I don't even know where to begin. So, so disappointed with this place. I don't generally write bad reviews but this needs to be said. I can honestly say this is the worst restaurant experience I have ever encountered in my life. Grab the popcorn guys, this is gonna be a long one. I was on my way out to Hilo one morning when I stopped in. It was around 8 am and the place was dead...now I know why. However, I didn't think too much of it so I decided to swing by with some friends thinking it would be a quickie breakfast. Boy, was I wrong. There was 1 party of 2 women ahead of us and we heard their order. 2 iced coffees and 2 breakfast sandwiches. Doesn't seem that complicated, right? Then we ordered. 2 coffees and 3 breakfast sandwiches. We didn't realize all their food was microwaved until after we had paid. Oh well. There was one guy and one woman working at the time. The man had taken our order and I believe the woman was the owner. We went to our table to check out the view and wait for our food. After about 20 minutes we started wondering what was taking so long so we went inside. The 2 girls ahead of us were still standing there waiting for their food too. We looked behind the counter and they were opening frozen packages and there was something in the microwave. Weird that not one sandwich had come out yet. I mean what does it take, 3 minutes or so? We went to sit back down. Not kidding, another 10 minutes passed and we went back in. Not surprising, the 2 girls were still there. The man was setting 2 sandwiches down on the counter. He pointed to us so we went up and looked at the sandwiches. We told him we had ordered 3 sandwiches but he didn't believe us so we showed him the receipt. He actually had trouble reading it! Still couldn't understand so we pointed them out and he said he would start on the other one. We grabbed the 2 that were ready and went outside. The bacon looked totally raw...and when I touched my sandwich it was barely luke warm. No way I was going to eat that. My friend was equally grossed out. She grabbed our sandwiches and took them inside. Mind you, we were quite agitated at this point so our demeanor may have changed a little. But we were still very polite to the end. She returned the sandwiches and explained that we weren't going to eat them and that we would just like our money back. She was told that they couldn't refund us because we paid with a card. When my friend came back she was actually in tears. I know it sounds dramatic but we were so hungry and had been there for almost an hour at this point. So I went in and asked for a refund. The women that had ordered before us had finally gotten their food and were leaving. There was a third person working at this point. It took the 3 of them to figure out how to issue me a refund and I ended up just getting the cash back after standing there awkwardly for a few minutes. I ended up going to Burger King and getting the exact same thing I had ordered from them in about 2 minutes and for cheaper. It actually pained me to write this review because I am in the restaurant business and I hate to leave bad reviews. But I hope this was just a bad day for these guys and that they step it up.

Enjoyed the atmosphere and the view! Barista was very friendly too. However, I paid about $6 for a small caramel macchiato which seemed a bit crazy.

During my visit to Kona I made a few stops here because it's a quiet little place with a friendly atmosphere and fast WiFi. I'm not much of a coffee fan in general, so the four-star rating is based on its service, location and delicious ice cream. I tried both the coconut cream and macadamia nut ice cream. I only regret that I don't have time to sample every flavor. The ice cream is great! I'll try to stop here one more time before I leave.

Attention hipsters--this is the place! Quite possibly the best coffee spot on the island--or maybe all of Hawaii? Super-smooth brew and highly skilled barista deliver an awesome cup o' joe. Then, there's the spacious patio deck with ocean view. Finally, the piped-in jazz classics completes the perfect experience. The review by Tiana N from Orange, CA is correct. The Kona Haven is not set up for food. It's a place to hang and work on your laptop, or just enjoy the scene. If you're hungry for breakfast, then head on over to Lava Java which is just footsteps away. But, if you want to sip on a coffee and enjoy the view, then Kona Haven is the better choice. While you will pay a little more than Starbucks, the quality and flavor of the coffee will more than justify the uplift.

I stopped by here today with my wife and her parents for an afternoon coffee. We arrived just before 5 pm to find the place pretty empty. As such we walked right up to the counter and ordered. I decided to go with a 16 oz. 100% Kona coffee while my wife went with an iced Americano and my father in law unsuccessfully tried order any decaf coffee. Within a few minutes our coffee was up and we headed out onto their linai in order to enjoy the view. Other than their linai, there are a number of other seats inside on the inside as well as the coffee bar and a refrigerated display case. My coffee here was just ok. It didn't taste very strong and may have been a bit watered down but at least it tasted like it was fairly fresh. The bottom line for me is that I might stop back here again in the future. Their linai was simply awesome but I think that the coffee a couple of doors down was significantly better.

