Nice buns! Having this close to home is awesome. We go through bread fast enough that it doesn't have to be hot out of the oven... the savings is worth it.

Starbucks

640 Lincoln Way
Ames, 50010
Reviews:
This is a Starbucks location located INSIDE of a Hy-Vee! The page doesn't show that anywhere, so I want to make sure you know! :) When looking at the front side of the building, the Starbucks is located closer to the right-hand side near the deli area and AWAY from the wine and spirits part of the building. As for the location itself, it's one of my favorites. Unlike a lot of in-store Starbucks locations (like in Target or Hy-Vee), this one isn't actually in its own segregated area. It has a tiny spot that it "has", but it's only a couple feet away from the actual aisles themselves. It gives a really neat feeling to it, but at the same time, it also cuts away from the actual "room" of the store. That means there are only two tables, with two chairs each, in the area, and it can be hard to get a full-sized Hy-Vee cart around here. It doesn't really seem like this location was designed for you to "sit and chat" like most Starbucks. That being said, this is still one of my favorites. I love being able to stop into Hy-Vee, get groceries, and have my Starbucks ready to go. When lines are short in Hy-Vee and I only have a few items to buy, I'll even come order my drink here, go check out, and they'll have my drink ready for me when I'm done checking out. There usually isn't much of a wait to get your drink, but usually there are only two people working, so if there's a random rush of people for some reason, they can get a bit backlogged. I've never had much of an issue, though. I came around here often enough that the staff actually remembered my name and my drink. Most of the staff has moved on from then, but they still will give me a smile and a wave if I walk by. My drink is always very similar - even if different baristas make it. At other locations, I usually have a bit of variance in the taste, but I can always expect it to taste correctly and to be made well when I shop here. I don't think I've ever had an issue with the taste of my drink here, and I've ordered here hundreds of times. (It might have hit the thousands, honestly, over the last five years?) As a random note, this location seems to have a wider range of teas than some of the other locations in Ames. This location used to have a lot of rewards programs including one that worked with the Fuel Saver card or a punch card. Both rewards programs have been ceased. I'm really sad as it was part of what made this location so much fun to go to. Notes: You could potentially use the Hy-Vee deli area seating as seating for chilling and lounging though I'm unsure how orthodox that would be. Hy-Vee has bike parking outside. Hy-vee also has outdoor benches and tables that are out year-round that are rarely busy, so you could definitely use that as a lounging area to talk with someone while drinking your coffee. Final thoughts: I love this location. It's always clean, and while it doesn't have much room to chill or lounge, the employees have always been super friendly, and I love that I can count on them to get my drink right every time. Not only that, but it's great to pick up my coffee after my shopping. I'm sad they don't have the rewards programs anymore, but it's still a great location.

One of the best kept secrets of Ames. The coffee is, in one word, perfection. My friend purchased a black and white mocha, which is blackberry and white chocolate flavors incorporated into one drink. This is where I go for my daily cup of joe.
Coffee=Chocolate. Records=Peanut butter. This place is the best Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ever.
The Cafe Mocha and breakfast burrito really hit the spot! They have pretty reasonably priced records too.

Amazing everything. Slow pour is the way to go, and these smooth and delightful brews deserve it! Bought a small bag of beans (great idea!) for a gift. Had the lemon blueberry scone and wish I could have tried all the treats; they looked so yummy! Pleased with my purchase and will visit again next time I'm in town.
This place is the real deal for coffee and pastries in Ames. The owner really knows her coffee, the staff is helpful, and the coffee is brewed fresh every time. It takes a minute or two to get your coffee, but it is well worth it. Also, the shop is pretty small, but cozy nonetheless. I recommend this place for sure!
They have excellent croissants, certainly the best I've had in Iowa and a big step up from the (surprisingly good) ones you can get in the frozen aisle at Trader Joe's and Walmart. My iced coffee was very good too.

Downtown Deli

Great fresh ingredients. Awesome staff. Lines can get long during peak lunch times. Otherwise it's tough to beat the quality and taste.
The oldest and best deli in town. Located on Main St. In downtown Ames, park in back for free. Great meal and unique atmosphere. They have home-made soup and other goodies most days. A favorite of Ames locals and always busy during lunch. Under the same ownership for 32 years. Claude has out lasted all the chain sub shops that popped up downtown only to be run our of business by the Downtown Deli. Come see why. They just remodeled the building's front facade and it really looks nice! Stop by
The tuna on wheat I had today was far better than most subs I've had in a long time. The fresh onions, tomato, and lettuce plus cheddar cheese and oil and vinegar made it even better. Service was awesome, and we got several great suggestions. The potato soup was good, not amazing but nice and hot. A 7 inch sub is more than enough unless you have a large appetite! Only 4 stars because the inside of this place made me feel a bit claustrophobic! Several tables close together, and a large part of the interior is used for the sandwich station and line for people to order and pay.

