Farm-to-table, beautiful interior, and yet... The composition of my meal wasn't quite where it should be for a place this classy/pricy. I had the potato gnocchi and a side of sauteed mushrooms. The gnocchi came with a substitution not listed on the menu, which was my first disappointment, because I love Brussels sprouts and I'm not really a fan of carrots, yet the Brussels sprouts on the menu turned into carrots on my plate, with no warning from my server. The composition problem is mainly in the textures: they paired light and pillowy gnocchi with the chew of various root vegetables, where I think a crunch (of nuts, or crisply fried Brussels sprouts, for example) would have made more sense. The sauteed mushrooms were good, but I was expecting something a little more exciting than mushrooms I can easily cook myself (maybe a punchy sauce or pickled veggie on top) for $8. But again, the space is beautiful, and the service was very friendly, so it's probably a good date spot. Just go with moderate food expectations.
Excellent farm to table place, I had the root vegetables wrapped in bacon to start. It's the end of root vegetable season, so it's not on the menu much longer. I also had the duck special, roasted duck breast with cherries served with fingerlings and gnocchi. Ended with the Creme Brulee. Everything was tasty it's a culinary jewel in Blo-No. The starter came with probably 16 wrapped veggies, I was worried about finishing everything. My friend I was eating with helped me out and I was able to enjoy everything. Started with an old fashioned which was a little sweet with Demerara syrup but still balanced.
We had our wedding reception upstairs. Bottom-line, it was wonderful. The food was fantastic, guests are still talking about it (almost a year later). The staff and management were friendly and thoughtful in providing assistance in our planning and in adding the small elements that really made us smile. I think this is probably one of the best restaurants you will find in the Bloomington-Normal area, that is saying something considering that there are a lot of restaurants in the Bloomington-Normal area and I have been to many. It is locally owned and operated which is a plus in my book. The reason I am giving this 4, instead of five stars is that there were some general organizational concerns. The most glaring being that when we drove down for what we discussed would be a tasting, we not only had to wait an hour for someone to show up, but there was no food for us to taste. If I was more type-A, we probably would have lost our minds, but we had eaten in the restaurant before and trusted the food for our event would be of the same high-quality and it was! Now, to add this was in October of 2013 and there were some transitional issues that the business was experiencing that have hopefully since been resolved. I did want to, however, explain why I went with 4 instead of 5 stars.

the staff was very nice even though I had a difficult order. The food was excellent and everyone enjoyed it
I have lived about 5 minutes away from Grove Street Bakery for the past 2 and half years. I am disappointed it took me this long to discover this place. My preferred baked goods are usually items like cookies or brownies. I saw delicious looking selection of cookies and brownies but my eyes were drawn to a cinnamon roll. It had this amazing looking caramel glaze on top of it. I am not really a fan of caramel but I had a good feeling about it. My intuition was right because it was awesome. I was surprised how inexpensive the prices are. Two cinnamon rolls and a loaf of bread was slightly under 5 dollars. I will definitely be frequenting this place more often.
This place is very popular in Bloomington so I'm surprised there aren't more reviews. I haven't had much experience with Grove Street Bakery but I have eaten a lot of their cookies and I am a huge fan. I don't really like cookies but I tried their frosted sugar cookies once and am glad I did - they're fantastic. I had to bring a gift to be auctioned recently and Grove Street allowed me to buy a gift certificate for a couple dozen cookies without putting a price on the certificate, which is nice because it's awkward to auction something that has a price on it. They do not accept credit or debit, so make sure to bring cash.

