This place is great. I'm not going to lie my wife and I didn't want to give this place a chance but to our surprise it has become a go to spot. If your driving by it looks like your average restaurant/ bar. More bar then anything. When you get inside it's pretty dark but I'd imagine that a pub is suppose to be that way. The drinks are priced right and they have the Blonde Guiness which is one my favorite new beers. If not they Harp on tap which is also great. Happy hr is from 3 to 6(just an FYI). The food might not look pretty but the flavor is there. I'm not a lamb fan but the Lamb Stew is a must. I'd also recommend the Rueben. I got fish and chips recently and it didn't disappoint (I was a little sad that I only got 2 pieces but you can order more for a1.50 each). Save room for dessert and get the bread pudding. Overall awesome spot and it won't break the bank.

Great food and extraordinary service. What a great Irish ambiance. Even many of their hosts and servers looked Irish! We had a blast with some authentic Irish food and beer. Try the shepherd's pie!

First off, I love this place. From the decor, to the waitstaff and especially the music, I just love this place. The food is good, and there are so many different options to chose from! I've been there 3-4 times in the last couple weeks and I still can't wait to go back to try something different. My favorite dish so far has been the Shepherds Pie. It was very peppery, which I personally love. Also, they brew their own root beer and it is delicious. I ordered the bread pudding for dessert one time and it was a meal in itself. I'm not usually a fan of bread pudding, but this has changed my mind on it.

Food = 4 stars Service = 2 stars First, I'll address the food. Dublin Bay makes excellent bread pudding, so save room for dessert. Main courses I've had there have been good as well, but the bread pudding really shines. As other reviews have noted, the black & tan onion rings and boxties are good. I liked the Guinness beef boxty, although the portion size is pretty small. I ordered the brussel sprouts as my side and was unimpressed. The sprouts are advertised as brussel sprouts with bacon, but there was no bacon in my side dish. Instead, there were big pieces of onion. On top of that, the sprouts were very bitter and under seasoned. For me, they're a pass. Now, service. Dublin Bay offers drink specials during the week. On Tuesdays, the special is $1 off bottles. Everyone in my group was keen to order a bottled beverage, however, the two servers we had were unable to recommend any bottled beers. A dining companion asked the server to recommend an IPA and the server responded "I hate IPAs." The friend then asked her what was popular and the server didn't know. I asked how a particular beer was and the server responded that she didn't know, but it's an IPA. However, the beer menu clearly listed it as a pilsner. So either the server really doesn't know anything about beer or the menu is wrong. Frustrated by the servers inability to recommend any bottled beverages, I simply read off a name that sounded interesting. It was the only IPA on the menu below 10% ABV and not listed as a double/imperial. A few minutes later, a friend asked me what I ordered (since she was also flustered by the servers' lack of help) and when I replied the friend said "You realize that's $23, right?" I had no idea I had ordered a 750ml, $23 bottle of beer. I quickly grabbed the server and asked her to cancel my order, but it was too late. Shame on me for not reading the menu clearly, but I feel the server should have warned me. The dining partner and I ended up sharing that expensive bottle of beer, but I did notice that the beer's description in the menu did not match the bottle. The ABV was higher than the menu noted and the bottle indicated the beverage was a double, while the menu did not. In closing, eat the food, don't order a drink you aren't familiar with. Also, the menus should be updated for accuracy.

I lived in Ames for over four years about a decade ago and never tried Dublin Bay. We happened to be in town and I was looking for somewhere to eat that isn't a tourist trap (cough cough Hickory Park), so Dublin Bay it was. This is a really cool Irish restaurant/pub located just off of Duff Ave on the south side of town. The inside area really captures the Irish pub feeling. My wife and I sat at a high top in the bar area for drinks and dinner. Like I said, the bar just has a great pub feeling, and there are a few TVs in the area to look at if you are looking for some sports to watch. They had a very good selection of beers both on tap and in bottle. And not just Irish/English varieties either. They had a boatload of American craft beer to choose from including some rarer beers you wouldn't typically find at a normal bar. We started off with an order of the onion rings which were thick cut and hand battered. A great selection to start out with. I ordered the lamb stew and it was very good. On this particular day in late May it was unseasonably cold and the thick hot stew really hit the spot and it was at a good price. My wife ordered the fish and chips and was satisfied with her selection. Looking back now I really regret not trying this place all those years ago. This is a very good spot for the town of Ames and I would hit it up again if I was back in town.