I know that Kona Coffee is a special thing. Something we should all be proud of here in Kona. I get it. You can blame it on the beetle that every one pins Kona Coffee's radical decline on, but the coffee in this establishment is bitter. It's as bitter as a kid on Christmas morning under an empty tree, Christmas wish list in hand, reading it aloud to a mother who could have afforded each item financially, but decided she didn't have the time to shop for her child in December. Do I sound mad? I am. I went to this place almost every day for a week, because I loved their redesign. On the seventh day, when god rested, the stoned barista still asked me if I was Kama'aina. Get staff members that care. Sacrilegiously blend your coffee with a non-Kona bean. The bitterness of each cup, combined with the uncongeniality of each staff member, congealed in my soul and re-emerged in the form of this review.

Great little place to relax and enjoy a good cup of coffee. The staff are friendly, the prices reasonable and the Dutch cold-brewed coffee is delicious. We will be back on our next trip to Kona.

This is the perfect little spot to stop and grab coffee. They have a large, very nice lanai, right across the street from the ocean. Very good coffee, very nice staff.

Out of all the cups of "kona coffee" I've had so far (and yes there have been many..) This was the best and most robust of all! I ordered an extra fancy medium roast from their hand drip menu and it was just. right. No acidity or bitterness, but still robust in flavor and smooth to sip. I also appreciated how a breakfast for four didn't cost an arm and a leg here! We got a latte, breakfast sandwich specials + kona house brew, and a blueberry muffin for a total of $30. Typically the total + tax for breakfast buffets in the area for ONE (yikes) The seaside view and free wifi doesn't hurt either! Thanks Kona Haven!

Great taste, wonderful location. Come and feel how different Hawaiian Kona coffee would be. Especially I am a fan of "extra fancy" though "peaberry" is good as well.

Maybe it's just cause it's Monday but wow if I knew it would take 25 minutes to get a microwaved croissant I would have just went to Burger King..... Won't be back here again

Great coffee and great view! Nice service! The coffee they sell is a bit on the high side. They had religious music in the back ground which I like becoming new catholic. We sat on the patio with our iced coffee and enjoyed view! I highly recommend this place if your ever on the island!

I have spent nearly 9 days here now and each day I spend some time here. We all know my focus on coffee, it can ruin a nice cafe, but this place not only has awesome coffee...especially espresso and lattes...but they have the nicest staff. I seriously think they have some of the best coffee on the island. It is not over roasted like others I tried so it doesn't have a burning taste (peets). And it isn't sour. Which I dont care what these third wave roasters like four barrel say, it is sour and gross. This is a nice smooth tasting coffee. Balanced, clean and delicious. From the relaxing view, to the wonderful staff, and delicious coffee, if you're in Kona and you need a quick coffee or want a relaxing amd fun cafe with a spectacular view, come here.

Thanks to yelp for helping us locate this gem! We were craving a delicious coffee for an afternoon kick as a result of an early morning excursion. There are a number of highly rated shops in the area but we wanted to try and avoid a chain. I went over all of the coffee selections with the owner and Kristi and I both selected the highest price Peaberry individual drip with steamed milk. The coffee was perfection buttery, silky, and delicious! You also can't beat the view and people watching from the lanai

If you're looking for a really good cup of bean juice, come try the Drip coffee @ Kona Haven. Their coffee comes direct from their plantation in nearby Captain Cook, and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming. The ocean is right there, you can enjoy some coffee with the shore break 30 meters away. They also have some nice Macademia nut pie, ice creams, sandwiches and smoothies. Mahalo!

I judge whether a coffee shop is an authentic specialty shop based on whether they have a quality pour over rather than their espresso as fewer people know or care to take the time to use this method. This was the only establishment that I found in all of Kona to offer a pourover in over a week's stay in the area and it far exceeded my expectations! The shop is locally owned and operated and sources all its product from the family farm on the island. Their peaberry was the most delicious of any that I tried during my stay. The views from their spacious patio were delightful (including the people watching). Can't say enough good things about this one.

Great coffee shop in the middle of downtown Kona. A handful of roasts are available via pour over and they have a variety of Kona roasts.

It's close to the Royal Kona Resort where I live. Good coffee, hit the spot. And the blueberry muffin is delicious. Feeling great about sitting here to see the sea. The last day I visit Kona, love this place.

