My favorite Thai place in the metro. It is small and it can be very busy. Sometimes the service is very slow, but sometimes it's perfect (and it may be due to things happening in the kitchen). I love the Tofu Pad Thai most of all, but have also had the House Special Fried Rice, and a couple of the curries. ALL DELICIOUS! Also love the coconut soup! New note - There is a new server that is very pissy and never smiles. She needs an attitude adjustment.

A wonderful little place! I've never dined-in but the dining room is very cute and very clean. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is wonderful. I've ordered pick-up from here a few times and never once had to wait. As long as I live nearby I will be a customer. Just a little tip: the chicken pad wun sen is an excellent lighter choice for the beginner. While I love the curries and spicier dishes, PWS is my go-to. The noodles are drug-like in their deliciousness. If you don't like spicy, be sure to let them know. 1 star is a tiny bit of heat so if you don't want any heat, speak up. I prefer a 2 (or if I'm feeling particularly adventurous, a 2.5).

Yammy Yammy yammy! Holy heck! Delicious, inexpensive, fast. I'll be back whenever I'm rolling through for sure. Final advice... They actually make the food as spicy as their spicy levels dictate. I had the five stars and it heated me up just right. My wife had to go with the six and she loved the heat level which would make most of the rest of us cry.

Best Thai spicy red curry fried rice with chicken, green beans & red/green peppers from Zuzap. I'm glad that I decided to stop in for a delicious dinner.

This place gets such great reviews so I gave it another chance after initial disappointment. The result was unfortunately the same. Both visits here have been no more than okay, but my complaint was greasy food. Even the veggie summer rolls were oily. That was without the peanut sauce that also had lots of added oil. After four items here everything appears to be cooked in or prepared with much more oil than any other Thai food I have had. It feels heavy and overdone. I cannot explain vegetable summer rolls and the need to add so much (any) oil. Much better choices very nearby.

I came for lunch today and ordered kaw soi- a curry gravy/egg noodle soup dish with tofu and veggies. My food came out very fast and I didn't wait long at all, which I was concerned about after reading a few other reviews. The flavor was pretty good, I chose my spice level to be very hot, which I felt I could have gone much spicier on. I did get an extra dollar charge next to what said (4 star for my "very hot" spice level)... Not sure what that was from or why I got it, so I wasn't very happy with that, but the food is tasty and fresh. The egg drop soup needed a little bit more seasoning (salt/pepper). I think I still prefer the flavors at aroy dee and Thai flavors a little more, but it's solid Thai food for this side of town.

Waited about 40 minutes for the soup to arrive. It's soup. Another 15m for entrees. I ordered shrimp & scallop phad thai. It had 4 shrimps and no scallops. They don't even take the Not much flavor. I also ordered sticky rice that never arrived. The server didn't check on us once. Prices are good. Food is mediocre. Waiting time is unacceptable.

OK- to be clear- this review is being written not because of the servers...but the cooks/owner who insist on taking too long to get the food out. I have been a long time fan, brought new people, and have even put up with absolutely HORRIBLE SERVICE because it took 90 mins to have a 35 minute lunch! I ordered 4 lunches to go- it took them 1 hour to make them. Unacceptable. I feel so bad for the servers who have no control over this. It's called FIFO Kitchen manager or Owner...Unfortunately you have lost my support and I will NEVER come there again and I will tell hundreds about this experience.

The price you pay for all the items you get is an awesome deal. The food itself is amazing. All the flavors pop. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the wait is long to get your food and to pay during lunch hour. We waited for our checks for about 20 minutes. But honestly, it's worth the wait for the quality of food you are getting. Asian fast food atmosphere for the quality of a nice restaurant.

