This place makes me sad. Really really sad. I love the food, and the cute streetfront, but my most recent experience has left my mouth dry and unappreciative. My plate consisted of chicken, chow fun, crab fishcake, hash, two furikake musubi, one spam musubi, chorizo. My plate cost me $19.90 The cook began ringing us up. Then the guy at the front takes over. My bf asked the guy at the front, " WHA? That plate was $20???" The guy just sort of looked away. Never answered. We got back to the car, and my bf gets pissed, goes back with the plate, and complains. The cooks indignantly says, "You got the beef stew too, remember?" Yeah, we did get the beef stew. That's why our whole meal cost us $39.00. So he then tells my bf, "I only overcharged you $3.93." He hands the money over. Now, I understand that people make mistakes. This was a blatant OVERCHARGING. We never got a receipt, but luckily, I still have a menu from a previous visit. Even with the $3.93 we got back, we were still overcharged. We thought we had found a new weekly breakfast joint, and had been going there every weekend for the past four or five weekends - WHY OH WHY would this establishment try to make a quick buck off of us when we would have gladly given them business for as long as they were in business? We support local wherever we can, but we cannot continue to do so if supporting local means they rip us off! It's with a heavy heart that I hit the "post" button.

okay I know that Okazuya food can be pricey but WOW.... this place is VERY Pricey. I dont recall the food tasting that great either. So maybe I went on the wrong day or maybe I just tasted better and expected more value for my money.

I love my Okazuya, so was anxious to try Nu'uanu Okazuya. I know it had changed ownership and it had been over four years since I had been there. I used to love the chow fun there, that had chicken in it. The chow fun now is tasteful with nothing but the chow fun noodles. All the items I ordered were seasoned well, but just a bit too much salt and pepper. The food is good but I have to say there are better Okazuya places. The mochiko chicken and furikake chicken were a major disappointment. I did like the chicken long rice which was seasoned well. The cone sushi was small but moist and tasty. The gobo with carrot was fresh & spicy, I can see enjoying that as a pupu with a drink. The potota/mac. salad was rather tasteless. I also got an order of green beans sauteed with lup chong, way too much pepper in that. All together, nothing to really rave about. My sister had given me a $10. gift card and I still ended up spending $9. more. Their food is on the pricey side, compared to St. Louis Okazuya and other places. Everyone has their favorite Okazuya place. I wouldn't make a special trip to Nu'uanu Okazuya, but if in the area, I may try some of their other items. They had Oxtail Stew in a warming dish. I love Oxtail Stew so may go back just for that!

First of all, the customer service is great, the woman who helped me was kind and sweet. That being said, the food was quite lacking. I ordered chow funn (a little on the saltier side with no veggies), chicken long rice (definitely WAY too salty), corned beef hash (salty with little corned beef in it) and shoyu hotdog (did not have enough time to soak up the shoyu it was marinating in). If anyone knows good okazuya places, please let me know! I am definitely looking for a good place.

God! If only I lived in Hawaii. My family's been coming here for years! Literally--over 50. Change of ownership, but still a place we have to stop at 2-3 times each visit. We love their saimin, meat sticks, and the okazuya of course. I love the boiled egg fishcake, fried saimin noodles, saimin, and mac salad. Other favorites of the family include fishcake hotdog, pumpkin, chicken katsu, and fishcake. I like how the head chef mixes it up when we order saimin. Usually has a piece of chicken katsu, char siu, and some other fishcakes. The broth is so flavorful and the noodles have a good bite to them. The fried saimin is so tasty--has a good peppery flavor. It's always so fun to come here, look in the window, and salivate. The current owner, head chef, and staff are always super nice. One of my favorite little spots.

Been here before and food is ok but prices are higher than most other Okazuya places. Just went here at 5:45am and got the Safeway special which is the Furikake chicken katsu with chow fun and a musubi for 5 bucks. Furikake katsu was good but chow fun had little flavor and charsiu but for price it was worth it. Very filling. Ill buy couple more tomorrow. hehe need the coupon on back of Safeway receipts.

