Since no one has reviewed this location since they changed owners, this review is for the current owner. I last slate there on 6/11/2015. I've been going to this location for the past year or so since it is close by my work place but I only got the same two things: honey garlic chicken and ginger chicken...both of which are now discontinued since the change if ownership so I was was reluctant to try their food. I ordered the special plate garlic chicken and pork spare ribs. Garlic chicken had a very nice crisp in the batter and they used freshly diced garlic. The previous owner used bottled minced garlic as it was mushy and finely diced. The freshly diced garlic was diced a little bigger but added a splash of flavor that was not overwhelming, perfect. Chicken was cooked well, moist, and tender. **A side note; the owner told me that their garlic chicken recipe at Waipahu differs from the Ward Warehouse location because they go according to what sells best at certain locations.** Pork spare ribs had a nice balance of vinegar and carmelized brown sugar to my palate. Pork was tender and well cooked, the meat came right off the bone. I eat the cartilage and that was awesome as well Lol. I kind of drilled the new owner with questions, who claims to be the sister of the previous owner. She has experience since she used to own an L&L Drive Inn. She was actually pleasant to talk to. I told her that her food was better than her sister's and she jokingly replied, "That's why I kick her out!" We had a good laugh. The place was tremendously cleaned up with new paint and a revamped menu, totally revamped...now they have a variety of healthy dish options such as salmon patties with tossed greens and brown rice, I haven't tried it yet but I thinks that will be my next order. They also have new uniforms. NOTHING on the menu is above $10, amazing for this day and age. I don't know how long this will last because many places use that to draw in more customers...so take advantage as much as you can but watch your diet LOL. Parking is ample. Oh, I will be back.

The wife made a grub run for some Loco Moco take out. We do that every so often and usually it's fairly good stuff. Not this time. I really wanted fried rice with beef. I got sawdust. Holy moly was that stuff dry. How you screw up fried rice is beyond me. Even Big City Diner does it okay. Sawdust. It was dry. It was eating dry wall. Stay away from it or it'll mess with your brain cells. Most of the other stuff is okay. It's not the Hau Tree but it's local grindz.

Used to be the best. Prices went up and at the same time quality went down. Ordered the mixed bbq plate. The Teri beef was tough and the chicken was badly burned. Had to send it back. Don't know what happened we used to eat there all the time. Don't know if we'll go back. Big bummer used to be one of my favs

Not bad. Our first Hawaii meal in Hawaii. Two burgers, one curry bowl, one mini katsu chicken. Plenty of fries and onion rings. Great for (especially pickier) kids. All told, came to $35 and change with beverages. Not sure why all the hate unless you expect fast food to be grease-free.

..... I've had greasy food before......but I don't know exactly what I was thinking when placing my order. [[Our story begins]] in my friend's backyard in Waipahu. We lounge in the sun and compare the cuisine differences of our New Hampshire youth and her new (and incredible) Hawaiian life. "You'll never believe it! There's this one thing called the 'Loco Moco' that is just ridiculous! It's like ordering a heart attack!" - - - - - BREAK!: a "Loco Moco" is a layered dish: sticky rice, fried ground beef, fried egg, brown gravy (other variations include the addition of chili, bacon, spam, sausage, mahi-mahi, oysters, etc). - - - - -resume. The legendarily unhealthy mound of food has gained popularity on the Hawaiian islands since its "invention" in 1949....and I knew I had to at least attempt to consume one of these demons before departing the island. And on day, the greasy-food gods shined their oily light down on me and I found Loco Moco....the shop! Voila - a tiny little shop that reminded me of some skeezy Asian take-out experiences back on the East coast (not the cleanest, but then again...it's not like you're going there for fillet minon). The man behind the counter had a HUGE smile on his face and politely asked what he could do me for. When I placed my order his grin widened and asked "what else [I] would like with that, miss?" My response: "Load'er up! Do your worst! Bring it on!" After a few minutes and some chatter about why I was ordering the monstrosity, my meal was packed and I was headed back to my friend's place to "dine" privately. I opened the tiny styrofoam box slowly....the sight wasn't pretty. Perched atop my tower of cholesterol, the guys had scooped a fist-sized glob of the most mayonnaisey pasta salad AND coleslaw I - have - ever - had.....oh!-and bacon (just for good measure). I grabbed a fork, we took dorky pictures....I only got of the way through the meal before admitting defeat. THE SHOP: The prices were decent and the service was really friendly.....I'd love to return for a (drunken) second attempt at a loco moco (orrr maybe something else on the menu that is less intimidating), but the likelihood of this is slim as I live primarily on the Northeast Coast. ;)

