The food was good. There was nothing special. The service was good. We had lunch at 3 PM

This is the 5th time we have stopped. The first time we thought the food was great so we decided to stop again hoping we would have the same experience. It didn't happen and after this last time we will not be coming back. First the beans were starting to go bad. The waitress could have painted a smile on herself if only for show. She had the biggest frown ever. But the worst were the flies flying around you while you are trying to eat. All we did was spend our time swapping them away. Never again !

For all you people who gave this restaurant a good review, you need your taste buds checked!! There is nothing authentic or good about this place!! I was raised in Los Angeles California and have been in Iowa for 4 years. This is Mexican food for gringo's. Plain and simple. I ordered a 'picadillo" enchilada and a chile relleno. Absolutely gross. It was NOT a picadillo, tasteofcuba.com/picadill… , enchilada, it was a machaca enchilada, a bad one at that! Dry, flavorless. The chile relleno was hard, had seeds in it and the breading which should stick and be flavorful was entirely greasy and falling off the chile... that happens when you do not cook the chile properly and have a shitty breading. The rice and beans were bland. The best part of my meal was the coke I drank. I hear their margaritas are good (I don't believe it), but I don't drink, so I didn't try it. I could not eat it. It was NOT eatable at all. When the waiter came I told him of all this and he just shrugged and took my plate. Ok then. My husband ordered a burrito which he did not like either, it was BLAND!!! But he ate most of it cuz he was much hungrier than me I suppose. I just got grossed out after a few bites. You people who are saying it's authentic have obviously never had REAL Mexican food. Here is my advise if you want ANYTHING close to Mexican food in Des Moines... and I have been to many Mexican restaurants, MANY, it's my favorite food. There is a place across from the north side of Mercy hospital, I can't even remember the name despite being there so many times, I guess I didn't care cuz I know where it is and if I want anything close to authentic Mexican food, I go there... It's a small place, but if you want good Mexican food, go there. I wish I could give Mi Mexico 1/2 a star... oh well...

There is not much good to say about Mi Mexico. It is just another standard gringoized family Mexican restaurant that you find in places like white bread West Des Moines. Too many people think it is good and people travelling through on the interstate don't have much choice. The salsa was bad, overloaded with oregano to the point of bitterness and tons of onion hunks accompanying tasteless chips. Ms T's beef tostada and enchilada had no seasoning, good or bad. I had hope for my tacos al carbon. My hopes were dashed. The beef had never seen any carbon neither was there any flavor from a comal. The tortillas were dredged enchilada style and were absolutely soggy. I had to eat these tacos with a fork. No way could you pick them up. The meat was dressed with a tomato sauce making it sweet and sour, which was weird and inappropriate. The frijoles were not bad, but the rice was tasteless. Circumstances pretty much tied us to eating here and we did not expect much. We did not get much either. I recommend you find something else. These people were obviously run out of Mexico because they cooked like this.

Things must have had a dramatic change when reading some of these other reviews. If this is the best Mexican food in Des Moines, then pick somewhere else. ;)

Was tried from a long day of driving, and before checking in I went to this place, and what a surprise. It was really good food and inexpressive, I highly recommend it!

Hard to give it three full stars. It's my first time here- don't know if it is a chain or not. It has that feel- a typical Mexican restaurant chain. It caters to someone's idea of what gringo's want in a Mexican restaurant. Overloud colors, overloud piped in stereotypical music. The real disappointment, the food. Bland. I got the picadillo enchilada plate. I've had good picadillo before- with complex flavors. This was no where close. Bland for American taste buds. Many who are used to this. If that's what you want you'll likely enjoy it. If you are looking for more authentic Mexican fare, you might want to keep looking.

It's Mexican in Des Moines, Iowa. Nuff said. Well, OK, a bit more. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. Above average Midwest Mexican fare. Clearly making a real effort at home style Mexican food. Not as good as places I've been with closer Hispanic influence (Nevada, California, etc) BUT quite a bit better than typical. Stand outs: - staff was EXCELLENT - prompt service - very nice, clean, and conscientious decor. NOT a converted Happy Chef, Hardees, etc :-) - food was generous and quite tasty. Well made and bordering on authentic (in a good way) - outdoor patio Seems to be family owned and run. I'd guess it was Mama greeting and seating.

Nice stop off point between MN and KC, MO. Staff is super friendly. Plus free bean dip! Awesome!

The only thing good about this place is the margaritas. Everything else reminds me of taco bell.

  • Heather V.

Excellent food and very authentic. Looking forward to going back to try out the Margharitas that everyone is talking about. So far, it's the best Mexican in the Des Moines but still comes in second to Cazador in Ankeny or Perry.

