Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

Foods to Avoid at Village Inn for Diabetics

Village Inn offers very few items edible for diabetics without any threat. You can avoid sandwiches and burgers at Village Inn and try the light breakfast items on the menu. You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Avoid Soup bowls and opt for cups instead at Village Inn.

Unlike most Village Inns, whose decor seems stuck in the mid 80s, this one was fresh - aquas and whites, with orange and brown accents. I liked the new booth arrangements - the main section was set up with half booth/half tables, but at an angle instead of the typical. We went for brunch on Saturday, and the place was hopping. There was a 15 minute wait to get our name in, but once that was done, it was pretty fast to be seated. Service, considering how busy it was, was ok. Not fabulous, but our drinks were rarely empty. The food was pretty good - standard VI fare, and delicious. I can see myself going back if I'm in the area at breakfast. (Sure beats the paltry offering at my hotel!)

As soon as I walked in, I thought "Bakers Square". Upon further research, I learned that Village Inn acquired Bakers Square in the last several years. We had breakfast, which was good. Nothing spectacular. Wish I had been in later in the day to have some lemon meringue pie. Mmmm....pie.

Let me start by saying my experience was not entirely bad. The food was decent and I will comment on that later. The service, however, deserves some attention even though the manager did everything in his power to make sure that I went away happy. He is the reason my review is 3 stars and not just 2. When I entered the restaurant, I was the only patron. There was one person leaving and the manager seated me right away, telling me that my server was X and she would be right with me. I waited 10 minutes before someone came by and asked if I wanted coffee. This appeared to be the hostess and not the server promised. I received the coffee promptly, but after another 5 minutes and still no server, the hostess came by and apologized for the delay. She took my order and then I heard her in the kitchen chewing out the server for disappearing. My food arrived promptly and even with a substitution the kitchen got it right. I ordered the chicken fried steak skillet with eggs over easy, substituting chicken for the beef. There isn't much to this dish. It's potatoes and onions with chicken fried steak and country (white) gravy. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes, unfortunately, tasted like they were cooked from frozen, like the home fries you can buy in the freezer section at the grocery store. The breaded chicken patty was also commercially prepared. However, the gravy tasted fresh and that really saved this dish from being a salty mess. The result was unexpectedly poutine-like and kinda delicious. That's where my positive experience ended. When my breakfast was served, I was asked if I wanted any jelly or hot sauce. I said yes to the hot sauce and cut into my eggs waiting for the hostess, who apparently was now my server, to return. You can guess what's coming. I waited. And waited. When the manager came out to check on the front of the house, I told him I was waiting for hot sauce. To his credit, he went right into the kitchen and got it and then apologized again. The server/hostess eventually came out and apologized as well. Other than the manager, the staff at this location was disappointing at best. I would have overlooked the initial delay (later attributed to the server being on break - to be fair, when she left the place was empty), had the rest of the service been otherwise excellent. I was seated next to the kitchen and could overhear the staff being more engaged in their own personal conversation than paying attention to their customers. I overheard the hostess (never learned her name, since she never introduced herself) admitting to the manager that she flaked out on the hot sauce. These weren't college students with short attention spans. These were mature women (I'd guess 40ish) who just weren't focused on their jobs. The manager was actively monitoring the front of house, and seemed to be the only one interested in making sure that the guests enjoyed their visit. My message to the server: Waiting on me is your JOB. It's what I pay you and tip for. You aren't cooking the food, so your focus should be entirely on me. I don't want apologies. I want good service.

The (new?) manager is the friendliest person I've ever met. He made sure that everyone in the restaurant was enjoying their meals & made an effort to engage with all of the diners. There was a genuine personal vested interest in every customer having the best experience possible. From making sure everyone's drinks were always refilled, to offering blueberry pie to an older lady on her birthday, it was one of the best displays of restaurant service I've experienced directly. My only regret is that I was so full from my meal that I didn't have room for pie!

I'm updating my review sitting at a booth in Villiage Inn. My son just had chocolate chip pancakes with literally 3 chocolate chips. My other son and me had their "endless" fish. Now I've had this before and it wasn't too bad but this time. Dry. Crusty and so little fish. If I want fried fish I'll go to Bluebird Cafe from now on. I literally got the same amount of fish from Villiage Inns "endless" fish that I got the last time I ordered fish from Bluebird. I also got 4x the breaking. Horrible. Just bad. I'll never get this item again. I've given VI 3 stars because the service as always is pretty stellar and they still have some items that are good that I enjoy. Especially the pie. VI has great pie. I hope this was just a one off but honestly I've noticed smaller portions and increased prices for a little while now. Both I can deal with but increased prices and worse quality I cannot. I will say when I pointed out the problem to the manager on shift she immediately went back to see what the issue was and took the fish meals off the ticket.

The sign on door said closing at 1am. But when I walked in at 12:30 we where told that "grill is turned off because we close soon." Really refused service to us.

Sunday morning breakfast was a disaster. Staff was unclear on which tables were their responsibility. Two or our three of our orders were cold - the whites in my Eggs Benedict had barely congealed and the yolks were cold and runny. My hash browns looked like they had barely touched a grill. A table next to us needed a server to come three times to re-take an order, after a third, there was a loud crash of breaking dishes - turns out it was there order, so they needed a fourth order. The four tables that surrounded us all had something wrong with their orders. There was no wait to get to the table, but 10 minutes to get a server and put in our drink order. Ten more minutes to get our beverages, which weren't quite right.

When I first saw the name, I didn't think the place would be inspirational. Upon entering, I was wrong. The atmosphere is totally chic, foods have quality, and prices are reasonable. All the family members' plates were wiped clean. I would definitely return next time I'm in the area.

Stopped in for a late breakfast on our way through town. My family had never been to a Village Inn before and I suggested it knowing breakfast would be good, boy was I mistaken! After waiting 10 minutes in total after being seated, no one had yet greeted us. I went to the host and told him we still did not have drinks. He mentioned to our server, but he (the host wound up coming back and asking for our drink order). Sever eventually meandered over and took our order. While we waited 30 minutes for our food, we noticed that every table around us, even two that were seated after us had received their food. I reached my acceptance limit and walked over and told the host we were leaving because every table around us, including those seated after us had their food. His response: "Oh, Okay". Never again will I walk in the door of a Village Inn when they have competitors that can provide a far better experience.

Ever since this place was redone awhile back it has been much more enjoyable to come to. The food is great and the pies are awesome. You have to get the birthday cake pie. Sometimes the servers on a weekend don't like to clear their own tables so the hostess people have to do it and they don't always have time. So you'll have a backed up front room with a ton of empty (DIRTY) tables.

Awesome pies!!! One thing that annoyed me when I was trying to pick up a pie once. They took forever to help me! I was standing there for 15 minutes before they even saw that I needed help. I tried to catch their attention but they were only concentrated on their customers. Hopefully that one time was just a fluke.

One of the best restaurants in Coralville. I have ordered many different things on the menu and have never ordered anything I didn't like. And yes, I am picky! Plus their pies are amazing! And the service is terrific. I wish they had Village Inns in New York where I live now!
