The food is great...steak tacos, burritos, tortas, you name it. Skip the El Fuegos and Taco El Nortes, Algonquin Mexican Restaurant is the best!

The tacos aren't that great, I'd say average. They kinda fall apart. The burritos are fantastic though. Especially the shredded beef. They're really nice there, too. Very professional demeanor from the young man working there.

Visited in Cinco de Mayo - although restaurant was not particularly busy, staff appeared overwhelmed - phones kept ringing, people picking up or waiting for carry out orders. Let's set the right expectations - this is a small place in a strip mall, small staff, nothing fancy. I would definitely return - food was excellent, very reasonably priced - you may have to wait a bit for your order, and may even run out of certain things - sort of what can happen at home .

They win the taco war!!!!!! Hands down The shredded beef is intense!!! This family runs a nice place... Clean , friendly service and the chow is top notch. Table salsa works... The green and red sauces add great heat. The construction on 31 has cleared up and now you can get at the place.... Highly recommend. Viva Algonquin Mexican Restaurant!!

Ate here tonight for the first time. I had chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, plus rice and beans. All very good, though very skimpy on the mole sauce. My husband had the steak burrito and my son had the steak quesadilla - both were large quantities of food and very tasty. My husband and son also ordered Coke and were pleased to find out you can get it in large glass bottles. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient; restaurant was clean. I'd definitely recommend this place for Mexican food if you're in the area.

Steak and chorizo burrito was great! Plus Coke in a bottle. I will definitely be back.

I visited Algonquin Mexican Restaurant with my husband and son last night. We've never dined in before and haven't gotten takeout there in years (mainly because we don't live that close). I loved their corn tortillas and had a taste for them last night. I wasn't too crazy about the tortilla chips that came with the pico de gallo while we waited. They were so hard that my son couldn't eat them. They were ok for me and my husband. We ordered the ham & cheese quesadilla from the kids menu (which my son loved), the taco dinner for my husband (he was very pleased), and the steak huarache for me. I've never had a huarache before and it's basically a steak taco (the meat and toppings) over a fried masa base. Pretty good, but the masa base was hard to cut through. My biggest issue with this restaurant was the size. Well, not just the size, but the ability to be tuned into other tables' conversations because of the size of the place. While we were there, 2 different parties came in (both 2 guys) and sat down. Now, I can't blame the patrons for this because they are adults out to dinner (although they could have been more mindful that there was a 4-year-old at the next table), but all I heard were f-bombs, countless other curse words, and intimate details of their relationships. They weren't being loud or disrespectful or anything, but the fact that there was no music playing in the background made it impossible not to pick up on a few words. I'm glad I had headphones in my purse and I was able to let my son watch YouTube videos on my phone so he wouldn't be subject to the nearby conversations. We ate quickly and were outta there. If there was music playing in the restaurant, I really think a lot of the noise from the conversations would have been minimized. There was a TV on playing a Spanish channel, but the volume was hardly audible. From now on, if I'm craving this place, I'll be doing takeout.

This place is a basic burrito house with good food. My husband and I have both dined in, and picked up food from here around three, maybe four times. Both of us really enjoy the steak tacos/steak burrito with cilantro and onion and their fresh, chunky guacamole... YUM! I'm slightly picky when it comes to the meat in my burrito and if I bite into hard chunks or super fatty pieces, I get a grossed out (I know.. grow up.. but to each their own.) But this place has good meat. The staff is also very friendly.

I want to enjoy this little Mexican restaurant, but they've failed the most basic task. Taking my order. Got home with my order, everything on my order was wrong, and they completely forgot one of my dinner entrees. I picked off the sour cream I never asked for and out of hunger ate my food in disdain. Not worth your time.

