Where is everyone's standards? You cannot give it more than 3 stars just because the food is cheap. It's cheap, low quality food, and barely edible sushi. If I was on the mainland, I would probably go to this place. But, you are in Kauai where there is fresh fish, tons of sushi restaurants, and higher quality fish at a Safeway. First clue should be that it is in an outdoor shopping mall. Second, only high schoolers go to this place because it's cheap. If you want high quality sushi and are willing to pay for quality, go to Kintaro. If you are in the "fast food" mood, then go ahead and punish your stomach at Genki Sushi. While it's called Genki Sushi, it sure didn't make me feel

This is my new favorite Japanese fast food restaurant. It wasn't to my liking at first when I tried the one in Oahu several years ago. I'm glad I tried the one in Kauai. Service is awesome, but the wait is long. Tip: order your items off the menu so it comes fresh and hot to your table :) Must tries include garlic ahi, spicy tuna bowl, agedashi tofu, and soft shell crab!!!

I have to give this place two stars for customer service. The waitresses work really hard. As far as eating here, I don't think I'll be coming back. The food is good but to get your food that you order is a long wait. Although the conveyor belt is filled with sushi, salad, and desserts, most of them are things you don't want to eat. But...............waiting for your food to be made and it's taking a long time, you tend to get desperate and want to take a plate from the belt. The prices are really expensive. My son took a cupcake which cost $3.95. It wasn't worth being on a silver plate. If you like sushi and want to eat it for lunch, go to sushi Katsu @ tip top motel. They have better options, quality is better, and cheaper prices.

Only putting 1 because I can't give it a zero star. This rating is only for customer service on the phone as we were so put off with the way they handled the phone call that we didn't end up eating there. I usually enjoy Genki sushi in the mainland and even in Oahu. My husband and I were planning on trying there location in Lihue, Kauai for lunch so I called ahead of time to make sure they were open. Had a rude lady answer the phone. She sounded like she didn't have time to talk on the phone and annoyed that I called. She also hung up the phone without any acknowledgement. Needless to say we will be taking our money elsewhere.

Sorry in advance for being so negative. Usually I like to look beyond certain things and only see the good side however.... So it starts like this; we're Genki fans and especially LOVE the spicy bombs, sometimes ordering up to 4 plates of that spicy deliciousness! Mmmm! So we're spending the weekend in Kauai and I'm ono for it. We arrive at Genki Sushi and have to wait a ridiculous amount of time to get in. Once inside and seated, we see a lot of empty space. WTH?! So we order our usual faves and their OK. The thing I had the most trouble with was this Genki was RATCHET FILTHY... and no, not just dirty from a busy shift! I'm talking flies around the conyeor belt, filth and mold on the walls, floors, ceiling... EVERYWHERE! Seriously, does Genki not have standards? My question is how in the world could this Genki get a "Green Pass"? I would NOT recommend this Genki! Disappointed.....

The service was horrible this evening. We waited 20 minutes while the employees walked back and forth past dirty tables. Finally the Supervisor started cleaning off one table, but moved SO SLOW. The Staff in general seemed to be in slow motion tonight. Placed our order and got part of it. Finished eating what we received and after 25 mins., even though we told the staff several times that we didn't get all our food; gave up waiting for the rest. Genki Sushi at this location used to be really good; but has been getting worse and worse with each visit. Even the Supervisor didn't seem surprised when I was paying the bill and told her we didn't receive the rest of our order or how bad tonight's service was.

We eat here all the time and found out they're closing for 3 months beginning may 1 for renovations which apparently can't come sooner because as we were finishing our meal today, the biggest roach I've seen in my life walked out from the kitchen. The worst part? After it rolled on its back and got stuck, as we were trying to tell someone, a waitress beat us to telling her, and KICKED IT UNDER THE FREEZER. No wait, it gets worse. It never came out from the freezer, and as we were leaving, my husband stepped on another one, the same size, about the size of a nigiri, 3 inches long, 1 inch thick, it had been under our stroller!! MAJOR ROACH PROBLEM. Omg. I still have the heebie jeebies from lunch.

Sushis decent and convenient that its in the kukui grove center, service could be better, slow at times also and at times servers not very attentive, there were times where food on conveyer belt was dry or rice was hard.... TIP: always order off the menu so its fresh to your table

  • Nali M.

genki sushi is my last resort. i only eat here if my mom says she's treating! most days, it's not really busy and you can just grab a table. some days (like on the weekend) it's a bit busier and you'll have to wait a while to get a table. service is okay at most. they definitely don't go out of the way to do anything spectacular. definitely order from the waitress/waiter. it comes out fresh if you do. i really don't like grabbing off the belt unless i'm sitting right where it's coming out. then i know that they just set the plate down. price is alright, however, if you grab too many of those black plates, it sure can add up quick!!

I so wish I was in Lihue right now...my stomach is growling as I think of how happy my stomach gets at Genki! On my second trip to Kauai, my family and I stumbled across this sushi restaurant while we were looking for the sandwich shop across the way. Now every time we visit Kauai (about once or twice a year) we stop in whenever we drive through Lihue for a "quick" lunch. The setup of the restaurant is pay by the plate with each plate usually consisting of an order of sushi or some appetizer. The more complex the dish, the more expensive the plate. At the end of your feast, the waitress will count up your plates, hand you the receipt that you pay at the register by the door. Most of the sushi goes around the restaurant on a conveyor belt (these are usually the more popular rolls and appetizers- edamame, side salad, inari, tuna roll) and you order the hot menu items and the other sushi rolls from the waitress. There's fountain drinks available but the waitresses tend to be busy with orders so they are not on top of the sodas as much. I have gotten into the habit of just refilling it on my own and they haven't seemed to be bothered by it. One year as a joke, I challenged my younger brother to collect as many plates as he could. Challenge accepted. After roughly a half an hour of constant sushi shoveling down his throat, he emerged with a collection of 16 plates. I thought it was hilarious. My mom, on the other hand, who had to pay the bill was pissed but it's a story that we tell to this day. The plates are relatively cheap. As long as you are not getting the higher end rolls or dishes you can walk out with a bloated belly with a bill far under any other Japanese restaurant on the island or the mainland.