Took my husband here on a lunch date Friday afternoon; I got a glass of white wine and he ordered a bottle of beer (after being disappointed that they were all out of the Destihl on draught he wanted). Ultraman episodes were being played on the TVs, which we found quirky! We took turns ordering from the small plates menu where things are brought out to you as they're ready. Pork buns had a delightful spiciness with the dollop of Sriracha sauce on top, and came out in a matter of minutes - a great choice if you're in a rush, though why rush through such good food? Both plates of sushi we ordered - the Spicy Salmon and the Spicy Thai Tuna - were delightful. The Thai was my favorite, the salmon my husband's. The pretzel balls were tasty, and my husband is in *love* with the beer cheese sauce they're served with. I wasn't as impressed with the other (mustard) sauce served with them, though. Had to take some of the tuna rolls and a couple pretzel balls home for later, where they were enjoyed as a pre-dinner snack! Would definitely come back, but probably won't wear a white dress again - my clumsy husband ended up splashing me with soy sauce!
Found (and loved) Anju Above because we tried to return to Epiphany Farms for lunch (after loving the dinner the night before) but only Anju Above was open. It is run by the same awesome people, same farm-to-table approach, just different menu and a more casual style. We had their mac and cheese (delicious!), a salad (same as at Epiphany Farms - outstanding!!) with salmon (I asked it cooked rare and they made it beautifully rare, it was so delicious!) and cookies for dessert. Okay, these were THE BEST cookies I had ever had. Period. Loved it. If for nothing else, go to Anju Above for the cookies!! Thank you to Epiphany Farms for caring about the world (with their sustainable farming and farm-to-table approach) and for caring about the palates of their customers :) P.S. Forgot to mention, both Epiphany Farms and Anju Above filter their tap water which ends up tasting great!!! Why can't more places be like this?
I liked the "everything à la carte" approach, it was a fun place to eat. The way you order there is not as a "meal" it more of a "now I want this, I'll order this", after you eat it, if you're still hungry then you order something else. The wait staff was very nice too and let me try differnet beers before ordering them to make sure I'd like them. Super friend, will definetly go back. The price was a little bit high, but fair for an à la carte style resturant.

I tried the Tuesday's 2 pieces special for $1.29. It was good and fresh even though I went there not on the peak time. The hot and spicy ones are not hot at all though but you can ask for hot sauce. It is affordable for a family meal as well. I definitely recommend this place. Oh, they do charge you for honey if you ask for it. Just saying..One more thing, they do not accept American Express.
Well after talking to corporate and many letters to the company. I have got them to come back to Champaign, IL So keep them busy, so they don't leave again. The best spicy chicken in the area you can get. Not that steroid chicken you get at K**. But it sure taste a lot better !
I am a regular here. They always have friendly, quick service. The place is always clean as well. I like the spicy chicken as it is different, in a good way, than spicy chicken from most chains.

This is a local place on the eastside of town by the car dealerships. Its been around since the 70s and we like to try this place every once in a while. They have a Great sausage/green pepper pizza that really hit the spot. We also had the garlic bread as well which was delicious. The decor has red skeleton pictures hanging up all over. The dining room is pretty clean & the bathrooms were clean as well(a big plus). After eating pizza they have a fun park in the back, with bumper cars, mini golf, batting cages & video games to do. We will be back again.
Grady's is a mystery of the pizza universe that I'm not sure I'll ever understand. Being in Central Illinois, getting a really good pizza is a crapshoot. You can either go to the Central Illinois staples -- Monicals or Tobins -- or you can try your luck at other places. Grady's, however, is a unique place to go because if you go there for reasons other than the mini golf and go karts, it's pretty blah. There are two things about Grady's which I never understood: the sweet sauce and the meatball sized sausage. I was going to write more, but I think I'll just leave it at that. If you don't like sweet-sauced pizza, then I would not go to Grady's.
I've only had Grady's pizza a few times, and I do enjoy it. Yes, the sauce is sweet, which not everyone likes, but it's a cool unique flavour.

Taqueria El Porton

Reviews:
Best Mexican food in Bloomington.
Los Potrillos, which to my palate, is a totally different style of food, used to be my favorite. And then one day the switch flipped, and El Porton is not only my favorite, but I want it all the time. It can be very busy at lunch time on a weekday, and the seating area is small. But I've never felt rushed, the food is always fresh and fantastic, and the prices are excellent. WHY, WHY IS TODAY WEDNESDAY*?? *(They are closed Wednesdays.)
First of all, I liked that the salsa was so frikkin hot that it prevented me from eating the usual basket of chips that I would eat with a milder salsa. I actually had room in my gourd for the entree that I ordered. We drank Dos Equis and feasted upon chiles rellenos and a grilled chicken dish that was simple and out of this world. The refried beans were definitely homemade and delicious, the rice was fluffy and flavorful and the perfectly ripe avocado slice on the side was a nice accompaniment. The chiles were easily the best I've ever had and were rapidly gobbled. Interior is basic and simple, but the waitstaff is attentive and there's a very authentic Latino vibe in there. It's not trying too hard (other restaurants come off like a Mexican theme park). The location was very accessible to the B & B where I was staying and it's easy for anyone passing through Bloomington to stop at. Yay tacos!
