Sushi is the new comfort food. After a series of unfortunate events making for a crappy day, we decided to treat ourselves to sushi on a Friday night. The healthy alternative to the Friday Night Fish Fry of my childhood, sushi warms our tummies and makes us happy. This was our second visit and it was as good as our first. No wait for a table, but the place was full. Greeted promptly by our server Katty who was friendly, attentive, and patient with us as we gabbed and kept putting off ordering. Michael, the owner, came by and greeted us and made us feel welcome. Eventually we ordered the stuffed avocado which is a beautiful, round scoop of crab salad wrapped in thinly sliced avocado. Great way to begin your meal. We shared it three way. Next we ordered the Jalapeño Tuna, Salmon Lovers plate, a Crazy Tuna Roll, a Unagi (eel) roll, and a California roll. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, creatively presented, and tasty. It turned out to be too much food for the three of us and we found ourselves eating past the full line simply because the food was in front of our faces. . We tend to be regulars at Oyama, but my heart is feeling torn as Mandarin Spice has upped the ante with out-of-the-box offerings, great variety, an amazing decor, and excellent service. We will be back and are anxious to try more things.

The service was good and the place looked nice. They have many selections on sushi and also Asian food. We ordered New York Roll, Spicy Salmon and Crunchy Shrimpy Roll. New York Roll is very good and the other two are just maki rolls. We also had the fresh fish nuggets with mango sauce. Although delicious, it reminded me of the orange chicken. Hot tea is not free as most sushi houses would offer. It's $2.90/person, expensive to me. I would say it's a decent place to have sushi. Will come again.

Extremely impressed by this Chinese spot in a strip mall. If I could leave 3.8 stars I would because to the left of the drywall is a pier one. (Not a fan of nice restaurants in strip malls) They have outdoor seating that overlooks Collins road... Not the best idea to have this- but nice that there is that outdoor option. Food is the real star here: well thought out dishes that have a modern twist. Prices are right on point as well as the quantity and flavor. Sushi was pretty good, however Osaka is the king in my books. Service was ok- the severs could get more excited over the menu, and be able to suggest favorites that customers have enjoyed the most. My favorite sit down dinner spot for Chinese in the area!

I drug my boyfriend to this establishment this evening, knowing he was a picky eater- and we both left happy and full! The STARS of this restaurant, though, are the staff. With such a big menu of small plates, meals, and sushi, it's hard to get lost in the sea of options. Our server was kind, patient, and gave us GREAT tips on what to order! He helped us navigate through the drink and food menu and gave us fantastic advice- everything was phenomenal! At the end of the evening, the manager spoke to us to make sure we had a great time and you could tell how proud he was of his place. I can't wait to go back with my girlfriends and to continue exploring the fantastic fare!:)

Opening Day Blues I really wanted to like Mandarin Spice - I've been jonesing for a good chinese spot on this side of town for quite a while. We went on opening day, and I understand that breaking in new staff is tricky, but I suspect that there was no waiter assigned to our table at all... certainly not until we'd waited for a half an hour. My drink came out, ten or fifteen minutes later and it tasted like chemical solvent. When I noted this to a waiter, there was a general air of disbelief... I really wish I'd just sent the drink back instead of trying to drink the rest - I had a pounding headache all afternoon. The Orange Sesame Chicken was cloyingly sweet... I suspect that "authentic Chinese" wouldn't be, but I guess I may be wrong on that front. In either event, the sushi was passing good but certainly not remarkable. Maybe another waiter would have been different... maybe if the manager had been checking tables, she could have made sure that I didn't pay for my solvent-flavored Diet Pepsi... maybe if I come back in 6-8 weeks, the service will have improved and the kitchen staff will have shaken out a bit. I'm not saying don't go, but I'm saying don't go right now.

I really really wanted to like this place, went there for lunch with a friend. Now maybe Mongolian beef is not their niche (I've heard good things from multiple people) But their food for me was just mediocre, and crazy expensive for the quality of food you get. I'm sure I will visit again, and try something else, and if it is better I will update my review.

After promptly being seated and told our waiter would be right with us, it took another 10 minutes for him to appear. We started with the hot and sour soup which was both very hot and sour. Overall, not bad. Our main course consisted of a spicy salmon roll, a spicy tuna roll, a New York roll and Rainbow roll. Honestly, nothing set any of the 4 apart from the fare of any other sushi places in town - they all passed as "just ok". I can't say I recommend this place, but I can't say stay away either. I did note they have pad thai on the menu - I would love to give that a try and report back.