  • Terry D.

Alot of good rating but I was disappointed. I sat at the bar to eat - business traveler, it was very dirty and torn apart. The food was alright, but the atmosphere needs alot of improvement.

This is the best place in Des Moines to get a margarita!!! And the service is awesome too-Jorge would have one in front of me within 5 min of sitting down, now thats good service! They also have a seperate menu with healthier, vegetarian options which is awesome and hard to find in Iowa, plus their produce is always fresh, and I heard a rumor that the owner is also an organic farmer or something, which makes me love it even more. If your looking for great mexican food, amazing margaritas, and awesome service go for Mi Mexico, you won't be disappointed.

The chips and salsa was very good. Not too salty or spicy. The two chicken burrito large combo was ok. The chicken was kinda plain and it wasn't anything special.

My husband and I were in the mood for mexican and hungry. We stopped in for what we hoped would be a good meal. We started with chips and salsa. The chips had good texture, but the Salsa was runny and flavorless. These were edible though. My husaband had a combination platter with tacos and an enchilada. I had the Enchiladas Sueza all with chicken. Our meals were much the same - Totally Flavorless. Mine came with a pile of what I expected to be lettuce, it had more of a pickled/slaw texture. My best guess is that it was lettuce left under a heat lamp with some of the green (very thin) tomatillo sauce on it. Even though I was hungry, I left one of my two enchiladas on my plate. The rice had no flavor what soever. On our rating scale this wan't just not good, it was bad. I really wish I had tried the margarita, but it would have to be one good margarita to save this place.

Joaquin R. said it best. You cannot mistake Mi Mexico for Oaxaca, but it comes awfully close. Great burritos, solid healthy choices, and while Chipotle can hit the spot when you're in a pinch and looking everywhere for food---if you're in West Des Moines and you want solid Mexican food in a part of the country you'd least expect to find it--Mi Mexico is where you should go.

Fast & friendly service, huge portions (even the small combos are gigantic), good food...this place is exactly as advertised. If I lived closer, I'd be a regular.

Large portions! I mean large! Warm fresh chips, salsa, beans!! Fresh chips are a deal breaker for me. Great service. Fast and friendly!!

Perfect pit stop! Wonderful find. We were driving through Des Moines and wanted to meet up quick with a friend. This was off the interstate and more appealing than the chains around like Applebee's. This was the perfect choice for fast and delicious. Fast and attentive service, yummy chips and salsa, and fast delivery! I ordered a chile relleno and wasn't disappointed. The restaurant interior was nice, lots of space, and pretty busy! We probably won't have the chance to stop again, but you never know. Would definitely recommend.

Horrible service!! Our server was obviously busy but made no effort whatsoever to even just be like "hey guys, I'm so sorry, we are slammed tonight, I'll be with you in just a minute." No customer service skills at all. A smile and just plain friendliness goes a longg way. We never did receive some of the items we asked for and my margarita was taken before I was even finished with it. Getting drink refills was almost impossible and we had to ask other servers/food runners to get our waitress several times. The guy who was in charge of chips though, was awesome! He was on top of it and brought us items our server should of been taking care of. When we asked to speak with the manager to let him know, he made excuses and said in 10 years, he's NEVER heard a complaint! Really? Never? Yeah, right. We can't be the only unhappy ones in 10 years. Aside from the service, the food was pretty good. The salsa was meh. We had chicken fajitas which were pretty good and the margaritas were also good.

  • Dave M.

The service was fine and the price for lunch was reasonable ($6 lunch special #1), but this place just does not have anything special about it. If I were forced to think of a word to describe the food it would be "bland". You know what I mean? The kind of place where you know you ate there, but you simply cannot define the taste because it made no impact on the palate. Oh well.

After being our "go-to" Mexican restaurant in the Des Moines area for many years we've experienced three not-so-great experiences recently at our former favorite. It's mainly the food, which seems now to settle into the same rut as other "Mexican" restaurants in the Midwest; cheap ingredients (? it sure tastes different), poorly prepared, and provided with average to poor service. Margarita's were watery, homemade chips to cooked too long, there was an abundance of cheese on everything, and our food obviously sat under a heat lamp, well, for a long time. Two of these experiences were in the bar, one of favorite places in town for a fun evening. We took out-of-town friends to show off the place on two of these occasions and were frankly a bit embarrassed. Maybe we just hit on a few nights of poor service. Hopefully. We'll give it another shot but at 0-for-3 of late we're not getting our hopes up too much.

