Our Hawaiin beach home for the last few days with dear friends Al & Kathy. Arguably the most beautiful beach in the world.
Wai'ula'ula is on the property of the Hapuna Prince Resort on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Most of the Wai'ula'ula properties are privately owned, but the owners rent them out. For a family that needs more space than a hotel room (or couples that want more privacy) this is a great options. You get all the amenities of staying at the Hapuna Prince and Mauna Kea Resorts, but the comforts of home. Plus some extras! They have a gorgeous and uncrowded pool/spa (saline!) and gym right there, no hotel guests allowed! Ah, paradise. My words do no justice: mauneakeacondo.googlepag… is the link to the one I am staying at. Look at the pictures!

If you want the BEST Huli Huli Chicken/ BBQ Ribs in your whole entire life, GJ's is definitely the spot! Everything is made so fresh on the smoker grill, and served with perfection. You can either buy a whole chicken/Rack or simply order by the plate. Trust me, you'll want to order a whole chicken, its sooooo worth it! The flavors of the chicken is so savory and the meat literally falls off the bone, its so good! There are other choices as far as pastry desserts, it definitely compliments your entree! Owners are VERY friendly and nice, and always so grateful for their customers. Definitely an island thing. I will forever crave GJ's huli huli chicken!!
unreal how good the chicken is. Seriously the best food on the island.
The best barbecue I've had in my life, anywhere. I've got enough grey hairs and travel miles to have had a pretty broad taste of barbecue. Nothing comes close to GJ's. They're a little hard to find since they wander and set up in several spots around the island. They do their barbecuing in the bed of an old truck that's been converted into a trailer that is filled with coals. They set up a little tent nearby. If you're downwind, they're easy to find... actually, they're hard to avoid: something about their smell reaches into your primitive carnivore brain and drags you in. I normally get my dose on Friday in Kawaihae (the Blue Dragon's parking lot). Thursday in Hawi.... other days, ask a local. You're guaranteed to end up in a happy protein coma. If you're into beer, grab a bag of their home-made pork rinds - they fit together perfectly.

This place was amazing, beautiful and SUPER relaxing. Erica and Derek (the owners) were super helpful, made an amazing soy free breakfast for me (every morning) and were really helpful in helping us plan our day's tourist activities. We stayed in the "Dream room" which has an amazing view of the volcanos and has a comfortable window seat to view the stars at night....The wind through the sugar cane out back sounded like waves - only enhanced more when the stream was full of rushing water. By the time we left, it felt like home and we didn't want to go....
Very Cozy and Relaxing!! We rented out all 3 rooms for the weekend of our wedding and we absolutely LOVED it! We had 6 people and a baby and it really felt like a home away from home. The fresh rainbow papayas that were stocked in the fridge were Delicious and we really enjoyed the company of her 2 cats, Mango and Lily, since we all missed our furry friends at home. If you aren't too fond of cats, they'll leave you alone. Otherwise, they'll be wonderful companions while you're away from your own. The jacuzzi, outdoor shower, and streamside lounge area were incredible additions to the suite, especially for our mini-honeymoon. Bring some warm clothes as it can be pretty chilly in the evenings and stock up on allergy meds (regardless of if you normally suffer from them or not) because Everything will be blooming, which just adds to the beauty of everything. We were so sad to leave, but we will definitely be back!
We stayed I late Aug. early Sept. and it was a hurricane season, very hot and humid with no breeze. So, things to know: 1. No screens on doors or air conditioning. 2. There are Mosquitos 3. There were no fans until we asked and they were produced immediately. 4. It's in a fairly dense residential neighborhood of average low rent quality. 5. The spa is a tub 6. It is called an "inn" but there are no hospitality services...coffee and granola w/ almond milk....no cream/ half & half. 7. Be sure to stop and pick up something for the fridge or it's a bit of a drive back to town. Overall, there are not a lot of plush choices for stays in Waimea...this is a comfortable option just know what you are getting into. It's more like a vacation rental at someone's home. It was clean and the hostess was as accommodating as she could be...not sure if I would stay there again.

