Love Thai food and eat it all over the world. This is not good. Had lunch special Red Curry w/ chicken. It was not good. Can tell from presentation of other customers food that there's wasn't good either. Bottom line - Don't waste your time or money here.

Disgusting food!!! Pad Thai made with bacon grease. ???? Bacon grease! Save yourself some time and stomach pain. Go elsewhere!!

Do not waste your time or money! I actually read some of the reviews before arriving at the restaurant...my gut feeling was run, but thought i would give it a chance...i should have listened to my gut feeling. The food was served cold, bland and really not like Thai food. I ordered the Penang curry, spicy and received a vegetable, coconut-like thin broth like dish...the veggies were fresh and crispy, but i wanted curry, not a veggie dish of some sort....to top it off, I saw several chicken hairs on my chicken pieces, and I stopped eating when I saw a random hair in my food... My friend ordered the spicy fried rice...bland...he then ordered the Pad Thai...it was terrible. We were betting to see who would actually get sick first. We had to fly out that night and wondered if we would both make our flights. Don't go, don't even think about it... Service was good at first, but we were the only ones there, we had to wait a bit for the bill, our waitress was watching tv and eating her own dinner... sad place!

The place was empty, so I was worried, but the food was OK, and the service was very good. Prices were very reasonable.

We got stuck here when the actual place we wanted to eat at closed early. We had the appetizer which had a little bit of everything, which wasn't too bad, and we also ordered a Pad Thai to keep it safe as well as the surf and turf stir fry. The stir fry was nothing special, the shrimp and chicken in it weren't cooked particularly well, so i tried to stay positive by saying to myself i'm only eating it for the veggies. The Pad Thai had a very strong tamarind or fish oil taste as well. Service was decent, they came by all the tables several times filling up the glasses of water. I don't know what to say about cleanliness... its an open air restaurant and so bugs can fly in freely, but then again, this is true for most Kona restaurants.

This is NOT a good place to dine. Ate here one time about 7 years ago with poor results. A friend and I saw the waitress pour water into drinking glasses and stirred it with her finger. The pictures of their cuisine on the outside wall should give you an idea of their crap food. American thai restaurants seem to have shares in sugar and high fructose corn syrup companies. Also, drowning dishes in coconut milk---yuck!! Just a tip; If there is a smell of old frying oil emanating from any thai kitchen, turn and go elsewhere. Clean restaurants are hard to find. All thai restaurants on the big island suck except the following: Try Orchid Thai, Original Thai or Bangkok House. For friendliness and beef salad it's Bangkok House, for cleanliness, beef salad and flirtatious waitress it's Original Thai and for great papaya salad and curries it's Orchid Thai. Sorry i don't do pad thai or any of that sizzling volcano crap dishes.

This place was not very good. The Duck Curry (Chef's Specialty) was very tough and gristly. The curry sauce was pretty tasty but it had *canned* pineapple in it. So tragic, since this is probably the easiest place in the world to get fresh pineapple. The Chicken Phad Kee Mao was ok. The chicken was very dry, the noodles were sort of tough, and the sauce was, hmmm, boring. Perhaps it's ok if you stick to the more popular items, like Phad Thai, as Glenn S. suggests.

Had a wonderful dinner here. When you walk in the always open door, you're greeted with a large statue of the Buddha sitting on a table. The walls hold more Buddhist decor. The service, as opposed to other places in Kona, was excellent. Very attentive wait staff, orders were taken in just the right amount of time (just after we had made our minds up, and laid the menus down.) Throughout the meal our waiter made sure we had everything we needed. There were four of us, and for the most part, we ordered different meals. Two of us had pad thai, one had a rice dish with pork, and I had the red curry with chicken. The food came shortly after we placed our order, and even though we each ordered seperate dishes, we all shared, family style. The pad thai was just a little spicy. Just enough for you to feel it. The noodles were soft, and the sauce and other flavors were able to soak into them. Some like it that way, others don't. I had never had it like that before, but thoroughly enjoyed it. The curry was outstanding. Spicy, the chicken moist and tender (not like mine when I make curry) and you could taste the coconut milk in the very flavorful sauce. A very good, filling meal, and about $65 for all four of us.

Perfectly fine strip mall Thai food. If you want more complex dishes and pay accordingly the best choice is Orchid Thai nearby. This place was an affordable break from the fancy stuff. No AC but nice fans. Good service; we'd just been diving and were thirsty, and they nicely refilled our water 5 times.

