I have no qualms with Steak N Shake. Love their prices (a variety of tasty burgers and fries for $3.99?! Believe it), shakes are super yummy (side-by-side banana and chocolate please!), staff has always been super nice and attentive. A great place if you're dining with kids and in general a way better option over any fast food place IMHO! While the place is clean, the only thing I don't really care for is the atmosphere...they've got plenty of booths (definite plus) but it has the feeling of a truck-stop diner, not diggin' that. But it doesn't stop me from coming here! There are always coupons in the mail, too.

The place was extremely busy when we went in, but our waitress was pretty attentive. There was trash all over the floors, and you could tell a lot of the staff were really frazzled, but our server seemed fine. The food was alright, nothing amazing, but overall a pretty alright experience.

Very poor service. Dining room was dirty, tables weren't bused, service was extremely slow & lacking attentiveness. Food was OK when we got it.

Had lunch here on Saturday. The place was busy but our party of 5 didn't have to wait much more than 5 minutes to get seated. Our waiter was Martel and he provided excellent service. He was extremely attentive and checked on us often. The food arrived hot and in quick fashion. They had a "kids eat free" thing going all weekend which was a huge savings for us. From as far as I can tell, it appears this special is on every weekend. This was a very enjoyable meal and hats off to Martel for really providing that top-notch service that is lacking at so many places.

When we first got there they were busy on a Saturday, understandable. The hostess wasn't taking names of people that have been waiting in line to check in but in stead checking people who came in after everyone that was already in the restaurant. Several people left because they never got checked in. We should of just turned around and left then but no we decided to stay and eat. We sat down and after just a couple min. The waitress took our order. We got drinks and food just fine. While we were eating a manager was yelling a pregnant waitress because she had her hands full and could not take something from him. We got the check but we wanted to add a milk shake. We waited ten min then I decided to hunt the waitress down and tell her I wanted to add a milk shake. She promptly added the shake and I told her it was to go. We waited another 20 min for a shake then a manager asked what we were waiting for and we said a milk shake so we can go, we had my 2 year old and 3 month old with. Apparently the waitress forgot about it and when we got it, it was completely melted and the cool whip was liquid. NEVER AGAIN, WILL I EAT AT THIS STEAK AND SHAKE. TERRIBLE SERVICE AND RUDE CARELESS EMPLOYEES!!

Was here at midnight. Took about 20 minutes to get anything done. The staff is clearly retarded.

Pathetic serving time for both drive through as well as inside seated serving. Takes FOREVER to get the food. Have been here regularly, and none of the time do I get the food quickly. The food is fine though. So if you have a lot of time in ur hand, then is this joint good for you.

You can never go wrong with ordering a burger and a shake here! It was super busy when I visited this place, waiter/waitress going from table to table. It took about 15 min to get seated, but I'm not complaining, once seated we were greeted nicely. Good food, fast service, can't go wrong here!

This was a very impressive visit! At first I was slightly deterred due to the parking lot being filled and the long line of cars at the drive thru but I'm glad I made the choice to stop in anyways. Despite the large crowd of people waiting my party of two was greeted right away and our name was put on a list. After a brief 3 minute wait our name was called and we were seated. After another 3 min out waitress arrived and had our order taken. And you guessed it! Another 3 min later we had our food! The Jamaican jerk burger and bacon lovers burger were really good. The Jamaican jerk sauce has just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering and the bacon lovers burger was just that! Plenty of bacon! And can I just add the french fries here Are on a whole other level of good compared to other fast food restaurants and you can choose from a variety of seasonings to add to your fries. The price is amazing at only $4 and the ambiance is that of an old diner. So don't let the crowds keep you away, they move you thru quickly! Good food, good service, and great price!

Service was prompt and staff all welcoming with big smiles and seated right away. Was a Sunday morning and our server was very nice! Food was nice and hot and tasted great. Server came back several times and made sire things were good. Would recommend this place for breakfast any time.