Phenomenal!!!! Seriously!!! I sat at the bar and for fantastic service. Steak and asparagus roll was so out of this world I ordered a second! If you knew me, I typically would have one and been full. From start to finish was over the top!

Just tried this place for the first time! Absolutely amazing. From the decor to the great service to the wonderful food, this place has it all. Best sushi I've had in a long time. The owner is the previous owner of Osaka. A great person who has brought the city of Cedar Rapids another phenomenal place to meet friends and family for a special meal. Try it today!!!

We had the opportunity to visit Mandarin Spice Grill this last Monday night. Here is the blueprint. The Mandarin Spice Grill is located in a strip mall, fundamentally nothing wrong with that, just to describe the location. It nicely decorated with Asian themed items. The bathrooms were very clean. I also visit the bathrooms in restaurants, because I figure if they cannot keep them clean what else is not being cleaned properly. Our experience: We were greeted upon entering the front door and asked if we would like to be seated. Seeing that it was not very busy we decided to sit at the bar. After looking over the menu we opted for a couple of appetizers and a couple of adult beverages. We like to order appetizers the first time when visiting a new restaurant (in for a penny rather for a pound if you do not find the food to your liking). The bartender was friendly and quickly took our drink order while we decided on the food. We order the Chicken Lettuce wraps and the chicken and beef skewers. The food arrived quickly and the presentation was nice. The lettuce wraps were seasoned nicely and came with plenty of lettuce shells to build the wraps. They had a good flavor. While the chicken and beef skewers looked good they fell a little short on taste and texture. The beef tasted like it was processed or run through a tenderizer. It had that chalky taste to it. The chicken was okay. Another patron was seated at a table by the bar and had ordered nigiri sushi and it looked great, so we decided to order a couple of pieces of sashimi. We overheard the waiter talking about how good the "White" tuna was. We order that and the fresh salmon. This became our mistake. Again, it was well presented, but the "white" tuna was not right, it was some other fish that did not have the texture nor did it taste fresh. "White" tuna is usually Escolar, but sometimes can mean Albacore. I can tell you it was neither. The fresh salmon was a little fishy tasting, like it was approaching the time that it should have been discarded. We asked our server if this was "White" tuna and without looking said yes. Never any attempt to ask if it was okay. There are some great places in Cedar Rapids that serve outstanding sushi so I know that it can be done just not here. Overall the prices were good, service was great, but need some work on the food. I know other people had raved about the food, but just did not happen for us. As for my comments on the sushi; I have had the opportunity to travel to Japan many times and lived on the east coast for several years and visited many sushi bars there. I ate my first piece of sushi in 1985.

Very few Asian places peak my interest the way Mandarin Spice has. My husband and I have been by twice now and both times I've awoken days later craving it again. I cannot wait to go back and eat. I think we may have found a new place to eat regularly! Both dishes I've eaten, the Orange Sesame Chicken and the Seafood and Yaki Soba, have been phenomenal. As an appetizer, I'd have to recommend the Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp. If you're looking for a drink, their Asian Mojito is out of this world good. Remember, it is Asian Fusion! If you're looking for authentic Chinese, you'll have to go elsewhere!

We always like to try out new restaurants so we stopped by for dinner on a Friday Night. First Impression was great. The owner/mgr offered us a tour after asking if we had been there yet. We knew the interior somewhat from when it was the Green Leaves buffet. But they've done a nice job updating and creating a special serving area for parties in the area where the buffet used to be. Would like to see that in action, but there weren't any people there that night. Service was quick and respectful. Ordered California Roll sushi to compare with other places, and it was equal to the best and priced nicely. Also ordered a shrimp tempura roll that was just as good. Had a Sapporo beer and it was serviced in iced pint, nice. Also had a main dish, the Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp, very fresh tasting, but a little bland, and could have used more sauce in my opinion. The vegies and shrimp were glazed with a sauce, but there was none in the dish. So that was just OK. We liked the restaurant pretty well, but it didn't wow us. Wow is a five star, and there aren't many I can think of. So we'll return to try some new things next time and give them a chance to wow us. But for now, a 4 rating is in order, and recommended.

The food was very good and very fresh. These aren't your average or run of the mill Asian food that you'll find at the numerous other Asian places in Cedar Rapids. Although we were impressed with the dishes we got (Black Pepper Chicken and Veggie Chicken) the service left a bit to be desired. Our waitress was abrasive. Despite that, it was a pleasant experience and we will return as the rest of the wait staff appeared to have more of a grasp on what they were doing.