Tough call with this place. Margaritas are legit, some of the best I have ever had. That said food was okay, somewhat on the blander side but my experience has been that is closer to authentic Mexican than the over season and sauced stuff you get at the national chains. I have yet to find truly great Mexican in this city. They offer a bean dip with the standard chips and salsa. My advice, grabs some tacos and margs and sit out on the patio.

Great food, even better service and by far the best margaritas. My wife had the fajitas which I could not resist trying one. I had the super burrito and that was really good. Everything tasted so fresh and was prepared to perfection. Can't wait to visit again.

Update: the Carne Asada is the best in Iowa. Hands down. Ooooops, if you like cranberry get the Bartender's Special margarita. BAAYYYYUM!

Came in for a solo lunch and decided a bar setting would be great to indulge in a margarita over a tamale. I was right. I looked around and noticed all these "mini margaritas" around me....and I knew I wanted more than a mini...like normal size....but hey...all these ladies are doing it, so I say, "I'll have a margarita". No specification of size...no specified flavor. Just a margarita. Lets see what the bartnder does....then Bam! I got it! In front of me magic began. Quickly, messily and magically limes and lemons were cut and squeezed into a large shaker, then muddled with actuall limes as a VERY generous portion of tequila made the mix. He lightly iced the shaker, poured me a mini margarita out of it and gave me both the full mini glass and remainder of the shaker. So sure...the glass is small, but the overall portion is majestic, and tastey!

Best Mexican in Des Moines. Excellent food, the best service! Seriously, the staff works their rear ends off to make sure every customer is taken care of at every minute. Bravo to their staff!

OMG! I must have come to this place on the wrong night. I had been driving for about six hours, on my way back to Kansas from Wisconsin and wanted a good meal before enduring the rest of my drive home. Yelpers had some decent reviews for the place so we gave it a shot. This particular night there was a big party occupying one side of the restaurant, which is completely fine, except for the fact that these party-goers were TRASHED. Their voices were a little too elevated for my liking; not one statement could be completed without a WHOOOOO!!!!!!! following it. Disturbing. There might have been a fight at one point also, who knows. Margaritas must have been extra special for this party. Anyway, the food was 'meh', service was 'meh'. Quite frankly, the menu didn't have many appetizing descriptions so it was very difficult for me to decide on an entree. Couldn't find a chimichanga so I settled for a pork burrito. By the time we got our meal, I had filled up on chips, salsa and queso, which isn't really that bad seeing as the burrito was pretty gross. I left more than half of it, got my check and drove on home.

Just what I wanted. This is food like I grew up with. Simple, bad for you, great tasting. The margaritas are fantastic. I had the "small" combination of a chili relleno and shredded beef enchilada. It was a very generous portion of food that came with rice, retried beans, and the complimentary chips and salsa. I was by myself, so this was more than enough food. I left completely satisfied and full. The relleno wasn't overcooked, the shredded beef enchilada was tender. The lot was spicy enough to give you a sniffle, but not so hot you had stop eating to recover. And I had the Cadillac Margarita. I'd come back for this alone, they don't skimp on the content. Very tasty and I was happy not to need to drive anything. Very good. If you're from California, you'll recognize this comfort food immediately, this place reminds me of the food I grew up with. Two thumbs up, I'll be back.

I love the consistent and delicious food. They have friendly staff and fast service. It is a unique Mexican experience and not the typical run of the mill repeat menu as other places.

    (5)
  • Paul D.

Decent, not notable, food. OK stop it you're on the road; doubt I'd eat there if I lived there. Very limited vegetarian options. Like 2. We had very good service. LOUD, as mentioned, DRUNKS, as mentioned. Our booth location was OK. If we had been a couple sections over I would have asked to get moved.

  • Jill D.

Meh. Food is Cisco-type food out of a can. Bland and boring. Service was fine. I probably won't return, as I can find much better elsewhere in DSM.

  • Ryan M.

Better than average for the price, personable staff, great margaritas!

  • Will C.

I hesitate to give a 5 star review, but I really can't say anything bad about this place. I grew up in Arizona and California and honestly this place competes with some of the best out there. Make sure to order an entree, this is where they really shine. Great flavors, big portions (enough to share), and great atmosphere. I had the Chicken Pipian ("authentic Mexican dish. Chicken strips cooked with a mole-like sauce with a pumpkin seed flavor") with corn tortillas. It was absolutely delicious! Tortillas chips are hot, fresh, tasty and come with some great salsa choices and a side of refried beans.

