Ive only had good experiences at dozika so i was surprised to see their avg rating was below 4. Their lunch specials are very good and great value too. Favorite thai restaurant in evanston. I actually live much closer to paragon siam but almost any day id prefer dozika. Their pad thai, miso and crab rangoon are terrific as well as some of the japanese apps. Will continue to dine in and carry out here.

I really love their happy hour which is on Sunday - Thursdays 3:30-5:30pm. There's a great selection of rolls and nigiri that are 1/2 off. This happy hour makes it the best deal in Evanston! I sometimes push my lunch hour til this time so I can enjoy a delicious meal for a great price. Their rolls are not packed with rice but are a perfect combination of rice and fish. Their nigiri is also a great portion. I am absolutely in love with the unagi which is only $1.25 during happy hour. Other nigiri like hamachi and smoked salmon are also $1.25 and that's the most expensive nigiri they have. Others like mackeral and salmon are $1.00. Their veggie rolls are as low as $2.25/2.50 and a salmon advocado or spicy salmon roll will only put you back by $2.75. Name me another sushi place that offers this kind of deal and I'll be your best friend! Til then, take my advice to come here to enjoy their sushi and I'm sure you won't regret.

While the logo may suggest this is a noodle shop, I would describe it more as a sushi restaurant that also serves pan-Asian food. There are a number of interesting bento boxes available for lunch, and I like the fact that you can essentially pick your own sushi, sashimi and roll as part of one of them. The sushi was perfectly acceptable, better than a market but not gourmet. Certainly for the price it was good. The miso soup was excellent. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is casual but nice enough.

Good sushi. Had the dinner buffet. You need to select from a menu they give with some restrictions on categories. You need to finish what they serve to get more. Reasonable I would say. Costed around 26 bucks per person including tax. Well worth it if you can eat a lot.

Meh. 3 stars is a perfect rating. Food was ok, nothing remarkable and atmosphere is super casual, family friendly ( maybe too family friendly as an employee?? was working at a table on the side, while eating, while her child played on the floor with toys) and just nothing special. Sushi was edible but certainly not the freshest and portions of fish were small. The miso veggie soup was begging for flavor and the chow fun was pretty much untouched by my kids although I didn't mind it. They did love the tamago however, and gobbled up a few pieces each. Service was friendly and fast although we dined at the senior hour of 5:30. Great for young kids but prob not where you want to go for date night.

Had dinner with a friend to use our groupon! The Tonkatsu ramen was surprisingly delicious (or maybe I wasn't expecting much at all? Authentic Japanese ramen is challenging to find...) While the broth was subpar, we were served generous portions of ramen ingredients like egg, fish cake, and bamboo shoots. The chashu pork was one of the best I've had in Chicago - exceptionally tender and flavorful. For ten bucks a bowl, the ramen isn't bad at all. The lack of finesse in the broth is what keeps this at three stars. Also tried the gyoza - a tad too greasy for my taste. Besides that, the menu looked pretty comprehensive. Might come back for the ramen.

*This review is about the service and NOT the food. I had the sushi and it was rather okay...good enough to go to for convenience and not bad enough to never go again. And i'm only going off their vegetarian sushi. Aa a fellow waitress I was really unhappy with a server that I had. My roommate and I had gone recently before and we had the same server. She was really snippy with us because we're vegetarian and wanted to have (and PAY) for two ingredients to be combined together...how dare we?? Then, we have (gasp) the audacity to ask for a side of spicy mayo BEFORE we finished ordering. Needless to say it was apparent that asking for such outlandish things is a sign of a shitty person (tipper)...not true. I don't out everyday or even every week and when I do i'd like to be treated with respect and kindness, I understand everyone has bad days but to cause someone else to feel the same is just plain shitty.

Went for happy hour and the prices were good, but the seaweed paper on every roll was soggy and chewy. Service is good though. Last call for happy hour was 15min before the end time.

Very good for the price! I got the Dozika Platter and Spicy Tuna Roll. The Dozika Rolls have gyoza, seaweed salad &/or edamame, shumai, crab Rangoon's. I loved the seaweed salad! The Crab Rangoons were a little small, but great. The Spicy Tuna Roll is good for only being $5. I have had better, but it was not bad enough it wouldn't get it again. I love that delivery gives you small containers of soy sauce rather than just packets. Would definitely order again.

I have always been happy with my meal at Dozika. Their noodle dishes are wonderful and I have been impressed with their maki as well. Great food and very good service. The wait staff are prompt and aware of their patrons.

I ordered dinner from here via GrubHub today and was just not super impressed. While the delivery was fairly fast and the delivery charge wasn't awful, the food wasn't amazing. I ordered the chirashi plate which came with miso soup. A GrubHub coupon also allowed me to get a free order of crab wontons. The chirashi plate came with salmon, tuna, yellowfin (I think?), tamago, imitation crab, mushrooms, and pickled radishes. The sushi rice under all of that was well-seasoned with vinegar. I wasn't keen on the freshness of the fish - the tuna and salmon especially tasted softer than it should've been, making me think that it wasn't at the peak of freshness. The tamago was delicious, however, very sweet and flavorful. I also liked the mushrooms and the pickled radishes as well. The miso soup was nothing special, and I mean... the crab wontons were free, so. Three stars for free crab wontons and an okay selection of sashimi in the chirashi plate. Not sure if I would order from them again.

6 days a week, they have a 3:00-5:30 "happy hour." Half priced sushi/half priced maki. It is reasonably priced to begin with. We're talking maki for as little as 2.25 per roll (six pieces). I'm a vampire, so I have some trouble getting to lunch specials around town. Thank god for Dozika! Service is friendly. I wouldn't say they're hovering around, just waiting to fill half-empty glasses with water, but they're reasonably attentive. I'm tempted to do 5 stars for the value, but I'll stick with four because I might be less enthused if I ever payed full price. Like I said, though, even for double, the prices wouldn't be considered unreasonable.

I used to love Dozika but the last few times I have gone they have gotten worse and worse in regard to both food and service. When I was there last Friday night I ordered tempura. It was mushy and almost inedible. Between the five of us (including three adolescents) we didn't finish one order. The sushi was ok, but the rice was hot which made it taste off. We'll probably give them one more try, but if this pattern holds they will be off our regular rotation.

This place has great prices and the food is really good too. Their take on milk tea with tapioca was pretty interesting because it was blended with ice, which made it refreshing. The coconut flavor was perfect for the milky drink. The drunken buckwheat noodles were good, but the monk ducktofu became a bit overwhelming. The ramen was also good. For the prices, this place really can't be beat.

