I brought a party of six to the Sanctuary for dinner and drinks. The locals gave decent reviews, so we took a gamble and tried the place for ourselves. We were told our party of 6 would have to share one small bar table or sit on the upper level. The waitress sat us and left the table. We were not offered menus, and had to request them when she came back 15 minutes later. Our server actually seemed annoyed that we were ordering food, at 8:30pm. With such awful service, mediocre food, and an atmosphere that was nothing special, the locals can keep this place. We "visitors" won't be returning.

Very nice bar and setup. The food is fantastic. It's a Hawks fan bar for sure. Good wings and great service. Someone clogged the toilet.

Great tavern with great food .Specials throughout the week and a friendly no B.S bar Staff are on the ball and attentive without being pushy Owners are always around to insure good service

Really nice set up. The bar seems pretty clean. The food is decent but the service is bad. I won't be going back.

I come here pretty frequently I enjoy it most of the time, but I really wish this place would stop trying to be something it a not! Enough with the music so loud it's impossible to have a conversation! This is a fairly small sports bar, that would be much more enjoyable if I didn't have to scream every time I want to talk! Also for whatever reason the waitress had told us that she was off and that we would have to go to the bar for drinks, which I don't mind doing, but every other table but ours was being waited on?? Like I mentioned I do not mind coming here, but all of these things are really making it hard for me to come back!

Surprisingly nice find - nice dinner, nice place, nice service, nice beer selection, very comfortable, clean bathrooms! Went back the next night - they had live music, and was not disappointed. Hope to come here more regularly

This place is really modern and kind of reminds me of bars in downtown Chicago. It has a couple of different levels and the whole place is really open and has a lofty feel to it. My only problem is all the Cubs paraphernalia hanging on the walls. Boo!!! The waitress was really friendly and always there if we needed anything (even though she was wearing a Cubs shirt). My friend and I ordered the chopped salad and it came sans avocado (on the menu it states that it comes on the salad) with tons of lettuce and not much else. Also, the dressing tasted off - like it was expired or something. We sent both salads back and the waitress took them off our bill. My husbands bacon burger ($12) looked really good though. $8 buckets! Free chips!

To be honest, Erin L's review kind of sums it up. I also had the chopped salad and found it to be disappointing. And hey, sometimes it happens. Unfortunately, we were there so late that by the time we spoke up about the salads, the kitchen staff was leaving so ordering something else was pointless. I will state this -- the salad was kind of awful - but everyone else enjoyed their meals and the free chips were amazing. I have high hopes that my salad adventure was a fluke. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I did enjoy the very open, unique layout. It took some seriously great planning to make three levels feel like one cohesive bar. I didn't feel like we were in a room or on another floor. It felt like one solid space that was broken up in a creative way. Kudos to the architect.

I'm updating this review after a second visit. A star was lost. What a great addition to Brookfield! A nice sports bar with okay food. The burger is great but I had the chicken quesadillas on the second visit and they were, I dunno, they just didn't taste right. A friend of mine had the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and he said it was alright. Nothing great. However, The beer selection is great. There was no whiff of danger like some other Brookfield bars. They have TV's but the bar has three sections; an upper level, the main level, and lower level. You don't feel like the TV's are attacking you from all sides or are even the main attraction here. The look of the bar is nice too. It has exposed brick and dark wood. It looks like something like an upscale bar in a mid-sized. college town. The menu is pretty limited but it is a good spot in downtown Brookfield. Give it a shot.

Went in here tonight after waiting for months for it to open. It was busy but not wall to wall people which is a plus. I am glad to see new establishments coming to Brookfield. Our experience was okay the bar tender took a longer then average time to help us and I had to order the drinks 3 times before she understood them, she also didn't know the cost of the drinks and had to ask another bar tender. After one round they were out of Budlight so we ordered 312 that also ran out after 1 round, switched to Point which was $4.5 which is really high for a craft beer. I am hoping that the shortage was caused by delivery issues because of the storm. We will go back again and I will update my post. I hope that the service is better next time because it's a nice looking place that clearly invested a lot of money into the building.

Came here for the first time last year with a friend after a ten mile race in freezing April weather. The bar wasn't open yet but the door was open so we walked in. The owner, Marty, didn't even mention that they weren't open yet and went ahead and served us some well deserved post-race beers. We hung out for a few hours chatting and having the run of all the tv's in the place on a early Saturday afternoon. I have been by several times after and have always enjoyed the place.