First some perspective: we Kona-ites know our restaurants don't measure up to the best of the mainland. For instance, we have mediocre Mexican and Italian restaurants, good bistros are in very short supply (Jackie Rey's is pretty good, but Cafe Pesto in Hilo and Kawaihae are better). A good pizza house will cause crowds to form. We do have a large Asian community, so Chinese and Thai restaurants are better, with oddly few Japanese offerings. I've lived in Kona for 11 years, and this is my favorite Thai restaurant. Friends champion Orchid or Original Thai or even Krua, but if you know what to order, Taeng On Thai equals or beats them, in my opinion. When my buddies and I go there on a weekday evening, we usually order Pad Thai, Sweet and Sour (fried) fish, Crispy Duck and Volcano Chicken. All are always excellent. Family owned and friendly. Not sure what the reviewer means when he says "nice tables out to the side of the restaurant", I think he may be talking about Thai Rin restaurant a couple of blocks from here.. Taeng On Thai is upstairs, above the Kona Inn-area shops - no outdoor dining. I also don't think you should withhold stars based on how crowded the restaurant is. Parking is not handy to this restaurant, so locals often drive elsewhere. Counting on mostly walk-by tourist trade means you will sometimes be empty. I think you should try Taeng On Thai!

I'm pretty sure I walked out of the place with diabetes. Every dish except for the fried rice was saturated to such a ridiculous level of sugar. Aaron M. described it perfectly "This is some sugar mixed in with some chicken or noodles, depending on what you order." They didn't even have sticky rice! What kind of thai place doesn't have sticky rice?? The papaya salad was soaked in sugar and the papaya was orange instead of green. I'm guessing the green papayas they bought turned orange while waiting for customers to walk through the door. It was empty when we went there. The pad thai was disgustingly sweet and the red curry with chicken was also very sweet and not really worthy of the curry name. This was a sad place. But it is cheap so if you like sweet food and cheap and having the restaurant all to yourself so that the server can hover over your shoulder the whole time, then this may be the place for you.

I don't know how this compares with other Thai restaurants in the area, so please keep that in mind. I can tell you that the Tom Yum Kai soup was slightly different than I'd had before, and very tasty, and the Chicken Pad Thai was good. The lady that helped us was very friendly. I'm betting you'll find something you like here. One of the things I always look for, especially in Hawaii, is outdoor dining, and they've got nice tables out to the side of the restaurant for this very reason.

The bad reviews are probably for the other restaurant close by, this restaurant is on the second floor. But I think this is the best Thai Restaurant in kona. But i like the bad reviews it keeps the restaurant not busy so we can get a table.

2/18/2010 Stopped by for a quick lunch. Not bad. Ambiance was a bit lacking. Overhead fans kept the place cool. There wasn't anyone there when I arrived. It was close to one o'clock in the afternoon. A few people drifted in while I ate. The server saw me and came right away. I ordered spicy garlic chicken and got that in less than 10 minutes. It was spicy as ordered and very flavorful. The price for the food was fair for Kona. The portion was perfect for me but may be considered small by most people but it is lunch time. I would give the food four stars because it tasted fresh and flavorful. I'd come back to try other dishes, but I'm not yet sure if I'm necessarily a fan of the place.

I go here with my Partner at least once a month for lunch or dinner. Taeng On Thai is definitely one of those restaurants that you've never heard of but need to try if you are in Kailua-Kona, HI. There are two Taeng On Thai restaurants in Kailua-Kona offering the same recipes: which of only One Location I have tried that is the Taeng On Thai 2 restaurant on Palani Rd in the Kona Coast Shopping Center where wendys and startbucks are located.. Taeng On Thai dishes are all bursting with flavor. They also offer PHO Soup, and can customize dishes to your liking. The service staff is friendly. My partner and I usually order the Papaya Salad. Its probably the best Salad offered in Kailua-Kona HANDS DOWN. The Curry dishes, Pad Thai, and Tom Kha are also excellent choices. I urge anyone looking for something different and exciting to try Taeng On Thai 2. The prices just right too. Aloha

The helpings of the three items we tried were large. But they were very medicre in flavor, and a far far cry from how they would taste in Thailand, or how they would taste from a high quality That restaurant.

