A difficult review, but it was not a great first experience. A group of coworkers went for drinks and appetizers. Decent beer options, and the wings we had were actually really good. Unfortunately, we had bad service in two ways. It's a sports bar, and it's safe to assume people will ask about the beer. Our waitress was not 21, and therefore could not describe the beers (is it a stout, an IPA, a porter, etc). I wasn't really asking about a personal experience, but I don't think it is too much to ask that the waiter/waitress know what type of beers they have, even if they have never drank one. What really ruined the experience was that we were constantly asked if we needed something (not in a "Can I re-fill your glass of water" way, but more in a, "I am clocking out soon" way which turned out to be the case). It was not the type of experience that makes me want to go back, and with other options near-by, probably will not.

I hated Brewers. It was the worst. Now someone has bought it and turned it into a sports bar of sorts, and it's awesome. First of all, they have beer on tap! (Brewers didn't.) Secondly, they have food! (Brewers listed peanuts as a menu option.) I'll stop making comparisons now. The food is good - really good. The menu is solid but not overwhelming with options. I had a crispy chicken sandwich, and my boyfriend had a Farmer Brown burger topped with egg, ham, and hash browns. Both were terrific. The fries were good. The service was great. We were there at lunch and it wasn't busy, but I have no reason to expect that it wouldn't be that good all the time. Well done, Brick City Grill, and welcome to Ames.

Nice place to come before or to watch a game. Place is not that big and gets real busy with no real waiting area. Came for the burger and it is good. Best in the state...not quite. Decent service even when busy. Love this neighborhood too, and close to the campus.

Awesome pretzel burger & atmosphere, way better than the boring places we have in New Mexico. Great service as well, that doesn't exist in NM!

Side salad was a plate of iceberg lettuce with 2 pieces of onion. Come on! Traditional wings were over cooked and dry. Kids meals with chicken strips and fries. Both kids liked them. Hamburger was over cooked and dry. Best in Iowa? No chance.

Apparently "we close at 2" means "when we don't feel like taking names anymore". We got there at 1pm and were turned away. You guys can still prep while people finish eating in the dining room. Now, the next time I want a burger, I will find somewhere else to go for a little while.

Have had the smoked pork chop twice now, both times it was excellent. Tried the 60/40 burger and the BBQ brisket sandwich, both were very good. Had Totchos as an appetizer, they were outstanding. Good service. Clean tables. I would recommend this place for everyone, young and old.

Brick City Grill is a fun place to watch a game or go to after an ISU game. We got the chicken strips and the Cy Fries out last visit. The fries come with a cheese sauce that is very tasty. Chicken strips are also pretty good, heard the burgers are also good here, will have to try the next time back. The restaurant had plenty of tv's to catch any game and the staff is very friendly.

The Brick City Grill *could* be a cool, fun place on a great side of town. Instead it has chosen to go straight down the middle of the road. I bet 90 percent of those reading this review can predict the menu. No big surprises, full of high-fat old school American food. Come on Brick City, do something innovative and don't cover it with cheese and gravy!

Great burgers! With so many gourmet burger joints popping up around the country, I was skeptical. Yes, I know they won some big award, but... Happily, I feel rewarded for giving Brick a try, Our server was great, giving us some good suggestions regarding the menu. Taking her advice, we all opted for pretzel buns. A great choice. The core of the burger, the Angus patty, was juicy and flavorful. The selection of sides, ranging from French fries to full salads, was a pleasant surprise. The hamburgers were a little smaller than we expected, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I not a fan of insanely oversized portions. It's only a case of gourmet burger overload that keeps me from awarding five stars. I've also sensed a bit of a foodie backlash directed at Brick for winning the state burger award, which really isn't fair either. Plenty of televisions for sports enthusiasts. The staff is also receptive to channel suggestions.

Gayle and I recently took my Parents out for Dinner here. We were "early birds" as we arrived at 5:30 PM, which turned out to be a good thing as this place filled up pretty quickly. Brick City Grill is a nice neighborhood place, with an "everyday is game day" family vibe. My Son was the big eater here, whose choices included cheese balls as an appetizer, a big burger, and then dessert. At the end, he clearly stated that this was a 5 Star experience for him both in terms of food and service. My Monday Night Special choice (BBQ Pork Ribeye with a salad) was perhaps less than the Kid's "Oh Wow" experience, but the sandwich was tasty and our waitress was at the top of her game. I've already forgotten what Gayle, Mom, and Dad ordered, but definitely remembered good food, great conversation, gratitude, and a touch of sadness that we were heading back to California the next day. We're make sure to swing back the next time we're in town.

