Hole in the wall place located next to royal kitchen. Family owned business. They are super friendly. Their chicken katsu is delicious... probably the best item on their menu. I also like their cheese burgers. There's just something about their homemade patties. Prices are pretty cheap.

I come here often and their food as is A-ok. There cleanliest isn't good at all. I love the chicken katsu. The BBQ chicken is bland. The lady who works there is very nice.

Had Mongolian beef and BBQ chicken last night. I confess, neither tasted like what I expected but both were very good. The Mongolian was a bit sweet (thankfully, not like sweet and sour crap). The BBQ chicken tasted more like teriyaki-light. We liked both. So cheap too at $11 for two small orders that were more than enough for the two of us. The lady working the counter was very friendly and answered all our questions about the various dishes. Hard to beat the cost of this place -- and it's just two blocks from our place :-)

Yay! I'm a fan of their chicken katsu! No, I'm not a fan of their shoyu chicken (#1 on their menu). I feel generous today since it's valentine's day and their chicken katsu definitely deserves a solid 4. However, 4 stars because their chicken katsu is superior to any chicken katsu I've ever tasted in my life! the katsu sauce is really good, the chicken is good quality, fried to a perfection and not too oily. It is made fresh--well, I'm assuming that's why we had to wait. You can order mini plates, which is good enough for me (and my bf) and the total was under $10!!!!! That is INCREDIBLE for food in Hawaii. Denise's tip: order your food to go and walk around and enjoy the wonders of the Chinese Cultural Plaza! There's cool trinkets and earrings! :)

I'm a love it or hate it guy, and this is a place that I love. This is absolutely one of the best places to eat on Oahu when it comes to BBQ Chicken. I'm not sure how the other plates are because I only order one plate! My full order consists of the BBQ Chicken plate with fried rice, and of course, a diet coke since I'm watching my manly figure. The fried rice is pretty plain by itself, but when that BBQ Chicken oil drips down to it...it's heaven. Oh yes, did I mention it's cheap?

I've eaten here once and had the char siu chicken (see photo). It was pretty filling and the price cannot be beat. I had a mini plate so it's even more affordable for $4.55. It came with the Chinese style bbq chicken x rice x mac salad. The lady at the counter was nice like the other reviewers said, and she was amenable to answering my questions about the dishes. I had been eyeing the lemon chicken but when I saw that they had char siu in chicken form, rather than pork, I just had to try it. I was pleased with it but didn't like the skin all up in it. Maybe the dish can be requested to be cooked without it. Besides the great prices, I like how it's not hot plates of old food sitting around decomposing and being served all cold and stale. When I placed my order they actually cooked my dish and I waited. I used that time to go to the liquor store around the corner (towards the Chinese mall) to get a root beer (only 75¢). There's seating inside, but if you want to enjoy the weather, there's plenty of seating outside too where there's chess boards on the tables. I gave only 4 starts cuz of that skin...but I plan to go back and try the lemon chicken, or some other tasty sounding dish, and see if there's an extra star in my pocket. Update (1/14/11): I've been back several times and I'm actually a little disappointed (I'm taking back one star, thank you very much). I tried the lemon chicken and although I liked the meat portions, I didn't like the taste. I don't know what it was, the sauce...or maybe the oil they used to cook it? But there was a bitterness and aftertaste I didn't like. I felt kinda sick after eating here that very day. But in their defense, just before eating that lemon chicken I did have this melon drink and a char siu bun while I was in Chinatown...so maybe my stomach wasn't happy with all this mish mosh of food I was shoving down my pie hole. I went back one last time and tried the bbq chicken. It was okay I guess, but not something I'd probably get again. I guess my expectation wasn't met as I was craving bbq chicken like the one cooked on a grill and dripping with some sweet honey, molasses type sauce...this isn't what I got but the typical plate lunch type of bbq. So I can't fault them for that, it's just my expectation wasn't met like I said. I feel like I owe them one more shot though so let's see what I order that day...

