First time I've ever been here. Overall my experience was a 4/5, but the food was a 5/5. My wife and I both had the combination steak and ribs. Steak was cooked medium rare and ribs were falling off the bone...absolutely fantastic. Kids had chicken tenders with fries, both of which were great as well. Our server was Joseph, he was great! Service was friendly and they were very busy with it being Mother's Day. Only negative from my experience was the restroom could have used some more detailed attention (toilet paper on floor and mirror could have been wiped down); however, there was an associate in the restroom cleaning when I walked in. I also ran out of toilet paper in the stall I was in...this should "never" happen. Overall 4/5, I will definitely be back here again!

Have eaten here many times. Salads are awesome, entrée items equally tasty and priced fairly for the Iowa City market. Sometimes you wait a little and at times service is a bit slow however this depends greatly on the day of he week and time of said day. All in all I love this place and will continue to return.

Our food was cold. The waitress was rude and pushy (as in trying to get us out of there) and it wasn't even busy. As soon as we got our order, she came back in 2 minutes seeing if we were wanting/ready for dessert! Then two minutes after that, she came by with the bill and told us to have a nice day. Very rude and wanting us out of there. It wasn't a nice "have a good day" it was a "how dare you come in and I don't want to be here" attitude. Chicken was cold, soup had no flavor, raw potato skins, etc. We used to have a Cheddar's in the Quad Cities and I was so excited to see one kind of close by. Never will we eat here again.

They brought our ticket out (2 entrees + 3 sides) within five minutes so it was clear everything was just microwaved and dumped on a plate. Pros: chicken fingers and pot pie tasted ok, pot pie crust was good; salad was crunchy and refreshing in all the right ways, mini croissants were above par for American croissants Cons: chicken fingers and shrimp were cold, shrimp came with some gross sauce that tasted like everything in my grandmas candy bowl melted down and mixed with shitty bourbon, broccoli casserole was the Holy Grail of broccoli casseroles in that I had to quest for my vegetables like Lancelot for the Holy Grail, southern style green beans were slimy and limp Overall, I would sum up my experience as: I did not get food poisoning. $20/two people so that's something, but for that price I recommend just getting fast food that isn't fronting as a sit down place

Stopped on our way through Iowa! Excellent food which all tastes and looks homemade and fresh!! The prices were very reasonable for all the delicious food we got!! Wonderful service and very relaxing decor! Wish we had one closer to where we live!

I read previous reviews and figured I would try it for myself, and as far as I'm concerned, trust the reviews. The only thing 'casual' about this restaurant is the service and management, they are nothing to write home about unless you are upset with it. We were seated quickly but then promptly waited 20 minutes before any server came to our table to take a drink order, and when he did come he stated it wasn't even his table but he just saw us sitting there for so long (not sure if it's true or just a cover up, but either way it's a horribly long wait). We ordered an appetizer of onion rings which took an additional 20-30 minutes to come out, in fact they came out WITH our food. Food was alright, or maybe we were just so hungry by the time it finally came out that it just tasted ok at that point. Either way great food doesn't un-ruin the experience caused by the poor service. There were 2 managers walking around with no way of telling who they were (no nametags) besides asking someone. They just hovered around the bar area chatting and laughing with employees and friends the whole time, never went around to tables to inquire about their experience. Poor Management breeds poor service.

They must have had a rocky start. We had lunch there today and three of us all got pretty good food. I had the half-rack of ribs, which were great. The cole slaw was OK but my mother-in-law loved it. Prices were lower than expected compared to some of the other corporate restaurants in the area. It does have an odd presentation, with the front door facing the interstate, so driving up you have to look at the back end of the building. Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised.

Garbage. It took 30 minutes to get water. They werent even going through a dinner rush. 15 minutes to get a side of ranch. A complete hour to get our food. When I got my chicken sandwhich the chicken was not cooked all the way through and my wifes chicken was over cooked and was dry. Our daughter was hungry and it was difficult to get food for her without her starving through it. The prices drew us in to try the place and I would rather pay more for anywhere else that cares about good service and good food. It is now an hr and a half and we havent recieved the bill yet. Couldnt be more disappointed. This is no way to run a restaurant.