Meh. Service was excellent, attentive without being overbearing. Cheese balls were okay. Blue cheese burger and 60/40 burger were unimpressive. Also the presentation of the blue cheese burger was completely unappealing. Fries tasted like frozen that they tossed in the oven with little if no seasoning. Way over priced for the lackluster burgers. Water was good.

Great burgers! Don't forget the tater tots on the side! The wait is usually long, as it is a very small building, and the service is nothing to write home about, but it is worth it once you get your mouthwatering, juicy, tender burger.

I'm not typically a fan of the sports bar environment, but I find the atmosphere here great. It's small and quaint, providing more of a family environment. The beer selection is great, a full bar with several taps and a lot of different options, including some locals. The food was good. Veggies can substitute any burger for a black bean patty, though you will find your options are limited if you're anything like me and don't see the value in still paying 12 dollars to hold the bacon... The best part about this place is that you get a free meal for your birthday, so plan your celebration accordingly!

This is one of my favorite go-to dinner spots in Ames. I love the vibe and decor - I always try to get in the booth with Fred Hoiberg's pic The burgers are great and never disappoint; the bacon guacamole burger is my fav! Also helps that the staff is always incredibly kind and attentive. A great option when in Cyclone Country!

We were greeted and seated promptly. All of our drinks and food orders were handled with kindness and courtesy. My chicken was quick delicious. It is a casual atmosphere with friendly employees. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Awesome! Our server was nice, and the atmosphere was chill. A little bit bright in there, which wasn't what I expected, but it wasn't a bad thing. It wasn't super loud, and the music wasn't blaring in my ears. Our food was AWESOME. I totally get why this place got the Best Burger in Iowa award, because it was seriously delicious. 5/5 would eat here again, and plan to.

Brick City Grill On a cold winter's night with flurries blowing in the wind, I walked into Brick City Grill. Met with the sights and sounds of a typical college town bar and grill, I took a seat at the bar as there were few other seats to be had. A very good sign on hump day with lots of other eateries for people to choose from. For a starter, I chose the fried Wisconsin cheese balls, recommended by the bartender. These perfectly fried dairy delights were served with a dipping sauce that tasted equal parts ranch and tarter sauce. It actually worked - and worked quite well. The main event was the Brick City Double. Two patties, 4 slices of American cheese and 4 bacon strips with the burger topping in at 14 ounces - What's not to like? To up the awesomeness quotient, I substituted one of the patties for a 60/40 patty: 60% beef and 40% ground bacon. Wise decision or a fool's choice? I was about to find out. I am not a burger cutter. I usually heft it up in my two mitts and insert it into the lower third of my face. Tonight was different for two reasons: 1) It was too darn hot to try to consume without cutting and 2) I was curious to see if a 60/40 patty looked different from its all-beef counterpart (it did not). After bisecting the 14 ounce beast, I took a bite, then another and then another. My taste buds were desperately searching for something unique and extra bacony. I'm not quite sure what I expected, but I didn't find it. Was it a good burger? Indeed - very good! Was it the pork-lined path to culinary Mecca? Alas, no. Maybe it was the non-bacon patty in was sharing a bun with. I just don't know. But the crinkle cut fries? Amazing. While my expectations weren't met, I left deeply satisfied. Tonight I was in the mood for a hearty burger with crispy fries and a tasty appetizer. Thumbs up all around - mission accomplished.

Maybe I foolishly chose the wrong dish for a place like this. I ordered salmon and the entire bottom half of my fillet was burnt black & inedible. Won't be coming here again.

Hands down one of the greatest hamburgers I have had in a long time! The restaurant feels like a nice mixuture of a sports bar and a regualar restratunt. It would be a great please to watch Iowa State play! Service was very fast, and the waiter was very polite. I would highly recommend coming here if you are in the Ames area!

A good burger spot in the Somerset area of Ames. This is a good addition to some of the other eating offerings in the area with a more casual "game day" demeanor and food selections that may be more appropriate for sports viewing and malted beverage consumption among fellow men. There was a steady lunch crowd on the Friday I visited and the wait staff was not as responsive as I would have hoped, but they gained a lot of ground with some of their menu ideas that they have. I had a Wild Turkey burger which substitutes a ground turkey patty for a beef one. The burger was creative, cooked well and was satisfying.

