My daughter and I hit up the deli when spending a day at the Brennecke's beach. I sent her across the street a few times as I was basking in the sun (or I really should say, burning in the sun) reading some trashy novel (I did bring a sophisticated one as well). Anyway, this is more like a 7-11 type of place that has an ice-cream counter, and a subway type deli inside. You can also find booze, soda, chips and candy of all kinds. Hot dogs too if you are so inclined to eat something hot while your body is baking.

Excellent food and service. We were told there was a 30 minute wait, but were seated in 10 minutes. The appetizer plater was a good value, however the main fish course was on the high price end ($25). We would return.

Got sandwiches for lunch while hanging out at Poipu beach. Sandwiches were tasty and good sized. A bit overpriced like everything in Hawaii but convenient place to get a quick lunch

This is the place to go if you're near Poipu beach and just want something quick and casual to eat by the shore (or in your hotel room). Very friendly employees, decent sandwiches, and the Dizzy Lizzy cookies are quite good (but they're overpriced). Sure beats spending $50 for a steak at the fancy hotel restaurants. Didn't try the shave ice, but will next time.

The best part about this restaurant was the view. Beautiful view of the ocean. I thought the service was good and the food was okay. I think of the food and service like Denny's. Nothing to get excited about, but it will do.

One of the better burgers in Lihue. Great view of the beach and ocean.

i love the bottom of brenneckes beach deli. quick deli sandwiches, quick stop for hot dog & even their bowl of chili is ONO :) but what i always go there for is their refreshing Shaved Ice & yummy strawberry & Banana smoothie :)

  • Pebble L.

Eh, what a difference between the resto and the deli. Service is not great, long a wait for simple sandwiches, overpriced.

  • Vicky T.

I personally like the Koloa shaved ice spot better, and this location because it is down on the beach does not have all the flavors 24-7. The ice is slightly chunky not smooth... This is where I got my Dizzy Lizzy's fix during the trip. This place is much better than the actually restaurant. I would just go here and skip the expensive food.

  • Coco Z.

Yummy shaved ice! I was only a little disappointed when I saw that Koloa shaved ice's portions were WAY bigger. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed my Brennecke's shaved ice on my walk back to condo. Mahalo!

Everything was okay, just slow as can be. My wife got a hot dog and two bags of chips. After waiting with her for nearly 10 minutes, I left, and it took another 5 after that. They microwaved the hot dog, that was the only prep, and that took 15 minutes? But, that was island pace and there were few options.

  • W M.

Had the tuna sandwich , it was an okay sandwich, good size and quick service. Nothing special

  • Daphne J.

Convenient place to grab what you need before heading out. The breakfast here is simple, local, grab-and-go, Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice kine. It's just what you need. Say hi to Aunty next time you stop in.

The shaved ice hit the spot after a long drive.

I like a lot of things about this deli, and the upstairs currently has 5 stars from me, even though it's way overpriced. I love the Hoku's Hero, perhaps my favorite sandwich there. If you order a panini...which is very tasty, you're in for a long wait, and you will probably be seeing a staff training excersize. So why the 2 stars? Piss poor management. I filled up my sandwich card for a free sandwich, ordered a hero, and was waiting to have them make it. While I was waiting, my little boy came in from the beach and said he was hungry. I ordered him a ham and cheese on white bread as an afterthought, when my free sandwich was practically made. They wouldn't let me use my filled card for my sandwich, but only the kids' cheap sandwich. Even though I'd bought 10 Hoku's to get it. I remember it was a local lady managing, 40s, unsmiling, with a tight pony tail that goes all the way down her back. I remember another time she wouldn't believe I was Kama aina even with proof, I was in my boardies without my license. They lost my business for over a year because of the card thing. They're promotion lost them money because they wouldn't honor it! I buy not only sandwiches, but drinks, shots, chips, etc. even though they're ridiculously over priced. They lost a family if consumers, upstairs and down for over a year. The clincher? This should land them 1 star, but I really do want to like their place. I go in a couple weeks back for a sandwich. 2 workers, one is making shave ice for someone else, the kid mopping the floor notices me, and comes to take my order. Awesome. He was kind and ready to help me. Between mopping the floor and making my sandwich, he didn't wash his hands.

