This place is great! Small but has a good atmosphere and good service, the food was very good! I would go again for sure!

A quality local place, which has been around for years. Always good service and a wide selection. Japanese fare with a local style. I have never been disappointed at Kuni's.

Dessert is the only good thing. The rest was tiny overpriced portions. Ordered miso butterfish... I got 2 anorexic pieces of fried fish covered in a overbearing thick miso sauce. Food wasn't that fresh. Won't ever come back here again.

So happy I finally got to try here after months and months of wondering! I came here with my bf and his family for a birthday outing :) We arrived around 6:15pm on a Sunday evening and it was busy! I was actually starving when we were seated so everything on the menu looked delicious! My bf's mom suggested that I get the combo set which gave me the choice of choosing one, two or three sides. The sets came with miso soup, a side salad, and bean sprouts. There were over 12 different sides to choose from. I went with miso butterfish, shrimp tempura and yakitori. Miso Butterfish - There were two fried pieces of fish with miso dressing over it. I liked that the fish was tender but there were lots of bones! Be careful because some are small and you can easily choke on them. Shrimp Tempura - There were two shrimps, one carrot and one eggplant. There was kind of a lot of batter around it which everyone commented on but I didn't really notice it because I ate everything :P Yakitori - Two sticks of chicken. Very tender and flavorful! By the end of the meal, I was really full! But a very nice old man came by to greet us and recommended their famous ice cream pie. We ordered the mocha and watermelon flavor. The old man brought the pies out for us and served it to everyone! It was really nice of him to do that! He also did a fun water trick where he quickly grabbed the cup of water and spun it without spilling a drop of water! He did it so quickly that I was really surprised! :) Thank you for the entertainment! :) While we were having dinner, we were serenaded by people at the bar next door. I didn't even know there was a bar connected to the restaurant until I heard the song, "Lean on Me," sung by a girl with a squeaky voice. Fun entertainment for the night! Note: They only take reservations for groups of 7 or more! 31 Yelps Review Challenge - 9/31

Great place for teishoku. Comes with miso soup, salad, bean sprouts, namasu and tea. My favorites include the tofu steak and shrimp tempura.

Friendly staff, portions are out of this world! Their tofu steak is sooo good and healthy at the same time. A mainstay staple of Waipahu town, still never seems to fail me.

Best teishoku for the price. BB -Q , delicious flavor, and the tempura is very crispy. No better place in Waipahu.

Been back to Kuni's 2 more times since the last review. Once for lunch and another time for dinner. My father likes "soupy" types of Japanese food like sukiyaki or chicken / pork tofu. It's very hard to find places that offer these anymore. I decided to try the chicken tofu to see if my father would like it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of vegetables and really hot in the serving kettle. We'll see how it does with my parents. Will be taking them to Kuni's tomorrow. Let's see if it passes my dad's discriminating taste. To my surprise, my dad didn't get a sukiyaki type dish. Both my parents stuck to things like vegetable tempura, sashimi, etc. They did enjoy themselves, but it was too much food...

The food is pretty good but the service is super quick . I could sit down order and eat with in 30 minutes and leave. Talk about fast service.

One of my FAVORITE places in Waipahu! I went here for lunch after my session at New Hope Leeward and it was such a GREAT idea! It wasn't too crowded and parking was EASY. Gotta be one of the best experiences when it comes to parking because it's so close by. It was an easy in, we were seated right away. Our waitress was great and the owner came to check up on all the customers and see how everyone was doing. He was super cool and even recommended a few items to check out. Really great suggestions!!!! The food isn't TOP NOTCH like the expensive japanese restaurants but heck it's freakin' still damn good! The price was probably my favorite part. We had three people and it came out to be less than $40. We got mainly the single plates but it was still a great deal because there was so much food we didn't even finish it! The place wasn't modern or chic or anything but it was a really cool, chill place and the temperature was PERFECT. I didn't feel rushed, awkward or anything where some places you just do. LOVEEEE this place!

We had dinner here on our first night, and were totally happy with our meal here. We had to venture out a bit, but were happy to find such a great spot. Prices were very reasonable, the food was came out fast, and the service was spot on. The owner was really friendly, but a little surprised that we didn't live there. I don't think this place gets many tourists. If i lived in the area, this would be on my rotation:)

Innnnteresting. I'm trying to be kind to this place since it pleasantly surprised me on my first visit. Now, I don't frequent Waipahu very much, and I was surprised when we passed an adult store in the parking lot of this place. I was tempted to go in, but remembered that I had my four year old with me. For another day. We walk in, and there's a terrible smell emitting itself from the carpet. Damp dog, beer, and pee. Not a good start. First thing my daughter says is, "I have to go potty.". Darn. So we walk through a narrow doorway, past a couple way over middle aged men on barstools (who had to get out of their chairs to let us pass). It's weird for me taking a 4year old to the bathroom in a bar, although I've done it plenty of times at Side Street. The singing is loud, not great, and I can hear their conversation in the bar all the way in the restaurant. I had a tempura don, which I've had at many places, and this one was pretty par for the course. The sauce was good, the tempura slightly too soggy (cover was left tightly on) but altogether satisfying. Daughter had the kake udon, which was good, but a little salty. Next time I'll get whatever it is that comes on the sizzling plate. The smell was heavenly. Guess what they had. The elusive watermelon cake! It was just as good as it looked. My bf remembered that I was so disappointed when the waitress at Nancy's said they were out, so he brought me here to get it. The manager (or owner) brought it out and even cut it for us. He did this cute water trick for my daughter by spinning the cup around, really personable. All in all, cute hole in the wall place I will definitely return to. Not too many places left like this, and I'd definitely patronize these cute restaurants over the Ruby Tuesday and Chili's any day.

Awesome customer service. Really friendly staff. Teishoku tonkatsu cooked perfectly.

Though it may not look it, this tiny, hole-in-the-wall resturaunt serves some of the best japanese food on this side of Oahu. I haven't ordered a menu item that I didn't enjoy thoroughly. The old Japanese man who I think is the owner is so cute and funny! A must-dine if you're craving awesome Japanese food in Waipahu!

  • Les U.

The food, ordinary local Japanese style food. The teriyaki sauce used is outstanding, rivaling that of Hapa Grill. Portions are pretty good, nobody left hungry. Try the watermelon delight ice cream. Watermelon, vanilla and honeydew melon flavored with a crushed oreo cookie crust. It really is pretty good. If you can, try getting all three flavors with some crust, all in one bite. Some yelpers complained about a smell.....all I could smell was the food cooking. The decor?, I came to eat, not look at furniture or artwork. Noisy?, kind of, but we lucked out, nobody singing (or attempting to) karaoke tonight. Funny thing though, once the food is served, the noise, conversations all fade away. Parking?, crowded even for a Monday night. Bottom line, this place is good food at a reasonable price.

Good 'ol Kuni's... They keep on serving up consistently good Japanese cuisine. Had my old favorite, the Tokyo Teriyaki / Shrimp tempura combo with sashimi. As you Kuni's regulars know well, the steak comes on a sizzling platter with one of the tastiest Teri sauces I know of. The gf had the tofu steak combo which also comes on a sizzling platter with Teri sauce on it. Their namasu is worth mentioning, just like the one Mom and Grandma used to make back in the day! Very good! I noticed that the prices have gone up a bit, but so has everywhere else. It's worth it and the food is tasty. Parking lot can get a bit crowded around dinner time, but it's not impossible to find parking.

Kuni's lounge gets a fair 3 stars for their friendly staff and reasonable prices on beers ($3.75-$5.25). Good local watering hole for Waipahu.

The tofu steak is worth coming back for! The owner is HE~larious! Completes the whole dining experience. A home~y place to dine. Its like going to mom's to eat. We also had shrimp pempura ..average. Butterfish..mmm. Leave room for dessert. The owner suggest "#1 dessert." You will not be dissapointed! =)

Waipahu....not many will make the drive out here but this is a hideout that you must visit. When I was young, this used to be our weekly Sunday gathering spot for japanese food. You can do a 3 choice for less than $20. A must try is there famous Tofu Steak, which is a little healthy but a little not with its teri sauce. With every meals comes Miso soup, sprouts, and cabbage along with hot green tea. Ive ventured and had there sukiyaki and donbori's which are all great. I havent had anything that I didnt love!!! New to the menu is there desserts by RB.