This is one of those hidden little places that you never notice. I have lived in lake in the hills for eight years now and just happen to find this restaurant about a year ago. I am very picky when it comes to Mexican food, but I have to say the size of the burrito for $5.00 is amazing! I can never finish the whole thing because it is huge. I do agree with one other review that the chips were hard. But over all, love it

Back in Chicagoland for the last time this year, had a craving for Mexican food since Mrs. Burgerdogboy has been on a cooking strike lately and she makes some fine Mexican platos. I was out in the NW burbs, some areas of which are increasingly populated with people of various Latin heritages, and mercados and taquerias are popping up like pop-ups. Not wanting to cause confusion among any potential customers, one entrepreneur labeled his restaurant as plain as plain could be: "Algonquin Mexican Restaurant." (AMR) With tables that will accommodate thirty and a counter with room for eight more, the AMX serves breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday with hours from 10A - 8 PM. They were doing a brisk take-out business, but I was in the mood to be waited on, so I took a seat a booth looking out at the Algonquin intersection the corners of "Road Construction" and "Needs Road Construction." The gajillion dollar downtown bypass appears that it will take another generation of works before it is actually finished, and from where I sit, will do little do alleviate the REAL area traffic problems, which are East - West, while the bypass is north-south. DOH! The menu is straight forward and straight Mexican. Order ala carte or a plate which includes beans and rice. (Me and the Mrs were forever spoiled by the refried beans in Aberdeen, WA one day). Turns out tho that these were pretty tasty. I wish I had ordered an additional side of them. (The ones in Aberdeen were so tasty we ate two orders at the table and got an order to go). Polished off the complimentary chips and pico, and then I ordered three tacos, chorizo, shredded beef, and ground beef. Chicken, steak, pork, and pork skin were other options. No tongue here. I thoroughly enjoyed the tacos, even tho I had them with the gringo flour tortilla. They come loaded with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. A second "filling" option is straight chopped onion and cilantro. Should have tried that. In order of favorite - chorizo one, then shredded beef, and lastly ground beef. The accompanying rice was nothing to write home (or here about) so i won't. I rarely eat rice as a side anymore. Can't say why and sure you don't care. Circumstances were such that I spent a fair amount of time in Mexico this year, and of course little North of the border can match local street food in Juarez or TJ, just like after living in China I was spoiled to that type of food in the US. But in any case, if you happen to be driving around the NW burbs, or live in Algonquin, Dundee, Lake in the Hills or Crystal Lake, the Algonquin Mexican Restaurant is worth a stop with freshly prepared food at great prices.

This our family's Mexican stop - the chips, pico, and guacamole are among the best I've had, and everything else is great and priced so well! We can feed a family of five for under $30. That's pretty amazing. Everything is made fresh to order and it's a little family run place. Just our style.

Initially the food used to be great well seasoned, I return there today 8/28/15 totally different. Asked for steak but now they serve ground beef instead. Tasted like Taco with a bigger bill.

One of the best Mexican restaurants around!! Am a frequent eater here and absolutely love it! Horchata is awesome as well! Haven't had one bad experience and eat here at least every other week - and I don't eat out often!

As other have said, this doesn't look great from the outside (practically a dive). Inside is clean, servers are friendly. can't ask for fresher food, even the guacamole is made scratch. Seems like they mix their own meat in the back. Prices are really good too, I'd go to this place over tacos el norte any day. Also there's more seating than described. There's about 5 counter seats, and at least 4-5 tables, just don't expect giant restaurant.

This place rocks! First off, if you are looking for a "dining" experience, then go away. If you want authentic Mexican food from a local family business then come here. Can't stress enough to keep your local businesses alive, especially in the algonquin area, also pay cash! Food here is exceptionally good. Always consistent. My favorites are the giant $5 burritos, tostadas, and tacos. All the ingredients are perfect. The homemade red and green sauces are sooooooo good! Chorizo is perfect not greasy, chicken is spiced well super soft. Owners are very nice and I wish them the best of luck. We pick up from here at least once a week. Prices are hard to beat as well.

