Great tasting, fast Indian Food, right in the middle of Kailua Town! Small, but nice store front, with very limited seating area. As the other reviewers mentioned, this place is meant for take out, or seating in the shared outside table space in front of Coffee Talk or Mexico Lindo. By the way, they have a Yelp sticker on their front door, so I am sure that they are attentive to our reviews :) Upon walking in, we were greeted by a friendly counter person, who asked if this was our first time there. He generously provided a small sample of their 4 main curries: Coconut, spinach, sweet tiki masala , and a brown Madras curry. We selected the Coconut curry with shrimp and choice of fried tofu as the side. The coconut curry is spicy, creamier than the other curries, and contained sweetness from the coconut. Completely different from Japanese, or Chinese types of curries. They also added large slices of tomatoes, which added some tanginess to the sauce. Nice sized shrimp that paired well with the complex flavors of the curry ingredients. There is no way that I could cook this dish at home. We loved the fried tofu cubes, which was the side order selected for our entree. Generous amount that filled two compartments in the Styrofoam lunch plate. I loved the taste and smell of the yellow aromatic rice that they provide with your meal. After tasting all four samples, I also ordered the spinach curry with chicken plate with the spicy eggplant as the side order. This curry was more similar to a Hawaiian entree, squid luau, minus the coconut milk. They included (3) small chicken thighs with your plate, and the aromatic rice. The spicy eggplant is over-the-top hot, and I don't recommend eating this dish for anyone under the age of 26! Downside - the tiki masala tasted salty and looked a little greasy. The tandoori machine is also broken, so no Naan orders. 31 YELPS REVIEW CHALLENGE #14/31

The food here is okay, but is a bit pricey for the quality. There was a short Asian girl working the front counter when I went here and she just has atrocious customer service skills. Maybe I'm used to a higher standard being from the mainland, but I expect friendliness, attention to detail and earnestness when being served in any establishment. As I was eating the girl was rude to each customer who came in.

We had a spicy eggplant, roti paratha and a veg samosa in lunch.. If you really like a extreme spicy food eggplant is a good option. Samosa was too good.. Just loved it.

The kitchen here is disgusting! I walked around in between the restaurant and times to throw something away in the dumpster and was horrified by what I saw in the kitchen. Dirty pots and pans stacked on the floor which was not clean at all and even things stacked outside on the ground next to the dumpster. If you want clean food, don't eat here. Seems like the staff doesn't care at all about cleanliness. Next time you want to eat here, take a short walk around back.

I don't require ambiance if the food is a hit (hole in the wall, schmole in the wall), but for me, this place was too much off the mark. The curries had a really sweet tang to them, and my beloved naan bread was doughy... as in, dare I say, undercooked. I'm not an expert by any means of regional differences in Indian food -- I just know that I like it prepared a la Cafe Taj Mahal/Cafe Maharani. Our cashier was very friendly, though, and portion-wise, you get a good deal of food. I just wish that the food suited my tastes!

Well never had Indian food quite like this. Different from the many Indian food restaurants I've eaten at but it was hot and delicious! Chicken tikka- sweet spaghetti like sauce with chunks of chicken. Very delicious Mix veggie- kindve coco nutty but reminded me of loaded mashed potatoes. Samosas were good but maybe a little undercooked. The guy ringing me up was beautiful so ya:)!!

As hubby and I are Vegan we were looking for a vegan friendly option to enjoy! We also love Indian food (Or any food, really) so we thought this would be a good option! We called in our order a head of time, and when I got there the service was very friendly and quick. Always a plus! As others have mentioned the place is small, but you can eat just a couple stores down at the tables outside - which we did. It was quite nice. We ordered the curried potato masala and spinach tofu korma, both of which were okay - but honestly nothing to write home about. The spinach tofu was better then the curried potato masala though. To be honest - I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. If I was in the area, I might stop. Especially since they do have more vegan options that we didn't try today.

This review is for the India Cafe food booth at the Farmer's Market in Kailua on Thursday nights located in the parking lot by Longs and Whole Foods. I visited this booth last Thursday around 6:00 p.m. The line was pretty long, which I took for a good sign. I saw a picture showing a large, tall cup of fresh watermelon juice for only $3. I ordered two cups of watermelon juice, one for me and one for my boyfriend, along with a plate of butter chicken masala which cost $10. The young woman helping us was extremely pleasant and friendly, and the service was quick. However, the food and drink were a huge disappointment. The watermelon juice was served in tiny, short plastic cups instead of in the tall cup clearly shown in the advertisement. The chicken - a huge shock for Indian food which is normally so flavorful - was the blandest food I have ever tasted. It actually tasted like there were no spices at all in the sauce. None. The yellow-colored rice was extremely mushy and overcooked. The "salad," while fresh and crisp, consisted of a very tiny portion of greens only with no other vegetables - hard to call it salad, more like lettuce. The zucchini side dish was very soft and mushy, but it did have a good flavor at least. I found myself filled with regret that I did not order something else from one of India Cafe's many neighboring booths at the Farmer's Market, and wishing I could turn back time.

