Looking for good Mexican food in a relaxed and enjoyable family environment? Your search is over. Despo's caters to the traditional large-platter burrito plus rice & bean lovers, and also to kids with a great coloring kids menu. And it also has excellent seafood and vegetarian offerings. I had the vegan zucchini burrito (with added cheese), and found the grilled vegetables crunchy and tasty. It was enormous, and I could only finish half of it! My wife's grilled shrimp salad was mouthwatering and also quite generously portioned. The kids loved their chicken enchiladas and nachos. One star off for the straight-from-the-bottle Cuervo premixed margaritas. Should have handmade drinks and a top-shelf option! Overall, though, it was an excellent meal.

We come to Sun Valley often and have tried most of the restaurants in Ketchum and at the Sun Valley resort. Despo's stands out for its great food, prompt and courteous service, and kid-friendliness. Price is reasonable. If this were Zagat I would give food: 26, service: 25, ambience: 24.

You can't give a place like Despo's 5 stars, because it's not a 5 star restaurant! That said, it's as good as it gets for Mexican food. There is fresh fish every night. I don't do beans and rice and I'm never disappointed with ala carte entrees. The salads are huge, fresh, and tasty! Of course chips and fresh homemade salsa are a must! It' always busy with locals and tourists! A must every time you're in town!

Despo's is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The portions are huge and the staff is friendly. Not to mention the free salsa and chips. Great place!

My husband and I were a little shocked to learn that our old standby for good Mexican food while in Sun Valley, Desperado's, recently changed their name to Despo's. We asked the waitress why the owner would do such a thing and she said she wasn't quite sure either, but thought he was just changing with the times. A big strange? Yeah, we thought so too.... We were more than pleased that the only thing that's changed at Desperado's (um, I mean Despo's) is the name. Same addicting chips, same addicting salsa, and I think the shrimp burrito may have even been better than I remembered...if that's even possible! Oh, and apparently changing with the times means this green friendly restaurant no longer does takeout as well. But not a big deal for us since fighting the crowds at Desperado's (grrr Despo's- one day I'll get it) is part of the fun.

This was a surprisingly good Mexican restaurant. Coming from Texas I was a bit skeptical. I had the chicken carnitas which were excellent, as was the service.

Great variety and creative menu. Loved the zucchini in the zucchini burrito. But everything was somewhat bland. Needs a little more spice and flavor. Maybe some cilantro, cumin or lime? I really wanted to give Despo's 4 stars because of the good quality ingredients, green initiatives, and veggie options. But it just really wasn't that delicious. Very loud inside. Nice outdoor seating - much quieter.

After a week long backpacking trip in the Sawtooths, we took the hungry clan to Despo's in Ketchum. Actually there was a Labor Day street fair thing going on everywhere and we kind of stumbled onto Despo's. Now maybe my review is slanted because we were four hungry backpackers! The chips are good (not outstanding, but good). But the salsa, especially the medium pico de gallo salsa was outstanding. The best I have ever had. We also ordered fresh quacomole that was very good but a little on the expensive side for the portion they give you. The three men with me all ordered the Steak Ranchero Thing special and they all consumed every bit of it and talked about it the next morning. The steak was the most tender they have ever had. They all ordered refried beans with the meals and those were good but the rice was just ok. I ordered a King Salmon Taco and a Pulled pork taco and both were very good. I wanted dessert but Despo's does not serve dessert! Boo! Deep fried ice cream would have been great after a week in the backcountry. But I survived. This must be one of the more popular places in town as there was a crowd and a waiting list. If we drive thru Ketchum again, we would most definitely stop at Despo's for mexican eats!

Pretty good tex-mex. It is probably the best Mexcian food in the Sun Valley area. I am from Utah orginally so I have been spoiled when it comes ot Mexican food. That being said the meat is well seasoned and the fresh chips come hot to the table. It is a great environment for large groups and families.

I think that Despos has the freshest, most high qualtiy food of most fine dining restaurants in the area. The shrimp is Mexican and Wild, the beef and pork all natural and the owner is a true foodie who knows what he's doing. There is no corner cut here! Great American Mexican with high quality food that can't be topped. Highly recommend.

We stumbled upon Despos this evening after watching Avatar at the Magic Lantern. Despite the crowd, the staff was super friendly and served us large margs while we waited to be seated--a plus, instead of opening a tab they just add your ordered drinks next to your name on the wait list so that you don't have to pay at the bar. The food is advertised as 'Mexican with Attitude' and definitely delivered. We started off with outstanding salsa plus their homemade guacamole and chips...I enjoyed a wonderful shrimp taco, grilled fish taco along with the side of black beans and rice...while my partner in crime had the pollo (chicken) burrito--described as 'yummmmmm' in one word. Not to drop names but to prove Despos is the place to be, we ate right next to 'Detective John Kimble'.... :)

I was a little turned off by the "cheap 80s hotel restaurant" atmosphere, but was pleasantly surprised by the Green menu and fresh ingredients. Minus one star for the bad atmosphere and minus one star for no frozen or strawberry margaritas....