Anuenue Ice Cream

PO Box 2941

Reviews:
Without a doubt, the best shave ice on the Big Island. Homemade syrups make them special, generous helpings of it make them flavorful. There is ice cream for those who don't love shave ice, but I've never tried it. Also, this is one place that offers azuki beans with your ice. You gotta try it!
We are regulars here, and enjoy their shave ice and ice-cream. I like all of the tropical flavors of shave ice but I almost always eat the ice-cream. Soo creamy! Service is superb-- welcoming, and very patient even when the line is long. No tables, just a bench if you are lucky enough to get it. I always see just one person behind the counter, and there's always a line of people waiting. The longest I've ever waited is 10-15 minutes, and it's worth the wait every time. Great stop for beach days!
Giant Giant, big as your head shave ice for a low price! Super fine shaved quality and super friendly service. Delicious syrups! Only a bench for seating, but worth it. And they have different sizes. The small is huge. $5.50 for a big and small!

Terrible food!!!! The only decent food was the garlic truffle fries.
Simply the best restaurant on the Big Island. This is the first and last place I visit every time I am on the island and for good reason... the freshest ingredients, creative dishes with classic Hawaiian twists, great service, and a wine list that makes me wonder why I pack wine whenever I come to the island. It is certainly worth a drive from any of the resorts on the Kohala coast... and I consider it a destination in and of itself. I always find myself ordering whatever they have on special that night. They always have great fish preparations (try the Ono and Opakaka). One thing that sets this place apart from many other places (including the mainland) is the saucier. Most dishes are served with some sort of sauce, and the saucier does an amazing job. Bottom line is that this place could compete head-to-head with any of the places in the bay area. Go out of your way to visit.
A solid upscale dining experience. We ordered the cavatelli (excellent), the MAHI MAHI (delicious), filet mignon (average), and the purse for desert (outstanding!). Service was attentive and the atmosphere was decent. To me, it's all about the food and Merriman's did not disappoint. For the price point, I'd expect really excellent food and top service and in that regard it may be slightly overpriced (hence the four stars and not five). All and all, we had a great meal.

The heaven of the food is well paired with warm and friendly service. But watch out for the mud pie dessert. Whoa! #FeedingFrenzy Gorgeous views. Extremely comfortable space. Kids can play in the yard down below in the yard by the ocean. Our family had a lovely evening here together and Leilani was an absolutely fantastic server and a pleasure to meet.
Beautiful sunset. Incredible food (perfectly cooked ahi steak and lamb chops) and A+ service. Local ingredients, food tastes like it was meant to. Owner sat and chatted with us for 30 minutes about the good life, Hawaiian culture, and the complexities of mixing the modern world with the rest. Where are you, and why are you not here? I will be back
Hands down the best place we ate on our two weeks on the Big Island, the calamari is to die for, the filet is so yummy, my son loved the pork taco's, my hubby and dad loved the ribs. Did I mention the service was amazing? Thank you Angie for giving my little Gecko hunter the baby gecko, she will remember you forever! This is a hidden gem, and right above the beach! We will be back!

Tropical Dreams

Reviews:
***NOTE*** This is the ice cream factory in Kamuela. For the Tropical Dreams location in Hawi that is listed in guidebooks, search for "KOHALA COFFEE MILL" on Yelp. That location is conjoined with the cafe and is not listed as Tropical Dreams. Tropical Dreams' ice cream factory has a little shop that only sells packaged ice cream. No scoops, sandwiches or coffee-- that would be at the Kohala Coffee Mill in Hawi. Sizes range from about a cream cheese container (~8oz; $3.50), to 3 gallons!! The smallest size is about 2 big scoops worth. Plenty of flavors to choose from, at least in the pint sizes, but they usually don't have every flavor on the board in every size. The ice cream is most likely the best ice cream on the island. It's not something I crave when I'm on the mainland, but I can't take a trip to the Big Island without stopping here. They have a bench outside of the shop where you can enjoy your ice cream, but most people purchase here to take home. There is a big parking lot.
Warning, they do not sell by the scoop here. With how amazing this Ice Cream is, how am I the first to review this place. Everyone on the Island of Hawaii knows this brand and how truly outstanding this stuff is. Coffee shops on the island are known extremely popular because they serve this stuff. So skip the store or the hunt to find the one you like and go right to the source. We came to only get one for the few days we had remaining and ended up buying three tubs. It is so good I have requested yelp add a 6th star for truly exceptional places.
Two stars for the venue only. The ice cream is good. Stopped by in May 2015 to try their ice cream. Although you can purchase here, it's not visitor friendly. One small room with a refrigerator and a wooden bench outside. Not very inviting or comfortable. I do recommend buying their ice cream out in town at storefronts that have chairs, tables, etc., just not here at their production facility.