So far I'm less than impressed. They appear to be very popular; cater to a lot of families with small children. But they are severely understaffed. Service is disorganized and frantic. Stood in doorway for 10min after informing of how many in party (1) while tables were empty but not cleared. Only 3 servers on and just seem to not have a working system to attend to customers. Was finally seated at cleared table. No menu, nothing - another 10 minutes while the servers run around. Eventually a menu arrives. Within a reasonable amount of time they take my order. No water. No tea. No question of what I would like to drink. Miso soup arrives which isn't bad - pretty standard. Ask for water - that shows up. Ordered Shumai appetizer. Arrives lukewarm and the sauce is thick and very sweet. The "shrimp" inside is more like ground up shrimp which hasn't been cleaned well. Bits of shell and crunchy things that probably shouldn't be there. Would not get that again. The arrival of the fish has fortunately redeemed this place. The fish is very good, well prepared and presented. The rice is very good, seasoned well and not too much which can be typical for some places who offer Chirashi. I think the problem here is simply the waitstaff. Just not well organized and become frantic and "lost" when the place is full. If I were just rating the fish, I would go 4 stars but because of the poor service I have to drop to 3. Service is an important part of the dining experience and this place simply falls short. If your in the area then it's not a bad option. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Perhaps if try get the service situation in hand, it would be different.

After my experience at Dozika today, I told myself I HAD to write a review. I ordered a mango bubble tea and the Dozika noodle (see pictures I posted). I am VERY impressed with the customer service of this place. Immediately upon coming in I was greeted, even though it was at an odd time at 3PM in the afternoon. The lady who took my order was very courteous, she said "sure" on numerous occasions. I ordered my bubble tea to go and it came with a cup sleeve that had handles on it, how amazing and convenient is this? Tell me another place that has this! Perfect, because I was wanting bubble tea and was not looking forward to holding the cup in this cold rainy weather. No item on their menu cost more than $14. Appetizers are average around $5 and are meant to be shared, generous portion. The ambiance is very nice and clean, does NOT have a distinctive smell like most dining places. Red walls and booths by glass plated window overlooking Dempster street. Black tables and fun mood lightings. I know they have half off sushi from Sunday-Thursday 3:30-5:30...But when I was picking up my food around 3:35 there was still no one in there, maybe because of the weather? But usually people would JUMP on sushi special deals. A lot of coupons for this place, on their website( dozikapanasian.com ) and on their carry out menu not to mention the many signs posted on their glass window. Not sure if this place is struggling business-wise? As for taste, I have always been sort of hesitant about the pan-asian or asian-fusion concept. Seems like a lot of places in Evanston are all about pan-asian or what not. I think this is where the restaurant falls short, the flavors are not very distinctive in their food. My mango bubble tea tasted some what bland. Though the price is fair, for $3.50. My Dozika noodle looked really nice, I have to give them props for being the ONLY Asian place I've been to that actually used decoration in my takeout order. Shredded carrot and pieces of iceberg lettuce adorned my dish, so it's almost like I got a side salad to go with my meal for free! The Dozika noodle was acceptable, but nothing jumps YES! I appreciate that their wide flat noodle was not all broken up as most Asian places that try to cook it jails and the noodle turns out gooey. This place rocks texture wise but flavor lacks. Maybe it is because that they are afraid of breaking up the noodle that the noodle is not cooked long enough and in enough sauces. The portion though, is pretty fair. I think I will go back, because I had literally the best carry out experience EVER at any Asian places. Oh did I mention my silverware were wrapped nicely in a napkin with a paper napkin holder, cheeyah! And on top of that they also gave me a pair of chopsticks, just so I have the option between fork or chopsticks. Thank you for nicely wrapping your silverware and being so considerate because I hate it when restaurants just randomly sticks a plastic fork in your order and I am alway weary about how clean the fork is. I am also very happy with the take out container that my food came in, very sturdy and seals in heat well to keep my food warm. I am excited to go back and try some of their other items, like the shumai appetizer or maybe crispy soft noodle. THANK YOU DOZIKA for being so thoughtful and considerate! You scored big points in going toward being a successful restaurant business. My only other complaint beside from the slightly above average food is I DID NOT EVEN KNOW THIS WAS AN ASIAN PLACE!? I don't know if the name Dodzika hurt or help the restaurant. It's great that it's not another thair basil or Golden China or something but Dozika...the name is very unique but when we are trying to frantically find a restaurant, that name doesn't necessarily register. In summary: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Food: 4/5

AVOID!!! They served my sushi to another table, I watched them handle the food, once they figured out the mistake, they brought it back to the counter, then tried to serve it to me like nothing happened!! Horrible. As i was walking out the door, they tried to tell me that I was wrong, and that nobody touched it. WRONG!!

I like Dozika, but I need to qualify this review by admitting that I don't eat hardcore sushi. I like things like teriyaki, curry, California rolls, miso soup, etc. For all those things, my family and I really like Dozika. My favorite dish is probably the green curry with eggplant, chicken and sweet potato. It's inexpensive, fast, filling, and no frills, which is good with kids. The service isn't consistent - sometimes it's really friendly, sometimes I feel like they wish we hadn't come in, but I'm not going to Dozika for a fine dining experience, so the service isn't that important to me.

I must admit I came there an hour before closing on a Sunday night. They close at 9pm on Sunday. The server was really accommodating and let us sit and still order our dinner. I started of with the tempura appetizer mostly of tempura vegetables and two big pieces of shrimp. The tempura appetizer was just ok, I would not order it again. For dinner, yes if you read my reviews you guessed it I had the tofu PAD THAI. It was pretty good but I am no PAD THAI Connoisseur. Their ginger tea was really delicious. Overall nice place but I feel that the prices are $1-2 higher than other Asian spots. I would be curious to try their sushi next time.

I forget that I like this place. I haven't been here in such a long time so it was a nice change of pace to have lunch there with my sister. The sushi here is pretty good. They love their cream cheese and sauces with a kick. The menu had a lot of specialty rolls with spicy toppings and those that would sneak in some cream cheese. Nothing necessarily wrong with this and actually speaks more my language. I don't make it much to Evanston, but I'll have to try when they have their sushi happy hours which is a nice option.

Ehh... still have yet to find a really solid Asian restaurant in Evanston. A big problem is I feel like they often try to offer a "pan-Asian" menu and therefore aren't particularly good/specialized at one cuisine... I ordered a lunch special with an udon and chirashi. The udon broth was REALLY sweet (almost syrupy) and the sushi rice in the chirashi tasted like plain rice... disappointing because I love how sushi rice typically has a slightly vinegary-sweet taste. Overall, it was okay. Will I come here again? Maybe.

I have ordered several all vegetable party trays of maki. Each time, they are perfect. I get "ohhs" and "ahhs" every time I bring one of their trays to an event. This last tray, the wasabi paste was in a decorative, holiday design. Very creative. And, of course, totally fresh and delicious.

