    For my first time, this was definitely a real treat for me and my parents. First off the outdoor, beach-side location of the buffet was stunning. The Mauna Kea Beach Resort is a really nice beach side resort with a beautiful view, a great collection of artwork around the hotel, and a nice private feel. The great weather and the huge waves definitely made for a unique experience. Exactly the kind of atmosphere you want to have when on vacation in Hawaii! The highlight of the entire dinner was the all-you-can-eat lobster, which included the ENTIRE lobster, bibs and cracking tools included! As a plus, the cooking staff chops the lobster in half and cracks the claw a bit to make it a bit easier to remove the succulent lobster meat. Also, these lobster weren't dainty in size, they were a generous portion. I must have had three whole lobsters! You can also request to have on specific parts of the lobster if you would rather not deal with the whole buggah. Along with that, the buffet included some other notables such as clams and mussels in the shell, prime rib, oysters, shrimp cocktail (decent size), and mahi mahi filet. There were a few other things that I didn't bother checking out because I was really focused on the lobster and prime rib. The dinner was pretty pricey (~$120 per person) and not a lot of included beverage options. However, I think the fact you get to have whole lobsters and as many as you want jacks up the price. Also, I am not a huge fan of having to scoop out your own ice cream out of a huge barrel of ice cream. Reminds me of my college cafeteria. Also, with kids and the warm weather, I feel this could present some potential health hazards. Nevertheless, definitely a dinner experience you should save up for and take that special someone on that special occasion. Mahalo nui for a great experience!

    Although kinda pricey, I'd say well worth it! Beautiful scenery and excellent food! Unfortunately, We got caught in a rainstorm, and had to relocate seats ,but the staff was very helpful and on it!. Would definitely go again!

    Did not like it one bit. Even free it would have been a disappointment. Say a 2 out of 10 but after a mandatory 15% gratuity and such for 4 was a humongous $475.00. So I give it for the $ a 1 out of 10. Sticky seats just lousy food in general. Way better good and values elsewhere. Stay Away!

    I have to give it only three stars. It is pricey and some of the seafood is not all that fresh. The bay shrimp salad was drowning in mayo - my husband thought it was mac salad. The oysters were anemic looking, not plump. When asked where they were from, the server said - West Coast. The Ahi was pretty fresh but you had to watch out for the grizzle part on some pieces. The Dungeness crab tossed in black beans wasn't very fresh, but then again, I am from the SF Bay Area. I did not try the clams and mussels with Pernod. The salad bar was mediocre - nothing exciting - seaweed salad, fern shoots - they could have done more local selections. The corn was overcooked and the prime rib not very flavorful. The Caesar salad with local lettuce was very tasty. The wine list is the event list - very limited. Not at all like Manta. The reason to go...the lobster - freshly cooked with drawn butter. And the setting is beautiful - even without a moon. Listening to Hawaiian music and the waves added to the ambiance.

    How do I begin, My Husband was very unsure of this choice given the word " Buffet" even comes in the clam bake experience, however was he ever so mind changed. This only happens at the Mauna Kea on Saturday nights, from 6-8pm with three seatings in between, it is about $100.00 per person, but so worth it. Farm fresh veggies from upper Island, oysters, shrimp, clams, lobster lobster lobster, and prime rib along with veggies and rice and every dessert you can imagine. there was no line for anything as some people have said, you are sitting right on the beach, the sunset, AMAZING! A great night, we didn't take our kids, there were kids there, but more aduly type atmosphere. Service was AMAZING also!

    A huge disappointment!! Save your $$$. The property is hugely underwhelming. Paid over $100 per person for a meal where less than 7 FT from our table a party of 10 bathing suit clad individuals partied while their infants & toddlers screamed in exhaustion. Couldn't get off that property quick enough. You will have a much better dining experience at the Fairmont Orchid or Four Seasons. EPIC FAIL!!!