THIS IS A MUST SEE! The most run down restaurant in the USA. every seat cushion is covered with tons of silver duct tape. the laminate is peeling off and broken on the booths. If they let the public money making parts of this place run down this bad think about what the kitchen and food must be like? I've been to some depressed areas but no owner would allow their restaurant to degrade to this level,

    (1)
  • ImLookingAt U.

It's about 2.5 stars. It's a chain fast food sit down sushi restaurant. They have tons of choices and prices range from less than $2 to $4.95 for a plate of 2 piece sushi or 4 piece rolls. Some are good and some are not good. If you study the menu, you will be ok. It was way to cold in there.

    (2)
  • Robbie J.

I go here a lot. The food isn't as authentic as I thought it would be, but still taste good. The service is great we go there so much many of the waitresses know our name. I think the only problem would be the service being slow, but if don't blame them with that many people I would be slow too. But overall a great place to catch lunch with family or friends

    (4)
  • JB R.

Greasy, simple, good. Staff is friendly, you pay by the plate (type). You can grab from the conveyor or order fresh. We ordered fresh. They accommodated requests without any problems.

    (3)
  • B. J.

We've been going to this place forever and it has slowly gone downhill. If you eat the food off the belt, its going to be 1 star all the way: flies land on it, it dries out, the rice gets hard. It just sits on the belt until it fossilizes....definitely a paleontologists dream come true. Seriously though, most of the time our family goes here we feel sick afterward. The whole place is dirty, so its not surprising. If you feel like risking getting sick, just make sure you order off the menu, no matter what it is, and even if you see what you want on the belt, still order it fresh, then you might get 2 or 3 star food. 4 stars to the staff who usually really try hard to do their best for you while running all over the place trying to accommodate everyone, as this place is usually really busy because its not expensive as far as sushi goes. Still, you definitely get what you pay for here.

Ok, so if I really dislike a place I normally don't ever go back to visit but because my friends that I were visiting while on-island wanted to go, I figured what the heck right? Well, I'm sad to say that nothing much has changed and it feels like the service really has gone further downhill which is pretty pathetic! My main complaints about this place this time around, center on the piss poor service. We were seated fairly quickly once we checked in but after that it all went downhill. Our server, a young male was just horrendous PERIOD. Somebody should talk to this guy about his attitude because he just acts like he doesn't want to be there serving customers. It took us all of 20 minutes to be given water and drink orders to be taken, and equally long before he even asked if we wanted to place an order for anything(there are a few things that need to be ordered that don't come through the conveyor belt regularly). When we asked for things it was like pulling teeth and he either gave the most sneering responses or acted like we were bothering him. Well, I got news for you son, you're a server at a restaurant so it'd pay to be more hospitable. What took the cake for me is that when he came around to ask if we needed anything else after a long absence, he sneered at me when I asked for a refill on my water. He never returned after that which is just as well since I was well beyond irritated with our service. I'm glad that the girl that took his place seemed to notice that our service was pretty sh***y and gave us FAR better service after that, regularly checking up on us to see that we were tended to. The junk part is I think the other people being served by that piss poor kid also got equally bad service too, which this poor girl had to follow-up on. Now don't get me wrong, I know this is just Genki Sushi and not some up-scale sushi bar on Oahu but get real... I get that the servers and restaurant folks are people too but if you're having a bad day, take a break or ask to go home rather than taking it out on the customers. If it weren't for the girl that served us at the end, I'd have given this place 1-star and left absolutely no tip for the horrible service we were given. A friend had commented to me that she hates eating here and I can see why. With service this poor, who'd want to come here unless they were out-voted! Hopefully this improves A LOT when I'm back again, if I come back!

Good selections for carnivores, raw fish lovers, and vegetarians! The novelty here is mainly with the conveyor belt, kids will LOVE this. However, order most of your items fresh from the servers, it is where the better selections are. Vegetarians will adore the fried zucchini, miso soup, avocado roll, karage tofu, cold tofu and udon noodle bowls. Kids adore the the miso soup, french fries, and edamame. I liked the (freshly ordered) Cali roll, spicy salmon roll, poke bowl, fried squid, salmon sushi, and the sodium bomb-spam sushi. Consider this a place to try some different things, if you don't have sushi joints near you. This will not make you happy if you have a favorite sushi place on a coast, but will suffice for families and those in a hurry. Soda is free refills. Entertainment consists of awkward teens on dates. Relax, it's island time.

  • Amanda A.

Well I don't really eat sushi. I'm one of those people that hangout with sushi lovers so that's the reason why I eat at genki. Thank goodness for chicken karaage. This particular Genki isn't the greatest. The food is a little pricier than other sushi joints and the quality isn't there. I don't eat sushi but I can tell the different between good and bad. The sushi just looks like the cheap stuff you find at a gas station convenience store or something. The service is okay but the waiters all are young and don't quite understand the difference between good customer service and going overboard to try and get a good tip. I also think their portion sizes are awful. The garlic chicken for like $4 and you only get like 3 little pieces, oh heck no.

