I lived in a lot of places and had lots of sushi. Sumisu's sushi is good most of the time (occasionally the fish can be of varied quality, though it's generally good). I find their simple, regular rolls best and actually a good deal given their quality. Their fancy creations are good, but a bit on the pricy side. Their tempura is actually quite good. The other dishes can leave something to be desired, and their edamame is cooked in butter...??? Perhaps some people like this style of edamame, not me. Overall, if you stick to the rolls you will not be disappointing. I'm glad Sumisu exists in Pocatello!

Slow and bad service. We had to ask for everything. The sushi is equal to grocery store or gas station level sushi. When I tried to send my roll back the waitress informed me since I ate a piece I would be charged. I left never finished and went to the sandpiper for a dinner snack. I'm from another town, don't trust the Yelp reviews.

I was nervous. The idea of raw fish in Idaho sounded very iffy to me. I went with the intention of having an iced tea while my friends ate. I ended up eating some of theirs, and then ordering my own. YUM! Highly Recommend!

Amazing food in a great atmosphere. What a gem in Pocatello. Tiny Dancer was our favorite roll but we enjoyed everything we ate here as always. Can't recommend strongly enough if you are in Pocatello or just passing through.

Come to this place if you are not in a hurry or don't have kids as the service is super SLOW! We waited for over 45 to get our food which when you have young kids is a life time. The food quality was alright & but the prices are too high. We have had better sushi many times before. We don't get the positive reviews. Definitely not coming back to this place again.

Always excellent sushi! I eat here every time I am in town. I was, though, disappointed in two things: First was the Miso soup. The mushrooms seemed dehydrated and certainly had no good texture or taste. I didnt finish it. We also used to enjoy the chicken lettuce wraps. But this time we sent the chicken back, it tasted awful. A second batch was no better. They have changed the seasonings or something. But do go! Great staff, wonderful sushi.

Very good sushi. In a very cool rehab building in old town. We tried many of the specialty rolls. Very good. I did not get the raw stuff, but the rolls were solid. Nice creative specialties. This place is better than expected in land locked Idaho. Very friendly service. Good beer selection and saki too.

Where Sumisu lacked in service, it made up for in sushi. The fish was fresh and tasted great but my drink was empty most of my meal and the night I was there wasn't busy at all. I enjoyed the china doll roll along with the fire dragon - it was served on actual fire. Very interesting but good.

Seriously authentic sushi at Sumisu. Tempura Vegetables are crisp and delicious, and you get a good amount for a good price. We had a Godzilla Roll and Pure Bliss Roll and would recommend both, but the Godzilla especially. Will go again next time we're in Pocatello.

The service and atmosphere is fantastic, and the sushi is good, but definitely not good enough to warrant the price. I've had better quality sushi for half that price. The presentation is great--that I can definitely say for it.

This place is better than any sushi place in Southern California!! You can actually taste the vegetables in the sushi. The flavor is great and you can see the work that is put into making them taste good. This place is well worth it and I am definitely coming back.

Had there Sushi on a work trip from Boise and it was surprisingly good! I have lived in SoCal, travel to Seattle for work regularly, and this place had a passion for great tasting sushi and provided a really nice dining experience with a very helpful and friendly Sushi chef! I will definitely be back my next time in town and have recommended it to a number of friends.

Not worth the money. Slow service, small amounts of fish. If you like spending $20-40 per person for rice then go ahead try it.

So so good! Here's what I always get and I'm never disappointed: Toasted Rice tea Tempura Vegetables Bisque Tiny Dancer Roll I never enjoyed sushi until I was forced to come here on a couple dinner date. It's delicious! I'm craving it now...

  • Danielle R.

Their rolls are amazing. I was scared to try it just based upon the stigma of 'raw fish' but I went with coworkers and they ordered for me. I didn't look at the menu to see what it was. Opened my horizons and just ate. Perfection. I'm so glad I didn't get scared off.

Wow I came here because I saw so many stars and stayed at the hotel and people said this is the spot for hibachi and sushi and this is a good spot. lol if you been to places that really do hibachi and sushi I stayed at. this is no hibachi or sushi I'm sorry but Idaho falls have better sushi restaurant!!

