This used to be my go to Zippy's way back before the Kahala location opened up. Now it's not the closest location to my house, and they don't have a dine-in section, so I don't come here quite as much anymore. They recently went through some minor renovations, so it's been prettied up a bit. They still serve the same great Zippy's food, and their Napoleon's Bakery is usually pretty well stocked. The thing I like most about this location is that it's between work and home, whenever I have any benefit chili tickets that are going to expire I'll make a stop on my way home from work, and cash them in!

If you are in the area and looking for a quick bite or dessert to take to a party, stop by. Service is friendly. No dine in sitting, open air only. They do need a remodel.

This Zippy's was actually the second Zippy's location to ever open up, which I guess makes it some sort of historical landmark... At any rate, to me, this place is just "A-OK." The mediocre 3-star rating is mostly due to the weird, non-24-hour weeknight hours. Maybe I'm spoiled, having grown up in Pearl City, where both the Waimalu and Pearl City Zips are both true 24/7 restaurants...? I feel like it's a common expectation for Zippy's to be open all day and all night, every day and every night. But I guess times are hard... And maybe the Kaimuki community doesn't party or stay up and eat late, or über early in the AM I should say. The hours for this Kaimuki (Waialae) Zippy's is as follows: Sunday-Thursday: 5:30am-12am Friday & Saturday: 24 hours (all day and night) Aside from the hours, I can't really think of any major downers. The staff at this Zippy's are usually friendly and the food is ready pretty quickly. Quality is always a priority at this location. The food presentation is always consistent and as greasy like at some other Zippy's. Zippy's usually has 2 style dining option areas - the restaurant (dine in) and the outside-style (take out) side. This location, however, only has the outside option (plus bakery). The style of dining deal I just mentioned isn't a neg, but more of a matter-of-fact / BTW-type statement. Just an FYI. I love both in and out dining options. If I want to eat restaurant style, Kahala Zippy's isn't too far away. But this Kaimuki one is just fine - the bf and I usually grab our food to-go and eat at home anyway. (Gotta love those chili fundraiser tickets.) Anyway, I am a fan. I just wish the hours were better. Yelp 365 - #211/365

What a godsend to have Zippy's 24/7! Thank you Zippy's for you and your employees at 2:30am when I was needing food so badly. While I don't normally frequent this place at all for their prices, I am grateful to them a couple of times where I was up working on some stuff and needed food to continue on. While I did not dine in the dining area, the service was average - especially at 2:30am when it was practically dead. It wasn't dreadfully slow, but it felt like it was slower than it was. Zippy's offers local comfort food at higher than normal prices versus the other competition, but people just eat them up, since its good food. They pretty much have everything you'd want, unless larger portions for the same amount of money @ L&L Barbeque is your fantasy. For me, Zippy's was out of the norm for me, but I am grateful for them when I needed them. The parking situation is pretty good. They have a small lot for their customers so that is a big plus. Sometimes, it can be full, so do watch out. The times I did come here, it was empty - since at 2:30am - most people are sleeping anyway.

No ones perfect! We all make a mistakes an hopefully learn from them. Like I said b4 this zippys is tiny.. Yet dont be fooled by size.. This place can feed a train load of peeps! I give them 5-stars cause they sure do try to make any customer happy. The staff here are always on the go an working smarter! No lazy workers at this location! This location is pretty busy too! The management (returned the bite) with feedback. I really liked that! That really shows me that they respect the customers an will do what ever it takes to make the customers next visit better! 5-stars across the board for my return review!

OoOh Zippys, i wish we had you in LA! They have everything here!!! Everything from chili cheese burrito to oxtail soup! It took us awhile to get our food but it was kind of worth it. I got the Zip Pac, it came with a piece of fried chicken, teriyaki beef, and a fish filet all on top of a bed of rice that was covered in like seaweed seasonings... YUMMY!!! my sister got the mahi mahi sandwich and a cup of chili. the chili was really good! everyone around us was eating ramen, and it looked so good since it was a rainy day....maybe next time ill get the oxtail soup :)