Okay, first of all--I don't know why this place only has 3 stars. Maybe it's because people can't handle a little spice; and India Cafe sure brings the spicy. Secondly, I actually like this place a lot. Yeah, I'm a haole, so people are probably like "ohhh you don't understand Indian food. blah blah blah" but you know, I spent two weeks in South India, I teach in a school district in PA that has a huge Indian population, my students' moms send in food with their children to give to me because they know I'm addicted to Indian food, AND I spend a lot of time looking up recipes from Kerala and trying to recreate them in my home--so I needless to say I have some foundational knowledge. Third: I was reading some reviews where people were saying "oh I heard the chef talk about adding tomato paste" or "they don't seem to use fresh spices." --folks, folks...let's be serious here IT'S A PLATE LUNCH PLACE. It was not meant to be 5 star dining xD So given all these pieces of information, I think that India Cafe is pretty swag for quick, cheap S. Indian food. Now, on to the important part--what I ate from India Cafe. 1. Spicy eggplant. I ate this in a house with no a/c, during the hottest part of the day with almost zero trade winds. I'm good with spice, I really am--but it was the perfect storm of scary spice levels and super hot weather. I may have almost died--but it was worth it because the eggplant was soooo good. On an island where people think tabasco is super spicy. . . this was refreshing (kind of like the two bottles of water I consumed after eating it). I'd eat this again. . . as long as I had a/c ;) 2. Channa Masala: This is pretty much why I am giving this place a 4 instead of a 5--too much salt :( It was really overpowering to the rest of the flavors in this dish and that disappointed me a little. 3. Vegetable Sambar--So this must be a Tamilian dish (at least I think it is) because it's not like the sambar I ate in Kerala and. . . after going on India Cafe's website, I noticed they had a thing about Tamil new year, so I'm just going to assume (I also looked up recipes for Tamilian style sambar soooo...:P). It was pretty nice. I enjoyed eating it to wash down the eggplant and channa. I just really, really like sambar though. Take me back to the days of eating sambar and idli (or vada, I prefer vada) for breakfast and I'll be happy. Next time. . . I'm going for the masala dosai :) To finish this off. . . I am going to confess one thing: I am incredibly partial to S. Indian food. I like it more than N. Indian food and so . . . the fact that India Cafe sells a lot of S. Indian inspired stuff, it just gets brownie points in my book. Not to mention it's plate lunch style---so it's quick and easy. If you are just looking for quick, tasty, spicy, S. Indian food, India Cafe is a great place to go for lunch :).

Avoid at all cost. It's quite difficult to make Indian food taste so bad. Naan bread is either undercooked or roasted like a cookie. Rice had no flavor or even salt to it. Butter chicken tasted like tomato cream soup with chicken. Vegetarian entries are the worst. Everything appears to be made from frozen entries. You have better luck cooking those yourself.... Just dumped 25$ worth of food in garbage...and yelping for a good restaurant.

Pleasantly surprised. Small restaurant in a strip mall, with only three tables. Meal was excellent. Looks like mostly takeouts.

India Cafe hits the spot when I'm windward side hanging with the boyfriend far from my favorite Indian restaurant on King St. I hadn't realized that India Cafe has a food cart in the NEX food court, which I've been to. This restaurant location is tiny with a few tables and chairs indoors but plenty more outdoor eating. It's really a takeout restaurant inspired by takeout places and eateries in Malaysia per the website. The boyfriend and I shared three vegetarian/vegan specialties: spicy eggplant (super spicy, too much for little old me, but still good), chana masala (my staple! always good), spinach tofu korma (boyfriend is a fan of korma, I'd only recently tried). The plate comes with rice, raita, and dal (kind of bland that day). We also ordered veggie samosas, which were a little different from the ones I've eaten before, maybe more like a flaky pastry on the outside. The dipping sauce was sweet chili sauce, which I am familiar with but do not typically pair with samosas. Interesting combination! I like! I want to go back and try other veggie options!

    (4)
  • Andrea H.

I was disappointed with the food. The samosas were too heavy on the filo and grease with very little filling. The rice was flavorful, but it was clumped together as if it had been sitting out for hours. The Korma Chicken was served on the bone in a pool of runny sauce. The only palatable item on my plate was the cauliflower cabbage dish. The amount of food would easily serve multiple people; although I was only ordering for one. The price is too expensive if you are ordering for one. I ended up throwing away most of the food. Single servings for one person and a corresponding price should be considered. I had planned to dine at the restaurant, so I was surprised when my order was served in multiple, styrofoam containers and packed in a bag to go. Fortunately all of the food was piping hot. Seating space is limited at the restaurant with only two small tables inside and two small tables outside. Based on the quality, taste and texture of the food, I will not come back here.

Found this gem while wondering around in Kailua They have Awesome food! There's a shortage of Indian food on Oahu and I was so happy to just find this place. My friend and I ordered the okra curry along with chicken curry, chana masala, garlic naan, roti, dosa and mango lassi. The chicken curry was aromatic and flavorful. The lassi was sweet and delicious with bits of mango. The roti and naan were crispy with a delicious light taste. All the curries were spicy with just the right amount of salt. The staff was super friendly and relaxed, I recommend this spot to anyone who is into Indian food.

Unlike other reviewers I had good service for a take out place. The clerk was friendly and polite. Food was pretty average at best. I had lamb masala okra curry and nan. I love Indian food and wish there was a better option in kailua.

  • James L.

Had high hopes going in. Prices and selection seemed promising. Had heard from friends that it was tentatively "OK." Unfortunately, my first impression was that someone must have inadvertently spilled way too much of all the wrong spices into our dinner. Literally inedible. I should say it may have just been an off-night, but I was decidedly disappointed.

So whenever I am in kailua I drive by india cafe and dream about stopping in and dining on some indian cuisine However they are never open that early and so my dreams are just that dreams. However today on my day off I was able to afford myself the luxury of checking this place out and let me tell you the wait was definitely worth every last bite! I found parking in what might just be the worst parking lot ever and made my way over to this little hole in the wall. For such a small shop the menu was fairly extensive with both meat and vegetarian options to select from. So I ordered the ultimate veggie platter which was three choices of veggie items. I opted for spinach tofu korma, mix before masala, and chana raita. The meal came out in under five minutes and I hopped, skipped and jumped into my car and literally scarfed down the entire meal. Whew! I must have been reaaaallllly hungry....seriously! The meal also came with rice and a lentil soup which only served to make the meal even better. All kidding aside the food is definitely scrumptious and I look forward to going back again!