I LOVE Thai food. I came in here with a friend for the first time the other day and was verry disappointed. The place was dead when we got there, so the server was fast to bring water and such but wasn't really friendly. The place could really use a face lift. With such a good location it could easily be a hot spot. The lunch special was about 7 bucks, a good price for Kona. I ordered the vegetable curry(its a red curry) and it wasn't great. It was an good sized portion for me but probably not enough for some. There are much better Thai places on the island, don't waste your time.

On a recent visit to Hawaii we made two visits to the Kona Taeng-On Thai Food restaurant. Our first visit was rather uneventful but pleasant. We received our orders promptly, had timely service, and the food was better than expected. Even though we dined at 6PM sharp on a Sunday, there was only one other couple in this large restaurant. I had the spicy beef with basil, which lived up to its name and really pleased the palette. This prompted a second visit a few days later when we returned to the area. On our second visit, the restaurant was empty for a Wednesday night. Knowing that we were the only customers interested in Kona Taeng-On Thai at the prime time dinner hour raised suspicion. Our server was a bit dismissive when my wife asked for 'no onions' with her order, and when I requested a special pineapple chicken dish I twice instructed 'no onions'. In fact, as the server was stepping away I again reminded 'no onions'. To nobodies surprise, my plate came out with onions although my wife's plate did not. While the wait for our food wasn't too terribly long, they wanted to take back my plate and make the meal again without onion. When I attempted to explain that this would cause me to eat my dinner after my wife had already finished, I resigned myself to picking out rather large bands of onion from the otherwise dull and lacking hollow pineapple special. In retrospect, I should have just kept it simple with a basic (fail-proof) dish. Another issue was Thai tea. We love our Thai tea, but we don't care for restaurants that skimp by topping the glass with ice and pouring in two ounces of tea. This is one of those places. Not only did the ice measure level with the rim, but four or five sips later the entire drink was gone. I asked if there were refills, which there were not, so I requested another Thai tea with no ice. What I got instead was a bigger glass, but in addition to more tea there was also more ice. In summary, our first visit seemed to go smoothly due largely in part because we received service from the owner. Our second visit had several problems: poor service, incorrect order, ignored requests, etc. If I were staying in Hawaii again, Kona Taeng-On Thai Food would not get a third chance for my business - especially with two other Thai food restaurants within walking distance.

This is the best Thai in Hi. Waist your money at the rest of the places and try this one when you are downtown. A lot of locals here, not tourist who rate 3 stars. Should say something, coming from a tourist like me.

Grumbly service like they are doing you a favor. Essentially raw food just heated enough to be warm all the way through. I guess if you want raw food this would be the place for you. It is edible but I have had way better thai 3 doors down...literally! The entire time we were in Kailua Kona we never saw another person sitting in there as we passed by...hmmm...nuff said.

This is the best Thai restaurant on the island that I've had so far! I am not sure why so many people are rating this restaurant so badly, I am really surprised! I lived in the Bay area for 8 years, so I was frustrated when I moved back to the island and couldn't find a good thai place, until I ate at Kona Taeng on Thai, their food is delicious! and consistent. Consistency is important. I have the yellow chicken curry, and it is always perfect! Comes with potatoes and carrots and chicken of course, and always cooked to perfection. The green papaya is delicious, much much better than any other thai restaurant that I've eaten at on the island. If you like Charley's (I think it's just ok...), this place is way, way better! also the Thai iced tea is always perfect too, they know how to make it right (unlike Charley's). Their mango with sticky rice is perfect too. I've had some not so good mango with sticky rice at another thai place in Kona, this place makes it right! and, the price is very fair, less pricey than other places that they don't make it as good even. This place has really good food, for really fair prices. not a bad wine selection either, you can get a decent bottle of wine for $20. Service is always good (not poshy by any means though - this place is for people who appreciate good food for a good price, not for those who are looking for a posh place to dine). casual and nice atmosphere though. i like how the side of the building is open, and you can look at onto alii drive. kinda noisy sometimes from the alii drive traffic, but still appreciate having fresh air. Love this place, and was so glad to find a thai place that is actually worth my money and time on this island! :)

Very very average. My hubby and I couldn't go to the raipailus Indonesian restaurant because it was closed. The Tom yum soup was good. I had pad see ew which was basic and the shrimp were smelly. The hubby had number 45 - some chicken and shrimp sizzler: again smelly shrimp and very bland and tasteless. Coke was flat and the staff were lame - go to McDonalds instead.