The breakfast burritos are to die for!!! They put a very generous portion of scrambled egg, bacon, guacamole and salsa all in a flour tortilla. My family of 4 had breakfast there every other morning for less than $25 including drinks and freshly baked pineapple muffins!!! Pick up breakfast there and take it across to eat on Poipu beach, enjoy the views and the wind in your face. We looked for local spots around but everything else was big tourist traps. Brennekes deli is a great find and feels like the place where the locals eat.

  • Joe G.

If you're looking for shave ice, go somewhere else. It's not shave ice here. They feed ice cubes into a machine that crushes them. There is almost zero flavor to the "flavors" as well. The only saving grace was the Mac nut ice cream

  • Jackie A.

Very slow and disorganized! Had to wait forever for 2 simple sandwiches. Food may have been OK but we had to eat so quickly to make our 2:00 zip lining adventure, we had to throw half away. Great location, next to the beach, but allow 20 minutes for them to make your sandwich!

  • Boris v.

    Decent food but overpriced.

Hands down best shaved ice ever! Tried it as a snack in the middle of a hot day out at Brennecke's beach for hardcore boogie boarding. I'm actually surprised that it was so great because this is not something I would typically like, but I will definitely make this a must-visit place when we go to Kauai. The shaved ice with macadamia nut ice cream underneath is PHENOMENAL! Choose up to 3 flavors. I just like the passionfruit the most so that is my choice flavor. The rest of our trip in Hawaii in Oahu - we searched for shaved ice as delicious as this, and did not find it - because no one else put premium ice cream underneath like the macadamia nut ice cream. That was key. However, at a place in Oahu that we visited (Waiola's) - they load in the flavor much more than Brennecke's does. That is a nice touch also. Did not visit Matsumoto's in the north shore of Oahu...that will have to be saved for a future trip to Hawaii. But Brennecke's is the place to go for shaved ice!

  • Liv R.

If you've never had Shave Ice, you won't know any better. What makes perfect shave ice is the blade. The ice should have the texture of snow, not small ice chunks. They give you WAY too much shave ice. Our whole party of 4 had to remove half of the shave ice to get to the ice cream at the bottom. The mac nut ice cream is pretty good, but the shave ice is bunk. Too chunky... sharpen your blade brah'.

We are return customers here. It isn't cheap, but two of us got out of there for around $80. We had Ono and Mahi Mahi. The fish was cooked well, and the proportion was adequate. We had a pitcher of strawberry daiquiri, which while tasting good was extremely light on the booze. We also had Mai Tai's, which were on-par with other local establishements. The waitstaff was right on time. The point is that this place has a setting all it's own. You have to go here at least once if you are in the area to see what you think.

Great joint to grab a good sandwich while in Poipu, roll in, order a fat sandwich and a cold beer.....your in paradise, eat it at the park across the street. This place is Spartan but organized, this deli is how a sandwich shop should be ran....awesome, affordable and tasty.

This review is for the shave ice shop they have down stairs. My first impression of this place is what rude customer service. I mean yes they were preparing to close but not closed and Mia who saw us coming in the door which we all heard what she said..."F... we should have locked that damn door"..with more cuss words after that. I saw her reaction so I had asked her if they were still open and she said sure why not but so rudely. So we didn't know what to get but we had an idea of what we wanted, so we asked if we can get kona ice cream scoop with shave ice...her reaction...sure why f...... not. Wtf...why is this beezy so rude. If they were closed then just say so...she didn't have to be so rude and we can clearly hear everything she is saying under her breath. I have to admit the ice cream was good but the shaved ice was so hard that it became like a one big piece of ice on top of ice cream. I am sorry but but this place is not worth coming to again.

  • Jennifer H.

I like going here for shave ice when we go to the beach across the street. Some of the other reviews mention bad service, but I've never had a problem. On our most recent trip there, I thought they were very accommodating, preparing shave ice for 8 people without any issues. They were actually quite friendly as we tried to figure out who was getting what. I've never had a sandwich here, but the shave ice is good and it's a good place to get a snack or drink for the beach. I'm a fan.

  • Jamie W.

Awesome sandwiches across the street from the beach. We had the club and the Italian hero. Both were delicious and served on the freshest sourdough I've had in a long, long time. The service was a little odd - not sure if this is a Hawaiian thing - but when we arrived, we were the only people in the store and all five employees ignored us for close to five minutes. Finally someone said that they'd be right with us. Afterward they were fine. It was like they had just opened (which they hadn't) or had just gotten into a fight or something. Weird tension. Anyway, the sandwiches won out and I'd definitely pick up from here again!