Friendly waitstaff and the wait wasn't too bad (25 minutes at 5 pm on a Friday), but the food was mediocre (good steaks, but cold potatoes and they got an order wrong). There were apple chunks in the baked potato: is this an intentional part of the recipe?

horrible management. bad service. worst experience ever. I will never go there again I have never had such bad service at any restaurant the management has no idea what they're doing. The food was cold. the people were mean. I did not have a good time

Why do I come here? I thought this long after being opened they would have gotten their act together but no. 1st. Lunch took nearly an hour to get to us. Okay, maybe they are busy. Nope. The person in front of us who came in nearly 10 minutes later got served before us. 2nd. My baked potato was hard and Luke warm. 3rd. My son ordered a cheeseburger, no onion or tomato. He got a bacon cheeseburger with everything. I've never been to a place that has been given so many chances and hasn't improved an inch.

Worse service ever! They messed up a salad and another order. Onion rings tasted burnt.

Wow! What terrible service! Terrible food to boot! What do you expect for another cheap Americana big box yuppie joint I guess. My family dragged me to this place, and honestly I was a little curious after I've heard people raving about it like it was some damn gourmet restaurant. How classy or gourmet could a place called cheddar's be? They sure went to great lengths to see that the building was done well. The wood work is very nice, and the African cichlid tank is very well done. The drinks are strong and that's where the good ends. It took us 1 hour to get our salads! 1hr 40mins to get our food. Under cooked fish, basically raw, over cooked steak, well done when asked for medium rare, wrong sides, missing sides, forgot about drinks, and all after such a long wait. The manager comped most of our meal for 6 which was left mostly uneaten, and then had the tenacity to leave some 12$ and change on there! Wtf? At that point why not comp the whole damn thing? I definitely won't be going back. Even if they could guarantee good service, their menu is pretty bland/basic. I guess if you like Applebee's/Chili's sort of food. .... knock your self out, roll the dice, good luck.

Cheddar's is a place I've frequented before when I was in Texas. I always thought that it was decent and not a terrible place to grab a less-than-complicated bite to eat. For this particular location: The portion sizes are pretty immense, much akin to Texan portions. The food is still pretty much just averagely decent. However, the staffing/service is terrible. The first two visits were pretty average in terms of service and I was pretty indifferent. However, the last time was an incredibly poor experience. I arrived around 7:30 PM, which on that day, was after a dinner rush. Whew. We were sat in the bar area and our server was nowhere to be found. We sat there for about 10 minutes, trying to catch the attention of 3-4 different servers that walked past us, meeting eye contact, but to no avail. They all ignored us. Finally, we got one to stop and he brought us some water. He was pretty polite and cordial and said he'd find our server. Another 10 minutes later, our server, who happened to be one of the ones that passed us many times hurriedly grabbed our order without apologizing for his delay. When we got our food, my bacon cheeseburger was missing bacon, which I let him know. He quickly went to the back and got two slices of bacon for me. The order should've had four... Really what is bothersome of this place is how everyone ignored us. One server whose attention I caught, stared at me in the eye and proceeded to walk into the back while staring at me. At least three of the servers bullshitted loudly near the bar with the bartender and a person who looked like the manager. Yikes. This place is pretty lucky it has the name Cheddar's to it and that it's one of the few "new" places to eat.

