I don't often find myself in Edwardsville, but I had to journey to the Madison County Building yesterday to fight a speeding ticket (damn you, photo enforcement vans!). After two and a half hours in a courtroom, I needed some caffeine to fuel my trip back to St. Louis. I walked outside and spotted Sacred Grounds a few buildings down. I had been there once before two years ago when visiting a friend at SIU-E, and it left a good impression, so I popped in, paying closer attention this time. The decor inside manages to be simultaneously spare and cozy. As Josh Y points out, the owners have forgone leather couches and big comfy chairs in favor of simple wooden tables and chairs, but the place still seems warm and welcoming. The baristas and bakers were as friendly and helpful as anyone could ask. It may not be the best venue for an all-day study session, but it served my purposes just fine. Furnishings aside, the menu at Sacred Grounds could sustain even the sleepiest, stress-hungriest student. I opted for a "shot in the dark," which is a mug containing a shot of freshly brewed espresso, topped off with black coffee. Caffeine bliss. I also had a sweet potato cake, which was moist and well spiced. The frosting, which I'm guessing was cream cheese frosting with some whipped sweet potato mixed in, was a tasty touch. St. Louis has its share of great coffeehouses, but I left feeling just a little sad that this place couldn't be in my regular coffee lineup.

Sacred Grounds is one of my favorite coffee shops in the St. Louis area. Located in downtown Edwardsville, IL, this place can sometimes cater to the college crowd, but can also be one of the best places to sit and think, write yelp reviews, or enjoy a good book. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that if you go to Sacred Grounds more than once, they'll remember your drink order. This cafe also offers a wide selection of vegetarian and omnivorous options, as well as some great sweets. Everything is reasonable priced. Sacred Grounds also features a rotating art wall where you can admire some local talent while you enjoy your chai latte and pumpkin bread.

My five stars are placing this coffee shop in the context of Edwardsville. I grew up in and dearly love Edwardsville, so don't take that as a condescension, please: what I mean is, this is the best coffee shop in Edwardsville, though I could wish for a few things to be different. There are several good places to eat in town, but not many good coffee shops. (222 actually counts now that they have grudgingly decided to have seating, but Sacred Grounds was already right on the mark.) This is an excellent coffee-and-baked-treat place, or brunch or lunch place, or hangout place. I think the menu is actually ovo-lacto-vegetarian, but my very-non-vegetarian-senior-citizen parents and their similar-profile friends go there every Sunday--religiously, if you will--after church for brunch, and they don't seem to care a bit that there is no bacon or sausage. Why would they? The food is fresh, creative, pleasant, and filling. My kids love the waffles and pancakes with fruit and nuts, and I love the quiches and eggy-veggy-cheesy dishes. It's not ideal for a big group, though. I wish they owned more forks and cups, and I wish they had more seating so there was room for everything on the table and so we wouldn't always feel a bit guilty when there are more than four of us together. We scooch tables together and nobody complains, but still. The baked goods range from good to stellar, with sweet potato cake being heavenly almost all the time, and the apricot pound cake amazing when it's fresh (beware of slight staleness if you go at night--these are actual baked goods made from actual food ingredients, which means that they can in fact get stale when they've been out awhile). The scones--hooray for the whole-wheat ones!--have been absolutely delicious every single time I've had them. And the coffee is great: We always buy a pound of whole-bean Jen's Blend to take with us, and that's all we drink at home when we're in Edwardsville.

Great latte in nice location. Dropped by on way to Peoria As good a latte as on can find. Looked like a few nice restaurants nearby

I go to Sacred at least once a week, I'd say. It's the perfect atmosphere. They have abandoned pretension for the sake of just having a place where people can hang out, read a book, pick at the guitar, play a game, drink a cup of coffee and talk to one another. No wireless internet, not too many fancy drinks, no leather couches. Just good coffee, in normal mugs and really good food. I love that you usually recognize a face or two. I also love that they cycle in and out different brews of coffee, and local artwork for that matter. Their baked goods are delicious (particularly the ganache bars and scones) and breakfast always makes my mouth water, even though I have yet to try it. Oh, but I will. My only gripe is that if you go in 45 minutes before closing, the coffee is 100% cold, but hey- that's to be expected and I keep going back b/c I just love it. It is far better than the alternatives in town - (Starbucks and Borders)

Great place, nice ambiance, the only thing is all the coffee taste like it has dish soap added.