Went here on a Thursday night and was happy to see that there were a few other folks there but we didn't have to wait for a table. The bar/karaoke area is close to the dining area, so you can hear the music and singing - but it wasn't so loud that we couldn't have a conversation easily. The awful singing was also quite amusing! The decor isn't really that up to date or fancy, but the food was great and service was quick and friendly. As other reviewers have noted, the tofu steak is delish. It comes out hot and sizzling with a really nice texture and yummy sauce. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get! My husband and I used to go to Kunio (in Waikele) for our go-to Japanese restaurant but after a couple of less than great meals there, we will likely be heading to Kuni instead.

My favorite place for japanese teishoku!! I love this little restaurant/bar that's hiding in the back end of waipahu. I came here when I was a little girl, and it's better now than I remember. I love the house dressing on the salad, the miso soup, the tofu steak, the miso butterfish, and most of all...the Oyako Udon!!!! If you like oyako don, you must try the udon version of it!!! The broth is so rich and yummy, it'll leave you with no room for the ice cream pies they try to make you eat after! It's always nice to see the staff do tricks with the glasses of water for the kids. I've always been a regular here and will always come back!!! If you're looking for good japanese food on the west side of oahu, look no further than kuni's!!!!

I went there between lunch and dinner, so the restaurant was closed. We hung out in the bar which let us order off of the restuarant menu, which was nice. The atmosphere was very neighborhood bar, very guys place. The food was okay, not great but not the worst I've had. The prices are a little pricey for the kind of place they run. And the menue is just the mad confusion of different combos, offers, every kind of japanese dish - except for rolls - is thrown on there.

Hole in da wall Japanese. They get 4 stars cause they know exactly who they are. They don't try to be a fine dinning wanna be, the are plain and simple and very comfortable being that. Food comes out fast and Sato is Sato. I've tried almost everything on the menu and it is all pretty good. Some favs include miso pork tofu, pork tofu, miso butterfish, tonkatsu, tofu steak, miso salmon, ny steak... Simple food gone good!

I've lived on the Leeward side for ages and have passed this place so much that it blended in with the environs. I've always heard good things and always said I would try it out one day, finally that day came. Seriously, I am kicking myself for not coming in sooner, the food was great and the service was also, price was reasonable for the quality of food. Menu is pretty extensive and they even have many keiki selections for those like me with rugrats. Don't be like me and wait an eternity to try Kuni, now I know why they are still in business, good stuff.

We had catered food from Restaurant Kuni for my Grandfather's wake, we normally order from Ige's. Luckily, Ige's was unavailable at the time we requested and we chose to go with Restaurant Kuni. I always refuse to eat food at wakes, not only because of the fact that it's at a mortuary, but simply because I don't care for the food. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the food, it was very good. The set menu that we ordered included sushi (more veggies than rice and the nori wasn't rubbery), macaroni salad (yummy but lots of mayo), noodles (lots of meat and veggies, not just oodles of noodles), shoyu pork (generous tender pieces of pork), fried aji (these were yummy little fried fish - well not so little), chicken katsu (nice chunky pieces and very moist with the katsu sauce was very tasty), bean sprouts (crunchy and tasty - I like bean sprouts cooked, but not over cooked so it was perfect!), namasu (just enough vinegar, not overpowering - you know the kind that makes you choke and tear), oh and had shrimp tempura....I have no clue how that looked or tasted - ran out by the time we were able to make our plates LOL. But I'm sure they must've been really good since it was sold out! Shachou-san, domoarigatou gozaimashita. Watashitachi wa tabemono ga oishii to omoimashita!

Good ol' Kuni's. If you overcome the often abrasive singing coming from their bar and are willing to speak over the karaoke or simply sing along...this place is great! (: Conveniently located in the same parking lot as errrr... Suzie's... Kuni Restaurant has some decent Japanese food. Definitely a hole in the wall spot. When you walk in, you will definitely question why you decided to eat here... but as soon as you meet Sato-san, you will quickly change your mind. The food is delicious and never disappoints. I often have the chicken tofu nabe or the teriyaki steak teishoku. Both come with salad and miso soup ... and entire tub of rice. The portions are decent and you will definitely walk away with a happy belly. The food presentation is straight forward and the place could use a major face lift... but definitely decent for a Japanese restaurant located in Waipahu ... next to Suzie's. Watch out for that watermelon ice cream cake! Sato-san will get you every time. The trick is... you must try it and not say WOW. If you say wow ... he will charge you or else it's on the house! Consider yourselves warned. Kuni is a great family restaurant, decently priced for the food. Food is delicious and it's just like walking into grandma's kitchen. You'll probably walk away with leftovers.

Some really friendly guys sitting at the next table recommended that we try the Family B set to share. We loved it! Shoyu Pork, Tempura, miso soup, teriyaki tofu, miso mahi mahi, tuna sashimi - all was deliciousl! And then the owner talked us into trying his watermelon ice cream pie. I was full but had to try it. What a great way to top our meal. This is a local place so the atmosphere is kind of noisy but very friendly.

4 and 1/2 stars, really? Why so high yelp? My bf has been wanting to try this place for awhile and he finally got his chance to try it the other night. This place reminds me of Nancy's kitchen, a bar (lounge) area and restaurant area. As we walk in all we could hear is a filipino lady singing her heart out to some random song and the first thing that came to mind were my Filipino neighbors. Oh no, am I going to have to listen to this while I eat my dinner? The prices here are a little expensive for what you get (about $10 a plate) I ordered the miso butterfish and it was two little pieces smothered in a sugary mess. And by sugary mess, I mean it basically tasted like candy instead of miso, extremely sweet so if you love those really sweet dishes, this maybe for you. Definitely not for me. My bf has order the pork katsu, which I ended up eating since he liked the butterfish. The pork was dry but the outside was crunchy and not really oily. Service was okay. Our server came to our table three times to see if we were ready to order. I thought she was a little pushy since we told her it was our first time and we would need more time the first time around. Maybe she could've been helpful by letting us know popular dishes, but that's not her job... So Eeh!

Watermelon ice cream pie is the bomb! Refreshing and light! Friendly wait help. Not very well ventilated- we left smelling like food. The karaoke singing from the adjoining bar didn't fit with a Japanese restaurant.

Catered for my mom's 98th birthday luncheon. Chose the 11 Course Special. The food was ono! I was surprised how good the makizushi was. I told my wife that I want them to cater my funeral.

My mom adores this place and your mom will too! The owner is super cool. He did a sick monkey butt trick that I still don't even understand. I think it was something about a cup. Anways ask him to do it. He will and you wont regret it! Also the owner is so cool. I told him it was my first time there and my bf and I got a free watermelon ice cream cake that has oreo crust on it. It was so good that we kept coming back for more. Portions are really huge for like 18 bucks if you get the two choices (mines usually ahi and tempura or ahi and tonkatsu). You get miso soup, like four cups of rice, little crunchy cabbage things, 5 pieces of fresh raw ahi, four tempura and 3 veggie temp, if you get tonkatsu theres like 10 pieces i think.Oh and you get a salad with the meal too. Which in all you really should be full when you leave.

I really do NOT understand why there are so many good reviews on here! I would not give this place any stars if that were an option. The only thing I can imagine is that they encourage all of their friends and family to write something for them. First off, from the moment we walked in there it had the most foul smell. I have no idea what it was, but that should have been a tip off that we should have left. However, because of all the positive reviews we decided to stay. So, we waited in this completely EMPTY restaurant for someone to seat us. We were just about to leave when this younger looking girl seated us. It took her 15 minutes to come back to take our drink order. At that time we didn't mind though. We were busy deciding what we wanted to eat and looking around the restaurant. The furniture is very old, the lighting is poor, and there is only a small doorway that separates the restaurant portion from the bar. Every once in a while we would see the unnaturally well endowed bartenders walk out and the creepy old men staring at them. Seriously, I have been to a lot of dive bars, but I would NEVER consider even grabbing one bear here. Actually, to make a long story short, it took forever for us to receive our food and check. The hot water they tried to pass off as tea was terrible, as was the soup. The bean sprouts were good, but really, how do you mess up those?? The food was mediocre at best and the portions are very small. It was perfect for me, but the men I was eating with were not full in the slightest. The watermelon pie was pretty good. The owner or manager or something came out and served us. He was very personable. However, my group was not expecting it and was a little confused as to what was going on since the service was awful before that... and after. We literally waited for 30 minutes to get our check. There still was no one in the restaurant, including our waitress. All in all we spent almost 2 hours there. All in all, I regret not leaving right away. It is probably one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten at. However, if you can deal with the smell, terrible service, and mediocre food, Kuni's is the place for you!

  • Cheryl K.