I bookmarked this restaurant sometime ago because I saw some good reviews about the place. I have tried a couple of other Thai restaurants nearby and frankly, I was surprised on how many Thai restaurants around University Avenue in Clive. Thus, I wanted to try and compare. The place was hard to find because it was inside a strip mall behind the street facing stores. You have to look for Granite City and Anglo Jewelry and it's almost directly behind Anglo. The place was small and when I first came there during lunch, they were very busy. I took the last open table, and waited awhile for the server to take my order. She seemed to wait on every table, with another lady helping with running food and handling check out. I was in a time crunch so I know next time not to come here during peak lunch time. The lunch menu was great and you had choice to do a combo menu to add soup and veggie egg roll as an economy set. There's also another grade of the set and you get more appetizer. The tom yum soup that came with the economy set tasted pretty good but there was no meat or shrimp. Just veggies. The egg roll was nice and crunchy. I ordered green curry for my entree. It was hot and delicious! It was fragrant and so yummy with hot rice. I was in love. I left town to Omaha and on my way back from Omaha, I passed Clive again and decided I wanted more of Zuzap. I stopped there though it was out of my way because I liked what I had last time. They were not as busy at dinner time. The menu was considerably bigger and you also had the choices to make your meal a combo. I chose pad woon seen this time, which was a stir fry of glass noodles with meats and vegetables. I was tempted to order my fave dish, pad kra pouw or basil stir fry with my choice of meat, but I recently learned how to make it and had it too often at home now. Thus why I was branching out and tried other things. I made it a combo with shrimp wonton soup and pork egg roll. What a difference in taste though compared to lunch. Wondering if they had a different cook for dinner? My soup and egg roll came. The soup was just broth with one itty bitty wonton with tiny shrimps that were very shrimpy. It didn't have a good taste. Plus, there was absolutely nothing else in there! The broth wasn't even good! It was a poor excuse for wonton soup. Don't order it! I felt kinda robbed on that one. The pork egg roll used a different skin compared to the veggie egg roll. The veggie egg roll was smooth and crunchy. This one had bubbles on the surface. They made it small but it ended up having too many layers of uncooked skin inside that wasn't crispy. Plus, it didn't have much taste to it. In conclusion, the stuff that came with the combo weren't the regular stuff they would serve if you order it as appetizer separately. It's the cheap watered down versions and it was disappointing. It should at least still be good, just perhaps smaller portion. I could understand if it were free. You were paying for these. There was an upcharge. I didn't feel the cheapness so much at lunch because I guess Lunch should be cheaper and I had less expectation compared to dinner. Then, my noodle came and it was so salty. I felt bad to complain again because I already expressed my opinion on how ridiculous the wonton soup was. So I continued eating it and drank water. Finally after a couple of bites, I ordered rice with it to cut the salt. I ate what I could, which was not much. After I was done, I told the waitress who was very nice and sweet about the salt level on my noodles. She was surprised and told the kitchen. When she came back she told me sorry and that the cook dumped too much sauce in it. Oh...okay....?! I got my check and they charged me full price for everything. They didn't do jack after two complaints of serving me hot liquid with nothing in it and called it soup, and a very salty noodles. Two experiences, but very different! Dinner was horrible however, it wasn't just bad. I'm not sure if I would come back now since there are plenty of other choices nearby. If they were to get consistent, it would have been a great place. It was just okay, for now, at best.

Oh man probably one of my favorite Pad Thai around! Also the Tom Ka Gai is oh so good!

    (5)
  • Tom D.

Food was average. The Pad Thai was bland , it lacked flavor. Summer rolls were ok , its like they stuffed shredded lettuce into rice paper. The Tom Yum soup was very good. It was the best part.

Excellent quaint service and amazing food. Food takes a looong time, which I perceive as a sign of fresh, made-to-order nosh. And it does not disappoint. I loved the Tom Kai coconut soup and the General Tsao chicken :) Can't wait to return, hopefully many more times to introduce my friends to the best Thai food in Iowa!!!

This place is my go-to for great Thai food. They have great dinner & lunch specials! The lunch special includes a drink, half-order appetizer, small soup and full size main dish. The dinner special includes the same thing but not including a drink. The food is very flavorful & aromatic. When coming here, we always plan for a 2 hour meal-time if going as a group. There service tends to be slow but the food is well worth the wait.