I enjoy a good okazuya....actually that is a lie....I haven't met an okazuya I didn't like....but that is beside the fact..... Nuuanu is the real deal....and it is definitely one of my favorites. Here are a couple of reasons why: Really good food Nuuanu has amazing katsu. They put a magical sauce on it that makes it crazy ono! You cant stop eating it! It is always crunchy and they cut it up for you so you don't look like a fool trying to shove it all in your mouth at once. The nishime here is also really good....sweet and savory, you can tell it has been slow cooked for a long time. I also enjoy their vegetable and shrimp tempura. Crispy and yummy....it is so good. Good service They are always helpful here and are very quick. Just wait in line and point out what you want. Open early For those of us who would rather eat lunch at 530 in the morning....this is your place. Like most traditional okazuyas...they are open early and run out around lunch time....so get there early! A couple of parting thoughts.... -Okazuyas are not cheap any more....bring at least a twenty dollar bill if your hungry. -I have never been early enough to try the andagi, but I heard it is amazing. I may just have to place an order for one of the 75 different flavors.....

I only paid one visit to Nu'uanu Okazuya (NO) in the early morning on a Monday--in order to enjoy the full selection of savory delicacies--and boy, would I visit again in a heartbeat. This hole-the-wall shop is undoubtedly small, but compensates its size for the big-time flavors of the numerous menu items. Though I only ordered a few things for my plate--which I enjoyed almost immediately when I reached home--there are so many more menu items I want to try. Everything is priced a la carte (except for the "Daily Bento" and a few other menu items), and be forewarned: this place closes in the early afternoon, so to get the cream of the crop, in terms of selection, go EARLY! (In fact, they open at 5 a.m., so you can get breakfast before work). Here's what I would recommend: "Furikake Katsu": I remember getting the furikake katsu as part of my order, and it was one of my favorite things from this eatery (I think it's one of the best sellers as well). The breading on the chicken was crispy and the epitome of perfection, and I really liked the prevalent furikake that added extra texture, crunch and saltiness. Yumm. My mouth waters just thinking about this katsu -- katsu is one of my favorite local dishes, but the furikake component just takes it to the next level. "Fried Rice Musubi": I think this is one of the only places on the island that features this unique musubi--and I actually haven't experienced it elsewhere--but let me tell you that this NO fried musubi is bom.com ! I love plain spam musubi, but since fried rice is one of my favorite local dishes, it was only fitting to have this musubi as part of my order. I loved the fried rice medley--there weren't too many ingredients, which is how I like my fried rice--and the whole ball is condensed and wrapped with that signature nori casing. "Potato Hash Patty": I loved the soft potato interior of this patty and was glad that I gave it a try. It sort of reminded me of a Japanese-style hash brown, and I would include it as part of my DIY plate lunch again. "Shrimp Tempura": This was the last item I ordered as part of my plate lunch. I love shrimp tempura, especially if it has a lot of batter on the exterior, and the version at NO was right on point. The shrimp-to-breading ratio was pretty even, and I liked how the batter was definitely crispy and crunchy, but not overly crispy. The shrimp itself was succulent and juicy. "Daily Bento": I have yet to try this daily bento, but on paper, it sounds absolutely amazing. It includes a dressed rice bottom, egg omelet and your choice of grilled spam, Portuguese or Kielbasa sausage, grilled fish, Kabocha pumpkin or gobo, and chicken (meat selection may vary). How ono! I'm not even sure which meat I would choose ... depending on the featured chicken, I may go for that, if not the sausage or grilled fish. Whatever meat I choose, however, I'm sure this combo is to die for. "Garlic Chicken": I love garlic chicken and I've only had it from a few spots on the island, just cause I usually can't bear to deviate from my chicken katsu staple. However, I'd love to try this NO version someday. "Fried Chicken": The perfect fried chicken consists of a savory, tender interior and sports a golden-brown, crispy exterior, so I'm excited to experience the version at NO. "Furikake Salmon": Salmon is one of my favorite types of fish, and it gets even better when coated in salty, crunchy furikake. Because I loved the furikake katsu from this place so much, I'm sure I would like the furikake salmon as well. "Kailua Pork and Cabbage": Kalua pork and cabbage is probably one of my favs, in terms of Hawaiian cuisine. I actually don't care much for cabbage as a whole, but when it's paired with kalua pork, it's a match made in heaven. Here's to hoping that the pork here is flavorful, tender and juicy ... can't wait to give it a try sometime. "Fried Tofu": While I love regular tofu, I absolutely love this soy product deep-fried as well. This would definitely be a component of my next plate lunch from NO. "Tofu Salmon Patty": This patty sounds interesting, based on its name alone--a salmon-tofu hybrid? Being that I do like salmon and I do like tofu, I would be willing to give this patty a shot. If it's similar to a normal, light fishcake, I'm sure I'll like it. (I'm sure I would like it, regardless of what it looks like ... it includes tofu!). "Portuguese Sausage Musubi": There are SO many different types of musubis at this okazuya, and I want to try them all. Since I like Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice, this musubi featuring Portuguese sausage sounds like it's right up my alley. "Furikake Musubi": I would have no complaints about trying this plainer, more traditional musubi because it includes a crunchy, salty furikake topping. "Shrimp Tempura Musubi": I'm guessing this musubi features one juicy, sufficiently breaded shrimp tempura in its interior. Winner winner!

