My favorite dish here is tofu with black mushrooms and Chinese broccoli, it's just perfect! I've not tried anything else on the menu, well egg rolls (good!) and a vegetable soup. Old school 1970's dining room, a brand new bar. Very sweet owners who remember names and go out of their way to be hospitable. This is old school Chinese American dining without the MSG and with plenty of fresh vegetables. Wish them well, they have been around close to 40 years and for a reason :)

Great Eggrolls! We also had the sweet and sour chicken which was wonderful as well. The customer service is unbeatable. Very genuine and welcoming staff! We love this place.

We have been going here pretty much since they opened, 25-30 years. The food and service are always good. I like the appetizer platter, and their egg rolls are home made - not those frozen ones purchased from a food service company as many seem to do nowadays. i doubt you can go wrong with anything on the menu, but the main things we get are sweet and sour chicken, BBQ pork fried rice, and kung pao beef. I would definitely recommend it.

I usually do not write a review until today. To make a long story short: Service is horrible. Food horrible. Egg roll was decent. I would never ever go there again.

Love the egg rolls . They'll do special orders if you let them know in advance for the weekends . Really accommodating

My friend and I were feeling lazy and didn't want to drive far so we settled on Royal Cantonese Restaurant due to its proximity to his house. We ordered the Emperor's Chicken and the Hot and Sour Soup. We were a bit disappointed. It was very Americanized bland flavor. There was no spice at all! We both agreed that we would rather take the extra time to go to Silk Mandarin on 60 next time we are craving Chinese food. The website has coupons you can print out... including a carry out special for 15% off which we put to good use!

  • Rob S.

Ordered carry out from here and was not disappointed. Egg rolls were good but slightly overdone. Pork ribs appetizer was good with a good sauce. The Mongolian beef was different than any I have ever had with large pieces of meat rather than thin shreds of meat- unique and I did enjoy it. Sweet and sour chicken was standard. I would agree with another review that the food is a touch on the pricier side than other similar restaurants.

Please note my review is for the terrible experience we had a couple of years ago. We will NEVER be back. We went there to dine in, but waited for our food for over an hour. So we decided to leave as we were with the child who couldn't wait anymore. They quickly packed our food to go and were very apologetic about the situation. We had a shrimp dish and roasted duck with pineapples. The food tasted okay. But we got terribly sick at night. We had a terrible food poisoning. Next day I had to take a day off as I was way too sick to go to work. Never again!!!

Went last night with a friend. The serivce was good, the food was ok, the prices were a bit high. The lady at the front door was overly happy and talkative. Not sure if I will go back. Not many good Chinese places around here.

  • Betty Z.

Very disappointed with this restaurant. Food was not good at all. Though the egg rolls weren't bad. Previous reviews prompted me to try Royal Cantonese instead of our usual. Price was pretty darn high too. We will be sticking with Golden Kitchen.

Pretty good - not great, I would say. It's more of a funny experience than anything because of the atmosphere. It feels like Old Country Buffet inside. The food here is pretty good. It's not the best in the area (try Golden Kitchen or Hong Kong Chop Suey, both in Mundelein) but it's still pretty good. The service can be ungodly slow, so don't go if you're in a hurry. We've usually had fairly slow service, but that might not be everyone's experience. I always laughed at how they advertised Mai Tai's out front, because it's a Chinese restaurant and that just doesn't seem like it would be their specialty. But the Mai Tais really are amazing!

Was there tonite for a super bowl party they had. It was a lot of fun and the buffet special was good. This is the second year they had it and it's better this year. I'll be back for it next year. So if you have no plans next year for the super bowl, I would try it out.

Food was only OK. Service had much to be desired. No napkins on table. We asked, and then the waitress gave for only my wife and I, none for the kids. My son finally got from the next table. When we asked for water, all the cups were not filled, even though my son had put a couple cups next to each other since they were so slow to come to the table and replenish. It was a real problem getting refills. I asked for extra wraps for the moshu pork, and had to ask several times before I finally got them. I don't think the waitress was intentionally trying to be bad, she is just inattentive.