3 stars as the dining experience took forever. Service is slow but food is great. We noticed they produce quite a bit of take out quite quickly. If you want to dine in the place is small and expect to be there for more than an hour. I would definitely order take out for a return trip due to quality of food. Loved the coconut soup...not so much on the fried dumplings that the menu stated were pan seared?!

Ate here several times, last Friday being the most recent. Had lunch special, with herb soup (my favorite) and cashew chicken. Both very good. Service as usual was very good.

Great food reasonable price. Take out is best in my experience as dine is can be slow. Waitresses are nice (and cute!) and very friendly. I have tried noodles and rice entries to find that both heat up nicely. Delivery is an option! This is fairly new!!

Delish! A cute little whole-in-the-wall with excellent Thai food. Excellent prices as well. The Tom Kai coconut soup is phenomenal.

Zuzu restaurant. One person working the entire restaurant (in house, busing tables, takeout orders, answering phones the whole nine) so order when she comes to take your drink order or you might be waiting for awhile. If you want ice in your water you will have to ask for it which is annoying IMO! One interesting thing I did notice while I was eating. A guy walked in sat down said a few words to the waitress and bam had his food..apparently he knew the drill and called ahead so it was ready when he arrived. Small inside, you can sit anywhere. Best to come before the dinner rush to avoid waiting. Shrimp wonton soup was a new item and it was OK. Probably should have went with the coconut soup. Mango delight to was my entree it was tasty with shrimp and med spice level. If you come know that your not getting in and out quick, but you are getting pretty good Thai food.

  • Chao Z.

Food is good. But half a hour waiting if you are lucky. They only have one or two cooks. But everything is fresh cooked so like it. They made the food in a delicate manner and the newly added dessert is also very interesting. It is one of my common place for casual out.

I haven't tried their Thai food yet, but their Chinese food is the best in town.

No complaints whatsoever ! I have been a repeating customer for both dine-in and take out , Everything is wonderful and excellent service. I have try other Thai places in Des Moines area but they turn out to be pretty disappointing , that's why I'm rating this place 5 stars for both Food and service !

Kind of hard to find, but has really good food. Be carefull how spicy you order it, I made mine a bit to spicy but it was still good. Kitchen staff was a bit rude, I had reordered my food for lunch, took way longer than they had said. I heard "He should have reordered" come from the kitchen. Though the waitress did speak up and tell him it was reordered. Over all, id go back and try more things. Hopefully during a non busy time.

Fantastic! The food was great and the service was tremedous. We dined at ZuZap on a Friday night cloase to 7pm and its was half full when we arrived and was packed (but no waiting list) when we left. We ordered the shimp rangoon for an appetizer. The pastry was ligth and flaky and the shrimp filling hot and fresh. It was a great start to our meal. I ordered the Chicken Red Curry with level 6 heat and rice noodles. The dish as a whole was excellent. Good portion, good spiciness and good veggies. The chicken was a little bland when eaten alone but I made sure to get plenty of curry on it before devouring it. My wife ordered the Chicken Jungle Curry with Chinese noodles. This was more of a broth curry but she did enjoy it. She ordered it with level 3 spice and she said it was the right amount of heat for her. She did not enjoy the chinese noodles as much as she had hoped. But she was going out on a limb trying them. All in all a great meal and the prices were very reasonable. We will be back to ZuZap soon!

Good and pretty healthy overall. I ordered for pick up for office meeting and they got all orders correctly and promptly. Will be back! Atmosphere is decent/ ok, not great, why I only gave 4 stars vs 5.

Visited Des Moines during a recent business trip. Picked this place because of the 4 star ratings on Yelp and the proximity to our hotel. Seems there was just one gal (very friendly and pleasant) working the entire restaurant. We had the Tom Kha Gai (Coconut Milk Soup) which was very good. Split an entree of Green Cury with chicken. Food was great! The fact that they take AMEX was a plus! I would definitely eat there again if I'm ever in Des Moines. :)

I have eaten at ZuZap a couple times and have not been disappointed. The Pad Thai is great as well as the Hot and Sour soup ( nice and spicy).

