Chips and 2 salsas while you wait rock it. The tomato salsa looks like soup but knocks your socks off in flavor and highly addictive. I check in here more than any place out and can't go wrong for some classic tasting Mexican food - bravo!

I've been going to Grande Jake's for years and years... food is always great, and the staff has always been nice.

I really like this place. Whenever I get Mexican food I feel like everything is way too spicy and this place isn't. They have really good guacamole, nachos, burritos, and tacos. I haven't tried anything else on the menu yet. It's one of my family's go to places when we want to do take out. Give this place a try.

Good mexican food for this area. I think a tad overpriced for a few items since its not a true sit down restaurant. The guacamole is good which can be a crap shoot at places. The inside of the place needs some work done.

Grande Jakes offers below average Mexican food at a above average price. The salsa that they serve is quite good and spicy, provided you try the hot salsa rather than the mild but both are homemade and the chips are also fried on the site and we usually go through 3-4 baskets of them. The rest of the menu is pretty much standard Mexican fare with the standard American take and influenced by the southwest. It typically is not authentic but still not bad and chorizo is about as unusual as they get, which is pretty lame. Prices are above average, especially for what you can get in the Waukegan area. Uhm, it is better than the Taco Bell across the street.

Food is fine. Good choice for take-out--if you order a cerveza while you wait, they'll bring you chips and salsa. NOT fun to dine in. No real service.

My first time ever coming here, I noticed the decor is very laid back and home-styled. Nothing fancy so it's a good place to go to hang out with a friend or two and talk. I heard very good things about this place but never had the opportunity to try it. When I did, I was far less than impressed. I got a grilled steak Burrito Mas Grande and was disappointed greatly. For a $7 meal, I expected more steak, beans and all of that great stuff and not so much lettuce. If I were to calculate it, I would say about 80-85% of the burrito was nothing but lettuce. The rest was fried beans and there was a very skimpy amount of steak. For the price, they could have at least gave me a little more beans and steak. Don't get me wrong, quality is fairly good and one other good thing? Free chips! :) Service was nice but the lady at the front didn't seem to know how to work the POS system and kept swearing at it. She was friendly though and tended to every one of our needs. Would I come here again? No. Simple as that. For $7, I would rather go somewhere else nearby. I'm no advertiser so I am not going to say where but I certainly would not consider Grande Jake's when looking for somewhere to eat. Now, with that being said, would I recommend this place? Perhaps. You may enjoy it more than I did because I understand not everyone is the same and what one person may not like, another person may.

I went here to enjoy lunch with my sister. The people here were very kind and friendly to us! We were planning to do take out, and they offered chips and salsa to us at no charge. Maybe that is what they do anyways, but we decided to stay as a show of our appreciation for the service. I went after reading one review that mentioned how the salsa was like spiced ketchup. I have to admit that it was true, but they have a salsa bar with lots of other salsas that were delicious! The ground beef looks a little sad, but the food was still pretty good. I would come back again!

Really good food here. I am a little disappointed that they stopped having standard Pico de Gallo (without mango) on their salsa bar, when I asked for some extra for my tacos they charged me a few dollars for a tiny cup of it. We went on a Sunday and they didn't bring us any chips & salsa like they have been doing for years and we had to ask for that too. Not sure what's going on with this location. Otherwise the food is great!

Well we tried them one more time - after 3.5 minute hold, placed order and referenced situation that occurred previously and had them reread the order. My teenager picked up the order...once again, we were missing an item. And no mas for us...3 Amigos all the way.

Authentic mexican food but I've seen better. Eat at your own risk though as the sanitary conditions here would not pass a pop inspection. The toilet had had to be flushed with a shoestring, the bathroom was absolutely filthy, the waitress handled food with dirty hands and they were out of about half of their menu items. Not worth a trip to the emergency room for food poisoning.

Went there for the first time not too long ago Have been back twice since then. I was really surprised by how much I liked the food. Even have ordered take out and it was just as good! The salsa is amazing. I really like the warm salsa they serve. Have a great food selection. Lot of food for the money! The margaritas are great! The service is good, everyone was friendly and helpful.

