I really like the Ha' Penny. A wee bit 'o the Old Country in Boise. The treat here is for the beer drinker. Where can you find Bass, Newcastle or Watney's, among others on tap? This is a real Irish Pub. Relaxed comfortable atmosphere and traditional food. Aye lad.

A few years back was in Boise and this was a spot a bunch of us gathered at. Its nothing fancy, an typical Irish Pub type spot, but in the heart of Boise. Good place to hang out, have drinks, and eat. If you are in the area go check it out, I think you'll enjoy your time there.

I ordered the Bangers and Mash. I'm a sucker for traditional irish food and this place is 180 the opposite. Firstly me and my wife ordered beers, it took 15 min to get them to us (not very irish at all). Okay but back to the bangers and mash, Bangers colcannon (mash) should be Banger Sausage served over potatoes (with cabbage) and a onion/beer gravy over it. This is what I expected seeing how this place was a Irish Pub Grill. What I get. A slab of potatoes with some spring onion flakes over them and a cut up bratwurst with a side of mustard. What the F**k is that? That isn't irish at all! Their Shepherds Pie is made with Beef and not lamb, and they have finger stakes as an Irish Favorite. This place is not to be mistaken for a place that serves Irish or even English food. This is a below average grill that has no pride in traditional irish meals. 1 Star and that's for environment

Terribly service, with TOO many mistakes and no apology. We went there with our work staff, about 15 people. Not an unmanageable number of people for two servers. It took 45 minutes to the first wave of our food. Yep, our food didn't come out at about the same time. There was 1 HOUR between the first plate that came out and the 2nd plate. And one of our staff members didn't even get her meal because she was tired of waiting! Half of the meals were wrong and had to be sent back. At the end when the bill was delivered there was NO compensation for all of the problems. AND they overcharged us by 3 meals! Will not be going back.

We stopped in for lunch during a weekday. The place was nearly empty which should have been the first indicator that it was not a hot lunch spot. The waiter/bartender seemed more intent on entertaining two ladies at the bar than to wait on the tables even though there were only three tables occupied. We ordered the pierogies and corn beef and cabbage. Portions were small considering the prices. $12.95 for four kielbasa medallion's four pierogies and a couple tablespoons of sauerkraut was high enough, but $14.95 for a near equal portion of corn beef and cabbage was, in my opinion, very high. The diet Cokes we ordered were flat. They obviously do a big business on Friday and Saturday evenings. I would not judge them entirely on my lunch experience. If you happen to be someone who enjoys going out on Friday or Saturday evenings to party this might be a good place. However, I would not return here for lunch.

I went in today during my lunch hour to meet a friend. The place was pretty empty except for a group of 8 watching a soccer match, and 2 girls who walked in after us. The only person bar tending and waiting tables took our order, but didn't take a drink order, so as he walked away I asked if I could get a diet coke. He brought it quickly. That was the last thing he did quickly. We had been sitting for a half hr and asked him about our food since we had to leave for work soon. He said sorry there's a soccer match on and those guys put their food in right before yours. We then asked for to go boxes and the check to speed things up. After 40-45 min our food came. My order was completely wrong. I let him know that and he asked me in a snarky tone what I wanted to do about it. I asked him, what do you mean? He said well do you just want to eat that or do you want me to make your salad? I didn't want black bean queso dip for lunch so I asked for my salad. By the time we got it, we had already paid and he handed me a to go box. I didn't even get to eat there! He said half hearted I'll buy you lunch next time you're in, sorry about this, wasn't expecting a soccer match. Then he walked off, without taking my name or giving a meal comp card. I got back to my office late by 10 min and was busy and couldn't eat. I tried calling but no one answered so I wrote a comment on Facebook. When I got off work I called and asked to speak to the manager. Turns out he's the manager. He said it was due to getting slammed by the soccer game, though the place was pretty empty. I said that I spoke to my husband and some office people and they all had the same experience. He said they're working on their scheduling issues. This time he took my name. I just checked my Facebook and he left a snarky remark about my friends groupon, and he's sorry he couldn't take it and if I had flagged him down he would have made it right. I wrote back I didn't know my friend had a groupon, I was upset with the service, rudeness, and the mix up of my meal, that I didn't get to eat lunch. It's a shame, it was my first time there, and the place looked awesome, but I've never had that bad of service before. Btw I never yelled, or got nasty with him. I was a manager before and I understand that it sucks when you're under staffed, but you can't be rude to customers because you're stressed out.