Love this place. I usually just get a coffee to go in the mornings, but occasionally get a piece of pumpkin bread or a brownie to take to work. I need to make it back in soon for lunch. Love the atmosphere. I've heard that they have free wi-fi, you just have to ask for the password.

My favorite part about Sacred Grounds is the kitchen staff, particularly the bakers who make some pretty fine vegan muffins and scones. Sometimes I catch them walking around with mixing bowls and I wonder what warm fluffiness will come out next. I, however, miss some of the amenities of a standard coffee shop. Give me internet. Give me more power outlets. Give me sofas and easy chairs to get comfy in and read my book. Give me menu options that will actually fill me up. Perhaps I sound like a big fatty American....but why not offer what people expect, and let those who like moments without wifi and hard wooden chairs to choose that option if they prefer?

I can't give it ANY stars! I went there last sunday and we walked in at 10:50 am -it was uncrowded but there were a few tables waiting for food. We were a party of four and in one hour WE HAD RECEIVED NO FOOD and no one seemed to care! It was crazy -- we had ordered quiche which should be just cut and served. When we asked about the food, we were told it would be another 15 minutes! We walked out - they would NOT refund the money for the coffee that I drank while waiting. Will NEVER go back. It seemed as if teenagers were working except for the guy who took our orders and refunded our money the others were incompetent. CJ

I've seen multiple reviews that say Sacred Grounds doesn't have Wi-Fi, well, I'm happy to report that I was there last week and they do now. I simply had to ask the guy at the counter for the password.

This was the first cafe I ever had a "real" coffee drink: raspberry mocha. These days I don't really like that drink, but Sacred Grounds turned me onto other tasty sips. Whenever I'm back in town I enjoy stopping in and grabbing a cup of joe.

I went to Sacred Grounds about a week ago and was very impressed. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out so we drove 35 minutes up to Edwardsville. The drive was definitely worth it. When we got there, we were immediately greeted by a helpful and laid-back man at the register. He informed us of some great drinks and menu items to order. I decided on the Eggplant panini and chai latte while my boyfriend chose the Sicilian panini and a coconut red tea. Both sandwiches were bursting with flavor and very delicious. After our meal, I ordered an apricot cake and grape walnut scone to go. The apricot cake was moist and wonderful while the scone was rather dry and tasted of purely flour. All in all, I would love to return but may not be able to as much as I'd like due to long distance.

The honey nut latte is amazing! Have had their paninis before and theyre quite delicious especially for vegetarian. Their chocolate truffle cookie is to die for too! We go there all the time with friends and love the atmosphere. They always have local artists on the wall and a diverse artsy crowd.

First, a disclaimer: I've been going to Sacred Grounds (or "Sacred", as it's called by many in the local vernacular) for years. Maybe this will have no hope of sounding impartial, or maybe it will. Take that for what it's worth. Here goes: In travels across the country, I have never found a coffee shop that combines the comfort, friendly atmosphere, ambiance, vegetarian food selection (it's great, and I'm not even a vegetarian), quality and consistency of coffee drinks, local flair, and passion for good community causes that you can find at Sacred Grounds in Edwardsville. I looked back at old digital photo albums to try to figure out, if I could, when I started to go to Sacred, or when it may have opened. I got as far back as 2000 and 2001 and had some early photos of me and friends there on Wednesday nights, drinking coffee or Jones soda and playing poker or Trivial Pursuit (there's a good selection of board and other games available at Sacred for patrons to use during their visit.) I had some pictures there with ex-girlfriends and some old sketches that I made on trips there by myself. There was a time when I would be there almost every night. Again, the comfort factor is what draws in the regulars and makes it a sort of "Cheers" for metro-east caffeine addicts. When I met my now-wife back in '02, we immediately started going there a few nights a week to talk, relax, unwind, enjoy the environment, and share some drinks and baked goods. And to this day, we're still frequently there with our young son for Sunday brunch (don't miss the chance to catch the brunch on Saturdays or Sunday mornings.) Sacred carries the standard menu of coffee and tea drinks of any good coffee shop. It also has a huge assortment of niche sodas, juices, and other bottled drinks for the non-caffeinated crowd. The nice-sized glass case of baked goods are outstanding - my personal favorite is the pumpkin bread. And through lunchtime and the evening, don't miss the chance to try one of the grilled sandwiches (the Sicilian rocks!) or paninis or soups of the day. And, again, the weekend morning brunch has a different menu each weekend but is always outstanding - and you can never go wrong with the vegi-Mex brunch option offered each weekend. Goodness knows when they open (I don't think I'm up that early), but they close nightly at 11 PM. There's no Wi-Fi, which is actually a nice thing even thought I'm a wired 24/7 kind of guy, since it creates a less modern, less hectic kind of environment. Sure, people are always there with laptop computers, but there's no Internet access available onsite. The art on the wall is coordinated by the local art council, features a local artist each month, and changes out once a month, normally the weekend mid-month. The only downsides: During or just after busy times, it may be hard to find a clean table (or, if you find one that's empty, you may be inclined to ask the staff to wipe it, or to just lend you a wet rag to wipe it yourself.) Sometimes during the weekend rush, it can take more than a few minutes to get your food, but it's cooked to order and well worth the wait. Patience is a virtue we could all use some more of nowadays. So stop by, grab a cup of joe, and introduce yourself to one of the regulars. I've never had a disappointing conversation here, and no one bites. Cheers!