I was jonesing for some fried chicken tonight, and had originally headed out to Popeye's in Kapahulu. Unfortunately for me, the Popeye's parking lot was full, and there was no other street parking available so I decided to go to another favorite joint of mine.........Zippy's in Kaimuki. Upon arriving at the Kaimuki Zippy's, I could see the parking lot was quite full, but I was lucky enough to secure a parking stall. When I got to the ordering counter to place my order, I ordered (2) pieces of Zippy's fried chicken. My chicken came out fast, because as soon as I walked around the corner to get a complimentary cup of water, the clerk gives me my two pieces of fried chicken in a paper bag. As I picked up my fried chicken, I went to one of the booths to eat it, and upon opening the bag, I see one of the two pieces (see pic) of fried chicken all shriveled up & dried! YUCK! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????? How can you sever a paying customer something like that? The cook who put this order together, should put him or her in the customer's shoes!!!! Think about it.......if you paid money for something, would you eat a fried chicken all shriveled up, dried up like a piece of ROCK???? Your prices for the fried chicken are not cheap too......as you folks charge $5.24 for two small pieces of chicken thighs. The only thing good about all of this was when I brought back the shriveled dried up piece of chicken to the counter. I asked one of the girls who was working there - "if she was the manager?" She told me "no", I then proceeded to tell her the issue I had with my fried chicken I received, and all she had was a dumbfounded look on her face & really did not do anything. But the girl who took my order (I think her name was Keahau) walked over from the other side of the counter, and addressed my concern. She looked into the bag & saw the shriveled, dried up piece of fried chicken, and apologized immediately. She told me that fried chicken piece should have never been served to anyone, and that she will let the people in the back know about this. She then went to the back (cooking area) & promptly got two new juicy pieces of fried chicken for me. Now this is what I call great customer service, and Keahau should be recognized for her professionalism, and wonderful customer service skills! I then went back to my table & finished up my meal........and the replacement fried chicken was of the standard that Zippy's is known for.

Okay I retract my former Yelp review. I just went there after work it took them 15 minutes to make my mini Korean chicken plate. They kept skipping over my order when I was one of the first people in there. When I came in it wasn't even crowded, but after 15 minutes of waiting there, there was a build up of people. Do yourself a favor and go to the one down Kapahulu, at least there's air conditioning over there.

While this Zippys location is super convenient for me, I must say Zippys company in general is such a downer. Everything is so expensive & it seems their quality has really gone down. I hate that this location is an "open" restaurant. I admit I'm spoiled....I like to be indoors with AC without homeless walking through any old time & digging in the garbage. I also hate the dirty pigeons & doves that flock here, scrounging for food. SO! I always phone my orders in & pick up to go. I stopped by the other night after work & got a Korean chicken plate & large orange bang. My total came out to $13! My chicken was mostly just skin & batter with hardly any sauce & my orange bang was watery.

This is a small Zippy's located on the corner of Waialae and 7th Ave. I gave this location 2 stars because it doesn't have a dine in restaurant. Also it's open air, so you are subjected to the elements, and also sometimes strange people. This is the kind of Zippy's that you order takeout from if you are in the area. As far as food goes, it's good standard Zippy's fare. Some of my favorite Zippy's item's include Chili (I prefer bean-less), Portuguese Bean Soup (wish I could order bean-less), Portuguese Omelet Sandwich, Fried Noodles (large platter is great for parties), Fried Chicken, and Mahi mahi (I'm addicted to their tarter sauce) Service here has been good. No complaints. Like I said earlier, food and service is pretty standard, but since they are small, older, and don't have dine in, I'm only able to give it 2 stars.

Not very happy with this one it cost me more to have a chili chicken plate without the rice and mac salad then it would have just have the regular chili chicken please very displeased and the birds in the eating area are horrible at one point they were sitting on the back of the bench across from me trying to get food I had to physically stand up to make them go away avoiding this one in the future maybe all the Zippy's

I would like to update my review because my most recent visit was much better than my last one. First, please note that this location only has an outdoor area. There is no restaurant. The service here today was really good. Both the lady taking orders from the window and the lady at the bakery were very, very nice! I don't tend to see variations in the quality of food at different Zippy's location so I'm not going to elaborate on their food quality. It was just as to be expected. As mentioned previously, one piece of chicken is still $2.40 which I think is quite overpriced. I am very pleased with the fact that they cleaned up their bathroom and it no longer has an overpowering urine smell. It was generally cleaner overall, thank you. I made it a point to visit the bathroom because of my last review and I'm glad I did.