I do not understand how this place stays in business. I've been numerous times (my mistake) and like it less and less each time. Sushi: not bad, because bad sushi is really bad. But there is so much better right across the street on Dempster (hello Sea Ranch). Noodle and rice dishes, entrees: not for me thanks. (I've tried a bunch, they all have this same slightly off smell and flavor). Fried rice: OK. good portion size. Crab Rangoon: not possible to screw this one up. All of that and they might have still gotten 3 stars, but the service is absolutely miserable. We will be the only customers in the place and not be able to get the attention of the waiter because he's too busy staring at the tv. Or I've experienced a server who didn't understand enough English to take an order. Which would have been ok if he had asked someone else to help translate instead of just ignoring the question (which was related to menu) and then telling me later that he had not understood because he didn't speak english. Yeah. Good thing it wasn't an allergy related question. There's better at the same intersection. There's better a few blocks away. So why?

I 100% agree with the review Natalie left a day ago. The food was ok, but nothing to rave about. But I could tell it would be this way the minute i walked in the door. The restaurant is very casual and was empty, although we went at 3:30 for happy hour for a late lunch. The server was eating her lunch a few tables away from us and their daughter was playing with toys in the corner. The sushi was small and simple, but for a few dollars a roll you can't complain. I wouldn't come back here unless I was in the same area and couldn't find anything else.

My favorite pad thai in Evanston (I've tried many)! It's a little sweet and a little greasy -- but doesn't have a heavy tomato base. Also, they have a 10% Northwestern discount. Prices are reasonable, especially with the discount.

I have been going to this resaurant since it first opened. I always have loved the seaweed salad, honey garlic chicken, tako salad maki, and the california roll. I have never had a bad experience there. I usually order the mango smoothie or the coconut bubble tea. The service is always excellent. Now the restaurant isn't always hot with buisness because Union Pizzaria is across thr street. If you asked me weather you should go to Union or Dozika, i would always choose Dozika. The service is much faster and better at Dozika. I am always so uncofertable at Union because it is so crowded. Go Dozika!!!

Ordered Spicy Kung Pao for sunday brunch from here to pick up. Stale vegetables and Tofu that smelled bad. I have had dinner earlier here couple of months ago. Something has changed recently. Looks like they have decided to make money by using left over vegetables from previous day.

I used to order quite a bit of Dozika. Their maki is cheap and passable if not the freshest. The staff is certainly friendly, but after running the gamut of Thai places in Evanston this place falls pretty far down the list, even given the price. Nothing on this menu cant be found elsewhere for around the same money and definitely better quality. I have a sweet spot in my heart for this place so the fact that it still only garners 3*s out of me should tell you that nothing special is happening here, next...

I hate knocking places...but my dining experience here was not memorable. If I could give it 2.5 stars I would, but I don't think it's worth 3. On the plus side - their selection of Asian beers was legit, and their prices were very reasonable. But that's where the good vibes stop. I thought the service was lackluster, and by the way I was there on a night when it wasn't busy. I didn't feel that the waitresses were attentive at all which is a pet peeve of mine. And speaking of lackluster...I thought the food was 'meh.' We tried the Shrimp Rolls for an appetizer (too hot when they came out; and when they cooled down weren't too tasty) Miso Soup (now this was on par with other spots; good job here) and the NY Maki Roll and the White Tuna Tempura Roll for the meal. I wasn't impressed with either...I mean they were both bland with no flavor at all. I may have been spoiled by various sushi spots in Chicago, but candidly I can't see myself going back there.

I can guarantee that this review about Dozika is long overdue, but a must! In the last week, I've been there twice, and I can't complain. The term pan-asian is a little bit vague, but when you figure out what exactly is being served, it makes sense. At Dozika, you can order typical noodle dishes, or you can peruse their delicious selection of sushi. Best part: you can't go wrong! First time I went there last week I ordered a Yellow Curry noodle dish which was delectable and made my taste buds sing! I loved how creative it was, because it had sweet potatoes in it! Yellow curry is usually my go to curry, so I was pleasantly surprised that Dozika chose to shake up something I was already so used to! All the flavors blended beautifully, and I was completely satisfied with this meal and then some. On my second trip there, I brought two friends who were unfamiliar with Dozika, but eager to try it. We decided that sushi was the way to go, since the prices are extremely reasonable and I remembered the sushi being quite tasty as well. One of my friends didn't really seem to understand how sushi works as a meal, so he ordered tuna maki and salmon maki. Although they were good, he complained that there wasn't enough food to fill him for dinner. This was no fault of the restaurant's, simply his status as a novice with sushi becoming very clear. I ordered the Sushi Deluxe with a side of Salmon maki. What makes Dozika so affordable, besides the great prices, is all the specials that they offer. Every day of the week has a different special available, such as free Edamame, or reduced price Sushi Deluxe. It's a great selling point. My Sushi Deluxe was 6 pieces of sashimi sushi, served with 6 pieces of tuna maki. For 10 dollars, it was a great deal. My other friend H, known as my sushi partner in crime, ordered Dozika's shrimp tempura. She seemed to be pleasantly surprised by it, and commented on how much she liked it. She also ordered the sashimi Fatty white tuna, which came with 2 pieces. The look on her face was one of pure ecstasy. Nothing like Fatty white tuna for your taste buds! Her only complaint was that she wanted more sushi, but she definitely enjoyed it. The bottom line is this: Dozika is delicious, no matter what you order. Whether it be sushi or a noodle dish, your taste buds will surely thank you for taking them on such a fantastic culinary experience!

I came here with my friend, as soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated. We were chatting and didn't notice 10 minutes had passed by but we definitely felt ready to start with a drink. I looked over my shoulder and I see our waitress eating in plain sight.... I mean...... normally guests shouldn't see you eating.... Ok. So she sees me looking over and she comes to take our order and since then started to be attentive. We had the potstickers, good, edamame, also good, but when I got my sushi... it wasn't really fresh nor warm as I'm used to. I had ordered the Tempura Shrimp roll, and that usually comes with warm shrimp.. and the Tuna Maki wasn't really up to my standards. I will revisit this place but only for their warm food but never again for the rolls.

Overall awful. To start we ordered the potato croquettes. They were over done and completely bland. Then when we got our sushi it was plain terrible. The first roll tasted like undercooked bread. It was chewy and doughy with the smallest sliver of unagi. The special Philly roll was sweet as hell. The service.... The service was so bad. The waitress did not greet us. She walked us to our table and asked what we wanted to drink. After that she was seen another two times and one of those was to give us the check. The only decent thing about the meal was the smoothie. Which got ruined when I had a tapioca ball. They're supposed to be soft chewy and slightly Sweet. These were hard dry and flavorless. Basically warm play dough. But the smoothie was good.... Long story short, don't go here.