It's rare to walk in to a restaurant and be greeted by name but that's what happens at the Royal Cantonese. We've had a number of things on the menu over the years, and so far we haven't been disappointed. The portions are generous and you can't beat the personalized service. We like the local atmosphere too.

Who knew old school, Chinese restaurant goodness was hanging out in old Mundelein. "Old school" like those restaurants of the 1980's Chinese joints, with dragon stenciling on their front windows and dining room ware reminding you of the furniture your parents once had decades back. Except here their furniture is in fine condition like it rolled off a truck yesterday and since Ma has been wiping them down. We overheard from another table that this restaurant has been in business some thirty plus years or so, dating back to the 1970's! What a feat, to stand the test of time and make it this far. Of course like most days I was on Google looking for someplace new I have not yet been and came across random Google reviews for this spot. Seemed to have a good presence amongst local folk and repeat family business for many years so naturally I ventured out this way. Day 1, had the chicken with hot garlic sauce lunch special which was accompanied by hot and sour soup and a home made egg roll. Excellent food. Food service arrived in stages and was served piping hot. Day 2, wanted something different, had heard that they make some dishes not mentioned on the menu. So I went with the General Tso's chicken. MAN!. Not awesome, tasted like sweet and sour chicken with white meat, breast pieces. Service was on point and always around. Very easy to talk to and knew the menu well. The restaurant manager was there as well to greet as you enter. A detail my coworker pointed out was how easy it was to converse with her. Definitely Chinese, but Midwestern American with her dialect. When we walked in, she was easy going and personable, immediately making small talk that you could identify with. Out here in the sticks of Mundelein, I'm sure that is a detail their locals would enjoy. As far as value, it's a great deal for the price. For roughly $7.15 plus, you get an entrée, choice of soup and egg roll. Their egg rolls are pretty good, not the best I've ever had, but it's a treat to get something freshly made rather than bulk purchased. (A practice some smaller Chinese restaurants may do, is bulk buy egg rolls from a distributor) Good stuff, I look forward to dining with them again.

i love love love this place! best chinese food ever with affordable prices! my top ten: mai tai crab rangoon egg roll hot and sour soup potstickers singapore noodles kung pao chicken beef and green onion fried green leaves emerald's chicken honestly, sitting here thinking about my favorites makes me realize i have never had a bad item there, and i wish they were open mondays!! but the best part is the friendly attitude of the owners john and dorien, they make this place really stand out! it seems she knows everyone, always greeting people by name and there's always a lively group of regulars at their small but cozy bar area.

My parents have been going here since they opened. I grew up on the eggrolls here and cant eat them anywhere else. They will make just about anything you want. I got the same two things for most of my life. The lemon chicken and the orange chicken. I had no idea what I was missing out on. They have great lunch specials for when I dont feel like cooking. I just buy them and stick them in the fridge for later. I still get take out here once a week. Portion size is huge. They have the best Mai Tai i have ever had.

Had a great lunch experience there. I was a big fan of their giant egg rolls. Service was very fast, chicken lo mein noodles tasted great, and staff was overly friendly. Overall, it was a nice restaurant type dinner, for mom and pop take out prices.

Food is good, personnel are very friendly and welcoming. Heard from friends that their mai tai's are even better than Bob Chinn's.

I live very close to this restaurant and carry out a few times a year. Every time I order from here I am disappointed. The food is very overpriced. The egg roll is good but the main courses are not. Chicken with broccoli comes with carrots and almonds and not much chicken. I promise myself each time that I will not order from there again - it is worth driving 10 minutes out of my way to visit China Court in Mundelein.

Read the short version of reviews on my iPhone and decided to go try the egg rolls. Mistake. At best the food was very mediocre. More realistically it just wasn't good. I had kung pao chicken, wife had bbq pork, my son ordered Shimp Kow, and my daughter had a bowl of chicken and rice soup. The egg rolls weren't "that" good. The rest of the food just wasn't good. My dinner was a little on the cold side ?? - how do you do that with Chinese food. And nothing was that flavorful. The worst outcome was that my son announced that his stomach hurt on the way home, and then got sick as we walked in the house. Sorry, but don't waste the time/energy on this place.