My family and I tried to eat at this location this evening and our experience started poorly and only got worse until we left. We arrived around 8:00pm, the dining room had only a handful of tables and what seemed like ample staff for the holiday crowd. We were seated promptly and browsed the menu. After 15 minutes of tables around us being seated and greeted we began to wonder if we'd been forgotten. 5 minutes later we were able to flag down a server and ask if we had a server. She hurried off to find out and said someone would be right with us. Our server comes to greet us and explains that its her second night serving alone and apologizes for the wait. Fine, I can understand that. She takes our order and leaves to grab our drinks. She comes back with 1 of the two iced teas we ordered and explains she needs to make more tea. That's poor sidework awareness in an only moderately busy restaurant but fine, I can understand that. Another 10 minutes goes by and she brings one of the two shakes we ordered and the other iced tea, says the other shake should be ready in a moment. 10 minutes later she arrives with the second shake. At this point I'm starving. We've been at a short order restaurant for roughly 45 minutes already. She says she thinks our food is in some process of cooking, and that she'll check on it. We ask that we get our check with our food as we have plans at 9:30 and its already 8:50. 5 minutes later she returns to say she forgot to key in our order. She again explains its her second night, that she got slammed and didn't ring it in like she thought she had, that if we'd just like to go our shakes are on the house or she can place our order now but isn't sure how quickly it can be made. We at this point are so short on time that we have to go and grab Culvers on the way. Which we obviously should have done from the start and avoided this place. They apparently don't take the time to train their servers appropriately or vett out the ones who probably should consider another profession.

Took forever to seat. Food was cold and my experience was unsatisfactory. This was by far the worse experience ever

I've eaten here probably 20-30 times in the past few years. I think you get a decent deal for the price. You can get a burger, fries, and a shake for around $10. I didn't care for what I ordered maybe a couple of times, but aside from that, it's always tasted pretty good. The wait time is somewhere between a fast food joint and typical sit-down restaurant. The quality of service is usually hit or miss. If you go during a conventional meal time (12 pm or 5 pm), it's usually good. They're severely short-staffed after midnight, so if you're looking to get food late at night, go someplace else.

The definition of an average burger joint. The burger patties are so thin and weirdly formed sometimes I forget I am eating a burger. However, Steak and Shake does allow for great customization with meals. Decent amount of sides. And not to mention it is very affordable especially when they have coupons in circulation. They have extensive shake options that taste above average. Price is perfect for low budget families and students. As for the service, it has always been slow when I have gone in the evenings. They only had a few people on the floor. Even though theyre sometimes forgetful they are still friendly. Gotta keep in mind that they sometimes work very long hours because theyre open so late. Still tip servers well!

This is where I was first introduced to Steak n Shake, and this remains my favorite location, even though it is more than 3 hours from anywhere I have ever lived--it was always our lunch stop whenever driving to or from Madison and Kansas City. I'm almost always very happy with the food here--the fries are crispy, chicken tenders and sandwiches taste great, shakes are rich and delicious (if it's in season go for the salted caramel pretzel!), and burgers are tasty, although on my last visit I felt that there was just too much lettuce that diluted the flavor of the meat and cheese. Other than that one time, though, I've been happy with my burgers here. At other locations I've had burgers that were regularly too greasy (for the melts) and just not flavorful. Service is fast and friendly. Bathrooms are decent--we preferred using the bathrooms here over the gas station bathrooms while we were on car trips. One thing that bothered me was inconsistency with what we got when we ordered kids meals--we always ordered our food to go, and sometimes we'd get the crayons or cardboard car and a kids cup with the drink and sometimes we wouldn't. However, that is just a minor problem. Even though there are a handful of Steak n Shakes within driving distance where I live now, we always look forward to stopping at this Coralville location. Good food, good service, good Steak n Shake!

Probably the highest quality, best service you're going to find at a quick-service restaurant. My Jamaican Jerk burger with fries here was $4, and was served by a waiter! This seemed like a very popular spot as it was crowded. The high traffic was probably responsible for some of the uncleared tables and some items on the floor. I've always been consistently pleased at this location and this chain in general. They'll also give you a re-fill and to-go cup for your bevereage when you check out.

This is one of my mothers favorite places, I introduced her to Steak 'n Shake back in 2002 after I discovered it during one of my summer baseball league games. Been to many different Steak 'n Shakes ever since. They have good burgers, fries, shakes, sides, and desert. They are very affordable, you can eat a lot for under $15. All the food I have tried was very good. My favorite meal is Double cheeseburger, fries, cup of chili, and split milkshake with banana and chocolate. Yummy and always walked away satisfied. They are open 24 hours so you can try them anytime you want. They also have a breakfast menu too. If you still aren't sold, you can get a cool throwback paper hat from them if your into that kinda thing.