Came here after a baseball game with an empty stomach. No doubt I left feeling full, but something was amiss at this loco moco. The orange chicken I ordered is lemon chicken style with orange food colored, watery sauce. The chicken was cooked so that it was chewy which made my mouth sore. The good news is that my mom had the garlic chicken which was tasty. Paired with brown rice, it has that korean style shoyu-sugar-garlic sauce that makes all fried chickens to die for. The place wasn't packed at around 2pm on a sunday but most seats were filled and service was average. The decor is not your typical refined loco moco, this one is more of a hole in the wall style which is different. Go for the garlic chicken if you hit this place up, other people who ordered before and after us ordered it so it must be popular.

It's hit or miss at this Loco Moco location. I've ordered BBQ chicken a few times here and sometimes it's decent and other times it has no flavor. Garlic chicken is just ok - I did takeout so the fried part was soggy by the time I ate it. The mochiko chicken is pretty good. About $9 for a regular plate.

This place really sucks! When it was locally run, the food was great! Now! Sucks !!! GO RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO BIG CITY DINER! Better food at comperable prices!

  • Winlove M.

So I ordered their garlic chicken and honestly the meat itself tasted old like the meat was sitting for awhile, as in like sitting for weeks. The meat tasted really awful. The first piece of chicken I ate tasted great then I worked my way to the rest of it and then boom, that awful, old meat taste. I know because I experienced it at home by accidentally cooking a week old chicken meat.

Came here a few times in the past month or two. A lot of parking for this location. Walking into this place, I was surprised with the extensive menu selection. Of course I haven't tried everything but decided to try my usual favorites at a plate lunch place. Chicken Katsu Curry - Big portion. Disappointed with the breading of the katsu though. It was very bready and starchy. Not the crispy texture that makes a great katsu. I guess their breading just soaks up the curry like a sponge? Taste and texture wise, it just doesn't work for me. So not a fan of the Katsu Curry. Maybe I'll try just a plain chicken katsu next time. Loco Moco - This place has a decent loco moco. Nothing great though. I guess it's just your average loco moco plate which isn't great and isn't horrible. They give a lot though. French Fries - These are pretty good. Nice, crispy, crinkle-cut fries. Nice flavor with the right amount of salt. Service - Typical drive inn for me. Never ate here, just came to pick up. Order, pay, grab, and go. Atmosphere - Clean establishment, for the front at least. They have a TV mounted on the wall so you can watch some TV while waiting for your order. Nice illuminated menu signs. Final Comments: This is a place that I would definitely go to again. A big factor for me is the big portion sizes. I'm the kind of guy where I have a big appetite and as long as the food is decent and there's a lot of it, I'm satisfied. Quality wise, not the best. The prices are pretty good though. I will try other things from this place and hopefully it's better than what I've tried already and will update this if anything changes. Overall Rating: "AVERAGE" Will come back here again and I recommend you check it out at least once.

If you can't decide what to order, and don't mind paying a little extra, try ordering a 2-choice mix plate. I was a little disappointed with my choices though. I got the garlic chicken and sweet sour spareribs. The garlic was a little too strong for me, and the chicken had gotten soggy by the time I reached home. The spareribs didn't seem fresh. However, as usual, the fries and onion rings I got on the side were great!

Went here for some lunch with the hubby. He ordered the bento surf pack and I had the chicken katsu curry. Both of us were a little disappointed with the taste of our food. A little on the bland side. We also had to wait for a while for our food to come out, even though there was no one ahead of us. Also, watched this guy order saimin after us and send it back because there was no taste at all according to him. One star for effort, second star for cleanliness and friendliness of staff. All in all, would not return here... Would rather spend my money McDonalds or something.

  • Mark T.

Ordered some cold ginger chicken for takeout, friends got the mochiko and garlic chicken plates. The chicken and the sauce were delicious, bit on the oily side for taste but that ginger had a nice kick. The rice was a bit mushy but still appetizing (I covered it in furikake when i got home). The mac salad, I can't say because I don't touch the stuff. 4 stars for including a box to carry all three of our plates to go (great service!) +) and food that left me full and satisfied.

  • Fiel M.