How can I forget to review this place! I grew up eating Kuni's. In fact my grandma and grandpa were friends of the owner when they were alive a while back. Anyways, aside from the bar area with drunken people singing karaoke not being separated from the restaurant area, the food is great! (With the convenience of Suzie's right next door) Haha. I usually eat the chicken katsu, miso butterfish, tempura, or tofu steak. Pretty awesome and okay prices. But for a good local japanese restaurant when you are in the Waipahu area, please visit!

Great gem in Waipahu! Food is delicious and very affordable. The service is okay but the great food makes up for it. Great for an early dinner or for lunch. Beware, it can get very busy at dinner. Parking may be a hastle as they share a lot with other businesses.

LOCATION: Hidden by Suzie's Adult Warehouse, a bar (which is part of the extended restaurant), and a drive inn... this place can, AT FIRST be a huge turn off. But once inside the comfort of the old (but still decently up kept interior) and often decently busy restaurant, you'll feel like you're at your Japanese grandparent's place down in the country somewhere. PATRONS: My parents enjoy traditional style teishoku meals(as most old Japanese folk do) and I had stumbled across this place due to a friend's recommendation. Not like my parent's are super old (or at least I like to believe they aren't, it'd be sad to admit that my time with them is limited) but this place is like the meeting spot for old Japanese grandmas and grandpas. I mean, sure they might all grab their 50 cent coffees at McDonalds before heading over here, but I was amazed how many cutesy old Japanese couples there were enjoying the old school flavor of the food served here. FOOD: My parents had the tonkatsu, miso salmon, teriyaki chicken/beef, miso soup, and some other seafood dish (sorry I hate seafood so I didn't pay much attention to it). I had the nabeyaki udon. The udon broth's flavor was unique, as in it doesn't taste like the flavors found in upscale and/or newer udon shops. It's got that... I hate to use traditional or old just because I've used that word a couple of times now, but it's got a flavor that reminds me of what my grandma used to serve me whenever I used to visit her. Some may find that inviting, others may find it too disengaging. The dishes my parents had were not over the top, there was no real wow factor, but they weren't bad either. THE BEST PART OF THIS PLACE: The owner, he's this sort of decently old skinny Japanese man (you could probably call him ojisan and he wouldn't take offense). He patrols the restaurant, speaking to people who will lend him an ear; he can be funny, he can be amusing, and he can be engaging and intelligent, but altogether he sets up an atmosphere that really does make it feel like you're somewhere comfortable. He recommended the dessert, and I would too. It's these themed ice cream desserts sort of like an ice cream cake. It was AMAZING! In fact, I probably would rather eat their desserts than anything else served in the restaurant (sorry the flavor's just too old school for me!) Best line(s) said by the owner: "I make this, you know" (refering to the dessert) Me: "WOW REALLY!? It's amazing!" Owner: "Yes I know... I make this phone call to the guy who brings me the dessert" I was sold on his humor! I'll be there again!

First introduced to this restaurant by my husband and after that first meeting, we have been regulars here. We normally get the combination plates with two or three items depending on how hungry we are. My favorite is the chicken katsu and the taste of the katsu itself is not exceptional, it's the katsu sauce that really makes me want to eat it. I'm sure if I slathered that sauce on what ever I ordered I would love it too. I tried the tofu steak on my last visit and didn't care much for it.

My bf took me to dinner here last night since the restaurant he had planned on taking me to was closed. I checked my handy Yelp app and saw that Kuni Restaurant was close by and got some pretty good reviews. (Thanks Yelp app!) We got there pretty early so it was fairly empty. Neither of us could decide what we wanted to eat so the bf suggested we get Family Combo A. For $50 we got a whole tableful of food that we couldn't finish. We started off with some miso soup, tsukemono, bean sprouts, and namasu. I liked the namasu and the miso soup, but nothing super special. Then they brought out sashimi and I was surprised at the quantity - 8 total pieces for the 2 of us to share. Then came the teriyaki rib eye, tofu steak, and chicken katsu. The chicken katsu was nice and crispy. Rib eye was tender and the teriyaki sauce was not too salty. I was surprised that I liked the tofu steak. It's basically fried tofu with teriyaki sauce. And the tempura came out last - 4 pieces of shrimp, 2 eggplant, and 2 carrot. The shrimp was actually shrimp and not just breading! We were stuffed and still had enough left over for lunch today. Plus the waitresses were super friendly and made sure to check on us to see if we were doing ok. I was a little bummed that I couldn't try the desserts... they had some kind of awesome looking ice cream pie things in different flavors. But now that we've discovered this place, i'm sure we'll be back!

WAIPAHU TOWN: Kuni Restaurant is one of those places that reminds me of what Waipahu was like when we were little kids. Even though I lived a bit closer towards town, Waipahu holds a lot of first-time memories for me...first bamboo fishing pole and softball glove from Arakawa's...first BMX from the bike shop across the street...first place I ended up at after learning how to drive a stick shift (i.e., the farthest place I could drive from home without getting on the freeway). For a small, old-fashioned Japanese-style restaurant located at the edge of Waipahu, Kuni offers a pretty decent menu of old school comfort food. COMFORT FOOD: For some reason, I always gravitate towards eating the same thing at Japanese restaurants. I guess I'm not so adventurous when it comes to Japanese food. My friend suggested the salmon, but I opted to get the pork tofu, which turned out to be quite good! Some places use a heavy hand with the mirin, but the dashi was quite light but flavorful. The teri chicken and miso salmon are very tender and tasty...I would totally order it again. SERVICE: Considering how busy it was the few times I've been there, I'd say that the service is great. The owner will often keep an eye on the tables as well, directing the wait staff towards different tables and making sure that everyone has enough room for their ice cream pie dessert. :0)

I was not impressed with this place. As soon as you walk in it has an odd smell that made my group kind of uneasy. As far as the courtesy of the waitress and manager, i have nothing to complain about but nothing to complement either. It was kind of odd when the manager came out to serve us our watermelon cake desert but he was a really nice guy and he made it rather fun so it was pretty neat. Over all i found the food mediocre. Nothing to write home about. If you wanna just grab some food next to a karaoke bar with old men drinnking alone and bartenders hired because of their two very large qualifications, then go sleez it up at this place. You won't get bad food, you just won't walk out of there amazed.

It has been a while since I've eaten here but we decided to give it a try last night. The host handed us our menus and sat us immediately. No wait. Good, cause I was hungry. When I first looked at the menu I noticed there were a lot of choices for dinner and the prices were very reasonable. We decided to order a 2-choice Teishoku with Tonkatsu and Sashimi and a Yosenabe with Sashimi and Shrimp Tempura. The food started coming out right away.... every Teishoku meal comes with tossed salad (with their own Kuni's Dressing, very ono...), bean sprouts, tsukemono, miso soup and rice. The food was very tasty, and the portions were very generous. I've had better Yosenabe but it was okay. Sashimi was fresh and the Shrimp Tempura was just right. The service...well, let's say I think the waitress we had just started there. To begin with...she had to push things on the side so she could write our order in her book on our table... she served us most of our food without any napkins or chopsticks... she kept saying she would bring us more tea but it never came... and when they brought us our bill...it was the wrong one. The Host was very entertaining though. He kept trying to get us to try the ice cream desserts. He said if it doesn't make us say "WOW" after the first bite...he'd give it to us for free. We were so full there was no room for dessert. Thanks anyways... Then there's the karaoke that started up at about 8pm in the adjoining lounge. The feedback in the system was a little annoying and the wahine that was trying to sing...should let the others sing...that's all I'll say about that...it was entertaining though... I'd say...all in all...I'll come back to try it again.

Was out in Waipahu today when I decided to stop on in to grab a bite to eat since I saw a buddies review here. It's been a longtime since I've came across another home style cooked Japanese meal like grandma used to make. Most of the new restaurants popping up are Euro-style or Sorry not even Asian in the kitchen cooked no offense, but it taste different. I had the mini (3) choice can't go wrong for less that $16.00 was so full that I needed a wheel chair to leave. Food came with all the side dishes and soup as well. Yes, must agree have to try that tofu steak broke the mouth. I wanna go back might be driving there sometime this weekend! hmmm.

My family and I have been coming here since I can remember. It's definitely a whole in the wall restaraunt but I absolutely love it. Best chicken katsu and miso soup in the world! They also sell this ice cream cake, I recommend the watermelon. There's a bar in the back and sometimes it get's loud. But honestly it makes the atmosphere more enjoyable. I love it here.

My review is pretty similar to other reviews...food was good, kitchen a little dirty. Although there's a lot of pics of the tofu steak, I wasn't a fan. I wished I went with my initial choice of sashimi...but the beef Teri was yummy-very similar to Kunio in Waikele.