I visited Ceddar's tonight around 6:30pm. I was in town for business and have been to other Cheddar's before (which I loved) so I figured it was a safe bet. I sat at the bar as I was alone and there was a wait for tables. The Good: Drinks - I ordered a Maker's Mark and Coke. It was decently strong and priced; $5.75ish. Food - I had bourbon glazed salmon, rice, broccoli, and a cup of chicken tortilla soup. I will get into the accuracy of my order later on, but once my food arrived it wasn't bad. The taste of the food is the only reason I gave one star, not to mention I can't give zero stars. The Bad: Service, Service, Service: I ordered miso glazed salmon which comes with rice and broccoli. I also ordered a cup of chicken tortilla soup. The bartender asked if I wanted the soup first and I said yes. 30 minutes later I receive a plate with salmon on a bed of rice; that's it. The bartender said my soup would be out shortly. I asked her where the broccoli was and to just cancel the soup. She said she misheard me and though I ordered bourbon salmon. Miso, bourbon...sounds the same to me as well. If I had ordered the bourbon salmon it comes with rice and two sides, so there is still no explanation for the lack of side items. My soup arrived anyways a few minutes later. A few minutes after that I received a side of broccoli. So I was still short a side from the "mistaken" order, but I wasn't charged for the soup so I let it slide. There was a couple at the bar waiting for a to go order. They waited 45+ minutes while the employees repeatedly asked each other where and what the order was. All of this discussion was in front of said couple who could clearly hear them. The bartender asked any employee who would listed where bloody mary's were in the system. I'm not sure if it was to determine the ingredients or to charge for it. Either way, it's a common drink so I was shocked. An employee who appeared to be a chef (given the black chef jacket covered in...flour?) came behind the bar and began making drinks. He was making a margarita and kept asking the bartender what next, what next until the drink was presumably finished. I'm glad that was not my order. The manager made a brief appearance behind the bar and he appeared as clueless as the rest of the employees while trying to figure out the computer system and what customers were supposed to be receiving change. The bartender stated no less than five times that she was out of quarters. I was there an hour and no quarters arrived. Thankfully I live out of town so I won't be tempted to eat here again. But the service here sorely tarnished the Cheddar's name in my mind from previous locations I have visited.

The onion rings were fantastic. They seemed to be less greasy and more flavorful than most others we've tasted. The serving size and presentations were noteworthy. Our entrees were flavorful. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We will return.

We will be the customer that doesn't come back. Food was unexceptional. I ordered lunch portion which came on large plate with the food covering a third of the plate and 2/3 of the plate empty. Got salmon , not to seasoned and not given a lemon. Placed on a small bed of rice. We had a very friendly and professional waiter.

We stopped in here passing through and wanted to try something other than Texas Roadhouse so we went to Cheddar's and the prices were really affordable and the food was AMAZING! It didn't take too long to get our food either and the service was great! We'll definitely be stopping here on our way back out!

The night that my family and I went they were having credit card problems which happens I get it. Looked at my bank statement and there were two charges. Okay that happens so I call and told to wait a couple days. Well couple days later still being charged twice. Call again. They don't have anything on their end so I need to go to the bank and send them a statement proving this. So take time out of my day get statement and fax. Still nothing after that. Three weeks later finally got money back. Just way to long for a refund that they did.

Doug S First time I have ever ate with out leaving tip. In over 40 years of traveling for work I experienced the worst waiter ever. Food served with out silverware. Had to get up and ask the hostess. He came to my table 3 times. 1st to take the order. 2nd to leave the food and 3rd to leave the bill. This was at 4:00 in the afternoon. Not busy, he preferred to socialize with other employees rather than work. Have eaten here over a dozen times. Conclusion, if you are seated in the bar, service is usually bad. Food was good, service terrible. Waiter argumentative. Won't be back.

They should not even get one star wait and waited for the food order chicken fried steak and it was raw never again

  • Emily R.

First impressions are everything. My first time here I walk through the door to see 5 servers huddling the hosts stand and not a single one looked up or welcomed us. We stood there for at least 15 seconds before anyone even acknowledged us. Mediocre service continued. I got the Dijon chicken with mushrooms and a side of overdone, bland macncheese. Won't be returning.

This place made Applebee's look good. Ceasar salad and soda was good. The food and service were terrible in every way possible. At least it sucked at a good price

Onion rings are to die for and their margaritas and bloody mary's are awesome as well! Really modern and clean inside and the staff is always nice too.