I love Indian food! The offerings here all tasted the same and the portions were small. They seemed reluctant to give you a normal-sized serving of anything - why??? And the naan bread wasn't up to par. You'll find better Indian cuisine elsewhere.

  • Brittney K.

Dirty and not in a good hole in the wall way. Rude girl at front, food was horrid. Served bottom of the barrel spicy eggplant and they didn't even have enough to give a full serving. We would have ordered something else if we knew we were going to pay $5 for the last two tablespoons of it. Just terrible.

My family used to frequent India Cafe when it was located on Kapahulu. I was so sad to see them go, and FINALLY made it to Kailua to eat some Indian food yesterday. First of all, this is not a sit-down, table-cloth, water-glass restaurant. This is Indian take-out. Even though they have "down-sized" from their kapahulu location, the owners are still busy making food for their Kailua, NEX and UH take-out places. Anyways, I used to LOVE the shrimp curry, but I didn't see it on the menu and got the spinach chicken curry instead. The guy working there let us try all the curries first too!! :) The pork curry was also really good. I wasn't a huge fan of their sweet tikka masala or the super spicy malaysian sambal, but my fambam loved them both. I got the cauliflower and broccoli for my vegetable-side. I also tried the curried potatoes and spinach tofu. I probably could have eaten just the sides for dinner, they were so good!! We also ordered samosas and dosai. Nothing too memorable there, but I'd come back just to support this place, even if they ran out of curry and veggies. lol. Yes, the prices are a little higher than your average chinese take-out, but I would come here over pandas any day.

The food here is delicious! I do not know too much about indian food so the server here was very friendly and helped us out to choose a dish that would be best. The coconut curry chiken with chala masala that I had ordered was sooo delicious very flavorful . It was served on a "banana leaf" plate which I thought was a nice touch

I just love their food!!!! I always eat the Chicken Tikka Masala and I love the curried potatoes. The prices are ok and they accept debit/credit cards as well.

I like! Party in the mouth when you eat Indian food! The ocra, chicken curry, the chicken spinach thing was really good. I wasn't impressed with the samosa though because it was really oily. Service was pretty fast and they were friendly. Too bad they closed the Kapahulu restuarant, Kailua is the "main" restaurant now. They also have a version of their restaurant at the NEX and at UH.

Indian food on the Windward Side... who knew? Yelp knew. I used my trusty Yelp App to find India Café in Kailua, and I'm glad I did. The food was rich and flavorful. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. The choices and quantity were overwhelming. And the price was quite reasonable. While we absorbed the menu, we were offered and given samples of several dishes. This should have made deciding easier, but they were all so good that it didn't really help. Our order which included 2 exotic drinks was enough to feed 4 and cost less than $30. Yes, I'm looking forward to my leftovers for lunch tomorrow. But this place is small! It really is a take-out only place. There are no tables inside and only two tiny tables on the sidewalk out front. We were lucky to get one, but I wouldn't count on it happening again. There was a sign about addition seating elsewhere; but by luck, we didn't need it this time. I'm very pleased Yelp pointed me to India Café in Kailua.

I stopped in because I saw that they had dosas on the menu. I ordered the masala dosa. It was a mess with way too much filling tearing apart the dosa. The filling was just ok. The sambar was thick and tasted like the filling. The coconut chutney came in a little cup and was practically frozen. I had to dump it into the sambar to melt it. This was a necessary step because without the coconut flavor the dish would have been too boring to eat. I ended up eating the dosa and left the filling.

I stopped in for some quick dinner to take home, and got the Chicken Tikka Masala, and 2 of the types of naan - the garlic one, and the cheese one. As far as the various Indian foods I've tried, this was mediocre at best. The place is clean, the cashier was ok, and the wait wasn't too bad. Strictly going off the food, this was the toughest naan I have ever eaten. One piece for about $3 - $4 I think I paid. It was almost boarderline the chew of a thin bagle, or something much much harder. It was not very easy to tear like any other naan I've had before. I cant really give much objective about the masala, since I have less sense of taste now with a cold - but it did have really large, chewy pieces of chicken. Not so special from something that could have been microwaved up from costco.

Ok, I have a hard time with this considering I lived in San Francisco and have experienced some excellent Indian food. There's not much to choose from here though, as far as Indian, Mediterranean, or Arabic food is concerned. God I miss Frisco for their authentic, diverse foods. The food wasn't great and didn't seem very authentic (and it is overpriced). $17 for me alone to eat and I finished all of my food. The curry is not great and the chicken had a lot of bones in it, making it seem like there is more food than there really is. The menu needs to grow, I think. Add some vidaloos, different types of naan, etc. Overall, mainly needs a menu adjustment.

Between beef curry plate lunches and Japanese curry at Curry House, it's easy for me to get a curry fix when I need it. But every once in a while I get the craving for something more authentic and more aromatic, if not with more heat. I happened across India Cafe when foraging for dinner in Kailua town one night, and I've been back many times since. They do have different types of curry, but I think I've settled on the chicken tikka masala. I'll leave it to the Indian food connoisseurs to hash it out over whether their food is authentic or watered-down. Apparently some folks like it; others don't. But for my local island palate the chicken tikka fits the bill, with spices you can smell and taste. True, the chicken tikka is probably meant to be mild as far as heat goes, and it was, which is just the way I like it. And I've always found the staff to be friendly, and I get a kick out of watching the Bollywood music videos while waiting for the food. :)

Went here because it was the closest Indian food restaurant and was told it was supposably really good. There are only 2 very tiny tables inside and one outside, all of which are wobbly. I ordered rice, a chicken dish, veggie dish, and their bread. While waiting at the wobbly table I noticed bugs crawling around everywhere, that looked like fleas. I was given my food and left, but then realized they did not give me my chicken, so I had to go back in and ask for it. The girl was extremely ditzy and did not seem to comprehend much. I get my chicken and leave again, only to notice that I did not get my rice I ordered. The chicken comes with rice but I ordered an extra rice. I then went back in and the girl told me I never ordered rice, and she could ring me up for another rice if I wanted. I said no and left. The food itself was alright, but it was an extremely small portion, so I ended up having to get more food on the way home.