It's amazing that this place could be considered a "hidden gem" of Ames, but it really is easy to miss. Nestled off South 16th in an unassuming building lies what might be the best overall restaurant in all of Ames. That's bold speak in any college town filled with great eateries, but Dublin Bay has the chops to back it up. I've never been to the Republic of Ireland, but I can't help but feel like I'm there as I walk into Dublin Bay. The bright red doors are opened with heavy iron rings. As you walk in, the lighting is soft, warm, and cozy. The decor feels authentic, never cheesy, and really helps you forget you're in the middle of central Iowa. I love everything about the ambiance. All of this would be moot if the beverage options were poor. Yes, a true Irish pub is all about the food, but drinks are important, too. Not to worry. Dublin Bay has a fully stocked bar, and a fantastic beer and cider selection. I was impressed to see all of the major Ames / Des Moines microbrews represented, as well as the usual suspects like Guiness, Harp, Strongbow and so on. And the food? Wow. Almost everything on the menu is great. There's plenty of American standards with a little Irish riff on them -- the Guiness battered onion rings are the stuff dreams are made of. There are also completely Irish dishes like the Shepard's Pie, Boxties, soda bread, and more. If you want one piece of advice. get a salad and get the house dressing. It's a garlic parmesan and it'll blow your mind. Truly, one of the hidden gems of Ames, if there ever was such a thing.

My wife and I enjoy the food here because the menu is different than the average bar and grill. Their Irish fare is great! The bar area has a couple booths and tables, but the best part is the bar itself: a beautiful wood bar where you can catch up with friends.

Don't order the nutty walleye unless you like getting treated like an a$$hole for complaining about undercooked rice!! Worst $20 I've ever spent!!

If I could use swear words in a review, this would be the review that I'd use them in. I am just that excited. The food here was amazing. The chicken and pear with rice pilaf is divine. It came with green beans but I substituted a salad with oil and vinegar. They had balsamic vinegar instead of red wine and this made me happy for a change. The salad came on the same plate as the chicken and rice, and at first made me nervous to mix all these sauces and flavors. I was wrong. The balsamic if anything made it even more delicious mixed with some of the rice. My boyfriend got the Guinness boxty if I'm correct, and that was like sloppy joe meat, pancakes, potatoes, and a chicken pot pie had a baby and it was the tastiest baby in the entire universe. On the side, mashed potatoes that were so creamy and lovely. The soda bread was fantastic and I wish I'd gotten my own piece, maybe next time. I had one glass of beer before the meal, and I don't know if it was that or the food but when we left I felt like I was floating on air and at the same time in this haze of tasty warm feelings. Service was A+ as well, our waitress gave us great advice when we weren't sure what to choose. Literally, the best meal I've had since I've been in Iowa, possibly even best meal in the past year.

great food fair prices on food nice bar kinda pricey drinks the waitress was kinda snobby but over all the food is great the steak sandwich, nutty walleye and even the salmon is bomb over all i really enjoyed this place,

Authentic?? Oh please. No. This is Ames, Iowa. I pity the fool who comes here expecting real Irish food. But. BUT!! It is good solid food and a heck of a lot better than the nearby chains (applebee's, red lobster, etc. less than a block away), with a better selection of beers on tap. The potato soup is pretty great and I almost always order it. The Irish soda bread isn't bad, considering this is more of a tribute to Irish restaurants than the real thing, and there is a good selection of well-priced appetizers and sandwiches, including a pretty darned good reuben. You could do a lot worse on South Duff than a visit to Dublin Bay. Good atmosphere and decent food - plus, I appreciate the way the restaurant is divided into lots of smaller nooks and crannies so you don't feel like you're just one misplaced elbow jab away from a billion other tables.

I have been a big fan to DB since it opened. Donnie and crew do an outstanding job and this is a great place to start and or finish an event at Iowa State Center. And if you can make it to their St. Patrick's party then you are in for a treat.

Been away from Ames for nearly a year and was excited to be back in town and have dinner here. The food is still the best. There is no better soup in Ames and of course, the black and tan onion rings are winners. But....the service ievel has dropped. When we arrived there were 3 waitresses hanging out at the hostess stand. We had to ask our waitress about the soup of the day, the specials and had to ask for refills. Their service was the best in Ames. Now, it is no different from any other place. Food is outstanding! And hopes that the service standards returns.

I Love, Love DB, did I say I love it? Well I do. I love the food, most of the time I seem to hit it when it is very good. I have hit a day or 2 when they have been off. The lighting does suck. You would think they would read reviews and do something about it. The owners and wait staff are great, and they put up with my family's humor which is a good thing.

