I found the Honolulu Tavern by searching for "dart bar" and was not misled. The bar-front is in one room and there's a larger back-room that has four dart-boards and karaoke. Hang out long enough and you'll get to meet the owner and play a game or two with him. Staying at the Aqua Waikiki Wave this was the closest and best bar; I wish I could drop by every weekend.

Tiny, trashy, and without the slightest hint of pretentiousness. The chairs don't match, the glasses don't match, there's only one bathroom that is often occupied, and you probably wouldn't want to see this bar with the lights on. All that said, It's the perfect hole in the wall for having fun, singing your guts out, and still being able to carry on good conversation with your company. The best part of the Tavern is that it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Cheap beer, friendly bartenders, and free karaoke (but do tip your KJ!) where you typically get to sing two songs back to back before moving onto the next person. If there was one complaint, it's that the sound system is pretty old and sometimes hard to hear--the owner repeatedly turns down the volume citing neighbors who threaten to call the police. This often makes it difficult to "get lost in your favorite song," but it's just part of the deal. And many of the songs in the selection book aren't actually available (those discs disappeared along with an old KJ). But there's still a broad enough selection that you should find SOMETHING to sing. Moreover, when you're hungry, owner Byron will make you a fantastic fresh hoagie--the best thing to wash down with your pint of cheap beer. I usually have a great time whenever I head here. Weekends are obviously the busiest, but the place is open for drinks and singing every night. If you're really wanting to sing lots, go on a weeknight when not many others are singing. Otherwise, sidle up to the bar to grab a beer, then head back to Byron's Playroom to listen to singers of all different skill levels while you wait for your name to be called. Everyone seems to be friendly here, and you can really just let down and be yourself. All in all, I've paid way more money and had far less of a good time at other places. Give the Tavern a shot!

This is a dive bar in a seedy area of Waikiki. I dropped by to get a cold beer and grabbed a stool at the bar. Lots of older guys sitting at the bar (around 50 to 60 years old). Most of them were sharing stories about Hawaii in the 1970s. Before my time, so I chose to watch ESPN. There was one younger guy, who was trying to ask the young, female bartender for her number. Finished my beer and hit another bar.

A real dive. Full of people who seem to live here. Not really my kind of place but others seem to like it.

This dive bar is awesome! I celebrated my birthday there last year, very easy and mellow for anyone. This place have two rooms: one that have a bar that looks like a classic local bar from the show called "Cheers". All wood table and high stool chairs. The other room where you walked in from the back that lead you to awesome darts (they got 3 dart machine maybe 4) and combined with a public karaoke! This place also have food! Parking is a hassle to find unless you're lucky. There parking on street or paid parking in the building.

Solid bar, cozy, just drink and watch TV. Good drink specials. New owners, so no Italian sandwiches but the BLT is worth a shot. Quiet during the day.

I went to have a mai tai, since I am in Waikiki. Bartender was friendly, and the drink was just $3 during happy hour. They also serve bar food like chicken tacos. Perfect afternoon stopover.

After many years of "using" Yelp to find good spots, I finally took the plunge and created a Yelp account just so I could write about The Honolulu Tavern. It's been like 5 years since I've been there and the place is still on my mind, that should tell you something right there. I believe it was the spring of 2009 when I visited here, so keep in mind that the place may have changed a bit since then but hopefully it's even better! (if possible) I was visiting Hawaii for the first time and had joined up with a friend and his family for the 7-day trip. We were staying in Waikiki so the walk from the hotel to the Honolulu Tav wasn't bad at all. We spent the first couple days of the trip exploring all around the area and went to a ton of different spots both good and bad. Once we finally stumbled upon (literally) this place, we came back every day for the rest of our stay there. Not only did they have some of the best deals in town but they were always open late, it was never crowded and unlike most of the bars in the area, it was a rare douche-free zone. So all of that would already make it stand out as a quality joint but there's more. As a previous reviewer mentioned, there's this infectious quirky element to the place that must stem from the staff and then wonderfully entangle all its patrons. Once you've spend a few night's there drinking and singing some seriously divey karaoke with the awesome locals, off-the-grid tourists and hilarious staff, you actually kind of feel like family. If I ever go back to Hawaii, I really want to see the other islands but it will be extremely difficult not to justify a pit-stop in Waikiki just to experience this place again.

Ever since Honolulu Tavern now has a new owner, what a difference! She has completely upgraded the place. I now have a new place where I can play pool and not worry about roaches creeping up on me. Love taco Tuesdays!

A cool dive bar in Waikiki. Drinks are cheap, clientele mostly older regulars, darts, jukebox, and pool table. Problem is it's in Waikiki, so no parking. Not a very large selection of beers or liquors.

    (4)
  • Scott K.

By far Waikiki's weirdest bar... and I'm not going to elaborate on that because I want to be welcomed back. I will say that you'll want to be drunk, and prepared for the impossible. Mmm... and also... never mention that it's weird to anyone there... they don't seem to be aware of it's unique properties? I'm said too much!