There arent many reasons for me to travel to Waipahu, quite frankly Ive only been there about 5 times BUT working in Waipahu's favor is Kuni's. I went there for the first time for a Sunday family dinner and first impressions were a bit on the "wtf" side. I first saw Kuni's bar which is right next to the restaurant and saw some suspicious looking fellows hanging around outside. Its me, my grandma, aunt and mom and Im thinking great how comfortable will this meal be. I find the door to the restaurant and inside its what you'd expect from a traditional Japanese restaurant with patrons not looking like they are waiting for their parole officer to show up like the ones outside by the bar. The menu is also typical of a traditional Japanese restaurant with the 2 or 3 combo deals that come with all the little sides like miso soup, salad and the other veggies. I ordered the miso salmon and katsu combo, not a risky pick but being my first time here Im not about to throw a dart blind folded. My miso salmon was spectacular, the miso on the salmon was thick and super tasty! Its the best miso salmon I can remember ever having. The salmon was moist with the miso but somehow the salmon skin was really crispy! The katsu was really good also, crunchy and not oily. Portions are pretty big considering I was stuffed after only a 2 combo. Service was great, the owner came by and said they have been here for 40 years and asked why its our first time here I wanted to respond "location location location" but didnt. He was very nice and gave us free watermelon ice cream. I watched as he went to every table and talked story with everyone and gave everyone a little free something, tsukimono, ice cream or some noodle soba looking thing, nice touch dude, touche. This is probably the best traditional Japanese restaurant Ive been to in a while, the food here is excellent! I wouldnt mind making the drive from town to support this place, everyone is happy with the company and food. Dont mind the porn shop next to the place, this is certainly one of the most eclectic strip malls Ive ever been to.

I could literally sing a song and dance a dance about this amazing place. Maybe I should. They do have a karaoke bar on the other side of the restaurant. My family and I have been regulars at this restaurant for years. I practically grew up on their teishoku dishes and Sato-san's, the owner, water cup trick (turns a filled water cup upside down). My Kuni-favorites are the tofu steak, miso butterfish, bbq beef, and yosenabe. What is also pretty fantastic about this place is that they deliver a plentiful amount of wonderful food to your table so quickly! Sato-san and his staff know their trade well - create authentic, homemade Japanese cuisine with minimal wait and expense, and always with smile (and a joke or two). I brought my boyfriend here for lunch during the day, and I have to say that I much prefer dinner. It has nothing to do with the food or menu (because they are the same for lunch and dinner), but EVERYTHING to do with the heavy-handed karaoke taking place on the bar side of the restaurant during dinner. To me, that's a huge plus in ambiance for this restaurant because there's nothing like hearing a really bad, drunkin' rendition of "Tearin' Up My Heart" while conquering their teishoku dishes.

This is the place to go for better than home-cooked japanese food! My family & I have been coming here for the last 15 yrs. Granted, the lounge/karaoke room is not the ideal location (next to dining room) some of the wannabe crooners do entertain us like a dinner show in Waikiki. Sato-san is the owner and a real hands on guy. He will seat people, take orders, bus tables, etc. The service is very quick. Within a couple of mins of being sat water is delivered and the order is ready to be jotted down. Food is served as soon as the orders are coming up. My usual is the teishoku with tonkatsu, shrimp tempura & butterfish. Serving sizes are better than average for japanese food. But, you gotta save room for the desserts. Watermelon pie. That's all I have to say. This is a stripped down version of Gyotaku BUT with better food and service!

Consistently delicious. Just ordered take out Bento D which includes 1 piece shrimp tempura, teri chicken, teri steak, fried fish, and pork katsu for around $11. It was a lot of food and could probably feed two medium sized people. Had to wait a little while, but the owner was very nice and apologized for the wait and gave me free miso soup.To eat in I would suggest the butterfish or the tokyo sizzling steak.

i've always noticed this place since i was a kid, but never had the opportunity to check it out as my parents aren't big on japanese food. today was my first time. the food: definitely priced like a dine-in restaurant, i had ordered a mini combo plate with teri chicken and tempura. the food itself was not bad, but nothing spectacular either. overall very filling meal. the staff: the girl that took my phone order was very straightforward. i'm not the type of person that gets butt hurt over not getting good customer service, but she could take a few pointers in being personable, or at least acting like it. upon picking up my order, there was an older gent there that was much more courteous. the restaurant itself: didn't take in much as i ordered take-out, but it did seem a little awkwardly setup. right as you step into the door, you have a clearer view of the kitchen than you do of the dining room. having a bar / karaoke lounge attached to it probably helped the place to remain in business for so long. i'd probably give this place another try sometime later.

#15/365 After we saw that our first destination for some butterfish was closed, I remembered this place nearby so I suggested we give it a shot, and at 6:30p or so we were in luck as it was open. The parking lot was FULL but we were lucky enough to snag a spot from a guy that was just leaving. The restaurant was fairly full too but with a couple open tables for us so we didnt have to wait :). The waitress there was young, probably around my age and she was FAST. She just asked us "how many people" when we walked in and ZOOM she was at our table calling us over to be seated hahaha. When we were ready to order, she pulled another fast one as she sped across our table and asked if we were ready to order while heading to the kitchen to grab food orders. Then when she came out BOOM she speed talked through our order and disappeared; coming back to quickly bring out the rest of our set (miso soup, tossed salad with their dressing, pickled bean sprouts, and the vinegar'd cabbage). Then another man, which I think was the owner, magically appeared at our table and quickly set down a small plate of pickled cucumber and said "try this" as he zoomed away to chat with the other table. The pickled cucumber was pretty good, with 1 slice of carrot and a few pieces of sliced daikon mixed in. The miso soup was standard, and had 3 small pieces of tofu so that was nice, the dressing on the salad was pretty good and light in flavor, the bean sprouts were also good, and the cabbage could have used more seasoning. As for our entrees, I ordered the miso butterfish and my friend ordered the teriyaki butterfish for about $12 (1 choice set is $9.95 + $1.75 for butterfish choices). Within 10 mins our order came and I was quite surprised to see that my fish was fried with a miso sauce on top, so not like your typical butterfish. It was pretty good but yeah, I prefer the traditional miso butterfish, as the only flavor come from the sauce and not the fish itself. For dessert the first thing I noticed was that they have RB ice cream pies!!! These things are the bomb diggity and I wish that they actually had their own shop so that I can get them more often =9. They had a picture of a limited time only strawberry cheesecake ice cream pie but sadly they said they didnt have it anymore :(. Oh well, at least we went with our second choice and got the watermelon ice cream pie and boy was it DELICIOUS! At first bite, the first thing taste that came to my head was ooo taste like a jolly rancher mmm. The guy/owner was nice enough to cut it up for up in smaller slices, that was really nice but being a yelper I wanted to take a picture =-P. It was also funny how he went around table by table asking them if they wanted dessert and advertising how it was soooo delicious. Then when a table would order it he would show it to his customers and say its good you need to try it lol. Overall the food was a 3.5, the ice cream pie was a 5 and the service was a 5 because it was face and the people were nice. I'd def come here to try more dishes, esp the hot, sizzling plates and of course to try more of the ice cream pies!

went there Friday night for the first time after a bunch of my coworkers said it great. we both had the teishoku and the food portions were large and tastier owner came by and we told him that it was our first time even after living in Waikele for 20 years and he was shocked to say the least. I asked him to do the water trick and he was smooth. He brought out his watermelon desert ,sat on our table and would not move until we said "WOW". We loved it so much we went back on Saturday to eat and sing Karaoke. the bar staff were super and fun. The price and portion are better, larger, and tastier than other local Japanese restaurant's We have found our Karaoke spot and its here at Kuni's

I luv this place. Barbecue chicken and shrimp tempura. Their tempura sauce is the best. They also have a "home made" vegetable salad sauce that is also awesome. Now if they would include green tea ice cream for desert, this place might be number 1. Well, not but close anyway. And its only 4 stars because of the bar that it is attached to. It can get real noisy from the bar and then you may also be forced to hear someone who can't sing belt out flat notes. Fortunately it doesn't ruin the food, but for sure it does affect the atmosphere. I didn't say ambience since this is really kind of like a hole in the wall restaurant though it is a good size and almost always busy. And if you like traditional Japanese food, then this place might not be for you as the food is on the sweeter side. For me, I luv it!