  • Manoj N.

Wish i can give 0 stars. We got shaved ice from this place and it was disgusting. It was the worst shave ice i have ever had not just in Kauai but other islands. You get better ones in L.A where we live. The shaved ice was everything but shaved. You can bite on the icicles and the syrup was way too less. After a few minutes the flavor was gone and we had to throw away the 3 ice we got. The guys at the counter have an attitude and seemed rushed and no smiles or wishes. Avoid avoid avoid this place..

    (1)
  • Kevin S.

Don't go there if you're wanting Hawaiian style shave ice. This place serves what is more like a snow cone. I should have turned around when I saw them using ice cubes instead of an ice block to make it. They have a decent selection of flavors and the ice cream was fine but the shave ice if you could call it that was crunchy and not soft like I expect when it is called shave ice.

    (2)
  • A S.

It's fine. There are better places for sure. Usual food items. Seafood, pulled pork. But there Mai Tai was particularly good. I'd say 3 stars on the food but 4 stars for the Mai Tai

The Deli is the downstairs portion of the building and the one open for breakfast. Came here first thing in the morning for a super casual quick meal. It's located right across from Brenneck's beach and the kiddie tidal pool area of Poipu Beach. It's actually a pretty killer location because there's lots of picnic tables and a big playground in the beach park. The food itself is okay: Think Costco products made to order for you. I gotta give 4 stars for the Aloha of the staff though, as they were just so nice and friendly. But again, with the exception of Koloa Fish Market and Hamura Saimin, most of the places we ate at in Kauai the food was okay but the Aloha served wit it was wonderful. Anyways, we ordered pancakes and it was a lot, two people could eat it; it came with some bacon and eggs. And a 2 eggs, with bacon and toast breakfast. Which again you can tell that the food was premade somewhere else or semi-cooked, then warmed up or put together there. As they only have a hot plate behind the counter. Prices aren't the cheapest but for Poipu it's not bad. Overall, I'd probably come here again for breakfast just because the location, convenience and quick service are perfect for tourists. Pros: -Location, location, location -Service -Quick, quality food -Lots of parking Cons: -Food is mediocre (Costco variety) but freshly made -

This is a tradition for us when we come to Kaua'i. Friendly local style dishes. Try the Tai-chi and the seared ahi!

  • Naheed M.

Convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat while at poipu beach. Sandwiches were mediocre but had fresh ingredients which was a plus. Overpriced, but what else to expect from Kauai?

  • Chascona A.

Worst meal of the trip - actually of the year. We have never sent back food but this is the place I would have done it (didn't occur to us since we've never been faced with the situation). First off - was there for dinner so might explain why the difference in ratings. Without the view the place didn't hold up for us. Had ahi steak - asked for medium rare, got well done (big difference). Date had steak medium well, and it came rare and bloody. Everything came within 5 minutes - precooked? - and everything was room temperature or COLDER!! Even the rice was room temp and mushy/overcooked and no salt. Prices were high - maybe typical for Hawaii but definitely overpriced. Had to eat something after to get the taste out of our mouths. And service was barely polite. Never again!

overpriced simple sandwiches, but it hit the spot this deli is like part convenience store and part deli. Got a simple turkey sandwich. Somehow, they were out of pepper jack cheese (boo!). Although, they did have cucumbers. Mmm, nice and cool. Best part, this is where I got dizzylizzy cookies. I got the chocolate chip ones, they were thin and crisp and crunchy. YUM. They also have shaved ice, hot dogs, burgers, breakfast plates etc. If you want to picnic on the beach, this is probably the closest spot to grab stuff near Poipu and Shipwreck.

  • Jon N.

My least favorite shave ice in my week on Kauai. The woman preparing was meticulous and did her best, but they seem to have an inferior ice machine which works off wet crushed ice rather than ice blocks, so it came out wet.

I have never written a review for a deli and I never expected to write a five star review. Brennecke's deli has simply amazing paninis which are made fresh to order. These are not the mass produced paninis like you see in a NYC deli. They are made with interesting bread and fresh ingredients. They are very tasty and are great buys at $5-7. I tried the turkey and the ham paninis and both were excellent. They are perfect for an al-fresco lunch at the beach. The girls who work there are very nice. They also sell shave ice which is nothing special, but my son likes them. I normally don't like sandwiches, but Brennecke's Paninis made me a believer!

Extremely over priced for a microwaved egg sandwich, but at least was the bread was good.

