Ward Eight

Checking in again over a year later. While most places in the course of a year can really jump the shark, Ward 8 is still banging it out. Their classic cocktails are still superb. Still in my book the very best Old Fashioned and Manhattan in Chicago. Cody and Andres are such craftsman that all you have to give them is a base spirit and maybe 1 other descriptor and they can customize a cocktail that is sure to please. I recently went in and asked for a cocktail with Orgeat syrup and Bourbon and they concocted this amazing drink that was a cross between a Tiki drink and a mint Julep. Superb. And for the Whiskey buffs they have an exceptionally well curated selection of fine Whiskies. For the bourbons they ETL, Barterhouse, Weller 12, 1792 and a bunch of other very great Bourbons, and they select some of the best International Whiskies like those from Japan. The Nikka line of products including the Taketsuru 12 and the Yoichi 12 are both featured, as well as several other Scotches and ryes. All at an incredibly great price. I'm so looking forward to the summer when their patios open and they get live music going again (hopefully). If you haven't been here its a must visit
I went to Ward Eight after dinner for my cousin's birthday. It's a cocktail lounge, kinda small of a space with a small open kitchen but HUGE flavors in their cocktail drinks. It was a bit crowded on a late Saturday night, but the decor and vibe was a hipster feel. The place is pretty dark so if you're looking at a menu you will have to be like me, turn on that flashlight cell phone please. There's no TV here, however there was some background music. This is truly a lounge place to force you to talk to your peeps. In the middle of the place, there is a long top table for standing only, but you can put your foot on a metal bar across the bottom of it. But no fret, there are enough seating lounge areas on the sides of the room benched tables and compfy lounge chairs. Up front, you can also sit by the full view window. There are also comfy bar stools along the bar as too. They have premium shelf liquor for their mix drinks or on the rocks. You'll be paying about $10 a drink but you won't be disappointed. They do serve beer here but why get that, you got to try their cocktails. They make them strong and really tasty. As I watched the bartender mix our drinks, he looked like more of a mixologist. He was very entertaining measuring drinks, lighting things up, shaking things up. I ordered my go to cocktail Moscow Mule and hubby ordered one of their signature drink called the Doctor. Mine came is a copper mug (SWEET) with beautiful cubed ice. I mean squared ice cubes topped with a bunch of fresh mint! It was so well made I'd get it again for $10 bucks! Hubby's "Doctor" cocktail drink was made out of Jamaican Rum, Swedish Punsch, and fresh lime shaken like crazy until poured into a small glass that formed a beautiful foam on top. It's a pretty strong drink, more of a sipping drink if you chug it you'll really need to see a doctor in the house. Someone bought the birthday boy a special drink called a Scorpion Bowl. It was a designed scorpion bowl that was holding a flamed lime. I'm not kidding a flamed drink to drink! I didn't try it, but it looked like it had fresh citrus in it and my cousin said it was good and strong. I enjoyed hanging out by the bar to watch them make all kinds of drinks and oh yeah to also sit too, lol! I even saw one guy used like a perfume spray that smelled like citrus as a final touch to one of their cocktails...impressive. One kewl thing that happened that night was the owners/managers who heard there were so may birthday celebrants in the place they ended up giving everyone a round of shots and announced everyone to sing happy birthday which was a nice touch. They also serve some appetizers for snacking. My other cousin ordered their baked dates with gorgonzola cheese, bacon crumbs and micro greens on top of strips of prosciutto with a reduction balsamic glaze. It was ok, but I prefer my typical bacon wrapped dates any day. Overall, I'd come back here again if I'm in the area and try their other signature drinks.
Five billion stars! What a gem hidden in a not-so-good part of Evanston. Don't let the shuttered businesses on the block and cop cars roaming up at down the street dissuade you from coming in here. The drinks are top-notch--everything I've had has been fantastic, with my current favorite being the brandy alexander. The food is quite good as well. My only gripe is that Ward Eight is becoming more popular. I liked having it all to myself!