I was riding high on a few beers I had before getting here on our way to a concert (Drive By Truckers) at The Knitting Factory. My friend and I had just enough time for a beer before we went over. We found 2 seats up at the bar and each ordered up a Guniess. Service here was quick and friendly, even as busy as they were busy. My kind of cozy pub environment. Not too divey, (even though I love me a good dive)...and plenty of room through out. While I had hoped to check this out for St Patties (the next day) I found that my adventures in beer drinking that brought me here on 3/16 were too much for me to attempt a St Patty's day outting (well that and a Final Presentation required at work the next day.) I will surely be back ....

I'm not a drinker so I can't attest to that. But I can review the fish and chips. Don't expect anything like you get from the chippers back home in the motherland. If you come expecting glorified fish sticks and lukewarm chips then this place is for you! Even the malt vinegar is weak. Common folks! Let's pick it up a notch!

ok, all I have to say is... I have given this place numerous chances to change my feelings about it.. and numerous times it has let me down. Literally every time I have come here I have received the worst/slowest service I've ever received anywhere ever... but for some reason I keep giving them another chance...until now..I'm done for good. This truly is the worst restaurant I've ever been to.. and as a server that really is saying a lot. I get people being slammed and stressed because it's busy.. but this place plain does not give a s*** about anything at all. I'm surprised they are still I'm business with the way things are going here.. ticket times were outrageous , I'm watching table after table walk in without being greeting for up to 10 minutes by the server who could care less that she got quadruple sat while the server who has already been cut sits at the bar and watches her go down in flames as he rolls his 2 pieces of silverware and drinks his shift beer. our food came out as we ordered magically.. but then our server never once checked on us.. never filled our water. nothing . and then we waiting 30 min just to pay her after she finally noticed all of our empty dishes and water glasses stacked at the end of the table. anyways point is.. I officially hate this place. I will never go back. I do not recommend it whatsoever.. save your money.

My family is from Boise...so we headed here to get our minds off of "family stuff" for a moment. The beer was standard and expected. Glad they had Magners on tap. But the food was surprisingly SO good. Seriously grubbin' good!... I had the Shepard's Pie and it was seriously jam-packed with deliciousness. ( I really hope the potatoes were Idaho Potatoes.) it came in the skillet they cooked it in so there was yummy crunch on the edges. Then, as an added bonus...on Sunday nights they have a Traditional Irish Session that plays live around 7pm! My dad plays the Irish Drum (better known as the Bodhran) and he was greeted with open arms by the group. They jammed out for over an hour and I was seriously impressed. I highly recommend going there to see the Session play. Apparently, according to one member, the pub doesn't promote them very much and it's sad because they are all very talented! Getting hungry thinking about the food. Oh! and the Irish Coffee was deeee-lish!

My grandmother was from Kilkenny so when I saw that they had a Kilkenny Irish beer on tap I had to drink to toast to Bridgette. Slainte! The waiter/bartender was very friendly and looked after our needs while not getting in the way of a nice casual lunch. The Fish Bite appetizers are a must. Tempura battered cod, light, cooked perfectly and fresh. I had the Irish Stew on a hot day which doesn't seem to make sense but it was perfect. Very nice seasoning. We enjoyed this spot very much. It was very quiet when we were there, but understand it picks up around 3 for the happy hour.

Very quick service! Had the perogies! They were awesome. The Dublin dip was good too. The only thing is...It's an Irish pub and it should be more.... Irish. Show some Proper Football matches (soccer) then I would come all the time!!