I've been here a lot since moving to the area and this is just an all around good food AND good service (good service at a Mexican restaurant you say - Yes!). They are friendly and willing to accommodate requests. They have a HUGE menu that even has hotdogs, sausages and, I think, burgers. They have a salsa bar with about 6 salsas - all good. On rare occasions the center of my burrito may be cold or the beans a little dry but they are quick to swap it out for me anytime this occurs. This is definitely the best Mexican food around here and just having moved here from Phoenix I know what I'm talking about.

Despite the menu looking semi-promising, the execution is horrible - even the taste is missing. Top it off with lack of service, makes for a very underwhelming experience :(

Chips and salsa are good, but food is okay. The meat doesn't have a whole lot of flavor, but it's always busy... So maybe I'll give it a try again...

Tried this place last night and it was good. If you are looking for authentic mexican food, this is a good place to go. The grande burrito is the size of a football. The menu variety is amazing and interesting. They were quite busy as well but there was hardly a wait for our meals. I would eat here again.

There's two way of looking at this place; you can either try to review it based on quality, taste, and atmosphere based on all the restaurants you have seen or want to see or you can reviewed based on its category. Grande Jake's is by no means extravagant, exquisite, and contemporary. It can't fare well in that category. But it does have its niche in the fact that it's fast, tasty, and not overly-priced Mexican food. Don't come here for fine-dining Mexican... this is more for your quick and dirty tamales fix. Oh yeah and if you have the margarita on the rocks you might want to bring your favorite designated driver... wow they loaded it (but that's good, I got my money's worth)

Have always been a fan of this Mexican restaurant. Order at the counter, have a seat and get chips and salsa. Hubby and I have ordered almost everything off the menu and we've enjoyed all of it. Even when the place is packed, the food comes out in a timely manner. Only thing I miss is their outdoor seating, we used to bring the dog to sit out and enjoy a lovely meal.

We used to like this place a lot but we have been there about three times this year and every single time our food is just ok. So we do not go there anymore. If you are looking for good mexican this is not your place!

TAMALES AND MOLE TAMALES AND MOLE TAMALES AND MOLE TAMALES This place is awesome! Thanks, Yelpers! Having lived in Arizona for over ten years, my hubby and I are always looking for good Mexican. This dive hits the mark. I've only been there once so far, a couple of weeks ago, but I am definitely going back! PORK TAMALES: delish, flavorful, moist and proportioned correctly. Even the masa was bursting with flavor. They aren't the most attractive looking tamales, but who cares- they rock! MOLE SAUCE: put it on a tire and you will still eat the tire. ;) This mole sauce was spicy and full of flavor. We ordered it on a breast of grilled chicken that was surprisingly juicy- cooked just right. RICE HORCHATA: delish, refreshing and the perfect sweet complement to the spicy/savory mole. :) ENCHILADAS: we tried three different ones and only the chorizo was not that great, but we also got mole in the enchiladas, so maybe it was competing too much flavor-wise. I believe the other two were pork or beef, and chicken, but they were quite yummy. RICE and BEANS: meh, they were ok. SALSA BAR: as everyone said, great! INTERIOR: no points here, really, as it is a local dive, but it was very clean, and had lots of tables available. STAFF: friendly and patient (for this first timer) This totally satisfied our Mexican craving, and we are kinda picky when it comes to Mexican cuz we've had the best, from family and restaurants. We will keep going back if only to make sure it stays open. It's our new tamale connection.

Really good Mexican food. If you eat there you get chips and salsa at your table while you wait. And for fast food, you even have someone that brings you your food when it is ready. It is made to order, so it take a bit longer, but well worth it. Great carry out and the staff is really nice and very helpful if you have any questions on the menu or items. They also have burgers and such, too.

If you appreciate no-frill, straightforward, made-to-order, authentic, very affordable, delicious Mexican food, make a point to note Grande Jake's ("GJ's") as your next 'must visit' Lake County IL dining destination. Though GJ's is a quasi-divey (though impeccably clean) come-as-you-are place, it's a stand-alone as far as food quality. In addition to great food, you will also quickly observe that GJ's counter and table tending staff are remarkably helpful, friendly and polite. I honestly could not identify anything that I have not enjoyed anytime that we have visited GJ's (and that 'says' something as many times as we've dined there and carried out over the years).