    It is one of the most expensive buffets out there at $86. Here's what you get: all you can eat whole steamed Maine lobster, ahi sashimi, oyster on the half shell, sauteed dungeoness crab, steamed clam & mussels, prime roast beef, wide selection of dessert - all served overlooking a spectacular sunset and under the stars on the Kauna'oa Beach. The setting doesn't get any better. For me, the headlines are the sunset, stars and the red crustaceans. Everything else is supporting cast. If you prefer a wide selection of entrees from different cuisine (like the more notable Vegas buffets), this probably isn't for you. But if the idea of having steamed lobster on the beach in paradise sounds too good to pass, then you ought to give this a try. Don't forget your American Express. =) BTW, it's only offered for dinner on Saturdays.

    I have been to this event more times than I can count and if you love seafood this is the place for you. All you can eat shellfish (lobster, shrimp, crab, etc) along with sliced prime rib, salad, fish, corn, desserts, etc. The price is steep but its worth it if you can really pack it in. It is located at the Hau Tree right on the beach and is a perfect setting to stuff your face while watching a beautiful sunset. The only drawback is if you go during sunlight hours there can be a slight problem with flies.

    Overall, it was a pleasant evening; however, I would not return to the clambake again. For the $192 cost without wine, tax, and gratuity, we enjoyed our dinners and overall experience at the KPC restaurant at the Hilton Waikoloa Village far more than the clambake. The clambake is located on a beautiful beach with live music. The setting was wonderful! When you enter the clambake area, there is a center buffet table with tuna shashimi, oysters on the half shell and shrimp cocktail. Flies were a problem and the clambake folks were doing their best to keep the files off of the appetizer table. They even had a women waiving a branch over the seafood to keep the files away. The quality of the appetizers wasn't bad but note that the shrimp was previously frozen and the tuna grade was medium. Also, toward the end of the evening the appetizer table did start to smell fishy. So, I suggest hitting the appetizer display right away and get your food from underneath the top of the display to avoid the fly problem. Around the perimeter, there was a salad buffet display which had cole slaw, pasta salads, bay shrimp salad and a green salad. Next was a dessert display which had a variety of bite sized deserts and an ice cream bar. It was followed by a side dish table which had white rice, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, mixed veggies, clam chowder, baked fish and bread. Nothing stood out either good or bad about any of the side dishes or deserts-all standard buffet food. Directly in the back was the lobster, crab, mussels, ceasar salad and prime rib. To be fair, since it is a buffet, we did not have the same expectations for the taste and quality of the food then we did for a fine dining restaurant. We mainly concentrated on the lobster and prime rib. The lobster (the main attraction) was good but the texture and taste of my first lobster suffered from being held in the buffet bin at the very beginning of the clambake. After they ran out of the lobster in the buffet bin, the texture and taste improved as they prepared each lobster fresh. Even though you have to wait in line, I would suggest waiting until the bin is empty before getting any lobster. Although the lobsters are large, there is really only about 5-6 oz of meat (unless you want to tackle the claws-I thought the claw meat tasted fishy compared to the meat in the tail). I tried to eat the crab, but the shells were too difficult to crack and what crab was yielded wasn't worth the effort. Mr GDS thought the prime rib was a bit gamey and was cooked medium to medium well - a little too done for his taste. Don't expect medium rare or rare prime rib. Overall, service was good from the waiter, hostess and buffet servers. No complaints about service. The clambake was not busy when we attended in September. Afterward, we walked to where the Mantas could be viewed feeding. All-in-all, nice evening, just not as nice as KPC,

    I need a wheelbarrow cuz I'm so full. This was the best seafood buffet I have ever had. I don't even really love lobster, but it was cooked so perfectly, I had to eat two of them lol. Black bean crab legs....seasoned to perfection. Ahi sashimi was fresh and good. Raw oysters, shrimp...all yes yes yes! Prime rib was there too but I stuffed my face so much already I didn't get to try it. Dessert table was wonderful and not dry...it tasted like they baked it fresh. Lilikoi cheesecake was ono....Mac nut caramel chocolate tarts.... Bread pudding....yuummmm. Ice cream bar w all the fixings! And on top of all this, it was awesome ambience at sunset (go around six!) And live music (relaxing local Hawaiian guitar). The service was super good too. I had just finished my last lobster claw on my plate and the runners took my plate away as I finished....water glass was always full......what can I say??!!!! I love you, clambake. Lol the only thing I could've wanted for was maybe sushi or a sushi bar. But that's okay, cuz I avoided starches here like a plague and filled up on pure seafood. Lol.