As a commuter student, Sacred is my go to place to grab lunch when I either forgot mine at home or simply didn't bring one. The prices here are so low it's insane! I get a full sandwich, whole salad, and tea for under ten bucks. Food is pretty good, too. The menu items are pretty simple and all vegetarian (thank you!). Coffee is pretty decent and there's a nice tea selection. I've never had anything here that was absolutely amazing, but for the prices, everything's pretty dang good. The staff are very kind and I always enjoy making conversation with them. A very laid back and quiet atmosphere make a great place to enjoy some coffee and a book or do homework.

An authentic, funky coffee shop in the old time coffeehouse tradition. None of the ho-hum antiseptic atmospheres of the coffee shop chains. They do their own baking, and it shows. Their pastries indicate that the person doing the baking knows how to do it. Pastries are not the over sweetened, mediocre offerings of the mass market. Good vegetarian dishes for lunch---try the felafel. Interesting clientele of students, SIU faculty, and drop ins. I don't think their lattes can be beat. Try it, you'll enjoy the experience.

The cook, who looks like she has been smoking crack for 20 years, messed my order up. I quietly walked up and asked the cashier if he could fix it. The cook stormed out, yelled at me, and said that she was going to make me a new one and I would be lucky if she didn't poop in it! Haha! Then she proceeded to tell me about how offended she was and that she had been cooking for a long time; so I apologized and tried not to laugh. She was arrogant and rude, but it was funny so I'll let it go. They make a great latte and usually have good food when the crack head isn't working. I have changed my review from 5 stars to 1 because it is absolutely ridiculous to treat customers like that :)

Great place for a delicious pick-me-up. The oatmeal cake may look modest but its flavor is anything but. Moist and just the right amount of sweetness. Highly recommended! Thankfully, the portion size isn't modest.

If you're in a hurry, this is not recommended, one of the things I like about Sacred Grounds. The food is made fresh in the kitchen. They use beans from a local source roasted fresh. Service is friendly and tables kept clean. Local artist on display rotating works frequently. The prices are very reasonable. I always leave feeling satisfied. The coffee and espresso are above average, always good and sometimes great. The muffins are to die for. Five stars for the laid back atmosphere.

I came here with a friend after a nice relaxing day of yarn shopping. With sooo many dietary restrictions, I was disappointed with this place. I wanted something to snack on. They didn't have the ingredient list for the only vegan item they had. Not cool in my book. I can't eat flax & wanted to see if the item in question had flax in it. What eating establishment doesn't have ingredient lists for everything they serve to people????? The ambience was awesome. Umm, the next time I'm here I'll do what I did last time which is to only get something to drink.

