Go to this place really HUNGRY because you will get a ton of food! I concur with everything Jamie H's review says. The decor inside is really beautiful. Artists have painted some fantastic murals. I would love to know who did the painting. I took home a paper menu to list some items: They have 9 vegetarian offerings which is pretty good for B/N. Lunch fajitas = $6.55 ($1 more for shrimp) Dinner fajitas = $9.25 for steak or chicken or combo of both = $11.95 for Herradura (steak, shrimp, chicken, chorizo) The lunches are all in the $6 range. Most dinners are $8 range. They also offer 4 egg dishes for breakfast/brunch on their lunch menu. I didn't try a margarita but will next time. Straws are too short for their glasses was my only miniscule quibble. My son and I left very happy and with a good quantity of leftovers.

Very reasonably priced food that's also tasty. I had the steak fajitas and my GF had the House Special which has steak, chicken and shrimp with vegetables in a cheese sauce. Both of these were around $9 and a regular margarita was under $4. I've also had the steak burrito in the past and that was also good. Service is also fast and friendly.

Herradura is very, very similar to Los Potrillos in menu and food quality. I tend to prefer service at Los Potrillos, but Herradura is better for cleanliness and location (for me, plus parking is better). As a vegetarian, LP and Herradura are head and shoulders above other B/N options, and quite similar to Dos Reales in C-U. Much better vegetarian options than than El Toro or Fiesta Ranchera. Again, I've been to better mexican restaurants (and perhaps LP is a smidge better), but this is probably tops on my list due to convenience and cleanliness. I wish they'd buy longer straws (too short for their glasses!), but other than that, great addition to b/n all around.

Good, tasty, solid exemplar of Mexican food. Expansive menu, large portions. There isn't anything food wise that shouts out for a lot of attention but there also isn't anything that will disappoint you either. Meals are very affordable, facilities are clean and charming and the staff is friendly and attentive. Definitely worth giving it a go.

This is my go to place for Mexican in Blo-No. This place has good, solid Mexican food. Nothing is really rave worthy, but I've had at least 7 different things and have yet to be disappointed. My gf and I go here regularly and generally will have a couple (or more) cocktails, an app and two dinners for around 30 bucks. You can't beat that!

Haven't found any authentic Mexican food in Bloomington yet. Cross this place off the list. Three of us went to try it out after local recommendation. We ate a bite or two each, and left. Food was greasy, tasted microwaved, and place wasn't clean. Add the fact that the male servers were leering at my daughters and making inappropriate comments. Yuck.

Being a native Southern Californian, I am very biased and I have a hard time finding anything remotely resembling the kinds of food we get in So Cal and Baja. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think the food at Herradura is just ok. Their carnitas is bland and is not roasted Mexican style. You don't get the crispy bits of goodness when you pan roast or pressure cook pork as opposed to roasting on a rotissierre like they do out west. The carnitas at Herradura seems devoid of seasoning.

Awesome service. Great food, great margaritas. Beats the socks off Los potrillos.

I promised my grandma I would write this review. I had seen good reviews for this place and decided to take my Spanish grandma here and we were so disappointed. There wasn't salt on ANYTHING, not even the chips. The salsa had no spice or salt. My beef tacos were driping in grease and the ground beef looked like Taco Bell meat without the seasoning. Again, no salt on that. The beans looked canned, and the rice tasted bland. My biggest disappointment was the Queso Funido. Instead of using a delicious cheese/chorizo combo, they simply used the dipping cheese, tossed some chorizo on it, and covered it in pico de gallo. It also tasted old, like it had been siting under a heat lamp for days. I would give this place 0 stars if I could, it is THE WORST MEXICAN IN TOWN.

My new favorite Mexican place in town. The food was perfect. Very authentic and tasty. I especially loved the way they prepared their beans. The menu was huge, and it was affordable. The interior is new and looks a lot better than all of the other Mexican places in town. I would choose this over El Portón, which is saying a lot, because I friggen love that place. Lo recomiendo.

It's 3 years later and my husband and I still come here frequently. The food and service are both consistent. When mistakes are made they're quickly fixed without any issues. My only wish is that it was as close to my house as Los Potrillos!