Attended a funeral catered by Kuni's last night. Everyone enjoyed the food but I'm going to have say that Ige's is better for post-funeral fare. Maki Sushi *** The fillings were a little too fluorescent for me Bean Sprouts *** A tad light on the sesame oil Pickled Vegetables *** Not bad flavor, but ice cold/frozen...strange. Tempura Mahi *** Decent batter, light and not too oily Teri Beef *** meh. Chocolate Sheet Cake * There was a LONG black hair in my piece. Lots of leftover cake but I couldn't bring myself to get another piece...too grossed out.

Definitely a classic restaurant still holding onto the "golden days" of Waipahu. I had grown up eating at Kuni's from small-kid time, each time enjoying the smells of saimin and the sizzling dishes of teri beef and the best TOFU STEAK in town. Anytime my parents were down this side of the island, we'd try to figure out a place to eat, but usually find ourselves heading towards the familiar sign that reads "Restaurant Kuni". Parking can be hectic at times, especially during dinner and because it share the lot with other businesses, but we've usually never had to wait more than a few minutes. Once inside, we usually sit at booths with the same cushions and covers that was here when I was my daughter's age (4). Some new items have been added over the years, but the staple foods are always there. Glossing over the menu, I already know what I like to get - a combination Teishoku with tempura and either teriyaki chicken or their famous TOFU STEAK! The salad and tsukemono comes out first and I actually have to change the word "salad" to "lettuce with my dressing". The ginger miso dressing is yummy but I think they overload it way too much. Overall, the food is always good (tempura doesn't have too much batter, but crunches very nicely) and the service is okay. I don't like to pick on their service because the waitresses have been there for many years and have always done the best they can even when it's packed. If anything I have only two negative points about Kuni's, with the first being that the bar/lounge is right next to the restaurant and there is nothing but space to separate the two. So when "uncle" gets some liquid courage in him, he thinks all of a sudden he can sing better than Michael Jackson (R.I.P) and starts absolutely tearing a good song into little itty bitty pieces. The other negative is the water - not sure if it's the glasses or that their tap water but it tastes like chlorine to the degree of needing to order something else so that the water isn't the only liquid available at the table to drink. Great restaurant, good memories, delicious food (one more time...TOFU STEAK!), decent service and "entertaining" atmosphere.

Kuni's is one of the well-known places in Waipahu, like Tanioka's or Poke Stop. It is located near Suzie's adult store. The restaurant has a cocktail bar and looks a little dated (with wooden furnishings and old carpet). Gotta be honest. Not that I'm not in my other reviews but sometimes it's not easy to say bad things about a place... While the food was decent, it took me a while to get comfortable with the faint smell of urine in the restaurant. I was invited by a coworker who grew up in the area, so leaving was not really an option.. considering he likes the place. Ok.. so now I can talk about the food. The food was above average. They have this "Golfer special", in which there must be a minimum of 4 people. It's around $12.95 per person and $2 more if you want sashimi. They served chicken katsu, tofu, teri beef, rice, noodles and other stuff family-style.. It's a lot of food, tastes pretty good. The ahi sashimi was fresh. Pretty much it's just the ambiance I had a hard time getting past. There's no problems with the food. P.S. One thing I noticed was that all the waitresses are dressed in revealing tops...cleavage and all. Might be alright for some guys but maybe not for families or a place to be taking your granny out for lunch.

I thought the food was okay. I tried the pork tofu a couple of times and it was so super hot. I had to take out the food and put it on a plate before I could even eat it. Another time I went I had the teriyaki ribeye steak. That was pretty good. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. I live Kaneohe and come here only for my Mom because she loves it. So whenever I go with her I don't know what to order.

went there on Mom's Day - after Max'(which I had a gift cert - could not accomodate us - 1 to 2 hour wait) - there must've been at least fifty people there on steps - checked out Kuni's - who I read on an internet food blog - was great - true to the revue - IT WAS - EXCELLENT - we waited for five minutes for our table - food came correct , hot - and fast fifteen minutes later - Manager Mr. Sato - was a genial guy - witty and super efficient - he said they were in business - forty years - I can see why and wondered why we had not gone before - they were busy but all customers who came in - got served and went away filled and happy ! only disappointment was no sushi - but we were filled and stuffed with what they had ! Check this place out if you have not - woulda gave eight stars - but only five - is listed LOL

Hands down, my favorite Japanese eats. When you are there you feel like family, Mr. Kuni and his brother Sato are so nice and inviting. The food is always great, its like a comfort food for me. I use them a lot for small parties. All the food is win, chicken katsu is my favorite and sashimi is always fresh. If you get there and there is a line, don't fret, their service is so fast that the turnaround time is fast too. You will get seated in no time. If you've been to a Japanese funeral, you probably had their food before, lots of locals use them for funeral catering too. Also for entertainment Sato will sometimes come to your table and do his cup trick, if not ask him to show you his cup trick. If you go on a weekend night, you will be entertained by the karaoke singers on the lounge side, the talent is hit or miss, but entertaining anyways :)

7.16.13. Tucked away in Waipahu...I had forgotten about this place! Stepping into the restaurant is like stepping into the past...vintage green booth seating, karaoke/bar in the back, traditional style japanese decor... Apparently, we used to come here for family dinners a lot in the past. But they also do take out/catering! On weekdays they open at 11, but if you want to do early pick-up (e.g., 9:00 am) they are more than willing to have that prepped for you at that time--great customer service! Very friendly, helpful and reasonably priced! Yelp 365 Challenge: #197/365

My second time here at Kuni. Love their tofu steak combos. Comes with rice, miso soup, salad, namasu, bean sprouts, cabbage. I chose fried salmon as the second choice cooked perfectly! Came with radish for dipping sauce I added shoyu and lemon to it delicious. It has a small cabbage salad with mayo sauce on it very light. Food was good amount for the price. Unlimited free hot black tea and water. Can't wait to return!

i've gone here more than a handful of times and altho it's been a few years, i always remembered that the japanese food here was good. and yup, this place is near an adult store *L* and the parking really sucks! we always went in the evenings and/ or on the weekends and you can only imagine. i used to cringe whenever we drove into the parking lot. thank goodness i wasn't the one parking. the place looked pretty old from the outside but despite it's looks, it's pretty much happening. groups and families would be waiting OUTSIDE for their chance to dine in. the place was buzzin' busy. as old as it looked outside, it was the same inside with the furniture and decor which i didn't mind too much. strange enough, i think THAT is what gave this place it's appeal. when taking our orders and serving us, the wait staff/ workers were pretty fast on their feet and got our food to our tables in a jiffy. the owner and his staff were friendly each time we went there. we always got the combo which whether it was the teri beef or chicken with tempura shrimp. along with that, you get small bowls of pickled veggies, bean sprouts, rice and miso soup. if i had to compare, the menu was similar to the japanese food at Sushi King on South King Street but for some reason, i think Kuni's tastes much better. try the tempura which is always excellent (whether it's fish, shrimp or vegetables). if sushi is your thing, they have that as well. while you enjoy your meal, don't be alarmed if you hear someone yelling/ screaming across the way on a mic. there is a karaoke lounge/ bar next door. if you like to be serenaded (badly) or entertained while you eat then maybe you should check out this place. and if not, just get some ear plugs. i'm NOT bringing mine next time.

This is a great local restaurant (the owner works with his staff in the kitchen)! They offer a diverse menu of Japanese food, from sushi and noodles, to combo meals where you can choose different meat, seafood and vegetarian options. The even have a keikis menu. I had the tempura Mahi Mahi, which came with a salad, rice, and little bowls of Japanese favorites, like bean sprouts and miso soup. There's a cocktail lounge attached to the restaurant, but I haven't had a chance to explore that part. I'll have to go back for the full experience! They share a parking lot with other restaurants and businesses, so good luck finding parking during peek dinner hours on a Friday night!

I've never eaten out in Waipahu but a coworker and I were on that side for the day and she found this place via Yelp. It was crowded and that was a sign to me that this place had to be good! And it was. We both ordered a two-choice teishoku, with mine being chicken katsu and shrimp tempura. My coworker also ordered chicken katsu, with her second dish being sashimi. We LOVED it!!! The food came out quickly, and at the end the owner/manager (?) was trying to get us to eat dessert, which they had a nice selection of. (He was also very nice and funny). I was impressed with this place, and will come back.

Service is spotty. Prices understandably go up. Portions have gotten smaller. The location of the restaurant is in a questionable spot. But at least they didn't touch the quality of the food, it's the biggest reason why I keep coming back. I usually choose from the Teishoku. It comes with bean sprouts, side dis of tsukemono, rice, miso soup, and toss green with Kuni's special sauce. You can choose between one, two, or three dishes. There are several choice to choose from. I usually choose the butter fish, beef teri, tonkatsu, or mahi mahi. I rotate my choices depending on my mood. Tips: -If you go during lunch the prices are cheaper. -The restaurant side closes from 2pm-5pm -The lounge is open from 11-midnight and serves food.