My original five-star review was too liberal; I was a Yelp newbie and hadn't developed my strict sensibilities yet. There's nothing at all wrong with this place (except for one far-past incident of PPT). It's very solid, reliable, and enjoyable. There was a two-year period when I would order takeout sushi on my way home from work about every six to eight weeks. But before last night I hadn't done that for several months and hadn't dined in for a couple of years. I wasn't disappointed by the service, which was as attentive and gracious as ever. I WAS somewhat disappointed by my old stand-by Bangkok roll, which was just plain bland. However, their shitake maki remains one of the best in the land. I realized that I had never tried their thai spicy basil (one of my two favorite Thai dishes) so I amended that oversight. At its best, this dish comprises a delectable simplicity; Dozika's version followed this ideal expertly. I would rank this in the top ten spicy basils in my Chicagoland experiences, perhaps not the top five, but at that point you're almost splitting hairs. It's nice to see that an old favorite hasn't slipped. They were about two-thirds full on a snowy Wednesday evening, so hopefully they are doing well and will be around for a good long while. Perhaps I'll become a semi-regular again.

Less than mediocre. I will not come back here. We ordered the cucumber salad, spring rolls, California maki roll. The cucumbers were flavorless, we could have gotten the same maki roll at any grocery store and the spring rolls tasted stale, old, were falling apart.

I really like Dozika. I am more into regular Chinese food than sushi and thai, but they have a lot of options. I think it's very affordable. My fave dish is the orange chicken. The staff is always so quick to take care of orders and always nice to make sure you are enjoying your food. My girlfriend and I enjoy it regularly.

For their sake - I really hope they improve on a few levels. There are SO many options for Asian food in Evanston and Dozika hardly competes. Positives - Have had a few yummy items HUGE Menu. I mean so many items that even in a huge group everyone is bound to find something to enjoy. Good daily specials (even though I think they stopped some of these) and they offer coupons when getting pickup or delivery. Negatives HORRIBLE service. I mean I have watched table after table look around waiting for someone to come over and give water and by the time they show up the person is annoyed, hungry, and made a decision about everything. They don't try to smile or anything and the one girl gets overwhelmed all the time. Atmosphere is so quiet that everyone can hear your conversation. Not one food item has had me say "wow!" and I love sushi, japanese, and thai so so much. Their sushi REALLY disappointed me. Worst shrimp tempura roll I've ever ordered. Its funny because I'll still order often because I live so close, I can order through grubhub, and they haven't made me hate it yet. I really hope they improve on a few things so they can get more clientele like all other sushi/Thai places in Evanston.

I think I will be making more orders from Dozika. The curry has been great, sushi too, and having a free edamame with your orders (via groupon) and being able to order online being a big plus by itself. Plus being able to do the tip on the order means no hassle at the door. I've found their food to be consistently excellent and have a huge variety. From thai to chinese to japanese in one place!

I haven't actually eaten inside of Dozika, but working a few doors down from there, it's very convenient to order!! They have an excellent online menu, and so I've ordered a good 20 times, at least, in the past year. I love the Special Philadelphia Maki and Gyoza - by far my favorite items on the menu! The service is great, too - they are very quick! I highly recommend this sushi bar's food!

I had a bad experience with this restaurant a few years ago after ordering their bento box. I decided to come here again to see why it's always so busy, maybe it's gotten better, etc. I started with the spicy salmon maki roll. Too much spicy sauce and everything else, not enough salmon. The Dozika Noodle (read: pad kee mao) was bland, bland, bland. Not even spicy. Bland to the max. At least the service is good, but chances are I won't be coming.

A little sleeper of a sushi place, varied menu, a lot of nice stuff. $5 drink specials. The Tuna Takaziki (sp?) was good, but really just a medium sized salad with a couple slices of tuna in it. The spring rolls were nice, if not the freshest thing I've ever ordered. However, my indispensable dining companion had such gastric distress from the Volcano roll that I doubt I'll come back again. This place reinforces my designer opinion (admittedly: snobby designer opinion) of "if a place has a bad logo, leave it alone." Redesign that menu. In fact, call me. I work for food.

The sushi and beer are excellent. Make sure your bill is charged correctly. Despite the waitress approaching us and telling us how the special for Friday night was $2.50 beers and we decided to order them because of her huge announcement, the check still had the full price of the beers. I just felt that could be a way for them to easily make more money. It took forever for them to void the originial cost, it wasn't our fault, it may have been easier to just give it back in cash, but w/e. They have specials every night, so maybe the computer system isn't so advanced to automatically calculate the discount, so double check it.

I'm still not impressed with their food 7 years later. The kids meals are good and my kids ate all of it up - one of them had the chicken katsu which came with rice (or mac n cheese), miso soup, broccoli and the katsu. There was a sushi sampler which my daughter munched on. The adult meals left us feeling very mediocre where I had tried one of their Thai curry special noodles and felt overwhelmed by the curry sauce which took over the entire dish. My husband's bento box was a bit tasteless. At least, they have hot sake which for $7 for a large bottle is a good deal.

This place is a great walk-to-spot for decent asian food if you live in the area. They have one of the best kids menu I've seen. The portion is big that I always have my two kids split an order. My reason for going back to this place is their take on Be Bim Bop. A bowl of fresh steamed vegetable assortment, succulent beef, egg and the right amount of chili paste - it almost tastes healthy! This is definitely a go-to place for me!

A friend and I stopped in here after learning that Blind Faith Cafe down the street is closed on Mondays. Interjection: what the heck, Blind Faith? Dozika has a "special" every day. Mondays = free crab rangoon appetizer, which is kind of nice on account of FREE FOOD. But crab rangoon is just a blasphemy of food in general, it's one of those things that will never taste right no matter how carefully it's made.. For the entree I went with the "Dozika noodles," figuring they would put extra effort into the namesake dish. But ehh! It reminded me of the "crazy noodles" at Thai restaurants, except drier and with less flavor... Next time I'll just head to one of the nearby gazillion Thai restaurants. My friend got the yellow curry which had sweet potato, which she was very excited about. I don't believe in curry that isn't spicy (who can prove it exists?), so I can't even give a real opinion on the yellow curry, other than this face: -__- They have beer, which is nice. And service was polite and attentive. But the food was just okay. We came in because it was a backup, and it'll be a backup next time (if there is a next time) too.

I've gone to many different sushi places, sometimes you just want one that is laid back without losing its quality. This is a great casual place to have sushi, Japanese cuisine and thai. The service was great, the sushi was fresh and delicious. I only wish they had more selection and maki but I am not complaining! This place has something for everyone--if you don't like sushi they have great chicken and shrimp on the menu. I would highly recommend the honey garlic chicken, it was so delicious!! I will be coming back here again! They have half priced sushi happy hour Sun-Thurs 3:30pm-5:30pm.

