I decided to write an update on Jax since they reopened after the fire last year. My wife and I stopped in on a Friday night, just after 7:00pm. It was busy but not crazy busy. We decided to sit at the bar. I could tell right away that they were understaffed. The bartender looked frazzled and was running around left and right getting drinks for all the waitresses serving the dining room area. When we were finally recognized we placed our drink and food order and I made off to the salad bar. This is one of the few places around that still has a salad bar which are all almost extinct. I'm glad I got it for free because it was worthless. It hadn't been restocked since the dinner rush hit so my salad consisted of lettuce, a couple of chunks of onion, and some ranch dressing. 80% of the canisters that were supposed to hold something were all empty. Not a good way to start the meal. So way later our food finally arrived. My wife ordered the breaded tenderloin sandwich and I ordered the chicken marsala. The chicken marsala itself was pretty good. I got two reasonable pieces of chicken breast which were breaded and pan fried and the marsala mushroom sauce was quite tasty. In a normal Italian place this is normally served with either pasta or mashed potatoes. At Jax, my choices were wild rice or a baked potato, neither really match the entree. I chose the rice and although it was decent, it just didn't really jive well with the chicken marsala. The tenderloin on the other hand was a disappointment. I've had their tenderloin before and normally they are good but I had a few bites of this one and was very underwhelmed. The tenderloin itself had no seasoning and no taste to it. The breading was blah. Sure, it was the size of a small Frisbee but it really lacked any good flavor. So we got done eating and since we were in a hurry because we had to be somewhere by 8:30 (we had now been there since a little after 7:00 and it wasn't because we were taking our time) I handed the bartender my card and told him just to close us out without waiting for the final bill. Unfortunately because he was all over the place he basically forgot us again and 10 minutes later if not for a passing manager that asked if we needed something we would have probably been ignored another 10 minutes. One last thing, I'm really not impressed with the after fire remodel either. Before the fire the bar area had a more roadhouse type feel to it. Now they knocked down some walls and opened it all up. The walls are painted a wine like maroon color with a bunch of those French wine posters on the wall. It really doesn't fit the place at all. All in all, very disappointed with my last visit. The service issues were probably a one time thing but the food left me unfulfilled. It's really too bad because Jax was a pretty good eatery in Marshalltown.

For Marshalltown, this restaurant is about as nice as you're going to get. The decor is nothing special, but the food was pretty solid American food. I spent $32 for two dinners. Dinners include the salad bar, which is small, but contains a nice selection of homemade salads. The lettuce was romaine, which is a nice departure from the usual iceberg. Dinners also include garlic toast (which also appeared to be homemade) and a starch selection (Mashed, fries, baked, potatoes o'brien, or wild rice). I meant to take a picture, but I was hungry enough that I forgot until it was too late. Our server promptly refilled beverages and efficiently cleared plates. My pork chops were seasoned nicely (but not overly so) and my dining companion enjoyed her sirloin. No complaints here--if you're in the area, give Jax a try.

Stopped here while in town on a Friday night. Always hesitate to order steak at restaurant because I hate being disappointed since I can grill a great steak at home but decided to get the house special 12 oz sirloin and wife got 8 oz. Prices were a little high but comes with salad bar and one side. Steaks came out perfect and they were very tender. Said they were handcut and they looked like it, over an inch thick instead of the paper thin steaks. For choice of side recommend the potatoes Obrien. $50 with two glasses of wine and one beer so not to bad.

I don't know why people give this place anything over 2 stars. It's a cook-your-own steakhouse with a mediocre iceburg lettuce salad bar. If you want a good steak there are better places in town. The service here depends entirely on who is working, and when it's busy it's so loud you can't hear the people next to you.

Since they reopened it is better. My steak was great the salad bar was ok.