Tiny little place in kailua town. Definitely more of a take out place as there are just 2 tiny tables and if you're eating there you'll probably be staring at the butts of all the people waiting to get their take out orders. The chicken tika masala was mediocre with slightly odd sour taste, but the chicken curry was surprisingly good as was the the roti. Unfortunately they were out of naan when we went which is usually a great litmus test of how good an indian place is. But all in all, not too bad and I'm just happy I can find decent Indian where I live on the Winward side.

They have good service, but the food is neither authentic, nor does it taste great. This place says it's South Indian, but the majority of the things on their menu were North Indian. I thought it was a North indian place at first, to be completely honest with you. Because it was a South Indian place serving mostly North Indian food, it made sense that things tasted... well, off. The chicken tikka masala was SWEET, and bland. Both of which I did not enjoy. The naan was burnt on one side, and too thick and doughy on the other. The only thing I really remotely enjoyed was probably the chana masala that came with the $29 dinner for two special, which would have been an awesome deal, had the food been up to par. The chana masala actually had a taste, but it wasn't spicy enough. South Indian food is supposed to be spicier than North Indian food. Step it up, India Cafe.

This place is really for takeout. The girl at the counter tried to be helpful about ordering off of their strange menu (you do combinations from several columns of food choices).. It's overpriced for what was probably the worst Indian food I ever had. I guess my standards are a little higher because I'm an Indian girl from Jersey. I was totally disappointed, and even more so after the kitchen screwed up my order. It just wasn't worth the calories. I'll stick to cooking Indian at home instead of eating it out once in a while, unless something better comes along or they make some serious improvements. The Indian in me was also sad because I don't want people leaving this place thinking that this is what Indian food is like. It isn't.

This is the worst Indian food I have ever had. The management should be ashamed to sell this crap as "indian" food.

    (1)
  • Colin D.

Should be called 'Non-India Cafe'. Dosa was soggy, masala had no flavor and did not taste fresh, chai tasted like cinnamon oil, mango lassi was a thick, almost beige smoothie not bright yellow with a good consistency. Even condiments and sambar did not taste fresh or authentic. Needs serious help.

I really love this restaurant! It is very small - best for takeout - the seating is outside on the patio - one or two tables just for them, and a few more in the shared area of the shopping center - which is a pretty good place to eat, but sometimes a little busy. I prefer to carry it home, but I have eaten it on site a few times. The flavors are delicious and the pricing is very reasonable for Hawaii especially. I have heard more than one friend say that this is among the best Indian food on the island. I am so glad it exists! I LOVE Indian food! I have ordered several dishes, and everything is well made and delicious, but I love tikka, curry, and korma the best! Their naan is really delicious too! Just remember this is a simple and casual place. It isn't a restaurant where you're going to sit in a booth with low lighting. Instead you will sit at an umbrella table in a trendy, cute little beach town and enjoy some sun and watch tourists and locals as they walk the shopping center. They have a couple of fun festivals - I always want to go, but it ends up being on busy weekends when I can't go - sad for me, but I bet it is a fun thing. It looks like they have some entertaining performances and of course the delicious food!

Not only the worst Indian food I've ever had, but perhaps the worst food I've ever had from a restaurant. The food was either bland or just gross. The naan was unevenly cooked (thin in the middle, and doughy on the outside). Skip this and get something (almost anything) else.

EXCELLENT! The food is out of this world!! The customer service is FANTASTIC! Super friendly and helpful employees who seem happy. I used to buy from the India Cafe wagon, and am glad that there is now a storefront on the Windward side. I patroned the store front twice this week with my husband, who is a picky eater and a foodie, and my husband thought the food was as AMAZING as I did. I love the Okra dish as well as the Lamb Sambal, Fish Sambal and the Shrimp curry. The only suggestion I have is that maybe the rice could be cooked slightly moister to accommodate the asian palate, we tend to like our rice more sticky. Otherwise, the food is absolutely AMAZING, rich in flavor and DIVINE.

Yuck! I am not too crazy about this place. Ok fine, maybe not yuck, but this restaurant could be much better. I had some kind of curry...I don't remember what kind I ordered, it was that bad. I just remember the curry itself was very blan. All I tasted was bitterness and too much star anise. I dont remember what i ordered since this was about a year ago. The yellow rice that came with the food was also bad. Absolutely no flavor. What indian restaurant has bad flavors? The only positive thing about this restaurant is their can Thai ice teas. A lot of places do not sell can Thai drinks, so this is why I added an extra star for this rating. I will just stick to the kapahulu location. That indian restaurant is spot on.

FAST & FILLING I actually had a good experience here. I was looking for a quick, filling, satisfying lunch and India Cafe fit the bill. I got the chicken tikka masala with channa masala as my veggie and was happy with both. The portions on the chicken are very generous (although it could've used a bit more salt) and the channa was excellent all around. For a fast food lunch, I'll take this over McDonalds any day.

If I could give it no stars I would. Its a cool little place when you walk in. Got the Bollywood stuff on the screen. Then you order and everything you order they do not have. No naan seriously. So you go back and forth and before you know it the guy taking your order has actually told you what's available which is nothing we wanted but your there you want to eat so OK? What just happened here? Food is salty and way below any kind of decent standard. The cooks where in the back ( or should I say on the side alley there) smoking some very peculiar cigarettes instead of working. Unbelievable. I would skip this one. I heard this is the same owners that own that place on university. NO WAY!!!??? That place is Awesome. I have to say as we gave this place 4 tries before my wife and I said that's it. If you cant order whats on the menu than you should not be open at all.