Great location! Very nice inside! Perfect place to watch a sporting event. However, food is just ok.....staff is sooooo slow and not knowledgeable about working at a bar. They need a lot of guidance in how to operate a bar! I would hate to see such a nice bar close due to stupidity!

I went here on Saturday night (2/26) and watched the Chicago Bulls game and had a number of beers. I thought the service was fine and I do like the free chips they provide. However, I would say around 8:30 or 9PM, they had the worst DJ come in and totally destroy what was an enjoyable evening. The music he was playing was from an 80's wedding and he was playing this music far too loud. We were at the opposite corner of where the DJ was set up, but it was unbearably loud. The Sanctuary is a neighborhood bar/tavern. Stick to that. Don't try and become a place you are not. That being said, the place is set up very nice and had plenty of TV options. Friendly staff. I will have to try the food here.

Beautiful bar horrible service. We went there on a Friday night at 10:30 and actually got a table for 13 of us. We thought ourselves lucky until the waitress only got five of the drinks correct (three of them being bottled beer.) How can you screw up a cranberry and vodka? Well you forget to put in the cranberry juice! My friend ordered a Jack and Coke and got a Captain and Coke twice! Never again

This place is growing on me as far as a nice, clean, friendly establishment to drink some delicious beers. We enjoyed a night of beer (lots of great beers on tap!) and had a really enjoyable night.

I went there on a Wednesday night for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised. The decor was quite nice with hardwood floors and an upstairs and downstairs sections. It is a lot bigger than what you would think from the outside. Lots of big screen TV s to watch sports. I thought the food was quite good. I had a reuben sandwich and my friend had the french dip. Portions are quite large and their homemade chips are great! Good beer selection too. They had locals come in for a "jam session" playing 60's and 70's oldies..which is right up my alley since I'm an "oldie" myself LOL! I would definitely recommend this place as a great neighborhood bar.

This place was seriously packed!!!! Everyone was waiting to watch the Blackhawks.... We were fortunate to get a table.... Good times.... There's like 12 in our group. We ordered lots of shots and beers Our server, Christina... was a little slow.... I mean she was busy and all.... But asking for water shouldn't take four times? My BF after the game ordered fried ravioli which was really yucky.... Even to drunk people it tasted meh.... My BF and I paid for our share of the bill ... $90... Not bad at all... For a round of Fireball shots... Couple of beers... And my cider.... Good place to hang out with a group. Love the set up of the bar.... Split level.... Lots of TV, modern rustic look and they have arcade too...

At first, rumors rumors rumors from many told me to try "Not Your Fathers Rootbeer". Just like root beer! Not even like drinking beer!! I was skeptical about that, having had other beers that were "JUST LIKE" whatever thing was in the name. I never agreed. This, though, lived up to the hype-- I finally tried it at World of Beer in Naperville. I was surprised... but I needed a place to find this near me! A random Yelp search somehow got me connected with the Santuary and that they had this elusive drink. It was months until I was able to get here too.... thankfully, with a quick FB message (thank you for the great service!!), I was able to confirm they still had the beer of my dreams. I went here with a friend, and I loved the set up! It has a slightly lower level, main level, and upper level. Each portion was visible from the door, so you know what your seating options were. The vibe is clean but hip (not hipster), with a late twenties and older crowd. Nice and relaxed. I would've given this 5 stars, had it not been for our waitress! I think she just didn't like us because we were females. She was very short with us, she asked us what we wanted, and when we hesitated a second (even tho we knew what we were there for) she said "i'll come back" and took off. She tossed a basket of free chips at us... It just didn't have a friendly approach. I would still go back. Their menu looked quite good... I mean, seriously... haven't you heard of the brookfield oysters?? haha... I'll be back soon.

They have updated a lot over the past year making it worthy of an extra star. Keep up the great work. Really like the new wine and beer offerings. Wednesdays during the summer is their classic car night. Bring out your classic and show it off. Chance for prizes for best in show.

Nice place to drink with a friend...came here on a Friday night and I love everything about it; Alex the server recommended great drinks. I have to say the service here is outstanding!