Cheap, decent sushi. The older lady that works there is RUDE. She yelled at me because I asked why she told me it was going to be a 15 minute wait but we were there for 30. Overall, service is 1 star and food is 3. .

  • Shauna S.

Eh. Not very good. We though we'd be getting a decent serving of sushi or sashimi instead the best rolls were those that were deep fried. I think we grabbed a deep fried California roll which was good. As was the spicy tempura roll. The salmon sashimi didn't taste fresh and mostly tasted like lemon. The inari was decent. Maybe we just came on an off day or something but anything that was too be enjoyed needed to be deep fried otherwise it was bland and tasteless. Or it took on the taste of it's garnish.

Ate here twice in two weeks. Great filling food. Nothing I did not like, all good. Not quality, but quantity. Easy to spend between 30 and 40 dollars between two people for lunch. Wouldn't pay these prices at home but this is Hawaii.

Horrible experience, never coming here again! We had to settle for Genki since the other sushi places we originally wanted to eat at didn't open til dinner time. Having been to MANY other Genki's before, I was very disappointed. We came around lunch time and there was a wait; our wait was approximately 25 minutes. My family and I were ok on the wait, especially since we were really craving some sushi! However, 25 minutes passed by... then another 45 minutes passed by... and still, our table was still not ready. I asked the host, nicely, how long more would our table take. He replied in a very rude manner. All in all our 25 minute wait turned to a 75 minute wait. If we knew the wait was going to be more than doubled our wait time, we wouldn't have eaten here. Anyway! So we walk into the restaurant to see more than 2 booths empty, but not yet cleaned. BUT two employees on the side just talking story. Waited 5 minutes to order our drinks. Another 5 for them to arrive. I asked for straws and our server practically threw them at me. I was starving by then. Our server moved so slow and took such a long time to take our order. I would've grabbed plates off the belt but there wasn't any! Overall, I would not come here again. Compared to other Genki's on the other islands, this one is a very big disappointment!

  • Tlisa A.

Ha! If I could, I wouldn't give this place any stars, that's how bad our experience was today. Their worker was rude and very unpleasent. So we arrived around 11 a.m. and there still two booths open and a lot of bar room, when we walked in the waitress didn't acknowledged we walked in, usually they say "irashai masen" and after standing for 5 mins looked at us and said "oh you can sit where ever you like." Sure she was fast to take our order, but we waited nearly 20 mins after that and nothing got delivered. I ordered a spicy ahi bowl which is fast and easy to put together and normally takes 5 minutes to come out, well the table next to us ordered teriyaki bowls, which require deep frying and that came out before our orders. We then proceeded to leave because we were on a time limit the waitress told me I have an attitude, no girl YOU have the attitude problem, didn't you know you work in a customer service related workplace, if you don't enjoy your job DON'T work there.

I have never been to Genki Sushi in Honolulu, and coming here to Kauai for the weekend is a bit interesting. Decided to try it and I was pleasantly surprised. Japanese cuisine has gotten expensive over the years, and I can say Genki helped out with the $$ part of it. Very budget friendly ,especially on Kauai where everything is on the rise. The sushi itself isn't that bad, as some reviews have suggested, but still it was tasty. Not mind blowing, but you get the idea. Go here for budget friendly Japanese. If you want high end, then that's cool too. A hidden gem for all local Kauai peeps.

  • Blaine H.

A smaller sushi place that can be noisy, if you want food during peak hours, and may require a 10- to 15-minute wait, if you want a booth. It is, never the less, a great place for some great sushi and tempura. The decor is basic and clean, and the staff is friendly. They can get a little overwhelmed when there is a full house, but they cope admirably. Table turnover is quick, but you should plan to dine during non-peak hours. The sushi is imaginative (green bean, tuna bomb, tempura, et al) and colorful, as well as tasty. Whatever you choose to try, it is almost impossible to go wrong--unless you have seafood allergies. LOL. With a relaxed atmosphere, fun staff, and great food, it is an island institution.

Best Genki Sushi I've been to in country. Came to eat here 3 times for quick bite meals while shopping in the area over the week I stayed at Kuaui. Genki Sushi places usually have sub par sushi that just goes around the conveyor belt for hours on end. After sitting at a scenic spot the first time around, we learned that if you don't want the choice stuff snatched from you, sit right where the sushi comes out from. Yeah, you can order what you want by placing in an order and have it served to you, but that takes away from the novelty of this place. The sushi was the freshest of any Genki Sushi I've been to... not really saying much, but is equivalent to decent freshness everywhere else. It's location within the only mainland designed shopping center on the island is a huge plus. I went to Macy's, Gamestop, and Walmart. This is the center of commerce on the island. I had no wait times for tables. The wait staff was on top of refilling waters and checking on customers. Kids comprise the waitstaff, but it's a good starting position for entry level workers to the workforce. Eating here you have to know where you're eating. Don't come in expecting the best sushi in the world. You come in for the novelty of the way the sushi comes in on a color pricing system of plates, and it coming out on conveyor belts. It's also the down to earth, working class atmosphere.

  • Kaileen Y.

Genki Sushi is nowhere near high quality. But, it's not horrible either. As mentioned by other yelpers, this place is also my last resort for sushi. The only time I agree to eat here is if I'm really hungry & craving sushi while at the mall. I usually order the spicy tuna bowl or the garlic salmon. the crab mayo's pretty good too or the mussels. I hardly take the plates from the conveyor belt just because usually most of that sushi has been sitting there for hours on end. I would highly recommend that you place an order with the wait staff if you want your food fresh. speaking of the wait staff, the customer service is okay. but, most definitely not outstanding.