  • Amanda M.

The salads are huge! I ordered the Asian Salad- not the best one I've ever had but it was still good! The onion ring tower is a must! The atmosphere is very cozy. My grandpa is a picky customer and complained about his coffee and the manager came right over and explained how their brewing process is different and every cup is essentially brewed fresh. She was very accommodating. I have been here twice and will definitely be back!

Have enjoyed dinner and lunch at this location. Both meals and service were satisfactory which will result in continued visits for future trips to Coralville. Location is conveniently off of expressway and away from congestion of the mall.

Piss poor service. Waited for 20 minutes to be seated and then waited 20 for drinks then got the wrong drinks. Left so pissed off.

Incredible family restaurant. Really great homemade food for an exceptional price. You can take your family out to eat and not break the bank. The portion sizes are large enough to take home a portion for lunch the following day. This is now our family favorite restaurant in the Corridor area. The Monte Cristo sandwich is fantastic. One of the best I have ever had. Don't forget the 'Cheddars' sauce for the French fries. The ribs fall off the bone and are better than the steak houses in the area. The homemade croissants are delightful!! Great atmosphere too. Definitely a keeper

What good is there to say about this place beside the portions. Service is horrible. This is the 3rd time and wont be going back. last time we ate there wife ordered the dijon chicken and the whole plate was soaked in the mustard and thats all you can taste. Onion rings were over greasy. I had the side of the southern green beans and they were just regular green beans. Waitress spilled our dink on our table and we had to ask another team member to clean it up cause she just walked away. Dont waste your time with this place.

Very solid place to eat. Place was packed and the service was still quick and professional. All smiles and looked happy to be there. Food was very good. Wife loved the onion rings and shes not a huge fan of rings. Baked spagzagna was awesome Infused teas were awesome. Mango and peach were both spot on.

Nice restaurant, the key west chicken and shrimp was amazing! Would definitely come back and eat here when I'm in town just for this dish alone. Server was awesome too, very knowledgable about the menu and friendly. The bartender must be new though, they really jacked up our margaritas, tasted like straight up tequila and there was so much salt in it that it tasted like I was drinking ocean water with loads of tequila in it. Server lady got me a new drink and it was the same thing as my sisters, Texas tea or something like that and my sisters drink tasted way better than mine. Consistency on drinks might not be great here. All in all, would come for the food but not the drinks.

As a student at Iowa I had been waiting to go to this restaurant since I saw it was opening. Last week I finally got the opportunity to go. It was a very interesting experience. It was about a 5 minute wait and then we were seated. In this time I had a chance to check out the bathroom which was very modern but only had one urinal. Really? Our seating was also very awkward being so close to the bar because we had people standing at the bar right next to our table. It took about 12-15 minutes before a waiter came over to our table which almost prompted me to leave. Once waited on things seemed to go a lot smoother. Our food arrived in about 20 minutes which was getting close to the timely side but nonetheless it was a busy Friday night. Despite some minor setbacks everyone in my group agreed the food was quite good especially given the price.

First things first, the building is absolutely beautiful and probably one of the nicest restaurants around. The food is very attractively priced and for the few times we have ate there pretty good quality. The one thing that stands out that they are struggling with is the service. Im not sure if I just expect Better service because we are in such a nice restaurant or what. Sometimes I might just need to remember that it is still a "chain" restaurant but I have been to other "chain" restaurants that have had outstanding service.

cheap food and good food what could go wrong ???? I like howe I can order a burger for $5 and get fries for a extra cost. My husband and I always share the fries (health reasons mostly) bc they give way to much fries any ways :) The onion rings are amazing.

A one star says it all with this place. They have good food but horiable service. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. The management is bad and just walks around and acts like there doing something. ..