Coffee is good. I thought it was pricey; $8 for two black coffees. I also thought the staff was somewhat pretentious I ordered two small coffees, one iced and the counter guy acted like he didn't understand and had to ask several questions to get my order. He said he would bring my coffee out when out was ready. He didn't. The other counter person called got me when it was ready. We had our coffee on the deck. It is a beautiful view.

Try the affogato with tahitian vanilla ice cream. You can thank me later. Also on a different day I tried the mocha with coconut milk. Incredible. High quality coffee shop with a great view.

$7 is what you pay for an egg cheese and bacon which was nuked in the microwave..expected a lot more for that price..not going back here

We've been here twice in the last two days. Love the medium roast iced coffee. Great acidity, a little fruit, and perfectly caffeinated. My favorite, though is the affagato. Vanilla ice cream with a a shot if espresso. Perfect blend of bitter and sweet. Can't wait to try the coffee at home. Brought back a bag...aloha!

Best quality coffee in Kona, plus a relaxing ocean terrace = 5 stars. All of their coffee is grown, processed, and roasted on the owners' farm. Once you are spoiled by the hand drip brews you'll never be able to go back to Starbucks again. And incredibly good local ice cream in tropical flavors made with milk from happy Big Island cows! Just please don't disgrace this artisanal coffee with sugar and creamer - try it black, Kona coffee is naturally less bitter and lower in caffeine than other coffee varieties.

I love their coffee! Iced mocha with caramel added! Also, the turkey sandwich but substitute chicken because they were out of turkey :) if I lived here I would go there all the time for my coffee and sandwiches. Yum yum! Super nice, cute guy working there too ;)

I had my first iced latte here last year and still then, I like iced coffees. Today I like iced coffee better than latte but both taste great here. The staff was always friendly any the view from their deck is unbeatable. Will come back again.

Best lanai to have a coffee in the morning, enjoying the breeze and my Kona coffee. It is one of my favorite places to have coffee and watch the tourists walk by!!!

Great coffee.!! Best I had in Kona! We ordered peaberry coffee, WoW the flavor was amazing and bold. Did not use any creamer because the taste was good! Bold and strong, the way I like my coffee.

Delicious 100% Kona coffee grown at the owner's local farm. My husband insisted on having a cup every day during our week stay in Kona. Expect friendly service & a fabulous location for watching the sunset or people passing by.

The most expensive coffee I have ever purchased and terrible service. We paid $18 for 2 lattes and a bagel, then made the mistake of tipping them, only to have them completely forget to make our order. I can't say anything good about this place, stay away!

  • Lisa F.

The barista was rude, arrogant and pretentious to my mother and I. This was a very disappointing experience. The best coffee in the world is only as good as it's service. This is Hawaii, not Brooklyn.

This place is great! All of their coffee is from their local Kona coffee farm (not true for other coffee shops). A cool breeze and large lanai overlooking the ocean is perfect for any time of day. My barista even made my cappuccino that mimicked a horse constellation (so creative). Check it out for a real Kona cup of joe, ice cream or pastry.

Ordered 2 pour overs: 1 peaberry and 1 fancy. Both extremely smooth with no or very little acidity to the pallette. Our local pallete includes Greenwell, Kona Mountain, and Mountain Thunder. Nice location in front of the water too.

Post card caliber view as I enjoyed one of the best cups of coffee ever. Friendly staff and plenty of options for coffee enthusiasts. My only regret was that I felt it was too early to sample some of the locally made ice cream. Is it ever too early for ice cream?

Welcome to my happy place. Such a great coffee bar, I love to hang out on the terrace with an iced coffee gazing at the ocean. And the affogado is an *obsession*, so good!

I spent 10 days at Kailua Kona. Most coffee shops along the strip are overpriced including Kona Haven. It was $4.75 for a 12 oz cup of brewed Kona Coffee. You can get a better tasting and cheaper brew of 100% Kona coffee from the Starbucks up the street, only $2.40 for a tall. In addition, the bagel sandwich was also overpriced, lacking any quality or innovation. I only long for my homemade sandwich more after eating it.

Nice place to come to and relax after a long day at the beach! Great coffee! Had there macadamia nut pie tonight for dessert with my mocha.

Best ice coffee on the island. Grab a coffee or ice cream and sit outside and watch the surf. If you are up for it try an affogado. It's the perfect combo of sweet and a pick me up!

I found this cute petite cafe during my vacation last week. Coffee tasted fantastic. The view from the terrace was amazing. I still remember its aroma even after I came back to Houston. The very morning my wife and I started with espressos in Kona Haven perfectionated my first vacation to Big Island.