Went here on a whim for lunch. It was really good! The bento box lunch was a really good deal and even though it looked like a small amount of food I wasn't even able to finish it. The tempura pork was good, the sauce they put on it was fantastic! The green beans dipped in soy sauce were really good too as was the California roll. I'm looking forward to coming back to try more sushi. Cool find and now definitely somewhere I'm going to make a regular stop when I visit! Update: Went again for lunch and had the Chief Pocatello roll. Holy cow it's awesome and even waaaay better than the California roll. Also had the raw octopus which was surprisingly mild and meaty. Defiantly a new stopping place for me when I'm in town!

Will not eat here again....teriyaki chicken was okay, fried rice tasted of old oil, very greasy, tempura was very heavy and California roll was not only a mess, but tasteless

  • Charles B.

Sashimi and sushi is of a quality comparable to much more expensive and distant restaurants though they lack some of the higher-end choices, such as blue fin.

This was a very nice place. I did have to wait 10mins for a table but i can not blame them because it was so busy. I had about 5 different rolls including their miso soup. Everything came out at a nice pase. I ordered the calamari rings as an appetizer it was tasty. However, it could have used a longer time in the fryer and extra spices. The lemon was a perfect touch. The California roll was not a favorite but the server let us get another roll instead. the cali roll was a little to plain for us. A great tip would be maybe add shredded crab with mayo for a better texture. Other than those 2 things i really enjoyed my time there. The miso soup was so nice on a rainy day. the green tea was nice and hot to.The service was amazing and Nikki was a phenomenal server. I will return.

Sumisu was a lucky find for us in Pocatello, ID. Never thought we would find sushi in this quiet place, but there it was. Seems their two year anniversary will be on December 06, 2012. Simple design inside, a lot bigger than it looked from outside. If you want sushi, sit at the bar, it is well worth it. Both chefs working the bar that day were a pleasure to talk with as they kept us entertained and our plates full. We tried at least 8 different rolls, including the following: Ghost roll - Ghost pepper Aioli made in house is no where near as hot as i feared, and had a nice smoky flavor to go along with this roll. A good one to try. Salmon River roll - Creamier than I expected, but still a good blend of flavors. The slice of chili pepper on top gave it a nice kick Godzilla roll - Their version came out nice. Easy to find a version of this roll in restaurants and this didn't disappoint. Emperor roll - Light and refreshing, very nice late in the meal. All of the food out of the kitchen also looked good, but there was no room left to try any. The bento boxes were a good deal and looked great for lunch. The miso salmon also went by... so tempting. If I ever have business in the area again, I will have to stop by and check up on this wonderful little restaurant. Support them and help them grow their fan base and their menu for everyone to enjoy.

Too much goop on the rolls! Not authentic Japanese . This is American Sushi! Tonkatsu is pretty good though.

  • Amber H.

I went to Sumisu expecting amazing sushi from the Yelp reviews... not so much. The Tiny Dancer was okay, but not fabulous, and certainly not worth $13. My husband had the Godzilla roll, and I'm pretty sure that is what had him puking the next day. The spicy tuna was VERY fishy tasting. The booths had these weird super short seats that I was afraid I'd slide off. The presentation of the kids menu food was cute.

Could have been 3 stars if the waitress did her job correctly.....it wasn't busy 2 or 3 tables but she forgot part of are food no refills no water and we had to share a paper napkin cause she kept forgetting to bring some. When we finally was like hey where's the rest of the order she was oh there is more looked over the check and said I must have forgot smiled and batted here lashes and looked coy like that fixes everything (honey grow up we're not collage boys sooner or later it's not gonna work and you will have to do your job instead of talk in the back room) we just asked for the check. ghost roll .... I was expecting something a little spicy it was bland... no flavor Tuna tartar .... The better of the two but still just ok Edamame .... was pretty good with a hint of garlic Seafood bisque ... was pretty good too... a little spice to but it was really really thick Gyoza ... was greasy Miso soup ... Was good So if you want edamame and soup this is your place!!!! I just want to scream!!!!! Wipe That Silly F@@king Smile Off Your Silly F@@king Face

We enjoyed a nice dinner at Sumisu over the holidays. The food was tasty and well done, the service was excellent, and the prices reasonable. Will definitely go back on our next visit to Pocatello.