Wow! This place is phenomenal! I just scrolled through previous reviews and can't believe some of these people ate at the same restaurant. Or is it just that some "yelpers" like to complain... This was THE BEST Asian food I've had in I can't remember when. We had the tempura dinner and I don't think I've ever had better tempura- very light, crispy, flavorful with wonderful sauce. But THE ABSOLUTE BEST was the "Crispy and Soft Noodle" entree- doesn't sound like much from the name but it was amazing! I love panang curry and when I first looked at the menu, didn't find it. This was like panang curry but better than I've ever had. Mix of crispy and soft noodles as the name suggests with flavor similar to panang but even better. Then we had the Pad See Iew which is always a standard for me. Must confess- I was so full with the other 2 I didn't even try it but we have plenty of leftovers. We had a Groupon and I'm so glad we did. I've driven by this restaurant many times and when it first opened, thought it was a bar- somehow the logo looked like a cocktail glass from a distance. Hadn't tried it till tonight but promise- we will be back! So nice when a Groupon introduces you to a new place that you will continue to enjoy. And the service was awesome! Saw other comments about poor service and again, either the place has changed dramatically, we just hit a good night or these other folks are just negative but the staff couldn't have been friendlier or faster or more accommodating. I just can't say enough positive. Just looking forward to our next visit! Thank you Dozika!!!

Whatever good or nice remarks I'd planned for this place went down the toilet with the Volcano Roll. Within 30 minutes after eating the incredibly spicy Volcano Roll, it erupted suddenly from within. There is a reason why they call it a Volcano Roll, and you don't want to find out. Trust me.

Gotta love happy hour! Squeaked into Dozika after watching Spring Awakening at the Ethel Barber theatre at Northwestern. We were able to order from the happy hour menu, which is from 1230 - 530pm on sun-thursday. I went with some standards, as this was our first time dining here. Picked up tuna, mackerel, unagi and salmon sashimi, spider roll, spicy tuna roll , and that was my dinner. My wife got the salmon teriyaki entree, which came with veggie tempura, but that was on the regular menu. The veggie tempura came with sweet potato, broccoli, and carrot, and the tentsuyu that came with it rivals the now closed Matsuya(sadness) The fish was fresh, the rice good but wanted to fall apart, but otherwise a good first time experience. They do offer brown rice, so that put a smile on my wifes face. We also split a green tea smoothie, which was maybe a little too icy. Service was prompt. Food was good. Me likey!

While the food is okay, the restaurant experience and service is not good. Last night my Mom and I went for dinner at 7:30 pm. While we are still eating the meal, they turn up the lights and make it very clear to us that they want us to leave. And this is while they are also training someone on how to serve. It is 8:15 PM and we have food and drinks in front of us. Note to new staff and especially the woman training her - if I have a full glass of wine and food in front of me and you are clearly expecting a tip for your service, this is not the right way to go about it.

My wife and I walked by Dozika several times and it always looked inviting, so we thought we'd go. The place itself looks quite comfortable, with booths by the window (that was the inviting part about it), and tables inside. The service staff was courteous, if not entirely knowledgeable. We ordered edamame, a thai beer and bubble ice drink. The bubble drink was rather mildly flavored and my wife and I both thought as if it were mostly lowfat milk and sugar in the glass. The tapioca bubbles were not fresh and firm, but rather brittle and slimy. It took some persuasion on my part, but she finally ordered a jasmine tea which was a refreshing and aromatic experience by contrast. The beer was chilled to perfection and I was quite happy with my selection. We ordered a chicken salad wrap and the japanese style stir fried egg noodles with mixed vegetables and chicken. The order arrived rather quickly. The salad wrap was tasty, although we both thought the lettuce could have been fresher and crisper and the chicken may have been just a bit on the dry side. The other ingredients looked freshly cut and quite crisp. Not bad overall, but far from great. The stir fried noodles with mixed vegetables and chicken were a dull, almost colorless and kind of greasy looking pile on the platter. They weren't garnished with ginger or green onions, the carrots in the dish were quite brown and chewy (not how you'd want your carrots), the green onions were limp and the celery was overpowering the entire dish. The chicken was tender, but again kind of dry. The dish I was served in was green and my food was brown, so right from the first glance I just was not enthused. My wife and I just gave each other a shrug and agreed we were not going to be in any kind of rush to walk back in the next time we were walking by. The restaurant is in an amazing location and probably gets tons of foot traffic going right by it all the time. If I knew the owner personally, I'd recommend a do-over on the preparation and food quality. The variety on the menu is not being cooked or served the right way and there's incredible upside potential here. Pros: Convenient Location, Great Menu Choices, Friendly Staff, Best Jasmine Tea Cons: Uninspired Cooking, Stale Ingredients, No fortune cookies (!)

We really like this friendly, small well-windowed not cookie-cutter sunny spot. I don't get the service complaints at all, as service has always been plentiful and if not necessarily accurate, fixable with a smile. Large enough menu, with very reasonable appetizers and many main dishes around $12. We have had both the sushi and Thai and lean toward the Thai here. Very reasonably priced Thai AND Vietnamese wraps, $5, that can feed 2-3. Had a wonderful yellow curry whole soft shell crab yesterday that was DELICIOUS for $12. If not busy, they seem very willing to modify or experiment a little. I have asked for and received, menu alterations with a smile, not something you seldom get in an asian restaurant. I'm not big on sweet drinks and they experimented with a mango bubble shake for me by leaving syrup out. I'm a fan. Cute place, family friendly too. Specials every day. Pro's - very reasonably priced, creative Japanese & Thai menu, fun bubble drinks and ice cream deserts, great sunny window booths Con's - can be a little erratic but fixable with a smile, not big

Dozika is the second best sushi restaurant that has insanely good special-price deals and is within walking distance of my house. Before you dismiss this as an extremely qualified review and not pertinent to you or your life I should tell you there are six sushi places within walking distance of my pad and full-on four of them have really good price-specials. I know what I'm talking about here. It's good. The place is clean; design is savvy, light, and fun; and the food is tasty. I've been binging on their sushi because Monday through Thursday they have an early-bird special - half price maki from 3pm-6pm or something like that. If you don't mind eating a little early, it's a great place to walk to and eat decently and cheaply. They're always kind of pleasant in there; very smiley and nice. You can't really complain about that. I suspect that, had I to get in the car to come here, I never would. Not that it's not a great little place: it is, please rest assured. But the surfeit of sushi (great sushi at that) within a stone's throw of this joint kind of would take precedence. What exactly does it say about Evanston that it can support six sushi places within a half mile radius? Honestly, that's kind of amazing. Right - to circle back, wrap up: Dozika's fine. Haven't had anything other than sushi there, but it makes a great place to sit for a while, have a decent roll, read a book, and watch the world go by for a bit. Nuff said.

Probably the best sushi I've had in years. Pontip M. and I ventured to Dozika on Saturday for dinner. I ordered three maki rolls, all of which were amazingly delicious. I think I forget how great sushi can be when done to perfection until I'm experiencing it. I'm certain that visions of sushi will dance in my head for the next few weeks. As for the service, I simply could not believe how quickly our order came out. I've grown too used to waiting for an unreasonable amount of time at an overcrowded restaurant. Being probably one of only three or four tables occupied probably helped expedite our service, but I'll take what advantages I can get!