Just Turkey - Evanston

Lip smacking good bbq turkey tips and turkey ribs. Essentially taking healthier turkey loading it up with sweet sauce and fries. It tastes great. Turkey burger rocked too. Very friendly helpful staff at counter. Everything is finished to order. It ain't Thanksgiving but it is good stuff.
Their turkey dishes are so spicy and tasty, they don't even taste like turkey--they taste much better! The jerk burger and tips are truly awesome!! Limited seating so I mostly do takeout.
Great food! And a decent price, I ordered tips and link. Tips were very good... Just slightly , barely a little dry but still juicy. The link was huge, I saved it for my next nights dinner. The one thing that made this very good though was the sauce, very very good. Spicy enough to give a kick but not uncomfortable at all. Sauce was probably the best I had tasted.

Excellent argentine-style ice cream. I recommend the Dulce de Leche flavor. The service is really good!! :)
This place is amazing! They make everything by hand, so the product is delicious and fresh. Highly recommended!
Totally delicious. The dulce de leche was wonderful. This was the best "ice cream" I've ever had. Can't wait to go back!

Tag’s Bakery

growing up only a few blocks from tag's, walking here on a saturday morning for a freshly baked donut was tradition. nothing can beat their cake donut with chocolate frosting (and yes, i am drooling right now). oh wait, then there's their smiley face cookies, and tarts, and cakes, and butter cookies and and and....yeah. everything in here is ridiculously delicious. whenever my mom makes a trip to see me, she always shows up with the little white box with the red/white string tied around it. no matter what's inside leads to instant happiness.
I was able to pick up a last-minute birthday cake the same day I needed it for a reasonable price. It was delicious and the birthday boy was impressed with the amount of flavor it packed! Highly recommend for an affordable alternative to your run-of-the-mill grocery store sheet cake. If you're looking for a large cake (sheet cake size) you'll definitely need to call a day or two ahead of time.
OH--I must correct myself on the scones. Yesterday they sold me a killer cinnamon scone. It was supposed to be today's breakfast, but once I nibbled a little corner, my will crumbled (haha), and I devoured it on the drive home. Tag's continues to be eminently reliable for cookies, especially the chocolate-chip and fun decorated varieties. I wish that they would discount their doughnuts after 5pm, since that's when I'm usually there, and they are understandably stale by then. I wonder what happens to the leftover doughnuts after closing time. Maybe I will hang out behind the store next time to find out.

4.5 is certainly okay if combining food, atmosphere, and service. I give 4 for which I had: Diver scallop: soft and juicy. Slightly salted with a hint of sea smell. Carpaccio: nicely divided into portions for the table, and the carpaccio is just amazing! Tagliatelle: the sauce is full of mushroomy flavor, must try if you love mushrooms; Roasted duck: crispy outside tender and juicy inside, what can I say? GET! Lamb: my friend had it and I tried a piece. Did not ask for a second piece. Do you get it?:"P
I had the mushroom pasta and my partner had the penne. The pens tasted like a margarita pizza. Good but not special. My dish was better. Not a huge menu but that was ok. Dishes starting around 18$. Great bread. Butter served hard but still good. Limited beer options. I had red wine. 12-14$/glass. Got free street parking after 6p I believe.
Great restaurant! We came here over the weekend and had a great experience. We were promptly seated for our 8pm reservation (a must for weekends) and had great service, drinks and food. We began with bruschetta and diver scallops, both dishes were great. I would have liked to try the carpaccio (sounded great) but it was a little too adventuresome for some of our group. For dinner we had bolognese, linguini and the NY strip special. All of the dishes were really tasty, my husband commented that the bolognese was the best he had ever had. For dessert we split the toffee cake and the strawberry panna cotta, each was really tasty. Overall a really great experience and I'm glad we were able to bring my husband's parents here, everyone was happy with their meals and it was really great to spend time with them and catch up.