Zippy's Kaimuki has been my family's go-to "oh my god, we're in a rush and need to eat dinner fast, but where??" restaurant. Their Kaimuki location is so close and convenient to where I live, so Zippy's is like always on my list when I'm hungry. It's probably a fact that every local has been to a Zippy's. I don't know why I'm even saying it, it's a fact. Parking is usually not an issue since they have a good sized lot. This Zippy's is not really the dine-in type, most customers are grabbing dinner or lunch on their way home, however, there are a lot of seats if you choose to dine in. Service is usually polite and fast, workers are friendly and efficient. Birthdays are wonderful when you live so close to a Napoleon's bakery, you can just park, choose a cake, and you're on your way. It's rather magnificent. Napoleon cakes are so good. Have you ever tried their Oreo cake? Do it. Food at Zippy's Kaimuki is like every other, I don't even want to know how many Zip packs I've ordered at this location alone. haha But it is always delicious and it is always filling. But my, the price has gone up! Small price to pay for a local staple. I'm hoping however, that they renovate some things, the store is beginning to look dingy and dirty, I'm sure it is clean for the most part, but it is an open-air restaurant. Nonetheless, Zippy's Kaimuki will always be there for you, so why not repay the favor and visit them!

I don't know what's going on with zippy's these days. I took my family there for dinner last week. My 10 year old daughter ordered the kids mac n cheese and I swear it was about a tablespoon portion for $5. She was still hungry and wanted another one. I told her it wasn't worth it so she got banana royale for dessert which was 2 scoops of ice cream, some sliced bananas with toppings in a small cup for $7. Me wife order the oxtail soup which came in a bowl a little bigger then a typical rice bowl and the was $16. We're not an overweight family and I'm not complaining about the price but at zippy's need to at least realize what the competition gives for similar prices. They are no longer a go to place for us.

What can I say? It's Zippy's. I am not a big fan of Zippy's in general. I think the food is not good and I would rather spend my calories on something that tastes better. This location looks like it stays busy but parking is easy in their lot. If I need rice and mac salad quick for dinner, it is a great price to pick some up to go along with our main dish for dinner.

Im a zippys worker and these worker were quite inattentive. I ordered 2 salads 1 regular 1 mini which should take all of 5 mins to make. I waited 15 mins and watched people after me getting their food, finally i went up to the window and inquired where my salads were only to find they were left on the side. Quite disappointed.

Bad. Came here late one night after arriving back from Vegas and needed a place to grab a "local" bite of food since we were craving something local after being away for a week. Since it was 10:30 our take out options were limited. I was craving Chicken Katsu and white rice, Lauren V. wanted a grill cheese sandwich and french fries. I realize we're not at a michelin star restaurant but how do you screw up Chicken Katsu and French Fries? The Katsu was over fried, scrawny thin pieces of chicken that should have been white in color were now a discolored yellow/brown from being overcooked. Hell, it was like they cut up the chicken and fried it as pieces. Gross. The French Fries... hard, crunchy and brown... not golden in color, brown to golden brown. We're talking about operating a fryer, not a rocket ship. I really expected a bit more. Never again.

Usually have good service when ever I come here or call in. Food is always good and well maybe because I always get the same Thing all the time. Favorites are breakfast hours. Fried rice, bacon crispy and over easy eggs and side of dashi! Yup and thats usually my drunk food too.Their port. Sausage omlette sandwich is ono as well! Too bad breakfast hours weren't 24/7!!

This is my weekend brunch spot. It's no hipster/super vegan/acai bowl/cash only/lines out the door kinda place, but it's my place. It's my classic never fail omelette/hash brown/sweet bread french toast/orange bang brunch place that will never go out of style and best of all, never change. Some things just work.

Overall - great customer service from management and from staff - decent food - nicely stocked bakery This review is from a cake order I made last year on November 15, 2013. I placed an order in person 3 days prior to my event, November 12, 2013. The worker who took my order was not very personable and made it seem like I was inconveniencing her. Didn't say hi or smile just stood and stared at me. She wrote everything down on the order form and had me look to verify that the information provided was correct. On November 15 I went to pick up my order. There was a young worker who was very friendly and personable. I told her I'm here to pick up a cake order and gave her my name. She went to the back and checked. She came back to verify the name that the cake was under and what was written on the cake. She went to the back again and was gone for a very long time. When she came back I saw her look into the bakery and pulled out the last three dobash cakes that were there. A man came to the counter and introduced himself to me as the manager. He told me that there seems to be a problem and they didn't receive my cake from their main bakery. He informed and assured me that he will give me my money back. He also said that he will give me the last three dobash cakes he had because it is equivalent to a 1/4 sheet cake that I ordered. The girl came back and asked if I would like writing on all three cakes. I told her it was completely fine and only writing happy birthday on one was sufficient. She insisted saying that it was not a problem to her and she'd be willing to do it if I wanted. The manager gave me back my money, apologized, and even offered to help carry the cakes to my car. I feel like Zippy's went above and beyond with the customer service. I really didn't expect that I'd get my money back and cakes. They were very accommodating and professional.