Delicious drinks! I love the taco specials. Yummy, well made and a great price. Fan of the burgers also. Wednesday night's during the summer include a car show on the street outside. Definitely a fantastic addition! Plenty of tvs and seats but it can get loud when the restaurant fills up with customers.

Yikes! I have now been twice and want to love this place. The set-up is sweet, and the second time around, the large windows were open and it was the perfect spot for an afternoon cocktail. Free chips, good drink prices, and they have Not Your Father's Rootbeer: score! I've only tried one thing, which was the chopped salad. The vinaigrette was mouthwatering, and the salad had the perfect amount of unhealthy bacon and creamy avocado. HOWEVER, service is my reason for the "yikes!" The first time, our server was so rushed that we barely could get in a word to order. The second time, I literally had to get out of my seat and walk up to the the counter and interrupt a waitress who was flirting with a bachelor party to retrieve my check. After five minutes, I had to walk back up and give her my credit card so I could pay my bill!! So frustrating. I can only hope the third time is the charm!!

Cute neighborhood bar in Brookfield, where "everybody knows your name". The drinks are priced quite fairly. They have Peroni Beer which I love and can't find anywhere else in Brookfield...so I can say I was a very happy camper. The chips are really good. The bartender was uber friendly. I lived on the northside of Chicago for a handful of years and I can tell you that Sanctuary reminds me of a trendy northside neighborhood bar. I really have missed that - so I would go back. I didn't eat but the food smelled amazing. They have drink and food specials which looked very appealing. I wish they had a drink menu - maybe a couple of trendy drinks they specialize in - I think it would make The Sanctuary super special - other than that - I had not one complaint..... Brookfield needs some super trendy local businesses. They need to keep it fresh.

Loved this place! Nice local bar in "downtown Brookfield"... Cute decor, average priced drinks, decent liquor selection, friendly and attentive staff.. Slot machines, plenty of seats/tables. The DJ last Friday night played 90's classics.. R&B and hip hop.... Lots of jams. Will be returning. ;)

Still a fan, but they REALLY need to up the beer cooler. The bottled beer is always too warm, so I have been ordering from the draft. Also, if you have a choice see the "punk" looking bartender with the partially shaved head. She makes amazing Bloody Marys and is the most attentive.

  • K S.

I enjoyed the decor. Nice layout. The service is kind of slow and the place wasnt even crowded. They did have live music nice but it made it hard to hear the person sitting next to you. Only stayed a couple of songs because they started 45 min late. The food was typical bar food. They have a few beers on draft and some decent bottled beers.

We always have a good time here. The Hard Root Beer is sooooo tasty and the music is always good. It's nice to have a local spot to hang out.

The Sanctuary is a great neighborhood joint in Brookfield! My husband and I live about 4 blocks away and feel it is a welcome sopt in the neigborhood. The atmosphere is really great too! Dark bar with exosed brick, you kind of feel like you are somewhere in the city. My husband and I ate at the Sanctuary on a random snowy Thursday nigth and were happy to see it was pretty crowded. I always think that butts in the seats of a restaurant is a great sign. Our server was really good and pretty attentive. We had the punk rocker chick who we have heard makes really good bloodies. Want to go back and try one soon! The food was good, its pretty much your standard bar food. We had wings (which were great but it's hard to screw up wings) and shared the chopped salad and patty melt. The chopped salad was pretty good but I wish they would have added some garlic and seasoning to the vinagrette. I asked for ranch after tasting it. The patty melt was also really good! A bit greasy, but it's a patty melt! What do you expect?! Overall I would recommend The Sanctuary. Its a great local joint and my hubby and I plan to go back to watch a game or for lunch or dinner sometime soon.

As a semi-regular of this place, I'm going to try to give a fair review. Overall, I love it. The atmosphere is perfect for me (I tend to like my bars on the dark side, and the exposed brick walls and black decor fit that nicely). They have a great selection of beers, with a regular rotation of new craft brews on tap. The food is good-to-great as well. The wings are especially good, as are the steak tacos on Thursdays. The only reason I'm knocking a star off is that the service varies greatly depending on who's working. For the most part, it's fine, but there's one bartender in particular who always seems like she'd rather be somewhere else. Still, on average, the good far outweighs the bad, and The Sanctuary is a great place to have a bite to eat, or just grab a beer.