  • Derek M.

We had the nachos with pork three times in a 7 night stay. They are totally worth it. I also had the fish tacos and thought they were the best I tried on the island bc they were very simple.

  • Frank F.

Mediocre food. Burger looked and tasted like a Costco patty. Was asked how I wanted the burger done, said medium, came out Costco grey overdone. $12 for a Costco burger. 2 stars for good location and decent service.

    (2)
  • John Y.

shave ice was not good. used ice cubes to crush the shave ice...

    (2)
  • S. H.

Nothing great, nothing bad. Sandwich was average, decent selection of bottled drinks. Good option from across the beach. Workers just seemed angry to be there... tourist burn out.

  • Keegan W.

The atmosphere is perfect. Right up on the beach, open windows and a nice ocean breeze. Cool bar and live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The food was decent. With my party of six, I saw the gamut of the menu. I ordered fish 'n chips, which was sub-par. 4/10, if I had to rate it. It was like Long John Silvers with better fish. Greasy, bland, and boring. One person got pork tacos, which were amazing. Another person got ahi tuna tacos, which were also amazing. Some pasta was ordered, and it was the best thing ever. And the service was great. Aside from my boring entree, this place is pretty rad. Check it out.

    (4)
  • Amanda K.

It was ok. The food was three stars (average) but I gave an extra star for the view. The Mai Tai's weren't very good which was disappointing on our first night in Hawaii but it was walking distance to where we were staying and the food was OK. I wish I had come back to try their shaved ice but next time!

Went here for our lunch prior to flying home to Maui. We ordered two rounds of drinks, they were definitely good but took a LONG time to receive. We also got the pupu platter app. It had shrimp that was probably previously frozen, some pork which was amazing, ceviche which was good, and a few other things. Next we ordered the tacos to split. We did not ask for another plate even though our waitress asked us, so I started eating one of the fish tacos....it was pretty good until we saw a large DEAD cockroach in the taco. I immediately called the waitress over and let her know and told her to take the tacos away and wed like our check. Next thing you know the manager came over (white guy, lots of tattoos , bigger build) well he was just full of himself, came over LOUD as can be started off with that is the freshest lettuce ever-from where I live- ya we should have washed it better but boy...and we said not a big deal ...then instead of saying sorry he proceeded to say ya ya I know I need to go on yelp and tripadvisor and respond to all the people complaining -that's my job.so annoying...so im so glad you told us now...REALLY DUDE ...THATS DISGUSTING ..your waitress had better customer service than you...you should be ashamed ...we live in maui and have fresh everything from farms...LOCAL...and I have never seen a DEAD cockroach in any of that produce...never again would we go there...and while walking away he said don't worry....ill take that off your bill...OBVIOUSLY he better have...so for our drinks and app it was about 64 bucks...bottom line...NOT WORTH THE MONEY and manager was Horrible...

Got food poisoning. Spent the worst night of my life. I'll pass on this place next time.

  • Cooper L.

Agree with the comment down below about their shave ice. It's not shave ice, it's essentially a snow cone. Shave ice is made by shaving a block of ice. They just put ice cubes into a blender. What a waste of $4.

Shave Ice Stand Off The 5th contender: Brennecke's Beach Deli, Kauai First impressions: A deli attached to a restaurant with a shave ice sign out front at 2PM in the mid day heat of the sun is an invitation to try anything cool. The Shave Ice: Large with ice cream, (no azuki beans on the menu). Flavors were passion fruit, vanilla and coconuts. The Verdict: Ice was a really kinda Sno Cone. (again dammit!) Flavors were good actually. for some reason the first bites were lacking in syrup, but as we dug down it got good. Cost: At $5.50 no azuki beans, I know why people love the North Shore of Oahu for Shave Ice goodness. The girl serving us was a sweetheart. So cute, friendly and pretty. 2PM heat brings them in to get refreshed no matter how it shaves... g

Please don't eat here. Save your money And eat at a real seafood restaurant. We had the watery chowder and it was very boring. The fish and chips was $20 plus and it was 3 pieces of the most greasy battered fish . Won't go back a again. Just a tourist trap.

    (1)
  • Peter H.

I can't give it full justice as we only ordered breakfast burritos and I can imagine that would be really hard to screw up. The bartender upstairs is awesome 5 STARS he will tell you all the great places to snorkel and things to do in the island... The food is okay. Not bad, good, but not great...