Tourist perspective: fun place to eat sushi (revolving sushi bar is super cool), with mediocre/decent sushi (although not the best I've had). The usual items - salmon, tuna, etc - were fresh and tasty. Would have liked to have seen more items on the sushi belt; seemed fairly limited, although you can order from the waitress (but where is the fun in that?). Overall, a cool little place for sushi - an don't forget the revolving sushi bar!

Everyone's been saying it and I'm going to say it again. This is sushi on a budget. You get what you pay for and that's cheap sushi. It's actually not BAD but it'll have you wondering why you order so much when it's just mediocre. Oh wait, it's cheap. Booths around a conveyor belt of sushi that's been sitting out for a while is not exactly the most ideal way to consume the Japanese delicacies but if you can't afford sushi boats, i guess you have to go with the conveyor belt. Agedashi tofu was actually pretty good. one of the better dishes. since you have to order this one, it didn't have time to sit out on the conveyor belt. salmon sashimi...nothing special. Toss green salad's quality actually surprised us. It was fresh. Very fresh. No browning or yellow leaves - just pure green crispy lettuce. A welcome contrast to the sushi quality. Soft shell crab was one of the better rolls we had. Since it was made to order, the crispiness was still present. Garlic salmon I'd say was my favorite of them all. It's hard to explain, but it's pretty good. We ordered a few of these after trying the first one. Ahi poke, Spicy tuna, and volcano roll...i don't quite remember which means they weren't very impressionable. Onion salmon is legit just onions on top of salmon nigiri. Simple...but effective. I'm a fan of strong tastes like garlic and onions so to have that little onion kick with the smoothness of salmon actually was pretty welcoming. Something I've never had before. We also ordered spam nigiri which didn't come until we asked 3 times. I mean, you're in hawaii. every time there's something that has spam, you try it! Thankfully, the waitress was kind enough to take that off our bill. in the end, genki sushi is a mystery to me. why is the logo a sad angry face when genki means happy in japanese? similarly, their sushi leaves me sad but somewhat satisfied. maybe it was just all the rice in my stomach.

Love their Corn Kernel rolls, Green Bean Tempura, Garlic Salmon, and Red Velvet Cupcakes. One star off bc the regular Salmon had a bit of a fatty texture although it might have been my imagination.

This location isn't up to par with other Genki locales, but it's not bad. Had a short wait because it was busy, but had to ask for counter to be cleaned because it was still sticky. So was the menu. We mostly stuck to ordering from the (sticky) menu, and everything was good. The main issue was trying to get someone to stop when we wanted to order. The conveyor was mostly filled with cupcakes and drinks, so they really should've been more attentive about service.

Got take out because the only place we knew that was open after 9pm. Price = quality. Both are reasonable/inexpensive. Fills the need for a light, cheap meal & beats out fast food drive thru. Hint: look for 10% discount coupon in those free tourist mags.

The angry little face you see is the face of the employees at this place. We ate here for the first time and actually found it kitschy and fun and the food isn't too bad either. You sit at a counter with a conveyer belt that whizzes sushi creations by for you to choose. We ordered miso soup. It was a really nice combination of miso, onions and tofu skins. Next we had avocado roll and cucumber roll. Don't waste money on these. They have a small dab of avocado in the middle and lots of rice and nori. Same for the cucumber roll. However, we did order tempura vegetables and they were wonderful. I also had a salad (I always think I should eat something green, bad habit) which wasn't bad either. It was tough getting our order and our server to come by to ask questions or even order anything else. We waited a really long time for our tempura and the waitress/waiter didn't seem to be bothered that we asked for it 3 times. It's a cute little process - you get something and the color of the plate tells you how much it costs. It seems like it's inexpensive but you keep eating and it keeps adding up. We weren't upset because we felt we got a lot of food for $21. Now, if they could just improve the service, it would be a better dining experience. If this is your first time on the island - you should know they also make sushi from spam. I was so surprised, I snapped a picture of it because I knew nobody back home would believe me.

I remember living on Kauai as a teenager and it being a huge deal when Genki Sushi opened up in Kukui Grove. Skip forward a bunch of years later and there is still a decent wait to eat here. This past Tuesday afternoon, I went here while shopping with family at Kukui Grove because I needed a sushi fix. (I hadn't had sushi in over a week, and well, that's just too long for me.) Surprisingly, despite the fact that it was a Tuesday afternoon, there was still a 10-15 minute wait before we were seated. In terms of sushi, the food here was lackluster like usual: plates may be on the belt for extended periods of time, the selection may be very skewed, and the rice quality is very deficient. In addition, in terms of conveyor belt sushi restaurants, the food was a bit inferior to other places I've been to. If there is any upside, it's that there is a very good variety of menu items and most of the things ordered from the kitchen are quite delicious (although the wait at times may not be worth it, and the poke bowl I ordered wasn't up to snuff). Pricing can be atrocious at times. The cheapest plates start at $1.55 and many of them are quite decent for the price. However, some of the $3.95 and $4.95 plates are just not worth it ($3.95 for machine-made, small cut, maguro nigiri?). If there was anything positively noteworthy about my visit, it was that the service was smooth and mostly friendly. All in all, I got a half-decent sushi fix, but at a very inflated price (especially considering quality). There are definitely better places to get sushi on the island (even the nearest supermarket is probably a better choice), but if you're feeling lazy and are already at Kukui Grove, Genki Sushi may provide you with the sushi fix you need.