I am a regular customer to this restaurant and the food is excellent at reasonable prices. The owners are really friendly and make us feel welcome every time we are there. I have also had many business meetings - which is really convenient with their high speed wi-fi.

This is by far the best Chinese restaurant ever. The egg rolls are amazing. Some of my family's favorites: pork fried rice, cantanese beef lo mien, hong kong steak, cashew chicken and just to many more to name. I moved an hour away when to go to college and my roommate and I would go and get carry out from here we love it so much. Now my kids are addicted to it, and want to go there when ever we visit grandmas.

Oh, dilemma! What to rate this place? My panties are still wet from the mouthgasm I achieved earlier this evening, however the memory of waiting 45 minutes to get my tea is quickly leaving me frigid and dry as dust. If you're going to run a restaurant and you're going to be open on Christmas Eve, then damn it, hire enough staff to serve your clientele! My husband arrived at 6:45, waited 20 minutes to be seated, although there were plenty of empty tables visible from the teensy bar. My daughter and I arrived at 7:10, we sat for 20 minutes or more till someone came to take our drink order. 10-15 minutes after that, dinner order was taken. Drinks arrived @ 8:00. Yes, there was water but this is Lake County...who is stupid enough to drink well water? Our meals finally graced our table around 8:25. Please don't ask how long we waited for our bill, and then to pay it. I left the restaurant at 9:35. Finally. More than 2 hours later. For a dinner for three. No appetizers. No schmoozing, no imbibing. For food quality and quantity, 5 stars. For the non-esxistent service due to the holiday and poor planning, 1 star. I'll give them a second chance but next time it'll either be for carry-out or a non-holiday outing.

I've passed by this place a ton and have been wanting to try it for a long while. Opportunity arose to give it a shot so I stopped by and got some carry out. Having looked online at the menu, I saw what I assumed to be a more gourmet approach to traditional Chinese food. Some beef items made from fillet and some less common seafood dishes, like steamed clams, had me excited. I ordered the shrimp lobster style, and thought it was good but a tad bland. The fried shrimp were as good as I've ever had, but nothing too impressive. The beef with spinach was a solid good, but not as unique as I would have hoped. Having never seen this item before at any Chinese place, I guess I hoped for more. The beef fried rice was very good, but again not anything I haven't had before. I guess my main gripe was the price, it was almost in the range of PF Changs for what I would describe as ordinary food. The food wasn't bad, just very common, and what I can find as good for less money. To sum up, if this place was in my neighborhood, I wouldn't be opposed to order from here more often. As a place that I have to travel more than 20 minutes to though, I don't see driving there ever.

This joint has outstanding food, and an incredibly friendly atmosphere. I have been going there a few times a month for 20+ years. It is family run, and they do get overwhelmed when large crowds show up, but I don't think you can get better Chinese food in the northern suburbs. I recommend having a drink and dinner at the bar if there is room.

I agree with joanne y. This place has the best egg rolls. All of their food is so good. For the sweet and sour dishes they add marachino cherries (nice touch!) along with pineapple, tomatoes, green peppers.... We've had work Christmas parties here and the food and drinks are always awesome and we had the best times.

they have the best egg rolls in the suburbs! i'm going to have to make a trip out there just for them. i used to come here with my parents when i was living with them in the big VH (vernon hills). we would all order the same thing. my dad would order the duck, my mom the moo shu pork, my sister the lo mein noodles and i forget what i would order but i'm sure i had an order of egg rolls. anyways, this family owned and operated restaurant has been in business for what seems like forever and it's for a good reason...the food and service is amazing. this draws many to become regulars. who doesn't like going to a chinese restaurant where they all know your name? i haven't been there for many years now but i bet you an order of egg rolls they will remember me and my name while i forgot theirs. i'll just have to avoid any convos where i would have to use their name. for shame!

It has taken way too long to write this review. John and Doreen know the restaurant business and they KNOW their customers! They try to personally talk to all of their customers. Their food is great and the Mai Tais are the best. If you want or need to alter a dish, all you have to do is ask. If you sit at the bar, chances are by the time you leave you will know everyone. The Hunan fried rice is amazing and I highly recommend it!