One of the better choices in Ames! Locally owned and a great bar area, good selection of beers and some Irish dishes add to the variety of the menu. Love the atmosphere- the restaurant is a bit dark, but divided up so you never feel on top of other diners. Service can be a bit tad- to very slow, be prepared to wait or go flag someone down. Never usually a wait to get in, but the wait is after you've got your food to getting a check etc. And the food- soups are good, chips with baked bean like dip good, I had a mahi mahi sandwich with asparagas and the portion size was good- enough to eat but not so much I was overwhelmed. Nice selection of salads, like the mixed greens, with candied walnuts, blueberries and a fruit vinegrette dressing. Never even got a chance to try the bread pudding dessert so I will be back- Love the atmosphere- a welcome spot in Ames !

Absolutely great food. Just as good if not better than when I worked there 5 years ago in college. Very fair pricing, good selection of beers, and fantastic atmosphere. The patio has to be one of the biggest in town. I will always be a 'regular' here...you should be, too.

I traveled to Ames for work and was blessed to find this place. The Manager is very knowledgeable about beer (had a great selection) and the food was really good. I'll be back to this place next time I'm in town.

Very good food especially for Ames. Minus one star for non-attentative service and strange morbidly dark interior. Prices are okay though portions wont have you leaving feeling overstuffed.

  • Stacy S.

For real Irish food, this place is not the best. I have had a few of the "Irish Fare" (Lamb's stew, corned beef and cabbage, boxty) and all have been average. The flavors are decent, but not worth the price tag. I much prefer ordering their sandwiches that have an American spin on them. Don't go here if you want authentic. I would actually just go for something that includes fries... The only reason to come to Dublin Bay is for the atmosphere and the beer selection. The prices are too high for food and beer, but if you catch it during happy hour, the apps are awesome and worth it. The beer is served at the optimum temp and the Guiness is poured correctly most days. The food is good, but nothing to rave about. I only go here when my wife nags me, so I am not a fan.

  • doug r.

okay, it looks like it used to be a japanese restaurant, and identifiably irish fare fills maybe half the menu. but the interior decor is reasonably convincing, and the food seems good. i stopped for lunch on friday, and had no problems getting a table or with the speed of service. the bangers and mash were excellent, and generously portioned, and i liked the soda bread particularly. my wife had the corned beef boxty, which was delicious, and made me wish i'd ordered that instead. next time.

Yum yum yum! This is a favorite place to dine out for my husband and I. Unfortunately we often forget to include it in our list of options since it is in an off the beaten path location. We ate here on Saturday night and it was as great as every other time I have ever been here. Their spinach artichoke dip is delicious, the Shepard's pie is a favorite and their baked potato soup is a must!

Yes - this is not somewhere you want to go if you're a vegetarian. Before I switched to a pescetarian diet, I had the Corned Beef Boxty, which was amazingly delicious. We also had the Smoked Salmon Pizza appetizer, and I came away feeling more full than I had been in years. But since changing my diet, I'm not quite so excited about this place anymore. I love the decor, and especially the cute little fountain/pond right inside the entrance. Great food though, I definitely recommend it.

I've been here twice now and both times were pretty good. I like the dimmer lighting but the first time it seemed a bit too dark. On my most recent visit I had the Fish & Chips and onion rings, both of which were excellent. Service was pretty good, a little slow last time but they were busy. Not in my top rotation of places to eat but it's a good place to go to switch it up.

I wouldn't know how authentic this place is, but I do know the food is good. I've had several dishes, and I really enjoy the shepherd's pie. The seating is nice, if a bit dark, but it is a pub after all. The dessert are excellent.

  • Doug P.

This place has gone downhill over the last few years. The same owners as a few other restaurants in town continue to sell american bar fare as though it were authentic Irish fare. It's laughable.

Dublin Bay is a great place to visit while in Ames! The have fantastic spinach and artichoke dip. My favorite entrees were the fish & chips and the corned beef boxty- a potato pancake with corned beef and gorgonzola cream sauce... YUM! The atmosphere is great and the decor is very cute!

Good service. Good food. Good value. The three of us had shepherds pie, reuben sandwich with potato soup and hamburger with salad. All were very good. One of us had a small beer. It was a bitter beer which he didn't realize it would be. Next time we will request a sample before spending $6.0 on a small beer. Definitely plan to go back again.