I love sushi I really do. But everytime I come here the service is so terrible. All the waiters and waitresses act like they have better things to do like flirt with each other or text on their phones besides serve your table. the sushi is ok not the greatest I mean they don't really cater well to what you would like unless they charge you more and there are ready overpriced for small town my Pocatello. I've had sushi in Salt Lake City that was a hundred percent better than this place and was half the price. I have also had a girls night out one time when we were speaking loud at our table and I had one of the chefs actually tell me to lower my voice I was just mortified!

  • Chuck M.

It takes a lot of hard work to achieve 5-stars...and this place is doing it. Nice and comfortable interior, but no music in the dining area...only some 50's rock and roll flowing from the bar. Great service...it is nice to have someone ask how you dinner is...and keeps your glass filled. This is customer service 101...and he deserves a nice tip...!!! So, the food was real good...I had the tempura shrimp roll (excellent), spicy tuna roll (pretty good!!), and the well rated "Godzilla Roll"...that turned out to be something different than what my mind thought it would be...bur it was great. The only down part is that I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to put my food in...and my wife (and friends too) will say that I have a fairly big mouth...LOL. I may need to eat here tomorrow...!!!

  • Claire F.

The food here is FABULOUS!!! This is a great place to try sushi for this first time, or if you have just had the nasty stuff from Fred Meyer like most Pocatello peeps..... I now live in Chicago and have become quite the sushi lover, so on my visit back to Poky recently I gave this place a try. I am SO happy I did, and it puts some fierce competition on the sushi in downtown Chicago! I loved all of the following: Tiny Dance Roll ..........(best best best) Ghost Roll.........this was a special on the chalk board Ceviche Seafood Bisque...............so rich and delicious! I would go here every weekend if I lived in Poky!

This is one of my favorite places in Pocatello. You get a good amount of food (especially for lunch if you get the bento box). They have several options. I love the appetizers. The spring rolls are delicious! As is the tempura. The salads tend to be over dressed, but the dressing is light and good, so I don't mind. The three veggie options in the bento are all good. The house soup is a bit disappointing but still good if you are looking for a light option. The bisque is good, but very rich. I really like the Tiny Dance Roll and the Pure Bliss Roll--but all I have tried are pretty good. The Eugene Roll is weird for me with the lime. My one complaint is the way they call their food from the kitchen (I have only noticed this once, but it was annoying). They don't have a system to let the waitstaff know their food is up besides their voices...so it get load and annoying if they are putting out a lot of food (specifically if you are in seated by the kitchen). It is nice to see something like this surviving in Pocatello. Since Senang is gone (don't waist your time at the Brick) this is where I would take a first date in town.

Amazing sushi.,.. The house soup a bit like French onion but the sushi was fresh and tasty!

Let me see if I have this straight, I have to move 2000 miles away before Pocatello gets a sushi restaurant? I'm not exaggerating (I google-mapped it)--and on top of that, it's a GOOD sushi restaurant? I lived here 28 years with no sushi and the second I move, in comes Sumisu. That's some cold shit. (Ok, that's the end of my rant.) Here's the review: This place is awesome. I got the Godzilla roll--crab, spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, asparagus, topped with seared tuna, and a soy and wasabi aioli. All the ingredients were fresh, the tuna was great, and the aioli was absolutely amazing (they should bottle it). Let me talk about size. It didn't even occur to me that "Godzilla" would be referring to the size of the roll. It was the biggest sushi roll I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, it may have been a foot long and over two inches wide. I couldn't even finish half of it, I had to get a box! My husband got the Tonkatsu bento box which came with soup, salad, tempura vegetables, rice, and a California roll. All of that for $7, which is pretty amazing. My only negative comment would be on the edamame we had for an appetizer. It was very oily...a bit too much butter for me, although my husband loved it. Yummy Japanese food at a very reasonable price, how can you beat that? note: they don't have alcohol and I didn't ask if they were OK with byob, I'll update next time I go in and have a chance to ask.