Well, I could have swore Google review for this place was better, that's why I decided to go...It had 4.5 stars. Wow the food here is really bad, I had muuuch better beef chow fun out in the middle of nowhere than this place. Then ordered a wonton noodle and that was sooo soo bland. So very disappointed, very much wanted to like this place because everyone who works here are very nice. But nope, will not come back for the food. Also the food seems a bit overpriced, the chow fun was $12...very greasy, almost got heartburn. The only reason this place is not 1 star is because the management is pretty great.

Great food! Amazing customer service - both on the phone and in person. The chicken fried rice is one of the best I have had in a while. Had seconds!

water is AWFUL! I have a well at home - I like well water, good well water, this is disgusting well water - outrageous they a restaurant with that kind of water would not o not have a filtration system... or serve (gasp) bottled water. after we got our cans of soda (TOTALLY worth the $1.50) the egg drop soup was good - however I would have skipped it if i knew about the water when ordering, but it was cook and flavorful, so you couldn't taste the nastyness. had the beef & something chow fun, beef was good, but otherwise kinda bland, not enough variety of vegetables. staff was supper nice!!! could it be the water? overall = meh.

I've been a customer of Royal Cantonese for years. I'm finally writing a review because the competition for dining is overwhelming and I would hate for this place to be forgotten. The owners, John and Doreen, are involved in every aspect (reservations, recommendations, cleaning and probably even food preparation) and that shows in the end result. The quality and flavors are AMAZING plus the drink menu is outstanding! Friendly service and a comfortable environment are other positives. If you're craving THE BEST Asian cuisine in Chicagoland... do NOT miss out on this establishment! A + + + +

Very friendly, efficient service. The meat was very well-cooked and soups were very good. My main complaint: both of us ordered spicy dishes but the food wasn't spicy at all. I thought perhaps I had ordered the wrong thing and forgotten! Order something crunchy/fried - I was amazed how well the fried dishes came out, although stir-fried dishes were also good.

Nothing good to report in our trip here. The egg rolls were over cooked and full of peanuts, the potsticker sauce was pure vinegar, the soup tasted like something had died in it and to top it off we had too wait over an hour to get our entrees. Don't waste your time or money on this dump!!

Care to answer the phone so I can order? Guess they're too busy to take an order from a would-be customer..

Phoned in an order tonight, and was exceptionally taken by the friendly voice on the other end of the line. She knew I was a first time customer, and explained to me what went into each dish, how it was prepared, and overall super-nice to speak with. Ready as promised in 25mins, I got there early, and was offered a glass of water or hot tea while I waited. (A+ in my book to offer that!) Food was hot when I got home. Egg Rolls were good, homemade. Meat/Proteins aplenty in the dishes. FINALLY found fried rice out here *(new to the area) that was made with SHORT GRAIN RICE. Loved it. I really liked this place for carry out. Will order from there again, no doubt.

The customer service here is phenomenal. I ordered over the phone and the woman that was there to ring me up addressed be my first name once I arrived. They gave me a realistic time on when the food would be ready and it was to the minute. Try the egg rolls and the crab rangoon. I've eaten here twice and I haven't eaten something that wasn't tasty and fresh.

The food is good here but they are one of the most expensive. If you dont mind paying a little more it is worth a try.

Amazing egg rolls. Slightly above average entrees. So far I've only had the lunch special of general tso's and sweet and sour chicken. Seriously lacking in meat portion for the lunch special Mongolian beef (non filet mignon version). Best Chinese food in the area in my opinion. It's worth a go just for the egg rolls alone.

Me and my boyfriend came here and it was great! We got the special where two eat for 20 dollars and it comes with soup, an appetizer, fried rice, and entree. I got the hot and sour soup which was great. He got the egg drop which I tried and was better than most I've had. We also had crab Rangoon, shrimp fried rice and king pao chicken, all excellent. The staff was very friendly and we got our food very quick. Would definitely come here again.

My family and I have been coming here for 20+ years. This is hands down my favorite place to order take out. The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. I have since moved away and always make a point to order when I am back in town.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