What was originally planned as a "small tasting" of items ended up being a local style Japanese smorgasbord of goodness! My mom chose Kuni's catering services after pricing around other restaurants and having a little tasting of items with my aunt a few weeks earlier. Kuni's lead cook Lisa can cook local style Japanese food like no one's business and it showed with every dish that came out. Owner Kuni-san told us to sit back, relax, and enjoy. Very nice man...He even threw in 300 Jin Dui on the house with Mom's order! We enjoyed the following dishes that Mom picked out: Nishime, Tofu Steak, Tonkatsu, Shoyu Pork, Macaroni Salad, Tossed Salad, and although we didn't order it, she even sent out some Fried Noodles and Fried Akule which were both delicious! The staff at Kuni's didn't even want to charge us for anything, so we left a hefty tip instead. Stop by if you're ever in Waipahu, Kuni's will surely satisfy your tastebuds! ALOHA!!! I love the food here! Normally when I come here I sit on the bar side with my friends. On this day it was just me and a friend that hasn't been here before so we sat on the restaurant side. I LOVE the food here! This is another place that I would eat at everyday if I could. We ordered the Family Set A. Lots of food as usual! The tofu steak is what surprised us both. We are not much for tofu, but this was REALLY yummy! It's grilled then comes out on a sizzling platter with teriyaki sauce. Smells and tastes great! My friend was becoming very nostalgic because the food reminded him of his grandmother. You can't get a better compliment that that :-)

Very average Japanese cuisine. Just a little overpriced. Shoyu pork is my favorite and the tempura is good. I prefer the tempura to be Pablo style though as most traditional Japanese restaurants serve it. Service is fast and friendly. Sato-san is very friendly and enjoys talking with the customers.

By far one of the best Places for Japanese food! We ordered tonkatsu, tempura mahi, miso butterfish and the shoyu pork which I HIGHLY recommend! Dishes are served separately so you can sample all the food that is ordered. The ice cream cake was also to die for. The wait staff was friendly and full of energy. We will definitely be back.

Kuni, for me, is definitely a "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" establishment! I literally just got home from a wonderful dinner with my family & needed to hop on Yelp & leave my review ASAP (even though I need to be putting my face on for fun night out)! My family & I decided to dine in for an early dinner (5:45pm). The parking lot offered many vacant stalls, so parking wasn't an issue today, the day after Christmas, but it can get crazy on other days. Anyway, we walked in, got a booth for 6, were served iced water, studied our menu and ordered within 5 minutes. Soon after, our waitress served us our salad, miso soup, sides, and rice. Our entrees began to filtrate our table not too long after as well. We were very glad and pleased with their operation. My nearly 3-year-old niece was definitely glad she got to eat her yummy miso soup with rice as a starter. I really loved everything--food, service, and the feeling of "home". I just really felt like I was in a positive environment (seriously). We ordered a variety of dishes... vegetable tempura (crispy and not oily... very tasty... nice cuts of veggies), tofu steak (came sizzling, very tasty), sashimi (fresh in a cute little boat), salmon multiple ways (didn't get to taste it... but my sister and mom enjoyed it), fried butterfish (brother loved), etc. Another thing that I really loved was the pickled veggies (sooooo gooooood). After we tried to finish our dinner (had to take so much of our leftovers home), a man (I'm not sure if he's the owner or what not, but he was amazing) came over to show us their collection of ice cream cakes. My sister mentioned that we're celebrating my birthday and so he recommended the watermelon slice & we went with it. Being super full, we ordered one to share. A few minutes later, the main lights go out and my thoughts were... "what is going on?! Is there a blackout?? I'm a little scared..." That same man was back at our booth and surprised us with that slice adorned with a lit candle and he sang the "Happy Birthday" song and encouraged the other diners and my family to sing along too. I surely wasn't expecting that, but it definitely put a smile on my face. Thank you, Kuni Restaurant for a great dinner and experience. It was definitely a Happy Birthday for me :)

Best Japanese- Local Restaurant in Waipahu! You can't beat an affordable price for a Teishoku style that comes with (Rice, miso soup, tossed salad with a choice of kunis special dressing or 1,000 isle, moyashi & tsukemono) for roughly starting @ $10! I really love their Tofu steak! Tonkatsu, CKatsu, Butterfish, Beef Teri, Tokyo teriyaki Rib eye steak in a sizzling hot plate! I love their Pork Tofu Sukiyaki like Nabe style. But this kine is super good! Soup is really something good and of course it comes with veggies, choice of meat and tofu. For desserts, Sato San likes (Mr. Water Man) He likes to do his water cup trick show. Lol. Make sure you don't get wet. There are water melon pie and all kine flavored ice cream. It's a homemade kine Ice cream from a guy named Rob. I like the green tea, Maunakea Haupia, tango/mango and water melon! Also, there is a bar next door, anybody can sing Karaoke for $1.00! But please make keep it down low. Not too loud please. You can some pupus at the bar and watch football game or talk stories while having a cocktail. If you didn't know, you can also do take out order. A choice of Bento A-D!b and other t/out it's all up to you. And if you want Kunis to cater to you then we can do that for you. Catering is available with 20 or 25 min ppl upon order. Food is really yummy and I mean trust me when I said that! Funeral services, BD party, holidays dinner are some of the most popular occasions. But anything can do!

Bah! Humbug! I hate to be a Scrooge at this time of year, but I feel duty-bound to forewarn less wary diners of the perils that could befall them in this time of carefree merriment. I had the 3-choice teishoku from this place for dinner the other night. Miso butterfish, sashimi, and chicken teri for $27.45 + $2.75 extra for the butterfish. The butterfish was NOT "misoyaki". As in marinated overnight if not for days in miso, sugar, sake, and mirin then broiled until marinade caramelizes on outside and center is just cooked through. This butterfish was over FRIED to dryness with a thick, brown, cloyingly sweet, miso sauce applied afterward. Onaji dewa arimasen. The sashimi was 9 slivers of low-grade ahi that equate to 3 pieces of sashimi anywhere else. The lack of color (i.e. quality) was not disguised by the red neon "Open" sign under which the waitress seated us. The accompanying shredded daikon was waterlogged. As with the butterfish, the chicken teri was over-cooked to dryness and toughness with an overly-sweet teri sauce applied afterward. My tooth hurts again just thinking about it. Service rough. Waitress carelessly spilled the namasu juice on the table, and served the tsukemono dish stacked on the moyashi in the underlying dish. ?! Then the manager brought out my Mom's udon, and promptly spilled the soup on the table. Neither batted an eye. If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population of Japanese-restaurant pretender's and wannabe's. This place may still have a pulse---store-bought watermelon ice cream pie thing pretty good ($7.25 for a small slice), and daughter liked the juice-less namasu---but that's about it. Or maybe it's as Tiny Tim thought that his presence in church would help others remember God and His loving kindness. Uh...Thank you Kuni...for your sincere efforts to please; short though those efforts may fall. God bless us everyone!

I am always satisfied and extremely stuffed when I leave here. Got my normal chicken cutlet. Can't go wrong with a $10 meal that comes with a bunch of sides! The staff was awesome, we took up four tables and we all got our dinner quick and fresh!

Not so memorable. I would've rather have gone to jack in the box. Can't seem to force myself to like this place. If you're starving and needed to eat and this place is the only one available then I guess you're plays. Food is okay but nothing special.

Had an itch for some Japanese grinds, so we decided to scratch that itch by going to Kuni. We were seated pretty fast for a Saturday night. Place reminded me of Japanese restaurants back in the day (mom and pop kine). Real layed back. Ordered the 3 choice - Teri chicken, shrimp tempura and tonkatsu. My other half ordered the chicken tofu. It was all good! The shrimp was pretty big too! The portions of the 3 choice was plenty, where most Japanese restaurants one of those would be one plate by its self. Service was good. By the way had this one Japanese man working the front idk if he's the owner or what, but he gets it done and he's on it!! Do I hear I returning customer? Yuuup!! Right hea!!!