Went for the first time in years. Still as authentic looking as you can get as far as okazuya is concerned. Got 3 musubis, furikake katsu, and gobo. The musubis were light but filling with not too much salt too interfere with the meat. The furikake katsu had plenty of taste and didn't need the extra sauce they usually ask you for. And the gobo also had lots of flavor and wasn't as sauce-soaked as most other okazuya places. Gotta come back some other time and try everything else. Only downside is that it's a little pricey, but coming here every now and then would be perfect.

The good, is the food the bad, parking unless you are lucky to get one in front or be prepared to walk a bit. I love eating at Okazuya's but of course the prices sometimes make me seek some place else to eat because I tend to have the "eyes are bigger than the stomach syndrome" hah but you couldn't tell with my small squinty eyes. At Okazuya's I tend to want almost everything yet my wallet and my stomach limits me, one tends to get empty while one gets overfull. I have always drove past here and since my parking is nearby I stop in every once in a while, I think as Okazuya's go from memory as well as food goes, This is like School Excursion time all over again! just like my Mom used to get for me when I had a Field Trip for School! No disappointments here. It is exactly what I remember from childhood the flavors the items and what not almost down to the plate except depending where my Mom used to go they used different plates. Anyway like I was saying the tast hasn't changed from when I was a kid the classic comfort foods the only thing is that the Chow funn noodles sometimes can be a bit oily depending on the day. Come on let's go have a Field Trip with me one day! (oh, and my wife's relatives were the original owners of this place although I don't know if I have eaten here when they owned it) The current owners I believe do a good job of keeping a classic Hawaii Okazuya.

Love Nuuanu Okazuya... and the service is great. I think it's Mark that is so helpful and friendly!! I was planning a picnic for my kid's preschool class and needing to order bentos close to the picnic location. I emailed Nuuanu Okazuya for pricing via their website. They responded within about 1-2 business days. To my surprise they offer a bento at $6 plus tax and was willing to do a kid's pack (musubi, shrimp tempura and a few pieces of their furikake chicken katsu) for $3.50 plus tax. WOW!! I couldn't believe how reasonable it was (considering when I go there for my family, I buy so much and it get so expensive). The bento was hefty though filled with a lot of rice. It did give a nice variety of different foods though. The kids enjoyed theirs and/or the spam musubis we also ordered ($1.50 plus tax). The reasonable pricing allows most families to be able to participate (instead of expensive restaurants) so it was nice to have a high participation rate. I prepaid for the whole order and gave them the date and time and when we showed up for pickup, it was all packed in boxes/bags ready to go with utensils and all. Great service!! As for their general okazuya, I've been there several times. My only complaint is the skin under the breading of the chicken katsu but otherwise everything is so delicious. Call them if you need help with bento orders or just stop in for yourself! This is more of a takeout place so don't expect to sit and dine.