  • Bala T.

The menu was decent. We went for lunch and it was cheap. But the server forgot to ask us about spice level and my fried rice was very bland. The papaya salad was wonderful. My friend also recommended the mint noodles! Not the best, but an ok place to stop for lunch.

I ate here twice during a recent trip to Kona. I didn't check Yelp before hand and am glad I didn't. I'm not sure whether something has recently changed, but everyone in our 4 person party was very happy with their meals. We ordered everything from soup to appetizers to noodle dishes and curries between the two trips. I wasn't enamored with the Pad Thai but other than that, we really enjoyed the flavor of the food. The owners were friendly and the place was clean. With a lot of Thai alternatives in the area we still ended up there twice. And I plan to eat here again when I'm in Kona next time.

I love Thai food, but this is not the place to go for it. The staff was friendly and accommodating, but beyond that there isn't much to compliment. One of my favorite flavors is Thai Basil and I definitely saw the leaves in my food, but they were old or something because they had absolutely no flavor. Also, there was no heat in my food at all. I realize they generally cook for the geriatric crowd, but 4 stars means give me some heat! Overall I'd avoid this place if you've ever had Thai food before.

  • Henry R.

Didnt like it. Didn't like it. Didn't like it. I love Thai food. This was a westernized version of what I'm used to eating. Everything had a sweet taste, that didn't appeal to me. No heat to the dishes. All were not spicy at all. probably cause they cater to tourist. There special roll with avocado was good and there Thai tea was excellent not too sweet. Besides that everything else was ehhhh. My dish was the deep fried duck which was one of there specials. Let me repeat myself when I say ehhhhhhh.

This place was not as terrible as the scathing reviews made it seem. The service was friendly and accommodating, and our food came out really quickly. We ordered from the $7.95 lunch menu. I ordered the chicken pad Thai and Thai iced tea, both of which were pretty good. The pad Thai was a bit oily, and the noodles were thinner than I'm used to, but it still tasted pretty good. My mom had the yellow curry which had potatoes and a hint of coconut. Overall, it was kind of sweet and not at all spicy. Would be a good choice for kids. Comes with either brown rice or some coconut rice, both of which are pretty good. The red curry was decent as well, but also not very spicy. Most of the food was sweet rather than spicy, and definitely not the best Thai food I've had. However, it was a decent meal and I'd eat here again if I was in a rush to catch some waves!

  • Jonathon A.

I enjoyed my dinner at this place, good service and quality food. However we were the only diners!! I might attribute that to the atmosphere. It is upstairs and is rather cheesy and outdated. they might want to invest some professional decorator advice to give the place more credibilty. People working in the restaurant were out in the dining area watching a basketball game. I hope they know this does not look appropriate...

    (3)
  • Lorin L.

Red curry was good but I didn't like their Pad Thai at all. Friendly staff was good with kids. Inexpensive. Weird crowd.

  • Jane H.

Don't know why the reviews are so bad. It is an OK place with OK prices. Got the fish with ginger sauce and a plate of veggies with peanut sauce. The sauces have solid flavor, the only problem is how watery the sauces are. Maybe they need to know how to thicken it. There are lots of veggies that come with every dish, so no need to get a specific veggie dish. Also the fish tasted pretty fresh. Come again, probably not, but if you feel lost as for what to eat, it's not a bad choice, and service is quick and friendly.

I grew up on Thai food and know what good Thai food is. This, unfortunately, is not! You'd think since it's located in such a nice spot, it would be busy. The place was empty (not a good sign). But as my husband and father in law wanted Thai or Indian, we stayed and ordered. I tried to order a bottle of wine. They were out of the first I asked for. Then they were out of the second. So, the only thing we could order was beer. We ended up ordering Steinlager (New Zealand) which was pretty good. We ordered... Red Curry (Vegetarian) - The worst ever! Spring Rolls - good Talapia Black bean garlic - too salty to enjoy anything I asked for extra garlic and some lemon for my talapia and I couldn't taste any garlic and there was no lemon. It was so salty that I couldn't enjoy even quarter of my plate. My plate looked untouched when I left since there was no way I could finish it. One would think that they waiter would ask if everything was ok. Not one word. He was more interested in collecting his money and tip than having a happy customer. This was a waste of money. Will not be coming here again.