A great Mexican restaurant with a warm family welcome. I've been here a number of times, and the food is usually very good. Mostly excellent preparation, and nothing has been bad. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, aesthetically, but is clean and functional. Not big, and tight for more than 4-6 people. The owner family is very friendly, and watches out for when you're done eating or need anything. Young man who typically takes my order is very nice, but a little shy at times. Great food for a good price, and nice people as well.

This is the kind of place that it would be easy to drive by dozens of times and not think to stop, but by all means, make sure you try this restaurant if you haven't. It's small and the kind of place that has clearly focused on making good food rather than distracting you with decorations, music, etc. It's quiet and simple inside, and the food is just good. The horchata is great, and obviously homemade. I don't know if the salsa is too, but it's very good as well. I had the shredded beef burrito, which I loved. The only drawback was that the beans and rice were just kind of typical. Good, but not memorable. My wife had the chicken with mole, and loved it as well. In all, both of us had very good meals at a very reasonable price.

I can't believe that I have yet to leave a review for this place. I have been going to Algonquin Mexican Restaurant since the week they opened and have been here at least 30+ times. Is this the best Mexican food i've ever had, not by a long shot. But it is the best Mexican food in the LITH/ALG area which is good enough for me. They KILL the crappy overpriced el norte. The food is consistent and good, i don't care too much for the red or green salsa's but for $5 the burrito is a great buy. Priced how it should be like the city places. For anyone that hasn't tried it, get a taco or burrito with Alambre (Steak with onions and peppers) it has really good flavor.

I have to review this place because I have friends who are obsessed with this place. Lets start with the chip and salsa - they are okay - the salsa is fresh but not sure if they make their own chips. I don't eat meat so lets get that out of the way .... there are not many options for vegetarians. They don't have fish or shrimp tacos. I had to settle for an avocado taco and a shrimp tostada. The shrimp were those teeny tiny kind, not in any type of sauce and were cold. It was $4 and not very good. My biggest problem with this place is they don't make their own hot sauce/green sauce. To me - that is standard at any Mexican place. Go to Tacos el Norte in Lake Zurich - you will never be disappointed. There are several places in the area that are better.

I just happened to notice the five star reviews on this place per the Yelp "people who viewed this viewed that" column on the right side of screen. I thought, could it really be THAT place?? The place I have passed a million times and always thought definitely need a tetanus shot to eat there. Yes, scary looking on the outside, not at all on the inside. We've been there twice now and once again I'm going to say it's my new favorite Mexican restaurant and (finally) one close to home worth going to. It appears to be run by Grandma(cooking), Mom(cooking) and teen/young adult kids (running register/phones/orders). The inside is very clean, about 10 tables and a counter/stool area. So far we've had steak burrito, steak tacos (cilantro & onion), Al Pastor (pork) tacos, chiles rellenos, cubano torta, pico de gallo (w/chips) and horchata. All of the above was fresh, excellent quality, perfectly seasoned and homemade. Not greasy, not overly seasoned and not under seasoned.....just right. I often compare places in my reviews as to whether or not they stack up to places I grew up with in Chicago. This place actually brought me right back to Mexico City. Notably the torta cubano had listed "sausage" on it which if not specifically identified (i.e. chorizo, ect) it will be a hot dog. This was exactly my experience in my travels around Mexico City, anything labeled just "sausage" was a hot dog. Who doesn't like a hot dog? And it's technically a sausage, right? So, check it out and give it a try. Support a local family restaurant and don't be scared of the outside, it's just an old building, and their priority is quality/fresh food not decorations.

My wife, daughter, and I thought we would try since so many positive reviews. I cannot confirm all positive reviews. We love Mexican and have eaten at various places all around USA. Favorite is in LA. We could not stay in restaurant as there was a nasty musty odor. So we took food home, but had to toss it as it just was unacceptable. I just can't understand all the positive reviews. There aren't many other Mexican restaurants in Algonquin, but our experience places them all far above this place.