***3.5 stars*** we were told that this is where the locals eat, and indeed, this is the place to come if you want hawaiian fast food at cheap prices. hubby and i ordered: small saimin noodles: saimin noodles in a hot soup base with 2 pieces of pork and a fish cake tuna sandwich with side salad: tuna, tomato, and lettuce on white bread with side of mixed greens and side of ginger sesame dressing surfrider special: beef, fried chicken, and spam on a bed of rice. the saimin noodles were probably the best thing we had, partly due to the fact that this is a unique menu item that we don't see on the mainland. the noodles were soft and chewy, and the broth very flavourful. the tuna sandwich was something that i could have made myself, but that was to be expected. a medium-sized scoop of tuna fish salad on each half of the sandwich, with fresh tomato (these were quite good) and lettuce made for a good tasting sandwich. while the salad was just ok, the dressing was really good, again, not something that i see regularly on the mainland. my husband practically devoured the surfrider special since it was practically all meat! i didn't try any of this but he said the meat was good, and definitely very filling. for $17 and change, we were given an ample amount of food to fill our bellies for lunch. while the quality is typical for a fast food chain, we were glad that we had a chance to try this local favourite.

Called in to place a take out order at 6am on Sunday 12/28, the phone rang and rang - no answer! Called back again and finally someone answered. I places my order 2 plates of Portuguese sausage, eggs and fried rice, one over easy and one scrambled, sausage well done on both. Not too hard to make right? My 10 year old niece can do that.. well! What did I get? Sausage barely browned, and fried eggs over easy? Why not just give them to me in the shell? The plate was full of clear uncooked egg whites, and I paid almost $17 for this? Talk about not giving a crap. The cook should have seen it as well as the cashier who closed the container up. The kicker is that when I got there I saw 4 cars in the lot and 1 person ordering. Lame! I see a lot of complaints lately in FB about the quality coming out of Zippys. Well now I'm one of those people... Pissed!

Just tried making a phone order 20 minutes before they close, and got turned down. They should change their hours if operation if they don't want to fulfill orders up until closing. That's bad service.

Wow, I can't believe how blatantly rude these cashiers were (both of them)! The chili tasted the same as other zippy's since it was prepared at the central location in Waipo, then defrosted here.

  • R M.

The quality of food at the various Zippy's is surprisingly consistent; you can get a good meal at any of the ones I have tried: Nimitz, McCully, Kapahulu, Kahala, Vineyard, Makiki and Ala Moana. (The last was in Sears; it is closed as that end of the mall is being renovated for Bloomingdale.) We got an excellent apple pie from Kaimuki, but it came from a central bakery. The pastries rate 4 starts.

After getting off the plane, Zippy's is our first stop for local food. We love the chili, grill cheese, musubi's and the plate lunches. * I had a hair on the top of my chili, so make sure to check before you start eating :) The staff was super friendly and got us a new one.

Since I seem to be on a Zippy's kick lately ... This Kaimuki place is the smaller kind with take-out windows, but you can also sit down, and while this part of Waialae Avenus may not be the best place for people watching, the birds seemed under control and the tables seemed clean and all in all not a bad ambience, even after dark on a Sunday night. The chili may be the same as at all the other Zippy's, but is that bad? Hey, that was a rhetorical question! But, no ... it's not a bad thing. It's a good thing. Because it is good chili: Hearty, tasty, not greasy. And pretty cheap, too. As ever, a shout-out for the coconut nappie. Even Sunday evening, Napoleon's had a fresh tray of all manner of nappies (coconut, apple, cherry ...) These things are big and at less than $2 per ....