Ventured out of town and into Waipahu for dinner at Kuni tonight. I must admit, I can be somewhat of a "town snob"....but being here brought me back to my roots. Simple & Local. Loved It. I used to come here as a child and was reminiscing the entire time at dinner tonight. Good Times. Waipahu has some great restaurants! Anyway, I ordered the Combo with three choices for $23. So worth it because my leftovers will be my lunch tomorrow (heehee). Must Have: *Tofu Steak*. Delicious! Everyone agreed. It's Teri/BBQ flavored presented on a platter and grilled like steak but much healthier. I've tried re-creating this dish, but to no avail. It's a perfect vegetarian option. My 2nd choice: Fried Mahi with Miso Sauce. Loved this since I've never had Mahi with Miso! 3rd choice: Shrimp Tempura, of course. Good, nothing special. Overall pretty big portions so you will need a "to-go" container. Dinner came with Miso soup, bean sprouts, salad, and a side of namasu. Service was so fast. We couldn't keep up with our waitress. She was excellent and so "on it." Thank You! Dessert: A Slice Of Coffee Ice Cream Cake with an Oreo Crust. It was so cute when the owner (?) came over and playfully cut and served our cake! Very cool. I like seeing that. We walked out of Kuni happy we picked that restaurant. It's so nice to eat at a great, local-style restaurant. Makes you feel....At home.

We've been coming to Kuni's since I was verrry little. Sato, Kuni's brother, still does the water flip trick for me...and it gets me every time! My family has long since loved coming here for lunch and dinner. My grandma and grandpa would always let me and my sister choose our combinations, and I love that the food and flavor hasn't changed in twenty years! I still order my usual combo: yakitori sticks and shrimp tempura! Every combo comes with salad (with the best dressing I have yet to figure out what it is), miso soup, bean sprouts, and a little dish of tsukemono. If I'm extra hungry I'll order a side of cold tofu and namasu, and trade with others on the table for a piece of their tofu steak, sashimi, or tonkatsu. I couldn't tell you first-hand how the rest of the menu is, but everything in the restaurant smells great; if I was a little more adventurous I would stray from my norm, but I'm a creature of habit and don't like change. Kuni and Sato have always staffed a great bunch of people. They are warm and welcoming! I will always enjoy coming here for the food and fellowship!

Boycott this place people. Apparently they think it's ok to cover up for the crimes of some coward wife beating cop. They refuse to file a complaint against the costumed criminal and they refuse to cooperate with media in dealing with the crime that happened on their property. They most likely were threatened by some coward cops and if so they should speak up about that. Have some integrity you guys, do the right thing, domestic violence should never be covered up.

Not the same as the old days back in the 80's... This was my family's favorite restaurant but after eating here for lunch today, it's not the same. Tempura and Tonkatsu is not the same!! Parking is a huge problem and service personnel seemed like they don't care because of lack of training in service.

To My Lover....Kuni, You know you got me wrapped around your little finger. You play the bad Boy persona well. It doesn't matter how bad you mistreat me I keep on coming back for your good lovin. It doesn't matter that beautiful half naked women are always found around you, how you sometimes neglect me at my weakest hour, or the fact I must be subjected to off key screeching ahem singing while I enjoy such a glorious meal. (Foreplay) The namasu that you offer and whatever that homemade dressing that goes on that salad is another reason I can't stop seeing you. . It' s a great beginning for what bigger pleasure is about to come my way. (The Loving) I thought for sure that I disliked tofu until you shown me otherwise. Out it came sizzling, doused in sauce, and oozing with flavor. One bite I knew I would be coming back for more, more, more! Your sashimi though I noticed is less you have not risked it's quality and I thank you for this. You also never fail me with your shrimp tempura or the sizzling ribeye. (The Climax) But the biggest reason I put up with you, is that you carry my all time favorite ice cream pie from RB's , watermelon flavor. Kuni's I will never grow tire of you as long as you keep on giving me your magical lovin. One of your many lovers, Kim C. *Location, Parking, & Hours: This place is located by an adult store called Suzie's. The neighborhood seems a bit shady so lock your car and hide your valuables. My car has never been broken into but my mother was forced into giving her bag a block or two down. Sometimes this area is busy and I park across the street at 7 eleven. Hours- on the restaurant side Lunch 11am to 2pm. (It's a bit cheaper if you come at lunch) Dinner is from 5pm to 9pm. There is a lounge next door that is open from 11am to midnight and they serve the full menu. Every time I have come I've only seen curvaceous women bartenders who are wearing tight clothing and baring cleavage. A handful of them have a pretty face, they are all nice and have great customer service. In the lounge there is free Karaoke which you can hear in the restaurant. Sometimes it's a nice serenade other times it's a drunkard screaming full blast. In the restaurant there are two pictures of artfully drawn top bare women posted on the walls so situate your children looking towards the kitchen. My oldest asked me the first time we ate here why there are naked women posted on the walls and I told him it's art. That's the best I could do at the time and now I just make sure he's facing the other way. Food: They serve delicious Japanese style meals with some local dishes. My family usually gets the set menus that serve 2 people. But it feeds and satisfies my 8 year old son and my 19 month old. Sometimes we get a side of chicken katsu or teriyaki chicken (sauce on side) if my oldest son says he's extra hungry. Posted below are some of my favorite dishes that I get here. A picture of the namasu- yelp.com/biz_photos/kuni… A picture of the tofu steak- yelp.com/biz_photos/kuni… A picture of the ribeye steak- yelp.com/biz_photos/kuni… A picture of teriyaki chicken and sashimi- yelp.com/biz_photos/kuni… A picture of RB's Pies on the left is watermelon and on the right is mocha- yelp.com/biz_photos/kuni… Service: on the restaurant side Sometimes it's awesome and sometimes they are super busy and they forget. To refill water, bring utensils, check on you. Don't be afraid to stop someone. Despite the inconsistent service the food is always delicious. This is my favorite place to go on the Leeward side if I'm craving Japanese food.

My favorite Japanese Restaurant on the Leeward side. Tied for 1st on the island with Tokoname in Kailua. I grew up with this place and it hasn't changed other than it now being smoke free. The little things about this place that I wouldn't want changed: 1. Hearing the drunk Karaoke singers 2. Having my drink flipped over by Kuni's brother. 3. Receiving the FASTEST service on the island. 4. Seeing the same workers. 5. Walking into the bar to use the ghetto restroom. 6. Kuni's brother selling us on the ice cream, and we reply "We're too full." 7. The best teriyaki sauce! MAHALO KUNI'S! Too bad I live on the other side of the island now.

Great Japanese food and laid back atmosphere. I always come with my family (7 of us) and this is my go-to place to bring out-of-town guests to. I'm hungry just thinking about their salad!!! It's so 'ono.

Food was okay. food was classic japanese cuisine. i had the nabe, a little salty . what bothered me the most was that it was half bar / half restaurant so it got a little noisy .

So, I am all about the quality of the food and beverages. Service is real important, but I can overlook a pathetic server if what they serve is Devine! Well, I like this place. I like the service too. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired, but the servers are nice and more importantly, the beers are freaking cold! I'm not talking chilly, I mean bone chilling frostbite cold. So cold the bottle doesn't sweat. Colder than an A/C on high; colder than a dip in the ocean during a windstorm. I like ice cold beers and this place gets it. So, overlook the atmosphere and the other imperfect amenities and enjoy beer as cold as licking an ice cold light post in a Northeastern winter : Go watch the movie A Christmas Story if you don't get my last comment. Enjoy!

I've been going to this restaurant for as long as I can remember! I always stick to my usual which is their Teishoku, you can choose from various food items including my favorites: Chicken Teri, Sashimi, Shrimp Tempura. Other favorites among my family members are their Beef Teri and Steak Tofu. Along with having your entree choices, you also get it with rice, Miso soup, Salad (dressing is the best part!), bean sprouts, and a cabbage dish. Once you place your order, your food comes out very promptly. Also, they have ice cream cakes from RB's - watermelon is my favorite! The service is always great here, and although I've never been, I know they have a Karaoke bar next door that also plays any sports games if you're looking for a hang out spot for that.

We tried out Kuni's last night for dinner. Met our friends around 6:30pm on a Monday night. I was surprised at how busy it was! The parking lot was also busy since there are a bunch of places to eat in that area. Luckily our friends arrived a little earlier so they got a table right away. When we walked in there was only 1 table left. Not too sure if they take reservations, but didn't seem like it. The atmosphere is very simple... very old and a bit strange since there was Karaoke in the bar adjacent to the restaurant. We sat towards the back of the restaurant so there was no door in between us and the singing and it got a bit loud as the night progressed. Food was pretty good! I ordered the 2 choice combo (about $22)- tofu steak and sashimi. Each of the dishes were okay. Fish didn't taste too fresh. I don't think I would order the same thing if I came back. Boyfriend ordered the Tokyo teriyaki steak teishoku (about $33), which came with tempura and sashimi. He enjoyed the steak and I got to taste a few pieces. It was delicious!!! I think his steak was the highlight of the meal. Some negatives: I thought that the prices were very high. Soft drinks weren't refillable. Miso soup was bland. Overall, it was an okay experience.