Once again thank you Yelp. I use it to find tonight's dinner and it did not disappoint. Neither did this restaurant. Good beer selection. I started with a Stone's Double Bastard and then went with a Bell's Two Hearted. For starters I had their cheese balls. Cheddar cheese with green onions made into a ball and fried. Then I went with the pork tenderloin sandwich changed up per the bartenders request. With cheddar jalapeños spicy mayo and bacon. Great service and good food. Worth a stop.

Look no further for some good Irish pub food. They even have Bulmers (Magners) on tap. I went to Ireland for four weeks one summer, and this is the most authentic Irish food I've found in Iowa. If you aren't feeling up to Irish food, they do have regular food as well. Their kitchens are also open pretty late if you are grabbing a bite to eat after normal supper hours.

  • Mark H.

Food is just plain good. It could use a good cleaning and a waitress was very rude to me when I miss pronounced a drink... If you are trying this place out, I would go with one of the sandwiches. This place is a lot of fun most of the time!

We are from Chicago took wife and 2 daughters here, salads were disappointing, the dressing they got was balsamic it was made with malt vinegar very bitter. I'm a big fan of the Ruben sandwiches, super bland and just ok.

The very best place in Ames to dine. Wonderfully large menu and a great selection of unique beers and drafts. I've been here several times and can't wait to return the next time I'm in Ames. My favorite dish is the salmon with wild rice and brussel sprouts. The potato soup is delicious and goes great with a salad and the house garlic dressing. Very reasonably priced and you definitely get more than your money's worth. Service is very fast too! I 100% recommend Dublin Bay!

LOVE this place. Will come back every single time I am in Ames. Why? 1. The bartenders--friendly, efficient. Friendly. 2. They have nice wine--which most beer places don't. Most beer bars have awful--awful--wine. And I don't drink beer anymore..:( so a nice glass of vino is appreciated. 3. Great TV's. 4 Great service on Saturday prior to Iowa/ISU game. 5. Great recommendations on parking for the game--thanks guys! 6. And, the mac n cheese was AWESOME. I mean it--you have to have that if you go there. They said it was a new addition, I could have eaten it twice a day.

I love finding places like this when I'm traveling. I like it even better when they are extremely close to my hotel so I can have some drinks. Outside, the joint looks like a dark green cottage and has lovely plants and other landscaping that just set the mood of an Irish home in the country. Then when I walked in I experienced my favorite Irish pub atmosphere: low-ceilinged and dark, and weathered wood everywhere. My server was really friendly and the receipt said her name is Lauren. She took really good care of her tables and apologized because the bar got kind of backed up. They were pretty busy for a Tuesday night. I started with the Black and Tan onion rings, which were extremely good beer battered rings. The breading was crisp and delicious, but very greasy. All night, even after washing my hands a few times, I just felt greasy. The dipping sauce was chipotle ranch I believe and was tasty as well. They had some Fox Barrel pear cider, which I love & don't see all that often so that was a nice surprise. Then I had the shepherd's pie and I tell ya....it was the perfect way to end a long, tiring, gloomy, rainy day. The meat and vegetables were cooked in a rich, Guinness gravy that was seasoned perfectly, and the mashed potatoes on top were nice and thin and browned just right. I liked the thinner topping. Some places really mound that stuff up and you can't taste anything 'cept tater. When that happens, drink more Guinness. There were just a couple of things, if I had to nit pick. When I walked in, the owner/manager-type said, "Just you?" Then he went to check on a table. Then the hostess came up front and said, "Just you?" After she seated me, the server said, "Just you?" I travel by myself and dine alone a lot, so I'm used to it, but stop saying it already! I wanted to say, "Me and my corporate card, so hook a road warrior up please!!!" Also, the owner/manager-type was all over the place helping out, but I never really saw him interact with people. That's always a nice touch when they ask how things are. Maybe if he knows ya. Now, if I'm back in the Ames area I'm going to have a hard time choosing between Dublin Bay and Hickory Park. Both have great food. I might lean towards the pub because there were less screaming crumbsnatchers, and Hickory Park is riddled with those sticky-fingered beggars.

  • Nicholas T.

Huge menu, large restaurant, and good service. Never a wait to get a table. The quality of the food was slightly above your standard bar fare, and for Ames, it's good. The burger was good, and much better when compared to the fish and chips which were small and bland. A final note would be for the servers to learn more about Irish cuisine and drinks. When asking about the spirits, the waitress just gave a blank look and said she had no idea, and when walking up to the bar the bartender was equally clueless. If you're going to be an Irish bar, good grief, learn about Whiskey.

  • Lenny J.

