I've always loved Janet's...until tonight. We went in for last call trivia (our first time doing trivia at Janet's). When we arrived, we ordered beers and asked for glasses of water. The waitress told us that because of the high volume of people they expected for trivia, they only sold bottles of water on Wednesday nights. Her excuse was, their ice machine couldn't keep up with the amount of mixed drinks the bar makes, plus ice water for the customers. We were fine with that (my friends and I all work in the restaurant industry, and we know sometimes certain appliances - like ice machines - can't always handle the rushes). So we asked for plain old tap water, with no ice. The waitress told us that wasn't allowed and the only way we could get water was to buy bottles of water. Umm, what? Are you kidding me? I'm not familiar with Idaho water laws in relation to restaurants, but...I have never, EVER, in all my time working in restaurants heard of a business refusing to give a table TAP WATER. Not to mention, a few minutes later, we saw her taking out big glasses of what was unmistakably ice water to other tables. And, it wasn't all that busy tonight. I've seen it way more packed at Janet's than it was this evening, and I've been able to get a glass of water - with ice! - during busy nights. So we were pretty irritated, but willing to get over it, because the trivia was fun and the beers were great. At the end of our night, we asked to close our tabs, and only then did the waitress tell us, "We have to add a dollar charge onto your cards, since you're using cards instead of cash tonight, just so you know." I've been going to Janet's for years. They have a $10 minimum on cards, which I feel is pretty standard and fair. I have never once been charged an extra dollar to use a card during my times there. When we asked the waitress about it, she said the company policy has been in effect for two years, and that the employees get in a lot of trouble if they don't add the amount onto credit/debut card tabs (which apparently goes to cover the cost of running cards in the first place). First of all - if Janet's wanted to be a cash only bar, whether just for trivia nights or for any transaction, that needed to be said at the very beginning of the night - NOT as we were trying to leave and didn't have cash on us. It was only $1, but the fact that no one told us about it...and didn't give us the chance at the beginning of the night to, say, go get cash for our tabs...that's not right. Second, the fact that it's been "company policy" and yet, none of us has ever been charged this? And we've been going for years? I call bullshit. If you're trying to make some extra money off the people who come in for trivia nights, Janet, that's a pretty poor way to say thank you to the customers who come in and keep your bar busy for a few hours. Third, I've worked for all different kinds of restaurants - corporate and locally/family-owned. Even in the locally owned restaurants, we never, EVER charged people for choosing to use a credit/debit card over cash. When we asked the waitress why we were being charged extra when we've been coming to Janet's for years and have never had that happen, she said "Oh, they probably just assumed you knew about the charge, so they just added it without telling you." Even if that were remotely true, what an awful business practice!!! "Hmm, these people come in and spend their hard earned money buying drinks and food at our bar - let's sneak an extra dollar here and there without saying a damn word, and see if we get caught!" The waitress was very pleasant, and I realize none of this is her fault - she doesn't make the rules - however, the fact that she kept adding charge after charge, for no reason she could adequately explain, was completely and utterly ridiculous. And taking tap water out to your other tables, after telling someone you'd only bring them bottled water you'd have to charge them for? Not okay. Like I said, I'm in the restaurant industry and I know how it is. I'm usually pretty lenient on servers when I go out to eat and drink, because you never know if they're getting their asses kicked or are struggling in some way. But what we experienced tonight was terrible. Needless to say, I'm extremely disappointed in Janet's - a place I've always enjoyed going to in the past. We won't be coming back, and you can be damn sure we'll be letting others know about the terrible service we received tonight.

Surprisingly good eats, reasonably priced drinks...a friendly neighborhood pub on the Boise Bench.

We have played trivia here a few times and I've never been impressed with the food or restaurant. The drinks are fine, but the food is just not good. It's bar food, but seems overpriced for the quality. Good place to drink but save your money to eat elsewhere.

Amazing food and a great place to play pool. The atmosphere is inviting and always a TV available to watch whatever sporting event you want!

Outstanding food and service! This little gem is tucked into a small shopping center but the flavor is anything but small. Homemade soups and the prime rib dip is scrumptious! Be sure to check this place out, it's a wonderful spot

Janet's is a nice place with plenty of room to get your drink on. They have multiple pool tables and arcade games, but my favorite feature is the pitcher of quarters behind the bar. Customers can try their luck at throwing quarters from behind a line into the pitcher behind the bar for a chance to get a free drink. If it's a beer game, you can count me in! Although, there is a limit of two wins per night, but if you are on a roll you are welcome to keep shooting and go for the record. I don't need help throwing money away though. I can do it just fine buying my drinks. The brunch is very good and the female staff in particular are super friendly. If you're on Vista, stop in at Janet's.

I love my neighborhood bar. Pretty good food, friendly service (though sometimes slow), and reasonably priced. They have weird policies for credit cards. Sometimes they charge you extra and give you cash back...but it seems to depend on who is serving. Nonetheless, there is a lot to like about this place.

I love this place, the server is always friendly and the food is quite tasty. I have been her numerous times and have always left knowing I would be returning. Always someone to talk to and the bartenders know how to take care of you.

This bar is super trashy. Bartender was super unprofessional. Empty And gross. This bar doesn't even deserve a star.

