Ordered a burrito and chips with queso. Got a Philly instead. I clearly ordered a burrito, the guy who took my order, the manager by the way, called out "burrito!" to the line cook...and I got a Philly instead. Okay, no big deal, I was in a hurry so no time to change it. And, since it is a "Philly" place I figured I might as well try it. Got to the cashier and they cluelessly stared at me about my chips. Ah, miscommunication. A little more time wasted. Finally ate my food, it was actually quite good. I assume the wrinkles I experienced will be ironed out, I hope, this is a new place with new employees. I'll give them another chance. Five stars, minus one for the Phantom burrito and minus one for being about $4 too much for one sandwich and chips with queso ($13 here, about $9 at Chipotle or Qdoba).

I used to live in the Philly area (only about 2 yrs back in the late '80s), so I've had a few cheesesteaks. Others have told me that one of the things that make a good cheesesteak sandwich is the bread. It's VERY hard to get bread like what they use in a "real" Philly, at least out here in flyover land. That said, Pepperjax bread is passable, certainly better than most I've had here. The meat and seasoning are also quite important, as is the cheese. I'd say the meat is a bit drier than I remember and the seasoning is a little stronger. They have an option to leave off or get a smaller amount of the seasoning, which is good. However, it's the cheese that seems most different. Real cheesesteaks had kind of gooey, crappy, even runny cheese. The semi-solid slices they use (which look kinda like Kraft singles), don't add enough moisture to the sandwich. You can always bring the sandwich home and pour some melted Velveeta on it, OR pay extra for them to pour their nacho cheese on the sandwich. They have other menu items, as well, but I haven't tried them. For example, there are Mexican food items that you can find a lot of places in the local area, so I'll probably never try them. Maybe somebody who has tried the Mexican items can jump in here now. They also have a chicken "Philly", which I got from the freezer case at HyVee and made at home once. It was just OK, not great. I definitely should have used less of their seasoning packet. You CAN call ahead and order food but it didn't work out for me when I tried it. I ordered 2 sandwiches and was told to give them 10-15 min to prepare them (seemed excessively long to me). I showed up around 15 min later and they hadn't even started on them. I might as well have not called ahead. If you just show up and order it takes less than 5 min once you get waited on. It wasn't a rush time, so I don't know what the deal was. There were only a couple of people in line when I got there. They have a few interesting wrinkles for the sandwiches. I don't like to actually bite into a jalapeño pepper, but I like the flavor. They have a kind of jalapeño "juice" they can squirt on the meat while cooking it. They call it a Fireball. Nice touch. You can also get a sandwich with extra meat. It makes it hard to eat without making a mess, but that's what makes a cheesesteak sandwich great. If you ask them, that can cut your sandwich in half, which my wife and I like. A whole one is too much for her to eat in one sitting, but I don't have her kind of willpower. You can also get a runny nacho-type cheese poured over the sandwich (extra charge). I always do this. Finally, Hy-Vee sells Pepperjax meat in the frozen food case. We've had it a few times. I made cheesesteaks with it once and they weren't as good as what you can get at the restaurant (probably my fault). I made beef stroganoff with the meat a couple of times too. It was "pretty good" but not great. Kept coming back on us, if you know what I mean. Might have been my recipe. Bottom line: best cheesesteak I've had in the area, but not as good as a real Philly from Philly.

The food is excellent! Tasty and hot! BUT the place is dirty. 7 tables needed to be cleared while we were there. The staff was nice, but needed to be more concerned with the appearance of the place.

Ate here to try it out. Heard it was pretty good. The phillies were pretty good but was not impressed with the service. I would definetly go back though cause the food was good. love the sauces.

We randomly stopped in here on the fourth of July since the place we wanted to go wasn't open. It's a fast food style restaurant where you order at the counter and seat yourself. First impression: the philly cheesesteaks were HUGE! They were long and large. A good first impression here. I ordered the normal steak philly cheesesteak and it comes with slices of cheese in it, which is different from the nacho cheese type of texture of cheese that I've normally had on my philly cheesesteaks in the past. This was okay though. They provide a bunch of sauces (mushroom sauce, ..can't remember the names of the rest) that are hot and pipin' and you can put them into your cheesesteak. We ordered a burrito too, fries, and chips and queso. The one thing that made me a bit dissatisfied here was the philly cheesesteak was too salty for me. I wanted to add the sauces (and I did), but the cheesesteak itself was already too salty. We found out that you can ask for it to me marinated with less seasoning, so if I do come again, I'll probably do that and maybe I could possibly give this place one more star next time. The fries were seasoned too (a few of them were over-seasoned) and the chips and queso was good. The burrito on the other hand was wrapped like a Chipotle burrito and looked just like it from the outside. However, it wasn't enjoyable at all for me. I LOVE chipotle and it tasted nothing like it AND it was more expensive than Chipotle. I'd say if you're here, stick to the Philly Cheesesteaks. We ended up not even finishing our Burrito (and we usually don't like to leave/waste our food!) I'm debating giving this a two or a three. Quite possible a three for the Philly Cheesesteaks, but after eating the Burrito, I'm going to bring it down to a two.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible service. Walked out, didn't eat. Never been before...I alerted the young gal working the grill to that fact and wee were asked if she could get a philly started. My companion ordered one and I wanted a chicken rice bowl. I had no clue that I had to order it at the grill. I wasn't asked anything else about my order. When I indicted I was having (intending to have) a chicken rice bowl; she said "okay but I'm gonna have to take care of the person behind you, because you forgot to order." Really?? Really?? Wow. Avoid. This place is a joke for service no clue about the food Will never return. Perhaps we can get Baja Fresh in there when this place fails.

The food was not bad. No real complaints other than the chips were stale that came with the queso. I think the food is what is preventing me from giving it one star. Of course I had no idea they only served Phillies and the rest of the menu is like Chipotle. The main problem, and the issue that brought me to this review, was that the general manager (or some type of manager as he was in slacks and a red shirt and I thought he name tag said GM) was sweeping the floor as we were eating. Not just sweeping in the distance, but under our table and around our feet to where we felt like we were in his way. It was unprofessional and unacceptable. Outside of that, our first experience at PepperJax was fair.