The food is average for your typical local drive in. The place was filthy. Only 2 other customers were dining but pretty much all the other tables were dirty. The floor & seats was littered with bits of food debris and empty sugar packets. Amazing how the establishment was empty but the staff doesn't bother to clean up the dining area. Looks like the place needs custodial cleanup. Had to ask the staff to clean a table for us to sit & eat. She seemed bothered uncaring. After she half-assed cleaned up, she returned behind the service counter to continue her babbling with another female employee. I don't think it's very professional to include inappropriate language during their conversation while customers are present.

Was never a huge fan of this place. It's always been nothing too great but nothing I absolutely hated either. This last time out made me a little angry though after I ordered the garlic chicken and I had several pieces that were raw. Not only that but when I tried to call back after (when it wasn't very busy to begin with) no one would pick up or respond to my call. Their voicemail is a joke too. Gotta be quick and to the point. The sad part is that I ordered the chicken extra well done to avoid this dissasster. Yet it was still pink and even a little bloody in the middle. Completed unsafe and could lead to something horrible. Wish these guys would take at least a little pride in their work and the safety of others. I won't ever be returning this loco moco or probably all of them from now on. What a shame loco moco...

  • Joei G.

I like this place, the location is perfect for me. The place is also nice and clean and they have a restroom for customers to use. In terms of food it's nothing special. This place is like your typical plate lunch place. But the people are nice and the food is still tasty. As for layout, they have a big screen TV which is nice and they are pretty spacious. They have booths and regular table seating. So yah, I enjoy coming here. Hope you do to.

    (4)
  • T T.

Havent tried many of their selections because my go to food is always the garlic chicken. It is drenched in garlic sauce and so good. Service isn't too great but what can you expect for fast food. You won't find 5 star service in a place like that, but the food makes up for it. Well atleast the garlic chickem does.

    (3)
  • Josh R.

Bought a Teri chicken plater. Either they reused old sauce or didn't soak it long enough. It was really bad....no taste at all. I will never go back and at last count told over 50 people.

    (1)
  • Aloha G.

Was craving some ono garlic shrimp. So we came here. Ordered our food and she didn't offer any drinks nor had a chance to say that we want a drink automatically said our total. Okay grumpy. Someone needs a attitude check. Plus they have a homeless hanging around here coughing everywhere laying stretching all over the chair. I guess they cant do anything cause he did buy a drink...anyways the amount of food is so small :(

  • Honest A.

I gave this place another try & it was the same as my first visit...crappy. The food lacks flavor & the prices are too high for the quality of food. Never going here again...two bad experiences is enough for me.

    (1)
  • Melisa I.

First off their phone etiquette sucks! The girl who took my takeout order had a major attitude & kept cutting me off. Rude! Now for their food. The rice was so mushy! Their Mac salad sucks & don't ever get the mahi mahi. Blegh!! My boyfriend seemed to like their hamburger steak but when I tried it I wasn't too impressed. I'd suggest just taking a drive up the street to zippys instead if you're ever wanting a plate lunch because this place sucks!

  • Greg C.

Great party platters, but feels a bit expensive. I'm always going to my Local Loco to get mochiko chicken trays because, well, I like mochiko chicken ($25.99 for the small platter, feeding 6-8). They are pretty fast, always gracious, and they have a flat screen on the wall to keep your mind occupied while you're waiting. They're right next to Big City Diner and there's lots of free parking right outside. You can get bento kind dishes, if you like, or use Loco Moco for simply your potluck needs. It's where I always go. So, if you're inviting me to your next potluck, guess what I'm bringing?

    (4)
  • Jensen S.

Probably the best place to go around here for a plate lunch. Big City Diner is next door, but I'm never happy after I leave there. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry, not the best tasting Chicken Katsu Curry, but they gave a lot of it. Me being a big guy, that's always a plus when you have like half the thing left over. For real, half. Go here before you go to the L&L nearby. Trust Me.

    (4)
  • Anela A.

I tried the fried rice and it was cold and hard, like they made it the day before. Hamburger patties also taste odd and are tough. Menu is small for a Loco Moco. Would rather go to Zippys.

    (2)
  • Grant S.

Oh Loco Moco Drive Inn, such a staple to the Hawaii diet. Truthfully I like my local Loco Moco better than the L&L. The rice is better, they are more consistent, and the Kanoelani PTA card gives you a 10% discount. My favorites here are Chicken Katsu, good sauce, good portion for the mini, with all rice of course. Loco Moco, duh. Seasoned patty is very good, generous portion, filling. French fries, these are the thick crinkle cut fries that are soooo awesome. Always get these with your loco moco mmmmm. The only drawback is the huge selection. I feel like such an extensive menu makes it hard for the cooks to be proficient in cooking all of them so I stick to my usual order.