Went here on a whim, and only on a whim. Haven't been to a Japanese/Thai restaurant that I've liked. Here's to add to the list because for some reason, being a jack of all trades on both cuisines make you a master of none. If you are going to eat here anyway, choose the Thai. We tried the tekka don and chicken pad thai. The tekka don was kinda "purty"-arranged nicely with some accoutrements, pickled radish and the like. Not too exciting, but the fish wasn't horrible. The pad thai was decent, better than most, and I liked the fact that there was plenty of chicken and bean sprouts to break up the noodle repetition. Nothing to come back for though. Service was interesting: they were fast, friendly, but oddly enough, very unsure of what they were serving. When they asked us how we were doing, it seemed apologetic? At the low prices for the dishes, no need to apologize, I guess. Our two dishes ended up around happily in the twenties, with tax and tip. The decor was simple, nice bird mural on the back wall. Not going to be on our repeat list.

Noodles: So good I can't believe I walked away from them to write this review. Sushi: Just follow the rules of inland sushi (the further you are from water, the more likely you should order rolls instead of sashimi). Their volcano maki blows my mind. Summer maki was fantastic too. Staff: Always attentive and sweet. Atmosphere: Lovely. Bonus: Across the street from BUNNIES!

I called in a to-go order of pad thai today for late lunch - the bill was $7 and some change. It was hands-down the best pad thai I've had in the Chicagoland area. I don't know how authentic it is, but I love, love, love, loved it. I thought my reaction might've been due to hunger, but I just microwaved the leftovers and it's phenomenal. The noodles are a little thinner than I'm used to and it's not as 'wet' as some renditions, but this is definitely how I prefer it! The flavor is great, but I will say that I noticed it was lime-ier near the lime, so I recommend mixing it up to get he full impact on your palate. Some might consider it hasty to give the place five stars based on one dish and one visit - but in my defense, I don't think I'll ever order anything else. Dozika's pad thai gets my enthusiastic endorsement!

I LOVE this place....whether I'm craving Thai, Chinese or Sushi...they have it all...you can get most of the entrees vegetarian, the curries rock, the entrees are always yummy, the sushi is fab, and the prices are always really good!!! Check this place out! Oh and it's street parking, but I have never had a problem finding a spot close by.

This is more like a 3.5, but it was good, and totally what I wanted at the time. I had 2 different rolls, both I thought were good. I like simple, and they seem to do simple well. We also got a plate of chicken fried rice to split. THE RICE WAS AMAZING. Just how I like it- and something I seldom come across in Chicago. Service was fine. Attentive and smiling. It was a little warm in there the night we went. They do half priced sushi from 3:30-5:30 I think? Sunday-Thursday.

Actually I'd give it a 2.5 if I could but because of decent service but the fact the the quality was better years ago when I was there I wouldn't go back. Stay away from the Bi Bim Bop and it was definitely below average - meat was dry and tough. It's better for it's sushi.

the good: The Boston roll will change your life. Very good crab rangoon and spicy California roll. The Evanston roll is tasty as well. High quality. The bad: the Tempura was so so. The verdict: did I mention the Boston roll? Definitely worth a shot.

Love Dozika - I go for sashimi, seaweed salad, and a roll now and then. I'm a "sit at the sushi bar" person and find that the fish is generally fresh and the chefs are creative, using tobika and other garnishes to creative effect.

I'm always really sad when a place that used to be decent-good turns into crap over night. I'm not sure if the management/owners changed, but I'm guessing they did because the food and service has gotten way worse. The sushi is okay, but nothing special. Other than that, the only things I find edible here are the Pad Thai (pretty standard and boring), the red curry (though I haven't had this here in a while, so try at your own risk), and the Gomae (spinach salad, but overpriced). Also, I find all of the Chinese dishes oily and disgusting (however, I'm not a big fan of Chinese cuisine to begin with). Also, not too long ago they changed all of the seating areas, so that now the booths are nailed down and way too far away from the tables to be comfortable. WTF.

This is my local sushi place. I order them for take out a lot and love that they give free crab rangoon with every order over $15. I go there most frequently to get a bubble tea. My favorite combo is mango, strawberry, banana with lots of tapioca. Sushi happy hour also rocks!

  • Keiko S.

Despite what the menu indicates, this place doesn't offer Thai, Japanese or Chinese cuisine in its truest form. I wouldn't necessarily call it "fusion", either, because they simply split the menu in half between Thai and Japanese dishes. (For example, you get either "miso" or "tom yum" for soup.) And unfortunately, they don't prepare either cuisine to much satisfaction, lacking in richness and fragrance. Their thai sukiyaki tastes almost identical to the one I make at home using the bottled, commercial sauce...hmm. In any case, if you like the "westernized" versions of sushi rolls and thai dishes, this might serve its purpose. The prices are fair, too. However, if you want something more authentic and are willing to spend more, head down Chicago Ave to find "Noodle Garden" or "Kuni." The decor is nicely presentable - clean, modern and reasonably spacious. The servers are all very friendly, regularly checking up on the customers.

I do enjoy the food here, remembering that it is a simple place with a menu of sushi and other Asian dishes. I haven't been there in a while and I don't recall what we ate the last time, but I think they had a nice variety of food where you can have some good rolls and a nice mixed drink.

    (4)
  • Carolyn G.

The prices were reasonable and service was pleasant and fast. Each weeknight, they offer a different special, and we just happened to go on "free crab rangoon" night. The sushi was pretty good and the noodle dishes were good, too. I'd say Dozika is a solid go-to restaurant, but not a place that will WOW you.

  • Mike B.

Since I live steps away from this place at the moment, I thought I would try it. If you have the option walk about 15 feet and go to the Sea Ranch, that is if want Sushi, as I haven't tried the noddles at either place. The sushi was just blah, rice didn't taste like sushi rice and was a bit dry. I wish it was good, there's always people sitting inside that look happy, but I wasn't impressed at all.

I have never been disappointed with the food at Dozika. Their Winter Maki roll is the best thing I've had there. Top it off with a Thai iced coffee and I'm set! Depending on the day, the service can be so-so. But for the most part, the staff is friendly and the food is served quickly.

  • Kathy P.

I've been here several times, and I have to say last night was the only time that I left feeling mildly dissatisfied. The food was OK. The service definitely took a downturn from the last time I was there -- according to my friend, a regular, both servers were new. I asked our server to swap out soba noodles for udon in a dish and she was very nice about it, but other than that, we rarely saw her, even for drink refills. My friend enjoyed her yellow curry which was flanked by chunks of sweet potato, a seasonal favorite at dozika, and my other friend said her sushi was OK. The edamame was overcooked, and my tempura udon was nothing to write home about. I'll write this one off as the gloomy weather making people lethargic and kind of blah. That's definitely how I felt about the food and the service.