What a wonderful find at the end of a long day of driving. We are in the middle of a long road trip from Texas and stopped here based on Yelp reviews - so glad we did! Everything was delicious (highly recommend the edamame with garlic butter and coarse salt, ahi cucumber salad, and china doll roll) and the service was great. Kids teriyaki chicken was a big hit (and mom was glad it was served with fruit and fresh carrots). The restaurant also did a nice job accommodating the gluten-free needs in our group (gluten-free soy sauce and a separate menu listing gluten-free options). Definitely go if you're in Pocatello!

Great sushi, not just for Pocatello, but anywhere. Sashimi is great. Excellent sushi rolls. Good variety of options for sushi and Asian fusion. A surprising find in East Idaho.

Looking for food in a college town? Go to downtown that looks like a ghost town. Found this place on Yelp and saw the "Asian Fusion" on the window. No Asians, except us. Great food. The salad looked so colorful and really tasted good. The salmon was perfectly done, flaky. Servers were helpful and cool. We sat in a booth and felt like we had our little oasis, even though we only had 4 people and it sits 6.

Definitely a fusion of cultures here! Coming from Hawaii my expectations are high, however this place makes killer sushi. The fish is very fresh, the su-chefs know their game very well. Waiters are polite and speedy!

Who would have guessed that you'd find good sushi in the middle of Idaho! Sumisu is pleasantly surprising and provides a wide variety of specialty rolls and quality sushi. Also, the restaurant has recently expanded and has lots of seating and a nice, new interior. I was with a group of 6, and we started with several appetizers, all of which we enjoyed. These included crab rangoon, tuna tartare on rice cakes, ceviche, and steamed mussels. For our main course we enjoyed the following rolls: super rainbow roll, tiny dancer roll, ghost roll, and a couple others I can't remember. Every single roll was delicious and well made.

Had a problem with their waitress calling me a liar. She said soup came with the meal, then she charged me extra for the soup. Brought it to her attention, she replied that she always mention that the one specific soup I ordered with my meal cost extra. I looked across the table at my guest and she agreed that was never brought up. She still charged me extra and no tip was left. Nobody appreciates being called a liar. Haven't been back since.

I have eaten at nice sushi restaurants in larger cities, even near the coast, and this one rivals those. I love sushi. A lot. And this place is fantastic. Great ambiance, fabulous food and a great wine selection. The service is a bit slow but that's probably just due to the quality you receive. Totally worth the trade off.

Great sushi bar! I brought my6 year old son and he ordered off the kids menu. It was the coolest kids dish I have ever seen! He ate it all!

Well, my next visit was just a few nights ago. Thankfully, it was better than my first time! The rice was was better; but still, "off". I don't think it was very authentic. I've had a lot of good sushi in my life to compare Sumisu's to. Our service was also much better than my first experience. I ordered three rolls, and liked two of them. The tiny dancer roll (which I got last time) was chalky tasting. I'm pretty sure it was the shrimp tempura inside. I may go back another time, but I will probably avoid anything with tempura in it. For the quality I still think this place is overpriced. I had trouble deciding between two or three stars for this review but decided on three out of five since two of my rolls were pretty good tasting. The authenticity was lacking a bit though due to the rice. Sumisu, fix your rice please! I was happy to see some Grand Teton local beers in bottles available too! Notice: Sumisu's review rating distribution is super strange.

I've had sushi all over the country and this is as good as I've had anywhere. Our table had the Godzilla, Kamikaze, Tiny Dancer, and Rainbow Roll. They were all very very good and would highly recommend. Great staff. We will be back to this Pocatello gem!

Good sushi for a smaller town. Not a large selection but it was good. Fair prices and meat was fresh. Interesting combos and a large selection of cooked sushi if that's what you're into.