I don't write reviews a lot. But I had to after having this mushroom and beef burger.. absolutely amazing. Loved the crunch in their patty and their taste is superb. No more McDonald's or any other fast food
Excellent hot food and fast service. Love the flavor of the day frozen custard and turtle sundae. Can't wait to move back to Iowa from Oklahoma so I can get some Culver's. Would recommend to friends.
There's free wi-fi, 10% student discounts, and OH MY GOD THE BURGERS ARE GOOEY CHEESY DELICIOUSNESS!!!!! My favorite for dessert is the concrete mixer. You get to choose your own base and flavors. I get a vanilla base and Oreo and Snickers. Heaven!!!! My wife gets Snickers and mint. We love the Deluxe Butterburgers. It's a great place for college students to crack open the books, laptops, and munch on fries or burgers while studying. They are super friendly, give customer service, and their food is high quality comfort food. It ain't chubbin' up - it's a belly full of love.

I love Mr. Burrito. I lived in Ames two years ago and am about to move back, this time for good. I am so happy to see Mr. Burrito is still in his location on Lincoln way making excellent burritos. I hope he has success for a long time. The owner of Mr. Burrito is a very nice, funny guy who really loves his food and values his customers. Back when I lived on Hayward I was a regular. He remembers your order and preferences and makes great suggestions. I love his barbacoa, chorizo, carnitas, etc. The meat is always fresh and flavorful. The hot sauces are also fantastic! I'm partial to the chipotle sauce but my husband likes the habanero. Other menu items are great as well and his tortillas are always fresh and soft. A refrigerator in the shop has Mexican sodas, a perfect complement to the authentic food. Seating is limited as it's a small shop but you'll always feel like you're dining with family at Mr. Burrito's. Hands down the best burrito spot in Ames.
Al pastor is the only meat I order here as it is out of this world. Order tacos on corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. The tamales are also excellent.
I LOVE Mr. Burrito! It's the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had in Ames. Their burritos are just like the ones I had back home in Los Angeles and their tamales are pretty yummy as well. I can't wait to have more soon!

This is one of my favorite places to drink and be merry. If you are a fan of soccer, this is the best place in town to have a few beers and watch a match. Personally, this is why my husband and I enjoy this place. The atmosphere is relax and the staff are nice. I highly suggest the garlic spaghetti. It's my favorite!
Amazing food, comfortable atmosphere, I love it! A little pricey, but worth it.
Who would have thought that Ames, Iowa would be home to an amazing BRASILIAN restaurant?! I was pleasantly surprised! Come on folks, I live in SJ, where can I find good Brasilian places? Anyway, everything is Brasilian decked out, you have your soccer playing on a tv, you can get your guarana, and the food is pretty tasty. I was hoping for more of a meat selection seeing as we were in Iowa! However, I can not complain. Great food, people, service, and hot guys!

Fazoli’s

Very good service food was piping hot and fresh. Hearty portions as well. No complaints here. Yummy
Fresh - Fast - Italian. And it's one of the few places left standing at or near the North Grand Mall in Ames. The first Fazoli's opened in 1988 in Lexington, KY and is part of a national chain of which this branch is the only one I've ever encountered. I have only ordered lunch here via their convenient drive-through. You can also sit inside and the selection of pasta, pizza, submarines, salads, and bread sticks is actually fairly impressive. There are also Family Meal, Kid's Meal, and Sweet Treats available and the cost would even please an Iowa budget. The quantity that I received and how it all tastes were also better than I would expect for fast food of whatever ethnicity.
I've always thought that in rating a restaurant you should rate it against what it aspires to be. So, since Fazoli's does not aspire to sell gourmet Italian food, I did not rate it on that basis; hence, the four stars in this review should not be read to suggest that you will get outstanding Italian cuisine here. However, for what it is, Fazoli's is quite good. "What it is", of course, is a family-friendly place that is one step up from fast food. It is not terribly cheap, at least by fast food standards; spaghetti and meat sauce, for example, costs five and a half dollars, and if you want a meatball on that you'll have to pay an extra dollar and a half. Lunch here can quite easily set you back eight or nine dollars by the time you factor in the cost of a drink and tax, which is probably more than one would expect to pay at a Burger King or McD's. However, the food is considerably better than at either of these places, and a special attraction, at least for me, is the unlimited breadsticks that are available when you dine in; these are usually excellent, particularly when you get a batch that's "slimy" with garlicky butter on them. The menu changes fairly often, and there is a good selection of pizza (which is not too bad, and has kind of an interesting taste to it), pasta, chicken dinners, sandwiches (including new "melts" that I have unfortunately not had a chance to sample yet) and salads. The service here at the Ames branch of Fazoli's never fails to impress me: the people are always cheerful and friendly, and during my most recent meal here, a few days ago, no less than three different people came by to ask me whether everything was OK and whether I wanted more breadsticks. If you feel like something Italian and don't want to go to the trouble and expense of a fancy meal, give this a try.