It has been one hell of a week. A giant Yelp party to throw, my car breaking down, and running out of toilet paper! You laugh at the toilet paper but when this happens to you, not so funny! You're literally SOL. This series of events had my BF and I in quite the tizzy. After a very long appointment at the mechanic, we were in need of sustenance and I suggested we give Nuuanu Okazuya a go. I've always been a fan of okazuya fare and have fond memories of my father taking me to different ones as a little girl. We pulled up to Nuuanu Okazuya and were lucky enough to find street parking right away. I hopped out to get our plates made and looked into the glass window which displayed the food. The Good News: Nuuanu Okazuya a huge variety of choices. The Bad News: My brain is so tired that the last thing I need is to have to make any more decisions!!! Nooooooooooooo... I stood in front if the counter and had the worker make three different plates of food simultaneously. I knew what I wanted, but my BF's plate was another story all together. He always wants to eat healthfully and the majority of Okazuya food is fried or made of hot dogs & spam. Well that's why it tastes so good, yo! I filled his plate with musubi (white carbs), mochiko chicken (fried), teri hamburger (high sodium) and a green been dish (semi healthy but most likely stir fried in oil). Oh well, there goes his diet! Three plates came out to almost $30 and I also bought a cranberry crispy treat. Those were sooo yummy! I've made energy bars like this before but the ones sold at Nu'uanu Okazuya, which are made in the Big Island, are softer and made with sesame seeds and macadamia nuts. $5 might sound a bit steep but I have little time to bake these days! Great option if you're on Nu'uanu and now all they need is a 70 year old Japanese lady serving at the counter. I know it sounds silly, but that Obachan always makes everything taste better! Thanks to Chef John and the gang for catering my son's Graduation party. Everyone loved the menu and loved that your shop puts out great food. There was so much variety to order from that I have to remember this place for a future catering event. My son often stops by after work to get a plate lunch, and my husband loves your Fried Saimin. My favorite is the sauce on the Beef Teriyaki, and of course, the Shoyu Pork, like every good Okinawan should. Mark & Chef John helped me select the serving sizes, advising of proportions, and creating an affordable budget. Catering Menu: Rice, Fried Saimin, Cucumber Namasu, Shoyu Ahi, Shoyu Pork, Beef Teriyaki, Korean-style Karaage Chicken, Deep Fried Tofu with Sauce, and Mac Salad. Oh, can't forget the Andagi!

Okazuya on the spot! Ono, great variety, and the furikake chicken katsu melts away while you chew. So great to have a place to go that has reasonable prices and doesn't take your pocketbook away. My friend Bixby highly recommends this place and now, so do I.

Total hole in the wall that made me veggie hash patties special without butter...a tad bit salty but I love my salt so I don't mind...I love the furikake rice and the fried tofu had just enough kick... Needed a great breakfast before my shift and I definitely got my moneys worth and a damn good plate to satisfy me. Very polite people behind the counter :)

The staff here is so nice! Got to meet owner, Mark Kitagawa, Lynnette I think was woman at csh register and the andagi man, Jonathan. We ordered andagi for family gathering when my uncle passed away. They were very accommodating and so nice! We were able to pick up with no problems on Saturday. The andagi are delicious! We had chocolate macadamia, andadog, kabocha, sweet potato and traditional. The chocolate Mac was good but could only eat one as they were sweet in a good and dangerous way. The andadog was better than okinawan festival as they grill hot dog before they make it like a corn dog with andagi batter. My favorite was the sweet potato as there were bits of potato inside and gave it a great texture. I would not get kabocha again as it tasted the same as traditional. The traditional was as expected. We got some okazuya which was good but not as ono as andagi.