This is your standard Irish pub - complete with a selection of beers from the other side o' the pond on draught and fish n' chips. Which is actually exactly what I got - minus the Irish beer. Came here for lunch on a slow day at work and got myself a regular order of their fish and chips. If you've been reading my reviews, I've been looking for a good fish and chips here in Boise for about a year and a half now... This place falls somewhere in the middle of the group. Not the greatest, but not the worst. At $9.95 for a regular order of Fish n' Chips (as opposed to their large order for $12.95), you get an okay amount of food. I got one large cod fillet and one small one stacked atop a mount of chips (not fries, chips - see the picture), some tartar sauce and a bit o' ketchup - no coleslaw here. I was pretty surprised to see chips... but they looked and tasted as if they were made fresh on site - crispy, hot, only a little greasy and definitely hand cut - there were some chips that went the whole length of a potato. The fish itself was okay - beer battered, panko-style breading. I think of the flour breading more than the breadcrumb style more when I think of fish n' chips. That being said, the fish wasn't too bad and the tartar sauce held up well to the fish. Overall, this seems like an okay place. Doesn't seem all the hopping for lunch - just two tables the entire lunch hour I was there. If you're looking for okay fish n' chips for lunch, you can drop by here. The service isn't too slow or terrible.

While in Boise for a meeting I had an evening to myself, and was looking for a good place to put my feet up, kick back with a beer or two, and enjoy the evening. I was actually looking for a different place when I stumbled across Ha'Penny, and since it was around the corner from my hotel I decided to give it a try. I expected it to be much more crowded than it was on a Friday night with a big college game going on, but, much to my surprise the crowd was pretty light. I sat at the bar and immediately struck up a conversation with the bartender and his friend from Germany who was in town visiting. There were several great beers on tap, and my friend behind the bar was kind enough to let me sample most of them, which alone warrants 4 stars. The food was just okay. Nothing outstanding, yet nothing horrible either..what do you want from bar food? I watched the game and enjoyed pleasant conversation, and even got a beer on the house. The only thing that was unpleasant was the cigarette smoke- Boise hasn't joined the no smoking inside club yet, and I found it even more intolerable than I used to. That being said, I still enjoyed my evening. If I'm ever back in Boise again I'll definitely stop in Ha'Penny for a draught or two.

I was in town visiting family and friends, and we "met up" at this place. The beer is standard for an Irish pub in the Pacific Northwest, which is to say it's pretty darn good. For food, I had the corned beef and cabbage and no complaints. The wait staff was really accommodating and friendly to our large group...at many places they hate to see the large groups come in (maybe on average the tips aren't as good or something), and it shows. Here it was exactly the opposite. They were really happy to see us and did everything they could to make sure we had a great time. The prices are about what you'd expect, so overall I highly recommend it.

My wife and I went to the BoneFish Grill for my bday, we asked to see the menu first and decided that $25 for fish in Boise was probably not going to be worth it. We noticed Ha Penny next door and decided to check it out. Very friendly service when we walked in, recommended a table for us and made sure we were comfy and happy. Brought out some great Irish beer right away out of their many choices. When we went to order food my wife ordered and the waitress was kind enough to let us know that she most likely wouldn't be happy with it. My wife had made some comments about what she liked and the waitress picked up on it and recommended something else for her. Very grateful for that. Food was awesome! Couldn't have enjoyed it more. Only downside was it took a while to get a second beer, but I can live. Would definitely recommend!

I recently discovered this awesome pub and have been completely satisfied every time I've been in. The food is delicious and when I commented on the fact to the owner, Dell, he gave me a card to get ten percent off every time I come in. It's so rare nowadays to find a kind and down to earth business owner who cares about his customers more than wringing every dime out of them. The atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable. They often have live music playing and the musicians are talented and often funny. If you're looking for a nice Irish pub style place to eat and drink in downtown Boise, look no further. It's got a great location near a parking garage and a movie theater so it's definitely a good place to go for a casual dinner and a movie with your favorite guy or gal.