Incredibly average visit. Got in and was seated pretty quickly. Waitress did wait a while before she took our drink order. After that, the food came out really quickly and was delicious as always. I ordered the garlic double steak burger and it was really good. Don't think you can go wrong ordering anything off of their menu.

Fastest/friendliest service I've ever received at a Steak & Shake drive-thru. And I was there during the lunch rush. Whatever they're doing there they need to figure out how to replicate it at other Steak & Shake locations. I'll definitely be back!

For a place that has "shake" in their name, the shakes were not the best. The chocolate chip cookie dough shake was very basic. The cookie dough was very unpleasant to consume. It was dry and crunchy. It could have been stale but I am not sure. When I received my shakes, the cups were covered with milk all over the sides. The food however is exactly what you pay for. Also: restrooms were not clean at all. The women's smelled of urine and the men's had no paper towels, and the stalls had wet towels on the floor.

I LOVE their burgers. What I absolutely hate is that the builders of the restaurant--in their infinite wisdom--decided to place the drive-thru speaker directly facing the noisy, heavy traffic of Interstate 80 instead of around either side of the building. To make matters worse, this "Steak and Shake" has such an incredibly horrible sound system that you literally have to yell at the top of your lungs just to get them to hear your order (and it IS a problem with their sound system, since the Wendy's next door has the same issue with the location of their drive-thru speaker but NEVER asks me to speak up or repeat an order). Adding to the fun of the drive-thru zaniness, many (but not all) of the cashiers taking your order at this Steak and Shake are not very well versed in the very basics of customer service. Instead of hearing "I'm sorry, can you please repeat that?" or "I'm sorry--we're having trouble hearing you--can you please pull up and we'll take your order at the window?", you're much more likely to hear a bewildered, snarky "WHAAAT?" that seems designed to make you feel foolish, even though you know full well that they've got to be having the same sound issues with a majority of customers who come through there. Even with all that, I'm still a fan of their burgers, and they still have the best breakfasts in the fast food business. Leading your day off with their Breakfast Shooters AND the option of ordering from their full lunch/dinner menu pretty much guarantees a great start to your morning.

The place was very busy Sunday afternoon. Got seated in good time. Took about 15 minutes before they took our order. Food was fast, and tasted okay. Fry's not real fresh. had to remind them about the 2 shake ordered for our girls. Not any salt on our table, and very little ketchup. Have had better here and the Davenport store.

I went here for a pick me up after work. Not only did I have to repeat my order multiple times, but they forgot our 2 milkshakes. We told them they were missing and the manager personally came to our car to bitch us out about how next time WE need to make sure HER high employees ring up our shakes. We had no idea we weren't charged for them, and that's not my job to make sure her employees do their job. I work in the restaurant industry, and my managers would NEVER treat a guest like that!

Slow service. High fructose corn syrup in applesauce. Chicken sandwich is different than it used to be and different bad. It tastes like it is supercharged with sodium and sulfites. Yuck. I might be tasting it for three more hours.

This was poor experience even for fast food. Service staff couldn't be bothered to actually wait on us and the price to value of the food was well below my already low expectations. Do yourself a favor and walk the row to McDonald's

Food was good. Service was horrible. 20 minutes after we ordered our food arrived. We had already asked once when our shakes would come. Still no shakes. The gal said that she would go make them. About 5 minutes later we see her cleaning tables. Still no shakes. We received them about 10 minutes after we got the food.

Not much to say. It's like a revival of a old diner concept. Hamburgers are slightly small, but the flavor is good. Fast service and a good alternative to the big boys (McD's and BK).

i come here sometimes to fill the void of In N Out or Johnny Rockets. it's doesn't quite have the same umpf, and it doesn't have secret menus, but the food is always affordable for what you get. why anyone would go to a McD or Hardees for the same price (or more) baffles me. service is always friendly.

Prices are great and the burgers are far better than mcdonalds, hardees, etc. Pretty nice dining room too.