I really enjoy the weekend brunch that Sacred serves each Saturday and Sunday until 1PM. I usually grab a good book, head in, and order whatever the brunch special is for the day. This cafe is completely vegetarian, but meat-lovers should not run away...the food is delicious! This morning I enjoy the breakfast burrito which had delicious scrambled eggs, cheese, and black beans cooked in a wheat tortilla with sides of salsa and sour cream. The food was delicious. The best way to judge a coffee shop is by its brewed coffee. I purchased the bottomless cup of coffee for a mere $2.50 (a real deal!) I of course tried my favorite brew which is the Highlander's Grogg, a Kaldi's Coffee Roast blend. It was brewed well and was delicious as well. My one complaint is that I wish they offered bigger water glasses. If you want water then you will be drinking out of a shot glass and will need to refill it after every swig. Bigger glasses would definitely help the food go down!

Very good coffee is the rule here, rivaled in E'ville only by Artisan 222's Goshen Coffee. At Sacred Grounds, they serve "Mississippi Mud" brand, like you find at The Mud House, STL. Across the street at Artisan 222, they serve "Goshen Coffee," also found at Pi, STL. Hmmm, I smell a bout brewing between "champion" and "challenger," a java-tasting "Thrillah-in-E'villah." But before I schedule that, more on today's sandwich, the Sicilian Panini: portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil pesto. I opened it up to see it was made with care. The veggies were clean, carefully sliced, included beautiful ripe tomato, with a modest amount of pesto (if I ordered it again, I think I'd ask for more). The sourdough was a little soft for me, but grilled up with beautiful griddle marks, which may be the reason they use it. There's a pleasant quirky quality to Sacred Grounds that contributes to its appeal. For instance, today's order was identified not by a number or my name, but instead by a pair of green binoculars that I was given to place on my table. Other reviewers have noted the art displays and live music. If you're looking for local culture to supplement your coffee, choose Sacred Grounds.

I've been going to Sacred Grounds for several years now. It has a great atmosphere: there is a wall that regularly rotates artwork from local artists, great coffee, a baked goods case with some really good cake slices and (the pumpkin bread and ganoche are two of my favorites)

The cafe draws attentions of a much younger crowd. Their coffee is decent, but not the best I've ever had. I'm not a huge fan of the service - it's always typically slow. I don't think the workers are actually used to waiting on people, because it really seems like most of the people that visit will order a single cup of coffee and just hang around and talk for hours. Not much service required. Very hipster as well. I recall asking for a chicken quesadilla once, and the man behind the counter gave me this really dirty look and informed me that they didn't serve meat and everything was completely vegetarian. It was like he suddenly hated me because I eat meat.

Love this place. I don't know why I haven't written a review before as I have been here lots of times. It's the default place to meet someone when going into Edwardsville. Every sandwich I've had is good and always well made and the desserts (baked goods in general)... some of the best anywhere as far as I am concerned. I can never pass them up. No meat served here and you would never miss it. Go here! Cool comfortable space (but no Internet I think) and plenty of parking (there is the street and a lot right across the street).

Quirky and quaint are two adjectives I always seek to find in a coffee shop and Sacred Grounds certainly doesn't disappoint! The laid back, quiet atmosphere as soon as you walk in door sets the mood for the whole place. You can grab a GREAT cup of coffee and a vegetarian entree if you are looking for something to fill you up! If you aren't feeling up to dinner even their baked goods don't disappoint. Settle in with a good book or a magazine and you are set for hours! I always find myself seeking this place out for a study sanctuary. The only downfalls are no Free Wi-Fi (a definite must for a coffee shop) and the hours are really odd

They got new tables, chairs, and refinished the wood floors since my original review. Great coffee, second only to Artisan 222. Nice baked goods and I really like their weekend breakfast plates. The vegetarian biscuits and gravy are awesome! Consider sharing a plate - the servings are usually quite large.

Good coffee, great baked goods, dirty bathroom. So I struggled with giving this place a rating, but I knocked it down for the condition of the bathroom. Gross! Even the soap dispenser was dirty! Needs a good scrubbin' in there! Moving on: I got a latte and it was very good. However, the star of my experience here was the biscotti (we got both the chocolate and white chocolate almond) Both very good. I also got the...I think it was called a dream bar. It was graham cracker, chocolatey, coconutty, gooey delicious! Highly recommend. All in all, I would definitely go here again, but I would make it a point not to use the restroom!

Laid-back vibe, rotating art installations, and great coffee and tea drinks. The staff are friendly and and knowledgeable about coffee/tea drinks and the local area. I haven't had a meal here, but the desserts are delicious.