Not worth it. watched people handle money then turn around and handle my food with their bare hands.. I canceled my order immediately and just walk out. I can only imagine what happens in the back! Eat at your on risk. Nasty.

This was our first time ordering from Grande Jake's. We heard great things and it is super close so tonight we decided to give it a shot. We have a big household so we had a big order. Maybe I should have gone inside and ordered instead of over the phone. The entire time the lady on the phone was telling other people she will be right with them, making me feel like an inconvenience. Maybe more people should be working the phones or carryout. We ordered multiple orders of chips and cheese, also cheddar fries...we got every order with barely any cheese. There was no point in indicating cheese on the menu if you are only going to put droplets of cheese on the orders. We ordered add-on shrimp to a "veggie" salad, which consisted of three slices of green pepper, tomatoes and lettuce, VOILA! you got yourself a veggie salad. Never received shrimp which we paid extra for. Never received salsa that was also asked if we wanted for the salad. It was overly priced for the quality of food. We will never be ordering from here again. We don't know what we were thinking when we wanted to do Mexican and didn't order from Tacos El Norte. Big Mistake!!! Over all just a very bad experience!

Great, fast service for lunch. Asked for a burrito without the wheat flour wrapper with corn tortillas on the side since I have gluten intolerance. They did so with no extra charge and plated my burrito like a big salad. Also lightly toasted the tortillas, delicious. Generous salsa bar and fresh chips when dining in. Grab some coupons off of their website.

The service is good and quick, which is nice for a lunch time meal or if time is somewhat pressing. However, for my initial visit I found the food mediocre and nothing overly special. I did like the different salsa's which they had out and you could help yourself to. I didn't have to wait long for the food to come out and it was presented well. The rice was okay and I did find the beans very tasteful. The beans did have a slightly different texture and taste from what I'm accustomed to, but in a good way. For my first visit, I ordered the chicken taco's and here is where I was disappointed. The check was dry and lacked flavor, which took the appeal away from the other items making up the taco. According to other fellow Yelpers, this place is suppose to be really good, so I'll recognized this was only my first time here. So, I do plan on going back several more times to see if other visits can persuade me to improve my two star rating.

LOVE this place. We eat here regularly, maybe 6 times a month for the fish tacos. Food is delicious, margaritas strong, and it's busier every time we go. I guess the word is out!

Free chips and salsa. Awesome salsa bar with tons of authentic choices. Everything is cooked fresh and is awesome. Burrito's, Chimichaungas, taco's, tamales are really some of the best. Friendly service from Jake and his staff. They sure like the garlic so beware if it's your first date. They've recently added fish taco's, carnitas, mole's, which are all great. Quality not lost with new additions. Drinks are a bit pricey but you get tons of food for you money here and you won't leave hungry. I'd love to see them open for breakfast they'd offer one mean breakfast burrito if they did.

I really like this dive. Chips and salsa are served free with any order. Service is pleasant and professional. I had a steak torta here and thought it really hit the spot. Prices seemed reasonable to me. There's really no excuse to go to the Taco Bell across the street when Grande Jake's is right there.

Very fast and friendly. If you're placing a take-out order and it's not ready when you get there, mountains of free nachos while you wait. Huge menu, and they're willing to pretty much make you anything you want even if it's not listed. Large salsa bar.

Finally we found decent/good mexican food in Lake County! Being from So. Calif. we are used to really good Mex. food so it's been tough since we moved out here. A friend who's family lives in Mexico, told us that Grande Jakes was good and we agree. Not anything fancy and wish they had real margaritas to go along with it, but at least they have Pacifico's. We'll be back!

Grande Jakes is a great little place for a fantastic margarita and some simple, well priced mexican food. They have some great combination platters, and the chips and salsa bar are a treat. Not sure what the other reviewer was expecting, this is an order at the counter restraunt and they serve it at your table. We just love it, the food is always hot and the service is friendly, and the place is very clean. We eat here with friends at least once a week.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