This is awesome sushi for any city. Awesome rolls, bento, appetizers and saki selection. Great place to go on a date or with a party. It gets busy during peak times but totally worth the wait and very attentive service. Yes, this is happening in Pocatello, ID.

Love the food, Love the atmosphere! If you like sushi but not raw meat, Sumisu has great fully cooked rolls...The dragon roll is my favorite!

  • Kody M.

I have eaten here a few times and I LOVE the food. The Teppanyaki reminds me of the food I at in the Japan pavilion in EPCOT. The Bento Box lunches at fun and very good. lots of amazing flavors! The edamame is amazing and my favorite roll is a tie between Sawtooth and Tiny Dancer roll. The only reason I give this place a 3 is the service. There is nothing more annoying to me than walking into a place and being ignored. The last time I was in the waiter never refilled our drinks and I watched our food sit on the counter, while he had a smoke break. Our food all arrived at the same time, sushi roll, starter, and meal, which meant we did not get the soup that was supposed to come with the meal. The first time I came here the service was great, but the longer its been open the worse the service has become. I am sure there are great servers there, I just haven't had the good luck to find one of them yet.

Delightful staff, fun atmosphere and fantastic sushi, all in this quaint little town! Prices are also very fair.

A nice surprise. Inventive dishes, prepared well. Wait staff is attentive without hovering. My only, very minor, suggestion is better parking. The lot next to the building is tight and street parking is iffy.

  • Judy S.

Surprisingly pleasant find for Idaho. The sushi rolls were very good. The salt and pepper calamari was crisp and tasty and the fried tempura banana with ice cream was a great ending.

We finally had a chance to return to Sumisu last night, and I must update my review to add a star. While I still lament the lack of sake or Japanese beer, the food has evolved to be truly outstanding. Between the two of us, we enjoyed delicious teppanyaki, two sushi rolls, a marvelous ceviche, and the best mussels in cream sauce that I've ever had the pleasure of eating. This was hands-down the best meal that I've had in Pocatello in about 5 years!

Because Pocatello has limited choices for restaurants, not to mention the location aspect, I was expecting to get sick from the sushi. To clear the air, that wasn't the case. The interior was of simple decor, with a couple of pictures on the wall behind me, loved the thin black frames by the way. There were four of us seated in the table right in the middle when you first walk in.. so much for privacy as I could easily tapped tapped the guy at the table behind me without moving an inch; might as well allow the sake to kick in while in the spotlight of a fishbowl in bumf*** Idaho.. (nothing against it, I'm just used to the city of angeles) Their edamame was tasty with the butter garlic mixture with coarse salt sprinkles, just a little too much butter for my taste. I'd prefer just garlic and a little salt w/ soy sauce and wasabi = perfecto. I had the chef's special on 08/20/2011, the Ghost roll. It was a spicy tuna roll with avocado and topped with a small bit of seared ahi tuna and some sirracha. There was more to the roll in the way of sauces and what-not, but if you like sirracha and spicy tuna, get it.. I also tried the China Doll, I wasn't impressed. The Ceviche appetizer was very good too, so another recommendation there. Oh and we had those little crab/cream cheese wontons; those didn't blow my tastebuds out of the water, but they were good. What did take the cake, or should I say, I took the whole cake when it came to Ty Ku .. sake !! Yum yum and yum .. Junmai ginjo, ran about $22 for 330mL .. Highly recommended and please do some sake bombs with it :)

  • Rob W.

Good sushi overall. Not a lot of custom roll options, I might be a little spoiled by California sushi shops that set the bar a little high. Service was great, good atmosphere (playing rock music, hate when sushi places feel the need to play Kenny G). A good experience, I'd go back for sure.

What a find! Did not expect such a good meal in Pocatello. If you like your Japanese more traditional, look for the offerings with no cream cheese and avoid the gloppy sauces. Incredible tempura- light as a feather. And the seafood bisque, though probably not Japanese, was one of the best soups I have ever tasted. I am a frequent business traveler and dine well all over the country. I would happily return. One note- did not get any raw fish. I simply do not do that in places I don't know or in non- major cities.