THIS PLACE IS A WASTE OF TIME! Close your doors, already! Great Location & a great dining room. I think that is their lure to get you in the restaurant. After that, it's all down-hill from there. We sat down next to the ledge which over-looked Ali'i Drive. We Ordered Fresh Spring Rolls, Som Tom (papaya salad), Fried Egg Rolls, Yellow Curry, Green Curry, Crispy Duck, Pad Cee Yew & Pad Thai... Each dish was a dissappointment... No Flavors! It tasted like they substituted flavor with sugar or had a dipping sauce to mask the blandness of the food. The spring rolls came out with a beautiful plating. Beautiful is all it was. A honey dipping sauce with peanut sprinkles?! Not Good. The Som Tom tasted like papaya in that same dipping sauce they used for the spring rolls This place is cheap on the Nam Pla (fish sauce). The skin on the wedgee of lime was a yellow color almost liking like a lemon. That means your limes are old. The dish was not salty-limey like it should be... Fried Egg Roll... that's that.. The Yellow Curry had Potatoes that were overly cooked and carrots that needed a little help... Seriously, though, this was the best dish of the bunch. I give this dish 1 star. And that's being generous... The Green Curry was white. I'm confused. I thought green was green. Agagin, i gotta stress the fact that the flavors are absent. The Crispy Duck, Pad Cee Yew AND the Pad Thai all tasted Bland and seemed like more of a chinese restaurant than a Thai Restaurant. SAD!

  • Benjamin R.

If you like sweet food, this is ok. However, if you Thai food, go elsewhere. The pad Thai was bland and sweet (with few eggs and thin noodles), the papaya salad was flavorless except the added sugar and romaine lettuce. The basil rolls were tolerable but even the peanut sauce wasn't very good and the sweet and sour sauce was too sweet. Go elsewhere...

I went even though I saw the overall 21/2 star rating figuring the owner would try harder to improve. I guess the owner must not be on Yelp. Awful describe it all. I'll spare you the greasy details.

This is not Thai food. This is some sugar mixed in with some chicken or noodles, depending on what you order. I rate this only above Krua. It is just as bad as Krua, but at least it is cheap. Also, the employees were very friendly. 1* is solely based on not very good food.

  • Nathan C.

This is kind of an odd place. The table arrangement is really bizarre; individual 4-tops scattered about the periphery and cafeteria-style long tables filling the center. The food is good, although most dishes we had were just a tad sweeter than you'd expect (as some other reviewers have noted). We had pad Thai (decent, we got it mild for the kids but it would have been better medium) and pad na (excellent). We also had a third dish that was served on a sizzling plate that was just OK. They also serve a mussels appetizer that is really tasty; the mussels are covered in a garlic-sweet mixture that is delicious. Service is super fast - like, startlingly fast.

I am shocked that this is even a Thai restaurant. I literally thought I was eating a salad with egg noodles with little to no flavoring. The chicken also tasted boiled with no seasoning. Would not record...you would be better off not eating. Sorry but not sorry

I could not find this place on yelp when searching for a place to eat. So we decided to give it a try. Bad choice. There was only two couples including us. The food is mediocre. Service was not so friendly. The entrees do not come with rice. Each of us had to order rice. I would not recommend.

Not sure of the low ratings, as if non-Thai people are experts on Thai cuisine...anyway, the food was great, a little different than on the mainland. Could have been from a different region of Thailand. Water glasses were always full, and the waitress really worked hard to keep on top of all her tables (there were five others). Always my mantra when I travel to support local businesses, especially smaller restaurants....this was worth the stop. Nonetheless, waitress got a better tip...

I should have relied on Yelp on this one. Decided to come here because it was close to my mom's workplace. The food is all strangely sweet. The curry should have some sweetness, but this was a bit off putting. There were actually a few people here for the late lunch hour, but I can't get passed the sweet curry.

Other reviews seem way too harsh on this place. We went for lunch and were the only people in there which we thought was odd but did mean that our food was out to us within a matter of minutes after ordering. We had a glass noodle salad with chicken and shrimp, pad Thai and yellow curry. All tasted good and if we had the time would have definitely gone back for more.

Four stars for price! Where else can u get lunch for $7? Here! Pahd Thai was a little greasy but flavorful. Three stars for overall quality and experience. Its really outdated and needs a deep clean...but every other place is like this on alii drive, so its expected.