I have been eating at India Cafe since they had a restaurant in Kapahulu (Sadly, It's closed) and I love their food! I go to India Cafe twice a month. I really enjoy their buffet, but do take out sometimes. The food is delicious. I am not sure I should call it authentic, but their curries & rotis are good. Good portion of food, usually I eat at the restaurant and take the rest home. Oh and Mango lassie is sooooo tasty. Service is pretty good. Don't forget this place has a stamp card.

  • Lauren S.

This place was lame. They were out of mostly everything stereotypically awesome indian food (tikka masala, roti, etc). Pretty pricey for such average stuff but the family deal offers several entrees and sides for $30...but if everything wasn't so average it might be a better deal!

    (2)
  • Lilian N.

The veggie dishes are the best items on their menu. I'm no expert in Indian cuisine, but the lamb and fish dishes we had were average, and the rice was very dry! The gal upfront was friendly and helpful, which is mostly why I'm giving this place 3 stars. If I decide to give this place another shot, I'd probably go with the veggie platter and also try the naan.

  • Samantha V.

I really had high hopes. I'm a Big fan of indian food... this place was Horrible! I ordered the chicken tiki masala, vegetable masala and an order of naan. The chicken Tiki Masala was somehow bland...I know indian food right? supposed to = rich flavorful spice filled food. The only real flavor was sweet and extremely unsatisfying! I think that the spices are only added for color. I thought that the vegetables were a safe bet... NO, they looked and tasted like canned carrots and green beans and once again were extremely bland. Now the Naan, that should have been fail safe, nope, it was oily and doughy on one side and burned on the other. I ended up throwing out my $13 lunch and will not be returning. So sad I really wanted to like this place. Having pics of your family in indian clothing doesn't guarantee good quality and tasting food. Perhaps it just shows that they are trying a little to hard to convince us that the food is authentic.

India Cafe just opened a new location in Kailua! They ended up taking over the space from Kailua Bar-BQ & Okazuya. This new location is extremely well designed, bright, clean and appealing. Aesthetically, the restaurant is great the food however is a different story. The food India Cafe offers is flat tasting and some dishes just didn't taste right. In fact their food tasted very similar to the India Cafe Express truck that used to dole out slop in the Don Quixote parking lot. I thought that by having a permanent location they would be able to improve the quality of their food. Unfortunately, they still offer the same bland tasting, uninspiring food that is not indicative of true Indian Cuisine. I think some will find the India Cafe satisfying and unique. However, I am not one of them and I feel that most people who know and enjoy authentic Indian food will be left wanting much more. On a side note: I hope that this location is just undergoing growing pains which can plague so many new restaurants. However, India Cafe is a well established so I fell this is really not a viable excuse. PS. Their riata is a little different from what I am used to but, I thought it was well done. To bad they didn't give a bigger portion.

I wish their food was as Delicious and intriguing as the menu made it out to be. Unfortunately the food is just "ehhhh". I have tried this place a couple of times. I agree with previous posts about the lack of flavor and inconsistent options. Every time I have ate there at least 1 or 2 items are not available. Both times there was no Naan.....really?? One positive is the spicy eggplant. If only the other food had this quality this place would easily be 4 stars! Save you money and try making your own Indian at home. It can't be as bad as this place.

I wish there were more options for Indian food :( This is a take out place that specializes in greasy versions of classic Indian dishes. The menu is cool. Parking is horrible and seating is virtually non-existent. Unless I am desperate I won't be going back.

I'm not a big spicy person, but I have never tasted Indian food so bland in my life. I had the mini vegetarian bowl, which was "basmati rice" (NOT basmati rice.. It was your basic cheap white rice made yellow from curry runoff) and your choice of entree. I had veggie masala. Super disappointed. It was edible, but it was definitely a huge let down. Two stars because the price was good and the service was excellent.

An excellent and price reasonable spot for true indian cuisine. Don't skip this wonderful cafe.

Came here for some after beach lunch around 1 and there was quite a lot of people waiting in line and waiting for their food. When I finally ordered they said it was about a 10-15 minute wait, which was more like a 20 min wait. I ordered the vegetarian mix with spicy tofu sambal and the spicy eggplant, which also came with a small bowl of lentil soup for $7.75 + tax. The food came out hot and spicy, just how I like it. The tofu was fried instead of sauteed in the sauce. The curries for both were flavorful and good. The lentil soup was really good and had a few small chucks of carrots and long beans?. Well the kicker and reason for the 2 stars is the rice that seemed to be old because it was hard and clumpy, and just inedible. My uncle got the cheese naan which was pretty good though. But overall, i wouldnt come here again if i was in kailua.

i can agree with most of the post on here, but as of lately they have been getting better at making the food more tasteful. i dont know about anyone else but their food give me the IBS but i like eating it. so i will suffer. it is not a eat in spot they have a couple tables outside and one inside. expect to pay about $45 for 2 people take out.

I have to, unfortunately, agree with the reviewers who didn't love this food. It wasn't bad, just not particularly authentic. my husband did really enjoy his chicken curry, so I gave it an extra star from the 2 I awarded it. The parathi wrappr was sticky under the crispy outer layer, the korma was more like curry than a delicate blend of yogurt & spices and the naan was tough instead of light and flaky. Not at all what I expected from the menu, so disappointed is my main reaction.

I have nothing bad to say about this place. It's exactly what I'd expect for an Indian takeout place, and serves its purpose of satisfying a late evening Indian food craving.