The most expensive sashimi item on the menu, fatty tuna at $6 a piece, was frozen in the center. When our waiter picked up our plates I asked him to let the chef know about it. Needless to say, the item still appeared on our check. So if you're looking for fresh sushi or sashimi this is probably not your place.

I am impressed with Mandarin Spice. It is located next to Pier One and Brown's Shoes ( a plus). It looks like they are ready for outdoor seating and have heaters for that chilly night. Not a great view but glad to see they are trying this. The hostess greed us promptly and seated us in a comfortable booth. The decor is pleasant and the art unique and interesting. They have a large cocktail menu that is nicely bound (not like Zins where you sort through multiple sheets of size 8 font). The drinks are very reasonably priced and wine selection adequate. We had New York Sours @ $6.50. We had an appetizer- a crab ball with avocado and three different small types of sauces. The owner brought the appetizer and explained each sauce. I have also had Edamame and it was fine. I have posted our small plate Steak wrapped asparagus. Very good. I have had the tuna sushi rolls and they are very tasty. Portions are generous and the ingredients are fresh and cooked perfectly. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. I think they could use either another bartender or waitress. Seemed a little short staffed and alcohol is where you make your money! We will return and are grateful to have this variety in a menu nearby.

If you are looking for decent and authentic Asian cooking, this is not the place to go to. The food is substandard by any definition. It may look pretty but if you are knowledge enough, you will pass on what is offered. I did not try or see everything offered here but what I saw and tasted was overly sweet and very oily with cheap meats not quite as fresh as they should have been. Nor were the ingredients as advertised on the menu. My dish, advertised as grilled strip steak was all too obviously a marinated and tenderized bunch of cheap beef cuts. Some dished served to my companions were so poorly prepared, the diners passed on them. I did not try the sushi or sashimi and would be willing to give Mandarin Spice another try but I was not encouraged by what I and my companions ate. Worse, I am still dealing with intestinal distress days after this meal. The restaurant is large, well laid out and decorated with a number of isolated sections. Unfortunately the layout did not subdue the overly loud music that made conversation difficult. Service was OK if a bit slow. There are better restaurant choices in the area. Even a Chinese buffet is more appealing.

We have eaten here three times in the last few weeks (actually twice this weekend) and the food is definitely up a notch or two from typical Chinese. I have gotten a couple dishes that could have been lees sweet, but still very good. Hot and Sour soup was good. Our friend had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was excellent. We will go back so we can try other items on the menu.

We went there a week ago on Wednesday around 5PM. The server seems like nice but not knowledgeable as I asked her what is their special dishes. She made suggestion like we can get at regular Chinese Resto. We ordered Crispy Chicken wrapped Shrimp with Papaya Salad for appetizer. I asked her if the papaya salad like the Thai Salad and she said Yes. I can't tell that she doesn't know at all. The food came fast however We only got 3 pieces with a little condiment white color mayonaise with sesame oil. Then I asked the server brought the menu back and read it for us. Now she is realize that we didn't get the papaya salad. So she went to the kitchen and said they didn't get the papaya shipment and the kitchen never let her know that they got bad shipment on the papaya. They should let us know ahead of time that this food didn't come with papaya however seems like not a big deal for them and want to charge customer $6.95 only for 3 little pieces chicken wrapped shrimp. The server end it up took the food back to the kitchen and make a suggestion to replace our order with Cheese Wonton(Crab Rangoon) with no charge. This was not event hardly close enough. The manager came in but no apology just said that he will replace our appetizer free. This is terrible! Then our main dishes came in Organic Mapo Tofu and Kung Pao Chicken. The Mapo Tofu was blend and Kung Pau so sweet and taste like a bunch corn syrup without Kung Pao pepper and no spicy. This place truly not authentic Chinese and not a food like Hong Kong people made. It may look nice on the website and the comment from the owner in HOOPLA but there was not a good food and not AUTHENTIC CHINESE/HONG KONG. I went to Hongkong several times and travel all over the world there was not hardly close enough. If you ever travel to Hong Kong and know a true Chinese Food you will agree with me. I agree with Josh S reviewed. I don't recommend to eat there if you are looking for authentic Chinese. Better go to Szechuan House on Burlington Rd. Iowa City if you want to eat true Chinese especially something spicy or go to Chicago. We will not return to this place.

I can't think of anything that would have made our experience any better! Very friendly, personable and speedy service, and the food is SO good. Bacon wrapped shrimp and chicken/ steak skewers for him, and the New York and Alaskan rolls for me. No "kid" food, but there are simple dishes (like the chicken) that sufficed.