Chicken flautas, chicken tostada, pico, shredded beef are so delicious. Owners are incredibly sweet. Love supporting this local establishment. We are loyal as one time I went to pick up food and when I got home I realized they didn't include two bottles of coke. I called them to inform them thinking they would put a credit on file, but the owner actually sent someone immediately to my home to hand deliver not only two bottles but four! Great customer service is what will keep this business alive.

I am Mexican and know authentic food. This is the best place around Algonquin. Save your money don't go to El Molino Or Tacos El Notre. The finest Mexican food.

I said "Siri, find me some good tacos" and my phone led me to a great lunch! Easy to pass by during construction don't. All the other 5-star reviews are accurate. Fantastic service and terrific food. I had the chorizo burrito and it was outstanding. Everything fresh and made from scratch, owners from central Mexico and use family recipes for everything-someone in that family really knows how to cook! I sat at the counter but clearly they do a lot of carry out. Glad I tried it and will definitely return.

To be honest - I was terrified to try this place. It is right off of RT 31 next to Sugar Hills Bakery and neighbors to the OLD Algonquin Post Office. From the outside, it does not look like a place I where I would want to eat. I am so glad I took the advice of a friend and tried this place out. The Chicken Burrito was as big as my head. I always order my burritos without lettuce (I think lettuce belongs in a bowl, not on my burrito, sandwich, etc.). I half expected the burrito to be smaller because there would be no lettuce filler... but I was wrong. It was big, hot and delicious. The food is super fresh tasting and I love that they have an open kitchen. Run, don't walk to Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

We just moved to the area about 2 months ago and we heard and read a lot of good things about this place so we stopped by on a friday night to eat. Its a fairly small place but we were greeted a min or so after we sat down. The guy was very polite and nice. The salsa is chunky and was really good, a nice bit of heat to it. I had the steak tacos and my husband had 1 ground beef taco and 1 steak taco. Its nice they let you mix and match, and all tacos were $2.25. We both thought the steak was delicious. My husband said the beef was also good. The rice was alright but a little bland. My husband is a picky eater and they got his order right with no lettuce or tomato which rarely happens. All in all we will def be going back! Give this place a try!

Updating my rating to a 5. We get carryout Mexican from Algonquin Mexican Restaurant pretty often. They have never messed up an order and the food is always terrific. Also, I don't know if my previous review had anything to do with it, but now you can get ala carte Chile Relleno tacos. Yay!

I'm definitely a fan of this place and it's the ONLY mexican joint I go to for burritos these days. I'd give them 5 stars if they would start local delivery and/or use grubhub or some other way of online ordering.

YUM!! I'm so excited to have tried this place - I've driven past it so many times, but I live in CL, so I wouldn't normally drive out to have a taco.. but now I will! I love that they put everything in the burritos - I mean everything. You usually have to ask to add stuff, here is what to leave out. Makes them so yummy. And I'm a stickler for salsa.. if the place doesn't have good salsa, why go? The red & the green both have good heat & flavor. I kept an extra to use on my eggs the next morning. And I can't find a place around that has shredded beef option. This is my favorite, fell in love with it while living in San Diego and it was such a bummer not to find it at any Mexican place near by. It was tasty and not greasy. Coming back for sure. Maybe like right now....

I think I can sleep a little more soundly knowing there's a good Mexican restaurant to my house. Thank you Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. I drove by this place several times, finally I yelped it and voila it's over 3 stars so why not give it a try! I'm glad I did. I ordered to go. The young man (assuming owners son) took my order, was very kind and in 10 minutes I had my order made. Bonus of this place, wait for it.... FREE SOUR CREAM! Yep you heard it, they don't charge .75$ for something that cost a few cents. The meat was flavorful and the burrito even came cut in half so it was easy to eat. And it was gone in about 5 minutes leaving me with a very satisfied stomach. Don't let the looks fool you try them out!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
