Food is excellent. Great variety for a buffet and friendly service. Would recommend to friends.

The gentleman that was cleaning our table and getting our drinks was great. He was friendly and very quick to grab anything we needed. The woman who was working the cash register was extremely hostile to my group. She made it feel like it was a overwhelming burden to split the check among a few people. The food in general is okay, but I really enjoyed the sushi bar. The beer was very reasonably priced at $3 a bottle.

Good variety of choices, they also have a "build your own bowl" option which I found pretty awesome. The food was pretty good, but I've had better. The atmosphere is a bit noisy and crowded, but what buffet isn't? Our server was very busy, so we didn't much of her - not that it's her fault. The staff was very friendly. Had some other customers get impatient and rude while I was waiting for my personalized bowl of noodles to be prepared by the cooks (they prepare the bowls in front of you at a griddle station), LOL. Overall, I had a good experience and would return if I'm nearby again.

My wife and I decided to try this place out Sunday night and were pretty pleased. A friend of ours is a big fan and now so are we. Is it the best or most various? For Iowa buffets it is on the higher end. The biggest sell is the grill setup where you choose your noodles, meat, veggies, and sauces and the guys grill it up. Check out their suggested recipes and give them a try. I loved the curry sauces. And the customer service is total Midwestern love. Their waiters are the best! Also, the fried chicken is the best in town. Only people that can fry chicken anywhere near as good as Black people are Asians.

The food I picked for the Mongolian grill was very good. I had pork and shrimp, noodles, veggies, etc. I really enjoyed it. On the buffet they had a wide variety of things. The buffet wasn't as fresh as I would have cared for but it was late in the evening near closing. I'd try it again just earlier in the day

One of my favorite restaurant in Ames. Sushi is as good as other places in Ames but much cheaper. With a fair price, I can easily get seafood, beef, pork and lots of fruit. That's a good supplier of protein I need after workout.

Most horrible Chinese buffet I have ever been. The food and service is not worth me to pay lot tips. If a customer don't give them enough tips, they'll say bad words in Chinese to this customer. Never go that buffet again! (UPDATE: The employee of the buffet now sending me message with bad language because I rate it low. No matter what you say, your service and food are worst in town.)

If you like sea food buffet, this is really a good choice. The price is $14.5 including tip, which is reasonable for student. There are crab, sushi, fish and shrimp. This is a good place for people who want's nutritious low calorie food without paying too much.

Their grill is the best part of this place! We go quite frequently and my husband likes the grill. I prefer the King Salmon and Roast beef. Our son likes the white rice and chicken. We will be going here as often as we can. They just put in new carpet even! Their grill is phenomenal! Please visit this restaurant. Very friendly wait staff and the cook is the owner.

You can actually clean eat at this buffet. Fresh selection of veggies to get them grilled on the wok plus the largest selection ever to create your mongolian bbq w/ sauces galore. King salmon served during dinner. Needs less canned fruits (no canned pineapples), please stop drizzling sugar on the strawberries, serve them natural. Try the habanero hot sauce!

I love Mongolian buffets (especially Genghis Grill, having never been to a Hu Hot) but Mongolian Buffet grossed me out, and I won't eat there again. The veggies were okay. They need spoons to sample sauces before you try them, but since I wasn't able to taste test I played it safe with teriyaki, which wasn't very good. The biggest problem I had with the buffet was the meat, which was all indiscernible in its raw form. Yeah, raw meats tend to look alike, but this all looked like wet, pinkish cardboard. I ended up going with shrimp because I was able to identify it, but it was flavorless. There is also a buffet of generic hot food - fried rice, mashed potatoes, chicken nuggets, etc. I tried a few things and everything was bland and you could tell it had been sitting there for awhile. They also have pre-made sushi rolls, which sit chilling in tubs on ice, but I didn't feel like getting food poisoning on that particular day so I avoided them. There is a Mongolian buffet in Campustown that I'm looking forward to trying, but I won't be returning to Mongolian Buffet.

Second time here...not like the first time. Service was good but there were three kinds of sushi out and they didn't make more while I was there. Other food tasted like it had been out for a while. Will try again but won't go back if not better next time.

This use to be not bad, but there quality has really dropped. If anyone subjects going here I pray that they will change their minds.

The addition of an Mongolian barbecue to Ames is very welcome. It's boggled me for years why Ames hasn't had something to satiate my pangs for build-your-own stir-fry. The Mongolian barbecue here is the main attraction. They have a good selection of ingredients (including some good calamari) and a wide array of sauces and veggies that allow you to assemble your own custom creation. Their easy to use chart over the sauce-veggie bar will allow you to put together some very tasty concoctions with ease. There is a small sushi bar that offers freshly prepared safe-sushis like california rolls and other cooked items in addition to traditional raw nigiri style pieces. The rest of the items are real yawners. A lot of fried stuff. Sam's Club membership standards here: popcorn chicken, corn dogs and petit four. Might be a safe choice for larger outings with picky eaters. For me however the sole attraction is the Mongolian grill. While not on par with some of their other well established Mongolian BBQ chains, it's a much-needed venue in the Ames area and at a reasonable $11.99 for the evening meal.

I ate at Mongolian Buffet for the first time yesterday. Upon arriving, it looked closed, as there was only one other car in the parking lot. I was a little nervous, because I hadn't really heard anything positive about the place, but for some reason the friends I was with wanted to give it a shot. The place it's self was spotless, so kudos for that. There were countless isles of food. Anything you could possibly imagine, and lots of it. This also made me nervous, because, how can a restaurant stay in business if there's all that wasted food. Unfortunately, I suspect that the food I ate was stale and I left feeling nauseous. They should take out the restaurant and put in a night club.