Solid 4-star... could be better but with price and location it gets the 4. Just keep in mind a 3 on their spicy scale is pretty darn hot.

Zuzap was chosen on a whim based on other great reviews here. I had heard of Cool Basil, but Zuzap was closer to me. It's right behind Granite City in a hole-in-the-wall type of place. We went right after 5 on a Saturday when they opened and were the 2nd pair of people there. It's a cozy, and nice little place and not at all sketchy! We were immediately greeted warmly, and brought water. The menu has lots of options, but since I've never had Thai before, I don't know how authentic it is. All I know was it all sounded delicious! I chose a dinner combo and picked a soup, egg roll, and entree. I got Coconut Soup (different, yet amazing!), a vegetable egg roll, and Green Curry. You could choose a spicyness level if you wanted, but I went with the basic which was just the right amount of kick. I also got young coconut juice, which was made with roasted coconut. The food was all completely fantastic! The service was incredibly warm and speedy. By the time my aunt and I left, the place was almost filled! I have absolutely no complaints! I will be a repeat customer!

I typically order the pick three option. Usually pleasantly surprised too. Love the stir fry/noodle entrees. Usually get a 4 star and it's perfect for me.

Food was fantastic as always, had the street BBQ for the first time and it was delicious. But I have to say the James Bond soundtrack really made the evening.

Very very good thai food. I lived in Thailand for 5 years and this was pretty authentic. I started with the chicken curry puffs. I know that doesn't sound authentic but when I was in Thailand they had these curry puffs everywhere. They would sell them at stands on the street. Think of it as a savory turnover filled chicken curry. It was really good. I then ordered the red curry fried rice. This was somewhat authentic. In Thailand when I ordered fried rice it was never mixed with curry like this, but despite this it was very good. There were also bell peppers mixed in which isn't very authentic either. All that being said, it was very very good. Good amount of sweetness balanced with spice and some tang from the lime that came with the rice. Highly recommend it. I ordered it with a spice level of 2 (out of 6) and it was hot enough although I will probably order a level 3 next time. Overall this is a great Thai restaurant, would rate it better than Thai Flavors and am excited to return.

Tried this location tonight based on the reviews. I thought the inside decor was nice and the seating & lighting was romantic to me. There was only one server for all the tables and with six tables he seemed a bit overwhelmed but did a good job (things just took a long time & he didn't get a chance to refill my glass that sat empty for some time). My honey had the Hot & Sour Soup which was spicy and probably the best we have both ever had anywhere. The Pork Spring Rolls were tasty and my Shrimp Wonton Soup was nice too. We took advantage of the dinner special that includes a soup, spring roll choice and a rice, noodle or stir fry entree for $12.95. I tried the Ambrosia Chicken and the sauce seemed more like a gravy (thick & brown) than a sauce. My fiance had the Spicy Noodle entree with beef and he liked his but his 5 spicy request did not arrive at the table that way. He said it was a low on the spicy level. I will have to visit another day to be sure, but the entrees and service issue didn't allow a higher star this time.

I finally made it to Zuzap's for dinner and had another great experience! I go the dinner special with Gaw Laow for my soup, a vegetarian spring roll and I love curry so this time I got the Pineapple Curry. I ordered both my soup and curry at a medium level. The soup was spicy! My boyfriend ordered his Thai Coconut Soup hot and mine was a lot hotter than his. My lips were burning but the flavor was good so I kept eating it. I loved the Pineapple curry. It had just the right level of spice and the pineapple with bell peppers and chicken was a great combination. Both my boyfriend and I had enough to take home for a second meal. The service was also much better this time compared to when I had lunch there. The waitress was much more friendly and attentive. We will definitely continue to eat here!

I've been to Zuzap a couple of times now. The service has tended toward slow. But it is still friendly. The food is worth the wait! The first time I got green curry and the second I had a yummy noodle dish. My dining companions both times dug their selections too. Yummy Thai in Clive. Sweet.