For the last five years we have visited Boise quite often. (We have close family in Boise). My husband enjoys singing karaoke so we check out karaoke spots everywhere we visit across the country. For the last three years, Ha'Penny was one of our favorites and we took friends there to share the good times. But sadly, the last time we were there in March 2015, it had gone seriously downhill. A guy and gal seated at a table of about six behind us got up on about the fourth song and made a total mockery of any and all people who enjoy singing. They were raucous and insulting and caused people to get up and leave (even after buying drinks in anticipation of the good evening they thought they had in store ahead of them). When we paid our bill and left, even the staff admitted they too would leave if they could!!!! What has caused Ha' Penny to recently attract such a bad crowd? We have NEVER encountered anything so negative at any place we've ever been.

Having been into Ha'Penny on a few previous occasions in the past for a drink here or a quick bite there, I came in prepared to FEAST after coming into possession of a gift certificate (being short on funds currently..lol). I started with a hard cider/Guinness floater to drink and ordered the Guinness burger as my entree. My one critique at this point would be that I was asked how I would like my burger cooked..I have come to find that it will arrive well-done regardless, for whatever reason. I'm fine with this, though. The burger itself is fantastic! I am still trying to mentally concoct a duplicate of their signature Guinness sauce.. In either case, I had another beer as I ate and then, for dessert, I easily talked the staff into a Guinness float! :D The classic root beer float has NOTHING on it. Yum!

First half hour, got a beer for one member of a party of two. Next fifteen minutes, still can't get a water. After 45 minutes we threw down a five and like many others went to solid where they can actually serve food. I don't know why there is a front of house manager and then they don't get more wait staff. I've been here several times and it is always pretty awful.

The bartenders and servers are fabulous. The food is what you would expect for an Irish pub. My personal favorites are the turkey reuben and the pierogies. Both are quite flavorful and served hot. I've been told that, during the school year, there is live music. Alas, I've only been coming here regularly during the summer months.

    (5)
  • Dan M.

Very disappointed with the service. Hostess seated us and then we never saw a hostess, waiter or waitress again. I ordered from the bar and then decided not to eat because the hostess took our menu?? The live music was good but they stopped playing due to being kicked out by the owner. The good music was about the only thing good they had going for them. Bummer.....

This place has been around in Boise for many years, but I never frequented the place until lately. I've been impressed every time with the menu selection, quality and skillful preparation of the food. And with Boise being as big a beer town as it's become, it's really saying something to say they have a unique beer list -- UK-based beers no one else in town has on tap that I'm aware of, along with many of the local brewery "staples." The atmosphere is warm and perfect for the "pub" feel, though it's a little bigger than many pubs of the style. Almost always a soccer game on one of the screens in the room. And the patio is a great spot for our lovely Boise summer/fall sunsets. They also have a good stage for live music, which is rarely the case in a restaurant.

  • Angelic B.

Service was horrible and food was mediocre. The waiter was extremely rude and not at all helpful. The seats were very uncomfortable and when we asked to change seats, we were denied. The atmosphere seemed o.k., but with the rude waitstaff and so-so food, it's not worth my time or money to try again.

So we aren't bar people and really did not have high expectations. We were served by Marcus the whole time and had a BLAST!! Seriously wait service anymore isn't all that great (I don't blame them most people are rude) but Marcus was very fun, enthusiastic, attentive, and really relaxed! He made us feel like we had come there as regulars on our first visit. Just dinner on a Wednesday night but it was a really neat place! I love the lighting and the nice wood and stone style. The food wasn't exceptional but for the price was fine, and fast! I had a veggie burger and my man enjoyed his cheese burger! He said it was one of the better ones he has had in some time. The soup (tomato basil) was really yummy! We aren't bar people but we will be back for sure! It's worth it to mention my family suggested it to us, my 60 year old parents and 80 year old grandparents also really enjoyed themselves and highly recommended it!

Fun place, beer selection was good and the music was upbeat. The food is ok, I don't think I'd come here again to eat. We had appetizers but they were greasy and my friends had to ask for more chips. The bartender was ok, she wasn't busy but we had to ask for another round of drinks, and we were sitting at the bar. Probably just stick to drinks next time.