I've been here less than a handful of times, but each time was pleasant. I love the tofu steak :D The last time I went, I ordered a two choice plate which came out to around what? 13? 16? That's kinda pricey for me :( I got the shoyu pork and chicken katsu. Both tasted AWESOME! It doesn't only come with rice. They give you salad, bean sprouts and miso soup! Each choice comes with shredded cabbage with some sort of dressing on there as well. I was very happy that I could bring my daughter here to eat. The waitress we had was very friendly, engaging in conversation whenever she came by to refill our waters and whatnot. I saw the Watermelon Ice Cream..thing. It tasted like bubble gum kind of watermelon. It was much too sweet for me. I wish I had gotten the Green Tea Ice Cream slice of pie instead. I don't like the parking lot. It's old, there's pot holes and it's just so small. I'm surprised we got the parking we had. It' located near Suzie's Adult Warehouse..that made me giggle lol. The restroom is located in the bar side of the restaurant. I think it's neat that they have a separate area, but at the same time it sucks if I had to take my daughter to the restroom, I don't want her around that :( Good food, great staff, junk parking :( They take card and cash I think? I will go back..when I have the money to spend! lol

A visitor to the area may feel out of place when stepping through the doors of this restaurant and bar but do not be dissuaded. The owner/manager is exceptionally welcoming with a super sense of humor. When in doubt as to what to order due to the expanse of the menu, throw yourself onto the mercy of the wait staff or manager. Low prices and tasty home cooking is the order of the day. Make sure you are proficient with chopsticks or bring your own flatware to avoid embarrassment.

I love Kunis!!!! I've been coming here since I was preschool. I've tried the butterfish misoyaki, sashimi, teri beef, yakitori, shrimp tenpura, and the tofu steak. Miso Butterfish, I.M.O, is pretty good. Some people don't like butterfish, like my bf, but if you do you should try it at least once. Sashimi, in all honesty, is NOT fresh. The teri beef, yakitori, and shrimp both my mom and bf love. I LOVE the tofu steak. It's especially good when you're trying to get your intake of protein. **Eating tofu/soy beans may decrease your chances of getting breast cancer because of the estrogen. :]** ( I only say MAY since I'm not a doctor). The teriyaki sauce on the tofu steak is so delicious, but the next time i go I need to ask them for extra teriyaki sauce. I love their small sides too. They give miso soup, salad with a ginger dressing, bean sprouts, and tsukemono. They recently renovated their chairs and tables. party of four probably won't fit on the tables next to the window so i recommend you asking for a table in the middle. My parents, bf and I had a hard time eating dinner. My elbow ended up in his face, literally and my parents ended up bumping elbows as well. Also, they have Karaoke where the bathrooms are. So if you don't mind the singing then hele on over to Kunis :]

One of my regrets in life is not eating at Kuni sooner - it took me 19 years before I was introduced to this Japanese-food eatery! A friend of mine invited me to eat dinner here once and I have been hooked ever since. This place is not the most visually appealing - it is very dark inside. It looks like it has been there for decades (probably has) since it is located in an older building and the booths looks like they have seen some years. However, whenever I have eaten here, the booths have always been clean and the seats, no matter how long they have been used, seem to still have life (their seats are not flat and still have padding; I've eaten at restaurants where the seat just has no life in them at all so when you sit down, you feel the wooden bench underneath). Whenever I have gone to Kuni, I have always received good service, sometimes from the owner himself! They are always friendly, courteous, and have that sense of urgency that I love (especially when I am starving, seeing that the food will come out as soon as possible makes me a happy customer...the only thing to make me happier is to get my food). When the owner is the waiter, he always makes small talk and up-sales the ice cream cakes they offer. He is very charismatic. He even remembers the regulars; he knew my order by the third time I went in (I'm pretty predicable with what I order at specific restaurants). The food may not be exactly gourmet food (it's not like going to Morimoto's), but for affordable and delicious local-style Japanese food, Kuni is the place to go. I always get the teishoku (a complete meal). You can get the two choice teishoku for less than $16. Normally, everyone I go with gets the teishoku because it is such a deal. It comes with a big pot of white rice (at least two cups of rice inside); this way you can eat as much rice as you want. The meal also comes with tsukemono, bean sprouts, salad with a miso dressing, and miso soup. These little side dishes are all very good, but my favorite is the salad with miso dressing. It is light, but a more liquid-y dressing. They usually do not over-dress the salad either. Their miso soup is pretty good too! A side note - the dishes that the food comes in are the usual Japanese-y bowls and plates, but they are super cute. It never feels like a Japanese meal unless they come in those decorated dishes. As my entrees, I usually get the tofu steak and beef teriyaki. The tofu steak is a whole slab of tofu (its the size of the tofu that you can buy at a store), they cut it into slices, slather some teriyaki sauce on it, and cook it on a small cast iron dish (to warm up the tofu and get the outside a bit hard like grilled tofu). The teriyaki sauce tastes like yoshida sauce, but it definitely is not the typical teriyaki sauce I find at other restaurants. The sauce adds the flavor to the tofu. Plus, the tofu steak comes out sizzling on the cast iron dish. The beef teriyaki is a tender, thin piece of beef that has the classic grill marks on it and cooked with the teriyaki sauce. I have no idea what they use in this sauce, but it tastes different from the sauce they use for the tofu steak (my tastes buds may be playing games with me...), but it is still delicious. I have tried the teriyaki chicken, but I wasn't as impressed. I think the chicken was not as tasty/flavorful as the beef, even with the teriyaki sauce. My friends have tried other items on the menu. One friend said that the butterfish was more on the dry side. Another friend thought the sashimi was delicious and pretty affordable to boot! Overall, I like Kuni because it is good Japanese food (probably not authentic, but if it tastes this good, who cares? I know I'm not going to authentic food but for good food in general) that is affordable and filling (I normally waddle out of the restaurant because I am so full). Wish there was more parking (the lot in front of the restaurant is kind of small, especially since there are other eateries in the same building) and that there was a Kuni in town. Until then, I guess I have to make my journey to Waipahu when I am craving their food.

Food tastes re-cooked. Miso butterfish was just the fish with sauce slapped on top. Disappointed. Probably not eating there again. Desserts are good though..That's the only thing That I would eat again.

This place is a fantastic hole in the wall joint. Great service drinks and exceptional Japanese food at reasonable prices. A must place to go. The locals are friendly as well. Tempura is light crisp and wonderful not that heavy greasy thick stuff that is an embarrassment to have the same name. This good rates as good as I have eaten in Tokyo. A must. The only reason this doesn't have a 5 th star is the dark and dated interior.

Kuni's may not seem like much from the outside, but they are an excellent little Japanese restaurant. The quality of food and portions are great, service is very good, but the decor is dated. Trust me, you won't notice once they bring your food out :)

Any place that can cook tofu in a way that I am not jealous of someone eating steak is seriously 5 stars in my book. When we arrived at 2pm, we found that they were closed but as we were about to get into our car to leave the waitress came out side and asked if we wanted to come in. This was great since we have always been told that the shrimp tempura here was really good and was craving. Mealwise I had the 3 choice combination teishoku. My choices for the teishoku were the Shrimp Tempura, Sashimi and Tofu Steak. The Shrimp Tempura was nice and golden, not at all oily and the breading was just right. The Sashimi was super fresh and nice arranged. The Tofu Steak was winners, it came out on a sizzling plater with a special sauce. I even let the wife try the Tofu Steak and she ate it which is shocking since she usually doesn't like tofu. The meal also came with the usual rice, miso soup, tossed green salad and moyashi (bean sprouts). .

Been coming here since i was a little girl! The quality has not changed and the service is still welcoming after all these years (: Well since Im a big girl now I came here for beers n dinner. I ordered the Tofu Steak and Chicken Katsu Teishoku (about $18) and two Asahi. Tofu steak is served on a sizzling hot plate mmm...They never screw up on the katsu... sauce is in a bottle on the table. Rice is served in a large bowl (mo betta!) Only thing I did not like was the tsukemono (not very vinegar-y and a little rubbery??) Dessert!! They serve RBs ice cream... Sato-san (manager/owner) convinced me to order the watermelon ice cream cake (looks and tastes like watermelon!!, oreo crust). Hes so sweet and cool ^-^ Love you, Kuni!!!!!