Taking into price, portion size, presentation, and quality, this place isn't the place you want to go for Portuguese sausage, rice, and eggs breakfast. For a little over $4 you get 2 small eggs, 3 pieces of sausage, and half the container filled with rice. I ordered the #3: Portuguese sausage, rice, eggs, and corned beef hash. The corned beef hash was probably my favorite followed by the sausage. With way too much rice, I dumped a little less than half of it in the end. Honestly, I felt a little ripped off and felt like it is usually done better at McDonalds for cheaper and better. Guess I should just stick with the chili and rice from now on. Food comes out FAST (almost immediately) at the next window.

Dear Waialae Zippys, Bleah. I would stop there but I suspect it would be an insufficient review for yelp. Hounded by my children's ridiculous yet constant cries for food (I seriously had just fed them, like, five hours prior), I was forced to stop by your establishment for the loudly desired cheese sandwiches and fried noodles. I forked over my $11 for two cheese sandwiches that I could make at home but didn't want to, and a mini fried noodles that I probably could also easily make at home, but never have so it seems mysterious. My 3 years old loves cheese sandwiches. Almost as much as she loves beef balls and hot dogs. And though that sentence seems slightly odd, I choose to leave it. Regardless, she only ate about a third of the sandwich before refusing to eat any more. You know those butter adverts that show ants swarming around butter but avoiding margarine, the ones that claim we should only eat what ants will eat? Because their little ant-y intuition is superior to our human intellect? Well, if my daughter doesn't like the cheese sandwich, then no one should eat the cheese sandwich. This isn't a waif of a girl, she's thick. Carrying her is like carrying a bag of cement. And sure enough, I took a bite and it was not quite vile, but definitely not good. I think it would be best described as "almost really gross". As for the fried saimin... It crossed the line to definitely really gross. The toppings rolled about on a congealed chunk of tasteless oily noodles. I had to pull them apart one by one, which turned out to be a pointless activity as my son balked after one bite. So yes. Bleah. I will not be seeing you again. Fortunately for me you are but one of many. Like a good looking white guy. Or a dancing Filippino. Sincerely, Angela

Today is Thursday October 3, 2013. On Tuesday October 1, 2013 I went to Zippys on my lunch break. I opted for the chef salad to keep my caloric intake low. The salad was disappointing to look at, but I didn't expect much. What was alarming is that I did take a single bite of the chicken in the salad and knew instantly it was bad. I discarded the salad and went back to work relating my disappointing salad to my boss. Today is Thursday, and since Tuesday night I have experienced the worst food poisoning from Zippys. I've not been able to hold down any food or much more than a few ounces of fluid. What is incredibly disappointing and disgusting about getting food poisoning from restaurant prepared food is that NEVER in my entire adult life of cooking have I ever poisoned myself or loved ones. There have been times where we have eaten old food, but never in the conditions where lack of hygiene would cause anyone to get sick. This is why giving customers FOOD POISONING is deplorable. It should be considered an act of criminality on some level because the food poisoining could literally kill a person. On a positive note. I must be slightly on the mend, because I am able to type my dismay on Yelp. Interestingly, this is the only Zippys location that appears unconcerned with hygiene. Did I mention that it took a customer next to me about 20 minutes to receive her Chilli bowl? There were no other customers except for me and her (maybe the rest of town is onto the crappy conditions of this location) This Zippys location does not measure up to the standards other Zippys locations have established for its reputation. I will be sure to tell my colleagues and friends to avoid this Zippys location unless they have an iron gut and a penchant for crap service. Also, Zippys Kaimuki - keep your coffee fresh and change it out every three hours. Sheesh. If I could give less than one star to give this review, then I certainly would.

I was prompted to write this review after reading an earlier post which read: "You can't go wrong with the chili rice..." NOT SO FAST. Tonight, I went wrong with the chili rice. I called ahead with what I thought would be a simple order: Three chili rice bowls with brown rice...STOP, NO BROWN RICE...okay, white rice then, and two with no-beans. When I showed up, much to my dismay, there was a homeless woman posted conspicuously at the front entrance. Now, for those who live in Kaimuki or visit regularly, she is well-known: Caucasian; weird bright blue eyes; curly hair; stares you down; is always engaged in two-way conversation with herself; see through tank top w/no "support;" best of all, smells like she bathes in a cesspool. I held my nose as I passed by and headed for the pick-up window. Lucky me, Princess Stinky had an order to pick up, too. What I would've given for a little sinus congestion. I was shocked when she angrily grabbed her plate and headed for the dining room, posting herself among several families just trying to enjoy their dinners. I am all for compassion for those less fortunate, but this was ridiculous. Those employees, or especially a supervisor, should have intervened for the sake of the other customers (and public health) and asked her to leave. I guess maybe they chose the politically correct option at the expense of other patrons. Oh yeah: to top it all off, my two no-bean chili's? Yep, beans! Come on Zippy's Kaimuki. You can do better than that. Sheesh.