One of the only restaurants open past 8:30! Not the best sushi, but a total win when we couldn't find one single restaurant open for dinner at 9 pm.

Love coming to Genki! their super cheap and you get stuffed after eating here!! absolutely love their Teri chicken Bowl & their Crab tempura roll (I don't think it's on the menu so you just have to ask for it) I personally don't grab anything off the rack that makes its rounds because I don't know how long it's been going around and around which is why I order everything through the waitress! If you don't have time to dine in , they can do take out for you also which is a PLUS :)

Great place for awesome sushi. It can be crowded and loud but I think its worth it. Very fun for kids and reasonably priced. They also do not add unnecessary fluff or seasoning to their sushi.

If it wasn't for Savannah M. at this Genki Sushi location, I would not even step foot in there. I actually ate here with my mom on Sunday Dec. 2nd, 2013, and little miss Savannah M. actually made our visit pretty pleasant. I am so glad that some of the girls I complained about before don't work there anymore. They made the feeling in that establishment, really negative. I would go there again, but only if Savannah is working!!

Terrible, just terrible. Sadly the worst sushi I have ever eaten. Thank goodness you can eat one at at a time. My wife and I each got a sushi roll and were surprised at the lack of fish in the rolls, and the rice was hard. We paid for our two rolls and went somewhere else for lunch.

Sushi was alright, I had better. Priced right for the portion. We hardly took food from the conveyor belt, instead we ordered directly from the menu. Service was fast. Since food portion is so small, it felt like we ate so much. But its great that they have small portions we were able to try other things in the menu without wasting any. One of only sushi place open on sundays.

In a shopping center, behind the Starbucks. Not my way of livin' it up in Kauai. There are booths around a sushi boat like set up but you can order fresh if you'd prefer. Sushi was okay, sashimi was better, tempura and hot items I don't recommend. Plus is that it's cheap, but my rec for a cheap meal is up the highway at Hamura's where you can easily get a hardy meal for less than $10. The place is staffed by high schoolers who will serenade you with Usher tunes but they do a good job of being attentive and getting the food to you quick.

Oishi Fishi Fun: I heard from friends that live on Kaua'i that Genki Sushi is a mainstay for sashimi. I have not seen this chain on the mainland so I decided to try it before leaving Kaua'i. I was not disappointed. The set up is cafe style so very casual. I chose the sushi bar to watch the little boats of delights cruise before me. I saw that people can order off the menu and make special requests to the sushi chefs. I just ate the floating fish. Each plate I chose tasted fresh and flavorful. I was tempted by the red velvet cupcake but resisted. Afterall, I was here for sashimi, not baked goods. The pricing is by tier, starting at $1.55 for vegetable maki plates. For the fancy rolls, the price can rise to $4.95. The service was a bit slow so I had to wait for my hot tea refills, but it was lunch time. All in all, I would recommend this sushi cafe for oishi fishi fun.

There are plenty of better sushi places out there on Kauai but if you have a sushi craving this suffice for the moment. Food: Honestly the only sushi roll I enjoy from here is the Spicy Bomb. Nothing else really appeals to me because it seems the fish is never as fresh as it should be. Service: Order everything from the servers and do not eat off the conveyor belt. I've seen people take plates off the belt, sniff it and the chat to others about whether to keep it or not and then proceed to place it back on the belt. I am sorry but while you where chatting I'm pretty sure you spat in it a couple of times. I've seen people do worse, such as poke the sushi with their chopsticks then place sushi back on the belt. So the lesson is just order from the servers. Price: Pricing differs depending on the plate color. But it tends to range within $10-$20 per person.

THE SHITEST SERVICE EVER- If you hate your job don't take it out on the customers-- we just wanted some cheap sushi...the girl threw our stuff down and left.. never checked on us-- the two guys working pretty much cleaned up her mess and followed up asking folks if they were doing alright-- fire her and give her wages to the two guys..they deserve raises... we went in for lunch on the first day of our trip.. made our usual long's etc run.... we were hungry and I said we should try it.... sigh... Food is cheap The tofu wasn't bad...the spicy tuna was decent.... I got full on 5 bucks The seaweed isn't too bad here either The chicken is fried and I personally liked it... miso was aight.... Not going back there unless in a pinch.. The plate are colored-- the colors mean different prices.. they count the plates and there you go-- FYI you have to do your own calculations...

Great to see that Kauai is getting some Genki love. I wanted some sushi and everything in Poipu was ridiculously expensive! The garlic ahi was really good, and they have Dr. Pepper on tap! My biggest gripe is that the ahi in the spicy ahi was previously frozen. Lame. If you haven't been there before, it may be a little hard to find. Look for the Starbucks, and Genki is hidden behind it, kinda on the "inside" of the strip mall.

i always order take out when i get Genki so i don't really have an opinion on the service inside or how the restaurant is ran but i guess this is a review for take out orders. my fiancé and i eat here probably at least once a week. he's always the one that calls and orders, the people that work there are mostly young and frazzled all the time. we just called yesterday to get 3 spicy California rolls and 1 tempura roll and the girl had to ask about 4 times what the order was, and then she repeated herself on the no cucumber 3 times, she just couldn't understand him for the life of her.. he got off the phone and goes "damn i feel bad for her, she must be training" so maybe it was her first day! no worries. there food is ok. definitely not the best such I've ever had but its good. I've only eaten inside once and it was semi nosy with a lot of kids so thats why i i just oder take out. there portions are ridiculous!! 4 little rolls is what you get when you order a type of roll.. and the prices are ok. i will continue to eat from here as long as i live on kauai.