  • Anish C.

I paid under $10 for my meal but still thought it wasn't worth it. The service was good. The food was mediocre. We had the Honey Garlic Chicken and Thai Yellow Curry. The Honey Garlic Chicken felt chewy and like it had been sitting around for some time. It was Monday and the Crab Rangoon was FREE but it wasn't too great either. It was a beautiful summer day but the place had a depressing air about it. But to be fair to them they did have a ton of great food at the Food Channel which was airing on the TV. I'm not going to Dozika again unless I feel something changes fundamentally.

You ever want to go out with a big group of people, and some like sushi, some like thai, some like bubble tea and soup? This is the place for you! The food is good, not amazing but good. I would really recommend it to people that don't know what they want but want somethin' a little asian inspired. I ordered the miso soup which was good, the green tea (came with a baggie), the spider roll (good), the shrimp tempura roll, as well as the spicy salmon roll. All were good, I finished it all, granted... I was kinda starving. There is a kid's menu as well with little dishes for kids.

This place was ok, but nothing to really write home about. I had the luch special with Lard Nar. The steamed vegetables were boring, but I had nothing to put on them besides soy sauce. We didn't try the sushi maybe we should have. Being that there are a lot of places in Evanston and I am not near this place, I will try something else next time I am in the area.

  • Andrew T.

Pretty standard good quality sushi... I like the rolls with the fried crisp flakes dropped on top. The real plus here is that since the gf isn't a huge sushi fan, she gets the beef teriyaki, and (embarassingly) literally, licks the plate clean of the sauce. There's some kind of drug in there, I swear. The veggie tempura that comes with the teriyaki is good too. EDIT: Had to knock it down a star for a bad delivery meal. Beef teriyaki was very tough and tempura had soggy and tasteless batter.

  • Erin S.

I'm rating only the sushi as I have never had any of their other entrees before. I think the miso soup is great, the tamago is good and the rest is so so. The quality of their fish is not the best and the pieces are fairly small. If I'm really craving sushi during 3:30 - 5:30 and am strapped for cash I'll go get their happy hour selection for half off. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places in Evanston I would rather go to. As far as parking is concerned, there is street parking and a public parking garage just down the block. As far as decor is concerned, I love the panoramic windows (great for people watching) but the place could use a face lift. Meh. I've had better.

  • Jamie H.

I've eaten here many times with friends, it's actually become a regular hang out. The sushi is not the best I've had but it is good. My favorite item on the menu there are the cold Soba noodles with Tempura. They also make great curries and soups. This place is definitely worth a try if you haven't been there already.

I went here for lunch today - it had been awhile since my first or second visit years ago. I have to say that I've experienced better Thai food. We ordered the Spring Rolls and split the Pad Thai. The Spring Rolls were very sloppy. The rice paper was not rolled properly and the rolls were swimming in soy sauce. The Pad Thai was no different. Very bland, sloppy, and greasy. I had taken a Thai cooking class at the Chopping Block and attempted both Spring Rolls and Pad Thai a few times and actually made it the night before. I swear, I felt that my versions were so much better than what I had at Dozika. It's a shame, too. Because I could have swore I had a better and different experience the first time I came here. Maybe it was because I ordered a Japanese entree and they excel in that cuisine.

I really despise places like this - 'asian' but without any identity. Straddling isn't a strategy - its a tactic that should have killed this restaurant the day they opened. Somehow the culture-starved Evanstonians don't seem to get it and keep coming back, time and time again. The time I went the service was atrocious, slower than slow, even though we were one of two tables in the place. Our lunch was just not worth the wait. Serves me right for breaking my own rules for dining at this type of establishment.

  • Darwin S.

I have been ordering from Dozika for probably the last five years and I don't know why I haven't given them a review on Yelp. First let me start by saying that I truly love this place simply because of their consistency. Food is always delivered hot and to my door in under 45 minutes. Somehow every time I order I end up getting a free order of crab Rangoon or California rolls. If you decide to dine in the service is as consistent as their deliver. Plus their location is a great for a couples dates in Evanston. Overall this is a great food spot in Evanston that is pretty reasonable, I just wish they catered.

Ok, pan-Asian place with sushi and an interesting assortment of noodle dishes. Seems to be Thai owned judging from the flavor variations from traditional styles in the nonThai dishes. The sushi is not great but it is adequate. Happy hour prices on sushi makes it a relatively good bargain if you happen to go at the right time. The Vietnamese spring rolls are open ended, had chicken in addition to the usual shrimp, and were served with a sauce with chopped peanuts and a dollop of sriracha already mixed into the sweet thin sauce, which was much lighter than the usual sauce at other places. The ramen was surprisingly close to how traditional Japanese ramen is supposed to taste. The right noodles and ingredients for the most part. Kamaboko (fish cake) and menma (pickled bamboo shoot) are unaccountably absent in most ramen offerings but were present here. The soup was a bit one dimensional, without the subtlety of a soup that has been simmered for a long time with the proper veggies, bones, carcasses, etc. I'm guessing it is basically an instant broth flavored with soy sauce. The Thai ice coffee was adequate too. Overall, not a bad little joint though I have a feeling that the quality of the dishes probably varies to a great extent depending on whether the dish is from a culinary tradition with which the chef is comfortable. I would bet the Thai dishes are good but I have to reserve judgment on the Chinese food until I try it. The Japanese dishes seem to follow traditional guidelines but fall short of the quality you get from one who really has an in depth understanding born from either long experience or intense study - in other words, adequate. The service was friendly. The acoustics are not so great. Good, low-key, neighborhood spot, that is worth a try.

I like the ambiance but wouldn't rave about their sushi. I got the sashimi so I could actually assess the quality of the fish. I'll admit it wasn't bad - better than I expected given the "fusion" nature of the restaurant. My friends enjoyed their noodle dishes (yakisoba, dozika noodles) which both looked and smelled delicious. The service was outstanding. Zero wait (weekday night), and we got all our food in what seemed like less than 10 minutes and had our waters refilled constantly. We also stayed until about a half hour after closing and the staff didn't even try to kick us out. They definitely get an additional half star just for that. I still prefer Sea Ranch and Kuni's for sushi but will come back to try Dozika's noodle dishes. It feels comfortable inside, and with cheapish wine by the glass and beer, you can't ask for much more sometimes.

I found the food to be lacking. The breading on the tempura thick & doughy & the sushi not that great either. I usually give a restaurant another chance but in this case, I won't go back. It was a dismal meal.

  • Luan N.

They have a few bargain lunch specials. I got the the udon and chirashi sushi set for under $10. The udon broth was too sweet and concentrated. The chirashi sushi had 5 thin pieces of fish. I guess it gets the job done of quelling my hunger and satisfying the notion of eating Japanese food.

