Super good Mexican Food! Love the chips salsa and slaw before the meal and the cinnamon sugar chip with whipped and ice cream after the meal too!

One can't expect much when in search for good Mexican food in Northern Idaho. That said, my expectations were pretty low. For the most part however, I was pleasantly surprised. My small combination plate was plenty large, the tamale and chile relleno were actually decent though not great- decent though. The service was friendly and swift. The chips good, the salsa...... Humm, I'll try and be kind here...... was just a step above catsup! Fortunately though, when asked, they were indeed willing to whip up some much hotter stuff on request. I suspect the majority of the population of this geographic region can't handle the real stuff when offered up! The new salsa saved the evening! My lovely wife however, was not as impressed! She said her burrito was far too wet- with some liquid, not resembling salsa... And she was NOT pleased! Oh well...... It's North Idaho, it's not a full on chain, there were friendly Spanish speaking hosts, they whipped up some decent salsa on request, and can make a pretty tasty relleno! 3 stars..... I might mention that my visit was a couple of months ago.

If you have lived in CA, AZ, NM, Texas etc then you know what "great Mexican food" taste like. You possibly have even had "authentic Mexican" cuisine. If the above is true AVOID this eatery - you will be disappointed. "Ranch Viejo" falls short in many areas. Flavor, authenticity, presentation, etc. The food here comes out fast (think fast food quality) is dropped on the table and WYSIWYG. Therefore: If you want fast food, a family friendly place and oK service AND IF quality is not an issue then you have found a Idaho-Mex place!

In our quest to find decent Mexican food in north Idaho my wife and I tried Rancho Viejo in Hayden. The parking lot is often full, so we had high hopes. Sorry to say the food was not very good at all. My wife couldn't even finish her flan, and she loves flan. All I can figure is that people go for happy hour, which seems like a reasonable deal. It also has a pretty authentic Mexican restaurant vibe. Too bad the food isn't better.

What some are calling " cabbage pico" is actually a spicy Mexican slaw served before the meal, it is delicious! They have traditional pico. They also have 2 salsas, 1 is very mild and tomatoey, my little granddaughter scarfed it up! The other is quite spicy! I like to mix them and add a squeeze of lime (or the dressing from the slaw!) My son said the ground beef tacos were really good. I had my chicken mole as usual and our guest said that is what she would pick the next time!

My friend and daughters and I were in Hayden and really wanting Mexican. But unfamiliar with the area looked up some reviews and decided to give it a try. FANTASTIC! The food was excellent. But what really stood out was the outstanding service. My friend is a bar manager at a fine dining restaurant and I'm a chef who has worked for some high profile chefs so we kind of go rough on our reviews. But this place. At this time. Was top notch. I will definitely be returning to see how they do again. Oh and for the food.

The food was very, very good. Happy hour has a great deal two margaritas for $6.00. Can't go wrong there. The seafood enchiladas in flour tortillas were the best. Would recommend them all day long. They came with a little dessert also. Service was great.

Great food. We had the Carne Asada and Pork Verde. The chips are fresh. The pico is an unusual blend of cabbage, onions, lime etc. The only problem is their salsa.. If you opened a can of tomato sause and threw it in a bowl, it might taste better than this bland (definitely unmexican) what passes for salsa. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. When you walk in, it smells like a urinal cake. The food is rancid tasting and the manager is rude. I will never go back...

Cool & Authentic looking atmosphere! chips & Salsa tasted wonderful. Food service was just "OK". Our server wasn't super attentive & seemed put out by our arrival. The main course of ground beef enchilada, ground beef taco, beans & rice came out on a hot plate quicker then the Taco Bell drive through, yet tasted worse.

Can't speak for all the food at this place BUT it had the worst seafood plates I have ever had. I had the fish something and my wife had shrimp something. Absolutely the worst food I can remember having. But I have to say that I brought it to the attention of the server and he took the price of my meal off the tab. So that was good of them, and the service was good. It's just that the meal was terrible.

The food is barely passable and lacks flavor - the quality seems to have taken a nosedive recently. One of us ordered fish enchiladas, but left them on the plate because the fish was old and had that awful smell that screamed: don't eat it. The manager offered to "only charge for the beans and rice!" rather than comping the meal. An interesting - but offensive - approach here is that the wait staff speaks Spanish to all customers, even though it is evident that the majority of the customers speak English. They persist in making you ask them to repeat themselves in English, and seem to be proud of their attempts to put Americans in their place - no matter how many times you have to ask to have questions/comments to be repeated in English, they just keep on with the Spanish-only approach. I don't care that the staff is from another country, but if you are making your living from dealing with English-speakers (and you can obviously speak English) why put your attitude out there and push people away? There were four of us, and each of us came to the same conclusion . . . ADIOS!

If you want THE BEST mexican food, drive to Priest River and eat at Mi Pueblo. Because you definitely won't find it here at Rancho Viejo. The salsa tastes like canned tomato sauce, no flavor. The cabbage pico de gallo they serve with the chips is pretty good though. The vegetarian burrito was pretty bland. Service was not bad, but there were very few people there. A bit expensive for what you get.

This is the only Mexican food in North Idaho I enjoy eating. Being from border town Arizona I know legitimate Mexican food. I always order the Mexican style carne asada tacos and they are fantastic. Excellent staff, great atmosphere and quick service. As the manager says every time on the way out, I will "See you tomorrow" :)

Don't bother... Had a horrible experience with service and food. Manager/owner simply told us they were extremely busy, that if we owned our own place we would understand... understand what? That it is ok to give crappy service and food if you are busy? Never again.

We recently moved here from California, were there are many fine "Mexican Restaurants". My husband and I this weekend tried Rancho Viejo. The decor is very bright colored and a little on the tacky side. The seats in the booths could be a bit more comfortable as they are gently worn down with age and use. The chips were crisp, warm and tasty. They served us 2 salsas, one was mild and the other was hot; both fresh, nicely seasoned and tasted great. My husband had the combination plate made up of two cheese enchiladas, a shredded beef taco and rice. He described the meal as very good and said it compared very favorably to the taste and quality of food we are used to. I had their Rancho Viejo Burrito with shredded beef, which has beans, rice, lettuce, melted cheese, sour cream and avocado. It too was very tasty. Your dinner entree includes a house speciality dessert of a light cinnamon baked wafer topped with vanilla ice cream drizzled with both chocolate and strawberry sauces. What a nice ending to your meal. We would recommend this restaurant and will be back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