Good, fresh Americanized Mexican food! Creative menu and all tasty!! FAV is KMT salad w/ grilled mahi-mahi on top. Good, quick and friendly service.

One of the more moderately priced restaurants in town. Overall, good food, perhaps bordering on 4 stars, but overall, Despo's lacks a certain kick or flare that I would expect from the best Mexican food. The tortilla soup is well recommended, but I recently had the shrimp tacos, which were surprisingly bland. Beware of long waits, especially around dinner hour.

The best Mexican food in SV/Ketchum. Period. Except, now that I think of it, I can't think of any other Mexican restaurants... but even if I could, Desperado's would still be the best. A bit of a wait sometimes, but worth it.

My favorite Mexican place in Ketchum. Always good food with plenty of choices on the menu (even vegan offerings). The chips, I really can never stop eating! Must go to!

Best chips and salsa in Ketchum, but the food is overpriced and average. But then again, I am from San Diego so I am used to MUCH better Mexican food.

I came hear after reading such good reviews and it was as good as they say! The grilled mahi mahi tacos were FANTASTIC! Usually you get these little bits of fish- not here- large servings of fresh tasting fish in each taco with jalapeno tartar- yum!!! The guacamole was fresh and the chips/salsa were great as well. I would suggest anyone to try this place. I was there on a Monday night and the place was packed- I can see why:) I'll be back again for work and will make sure to come again. I also love the mission of the company with sustainable and local focus- we need more restaurants to get on board with this!

No dogs allowed on patio? Fine, but I have to subtract a star for that. No "to go", fine but since I couldn't have my dogs join me, it would have been nice to enjoy it at a park bench. BUT, the food was decent. Staff is friendly.

Ordered enchilada and tostada many plates have a split charge of $1.50, so we didn't split, LOL. It's a busy restaurant and we had to wait in line, the food is good, the service is EXCELLENT. Very popular with families and kids so be prepared to wait. Room is average, it can get a bit loud but value is good and food is A-OK.

Great service and unlimited chips and salsa for 99 cents! This sit-down-and-eat restaurant is great. The service is very fast and the food comes out the kitchen quickly and hot. The medium salsa is a great start to your meal because the spiciness-level sure does open up your palette. I ordered some chicken enchiladas with rice and beans-- my go to. The chicken was dark meat and cooked to perfection. The chips were also a great tool to scoop up my rice, salsa, and beans to create a crisp with every bite! Despo's is a great restaurant with fast service and a nice outdoor patio to enjoy the serene and slowed-down surroundings.

These are some seriously good tacos. Carne asada with guacamole, onions and cilantro... Yum! Friendly service and a nice patio to sit outside. A great find in Ketchum.

What attracted us right away to this place was the outdoor seating! Gorgeous day...why not take advantage of it! We ordered the Mahi Tacos with a side of beans and rice and we absolutely LOVED the food. With the salsa and chips you can get some other stuff and we got the side of jalapeños and carrots and we couldn't get enough! Very good service, food, and atmosphere!

Wonderful food and great service - I had the best Chili Verde burrito I have ever had - but it was the special and not on the menu. My wife had a cheese enchilada which she said was much better than the average. I highly recommend this place.

A solid 3.5 stars. I've found myself here twice while in town. The first time I grabbed lunch outside (ordered the KTM salad with chicken, deliciousness in a bowl). The ingredients were fresh and I barely used any of the dressing as to not obscure the wonderful flavors in the salad. The second visit JP and I went for dinner. Looking for a casual bite to round out Labor Day weekend. After taking our drink orders we were informed they were out of shrimp (and I had been eying the shrimp taco), beef (of any kind), and later when my taco was delivered, no tomatoes. We were told they served over 200+ lunches that day so I am not going to fault them too much for being out of some stuff at 8ish on a Monday night after a holiday weekend. We started with an order of chips and salsa (tried the house, fresca and verde). Loved the fact that the chips weren't greasy or too salty. The salsas were all tasty and the verde definitely had a little zip to it. For dinner JP ordered the zucchini burrito wet while I opted for the mahi mahi taco with a side of rice and beans. Bonus that I was able to order both refried and black. I love not having to choose just one. The place was packed for a Monday but service was still pretty solid (I had to ask twice for a water). The interior decor is a bit bland and feels sort of like it could be a chain in the midwest (but I know it's not). Go for the food not the ambiance. I would definitely recommend Despos for healthy, Mexican food while in Ketchum. And yes, I did just use healthy and Mexican in the same sentence.

We always go here twice in one week while vacationing. The kids love it and they are always good to them. Maybe it is the mountain air or the elevation, but everything just tastes fresher here. The salsa is fantastic and can be bought at the local grocery store (we always bring home a few).

The first time I came here, I got the shrimp carnitas and the shrimp were large and crisp, very tasty. The guacamole here is quite good as well. The next time I came, I ordered the Mojo de Ajo but they were out of mushrooms, so they sent somebody to the store to get some for me. Nice!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