Food has been hit and miss but mostly hits. The service has been mostly misses though. The servers all seem really lost or not well trained. One time our server spent more time hanging out with her friends than keeping tabs on her tables. The prices are really great thought so some times it's worth dealing with some lazy servers. Decent and cheap place for a quick dinner.

Ordered the Steak & Chicken Strips Combo with broccoli and mac&cheese. Tasted unbelievable! Service was around 3 stars and the lighting could use some improvement, but I'm giving them 5 stars for the chef!

My wife and I visited for the first time on a busy Friday night. We had to wait for about 20 minutes but after we got seated our waitress was very friendly. We got our food very quickly. I was impressed how affordable it was. My burger was only $5.99! We had to wait for about 10 minutes for our dessert but it was delicious. I will definitely be going back here again!

Just terrible. The server "didn't know she was supposed to serve us"..she acknowledged us after about 15 minutes to finally grab our drinks. Brought our appetizer of nachos out, cold. They only brought out 2 of the 3 meals we ordered, didn't receive any of the salads we ordered. Apparently the kitchen "dropped the bomb" on the chicken pot pie. The one star is for the ribs and the fact that they paid for the below average meal.

It's hard to find a good restaurant these days. Usually you get so-so service, increasing prices, and small portions. Not so at Cheddar's. The food, the portions, the prices, and the service...all excellent. FOOD: The menu has something for everyone. It was all very well done. Salads were fresh and well-balanced. Chicken was cooked to perfection, not overly fried. Barbecue sauce was good. French fries were satisfying. Cheese dip for the nachos was surprisingly good. The onion rings get their own paragraph here, because they were quite possibly the best onion rings I've ever had. And I'm a stickler for onion rings. They're battered -- not breaded -- with some added flavor in the batter. Wonderful. And a rather enormous serving size, which is surprising given that an order is, if I recall, less than 5 dollars. It's worth stopping here for the onion rings alone. Our party of 6 was very pleased with every dish and every appetizer. PORTIONS and PRICING: Free refills on soft drinks. Great. Portions are quite generous, and which makes the pricing even more surprising. The "lunch" size of the country fried steak was what I'd normally expect of a dinner-sized portion. The salads were quite large -- truly meals in and of themselves, as one would hope -- and the french fries served on the side were quite plentiful. Basically, I hate going to restaurants because I always feel ripped off. Cheddar's, on the other hand, with its fantastic portions and quality, is the first place I've been to in a while that I actually left *happy*. SERVICE: On a busy Friday night, we didn't even have to ask for refills. Our waiter noticed our drinks getting low and brought out refills without asking before we bottomed out. There were a couple of mistakes made -- wrong salad, missing salad dressing and sauce -- but the service was quick and attentive. Though I can only vouch for our particular waiter, the service was never fake and formal, but was personal and genuine. I'd much rather some personality in my server over someone who can't do better than "Yes, sir" and "Sorry about that, ma'am". The one bad note is that the manager seemed to be quite angry. He was standing in the kitchen doorway yelling at people in view of the customers, and the staff seemed eager to stay and talk to customers for as long as possible to avoid him. I'm not sure if something was going wrong that night or if the manager is just one of those guys who shouldn't be given any power, but our experience was wonderful and certainly didn't merit any staff getting yelled at. OTHER THOUGHTS: This place is almost always busy. We were fortunate enough to only wait ~25 minutes on a Friday night, but some weekends the wait is an hour and a half. Plan accordingly. We came here to introduce family to a friend, and even on a busy Friday night, we are able to have a conversation comfortably and without having to yell across the table. It's a casual place that's also nice enough to bring business contacts. As for what the one-star reviewers have said, it seems that Matthew H. perhaps suffered largely because of the bumpy opening hours. Both reviewers complained about getting the wrong food -- something we also experienced. However, I can't understand where D C. got the "horrible food" idea from. The food was better than "good" -- it was truly great. I would be *excited* to eat here again. But the complaints about wrong orders, delayed service, and the like are certainly valid concerns and could understandably ruin a dining experience. I have no idea how common these issues are, since I've only eaten at this restaurant once. SUMMARY: Great food in large portions at low prices, in a comfortable atmosphere with great service. Yeah, it's that good. There's a reason this place is always busy.