I have to admit that I've only ordered 2 things from Zippy's: The chili moco and the spaghetti. They're so tasty... I just can't get myself to order anything else. The chili moco with an egg over medium is my fave!

Zippy's is one of my favorite fast food restaurants in Hawaii. Ordered large chili rice ($4.45) and fried saimin ($6.70). Chili rice: I saw frozen Zippy's chili @ Marukai and I was always curious about this. Glad I finally tried the fresh one because it was so good. The chili was tasty and I ordered mine with one scoop of rice. This chili rice was so filling. Fried saimin: I am a fan of Zippy's fried saimin. I always get this everytime. Do not feed the birds. That was the sign posted on the wall. What birds? Then I saw a bird landed on my table begging for food LOL The same bird went to the open trash container and couldn't get out of it. Another bird joined him and had the same problem. Eating with birds...welcome to Hawaii ;) 4 stars!! Cheap and good food. Zippy's is yummylicious!!

What can I say? Zippy's has always been an island favorite, granted the portions are a lot smaller and prices continue to be jacked up. We visited this location for dinner, although I opted to go to the Kahala one, my other half pointed out that this location was nearest to us. I did not like that their is no dine in area. It's pretty open and so we sat of course, in the take out area. I always feel like these areas are a bit dirty. Anyhow, we ordered and as always the staff here are rarely with a smile and always look tired. No special treatment here, just hurry up and order. My son and other half got the fried chicken and I got my Korean Fried Chicken with lilikoi juice as our drinks. No doubt-they were delicious! I guess when it comes down to it, who cares about everything else, so long as your fave dish is still happening and tasted amazing!

Best to call your order in advance. I decided to go there to eat in the other night. I ordered my usual Chili Chicken mixed plate. Was busy that night so I waited awhile. The chicken wasn't hot. Its really hit or miss with the chicken. This night was a bad night for chicken. The parking lot can get full sometimes.

I love Zippys, any Zippys but this is my Zippys of choice only because it's really close to my house. Sure they're slow, but I haven't found a Zippys that was, well, zippy. You can't go wrong with the chili rice, spaghetti garlic bread, or wun tun min and my current favorite is the kokua pac which was supposed to be temporary but they brought back! Also, make sure to check out the bakery and pick up some apple napples (they're turnovers) or check out what the flavor of the month is. The only downsides are there are almost always crazy people in this (they usually keep to themselves) and this location isn't 24 hours. I really should give it a lower rating but it's just so convenient and so tasty...

Happy to have Zippy's near to work. Happy to have Zippy's late night hours. Happy to have Napoleon's Bakery to satisfy my terrible sweet tooth. Had a mini chili spaghetti last night and the garlic bread was barely warm, and not enough garlic. Oh how picky can i get??? Zippy's, thank you for dinner last night. I was happy to have a meal that wasn't 'fast fried food'. I had the chocolate donut holes for a quarter each... So I'm happy! Yelp 365 Challenge: 102/365

Horrible service. Came here early Saturday morning, like 2am, after a night out. The employees just ignored my friends and I. They just ignored my friends and I to the point where we had to say "excuse me" multiple times and "can I get some service here?!" Finally, we were helped by a girl. We ordered some pastries and a breakfast bento. If I could, I would give them 0 stars. I'm sorry, but that's just totally unacceptable for a restaurant, even if it's just take out.

My dad wanted the chicken cutlet special so we called the kapahulu location but no one answered so we ended up ordering from this location. As we walked in we noticed a lady waiting to order some pastries... With 4 workers in the back staring at the food window waiting for food to come out not doing anything. They had a trainee cashier and a line of people to order, they could easily have opened the second window with the extra employees doing nothing. We then went back over to order pastries and they finally had two people there. When we got home and looked at our food we were disappointed. (should have checked it there!) barely any gravy on the chicken cutlet, dry Mac salad and a small piece of chicken in my chili chicken. This was defiantly our last time here. Never again!