Came here for the last stop of the Dive Bar Olympics. The previous stop was a little scary with an obvious tweaker lurking twitchy at the door and a guy screaming about being screwed out of money at the dart board... so I was mainly just hoping to find this place mostly safe and somewhat unscary. Jumpin Janets proved a breath of fresh air. The staff is prompt, efficient, and just plain likeable. The drinks were actually not bad. I mean, specify your vodka or you're likely to get served something that would be better served as a surface disinfectant than a cocktail, but do that and they'll mix a decent cocktail. They have pool, foosball, and a table for flip cup so it made for a great location for the olympics (the dive bar olympics is a heated competition of drunken 'atheletes' competing in teams for the honor of best overall bar gamer and the much coveted PBR can trophy). They also have a fun challenge where you stand behind a well marked line and toss quarters with the hopes of landing one in a designated pitcher, the prize being a free drink. After easily $5 in quarters and still no luck (I handily hit their television 3 times though!)...I decided purchasing a drink would be cheaper (though not nearly as fun). I didn't partake in their food but will say it smelled pretty rockin' and on the word of the other reviewers, looks like I'm going to need to come back and check it out! Overall, a fun evening was had by all!! Awesome!

It was pretty busy, but the bartender did a good job of keeping up with things. I was just looking for something for dinner and to grab a couple beers, so I stopped in. It must have been happy hour because the beer was at a really great price. Either that or Idaho doesn't charge as much for their beer to begin with. Beer was goo, no surprise there. I had a wrap sandwich with chili as my side. The chili may be from a can or something, but I'm actually okay with that. The wrap was good (no horseradish) and they actually grill the outside of it so it held together much better. All in all this was a pretty good place. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the add on fee for credit cards. It's the cost of doing business and it makes the owner look cheap. Get with the times!

The service at JJ's is always friendly and efficient. The joint has 4 pool tables and other entertainment units as well. The gas fireplace is just what daddy ordered on a cold winters night. I like the atmosphere here which tends to be 30 somethings with a smattering of folks on either side of that age group. Generally, it't a laid back neighborhood bar that seems to repel all but a few douche-bag types and those typically show up on the weekends. I ordered mu first meal here tonight and wasn't disappointed. More often than not one can tell how serious a place is about its food when the salad arrives. If they serve iceberg with shave carrots i know I'm in for a half-assed effort. JJ's salad was NOT iceberg. It wasn't fantastic but it was good.... especially for bar fare. The prime rib came with a potato or a "loaded" potato for 2 bucks more. It was pretty damned good and better than I expected. 4 Stars for a solid effort at a neighborhood watering hole.

This is not a bad place to hang out and play pool, but the female bartenders are always snarky and rude.

The good, the bad, and the ugly, this bar has it all. The good: their food is actually pretty good. In particular I really like their Walking Taco that is a weekly special and they have a very good selection of food items for a bar, beyond the basic fried food and wings. There are 4 pool tables which is nice and some Idaho Lottery machines to entertain you while you wait, cause you will wait. The trivia they feature on Tuesday and Wednesday can be fun also. The bad: the drinks and the food are overpriced for the quality and the servers are generally slow to bring either but especially the food. For only having a microwave and fryer it really shouldn't take that long. The ugly: the servers and bartenders here are so hit and miss it's almost not worth it to gamble on which one you'll get. One night I'll get a great server and be really excited that they are turning it around (probably fired/quit by the next week), the next night I get the pig-tailed Amazon (Dusty?) who looks like she'd rather spit on me than serve me a drink when I haven't even said hello yet. The bartenders are worse (middle aged, loud-mouthed curly-haired woman is the worst, Brandi?) and everyone in that bar brings their personal drama with them everywhere which is very obvious if you've been there more than once and it affects their ability to work. If you're looking for crappy service, mediocre entertainment, decent food, and high prices then Janet's is your place.

I've been here a few times and its usually pretty good. Tonight however I went in to have a few drinks with a friend and the bartender did last call 25 min early. After that she poured someone else a beer but when I asked for one she said that she didn't tell them that it was last call that's why she gave it to them. Basically she wanted to close up early which is fine but don't give some privileges and not others it's bad for business.

A fantastic place to hang out, and the food is incredible too! Nice beer selection. Fantastic made-from-scratch menu. On our last visit, my partner and I split the enormous appetizer platter and a burger. Everything was great! The entrees do not come with the typical side of fries or chips - they offer options like homemade chili, prime rib stew (awesome), mac 'n cheese, and tater salad to accompany the delicious burgers and sandwiches. Service has been friendly, fast, and fun every time.

My friends and I decided to pop in here for happy hour yesterday. I was very happy to see the "no smoking" sign on the door when I entered. I was also pleased to find happy hour is a double for $3- M-F 4-7. This particular evening table service was provided. The server was friendly and quick. After a couple of drinks, we thought it would be smart to order some food and were surprised by the menu options available- sandwiches, salads, and burgers. One friend ordered the spicy chicken sandwich ($6.75), while i shared a prime rib dip ($7.75)with the other friend. Both sandwiches came with a side salad. This being somewhat of a dive bar, we really didn't have high hopes for the food but were hungry. Well we were VERY surprised at what we got. The salad had romaine lettuce with tomatoes and grated cheese (no iceberg in sight!). The chicken sandwich wasn't a fried chicken patty but a chicken breast with a tasty sauce. The dip was an amazing amount of sliced prime rib, not deli meat in the least, served up on a tasty roll with a very nice au jus. I came here for the happy hour; I will return for the food!

Probably my favorite bar on the bench. It has a young neighborhood feel. They usually have Sockeye on tap. Friendly staff. Non-smoking. I haven't tried the food.