We had an awesome meal. We were pleasantly surprised after all the bad reviews. We went at about 4pm, but service was prompt, meal was fresh and very tasty. We got or food in less than 10 mins. We say give it a try.

Mediocre food; reasonable prices. Onion rings were good, red rice and beans mediocre, rib eye steak too fatty to eat. Would not go back for a meal. Maybe for onion rings.

On bitterly cold Sunday Dec 22nd around 4:00PM went to Cheddars for dinner. We were sited approx ten minutes then the server came. Her name was Alyssa. She asked about drink right away. We didn't drink soda and we ordered just two ice water. She dropped the drink then left. Approx. three minutes the other table have ten guess came in. She great them and took the order immediately. We had wait for ten minutes after she took other table order to order our food. Then our food came in another ten minutes. So since we came and got our food to eat total almost half hour. This was ridiculous and very slow service. She didn't even come to fill out our water. The server also was not smile when she introduce herself. It was sad another lady came and asked how we were doing. Then we said service was not good. She said just started the jobs three days ago as a manager. She need to find out what was going on. Then when we checked out we saw her left the restaurant and look like ready to going home. What kind a manager like that? She should be find out and make the customer happy before leaving the building. This was the second time we ate there with the bad service. Seems like service not important for Cheddar's. Too bad we will not gonna return back since our experience was horrible.

sold out of ribs (their signature item) by 6pm on saturday! the ribeye was paper thin and obviously over cooked because of it. the management (fat blonde woman), was argumentative and refused to do any type of discounts for our troubles. embarrassing how incompetent this restaurant wass. contacted corporate.

Waited 45 minutes. Okay, that's expected for a Saturday night. The onion rings appetizer was all batter, not much onion. I prefer more onion, but to each their own. It was still edible. But the dinner was just not good. Mushrooms and green beans very clearly came out of a can. Dijon cream on my chicken was literally just dijon mustard with nothing added to it, and it was wayyy too much. Chicken was nothing too special. The broccoli cheese casserole had way too much cheese (I didn't even know that was possible) and it was just 2 pieces of broccoli with some rice. The baked potato was good, but I'm not sure how you could mess that up. My friend also didn't get his salad until after the meal was over. All in all, the meal wasn't all too edible. The service was pretty good though, waitress was nice. But I don't think I'll be back again. Might as well go to Applebees or Olive Garden or something if you're looking for your typical Saturday night restaurant..

Great food, very good prices and good service. The building is beautiful. Lots of things made from scratch. Love the buffalo strips. Very good ribs for a chain sort of place. My only complaint is... I would like to see them add New York style cheesecake back to the menu. Highly recommend!

I'd heard that this place was pretty good, so my sister and I gave it a shot last night. The parking lot was jam packed, but the restaurant itself is so massively huge that we only waited a couple if minutes for a table. Cheddar's is called a 'casual cafe,' and it definitely draws a family crowd. The ambiance clashes with the menu of reasonably priced American home style staples. The lack of lighting, decorative ceiling fans, and minimalist decor suggest a more upscale place, which was a little weird for 'casual dining.' Service was fine; our waitress was friendly, and in spite of the crowds, service was quick. We ordered mozzarella sticks and chips with queso (beef with the cheese sauce is a FREE option, and we took it!), and these were good. I got the New Orleans Pasta, pretty good except for the hot dog chunks in it? Take those out and I'd recommend it. The Texas toast was delicious. My sister was pleased with her chicken strips and steak combo plate. We were far too full for dessert and both took home leftovers. A good option for an affordable dinner AFTER a day of shopping...we went to the mall after and were too full to shop properly. My biggest issue with Cheddar's is that they're trying to be too much. Match up the decor with the menu and this could be a classic American restaurant. 3/5