How many times to you see Shepherds pie on the menu? I've seen it on diner menus but not many other places. It's kind of like meatloaf in that regard. Who goes out to eat meatloaf or shepherds pie? If you are in Ames, you should and here is the place. This is not a slice from a premade tray. What you get is your own soup bowl packed with goodness. The Potatoes on top have a slight crunch to them brought on by the baking process. Below this layer you get into a peppery blend of veggies and meat that is just wonderful. I found myself slowing down to savor the flavors and then speeding up because it was so tasty. Two of us had the shepherds pie this night and were equally impressed. This will certainly be on the repeat list.

This restaurant is a go-to for me and my friends and visiting family, and I have eaten here many times and left satisfied each time. The atmosphere is excellent and very welcoming, and the service is great. The menu selection offers high-end dinners (delicious and worth the money) as well as Irish dishes, which are very affordable and very good. The portions sizes are very large and I often come home with left overs. This restaurant is one of the first places that comes to my mind when recommending places to eat to new friends.

Dublin Bay is owned by the same group that owns Wallaby's, but it seems that it has not fallen into the same low-quality rut that Wallaby's seems to be in right now. I like Dublin Bay, and not just because I enjoy Irish whiskey (which I definitely do). The restaurant has a great atmosphere with a neat bar area and a main dining area that's broken off into little nooks. It's quaint and cozy, and you get the feel of being in an Irish pub. The food is consistently good - a mix of Irish fare like shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and boxty, along with American salads and sandwiches. I've never had a bad meal there, nor have I ever had bad service. It's a great place to go with friends or even just to have a cocktail or beer at the bar.

Quick seating and service, pleasant waitstaff. Lots of authentic dishes on the menu, and definitely great Irish pi\ub decor. I had the Crabcake BLT, which was really good. I was a teeny bit annoyed that there was slightly more ciabatta than cake, but I did love that the cake was more crab than breadcrumb.

It's just plain consistent. The food is always good. They have a decent beer selection (glad to see they added some Stone Brewing choices). I really enjoy the atmosphere, the way it is laid out. It's a really big place, but they have the dining area divided out into many smaller areas. I don't feel like I'm in a cafeteria like Hickory Park. Rock solid.

Dublin Bay has the best service and food in Ames. I eat their almost every week and wouldn't do so if service and food were not the best. Did not used to care much for soup, but everyday they have a different one and I have yet to find one that wasn't excellent and not to forget they have the best tap beer choices.

An Irish restaurant clad in Japanese architecture. Fascinating. If you're in the mood for the type of fare you'll find at Red Robin or Chili's but find yourself in Ames, Iowa this is where I would recommend you stop. This is in my opinion one of the best places you can stop for a burger and a beer. I come here for one reason: the boxty. Corned beef wrapped in potato pancake with a gorgonzola sauce. I love it, and I think it's the best item they sling at Dublin Bay. In agreement with the previous reviewers here that have pointed out the lighting situation it is unusually dark in here. I'm not sure if they're trying to make it seem like an antiquated irish shack or what, but in addition to being one of Ames' better restaurants it's one of the darkest.

Good beer selection. Not terrible wait times. Attractive bartenders. Food--mehhhh. Waitress- Great! Very nice and put up with the dry humor of my family I ordered the bangers and mash and was disappointed when it came out that 1) there was no delightful onion gravy as promised and 2) I did not get my irish soda bread. I suppose my dish got whisked away before the last step of the prep stage was finished none the less-I was a tad disappointed. What I did eat was good, nothing mind blowing or life changing.

Our meal was fantastic, super fast service right at noon, and we had two kids under 2 so they put us in a convenient location out of the way and brought crayons. Ahi tuna cooked perfectly and the hubs had amazing fish and chips. Loved the atmosphere too. Normally I can't stand any of the restaurants in Ames, but this had superb service, food, and atmosphere. Even the Guinness tastes better here. Because of this we are totally going back!!

Good place for a whiskey and corned beef. Typically a good beer selection.

  • Allen M.

Had the cheese fries, which were ordinary, and a green salad which was surprisingly good. The main entree was the Shepherd's Pie which did not exactly disappoint, but the promised 'farm fresh vegetables' were hors de combat, I fear... Tasty nevertheless, and the potato topping was well executed. It is really dark in there. Like a crofter's cottage on the Old Sod, before electricity came in. Also, what's with the AARP Rock Music selection? If I know all the tunes, that's not a good thing. The Black and Tan and the plain Guinness were the high points. NB: Service was flawless and friendly.