I've been going here for 10 years now. I really enjoyed this place when it first opened. They had the most amazing olive pesto.. alas they haven't carried that for probably eight years now, lol. They've gone through some great help and some bad help as every business does. Its consistently good coffee and realllly great grilled cheese! The worst thing about this place is unfortunately some of the "regulars." Don't get me wrong, theres plenty of friendly patrons and 90% of the people are great, but there are those obnoxious, territorial regulars who tend to know how to bring a place down. Also it can get full of loud tweens and younger teenagers on weekend nights. Avoid at crowded hours and you'll have a much more pleasant experience.

good coffee. good service. good place just to be. What more could you want? It's affordable, and casual. Located mid-college town, it is Starbucks only better for college kids to go and do homework, relax, and or socialize.

I'm a huge fan of Sacred Grounds. It's a Coffee Shop done right! From it's delicious bakery items, from one of my person favorite cheese quesadillas of all times, and the endless amount of board games to play. It's a very cozy atmosphere with brick wall on one side, and the other side covered in art and beautiful wood floors and furniture. I highly recommend this place and absolutely love taking new friends that don't know much about Edwardsville here.

The selection they offer given its such a small place is incredible. For me, coffee is coffee so I personally don't notice a difference at places I go to. Where they do stand out for me is their desserts/affordability of their items. And actually their food is really good as well. Huge fan.

  • Anna W.

The staff here is very welcoming. My aunt and I ordered the Portabella Quesadillas. While we waited for the order to come out, we sat and admired the decor. I loved the patchwork bike poster and the exposed brick walls. The food took a while to get out, but when it finally did, it was delicious and hot! It came with salsa and sour cream. I wish I could come more often!

Best little spot in the Metro East for filling your belly and whiling away a few hours on your laptop or in conversation. And really a good destination spot for any vegan in the area, period. The food is simple and wholesome and tasty. Ohgawd, the vegan muffins are the BEST too. One star ding just because I called a while ago to see what kind of vegan breakfast/brunch items they serve and they said they didn't have anything that day. Wait, what? You're listed as a vegan (or at least vegan-friendly) restaurant. Also, charging for soy milk is kinda 1999. Other than these fairly minor infractions, Sacred Grounds is fantastic. I've been popping in whenever I'm in the area since 2007, and it's been a consistently good, friendly, laid-back lunch and coffee spot. And seriously--THOSE MUFFINS. :D

Fun place to have a coffee and see some local art fare. Hippies seem to run the joint which is how I like my coffee shops. They have a limited menu but all food is prepared fresh. Lots of yummy pastries to try (pecan bars) are my favorite. They usually have 3-4 brewed coffees to choose from and a wide variety of beans they will grind to your liking.

Walking into Sacred Grounds I always assume I'm going to be overpowered by the smell of patchouli. This makes the smell of coffee and pastries all the more pleasant. SG sells vegetarian/vegan fare at a good price. The sandwiches/paninis are great for a light lunch in downtown Edwardsville, and the drinks are always pretty good. However, for a "coffee shop" the coffee isn't very good. It isn't bad per se, but I've always found it rather bland (and at worst, lukewarm) even though there are 3-4 varieties available. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is enjoyable for a small group or sitting solo and reading/working. Basically, even with the unimpressive coffee, everything else makes Sacred Ground the best place to read or work during the afternoon.

  • Morgan W.

I really miss this coffee shop. First things first, they actually have good coffee. They always have more than one to choose from, and a couple of refill options in case you only feel like a cup or two (as opposed to the 10-12 that I regularly lived on while in college). Second, this place has baked goods like you would not believe. Everything is good, but the Sweet Potato Cake is especially delicious. Third, the food is also delicious...this is a trait that can be hit or miss at most coffee shops. Sacred Grounds is as much a great lunch establishment as it is a place to get a good beverage. Forth, it is stupidly affordable (especially compared to DC prices). My mom and I got two cups of coffee, two salads and two desserts for $13. For those of you keeping track, that is way cheaper than a two-person meal at Chipotle, and it's probably better for you as well. It does fill up with the overdramatic teen crowd on the weekends, but honestly...they can't go to bars, so where else are they going to hang out?