AMAZING FOOD. If you like Indian food you will not be let down by this place. We went after a day at lanikai and have gone back everytime we are in kailua ever since. We love this place and would recommend it to anyone. Had a run in with some crazy drunk one time and 4 cops had to come haul him off but thats beside the point. We love the food. enough said

I LOVE Indian food, I will try it wherever it's offered. I am not an expert in INDIA and it's traditional food but my husband and father in-law were born in Fiji, which is 51+% Indians. So they kinda feel like they are Indians at heart and I am learning from them:) Our family stopped to eat here in passing. We ordered the Papadum, Chicken Curry, Watermelon cooler and mango Lassi and if anything else I can't remember. The papadum was delicious and the chicken curry itself was not bad, I was not wowed. Based on that dish, I don't think I'd drive all the way back to this restaurant for it. The Mango Lassi however was HORRORS! I for one LOVE Lassi's! This was like sucking yogurt threw a straw....who would want to do that. The "mango" taste more like peach and I asked the woman taking my order, if it was fresh mango? She said "NO. It's frozen. Did you like it?" I replied "No, it is not at all what I was hoping for. It tastes like peach to me." She shook her head in agreement and said, " Yeah. It's not that good." I was like....WHAT THE WHAT? Why didn't you share that with me when i was ordering it? The watermelon cooler was the most ingenious rip off ever! You pay for a gigantic watermelon, smash a little into a cup and call it a blended drink. I love watermelon but that drink was straight up LAZY! Why am i paying you $3.50 to put smashed watermelon in a cup? I mean they didn't even try adding some mint or ANYTHING to show they did some type of work! I was seriously put off to ever coming back...

Being a fan of Indian cuisine, I was excited when these folks came to Kailua. I really wanted to like their food, but I just didn't, and I really gave it the ol' college try. After three visits, I finally gave up. The food was mediocre, the service indifferent, and frankly I felt overcharged given the overall experience. Maybe one day....

This is the worst Indian food I have ever had! I do not judge by whether or not it's take out or dine in. It was take out and it was horrible. When you walk in, it looks like one of those hole in the wall restaurants but I gave it a try anyways! I got the Indian curry with the vegetable medley and a side of bread. First of all the curry had chicken in it with the bone still in and I had to pick around it and second of all the curry was very greasy! The vegetables tasted horribly and I couldn't even eat them. The rice was OK as you can't really mess up rice, but it wasn't nearly as good as other fragrant rice I've had. The bread was probably the best thing I had! I will not be coming back here again. I can make my own curry better than that & I am not Indian! Oh and did I mention it took them about twenty minutes to prepare this?? I asked when it would be done she said ten...right! Not a happy customer!

There is generally a lacking of anything exciting food-wise on the Windward side, so India Cafe was a refreshing breath of fresh air. I would like the food though to have more flavor and the seating area to be larger. But for what it is, it does the job.

This is a restaurant i have been to a few times and the food isn't that great but there's no place to really get Indian food without having to travel to town. They don't have Na'an half the time they are opened because they turn their oven off, and that's my favorite thing to eat. Everything is overpriced and there is no trash can in the store. In my opinion this place is a waste of time and money, so don't even bother.

    (2)
  • Lois C.

No matter what dish I order I have been very pleased. The flavors are delicious and authentic, and the servings are ample. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the naan is usually dry and overcooked. The service is friendly and the prices are reasonable.

    (4)
  • James T.

The lamb curry was ok but not spicy enough and I agree with the below poster that the vegetable looked canned. I want flavorful curry and for the money, the flavor and portion was lacking. Expensive lunch option when you're craving Indian that is average.

Sorry people who do NOT like this place. I find them totally FRIENDLY AND COURTEOUS AND HELPFUL--EVERY TIME!!! I only get a pint of SAUCE and I use it on everything for a week. I go after the Farmers Market every Thursday, and use the wunnderful' sauce over my fresh vegis and herbs and rice that they give me. The food is a bit pricey but tasty AND al the staff--they are great. They bring little sample cups of ALL THE SAUCES so you can taste and see--what's hot; what's not. When a place is friendly and kind--the food sits better. Yeah, so itz no atmosphere take-out. So??? I love em! aloha

samosas and breads were very tasty, unfortunately everything else left a lot to be desired. virtually all the other dishes had way overcooked proteins (meat, fish, chicken). Perhaps just caught them on an off night, but very wary about giving them another try

maybe this place has gone downhill but to us it was just god awful. ordered a masala dosa that was like no masala dosa we had ever seen, it was like a giant nasty omelet full of frozen peas and carrots and a bunch of other crap not ordinarily seen in any masala. the chicken tika masala tasted like it was made from canned tomato soup. there was a lot of food, unfortunately it was inedible to anyone used to real Indian food. or food that tastes good, period. the guy at the counter said he would give up back our money for the dosa but did not do so. long story short, worst Indian food, ever.

Although there is a limited menu, this is a cute and convenient spot for Indian food if you don't feel like heading into town. I enjoyed the spicy eggplant and the Chicken Korma. The service is fast and the staff are very helpful. Some of the vegetarian dishes are not amazing, but are satiable. Portion sizes are quite large and you most likely will have leftovers.

  • JS H.

LOVED IT!!! The guy at the counter was incredibly friendly and let us sample the sampal, which was fabulous. I had the spicy eggplant and the cabbage cooked in coconut milk. Both were wonderful. My kids loved the naan. We will definitely go back. The portions were huge and the watermelon juice was a big hit, too. Highly recommend it if you like it hot.

I had a vegetarian combo, and I must say the food was bland and overcooked for the most part and not seasoned right. The portions were also too small and I was hungry again two hours later. It's a fast food joint at restaurant prices, won't go back again.

  • Amanda Z.

Whoaaaa, I can handle spicy, but this place was outta control. It was like someone dumped hot spices, but there was no other flavors/spices at all. I couldn't even bring myself to finish, and I really dislike wasting food. Was a decent amount of food for the price, but just not enough balance/handling of spices/flavors that would make me want to return to spend my money on.

I've had nothing but good experiences at this Indian food restaurant! Usually very fast and friendly. I usually get the lamb or pork vindaloo which is very spicy with Chana masala and a naan bread. I always have to get a watermelon juice as well.