My bf and I heard this place serves the best burgers in Iowa. Definitely had to stop in. We ordered Traditionally Wings for appetizer, the Bacon Cheese Burger, and the Worcestershire Burger. Everything came out together. When our waitress placed out appetizer down, I mentioned that those were boneless wings; her response, "That's all we have now." Ok, well that's not what we ordered and why wouldn't she mention that when she knew or found out they were out of Traditional Wings. I didn't want to be difficult so we didn't return it. We each took a bite and that's pretty much it. We really couldn't enjoy it bc that's not what we ordered. Moving on to the burgers, it is the whole reason why we were there. We both enjoyed our burgers, but nothing to write home about. Nothing stuck out about it to be ranked best in Iowa. Burgers were mediocre good. Service was great (despite our appetizer incident). Drinks are cheap! I would come back only for their $5 tanqueray & tonic :)

I've gone in twice, and overall my verdict is this place is alright, but also nothing to write home about. The staff is pretty friendly, and the ambiance seems nice. The burgers are alight too. No where near amazing food or service, but overall this place is "A-OK".

Had burgers here. Service was ok. Burgers were ok. Guacamole on the burger seemed like it was out of a bag. Nothing exceptional.

Great quality of hamburger meat! Easily one of the best Hamburgers I've had in the state. Rightfully so too, they did win Best Burger in Iowa!

I really enjoyed eating here. The restaurant is gorgeous. Lots of wood and charm. We went on a Tuesday night. It was moderately busy. We were welcomed warmly and seated quickly. Our drink orders were taken and our food orders placed. My well done burger was delicious. Juicy, yes juicy! My fries were good, crispy and just a little overdone. I will definitely go back.

This place looks a little dead from the outside, but that's just because the windows are tinted so much... A little busy when we got there around 7 on a Saturday. Had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, but there was room at the bar so we sat down and helped ourselves to a drink. Looking through the list of beers, which isn't all that extensive but still better than some places, decided on a drink to find that our table was ready. The food is your typical sports bar food, with the added BBQ specialty (brisket, pulled pork, etc.). I had the Worcestershire Burger with sauteed mushrooms and swiss, where the Worcestershire sauce was I don't know, but it was otherwise tasty.

Pretty cool place. Great burgers, but in IMHO the appetizers are worth the visit. Not usually too much of a line, but it can get busy during peek hours. Currently ranked as the best burger in Iowa.

Nice place to catch a meal. Wife had classic cheeseburger & I had Philly cheesesteak. Polite staff, but they need to smile more. Not sure I would give it "Best" burger in Iowa.

Best burger in the state? HA!! Not even close, worst service defiantly. The server did not check if the food was ok, never came back to refill drinks or ask if we need more beers. They were way under staffed to handle the crowd and acted like "serving" was a real inconvenience. Two stars cause the the one IPA I had was at least cold...

  • Pat J.

Nice! Good food and good beer selection. Lots of tv's if sitting at the bar but not always a good view of tv if sitting in booth. Bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly but the waitresses for dinner need to work on being more personable. Prices are average. I will be back and would recommend this place to friends.

The only reason I am giving it 2 stars is because our waitress was very good. We ordered cheese ball appetizer and they took about 15 minutes to come out. They were ok. I think their ranch is homemade because it was basically milk and ranch seasoning. Then we ordered " Iowa's Best Burger". My mother got the classic and I got the jalapeño burger. Our sides were a house salad and Cesar. First, it took almost an hour to get our food. The salad was warm. The house salad was wilted iceberg lettuce with a great balsamic vinegrette. My Cesar was a weird, almost velvety textured leaf mix. It wasn't kale or baby spinach and I didn't care to ask. The dressing was a homemade one that was too think and milky tasting. I didn't like it. Now for the burger. All I can say is that the meat is of better quality. The bun is a butter bun. That is all you can taste is butter. I like butter and it was still disgusting. My jalapeños were piled all in the middle of the burger and not spread out. I had to perform surgery on my burger to make it edible. Terrible burger. The kitchen is not equipped for that kind of service. It was originally a great bar with only fried food. They decided somewhere down the line to add more tables and ruin the integrity of the place. I won't go back ever.