    (3)
  • Krystle M.

Sorry guys, maybe you have been going to all the wrong places. I gave 2 stars because the sandwich was descent. We got the aloha sandwich and it was good and conveniently located. Here are the reasons I don't care for this place. The cashier was so unfriendly. She seemed put out to serve us. Why are you in the service industry if you don't like helping people??? That just doesn't make sense. We were standing back trying to figure out what to order and she literally screamed out in a sarcastic, irritated tone "IS ANYONE ORDERING SANDWICHES?!" Geez, what crawled up your butt and died?!!! Although, I did notice she was nice to her co-workers so maybe her anger is only directed at the tourists that pay her bills every month. Secondly, the shave ice was not good. In fact, I didn't find any good shave ice in the south side of the island. I'm going to try another place today to see if I can find one. But, I can say, now I know the difference between shave ice and a snow cone. This was a snow cone--shave ice is soft and very fine and so yumm! This ice was thicker, like icy snow so every time I tried to take a bite it would spill all over the place and towards the bottom it was one big ice cube. Everyone in Kauai has been so incredibly friendly so the unfriendliness at Brennecke's Deli was magnified. This was literally the only time during our stay that anyone wasn't overly nice and helpful.

  • A R.

Rude, inexperienced staff and not so great food. You're better off going elsewhere.

    (1)
  • Stacey A.

We loved this place. The customer service was excellent. We waited for a window table and enjoyed the breeze and the view. Clam linguine, prime rib, chicken rigatoni, and coconut shrimp were all excellent. We finished up with lava cake which was super yummy!

    (5)
  • Sugar B.

This place is everything a restaurant SHOULDN'T be - unfriendly, rude, unhelpful, rushed, rude and mediocre food. The only thing they have going for them is the location - the only place in walking distance from Poipu Beach to get a take-out lunch.

    (1)
  • Kai R.

Go here for the shaved ice - very affordable. Other places are charging $1.50 more. Right across the beach at Poipu...

    (4)
  • X X.

Overpriced shaved ice $5.50 with the mac nut ice cream scoop, but giving it 5 stars because everything else I ate in Kauai was disgusting or average. Honestly, all shaved ice is delicious to me and tastes the same. Nice worker and the mac nut is tasty oddly enough with cherry, lime, and watermelon. Nice worker, lots of parking, and it's nice taking it to the beach to watch the sunset. Thanks for not making me throw up (Koloa Fish Market), not being melted or the wrong order (Keoki's Paradise), and where I actually finished eating it (Costco).

    (5)
  • Pops F.

Beer, shaved ice, decent sandwiches, all 10 yards off the beach. Service is friendly, beer is plentiful, shaved ice portions are huge (we got large ones for the kids and no one finished theirs), prices are island-typical. Much better than eating something you packed yourself in your condo and sat in your beach bag for 3 hours.

    (3)
  • Nichole B.

Hubby and I went here for shaved ice while at the beach. It was ok. They were super busy when we went, so the service wasn't the best.

    (3)
  • Mimy B.

THE DELI is on street level: canned beer and snacks - great. "shave ice" - i think not! this is not hawaiian shave ice, but a cheap knock off. if you don't see a huge block of ice, then it's not real. they use chip ice and the result is a sno cone and that's just not good enough when you're in hawaii! THE RESTAURANT is upstairs. OK food, but not great and pricey for what you get. Drinks are fresh and they do have a happy hour. Overall, go to catch a drink, but hit up the Poipu Grill or Koloa Fish Market for food.

    (3)
  • D G.

Very convenient. I recommend the sandwiches which are inexpensive. I didn't try the shave ice - it seemed overpriced.

    (4)
  • Cass F.

Oh, if only I had a few more bucks to go up to the restaurant that was upstairs. My brother said it was pretty good. Instead I settled on the deli below. For one, I was with my father and he wanted to go back to the condo. Two, my son was jonesing for TV and he wanted a sandwich since he did not have dinner earlier. Finally three, I was jonesing for a drink because I do not like drinking in front of my parents because they would just start complaining to me about me having a problem. The kid's club sandwich was six and a quarter while the pint of Bacardi and the pint of beer set me back thirteen clams. A note about Hawaii, most prices are the same as on the mainland. The real place you are hit in the pocketbook are in buying gas and food and alcohol.

We went here for lunch and had the fish n chips. It was really good not greasy at all and the fish was fresh.