Really good, really crunchy fried chicken! Always super moist. The fried rice is decent too, a bit salty. The bbq chicken is full of hoisin sauce, should be called hoisin chicken instead. Chicken katsu is only so-so, kinda close to L&L style. Prices are pretty good, $5-$8.

I love this restaurant formerly known as "Kevin's" when I use to live in Hawaii but when went back in 2008 they changed the name but I still got my favorite dish "chicken katsu" and order of French fries. The macaroni salad bought back great memory of my childhood memory. Hope to return soon for many more great food.

Great food, and the lady who takes my order is very nice. Prices are very affordable to me and they give me Lot's of food. If u see it and Ur hungry, don't hesitate!!! Go for it! Update: i go their less often now. i have found many more places to eat that is way better than kents. but it doesnt mean that its not awesome. but after a while the food is just very greasy. the chickenkatsu which is my regular is the favorite thing there. there locomoco/hammbersteak is not that great at all the gravy and meat dont work together at all. all of their other foods is very salt. like pork chops and garlic shrimp. i only come hear when i have spare money and im just starving. if not ill go some where else hahaa 2nd Update: lol every time i show up i get smaller and smaller portions. lol its so saddening D: even tho its cheap i want a good quantity like i had before. i really love the food. it taste really good . but the strange i found out is that if i eat it when its hot. i get full alot faster. but when i eat it cold its nothing. xD

I've been coming here for years and I believe the prices have never changed. One of the cheapest places on the island in my opinion. I have to admit quality has gone down but they have a huge menu and u get a good amount of food even on the mini plate. Burgers and fries are great, they have that homemade flavor. My personal favorite is the oyster chicken on cake noodle. More of a quantity rather than quality kind of place but I've been coming here since I was a kid and love the to talk with the owners when I stop by for some lunch.

Tried their cake noodle and fried chicken. Cake noodle was so so, only had some chicken and gravey. No greens at all. At least the portion was huge. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy. Its similar texture to supermarket fried chicken, but much much better. The seasoning is just right and not that much chemicals/msg that makes you suck right after eating supermarket fried chicken. The mac salad is so-so. Its creamy enough to coat your mouth, but very little flavor. Will prob try their chicken katsu one day.

I agree with Squid S. You really can't beat the prices at Kent's. It's located on the river side of the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, on the side closest to Kukui Street. It's a take-out place with lots of good local and Chinese lunch items. The woman who works the counter (I'm pretty sure she's the owner) is very friendly and hard working. Even though I only order from there every few months, she remembers me with a smile and greeting every time I come by to pick up my order. I really like their shrimp with black bean sauce and beef with choy sum.

It's a small place where the "today's special" sign has been there for years. I would go as far as saying the food here is better than L & L with much more selection, however, the one thing that sets Kent's Drive Inn apart is their prices - you can get a mini BBQ chicken for $3.50, the only other place that's like that is L & R (yep 'R') in Kaneohe. Another thing to note is that if you smoke, plan to lose a few cigarettes to the homeless people along river street/college walk. I lit up my smoke and not even 10 secs later someone asked for one, and then a lady walked up to me and said "I know you just gave him one, but can I bum a smoke? .............. can I bum a light?" Horray for cheap food!

i used to frequent this place before i had a car. i passed it on my way to the bus stop on the way to work and back, it's in a super sketchy area, and looks like a hole in the wall, but once you eat here you'll be pleasantly surprised. they have TONS of selection, you can get anything from a burger and fries to garlic shrimp to chinese food. in my opinion, much better than l & l, and the lady who works there is sooooo nice. she always remebered me and always greeted me so warmly. i used to eat the NY steak, which came with a super hearty portion, two scoops of rice and mac salad. the steak was always perfectly seasoned. i also used to get the garlic shrimp, they give alot of shrimp and they're pretty large too! very very tasty, but with the shell on, so beware... i've also had a burger on occasion, and remember it being pretty good.