I got there at 6:30am just in time to beat the morning rush. It was my first time here, so I just stuck to the basics: Chow Fun - just okay, I thought it could've used more flavor so I ended up putting some Aloha shoyu on it. The best chow fun I've eaten is still at Toshi's on N. King street. Fried Saimin - GREAT. Noodles weren't mushy and just enough flavor but not too salty. Okinawan Shoyu Pork - I probably wont be able to go back and not order this, it was so delicious! Tender pieces of pork, soaked forever in their shoyu sauce. It went perfect with the fried saimin. The only thing was that it was pretty fatty but i guess that's what you expect with pork. Teri hamburger - I didn't care for the texture, it was almost gritty and crumbly instead of like a normal hamburger patty. The flavor was just okay, a sweeter style teriyaki. Konbu Maki - the flavor was great and the meat was tender inside but what I think was konyaku (bamboo shoot) inside threw me off at first but I ended up eating it anyway and it was good. Shoyu hot dog - I'm such a sucker for shoyu hot dog. They use the big kine, not just small kine oscar mayer, so good! Garlic Hash - It was nice and garlicky, but I didn't really care for the peas and carrots in it. I think next time I'll try the regular hash patty. My plate came out to almost $14, but it lasted me two meals so it was worth it. I can't wait to go back and try everything else!!!

I've always been a fan of this place, but I was a little disappointed this last visit. When I opened up my box, I found out that the guy forgot my furikake musubi but still charged me for it. My total came out to be $9.01 according to the cash register, so I paid that amount. But later I took a look at my receipt, in black&white the total read $8.00 with $.30 tax, hmmmm...... yelp.com/biz_photos/XX7M… My fried rice portion was smaller than usual: half a scoop, maybe 3-4 fork-full bites. It was tasty with the combined flavors of the portuguese sausage, smoky bacon, diced chicken, char siu and veggies.......but I would've appreciated the flavors even more, had they given me a decent scoop of that crack rice. Get the fried rice musubi instead, you'll get more bang for your buck: yelp.com/biz_photos/XX7M… yelp.com/biz_photos/XX7M… Egg Omelete was good, the chunks of spam in it gave it a nice texture. I like that it's savory and not the usual sweet Tamago (sweet egg omelete). The Crab Fishcake (imitation crab) was over-kneaded b/c it was tougher than usual. It was like eating a rubber ball......if I wasn't so hungry, I would've gave it a toss to see if the sucker would bounce. It's usually not this tough. Grilled Miso Chicken was flavorful, the miso drizzle was a nice touch. I wished the skin was crispier b/c it was a thick blob of fatty, undercooked skin and it made the chicken way too greasy. Mochiko chicken was greasy but it was still tasty. It had a nice sweetness to it, similar to Fukuya but the portion size was twice as much (Fukuya sells theirs in bite-size pieces).

Okazuya fare is expensive, but worth it if it tastes good! Nuuanu Okazuya serves the favorites and a good variety of fish, which is delicious! I love cone sushi and theirs is really fresh and flavorful. The kombumaki is delicious too! And I also love the kabocha, whether diced or in slices. Opens early and closes early - go early for greatest selection because they tend to sell out of favorites/best sellers. . .

I found out this place while getting a half off coupon from one of those daily deal sites. First off, this place only has street parking i believe. So parking might be a little tricky. Another thing about this place is that, they are opened 7 Days a week, unlike some other Okazyua places that are only open 4-5 days a week and only the times when you are on your way to work if you have a day job thats during normal business office hours. I visited this place about 3-4 times and each time I've been really happy with my food. They used to have this combo that included Chicken, Chowfun and something else. Also got the Hash, shoyu hot dog and they were pretty good. The number one item I love is their Furikake Chicken. Its just something how its prepared and cooked that I love alot. From the reviews recently, it looks like something has changed for the recent reviews have been below average, but the times I have went, the staff was friendly and food have been great.

I love this place! Friendly workers, great food, price depends on how much you pack your plate. I'm still one of those customers that have to point at what foods to add there's so much to choose from I can't remember what all the dish names are but you can never get bored with this place! This is the only place I go to for lunch while I'm at work even though zippys is right down the street.. Only thing is I wish they opened past 1pm. I always have to rush to go on my lunch break to get there before they close but the food is worth it.

It's my first time coming here and I was pretty excited since it's the closest "Okazuya" to my work place. I should have known better than to arrive around 2 pm since all I had left was the leftovers from the lunch rush. The food was all cold by then, well, in a way since they were still in the food tray heaters. HOWEVER, even though it's not fresh it's was still tasty. I'll have to come back earlier next time to have the food freshly made and then write an update. One thing though, I wasnt sure how many selections came with the regular plate but the person just kept asking what more did I want. I kept picking more items which turned out to be additional. Overall the bill came out to be a little over $9.