    (3)
  • Tina H.

I ordered the garlic chicken and now I feel like I drank a cup of cooking oil and Carlos Mencia jokes. Terrible stuff. Worse yet, the whole plate smelled like it was throwing up garlic and yet there was no taste to it. All I could taste was mushy flavorless chicken. The mac salad didn't do me any favors, too. The only decent thing about this place is that it's accessible to me and anyone could probably walk in wearing underwear and get away with it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: Yeah, I definitely feel sick.

    (2)
  • M K.

It's been years since I've was here. I loved the garlic chicken. It was way better than the Kapolei's location. This time, it was dry. Not what I remember. Its a typical plate lunch establishment, nothing fancy. Nothing wowed me.

    (3)
  • Nicole K.

For some reason this Loco Moco location doesn't make a loco moco the way I like it. There's no real taste. I had to add a bunch of ketchup and tabasco to make it taste good. And the garlic chicken (which I usually love) is always so dry :( The last time I went here, I was deciding if I wanted to stick with garlic chicken (because my mom already knew what she wanted) ... and the girl at the counter kept telling me that she could help me at that register. I heard her ... I really did. But why would I want to order when I don't know what I want. After the fourth or fifth time of her telling me that she can help me I just opted for the garlic chicken. I always get the same thing, so I was browsing the menu for something new to try. I have heard that their saimin is good, so I'll try that next time.

    (2)
  • Brock M.

This place sucks. Ordered a bento and the fish had no flavor and the chicken katsu was a weird texture. It was not completely cooked so it was semi crispy and eff this place I'm never eating here again.

    (1)
  • Chris M.

Its your typical plate luch restaurant. They got the best garlic mahi ive ever tasted. That is the only thing I buy from here. Not sure how the other food taste but it must be good cause its always busy.

    (3)
  • Lofa L.

Stopped by because my friend wanted to eat at a place that takes credit cards and didn't want to go to the sit down restaurants in the area. Loco Moco is way better than the L&L in the area. The garlic chicken was great. The beef curry was a little watery and the mac salad is a little too mayo'ey for my tastes. Overall its decent local food. Not my favorite plate lunch spot, but I have no objections stopping by.

    (3)
  • Carol L.

Don't waste your time here. Service is BAD!! the cashier OVERcharged me. He aunty luckily gave me back my mulah. These people actually CHARGE for brown rice and for toss salad! SERIOUSLY!!! WHATEVER!! This is the only place i know that charges extra. Excuse me if i wanna be healthy. And charge even more for all tossed salad. Iceberg lettuce is pretty inexpensive. The chicken katsu could have been more crispy. But do what you want aunty. NEVER coming back to your establishment. Teach your niece how to count change too.

  • Jordan D.

I kind of stopped going there because the quality of the food doesnt outweigh the price.

    (2)
  • Dean H.

Walked in, first thing that struck me was that there is NO one in there. A few people walked in after me. Lots of choices on the menu. The specials looked pretty good so I called the other and asked her if she wanted to try something new. She opted for the veal cutlet and hamburger steak plate. I tried that Katsu Curry and sweet sour spareribs. I carried it home and it felt like there was about 5 lbs of food in there. I was right, there was lots of food with little taste. Sigh, yet again disappointed with my meal from loco moco drive inn, sad to say that this place needs a uplift in food quality, taste and taste...wait, did I say taste twice?

    (2)
  • Tim T.

Ugh, they need to really step it up a notch if they hope to even compete with L&L across the street. I tried the mochico chicken and pork adobe fried rice, oh was I in for disappointment. What little chicken there was in the batter filled pieces were dry and tough. There was very little flavor to speak of and was all mushy. The fried rice was even worst. There was maybe a total of two pieces of shredded adobe in the rice. I mean if you order a $6 fried rice, i would hope to get at least some piece of adobe, not some scraps that you can barely make out. Any other place would give at least a dozen chunk of adobo for that price. Maybe better management will take over one day.

Sweet sour spareribs and chicken katsu is good! Tonight I try the grilled salmon!

    (4)
  • Gene N.