  • Adam J.

Went last night. The food was very good. I had the Prime Rib sandwich which was better than expected. The service was a bit slow, but I think it's because many tables sat down at once and there was only one server. I thought the prices were fair. $20 for two large sandwich plates and two diet cokes. I don't know what similar places people go to where you can get out for cheaper. I also find it laughable that people order BURGERS and then complain that there's a Big Buck Hunter game. This place has great potential and I hope people support it to make it better

  • Patty H.

Odd when we first walked in...place was fairly empty and yet they asked us to sit at the high tabletops. We had two small children. Odd request but we agreed. Food was average. My husband and I had their burger. It was just OK. Kids had the grilled cheese and that was the best part. We started meal with the toasted ravioli. It was pretty dry. They had a list of beers on tap but none of them were actually on tap. There was a limited selection on tap. Service was just OK. Once again seemed odd because there were only 2 other tables. Not really sure I would visit again.

  • Kevin L.

Let's start with walking in... You walk in to a surprisingly cool environment. Exposed brick with dark highlights, a second lofted floor and a few steps down to a lowered area. It does have hints of being a Sports/Cubs bar (certain memorabilia) but I won't think that should stop any Sox fans from going there (unless a Cubs game is on). There are home made potato chips for free that in all fairness are HIT-OR-MISS. What does that mean? It means sometimes they are perfect and a great with some beer. But other times someone should just realize that they over did cooked them, they taste burnt and are not very appetizing at all. The food is HIT-OR-MISS. It seems some things they do well and others not so much. The breaded mushrooms are bland. Two of my friends did not like the chopped salads. My other friend loved the oyster special. I've had the buffalo chicken sandwich, and it was so-so. And I heard no complaints from a friend that had one of their burgers. I've had the same server a few times. It's strange. One time she was right on top of things - when that beer of mine was just about empty she was there asking if I was in need of another. On another visit she went MIA several times and I was left with a sad empty glass. HIT-OR-MISS! I've never sat at the bar, but I imagine that would take care of my server going MIA. The music, when there is a band, has been too loud. Not, "sorry Grandpa this is how it's supposed to sound" loud. More like, "we'll talk when the band takes a break because even though you are yelling directly into my ear I cannot hear you." Are you seeing the theme here? If you go enough you'll see that it is HIT-OR-MISS. The thing is, the misses aren't enough to strike them out. The little things that need to be changed aren't deal breakers, and if they tweaked these things, this place could be a 5* with ease.

This location has seriously had a lot of changes in the past few years, but it appears that The Sanctuary may be here a while. When we came here on a Friday night though, this bar was surprisingly empty. It was actually kind of weird having our ID's checked by a bouncer in an empty place. He looked bored. The bartenders were nice, but clearly were over serving us, not that I am complaining. They had rumchata, which we drank. I remember there being free snacks like chips or popcorn, but I'm not 100% on that. Maybe they weren't free. Who knows. The best feature of this bar though, is the payout gambling! They have penny slot machines, which I won 75$ playing. In fact our whole group came out ahead. That right there is enough to bring me back.

A nice addition to downtown Brookflield and a very nice looking split level bar. The service seemed to be working pretty fast and hard so I am not sure why some have complained but this place is a great place to catch a sporting event.

I like the atmosphere of this place. Drinks are good if you like the usual Jack and Coke, otherwise it can get a little iffy. My beverage of choice is a Manhattan which they do not make correctly. The service can be terrible or non existant at times (usually during the rush), and get packed quick on weekends because it is a small place. If they are having a party on the lower level for get about it... you will probably be standing somewhere by the bar. What I really like about this place is their food. Very good bar food and they give out free homemade chips to snack on while you drink. I give this place a 3 because it really depends on when you go. It can be great or not so great all depending on the time and day.

  • Tony D.

My fiance and I went here for lunch...We didn't really expect much, but were really impressed with the decor of the place. Flat screens all over, wood floors, exposed brick and a nice bar area. We really had no idea from the outside..since it's all blacked out. The food was pretty good - and they had a good beer prices. I also enjoyed the free homemade chips they give us while we wait for our food to come. Is this a place i'd go if i wanted really great food - no...but I definitely plan on coming back here with friends to drink and watch some sports. It's a really great addition to Brookfield.