Good portions. Good food. Reasonable prices. We are looking forward to coming back again. My husband ordered the ribeye. Chose to have them slice it. Was full of flavor and very tender. I had steak and chicken fajitas. Just perfect. The side dish with the extras came out with the guac in a small taco bowl. Chips and 2 different salsas on the table are just what you would expect from a good quality Mexican place

I've been here twice now and was pleasantly surprised to find authentic Mexican food in the area. They have more vegetarian options than most Mexican places, which is a bonus for me. I like the fajita vegetables, which comes with a ton of food. The wait staff is really friendly and helpful. Overall I give this three stars because although the food is good, it's not outstanding and few of the dishes go outside the norm.

Hidden spot but damn did I enjoy this burrito!! The waiters were really welcoming and helpful. They give you free chips and salsa by the minute you walk in - so a really good first impression. We had the fajita burrito and the carne asada - both was really flavourful and plentyful. I can only recommend going here - the atmosphere, food and service is really good :)

Drinks took 25minutes and dinner was served a sweet 25 minutes later. Fifty minutes for service when it was not really busy. I can understand some kitchen issue but then it needed to be explained. Other than the service food was decent.

Went here with coworkers to celebrate a birthday. The place is clean. The waiter was nice but tried to walk off without taking my order. Took everyone else's order then started to walk off. I really should have let him go. I could have filled up on chips and salsa; which were okay. I got the polo chicken. The bottom of the chicken was covered in burnt cheese. I kept peeling it off. This really grossed out the guy sitting across from me. I will not go back here. Being ignored, the burnt cheese, and fiesta style food is just not good for me. I'd rather go someplace else

Herradura is an above average dining experience. Carne India is an excellent choice if you're looking for a dish to set apart the establishment from others in BloNo. Relocated from the Chi 5 years ago. Slim pickings for dining excellence, but Herradura receives applause and return patronage...

Best Mexican I've found in Bloomington. Very good selection and much more authentic than most others in the area. I really enjoyed interacting with the staff here. I learned Spanish as a young kid in Venezuela and enjoyed talking to them. Business travelers - great lunch and dinner located next to Bloomington airport and State Farm

I've enjoyed every meal I've had at Herradura. Probably my families favorite Mexican restaurant in Bloomington. Great lunch specials every day. Great margaritas too. My favorite dish is the Herradura Fajitas but I've had numerous dishes and all were very good.

So this has developed into my go to place for takeout while I am in Bloomington. The food is good, decent prices, I grab a draft while I wait, parking is easy, the location is convenient, and so it is an easy decision. Might branch out next time, but I haven't been disappointed yet stopping here.

Service was great. (Not sure if it's because I was with several Latino friends or not). Waters, chips and salsa were always refilled. Portion sizes were average. I got a quesadilla pollo azado. The chicken was tender and seasoned well, but I would've liked more cheese in my quesadilla. My friends and I came on a Thursday evening which happened to be half priced margaritas. It's still $10 for the margarita but it does come in a beer mug.

Super Dinner #1 that's all you need to know....seriously. Haven't come across to many meals where you get more bang for your buck than this.

We were traveling between Oklahoma and Wisconsin looking for a good Mexican place to eat before everything was closed. After reading several reviews we settled on Herradura. Pretty easy to find just off business I-55 we walked in about 8:05 pm. The entire wait staff was unbelievably friendly, we were seated promptly and fresh chips and salsa soon followed. The chunky salsa was far better than its milder blander counterpart but some people cant handle spicy so the mild salsa would be perfect for them. We also started with an appetizer of the guacamole, for being so late in the evening it tasted as if they had just made it fresh. If possible you must go on Thursday nights when the jumbo 30oz Margaritas are only $3.75 one of the best specials we have ever found. We ordered the Mexicanas Fajitas which includes steak, chicken and shrimp. We also ordered the Shrimp cocktail which had to contain well over a half pound of shrimp it tasted fresh and did not have a fishy taste. If I had to guesstimate a count I would say somewhere between 12 tob15 nicely sized freshly cooked shrimp. The sauce they were marinating in was a little sweet, with a citrus flavor. Different but REALLY good. It also included huge chunks of perfectly ripened avocado. The Fajitas came soon after and didn't disappoint either. The steak chicken and shrimp were cooked perfectly as well. The rice and beans were simply a delightful accompaniment to an already great experience. Jonathan our waiter was prompt and courteous, and the owner even stopped by to check in us. As a side note: if you do order the shrimp cocktail use the remaining marinade as a great topping for your Fajitas. All in all a five star experience, great service and great prices The total bill was under 40 dollars with 3 jumbo Margaritas and fried ice cream included. We are looking forward to our next trip to Herradura even talking about staying at a hotel close by for the Thursday night Margarita special. Simply a great restaurant.