Whoa...NOT GOOD! So, my wife and I tried to give this place a chance on 3 occasions, but definitely 3rd strike! First visit - felt like grabbing a quick snack, so ordered samosas. The filling was pretty decent, typical seasoned peas and potatoes. The flour shell, however, was gummy. It was quite difficult to finish eating. It wasn't at all flaky like a real actual samosa. Also, what Indian place serves "sweet n sour" sauce instead of chutney?!?! Second visit - wanted to try the Coconut Cabbage dish and masala dish. Zero flavor. Seriously, bland. Personally added salt and coconut extract from my own pantry to make it edible. Also ordered naan. You really can't get the traditional Indian bread wrong. This place did. First time I've ever had chewy naan before. Third visit - was craving Indian food and didn't want to drive anywhere far. I ordered the samosas again, to give it a second chance...maybe we just got a bad batch the first time. NOPE! Wrong. Still horrible... From our standpoint, we did try this place multiple times, and were disappointed each time. Too bad there is no other choices for Indian food in Kailua. Also, if you wait for your food inside, you can literally hear the "cook" in the back saying "add more tomato paste" or "needs a little more curry."

    (1)
  • Kaiser M.

Updating my previous review... they're flat out unfriendly. Not planning on coming back. The dudes openly make sarcastic comments and faces about customers and they can be heard talking about people in the back. The food is getting less tasty....its becoming difficult to defend the place and wanting to come back.

  • Megan W.

Wow this place has so many vegetarian and vegan options and everything was delicious! With the veggie plates, you can choose up to three options, which includes seasoned rice, salad and soup! We each had two options and that was plenty. You can also add bread appetizers and chutneys to enhance your meal. There are only two small tables inside and two tables outside so if you have a bigger group, take out is a better choice. They have group meals that would be a good option too. It was delicious and wish I could have tried more dishes. The watermelon juice was also very good. They also have other protein dishes if you are interested in that. The girl taking our order was very friendly and helped us decide what to order.

Got the Raja Kings Dinner Special for 4 for take out, decently priced but the food is just mediocre. The best was probably the samosa, the batter is almost croissant-like and different than I've had. Would recommend the okra, curry chicken, and spicy curry shrimp. Would NOT recommend the pork (we don't remember ordering this, but the container was labeled as such) or the tandoori chicken (super skimpy portion and super dry). Considering this is the only Indian place around this area, would only go back if I'm desperately craving Indian food which is unlikely to be anytime soon.

Being a half Indian from Malaysia, i know what Malaysian food is and i know Indian food as well. When these guys were a mobile vendors their Roti was better and came with a better pricing combo years ago. Their Roti Paratha now was unfortunately worse than frozen pre package ones imported from Malaysia. A good authentic Roti should be hot, buttery, fluffy and soft, served with a good flavorful curry. Their curry was okay, i would still eat it if it was the last curry in this earth. I expected a lot more, with owners being Indian. If you think you'd like something exotic and this is a different fare than your regular meal and wouldn't know any better for comparison then it's not a big deal. The naan was nothing like a real naan, i am sure it never saw the end of the tandoori oven. The cheese topping on top of the naan is a pathetic touch trying to mark up the profit for a non fresh naan is unacceptable. Entire time spent at the shop about 1 hour, service was extremely slow but it was good, server had good manners and did his job well but what was going on in the back, i wouldn't even want to imagine. A lady walked in said she had already phone ordered and still had to wait 45 minutes and the server told her that they had a sudden rush and they were sorry, as long as i've sat there i did not see any "rush" and a few people walked out on them and 1 even said to give his meal to the next person because he couldn't wait any longer. I hope the management would find a way to resolve their execution method to maximize their revenue if they even care. Me and my family for one, will not be coming back which is really sad.

Here's the thing. The food is really good. I'd say definitely 4 stars. But the service is so slow and so lacking that I refuse to come back here. Came in for lunch today and there was one guy in line ahead of me. It took the cashier 10 mins to take his order, ring it up, realise he was out of what the customer wanted, refund him and make idle chit chat. I'd really like to order please. It's ridiculous for it to take ten mins. Finally I get to order. There's a sign behind the register that says fresh naan takes 10 mins to make. I order some and the cashier informs me it will take 30 mins. Are you kidding?? So I say I'll just order my plate without the naan. The cashier spends a longer than necessary amount of time counting change as I pay and he says it will take ten mins. Ugh. When I finally picked up my food I realized the whole ordeal from entering the cafe To picking up my food is 25 minutes. That's just ridiculous for a cafe that doesn't even have customers in it. And I get home with my food to find out that I didn't even get the raita which my plate is supposed to come with. Food may taste good but not great enough for me to waste my time coming back. Also they may want to cut down on their "smoke breaks". Bloodshot eyes give it away every time.

Service is everything, and the white girl in the front was probably the most rude, incompetent server/cashier ever. When she took our order she didn't seem to know what she was doing. We ordered the curry and masala, then she asked which vegetables, then she stammered that "you can't order two, they come with one". I gave her each order separately. Then we order the naan and she said that their tandoori oven broke 20 minutes ago. No politeness whatoever, just snapping at us as if she was trying to defend herself. They don't answer the phone even though they aren't that busy, we tried. I hope the food is that good. The food is great and the other server was exceptional. The constant bickering in the back also was distasteful. When they got our order wrong we could hear the white girl slandering us in the back. She is not meant for people service.

I am very shocked to see some of the reviews on here. I have been here a few times and just went there for dinner tonight. I am always very happy with the food and the service is always good. The Caucasian lady that was working tonight was extremely helpful and took my experience at this restaurant over the top and that is the reason I am taking the time to write this review. I will be back again and again I highly recommend this restaurant if your looking for good Indian food with great service.

