole (2.00 and 3.50 respectively) the salsa is liquidly (the way i like it) but has little bits of cilantro and onion in it this is the red salsa, quite spicy. The green i'm not a big fan of not much heat at all salsa verde type thing but with some mashed up/blend up avocado I believe, (it has the pale ish color that isnt with regular salsa verde). The guacamole is very fresh (they make it when you order it and has small chunks of tomato) you can taste everything in it, the avocado, lime, tomato, could use a little garlic (or more if there is any in there) though. Overall a very affordable place with fresh food and lots of it for a very reasonable price. Its also nice to see other mexicans eating there also. ENJOY :).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