Don't know about the lunch crew so this is based strictly on evening service. Customer service at night has been going downhill for some time. Tonight I ordered a BBQ mix plate and a Grilled Mahi plate. The girl at the register seemed nicer than the one the last time was there, so I tipped her even though I was just picking up and not eating in. After a normal wait time she calls me up and hands the food to me. No "Thank You", "Have a good night" or anything. Began regretting giving a tip but whatevers right? I walked off into the lovely humid night only to get home and discover that the entire order was completely wrong! Now I gotta walk my fat ass back! I walk in and the first girl is helping someone else. Her co worker comes out from the kitchen area, looks at me, and says "wrong order?". So they know they effed up but no "Sorry about that" or nothing! She takes the food in back and telling the cook they gave her the wrong plates? What? How hard is it for the people putting the orders together to open each plate before putting it in the bag to make sure it's the right shit? She comes back out with 2 plates in a plastic bag, puts it on the counter, and turns around and goes back in the kitchen. Still no "sorry" or anything! That was it! I loudly say "So I guess this is mine?" and open the top plate to make sure for myself. The girl at the register looks at me with a dumb look on her face but still says nothing. Girl #2 who brought out my food is M.I.A.. I grab my food and leave only to get home and find out that they didn't put any tartar sauce! Haa haa holy shit! Too lazy to go back again so I choke down my dry Mahi and will vote with my wallet. Needless to say I will not be back ever again! Pay your front help a few bucks an hour more and you will more than make it back with the customer service. Minimum wage + no training = no business.

You know when you're dying of hunger and are craving for something in particular and you'll never be satisfied until you get it? well that was me on Saturday. I worked a long shift at work and wanted a Loco Moco badly... like psycho badly. So I placed a order at where else? LOCO MOCO because it's litteraly 5mins away from my house. I go in to pick it up and the girl kinda flings my package on the counter so i get a liitle annoyed because the gravy kinda leaks out, but hey shes not messing up my dream today! I finally get home lift open the lid..and.. well, have you ever seen something and said "ohhh, this looks like its g2 make me sick".. i mean, the eggs were perfect, the hamburger looked cooked, the mac salad looked like any other mac salad... the gravy though, looked gray! Now, ive been to L&L and they have that weird ass gravy gravy and its been perfectly fine but after i inhaled my plate i felt pretty okay, fast foward 2-3 hours later im a victim of the worst stomach flu in the world! My stomach was punishing me for being stupid.. i woke up 7 diffrent times and called out the next day. Now, I cant say ill never eat there again bc we go couple times a month but ill be more careful of what i do order. Their Garlic Chicken is decent.. not Mitsuken or Sugoi standards so dont expect to be blown off your feet. I will stick to my cheeseburger and fries.

I know a lot of people who work here so it's nice to get good service. But that doesn't make up for the 3 times I've gotten sick eating here. The first two was because of the Saimin (which I thought was good but never mind) and the Cheeseburger. I highly doubt it was just coincidence that I got sick when I ate here. I was barfing my brains out and after I felt perfectly fine.

I gave this place another try & it was the same as my first visit...crappy. The food lacks flavor & the prices are too high for the quality of food. Never going here again...two bad experiences is enough for me.

Probably the best place to go around here for a plate lunch. Big City Diner is next door, but I'm never happy after I leave there. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry, not the best tasting Chicken Katsu Curry, but they gave a lot of it. Me being a big guy, that's always a plus when you have like half the thing left over. For real, half. Go here before you go to the L&L nearby. Trust Me.

I tried the fried rice and it was cold and hard, like they made it the day before. Hamburger patties also taste odd and are tough. Menu is small for a Loco Moco. Would rather go to Zippys.

I'll make this short and simple. I ordered the mochiko chicken and here's what I have to say. Can I get some chicken with my batter please?!?!??? I'm never ordering the mochiko chicken again!!!

This place sucks. Ordered a bento and the fish had no flavor and the chicken katsu was a weird texture. It was not completely cooked so it was semi crispy and eff this place I'm never eating here again.

Its your typical plate luch restaurant. They got the best garlic mahi ive ever tasted. That is the only thing I buy from here. Not sure how the other food taste but it must be good cause its always busy.

Don't waste your time here. Service is BAD!! the cashier OVERcharged me. He aunty luckily gave me back my mulah. These people actually CHARGE for brown rice and for toss salad! SERIOUSLY!!! WHATEVER!! This is the only place i know that charges extra. Excuse me if i wanna be healthy. And charge even more for all tossed salad. Iceberg lettuce is pretty inexpensive. The chicken katsu could have been more crispy. But do what you want aunty. NEVER coming back to your establishment. Teach your niece how to count change too.

It's been years since I've was here. I loved the garlic chicken. It was way better than the Kapolei's location. This time, it was dry. Not what I remember. Its a typical plate lunch establishment, nothing fancy. Nothing wowed me.