We are regulars to Los Potrillos, but finally made ourselves go and check out Herradura for comparison. Little did we know that doing so would begin to feel like, as my husband said, an episode of Seinfeld. The menus were so identical that we were able to order our exact same dishes as LP: Him Veggie A and Me Combo 17. The waiters used the exact same sorts of stchicks when taking the order, checking ID, bringing the checks. Salsas pretty similar. And dishes, just about identical. I'm not complaining. The staff were fun and nice and as for the food, Los Potrillos is a rut for a reason --we love it there. It was just funny to go to another restaurant and have a nearly identical experience. DID like the enchilada sauce better at LP than here, although my husband thought Herradura's guacamole was better. We'll probably continue to go to Los Potrillos, as that place just feels like home. But great to know there's another standby, should we begin to crave Mexican at Lowe's rather than at Meijer.

Best Mexican food in Bloomington. Service is fast, servers are super friendly. Prices very reasonable. Love the $3.00 Drafts!

This place touts itself as "honest" Mexican food--don't know that I've ever had dishonest Mexican food, but we were quite full and content with our truthful tacos and tamales. The chips were warm, crispy, and bottomless--I LOVED the chunky salsa (had a real kick to it) and ate about 3 bowls of it myself (how can I help it if the friendly waiter keeps bringing more and more and more?) Entrees were large and tasty....looked like most of our food had the same generic, orangeish red enchilada sauce on it--yummy enough, but not particularly distinctive. PK's "house special" (chicken, steak, shrimp grilled up up with fajita mixins) looked awesome--I was sad to see him leave all those sauteed peppers and onions behind. Staff were friendly and attentive, and basically just spoke to us unabashedly and almost entirely in Spanish, as though we were actually in Mexico, rather than central Illinois (to me this was a good and fun thing, though apparently my Spanish minor has gone so unused in recent years that I can't even manage a "happy new year to you as well" without first staring like a deer in headlights for a few minutes). And now, the math: a margarita and 6 beers. Bottomless chips and salsa, 6 entrees plus a rogue tamale...we were stuffed, with two boxes of leftovers to bring home, and the damage was less than $70. Huzzah! Not the best Mexican I've ever had, but tasty and way affordable. Great for a big group or family outing, where you just want everyone to be full and happy without dropping a fortune.

Best Mexican restaurant in town, hands down! Food is delicious, fresh and unique. Service is excellent too. Love it!

Food is tasty. Not bland. Salsa is spicy. Dont worry about an appetizer because the food came out in less than 5 minutes. Descent prices too. Most dine items were $6-$9. Good of you want quick, good Mexican food. Not much for ambience though. You want that, try El Toro.

The menu at Herradura is like almost every other mexican place in town. Nothing new under the sun. That being said, their mixed fajitas were plentiful, hot, and very good! The veggies and meat were in smaller pieces than most places which I liked. I loved their salsa. They had two kinds - one chunky and one more traditional. They were both good. The service was impeccable and even the owner was making the rounds taking care of people. Hubby liked their rice better than anywhere because it was so light and fluffy. Now for the bad. I had a mango margarita that was simply awful. I don't know if it was the fault of the tequila, mango mix, or both, but I couldn't drink it. Thankfully it didn't cost too much. The chips were also horrible - thick, greasy, and stale. I can't say that they're always this way, because I know places get a bad batch now and then. It has happened to us at El Toro, and normally their chips are excellent. We shared the good and the bad with the owner, who was very gracious in receiving criticism. I was a little disappointed that he didn't offer to reimburse, or at least replace, my margarita, seeing as we had not drunk it, but oh well. Honestly, I'll probably just stick with El Toro. They have some different dishes that I like and their margaritas are awesome!