We ate at Pau 2 times in past week, noticed the subtle changes of new ownership right away --menu is simple, food is fresh and very delicious always. I've never had a bad meal there ever, Its a small cozy place unpretentious and easy. Wishing the new owners the best of luck and a very prosperous future! Highly recommend this fresh local eatery.
Great service and excellent Classico pizza. Saw a small black cockroach on the floor and simply ignored it until it got squished dead. Then his family of at least two more made two unexpected visits on the table to let us know they missed him. This is the only restaurant in the big island that had cockroaches that are not shy to die when meeting tourists.
We met some friends here for a nice dinner out. The table they had ready for us was perfect. We all tried different plates and everyone enjoyed our dinner. I had some pasta and loved it. The service was great and food was so nice. I would like to stop by again. Mahalo

Reviews:
I am truly shocked by how good these reviews are. With all the great restaurants in the area, this place should not be on anyone's list, especially considering the prices. My family (7 people, all adults) went to this restaurant on the fourth night of our vacation and the food by the pool at our hotel is leaps and bounds better than this place. I will say I am giving this place 2 stars because the restaurant is pretty and the people were nice. That's the extent of the present experience. First, they do not store their wine properly. We ordered white and rose, neither were even chilled. Like, not at all. Room temperature at best. We had to put ice in our glasses while the rest of the bottle sat on ice to chill. The salads were decent, but $17 dollars for a Caesar salad not much bigger than my hand is a bit ridiculous. Then dinner came. My Mom got their surf and turf special with veal and ono (I think). The ono was really odd, pink in the middle like seared ahi. It was edible. The veal was an absolutely inedible hockey puck. I mean petrified it was so over cooked. She sent it back and they brought another peice out less than 3 minutes later that was just as bad. Turns out they are pre-cooked. WHAT?! Who pre-cooks veal?! It was awful. I had the bone-in steak. The meat itself was good, but not $60 good. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were straight out of a box. I'm not kidding. I'm positive they were from a box. They literally tasted like water. Now, I know the island is still being effected from the huricane and restaurants may not be able to get all the ingredients they need for their menu, but if that's the case, TAKE IT OFF THE MENU! Don't serve boxed potatoes! That's inexcusable. Several of us got dishes with the potatoes and we all said the same thing once we left Two people got the pork chop. The meat was cooked to perfection. The sweet potato "gnocchi" was nothing even remotely close to gnocchi. It was a strange sweet potato pancake that's then breaded and fried. It tasted like a mozerella stick with potato instead of cheese. And not in a good way. The filet mignon was alright. No real complaint, just not anything to write home about. For the price, this place is NOT worth it! Go to the Grill at the Four Seasons. Their prices are similar and their food is incredible! No idea why this place is getting such good reviews. I mean, are the employees writing them?
We had the best meal of our trip tonight at manta. Blew away our meal at the four seasons. The wait staff was second to none. My children left nothing on their plates, and no one ordered from the kids menu. The soufflé was the best - and we have dined at Michelin chefs tables. I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly.
We had an amazing dinner here. We were seated outside with the most beautiful view. Our server was excellent, though a tad hard to understand. She was friendly and took pictures of us. She had great knowledge of the food that was being served and answered all of our questions. We were never waiting long for another item to be brought out. The wine menu was expansive and had good selections for by the glass, which was good for us, since we didn't want to buy a bottle. The wine was expensive, of course, but your on vacation at a beautiful resort, what do you expect? We were very happy with all four wines we tried. Especially the wines from France. Our food was AMAZING. Definitely the best out of the whole trip. We loved that we were offered a free little bite in the beginning, too. The breads were also delicious! I had moon fish and my husband had ahi. We were both sooo happy. Our appetizer was crab ravioli. We ordered the smaller portion size, but I'd even order the whole portion for an entree. Dessert was good, but probably the most lacking. All in in all, we had a great experience here. We desperately wanted to come back but they are closed on Sunday and Monday's. We'll cherish our dining experience here for the rest of our lives, since it was the best of our whole honeymoon.