Usually great food and great service but after tonight when we walked out before our dinner was served, we were disappointed. We were there an hour an a half and only received our appetizer. We were told they were down to one chef and we are very flexible people but were really disappointed that ALL the take out folks were recieving their food before all the dine in guests were. I hope they can prepare for the next Friday night and have enough staff on hand because the food is amazing!!

Bad service because it's slow service. Extra slow and extra bad on weekends. Food is decent, if you have a couple of hours to wait. I recommend carry-out on a weeknight.

We went to Zuzap hearing it was the best Thai food in town and recently moving from Chicago I was looking for my new go to Thai place. When we arrived there was a large table of maybe 15 people and only one server so needless to say we were waiting a long time. After we finally got someone to take our order it took a good 30 min just to get our drinks. The apps were very good we had the shrimp rangoon and spring rolls both of which were tasty and very fresh. The big problems came when the main courses arrived. First I like my food very spicy so ordered the 4 or 5 and when it came out it had absolutely zero spice to it. In fact one of the people in my party ordered a level 3 and hers tasted the same as mine which was not spicy at all. The biggest issue was when my wife went to take her first bite of foot and sitting on top was a beautiful fly sitting on top of her Pad Thai. When we grabed the waitress (who mind you was still the only one working even though 4 more tables had arrived in addition to the 15 person table) and showed her. She was very apologetic but as she walked away said dont worry we wont just take it off and give you the same dish which kind of weirded out my wife. The owner did bring out a new one (we hope it was new) and just kind of threw it down without saying sorry for the fly or acknowledging the situation at all. The bill came and everything was still full price on there and not saying that we deserved something for free but a free app maybe would have made up for the shitty service and fly garnish just a little. That being said the food was good but their customer service needs a whole lot of work. On a side note, the crappy service was by no means the servers fault as they were grossly understaffed and fell more onto the owners in my opinion.

I think I've tried them all, and Zuzap wins the prize for best Thai restaurant in the metro. The Choo Chee and Khao Soy are superb. I've tried other items - which are very good - but I keep coming back to these two. I can't say enough about the staff. They are attentive to your needs and my water glass is rarely empty. Zuzap is pretty much packed every M-F for lunch, so they must be doing something right.

You know what? I was sick of hamburgers and sandwiches and gas station fried chicken.. yes, fresh fried chicken at gas stations, thank you midwest you almost make me want to drive cross country for the fun of it, and I settled at the local La Quinta Inn and Zuzap delivered as ordered to me. Thank you. I got the panang curry, more peanut butter than curry, and it satisfied a need. I think for this neck of the woods you get what you give and this local is giving a bit of AMERICA good and hard to Zuzap, but I would like a little more Thai in the mix.

I LOVE Thai food. I took a dinner special. The spring roll is automatic... and I chose veggie. Lovely crisp little thing full of rich carrot and other veggies. My soup choice was the Buddha Feast... with pumpkin and zucchini and mushroom in a spicy broth. I asked for Tofu instead of meat. Again... just delicious. I stayed on the pumpkin theme with Pumpkin Curry. Amazing red curry sauce and cubes of pumpkin, tofu [my choice], and red and green bell pepper strips. I was a happy dude... using the spoon to get every last drop of curry sauce from the plate to my mouth. Sweet service, too.

I first would like to start this out by saying we have excellent Thai places in Minnesota so the bar is set really high for my standards. I came in here after a long days of work/travel and had a few beers and dinner due to my craving for Thai and the location to the Marriott I was staying at. Since the reviews were all over the place of what to try, I went with the easiest one to not screw up, the Pad Thai. Normally I would not go with this as it is more American than Thai, but I also know it is usually a decent dish dish (I prefer curry dishes). I ordered the Pad Thai w/ chicken spicy 3.5 (based on reviews 3 was hot). The dish came out extremely hot (temperature wise) so I was excited. However, when I went to swirl the noodles around they were all stuck to eachother (over cooked). Secondly there was not any spice to it, and lastly there was no flavor. The best part of my meal was the beer. Since the beer was the best part of my meal I have to give this a 1 because I could have gone to Granite City Food & Brewery across the street and drank some excellent beer and had a wonderful burger or steak. However, my weakness for Thai did me in today. Sadly I will not eat at this establishment again.