I would normally let this kind of stuff slide but every time I've gone here, I've experienced the worst customer service ever. There's usually a middle aged woman who's basically not smiling and very curt when she answers any questions you may have. Well I thought it was just her until I experienced a tattoo covered guy with the same demeanor! I really like their furikake chicken katsu but because of my experiences with these 2 workers, I won't be coming here anymore. Businesses need to know how their workers are treating their customers and customers are the sole reason why they exist. Treating customers like myself in such a rude manner is just unacceptable and customers deserve at least a smile and courteous service if they are going to dish out any $! I'm assuming that this is a family run business so they should be more sensitive to the customers who frequent there...enough said.

I'm a long time fan of Okazuya food..grew up with Kabuki in Aiea and I tend to judge all Okazuya based on pretty high expectations. Food: I'd go with 3.5 stars for food and would recommend one of their various chicken dishes such as the Chicken Katsu or Chicken Alice. Kombu Maki is pretty good but not as large as Gullick's. Their mac salad is so so but I just like the combination of the creamy mac salad against the normally salty flavors of okazuya food. They also have a good assortment of vegetarian selections which provides options for those looking to be more health conscious. Service: Normally quick, efficient, no nonsense. It helps if you know what you want and you know the dishes. They also have several cold dishes that you can ask for such as the mac salad, namasu, etc. which are located in their fridge. Atmosphere: Small shop, a couple small tables if you want to eat there but I normally take it to go. I usually stop by right around lunch time and I usually am able to park on the street right in front of the restaurant. Value: A little on the pricier side in my opinion, a full plate will set you back around $10 - $12 depending on what you order. Not many okazuya choices that provide a good selection later in the day as most places are wiped out by 11 am. I appreciate the Nu'uanu Okazuya will keep most of their dishes stocked till at least lunch time. Overall a good solid Okazuya choice in downtown that keeps me coming back every few months to satisfy my cravings.

My hunt for good okazuya food continues! I've always eyed this okazuya out because I see it everyday on my way to work. One Sunday morning, my husband and I decided to give it a try. They have a wide selection of items that is the typical okazuya fare. The prices are reasonable and there is only street parking. I tried: FURIKAKE MUSUBI - nothing special, but it fills that needed position of rice in your okazuya plate. CHOW FUNN - very tasty; I would say its the best chow funn out of all the okazuya places I've tried so far. CORNED BEEF HASH - it's the typical hash patty. Tender and also one of the items I have to get when I pick up food from an okazuya. FURIKAKE CHICKEN KATSU - if there is one reason why I would come back, it's for this! It's chicken katsu with a light, sweet sauce (reminiscent of a very thin and light teriyaki sauce). The sauce is not the usual katsu sauce you find at other eateries. Also, they cook the chicken katsu very well - not oily and has a nice crunch. While it is close by to home and work, which is super convenient, I think I need to continue the hunt for my go-to okazuya. Maybe, when I crave that furikake chicken katsu, I'll be back.

