I have been planning a trip with my 2 sister's for a few weeks. I am very familiar with the area, but i haven't been here in years. I yelped area restaurants to see where we could get a descent meal and was very surprised to see this place with great reviews. So I had to go and to my surprise I was not disappointed. The food was great the server was excellent. We all ordered different meals and desserts and had a tasting of each. Sorry but I can't remember the names. The desserts were Banana Forrester crem burlee and the red velvet cupcake all were great. I will be back when I'm in the area in October.
Traveling south on 57 we found this unassuming gem in a small southern Illinois town. Wonderful bread, awesome soup and salads. Actual meals were wonderful as well, totally worth the stop on the square.
My daughter and I stopped in for dinner on our way back for the State Science Fair in Carbondale. Very friendly and competent service from the call to make a reservation to the time we walked out. Specials were excellent. We had a couple of steaks. Done just right. Great corn and bacon chowder. I'm giving it five stars because it's obvious they are trying hard and doing a great job. My only recommendations are to drop some $$$ into some interior improvements and upgrade the silverware.

Bacon bits in my Greek Salad. WTF?! When we initially walked in I thought wow, what a cool cafe. It's an order at the counter place and then they deliver your food to the table. Everything was good except for one thing. They put bacon bits in my Greek salad. Now, whoever heard of bacon bits in a Greek salad? It never even occurred to me to ask them to leave them out because I had no idea they were going to be in there. This is a major fail because as a vegetarian, this place just needs to a little more accommodating I think. Well, it is a little podunk town in Southern Illinois so I guess you can't expect too much.
Great food, coffee, and ambiance. Staff was very friendly. This place exemplifies exactly what I look for in a cafe in any sized city.
Cute place with a relaxing coffee shop atmosphere, great for talking or using their Wi-Fi. Food is pretty good but expect small portions at a very high price. $14 for a small sandwich, two cookies and tea is a bit much. If prices were a little lower I'd frequent more often.

La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Great little place tucked away just off the Hwy. Food was authentic and service superb. My husband ordered Fajitas minus the tomato. When they brought our dinner his Fajitas had tomatoes in it. Authentic Mexican Fajitas can be bland and he noticed that's what they looked like. Our server came, saw tomatoes, and tried to take the dinner back. We said we would keep it to go and my husband ordered Carne Asada (which he said had a great flavor!). They use a leaf lettuce instead of iceberg also which is a fantastic touch. Our bill came and they took the Fajitas OFF even though we took that dinner home. We would definitely return.
With a name like "La Fiesta" restaurant, I expected a lot more... The salsa tasted like straight tomato sauce...zero flavor. My chimichanga with steak was chewy and had no taste...the chicken lacked spice...blah. Very disappointing...will not be going back there. Ever.
Came here a few years ago and the food was really good, on this visit it was pretty bland, the chicken tasted boiled, and had no real flavor, even the side items lacked a lot. Service was quick and attentive but that was about the best part of the visit, probably won't be coming back!!!

Good seafood is pretty rare in Southern Illinois, so it was nice to find this gem. I've found the service to be good, the beer cold, and food tasty. The alligator appetizer is a must, since finding alligator around here is REALLY difficult. They run not-infrequent beer specials and have a bit of a cajun flair to the restaurant. It's fun and tasty. It's a bit hard to find - look for the place that says "Fish Restaurant" and you're there.
This place doesn't even deserve one star. We were in town for the Street Nationals car show in June and we saw it was "Voted #1 Seafood restaurant", so we decided to try it. Afterwards we wonder if the only thing they have to compare it to is a Long John Silver (and even then LJS is better). We made "reservations" because their website recommended them. We got there on a Saturday night about 7:45p and no one was there. It was a tiny hole in the wall that had horribly outdated decor. The waitress said to sit wherever because the table that was saved for us was given away... Considering there was no one else in there, why couldn't you save it for us? I asked the waitress for a drink menu and she says "Pepsi, coke", etc... I said "I mean alcohol" and she said (like I was dumb or something), "oh we can make whatever you want". I said "Malibu Bahama mama please", figured I better keep it simple-It was gross cheap rum... We tried to order and they were out of fried shrimp. Seriously??? But they had regular grilled shrimp skewers. Red flag that the fried shrimp is frozen. I got crab cakes, I didn't know about you, but they aren't supposed to look like Tyson breaded chicken patties. My husband got the catfish, it was gross. My friend got the grilled shrimp skewers-only thing that was good, but still not fresh. Her husband got a poor boy, it was also nasty. You could tell they were annoyed by our presence in their establishment. The food sucked, service sucked and atmosphere is not very nice. It's all frozen fried food and the alcohol is all cheap rail (when I asked for Malibu). The funny thing is their "patio" is literally an ally with two tables... To top it off, three of four of us got sick. Not even 30mins after eating there we were in the hotel room bathroom and one had to go to the lobby bathroom because it was so urgent. Thankfully it left room for real food later, when you consider McDonalds real food (and we NEVER eat there), you know it's bad. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy...
Went here for my dad's birthday party - a group of 14 plus a bebbeh. Service was a bit slow, but it was pretty busy in there - and the waitress was really accommodating and sweet. Beer was cold, I highly recommend the black bean soup, and the clam fritters were delish! I ended up getting the Greek chicken, which was A-OK but the potato salad stole my heart. I mean, we're not talking 17th Street potato salad, but it holds it's own. A solid restaurant.

I took my wife and in laws there for dinner and I'm sorry but we could not eat any thing we ordered the Wong tong soup was a sweet soup and they had no idea what some things we asked them about curtain food that is a command Chinese food.
Simply too sweet!!! I don't understand why people gave five stars but it was just awful chinese food in my opinion. We ordered schwan chicken and it was just too sweet. We ordered something with waitresses recommendation, but that was even sweeter. Even their sweet and sour soup was too sweet, but not sour. However, the service was really good. Waitress was very attentive. That is the only reason for two stars.
Definitely one of the best American Chinese food restaurants around. I'm talking old school american Chinese, in all it's batter dipped, bright orange sweet and sour sauced glory. I had the dinner special, which comes with a spare rib, crab rangoon and a huge pork egg roll for your app, a choice of a cup of hot and sour soup or wonton soup, and an entree with your choice of white or fried rice. All this for only $10.95. And the portions are huge. I got the Mongolian beef, which was tasty with crunchy bits of deep fried rice noodles mixed in. Yum! The hot and sour soup was more sweet than sour, but it was def spicy and had good bits of mushrooms, wood ear (that weird looking black fungus stuff) and tofu, rather than the brothy concoctions you find elsewhere. The hubs doesn't even like egg rolls but he ate half of mine and his own. In the end, we took enough home for another 2 meals. There were new people working there and they were super nice. Our waiter was waiting on all the tables and that dude was basically running to each one. He was super efficient. Forget the all you can eat buffets and head out to the Full Moon House, in the Rural King plaza in Benton.