Get the eggplant side! It is spicy and delicious! I stumbled upon this eatery while thinking about food while shopping at the grocery market next door, Times. The sign they displayed outside of their restaurant looked enticing. I decided to give them a shot and ordered their lamb masala. The girl taking my order noted to me that the eggplant side was going to be very spicy. Acknowledging the danger that was to come ahead, I took the risk anyway. Later, a bit into the eggplant side, and I need some milk to tame the fire! Anyhow, it was all worth it... The eggplant side was delicious, the lamb masala was incredible and the meal left me dancing! I came back another day and gave their chicken curry a try. In my opinion, the masalas are definitely better than the curries. The Indian rice that comes with each plate is very flavorful! Thumbs up. This is a small eatery with about 3 or 4 tables. But the masalas are yummy!

Meh. Rice was rice. chicken masala is decent. Chana masala had no flavour whatsoever. Raita was watery and bland. Potato/pea was super bland. I don't think they know how what chilis are. The chicken masala was tasty and had creaminess but no spice nor heat whatsoever. Got chilis? Please? Chana masala was bland bland bland. Raita was more water than yogurt and forgettable. Potato/peas were decent consistency wise but lacked a thing called flavour. Bland bland. Pretty sure they're not cooking with ghee, chilis or adequate amounts of spices. It's kinda like making a milk shake with nonfat milk and stevia. Sure it's kinda the same but who wants it? Oh and the roti? Yeah that's not roti, it's some kind of bastardised thin naan. I love naan but it's not roti. Samosa with Thai chili sauce? No thanks. That said I can't give them 1 star because it's not truly terrible. I'd give them 2.5 stars if I could because it's definitely edible, it's just not any good. It's like airplane food - nourishment divorced from joy, elevated only by the thrill of travel to an exotic destination. Except your flight got diverted to O'Hare.

Coconut Curry, that is where it's at my fellow food lovers. This is no ordinary curry...spices blended so perfectly you'll never want to try anything else. There's no overuse of one spice or under usage of another, it is just right and more than you'll expect. The chicken was so tender it fell off of the bone, does it get any better than that? No. The zitti, which was my veggie of choice, was soft and delectable but not mushy. They even had an awesome homemade vegan salad dressing that was light and refreshing for these hot Hawaii days. I have been back time and time again and it's always as amazing as the time before! Not to mention I'd love to run my fingers through (who I assume is) the managers blonde curly hair...mmhmmmmmm ;)

Prices ranged from $2.95 for the naan to $13.95 for an entree. This place was for carry out only, not for eating in. There is just one table and chairs which seemed to be for the people waiting for their orders. Wanted to love this place because I love Indian food. I'll start with the good: The woman taking my order on the phone and handing me the food at the counter when I picked it up was very pleasant. The naan was really good, perfectly cooked. Chana Masala had the right flavor and texture. The rice had the right texture and flavor. Not so good: The samosas were not cooked all the way through (raw dough just under the crusty outside). They were served with Thai sweet chili sauce (?) instead of chutney. Chicken Tikka sauce was too sweet (like cheap spaghetti sauce) and the chicken had a "I've been frozen more than once" texture. The Saag Tofu was so salty we couldn't' eat it. The Coconut Fish Curry (the specialty of the House) was just basic and not great. I was disappointed and I don't think I'll be going back. :(

I first ate at this restaurant during my trip to Hawaii back in 2006. 7 years later I revisited and it was just as good as I remembered!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE their food. The flavor is amazing! I don't think I can decide on a favorite dish (I tried about 4 different entrees). The service was also wonderful, very friendly. Also, very very clean! I was a little nervous the food was not going to be as good as I remembered, but IT WAS BETTE

Good food..we had spicy tofu sambal, coconut fish curry and chicken tikka..loved all of them..specially the coconut fish curry. Fresh asian catfish. They serve good portion of yellow rice and curry with side of lettuce with indian chutney. And the staff was super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place to grab some good indian curries.

We purchased four different vegetarian dishes, and naan. First I have to preface that I am always looking for the best naan, their tasted like they sprinkled sugar on top, so I was not a fan. The main dishes were alright. Its a very small place, two/three tables inside, two small tables outside. But for take- out. I'm glad my husband and I tried it, but most likely not going back.

  • Andrew T.

Plus: I enjoyed the food and the vegetarian options, pretty good value and flavor. Minus: just felt like the owner is not present enough. The cashier was pleasant but wearing an old grimy baseball cap that just didn't help their brand. Our order was wrong but corrected quickly with no argument. Summary: I would go back, but haven't rushed back.

I have to start off by saying I have no idea why people have given less than 5 stars. The Samosas are so tasty. The chili sauce, although it may not be what is typically served with a samosa, is mind blowingly good. Im drooling all over my keyboard... Chicken Tikka Masala was mmm mmm mmmmmmm. I am going to beg the owner for the recipe. I love that he asks you to contact him personally if there are any issues. I love that he is so connected to the customer and wants to satisfy them. The last time I went the man behind the counter was so upbeat. He was extremely busy and I sympathized with the chef. Around twenty-thirty people came in and out as I was waiting for my food and they were helped very quickly. I talked to the man behind the counter and he had been there all day and had lost his keys and he was really hungry but he was soooo nice regardless of his situation. My boyfriend and I wish we lived in Kailua so we could eat here more often. We do ride the bus from Waiahole just to eat there. By the way people, small restaurants and holes in the wall are the best places to eat. Its like eating in moms kitchen. Its like you are enjoying your meal with family. I love India Cafe.

I've eaten here twice and both times were very disappointing. The food was bland and just didn't taste good. The pre-made bags at the grocery store taste way better than their food.

So the food here is always good! But the service has always been atrocious. I've been ignored and pushed away every time I come in here. It always takes way longer than the "10 minutes" they predict too. It was dead slow and it still took them 30 minutes today! But the food is always tasty!