This is a fine place.... a little noisy... but people eat here and it is crowded for a reason! The chips are served with a decent salsa and some refried beans. Nice additional touch. The tamales... the best I have had. Masa Harina, lard, seasoned pork. Awesome! The cheese enchilada was not as good as my own... but that is common. : ) My ancho sauce rocks. But these were much better than average. The Chili Relleno was perfect. Perfect egg batter. Perfect poblano preparation [which is tedious]. Perfect cheese. Perfect ranchero sauce. The rice was better than average. The beans were excellent... and I detected lard once again. Yay! The service is a team approach. Every person there checks on you, takes food and drink orders, delivers food and drinks, clears the table, etc. I had 5 different young men help me out with spectacular efficiency. I was totally... TOTALLY impressed.

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the Des Moines area. Everyone here says that all the Mexican restaurants are all the same. This is the cream that rises to the top my friends! It is extremely authentic Mexican anyone who love Mexican food will love this place! It is still an inexpensive meal similar menu to most Mexican restaurants. You have you small plate dinners and large dinners. Except here most dish's come with coleslaw. As i am not a coleslaw fan I can only go on what others have told me that it is very tasty. The service is great from the door to the bar friendly makes you feel like family. Do not be thrown off when they speak Spanish and wait for a second then ask in English. Some people do not like it I do adds to the atmosphere of it being authentic! Plus I have learned some more Spanish! Have the enchiladas they are my favorite here smothered with cheese, cheese and more cheese!!! The traditional margaritas are the best in town!

A bunch of coworkers and I went for lunch. The food was okay, the service mediocre. I don't know if this is standard, but those that were paying with cash were asked if they wanted any change back. I think that's such a rude way of asking for a tip. Just give the change and, if the service warranted it, you'll get a tip! This is where the review goes South. While we were eating, a ROACH came running accross our table. Completely off-putting. We will not be back.

  • Robert B.

Most overrated Mexican restaurant in this area/ It's just off I-80/35, so it probably gets a lot of folks who are hungry and tired enough to eat the menu and the napkins. Went there one (and only) time for lunch. Slow service, bland food. Uncomfortable table location. Maybe you need several of their touted margaritas to blur the senses before you eat.

Moving to Des Moines from Atlanta, I found myself missing good mexican food. Luckily, I went to a quick business lunch at Mi Mexico and finally found a great place for mexican food! Their salsa has a kick to it as does their cheese dip. The guacamole is good too! I loved my main dish, the Arroz Con Camarones! I got the half portion and had plenty. It came with tortillas but I didn't even use them as it was excellent without them. The rest of the group also liked their dishes as well.

From reading all the reviews, it seems that this location has good and bad days. The place is always busy but I think it is just a nice loud environment that families and groups have a nice time at. The drinks we have ordered are always good, but the food is just alright. The service is always good too, but this cannot be the best Iowa has to offer.

We were passing through Des Moines & stopped based on reviews here. My wife & 3 kids ate lunch for $33. The food was very good, the portions were huge and the service was impeccable! Highly recommend it!

A couple of hours from Oaxaca, over the Sierra Madre mountains, is the sleepy, beachside town of Puerto Escondido. When my friends Jen and Ryan parked their car and made their way to the beach, they were followed by a local man with chairs and an umbrella who placed them where they chose to sit. "Keep the Cokes coming," cried Ryan, after finishing the fish tacos brought to their attention. No one would mistake this part of Iowa for Puerto Escondido...certainly not Guillermo, our able host at Mi Mexico. I'll be honest. The tableau of de rigeur Mexican decor didn't quite inspire confidence but I ordered the Pollo Azado Burrito and Ryan, the Flaco Burrito, off the "Fresh and Healthy Choices" menu. Stuffed with whole black beans, Spanish rice, chunks of white chicken and vegetables, the Pollo Azado was muy bueno. Drenched in Mi Mexico's house salsa and liberally sprinkled with jalapenos, I almost forgot that I wasn't in California anymore - the home of the best damn burritos in the world. I looked over at Ryan to see how he was doing just as he looked up and cried, "Keep the Cokes coming!" I swear I think I saw him squint when he said it ... as if the sun was reflecting off the azure waters of a beautiful memory.

I went here based on the the superior ratings that it had received to date and felt that I really needed to write this review to compensate. The chips and salsa were mediocre, bean dip was a nice addition. Margarita was moderate, camarones de la diabla was fairly good, service was ok and portions too large. I would go back, but only for something convenient.

Best Mexican restaurant we've tried yet in the Des Moines metro. Much more authentic than others we've tried. And (happily) much more affordable than many other restaurants in the area. Note that the lunch menu is cheaper than the supper menu... We enjoyed our meal on the patio (service slow on the patio on a Monday night; suspect reduced staff since reduced quantity of patrons).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