My favorite place in Lihue for a quick lunch. Can be in and out in less than 30 minutes! My favorite is the garlic ebi and the ebi temura roll. The kabocha squash is delicious too! grab from the conveyor belt...so fun, or order everything from the menu for super freshness.

Sushi in a mall - guess what you can expect? Marginal sushi & rolls at best. We had 2-3 rolls and then went over to L&L for a real meal. Wouldn't eat here unless you are starving and nothing else is open.

One star for poor service, just awful service, two stars for food quality. I came in one day to have lunch and there I met this lady who was one of the servers. I said hi to her and asked for a table just for myself. No acknowledgement, she just looked at me (mind you it wasn't very busy at the time). So, I just looked for an empty seat, and found one but there was still dirty plates on it. I asked this same server nicely if I could please have a seat there. No acknowledgement, again. I sat down and waited while she was cleaning the spot where I wanted to eat, turned out it's her section. But because there was a divider kinda between me and her I couldn't see if she was done or not. A few minutes has passed and I had to check again to see if it's been bussed. And it was but she didn't care to let me know. So I just sat myself and started looking at the menu, still no hi or hello from this lady. I had to get her attention again for me to order. I just had the feeling that I wasn't welcomed there. Alright, so I finished my food, and I was ready for the check. I asked her again for the check and as I was talking to her she was walking away! Rude, rude, rude! Oh man! if you don't want to be there then find a different job.

I wanted to try this place because I heard it was started in Hawaii and I wanted to compare it to the one that just opened in Seattle. Lets just say that it's nothing like it. I think I must have gotten the same server as Vicky T. She seemed to have a "I hate my life and everyone in it" attitude. The place was pretty run down, I believe my boyfriend accidentally broke some of the trim on the booth when getting in because it got caught on his leg. There was a lack of atmosphere...a void, it was just... stark and impersonal and kind of medical feeling. As for the food, it wasn't bad. The stuff on the convener belt seemed a little dried out like it had been on there for a while. We ordered most of our sushi from the waitress so it would be fresh. I got the Rainbow Roll, Salmon Roll, and a California Roll. I thought the flavor was decent, I am still amazed at how they got avocado, salmon, and tuna to blend so well together to look like a rainbow! I guess you get what you pay for. We got some cheap sushi that tasted pretty good and didn't make us sick. If you want better service and environment, fork up some more cash and go to Kintaro's or some other sushi place.

your typical cheap sushi bar, all the seats/booths face the belt where you can grab the sushi. i chose to order mine as it's fresher, who knows how long those sushi rolls have been sitting out! i think because its hawaii, the quality of the fish seems a lot fresher to me. i really enjoyed my poki and salmon sushi. there's also this conveyer belt that has the rice pre-made into little balls. pretty nifty. hopefully it doesnt get too hard if it stays out too long. had the spam musubi and it was yummy too! all the plates are colored according to price, and prices were as low as $1.50 to about $5. cheap way to eat sushi! as long as you dont order all the $5 ones. id definitley say the poki ones were my favorite, since thats not something i get to have everyday. the waitress seemed new though, so a little slow on service, surprisingly they have a lot of wait staff. also inside, its FREEZING. i was freezing my butt off while trying to enjoy my sushi!

SERVICE WAS REALLY BAD! the lady making sushi disappeared for a while, then the waitress. After waiting for 15 minutes, we decided to leave....and still have to wait another 5 min for someone to come out to count the plates! at this particular visit, the restaurant was not busy and we saw 3 servers, + the lady making sushi.

Imagine eating at a restaurant in an empty closed mall! Odd huh? Anyways- if you look for quality, this is not the place. haven't been there since they've opened a few years ago. Sushi is bad and generic. Sorry! Conveyor belt sushi too. Don't forget. I had the seafood salad which was salty, garlic chicken which was too oily and almost raw, and a few more stuff. Service was wierd. I don't know, wouldn't go there againg. $30bucks for crap. PSSSh

cheap, afforfable, interactive. this is my go to place for a quick meal any time of the day. Every person I bring has a blast. yes it's not nobu. you're eating in a mall people; but value is there. remember you can order fresh made food items too, so you're not forced to have the stuff that's been sitting there for however long. i stick to traditionals, spicy tuna, natto, ume, miso. their ika gesu age is delish as well.

Great simple, non pretentious sushi "boat" place. Great service, YUMMY "Garlic Salmon" plate and others too. Not expensive at all. Easy, good, affordable sushi, what more can you ask for? ps. It's behind the Star Bucks in the Macy's shopping ctr. It's a little hard to find.

We got lured to visit this place from the two prior 5-star reviews on Yelp. No other sushi restaurant on Kauai got a full 5 stars rating, so "wow" we thought "we GOT TO VISIT". Well, well... Hold on with the excitement. If it does not become clear from the other reviews, this place is actually a Sushi Conveyor Belt (or Sushi Boat, as some prefer to call it a bit more romantically). Nothing wrong with that. However, I agree with Big Room's review. Some of the sushi is pretty good (namely the Ahi Poke, Seared Garlic Ahi, Onion Salmon, Geso Ika, Mayo Scallop etc.) but other than that, it is just average / OK quality, especially if compared with what you would get at a comparable restaurant in LA. I know I know, it is not possible to compare Kauai with LA. But then again, I live in LA & studied the taste of Sushi in Japan, so I don't know how else to compare. The fish is fresh, and not too expensive- so at least that I give them. However, it ain't cheap either. Service was not good (hence why I remove 2 stars). They weren't rude or anything, but should work on being more attentive, and faster. Gees it takes so much time to get them to even see you waving hands... The customers see you, the waiters don't see you... You know what I mean? We had to repeat many times the orders until finally we got all items we ordered. Thank god most of the sushi is already placed on the belt, so that compensates a little bit for the lack of attention.