    I agree with Pete F.'s review. The setting is spectacular. After dinner, take a walk on the unparalleled Mauna Kea beach, and then walk over to where the giant manta rays are feeding on little fish (the pavilion area outside of the indoor restaurant). You can see them up close as they glide around in the clear water. It's pretty awesome.

    Yeah, it's very expensive - it'll put you back a little over $100 after tax and tip (and that doesn't include drinks). But, hey, if you're on vacation, want to treat yourself to an endless buffet of quality lobster, crab, sashimi, prime rib, and jumbo shrimp, this is your place! There are some other little foods to pick from, but those really are the main draws. The tables are positioned on Mauna Kea Beach, which provides a nice backdrop for dinner. Chances are good that with the timing of the dinner (starts at 6PM), you'll also catch a beautiful sunset. One of the downsides, as usual with outdoor eating, was it happened to be a little windy that night and there were some bugs flying around. Not a huge drawback, but were a little annoying at times. Overall, I'd recommend trying it out if you're here to have a good time. Just be aware of the sticker shock when you get the bill. Few other things to keep in mind as well: 1) make reservations beforehand 2) valet-only parking. There are no extra charges for this, other than the tip you give to the valet person. 3) Even though it's pricey, casual attire seems fine 4) Bathrooms are sub-par in cleanliness, considering the price.

    Very expensive ($90+ for adults pre liquor) but totally worth it. The night we went the buffet included prime rib, crab, clams, mahi, sides (rice, corn, etc) but most of all the lobster. This one group of Chinese tourists had a table stacked with 30 of them (they were eating nothing else). It won't be the best lobster you ever had, but it's good, and there's lot's of it. Everyone was so enamored by the lobster at the one we attended, that lines for the lobster were pretty long, and they eventually ran out. But the lobster wasn't the best thing on the menu-- the crab was fantastic as well. The men in our group probably got their full $90 value after multiple lobsters. The kids thankfully ate free as guests at the Mauna Kea, because other than the desert tray, there wasn't that much that appealed (though my littlest did seem to enjoy his first taste of lobster and the make your own sunday bar). Deserts were plentiful as were appetizers (chilled shrimp etc.) The setting is beautiful of Mauna Kea beach. If you aren't staying at the hotel, this is the perfect excuse to visit. Sunset on the beach is beautiful. Tables are set up for families (4-7 people), groups (large tables) and in the front facing the sunset, for couples. White linens completed the setting (for hotel guests and those with advanced reservations....others had to eat on the wooden hau tree tables). Bathrooms were the only downside-- limited and after a day of beach use, not the cleanest. They had a guitar player/singer singing some Hawaiian music, but the lady in the copper tree lounge was honestly better. Still, it was nice to have some entertainment while eating. If you don't like seafood, nonseafood items are limited (just prime rib as a main dish but the prime rib was great too). So would not recommend for small children that don't like seafood (unless they are on a kids eat free promotion if offered by the hotel) or others. Great for seafood lovers, great for couples. Be prepared to pay, however. Our most expensive meal on the island but totally totally worth it and would do it again in a heart beat.

    Skip the fillers! You can get salad and bread anywhere. Load up on the lobsters right away. They are big, tender, meaty, juicy, and cooked just perfectly! The meat is so rich and creamy that you don't even need the drawn butter. Save a tiny bit of room for the self serve ice cream cart at the end. How can you complain about quality all-you-can eat seafood with your feet in the sand and a tropical breeze? ~H-E-A-V-E-N~

    Now weighing in at a whopping $106 after tax and tip is the incredible, amazing, awesome, im going to explode! Seafood fest. As good as it gets in the 808 and probably one of, if not the most expensive buffet in the 808. Fresh lobster, awesome clam chowder, prime rib, sashimi, crabs, jumbo shrimp cocktail, hagen daz sundae bar, there for sure was more but im still working on digesting all that food so my mind isnt working all that right. To me, this is a MUST DO on Saturday nights