We come here for lunch and after ball games. It' nice to have a local place to meet, have a drink, something to eat and not too expensive. We enjoy being able to have a conversation without yelling at each other and the staff is attentive. The food has been good every time we have eaten there.

So I also disliked Brewers as the previous post. I came here twice giving it the benefit of the doubt. However, it didn't cut it for me for the following reasons. Once we got in and sat ourselves, it took literally a good 15 minutes before anyone approached us. This is even though other people came in after us. I don't know if it was the fact I was with a black friend, but I found it very strange that we we're outright ignored. Finally our waitress who was apparently "busy" (most booths were not full, nor was the place packed) decided to come over and take our order. After waiting 10 more minutes for some water (the place is not big, so it would probably be easier to just have left us cups and we could have got our own water) we finally placed our orders. I ordered their steak sandwich, rare and my friend the salmon. We waited about 30 minutes for our food and it was beyond disappointing. My steak burger/sandwich was completely over cooked, so much that it was dry and a far cry from my "rare" request. And my friends salmon was completely raw inside! So we sent the salmon back, I didn't send the steak back and just ate it grudgingly. I'm glad I didn't send it back, because 20 minutes later the salmon came back out, and lo and behold, it was still raw inside. How do you mess up salmon? I guess ask Brick City grill. Not impressed, was hoping for more, but unfortunately it was not what I expected. Sad!

Our household was happy when this place came in rather than Brewers (the place that was in this location). In general, we haven't been disappointed. It's essentially a sports bar, and the food is what should be expected for pub-style food. I have eaten here several times and have always enjoyed a perfectly reasonable meal and good service.

Went in with some friends for a relaxing Sunday night. Said they were running low on food after we ordered food. We ordered food that shouldn't be hard to prepare like burgers and the orchard chicken salad sandwich and chili and somehow it took them over hour to get our food to us. We also ordered some appetizers. The chicken dippers we ordered came with cheese sauce which was supposed to come with ranch or wing sauce. When our waitress asked what wing sauce we wanted and we said BBQ we didn't get it. My boyfriend who got chili as a side for his dinner was told once his dinner arrived that they ran out of chili when 2 other people at our table ordered chili too. The waitress behind the bar kept giving our table weird smirks because we just asking for things because our service sucked. Oh and my friend who got a big bowl of chili next to me didn't even get even get a spoon and had to call a different waitress over who was the one giving us weird smirks and us a smartass remark. Overall food wasn't that good. Wasn't that hot

Generic. This would be an alright place to grab a beer and watch a game but I wouldn't come for food or atmosphere.

Brick City is my new favorite restaurant in town. The service is great and the food is spectacular. I'm a huge fan of the Black and Bleu Salad, the St. Louis Dog and the BC BBQ Chicken. (I've eaten there a lot.) I'm a big pub food/bar food kinda guy and this place takes that and makes it even better.

I didn't like Brewers and I don't like this place. They've kept the same decor so it still has that hideous deep blue paint and black tables. It looks a lot like an 80s ad for Drakkar Noir. The lights are up super high, though, so it isn't as if the dark wood adds to the atmosphere. We started with the fried pickles because I have a love for all things deep fried. They were cooked very poorly -- the oil in the fryer was obviously too hot because they were overcooked on the outside but still gooey and cold on the inside. That should have been a sign. I ordered the "black and blue" salad which purports to be steak on mixed greens. It was the chopped up mystery meat from a Philly Steak sandwich on iceberg lettuce with no blue cheese, just bottled sugary commercial blue cheese dressing. 9 bucks for that? And you couldn't even open a clamshell of baby greens from Fareway? If it is just shaved, frozen "meat" say that on the menu, don't call it steak. Then I will have only myself to blame for ordering it. My dining companion ordered the pretzel burger. It tasted great but it was so greasy that the bottom of the bun was soaked through and it grease was dripping on the plate. He got the sweet potato fries for $1 extra and all seven of them tasted good though they were clearly cooked in the same too hot oil. They weren't bad, though, so if they had come in any sort of reasonable size we probably would have considered them a success. The server was really nice but she was clueless. When I ordered the steak "rare" that was a pretty good indication I didn't know what I was getting. We need more good restaurants in Ames but this just is not it. If you want bar food like this go to Dublin Bay or Charlie Yokes. But if you want a tasty burger you are way better off at the Cafe or Aunt Maude's. They cost the same but they are so far superior it is like another planet. And no other place in town would try to sell whatever that stuff is as "steak."