Oooohhhh how I miss you my dear friend, Zippy's. You can't go wrong with the fast service, great variety, and late hours...not to mention the AWEsome food. Feel like eating chicken...they've got it. How about soups/saimin...they've got it. No how about fish...yep they've got it. Nah, change your mind to a stew or short ribs...well they've got that too. You can always find something to eat....hello CHILI! Don't even get me started on the desserts. Donuts (check), pies (check), danishes (check), cakes (check)....and shut the front door when it comes to their famous naples (for those of you from the mainland, naples = turnovers). Apple naples, coconut naples, cherry napples, blueberry and cream cheese naples...OH MY. And FYI the packaged chili or portuguese bean soup is good....but it's not quite the same as the 2am early morning run to the restaurant.

this has not been my favorite zippy's location ever. not by a longshot. truth is, service is so slow you'd think they have senior citizens manning the kitchen. nothing against our beloved seniors, but if they cook like they drive, the analogy (or metaphor) fits. time after time, this location has kept me waiting and waiting for orders. for this reason alone, I've typically gone elsewhere to get my zippy's fix. aside from the teeny-tiny parking stalls (what's with that anyway?) this location looks old, run down and dare I say a bit shoddy compared to some of their more recently renovated locations. kinda amusing that their kitchen counter/window is seated low, so anyone checking on orders in the kitchen automatically shows their butt to anyone at the cashier's counter. since all I was doing during this visit was picking up some takeout, my visit was surprisingly pleasant. my order was out the chute in no time flat, and barely provided me enough time to scope out the skin-tight pants of the butt of the head cashier or "expediter" in restaurant terminology. nice. ok, I'll admit I added an extra rating star because the expediter wasn't bad looking either - fortunately she was not one of those cute old 50 year old, 5'-6, 250 lb workers that you'll commonly see elsewhere like down the road at st louis drive in. extra star for eye candy. ha ha!! hamburger steak plate: hold the onions. good. gravy over. held onions. not piping hot, but hot nonetheless and quality was zippy's - dependable and not really disappointing at all. maybe this location is turning a new leaf?

I am a total Zippy's girl. I grew up on the stuff and everytime I go home I always have to eat there as much as possible before I leave. Sure they changed their menu (no mo' strawberry float slush!!!) and beef cutlet isn't on the menu everyday (only on certain days). But still get my faves like chili with rice (extra cheese and onions please), burrito with chili, zip pac, beef cutlet, and now get orange whip woohooo!!! Oh yeah, got to have the apple napples, chocolate cream center donut, ensemada, and chocolate eclair from Napoleon's Bakery YUM!!!! My family and friends love the oxtail soup too :)

I grew up in Hawaii, so I've been eating Zippy's forever. For the 8 years I lived on the mainland, I always craved their famous chili and would make a stop (or 2 or 3) every time I came back home. Now that I've moved back home to Hawaii, though, I have become increasingly disappointed. Maybe it is me readjusting to Hawaii prices, but when did Zippy's get so expensive?! $8+ for a loco moco (eggs, rice, hamburger, and gravy)?!?! Ouch! Most other things on the menu seem similarly overpriced. Good thing they have been sending out a lot of coupons lately -- it brings prices back down to reasonable levels. 2 bad recent experiences stand out in my mind. Both happened at the Waialae Ave location. 1) After a late night out, I was craving some oxtail soup. At 2:00 in the morning, we didn't have many choices available to us, so we stopped by Zippy's despite it's expensive $12+ price tag. We ordered 2 bowls and headed home. What a disappointment!!! The soup was luke warm at best and had chunks of fat floating around as if they had just taken the soup out of the refrigerator and didn't skim off the top. The pieces of oxtail soup were about 75% fat and the meat was far from falling off the bones. With very little actual pieces of meat and soup that I couldn't even enjoy because of all the fat, I was very unsatisfied. Boo :( 2) On the way home from work we phoned in a take-out order so we wouldn't have to wait long. Despite the advance order, we ended up waiting for about 30 minutes (after the 10 min drive to get us there) for 2 teri burgers and fries. All the while the staff was just chatting and ignoring us when we tried to get their attention. We finally got our food and took it home. They didn't even get our order right! We had a regular hamburger, not a teri burger. Not a huge deal, but we were already a bit peeved about the long wait and poor customer service. While the food and service is not always constant, we continue going to Zippy's because it is convenient and our back-up when we don't feel like cooking. It's okay...