  • Wes Y.

The sushi is alright. Not the greatest, but not the worst I've ever had. The fish was fresh, but there were a few maki rolls that you could tell weren't being picked up and left out too long. But overall, everything was ok. I liked the deep fried roll that they put out, and there were a lot of salmon nigiri with some sweet onion and mayo on top which I liked. Service was pretty good and we were asked often if we wanted something to order or needed a refill for water. Also, everything on the black plates going along the conveyor are $4.90, and they are usually the best tasting ones :)

  • Jana M.

We like Genki and come here pretty often. Perfect place to bring my daughter since she doesn't like to wait for her meal, we can literally sit down at the bar or in a booth and just start eating off the belt. If I want a real sushi experience I go to Kintaro or Sushi Katsu but for a quick lunch at the "mall" Genki is good. My husbands favorite is the spicy tuna and mine is the kabocha tempura.

  • Tiffany P.

For the way the restaurant is setup (sushi boat style) I would never go in expecting excellent service. It's more or less a serve yourself type place with the occasional order of a drink or something not on the conveyor belt. We found this place by accident and were seated right away once inside. Both my husband and I had been to places similar and knew how it worked. We were greeted with water and they asked if we would like to order anything special which I did, a teriyaki bowl, avocado maki and a cal roll. Even though there were california rolls on the belt the guy still took my order and brought everything out within minutes. For the price the food was decent and it was also very filling. The staff would make themselves available to us without intruding to ask us questions. In my opinion, that was absolutely how it should've been so I was happy with that. It's certainly not the best food but it wasn't bad either. I would go again.

Fast, cheap sushi! Get your sushi fix quickly and deliciously. We just got in and out in 30 minutes. We were there early, 4:30, because we were starving after hiking. Everyone was friendly, and service was fast. See the photos I uploaded. We ate our fill, including mochi ice cream for only $35, tax included. The most expensive rolls were only $4.95, with lots of options for $1.50-3.00 a plate. It is really hard to eat on Kauai for that cheap! The other sushi place in my guidebook was $16/roll. The sushi at Genki was fresh, and very tasty. No, it is not the most imaginative place, but if you are looking for good food that is affordable, I would recommend Genki. All of the servers were attentive, smiling, and friendly. Very large tables if you take a group and good for kids. My only complaint is that it is cold in there because they have A/C. Located in Kuhio mall, behind Starbucks and Jamba Juice, near Sears and Macy's.

    (4)
  • Caroline S.

Sushi on a conveyor belt, need I say more? Wanted a quick lunch in Lihue so Genki was a good, quick option if you're in the mood for sushi. Many more locals than tourists were there, and at lunch time (1pm) there was a 10 minute wait. The selection off the belt was adequate - but if you don't see much you like, order directly from a waitress. For 2 people with drinks (hot tea, soda) - we had approx. 8 plates and it was $35 - it's a color coded system, so if you're worried about price check the prices per color.

    (4)
  • Barney F.

Fast food sushi works for us. Not the greatest sushi, but decent for the price. It's better to order the sushi so you know it's freshly made. The stuff on the conveyer belt may have been sitting there for awhile. This Genki is in the mall but is not visible to the parking lot. Also the map on Yelp is not correct. So look for the Macy's mall and it's behind Starbucks.

    (4)
  • Frank B.

I've been here about 50 times. The food has steadily gotten better. I did have 2 bad experiences where I grabbed a couple plates of salmon that must have been on the conveyor too long - cause they were dry and rough and nasty. But most everything is good!

    (4)
  • JON R.

If you're a sushi-eating beast on a budget, then this is the place for you! Just sit down and start pulling plates from the conveyer belt of goodness...just the basic sushi and rolls, but well worth the price. We already grubbed here twice and may come back a 3rd time ... Cool spot, great service and fresh sushi, stop in and start stacking the plates!

    (5)
  • Harry D.

It's sushi that comes around on a belt, what do you expect? I eat here all the time, and I've never had a bad meal. The plates are very inexpensive if you pick the right ones. I can get pretty full for about 11-15 dollars, and it's fast too! No need to wait for service, just grab the sushi you want. The servers are always very attentive to bring drinks or take your order for something not on the conveyor belt. You can spend the same amount at other places for less food. Try the poke bowl, it's a big serving of spicy Ahi over rice, very filling. I'll be back, and I'll be stacking my empty plates high.

I have had worse sushi (sad, really), but it was cheap. Almost everything had mayo (hate it) and the atmosphere was like a school cafeteria, an empty one. Do yourself a favor, spend a bit more to have a decent meal. If you skip this place, you're not missing anything.

    (2)
  • Baby C.

You have to order everything! Don't rely on the conveyer belt to bring you food unless you saw it get put there. who knows how long its been sitting. Its cheap and you can get in and get out fast. I used to go here during my short lunch break from work and I never spent more than $10

    (5)
  • Stan W.

With conveyor belt sushi the expectations were definitely low - but this place managed to fall short of even my rock-bottom expectations. They were out of salmon, and everything else they had was saturated in siricha and mayo. I felt slightly ill afterwards.