Five stars for food and five stars for service. I was looking for a place close by that served delicious and fast food, and Nuuanu Okazuya really surpassed my expectations. I recently moved back to HI from LA and have not been able to find food that really excites my palate, whether it be $---$$$$, but this place really makes me say YUM! I stopped in on a Tuesday around 9:30am and was the only customer at the time, a customer had just left as I walked in. I couldn't decide between the chow fun and the chow mein so the gentlemen at counter suggested I get half and half so that next time I know which one I like better, well now I know I like both! They do taste similar to each other just thin versus wide noodles, I like that they have a slightly peppery flavor to them. Fried rice musubi was really tasty, it didn't have a lot of stuff in it like veggies or onions but it had tiny diced up meat and lots of flavor. They also had three other flavors of musubi available. Shoyu pork was delicious, thinly sliced, marinated extremely well, slightly sweet but still salty, nice chew to it with some yummy gelatinous fat (I know it sounds kind of gross but, it's like eating kauyuk, you have to eat the fat then too!) Gobo, the chopping looks kind of crazy, like not the usual nice thin little slices but random shapes and sizes. But, the flavor and tenderness of the gobo really makes up for the interesting look of it. It tastes delicious and the gobo has a nice crunch to it without having the fiberous chewiness that gobo sometimes has. Furikake katsu, this was mentioned in a lot of other reviews and also was mentioned as the number one seller by the gentlemen at the counter. It's amazing, the sauce they use on the katsu is a lightly sweet and salty teriyaki sauce that's not too overpowering. They just slighly toss the katsu in it so the katsu doesnt get mushy and they chop it once you order it. Shoyu hot dog, can't really go wrong with a shoyu hot dog. Was on the saltier side but still yummy. At checkout with two sodas, my bill was $16, not bad at all since I ordered a ton. The lady checking me out also offered me a frequent buyers card, and the card is super adorable. I will definitely be back and I recommend anyone to try this place.

This place is a small hole in the wall place but worth checking out! Everything here is ala carte which is what okazuyas are all about. Must try their Nishime, cone sushi, shoyu hot dog and potato croquettes! Everything here reminds me of my Grandmas cooking! Very tasty and home style!

After Fasting for my physical at the Kuakini Medical Center. It was off to Nuuanu Okazuya for breakfast. Fried Saimin, Egg, Hash, Shoyu Hot Dog, Mochiko Chicken. Big Mahalo to John and staff for the ono food.

Okazu-ya Alert! Nelson Q. likes it here! K, I'll ignore the mahu-lani's on every street corner on Nuu'anu! I'll ignore that "Aunty" was grumpy after I asked her one too many questions! I'll ignore that they close at 1pm! But you know what? This place is surprisingly yummy... NUU'ANU OKAZUYA! I've had my share of top quality & homey Okazuya! From the legendary ones in Hilo, to the posh ones in Japantown SF, to the half dozen in Kaimuki & Kalihi, but I haven't tried this place until now. Probably because they have old school, early-kine hours, and well, that 215-lb. linebacker mahu-lani sure the heck scares me! On my errand day in Downtown I'm suddenly craving a meaty snack on my way to the gym. Hey, don't judge! Then I remember this place that always seems to be closed when I'm in the area and with all those schizo reviews... Hey! Why not! NUU'ANU OKAZUYA! What?! It's open! Mahu-lani and friends on the corner! All good! I'm not here for a date, but for a piece of chicken, yo! I walk in and see two aunties scooping the ono finger foods. I Immediately notice the large selection of meats, noodles, rice - all the good stuff us macho local guys crave! But I refrain from ordering a typical 3-plus plate since I'm headed to the gym. I order... TERI-BURGER! SHOYU CHICKEN! CONE SUSHI! The Teri-burger was so manini tiny and I wasn't impressed by that fact, but the flavor was there! The Shoyu Chicken was a piece of thigh and nicely marinated- definitely a win! The Cone sushi was fresh and the way it should be. Overall I was satisfied with my "pre-workout snack". It came out to about $5 for this mini of a plate which is about average for Okazuya! The regular plate would prob run you in the $8-$10 range. The place is somewhat cramped, but efficient. You walk in, order & point what you want, pay the Aunty and sit at the only two-seated table or take it to-go. Complimentary Nuu'anu tap water in the orange cooler! All good! Yup, I recommend... NUU'ANU OKAZUYA! l'll ignore grumpy Aunty, I'll ignore the spooky mahu-lani's, I'll ignore the bad reviews by spoiled kids under 21-years old, who btw have no clue what a real Okazu-ya is all about! Yup, this place gets my Big Kahuna seal of approval! Eh, my Cuz, Kimo S. is a regular here, so must be ono... Unless he likes hanging around the linebackers! Brian M. no be scared of the "lady" with the Adam's Apple! She no bite! Well... OVERALL GRADE: 4.0-STARS! (Solid) LIVE ALOHA... YELP REVIEW #348

I come here at least once a month. It's an ok okazuya with a lot of new selections I don't see much of. I usually get some fishcake tempura & a garlic chicken. They are quite expensive but convenient. Free ample street parking right on Nuuanu. A cheaper alternative would be Toshi's Delicatessen in Kalihi :)

The salmon fish was overcooked and therefore dry :( Pretty pricy for lunch! However, I do enjoy the novelty of trying different foods and picking and choosing them individually!