I think this has to be the ONLY Zippy's restaurant that consistently gets my order wrong. When they repeat my order, it's correct. But once I get the food, it's just wrong. I said beanless chili! Why are there beans in my beanless chili? Or why do I get chopsticks for my burger and fries? Go to Kahala Zippy's instead.

People who grew up in Hawaii feel me when I say, "Ain't no chili like Zippy's!" We order that shiz off the internet for $14 a bag. It's like crack, yo. Not only do they have grubbin' late night local food, they have Napoleon's Bakery - which is not necessarily top tier pastry making - but I dare someone to find anything comparable to Chantilly Cream Puffs.

I have dreams about the perfect Loco Moco. Mmmm...savory dark brown gravy, perfectly cooked fried eggs with runny yokes, a smokey, tender burger resting on top of a mountain of steamy rice. I love Loco Moco so much, I would actually marry it. Really. Well, we went to Zippy's for a late and fattening breakfast, and I have to admit I left feeling on the fence. My Loco Moco was really pretty good - tasty gravy, perfectly cooked eggs, yummy burger. But, and this is a big but, my rice was cold. So was my boyfriend's. He ordered the Chilli Hot Dog plate, and we both concured that the chili was kinda gross. Pair that with cold rice, and well, that hot dog's feeling pretty lonely. Lastly, it took forever to get our food, which while we were waiting, made me think it would arrive hot and fresh due to the fact that they must be making it from scratch. Instead, it seemed like it was likely sitting on the counter a little too long. I would probably go back, mainly because they have so many items on the menu I'd be willing to give it another try.

This is the first Zippy's I have been to. It seems like there is one every few miles in Honolulu so I had to check it out. The menu is defiantly local Hawaiian. Portuguese bean soup, chili, hot dogs, plate lunches, and Asian food. I was told that they were revered for their chili and had it on one occasion as take out. This Zippy's has a "drive-in" area where you can walk up, get your food and sit down, or be seated in a restaurant area. They also have a sushi place near the drive-in area. I ordered a bean burrito with chili on it and a cup of Portuguese soup. Khara had Korean fried chicken with rice and a soup. The food was okay. I would not rave about it and I cannot complain. This place would be awesome at 4:00 AM after a night of drinking. My burrito was without a doubt something like a microwaveable Reser's burrito with chili on it. The soup was good and the Korean fried chicken was good. Here is their webpage: zippys.com I do not think it is much help unless you want to order food online. I need to go back and try other things on the menu to truly appreciate Zippy's. I see they have pigs feet soup as the special on January 22nd. I hear there are 10 other plate lunch places I need to check out. After that, I will be able to judge Zippy's better.

This place is like a Shari's/Dennys..Hawaiian style. Best Korean fried chicken you can get at 2AM with a side of rice and some bomb macaroni salad. No complaints here.

Zippys is to Hawaii what Dennys is to the rest of America. This is where you go when you have a late night with friends. Zippys is good for daytime take out to take to the beach. Zippys is good for after your symphony concert with a friend. Zippys is where relationships are made and broken. Zippys will be there long after everyone else goes off to college. Classics: Chili! You have to have the Chili! Chili Cheese Fries! Korean style Chicken! YummY!

Zippy's had one of the best hamburger steak plate I have eaten. They changed it some time ago and recently made another change. Good try... Better but still not like the original. It was worth the extra wait....

Mmmmm zippy's... plate lunch... As good as any other one on the island, with possibly a little better quality control since it's a chain... NOT something to eat every day... or your days will be very numbered and coming up soon!

This place ok, sloooow service, dirt cheap, but food sucks here unless you are extremely drunk and order a pork saimin soup, it will taste like heaven. Tried the same soup sober and it tastes like crap....apologize to all the Zippys fans....

After we play golf, this is where we head to get a decently priced meal. Real local stick to the ribs food is what they serve here. My favorites, are Oxtail Soup, Hamburger Steak Plate, Fried Chicken Plate or whattever specials may be that day, all with a side order of macaroni salad and Raspberry Tea ( free unlimted refills). Open 24 hrs how can you beat that.................

Having been to quite a few of them, I like the atmosphere of this location the best. A/C, beautiful saltwater tank, and clean! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Zip Pack all the way!