Its good place to have some Thai food...I had tried several other Thai restaurants in the west des moines area this one probably the cheapest..Not all the items on the menu are good....I don't like there PAD THAI ...their friend rice is good. I like their egg drop and tom yam mushroom soup...

I'm from the bay area (SF) and we get really good and cheap Thai food. This place pales in comparison. But hey, I'm in Des Moines... and I must say this place comes closest to bay area standards for asian cuisine. If you're traveling with Indian colleagues, like I was, you must take them here and make them try the Tom Yum Soup. They may also like the music over the PA (more than one Indian colleague said the music was that of their childhood...). I believe the only reason I didn't have to eat here every meal was because my Indian colleagues were being considerate of me.

So glad to discover Thai food near our hotel thanks to Yelpers who steered us here. This is the best Thai I've found anywhere and we've tried several in Denver. Chicken with vegetables & rice suited hubs just fine. I enjoyed the Royal Noodles with chicken which was a bit sweeter than I expected, but still yummy good. We'll return when we get back to Des Moines, but it's a long drive from Denver so please keep it alive until we can return next year. Pleasant decor added to the experience and friendly service. A little tricky to find positioned in the back tier of a strip mall behind a larger restaurant, but Google maps has it right.

Stopped in here the other night for dinner and found it to be quite pleasing. It is a small establishment but kind of had a homey feel to it and the server I had was extremely polite, though a bit slow through the meal. There are quite a few options on the menu and there website is very helpful as well with pictures of some of the dishes. I had the Jungle Curry with the hottest level they offer and my companion had the Crispy Angry Catfish at the same spice level. Both of our dishes were very good, but lacked the spicy kick I was hoping for. As well as being tasty and having very reasonable prices, the portion size is also good. I will definitely head back here to try out some other dishes. As I have noticed at almost all the Thai restaurants I have eaten at here in DSM the spice level seems to vary from visit to visit and by dish.

Zuzap has been one of my favorite restaurants for the past couple months. I go at least once a week, sometimes 2-3 times. I usually go wtih co-workers for lunch. The food is extremely flavorful, delicious, and authentic tasting. They have much more than your usual Pad Thai. Other selections such as curries (lots of different kinds), noodle dishes, Thai salads, unique stir-fry items, and much more. If you are a hot pepper junkie like me, Zuzap will definitely satisfy. The "hot" ranking system goes from 1 star up to 10. On the other hand, if you are not a fan of spice, they can do anything without spice as well. I have never had an incorrect order. Service is prompt and friendly. I've recommended this place to family and friends, and will continue to give recommendations for this awesome Thai restaurant.

Finding Thai food like this in Des Moines is a real treat. The food is unbelievable! Be careful when ordering, the spice levels are for the serious Thai food enthusiast. If you simply like flavorful with a bit of a kick, stick with a level 1 or 2. If you really like to sweat ... bring it on with a 4-6. They also have some dishes that are not spicy in case a member of your party does not like the heat. By far one of my favorite restaurants in the West Des Moines area.

I love Thai food and I've never had anything I didn't like here. Lunch is my favorite simply because it's cheaper and the portions seem to be the same as dinner - not sure on that but both very generous. I tend to stick with hot and found it varies.

Zuzap is the best Thai restaurant in Des Moines. There, I said it. It's better than Thai Flavors, Cool Basil, King and I, Ban Thai, whatever you got. It executes the classics really well--spicy, flavorful curries and tangy noodle dishes. Sure, it's in a strip mall out in the suburbs, but what makes Zuzap stand out from Des Moines' other (quite tasty) Thai places is the "street food" options--things you don't see on other menus in town.