Very flavorful, nice waiters. Super fast Mexican food. This restaurant has the best seasoned dishes, they don't all taste the same like other places around town.

I really like the food in here. It's very amazing and price is reasonable. The store is clean and service is fast. Usually the wait line is not crazy like Los Potrillos, and since their food is pretty similar, I like Herradura better.

Bloomington has a lot of Mexican restaurants. I would have to say that most are about the same quality in terms of food. Herradura from a food standpoint is similar. The food is hot, plentiful, and tasty. I had the house special which is a combination of steak, chicken, and shrimp smothered in a cheesy sauce with peppers. It comes with rice and an enchilada. Lots of food and very good. The prices are very low. The drinks were tasty. The service was quick and friendly. I think what separated this place from some of the other places in town was the cleanliness. VERY clean. I'd recommend giving the place a try...you won't be disappointed.

love the margarita slushy. was good and alcoholic, AND really good value for money, the food is very good as well. definitely recommended for travelers looking for a good bite. i ordered the chicken/shrimp fajita and a medium margarita - was heavy. food coma was induced. service is ok.

One of my favorite spots in Bloomington and a chance to get away from the chains. Great Mexican food at a great price. Always leave stuffed. Very friendly staff, too.

This is a restaurant that lets the taste of the food come through instead of hiding it behind heavy doses of hot spices, or smothering it with melted cheese. Portion sizes were good, the drinks were tasty, and the service was solid. Total tab for two entres, two drinks and a tip was $30. Definitely going back.

Herradura had better than average reviews online so I went there a few weeks ago with a friend for dinner. Although there is a pleasant atmosphere and friendly vibe from the waitstaff, the food was rather bland in my opinion. I generally judge a Mexican restaurant on two things straight away: their salsa and guacamole. It sounds silly but you can tell a whole lot about a Mexican restaurant from simple basics that should be expertly executed. The guacamole was extremely boring, freezing cold, and lacked any punch or cilantro. It definitely wasn't fresh. Nothing on the menu blew me away or seemed uniquely creative to me...same old fare as any other place, even though I was desperate to find an item on the menu that might make them stand out with signature dishes, etc. I was happy to see that they offered a pork taco dish with green salsa and the option of flour or corn tortillas. No complaints, it was rather tasty, but again, no wow factor going on there with the taste buds... I haven't had the chance to sample what the Bloomington area has to offer in regards to Mexican cuisine, but I will say that Herradura wasn't quite up to my standards. I expect a lot more soul and creativity in the cooking, especially from a restaurant that claims to be authentic.

Authentic Mexican food and drinks. nice selction of beers and margaritas should be expected at Mexican rstaurants, and Herradura does NOT disappoint. Food is served quickly and hot and plentiful. Servers are attentive. They really want you to return over and over again.

I'm going to give a couple of points because I'm from CA, and I'm not sure about the general taste of people from the area. Unlike one of the reviewers, I found that the service was excellent, the waiter apologized that he had a big party, but my meal came as fast as I could anticipate it; I went through one of the Chunky Salsas waiting; no problem. As for the food, I had the Verde Burrito and a side order of Chile Relleno. The burrito was tasty, but not the verde I am used to; not dry, but no real chile/cilantro sauce I expect, still the pork was well seasoned and tasty. The rice was plain to the extent of needing a lot of chunky salsa, and the beans were refried; pretty pedestrian, but I ate it and enjoyed it. The Relleno was the best part of the meal; a whole chile stuffed with a cheese that was interestingly sweet, but the whole relleno was quite good. For me, pretty meiocre; the non-chunky salsa tasted like tomato sauce - but I make award-winning salsa, so I am the worst critic. I enjoyed the chunky salsa, as I said, I had two helpings; the chips were warm and light, not too brown at all and tasty. Not a bad meal for someone looking for mild Mexican cuisine, but nothing to write home about. All in all a good lunch.

If you want a lot of food for a low price, get the house special. Its excellent and theres so much on the plate you might end up getting a doggie bag.Me & my gf like this place. We have ate at this place a whole lot,and only got bad service once.I have ordered burritos here, and asked forthem stuffed with chorizo which is extra, and they were great. The chili rellenos our very big & taste great. I agree with other people that there menu is identical to los potrillos. This place seems quieter though & it does have better parking.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