One experience, and one was enough. We were with a group of 6 making it 8 total. It took no less than 20 mins for the waitress to take our drink order and for the two hours we were there that was the only drink i got, i would happily have paid for many more crown and cokes but she never came back to ask me. The food was dissapointing, greasy, nothing unique about it. Just very unfortunate, the waitress was pretty unfriendly and not at all on her game to serve. On top of that when the bills came she got extremely put off that we would even consider asking for our bills to be split. Cool area of town for a restraunt and as an irish pub themed place you would think would have some fantastic food options but total dissapointment. Probably wont be going back.

Joy is awesome! Great experience...even in the middle of the day. Bean dip, Reuben, and Irish dip were all tasty. Concur they should be playing Irish music, but the Motown......Ray McCharles, Sam O'Cook were a great substitute.

Quite a disappointment. We came to Ha Penny to spend the evening of March 14th to enjoy good food and drink and listen to the band play their beautiful music. When the band was told to leave for some reason, we did too!! We went somewhere else for our dinner and the rest of our evening. Also, we were never served at our table and had to go to the bar to order our drinks three separate times. The hostess even took away our menus before we had a chance to order anything. ? Service was very poor. We only came for the band and when they left we had no reason to stay.

We came here not expecting much we were just hungry. However, I had their salmon and it had to have been one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had! The staff were super friendly and the place is pretty darn cool too. I could very well see ourselves going back.

A group of about 10 of us went here for dinner. We didn't have reservations, but were welcomed enthusiastically by our server, Brendan. Because we are all in Boise on business, our company requires us to have separate checks for reimbursement purposes. He was more than willing to do this, whereas some of the places we have been have not been so willing (we always tell the server before we order so there is no confusion at the end of dinner). The food was good and the ambience was nice. The only letdown was that they were supposed to be doing karaoke night, but had a live band instead. I would definitely go here again.

Came here on a week night for a beer and a little dinner. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we were seated promptly. I had read reviews that had mentioned their slow and lacking service, so I was surprised when a gentleman approached and took our drink order almost immediately. Annnnd, then, we didn't see him at our table again for 30 full minutes. Thirty minutes to get 2 beers seems inordinately long. It seems unacceptably long given they weren't very busy at the time. We did try to get our servers attention a couple of times but he was quite carefully avoiding any and all eye contact. He finally brought our beers, we ordered dinner, and waited another hour and ten minutes for that (an hour and ten minutes for mac & cheese? I mean, it's pub grub...I can't think of a single reason why their food would take this long to prepare). After we finished eating, we waited 20 full minutes for the check to arrive--when it didn't we finally tried to pay at the bar (to be told we had to pay our server-who was, thankfully, within the bartenders shouting range). Bah! What an abysmal experience. I would like to hope it was just an isolated incident, but honestly--nobody dining there seemed to be getting any better service than we were. If, for some reason, you had to go here--I'd suggest sitting at the bar? Hopefully, then, at least you wouldn't have to wait thirty minutes for a beer.

If you go in with low expectations and a desire to be surrounded by 50-60 year olds, then this is your joint. Can't really say much for the atmosphere or food - would give it two stars but the staff is friendly so I suppose I feel bad. Could really use a breath of fresh life and some energy in this place. Not likely to return.

We worked with Joy at Ha Penny to plan our company "End of the Year" party in December, 2014. There was no rental fee and no minimum purchase which was awesome. The space provided to us on a Saturday night was beautiful and generous. The food arrangement was lovely as well as delicious. Three staff members were dedicated to our party and as soon as we needed anything there was a helpful and fun member of the Ha Penny team ready to make it happen. We had so much fun!!!! Thanks to Ha Penny for making our night out exactly what we were looking for.

I like this place. Good vibe. Great soloist seeing the blues. Food was darn good as well. Server was really nice, but a bit off. My biggest pet peeve is empty glasses. I need water when I am chowing on some steak bites. She walked by our table 3 times while our poor empty water and beer glasses just sat there at the edge of the table. Better service and updated beer list would warrant more stars. We will be back though. More into this vibe than some pretentious bistro full of you know whos.