I thought the food was ok and the selection was wide. I'm not sure if this is quite characteristic of okazuya food but it was all very cold. The fish was just a little warm. Then again, everything was sitting out there for a while. Anyway, I got the chicken long rice ($1.75), cone sushi ($1.25), steamed uhu ($4.50), a fried chicken thigh ($2.50), BBQ sparerib ($2.25), and a scoop of rice ($.80). Everything was just alright, and I liked the cone sushi the best. I liked that they accepted credit cards.

Ever since my first time a year ago, I've been here a bunch since it's convenient for me. Same 4 stars, price is on the steep side, but the selection is pretty vast and you may use a credit/debit card, plus they offer gift cards. Faves: - Nori Chicken - Fishcakes (there's several types to choose from, e.g. chives) - Squash with Chicken & Tofu ($1.80) - Green Beans, Veggies with Garlic ($1.85) - Nishime (portion is small for $2) - Shoyu Chicken ($1.75 for one chicken thigh in bone) Other (still decent and worth trying): - Baked Okinawan Potato ($0.80) - Baked Kobocha (squash/pumpkin) - Stuffed Konbu (aka kobu maki; seaweed stuffed w/ pork..) ($2.15 -- pricey but it's a lot of work to make this, so it's worth it) They also sell pre-packed bentos and musubis. They also bring in these deliciously addicting cranberry energy bars that are homemade by someone from Papaikou on the Big Island. My big lunch/breakfast today was $10.84. I normally spend about $9 for a mix of dishes for a whole meal here. Wish they had more healthy options, like some raw or steamed dishes, but still, the selection is really good. The young guys who work the counter aren't the most attentive, the older guys are great.

Came here to grab some breakfast after finding out they open at 5AM. Read some of the reviews, sounded like a great place, stopped by. The first thing I noticed is that the space is pretty crowded with three customers in there and that there was a lot of food sitting out in the window. There were two girls working, one packing all the food (she seemed less than thrilled to be explaining what the different foods were) and one ringing me up (she was very nice and knew what she was doing). I ended up spending $9 on decent long rice that was either burned or dried out in patches, a shoyu hot dog that didn't sit in the soy sauce long enough, a piece of saba that somehow had most of the oily moistness cooked out of it, a giant cone sushi that had various hard chunks of too-sour rice in it, and the two saving graces of my plate, the yummy slice of kabocha and the shoyu tofu. All in all, not that impressed with what I got and what I paid for it. Wouldn't go back again.

Been here a few times since my first review. WARNING: Don't come here unless you're really hungry and willing to drop some big dollars. The prices have gone up. I think my small piece of steamed fish went up to $6. It's crazy. I also got a piece of mahi mahi and that probably was $5 and fried noodles and 2 musubis'. The total came out close to $18!!! You must be thinking..."no way"...but I say, "YES, WAY"! With all the big pieces of fish they had on those 2 plates, seemed like I got the smallest one. With that said, I better start making my own steamed fish from now on. The only good thing about this place is that they have a big selection of food to choose from. Sadly now, I have to wash dishes for my brother to pay him back for covering the cost of my food. **While eating my food, I noticed that they didn't clean the fish well enough. I found some guts inside. I couldn't bring myself to finish my lunch.

Shoyu pork was delicious, thinly sliced, marinated extremely well, slightly sweet but still salty, nice chew to it with some yummy gelatinous fat (I know it sounds kind of gross but, it's like eating kauyuk, you have to eat the fat then too!) I found out this place while getting a half off coupon from one of those daily deal sites.

The chef made dumplings and chicken just for me!! Love the service and great tasting food, reasonable prices too. Great for pick up and go!!

Opens early and closes early - go early for greatest selection because they tend to sell out of favorites/best sellers. . .