Too bad I can't give it less than a one rating! Way overpriced for the greasy, flavourless food. They had a huge variety of sushi, but it was chewy and all tasted the same.

Well, it's distinctive that it serves instant grill services, and provides fairy good Chinese, or Asian, food. However, I can't say its so good- may be good in condition to eat greasy Asian style food with hunger, but not with normal appetite.

Are you kidding--someone actually rated this grill compared to a Hu Hot? Granted, I think Hu Hots are 3 stars at best, but the only comparison is the large amounts of ingredients that LOOK good, but don't taste all that great. The buffet price is about what you would expect, but we just could NOT find anything that we liked. And we attempted several SMALL bites of the things that looked somewhat worth trying. On arrival we should have just headed back to our hotel (it was later in the evening so some of Ames's better restaurants were closed) The place was dirty....floors and the buffet tables. But the kicker was the food. My girls tried the grill options ( fair )...the sugar coated fried donuts were...fair...the sushi, was fishy...and how hard is it to at least get a California roll right? The fortune cookie was pretty good.

Sometimes, its best to check out the parking lot to see if a place is good. When the lot is full or usually full it says a lot about where people are taking their dining dollars especially during hard.economic times. While some of the.food here nay be the "Sams club" type, it does appeal to most kids. The mongolian grill area has a wider selection of meats than huhot at a better price. The veggies and meats are all very fresh. Add to that a buffet, dessert bar, icecream and salad bar, pretty good. But hey, what about the sushi bar! Great stuff. So for those who tend to write reviews in complaint, when.most people like a place, they show it by repeatedly eating there. Good food at a good price! And family friendly!

Yuck I hate buffets... Nice though that they have a customized mongolian grill type thing and you can design your own stir fry without having to cook it... unfortunately the quality of ingredients seemed

After being a fan of Hu Hot Mongolian Grill in Des Moines, I was patiently waiting for a Mongolian BBQ food to show up in Ames. The billboard went up, and the wait started. After over 2 years, the place is finally open, and move over Hu Hot. The place is freshly opened, been in business only about 3 months, but it's certainly the place to go to satisfy your cooked-to-order asian noodle craving. Like Hu Hot, the traditional mongolian bbq grill is here, large, donut shape hotness. We came for a late lunch, after 1:00pm, so the place was just cooling off, and the parking lot was slowly getting empty, although it was still plenty full. Everything traditional is here - you get a choice of meat (or seafood) including beef, pork, chicken, spicy sausage, shrimp and (surprisingly) squid. Choise of noodles: traditional lo mein, yakisoba and pad thai noodles. Lots of greens to top: potatoes, broccoli, carrots, spinach, onions, cilantro, green onion, peppers, sprouts, etc etc etc. The only thing i didn't see which I am used to seeing at similar establishments was bamboo shoots. And then enter the sauces, everything from the mild to the spicy: Mild Ulan Batar Teriyaki Hoisin Sesame Oil Wine Lemon Juice Honey Sauce Medium Barbecue Ginger Black Thai Hunan Red Curry Yellow Curry Garlic Hot Hot Chili Sesame Oil Szechuan Garlic Chili (there are more, but those are ones I remembered) The idea, just like with other similar restaurants - you make your own sauce, and pour it over your choice and veggies, and it's freshly cooked on the massive donut-shaped grill. Yum! The quality of bbq food was very good. It was hot, well cooked, and tasted well. I usually err on the hot side, and the sauced had enough heat for me, although i did do a mild dish too for a change, and it was excellent. Yakisoba and Pad Thai were great. Didn't try Lo Mein. Squid, shrimp and meats were fresh, and well cut and cooked. The only complaint - the grill didn't seem to have enough staff at the time, and was a bit slower than Hu Hot - but nothing that takes off the experience. Enter the "Buffet" Unlike any other mongolian bbq i have visited, Mongolian buffet also has a traditional buffet section, with mostly "american" dishes. I remember the following: Full salad bar Texas/Garlic Toast Fried Chicken Potatoes Mozzarella Sticks Meat Balls Cheese Balls Onion Rings Tacos Soup Lasagna Chicken Wings Black Beans Sweet and Sour Chicken Mashed potatoes (there were more choices too) I didn't get to try any of those foods, since I mostly came to have mongolian bbq, but the rest of my party tried some of the offerings, and said they were good. What came as a surprise was a sushi station. I like my raw fish, and usually found sushi at buffets to be mediocre at best. To my surprise, fish was fresh and flavorful (probably because a good sushi place is right next door :P). While the fish selection wasn't anything extraordinary (you get your salmon, tuna, snapper, and squid) but certainly was the best fish i tried at a buffet before. Rice was cooked just right, too. Overall, experience was very satisfying, and I am certainly going to be back. Dessert selection was small, but very tasty - coffee roll (very much like rolled tiramisu dough + coffee filling), orange and coconut cakes were nice, and not too hard on the sweetness. The service was great - two high chairs and refills, as well as plate cleanup was exceptional, and very timely. Lunch price is $7.95/per person (drinks included!) and dinner (and all day Sunday) price is $10.95, more than reasonable. If you come as an office/party/hungry crowd - there's something for everyone, whether you like to be adventurous with your sauces or just want to stick to proven american favorites. If you like the beer, the selection was good - plenty of bottles to choose from. ++