I love the Sushi Happy Hour! I've had great service here and the sushi is always delicious. I haven't tried anything other than the sushi and appetizers but I have a thumbs up on the happy hour!

The waitress recommended the crisp & soft noodle with tofu. I love yellow curries and this was a little different, but the perfect mix of curry and coconut. I never finish a whole dish, but couldn't stop eating this. Yum. Also reasonably priced. I will definitely try it again and next time will eat in as it looked like a nice inside.

The only place I will eat sushi in Evanston. The service is super great and the menu is not strictly Japanese, but everything is good and you can eat here for about $10 on average. Also, I love their green tea ice cream, it's more creamy instead of frozen. update 01.12.2006: no longer the only place I will eat sushi in Evanston, see yelp.com/biz/swqKo2cflbK… also, they remodeled, and the seating is much more comfortable now

Hmmm - Maybe we should try it again. The last time we went they were out of all but two kinds of sushi and the sushi chef confided that what they did have wasn't all that fresh. We were VERY grateful for the heads up - but not sure what to make of it. I reluctantly ordered the salmon teriyaki (having been assured that the cooked fish was just fine - but I couldn't stop thinking that's like using bad wine to cook with - will it taste any better hot than cold? The spouse ordered orange chicken that was a very one note composition, of mostly gooey breading on somewhat dry bites of chicken in a sticky sweet orange marmalade sauce. Both dishes were served with impeccably fresh and beautifully arranged shredded carrots, daikon, cucumbers and red cabbage. THAT was lovely and the Thai Iced Tea was delish. Staff was delightful and we wanted to like it more than we did. WARNING: it can be FREEZING at the window tables on a cold/windy day.

Had dinner with a friend two weeks ago, it was some twenty minutes before closing but they were cool about letting us stay and order food. Not the same case always, another time it was dead inside, so, they'd started closing up almost 20 min before their regular close time. This is a sushi cafe with bubble tea. Its never very crowded, seems like a family owned establishment. Nice place located on the corner of Dempster and Chicago, good for kids, groups or a date. The menu is sushi and favorite chinese menu items. The presentation of the different sushis were impressive, I thought. I'm not a sushi lover, but I thought the sushi was tasty. The prices on food and drink were very reasonable. We had Bubble tea shakes with sushi and honey garlic chicken. Shakes were good, pearls were tender. The chicken I'd expected to be garlicky, sweet and spicy, it was not. It was very sweet, not appealing to my tastebuds. Also sampled the pu pu platter, not too expensive and very yum. I'll definitly be back for sushi and a shake! Its a good spot, I hope they don't close. Check it out!

I have been going to Dozika frequently for months now. The staff is extremely friendly, and the food is delicious. They have plenty of vegetarian options, almost everything can be made using beef, chicken, tofu, or simply just vegetable. Their Bubble Tea Lattes are really awesome. The are milky, creamy, sweet, fruity, and just delicious. On occasion I have gotten the same thing for a couple weeks and the vegetables they use vary somewhat so you know they are trying to work with what is fresh. Once or twice I have gotten something that I normally get, but just isn't as good as normal, and that was disappointing. Overall Dozika is consistent and delicious. The only drawback is that the price for portions is a bit more than other restaurants, but it always ends up being worth it.

I like Dozika for a number of reasons. They have booths, a great kids menu, and unfiltered sake. The service is good and the food is good and consistent. I agree with one previous reviewer that it is a great "go-to" sushi place. I have been here so many times! I have also seen a sign in the window lately that they are having a discount maki happy hour which is such a great idea b/c money is tight and honestly that's why I haven't been there in a while.

Nice little neighborhood place. The sushi has always been very fresh and super affordable. The salmon never disappoints and the creative presentation of the rolls makes it a nice place to take company. But I wouldn't recommend the Thai dishes. They just aren't very Thai and I tend to feel frustrated and unsatisfied. But if you stick to the sashimi and sushi you're good to go. Service is always friendly and there isn't usually a wait

I'm wondering if the other reviewers and I ate from the same place. The Nigiri sushi I got was of the it had been sitting out 2 or 3 days before they got around to serving it variety. The pieces were also small. Perhaps the other review is the sort of person who thinks rolls of fried stuff with mayo on it is sushi... Me I used to live in Japan, and I found this sushi to be barely edible. Its yet another of those Thai places that serves up sushi with no real appreciation of it as a culinary delight.

I tried just about every restaurant within one mile of my apartment. Dozika, however, never appealed to me. I am not a fan of asian fusion, as I believe a restaurant should specialize in one region, country, or style. After all, don't most of us want authentic food? In any case, I had a coupon for Dozika from the back of a Jewel-Osco receipt. I've been craving noodles lately, so I went here for a late lunch. Unfortunately, there were very few dishes on the menu that were vegetarian-friendly. The waitress told me that most of the dishes (including the lunch special options) had oyster sauce in them. Fish sauce can't be omitted from their Pad Thai too. TOTAL bummer! Anyway, I had the yakisoba and my boyfriend had the yellow curry (which may have had fish sauce in it). The food was very average, overall. I won't return to Dozika, as there are other restaurants that offer vegetarian-friendly Asian fare.

I love this place! The best vegetarian sushi around (although the now defunct Tom Yum renamed Ta Tong is excellent as well)! Great atmosohere and lovely owners! I have had large paries in here before and they do a good job of managing us! They used to give us beautiful hand carved chopsticks but alas no more. In the winter time there is nothing and I mean nothing like their ginger tea! And in the summer time the home-made ginger ale is refreshing - so much so you don't even want to doctor it up with a shot of vodka!

  • Sydney V.

Love, love, love this restaurant! The pad thai is excellent and much less greasy than most restaurants in Chicago. The yellow curry and ginger dishes are also delicious. They have discount specials every night of the week and the lunch specials are very inexpensive and more food than I can eat in one sitting.

I used to live next to this place and couldn't help but go several times a week. The sushi is always fresh, and while not overly creative - it is very good. They also offer other panasian dishes for the non-sushi eater. I recommend their pad thai - it's delicious!

"Pan Asian" food that is inexpensive but still costs a little more than its worth. The food is pretty good and I could see the appeal for cash-strapped college kids. I haven't had anything that tasted bad, but if you are really particular about your Japanese food, you may want to walk a couple of yards to Sea Ranch Fish Market. If you're with a large group of people with varied palettes necessitating a lot of options, Dozika can be your pale stand-by while Joy Yee's is under construction.

  • Jenny F.

Never had the volcano roll but I always take the tuna lover and spring roll. Quite tasty in a nice, cozy setting. I go there every couple of weeks with my wife. I also like the green tea with pomegranate juice there.

Yum. The place is a little expensive but well worth it. I don't do sushi but have several other things here I like to get. Best chicken fried rice ever.

    (4)
  • David S.

  • Natalie B.

Maybe.