This is by far the WORST sushi in the United States. How they can even call it sushi is a joke. The staff is rude, young and dumb. Our waitress not only waited on us but went behind the counter and made our so-called sushi. How insane is that? How can anyone F-up a cucumber roll? Go here and you'll find out. This place is cheap for a reason - everything was not fresh and it was previously frozen. And how many times it was frozen and un-thawed is anyone's guess. This place is an eye-sore on the beautiful island of Kauai. The people who gave this place more than one star probably eat at McDonald's on a regular basis and find it to be A-okay. The Wasabi was not Wasabi - I could not identify the taste. Gross, gross gross. I'm no kid and I've eaten in some of the finest sushi places in the world. Why I wandered into this place is I do not know. I was on vacation, hungry and stupid I guess. But now I realize I went in here so I could warn everyone to stay out of this hell hole.

This genki's is the only location where their fish is actually fresh. It's clean and they actually have the sense not to put fried items on the conveyor belt because it'll turn stale. The place was clean and we got seated quickly, it wasn't loud and over-crowded either. I always order sushi and it came right away. Overall, I really liked this place because it had fresh fish.

This place was an oasis for us considering we were going BROKE ASS vacationing in Kauai!! Kerry did a fantastic job describing the concept of the restaurant so read her review for that. As a tourist, I know that a place is good when it's poppin' with locals. That's Genki Sushi. My hubby and I were in the Kukui Grove shopping center actually looking for another restaurant - The Deli Connection (an awesome place, BTW, but you'll have to read that review later.) Unfortunately, it was closed but fortunately for us, we stumbled across Genki Sushi. After paying over $90 per meal at the Grand Hyatt, we were so excited to run across this restaurant! As I mentioned, Kerry's review is pretty spot on. The sushi is great - fresh, tasty and cheap! We were so hungry (we had gone on a hike prior to eating) that we paid no mind to the dishes that were accumulating in front of us. "Damn, that spicy tuna roll is awesome!" "The sashimi is delicious! Holy crap, how much is it?!" Anyway, Jon figured we spent about $45 which was still good in our book. Uh ... no. We spent $33. $33?!?!?!! Are you freakin' kidding me?! We feasted like ravenous pigs and still came in at that price. And I kid you not when I say the sushi is damn good. It's a simple concept that works. The service is nothing to write home about but I have NO COMPLAINTS considering how inexpensive and yummy the food is and it's a pretty clean place. Don't get me wrong, of course you spent a buttload of money to get your ass to Kauai so you should have a one or two nice meals. But when you get tired of paying out the nose yet still want to eat good food, you best put Genki Sushi on your list!

For a conveyer belt sushi place, you can't beat it. Being from Southern California, our conveyer belt sushi consists of all those Korean owned sushi joint inspired rolls (California, Dragon, Rainbow, Spider, etc.). I was surprised to see that they actually had sushi here. Plus it's really cheap, considering this is pretty much a resort island.

I am lucky enough to have had family move to Kauai, Hawaii (Kapaa) when I was in grade school, so visiting is yearly for me. Genki Sushi it the best sushi I have ever had and has the best concept around. Lets start with the concept. There is a large conveyor belt that is completely covered and refrigerated that circles the entire eating establishment that is accessible by all tables. Have you ever had tried to order sushi and thought to your self " my, I sure would like to have a few of these maki/negri/sashimi" but then realize the portions would be too much for one individual and that you could wind up with a ridiculous bill. Genki eliminates this - On the conveyor belt there are color coded plates with smaller portions of sushi. The colors of the plates correlate with its price range and this is clearly listed and visible throughout the restaurant. There is a a chef that stands above the belt that is constantly making fresh dishes and removing the old. Nothing is sitting out or being touched. You are also able to place a custom order if you would like and also the standard sushi bar fare is available. Miso, edamame, tofu etc... Now to the fish. I love Sushi, love it. My favorite is sashimi but will have negri or maki also. I am not your standard person that considers a Philadelphia Roll as sushi. Cover anything in cream cheese and it will probably taste good. Genki does not really offer that type of maki but I am sure you can place a custom order with the chef. Everything is so fresh. Their Ahi is so fresh and is probably caught off the island, most likely that day. I have probably had every single item they offer - except the hot-dog roll (wtf?) - and can say it was the best ever. Their unagi is amazing, not too salty and not too sauced up. I could go on but here is my list of my favorites from Genki Sushi. I love it all, so this was a hard selection. Gunkan - Spicy Tuna - Tombo Ahi, Flying Fish Eggs, Capelin Eggs, Mayonnaise, Ichimi (Japanese Red Pepper), Green Onion, Sesame Seed Oil, Nori Wrap, Sushi Rice Nigiri - Unagi - Steamed Fresh Water Eel, Nori Band, Unagi Sauce, Sushi Rice Maki - Dragon Roll - Sliced Steamed Fresh Water Eel, Snow Crab, Cucumber, Avocado, Unagi Sauce, Mayonnaise, White Sesame Seeds, Grilled Nori Wrap, Sushi Ahi Sashimi Temaki - Spicy tuna - Tombo Ahi, Flying Fish Eggs, Capelin Eggs, Mayonnaise, Ichimi (Japanese Red Pepper), Green Onion, Sesame Seed Oil, Nori Wrap, Sushi Rice If you are ever visiting Kauai, take the trip to Lihue. They are located in Kukui Grove Shopping center. I have already created a puddle of drool at my desk and will now need some sushi for dinner. Maybe I will type a review for Thai Oscar next.