I guess I am a contrarian or something. I am giving my second one-star review to a place with a four-star average. Honolulu Tavern is tough to like. Last time I was there I left an almost full beer because the place is just depressing. I let a buddy talk me into going back for karaoke tonight but that was interrupted by some downer drunk who decided to barricade himself in the bathroom and break the light fixture and door--classy place huh. It is really run-down and poorly planned. there is no air conditioning and because the coolers are really old sometimes the beer is barely cool. The prices are high for a dive bar, like a PBR is $2.75. I guess it is trying to attract a mix of locals and tourists, but because there is so little attention to upkeep, it sort of inspires people with nothing better to do, to destroy the place. If you want to watch the barricaded drunk, here is the video: youtube.com/watch?v=w9O5…

First off, Scott K. hit it on the nose. Pinned the tail on the donkey, bullseye! Hehe, you get the picture. Here we have the epitome of dive bars. Lots of crazy but super friendly people, great food, and enough women hanging out to make it easy on the eyes. There are two sections to the bar. The original section is a small counter-style bar with a larger back section which features karaoke, pool tables, and darts. The drink prices are very reasonable, especially for Waikiki. Food is also very reasonably priced and pretty good. The owner of the bar owned a chain of Hoagie places in San Francisco that he sold before moving to Hawaii. The hoagie I tried was extremely tasty! Come here if you're looking for a good time to relax and have a drink or 10. They will welcome you with open arms. Well they did for me at least.

Stopped here to sing a song to the birthday boy, he knew of this place. Drink was okay. Looks like a lot of regulars, some sketchier looking then others. The karaoke lady was very nice but a little eccentric for me. I was voted to sing Sweet Home Alabama for the birthday boy since he was from Alabama. A gentleman got so excited that the song started so I told him he could sing with me on a different mic. I don't know if he was trashed (it was only 8pm) but he slurred every single word. I probably won't be returning here, it just wasn't my vibe. They do have dart boards if you like to play. Kind of dirty on the inside and the decor was off the wall. Couldn't decide on Hawaiian theme, sports theme, country theme, or just pool hall.

This place is really great. My friends and I came here two nights in a row as to avoid the typical Waikiki tourist traps. It's tucked around the corner from the main drag in a hotel, and you can just tell it's a local spot. The lovely French bartender (who I don't think I ever caught her name) was excellent! She remembered all of our names the second night we were there. She gave us exceptional service and definitely made us feel at home. If you go on one of the busy nights (i.e. Friday), you will definitely run into some, uh, local characters, but that's okay. It just makes it more fun!

Good chill spot. I only go if Traci &/or Denise are working. They are really friendly if you are the same.

  • Tiffany H.

Horrible. They took away the hosted karaoke and brought in a machine so the huge crowd rhat used to go now go to Big Kahuna's to sing and drink. They are down to one dart board from three. There is now a pool table. Still the one filthy restroom inside and people go in there and do drugs. You risk getting impaled by a dart if you go to the restroom. At least 2 drug dealers hang out there and one of them is homeless. The owner dates a cop and she still allows the drug dealers to come in. Lots of old people go. People People do drugs inside and outside of bar of the street. They took away the yummy huge sandwiches that the former owner used to have. There are way nicer places with cheaper drinks and dollar taco night and better customers. Only the local Waikiki bottom dwellers who live nearby go here. Yeah most of them are friendly and will gladly help out any young female who strays in.

My wife and I made this our home tavern when we came to Waikiki for our 25th wedding anniversary. It's just a regular little bar with friendly patrons that made us feel at home. A nice place to stop, have a few and shoot the shit with the regulars. Loved it and hope to belly up to the bar again real soon.

I passed this place a couple of times and finally decided to stop and order a maitai. 3bux for a maitai isn't bad. It's your hole-in-the-wall bar. The people are friendly and laid back. One night I had too much fun here with karaoke. The locals are cool. They help me get back to my room. I love this lil place. The ppl are from all walks of life and it gives the place character.

A great chill place to come after work for a little pau hana with coworkers or friends. the place is connected to another larger room with karaoke and couches and has a real down home feel. i like coming here because it's small, intimate and the prices aren't so bad for beer and cocktails.

  • Amber W.

My new favorite karaoke bar in Waikiki. It's like being in someone's living room, complete with living-room like setup (old rattan chairs and coffee tables), big tv (for karaoke) and Christmas tree (seasonal, I think). Crazy mix of people: military, local, old tourists, young tourists, scary dudes, cute dudes, professionals, yuppies, blue collar, strung out... You get the picture. This is the kind of place where some people hang out all night, while others come in, have one drink and sing one song and leave. The drinks are cheap and the karaoke is free. The song books are well organized and there's actually a host here, so you don't have to drunkenly fumble with a machine and punch in the wrong number and get Tool's "Stinkfist" instead of Dolly & Kenny's "Islands in the Stream".

Complete hole in the wall with drunks at the bar and all! I've only been here during the day on a Sunday, but new what I was getting into. Good beer on tap, off the beaten path of Waikiki, not for tourists but definitely a local establishment. Cheap beer and good Happy Hour. Stop in for a quick drink then hit Waikiki for more of a night out.

  • Kevin W.

HAPPY HOUR! Great small dive bar in the main Waikiki area. Located inside a hotel. Service was great. The back bar area is bigger. Has a pool table, dart board, and jukebox. Happy Hour was from 3-6pm. Rolling Rock was $3. Jameson shots was $5. Awesome deal for drinks!

  • Mimi F.

The Tavern is a second home to me. Everyone is so friendly and quirky and so full of love. The drinks are great, the food is pretty good (make sure you stop by Tuesday nights from 7pm-10pm for $1 tacos), and the staff will crack you up. Seriously, if you're over the nightclub scene, this will be your new favorite bar. Personal problems aside, the Tavern is a great place, evolving and changing into something greater than anyone expected.

If you google image "dive bar" this may just be the first place that pops up. My husband liked it more than I did, but it did get more ...entertaining... as the evening went on. Some sketchy "activities" going on with the regulars, no question. While I won't go into detail, use your imagination. Trust me, it's that and more. No beer on tap, low end bottled beer, although they did have Kona Longboard, nightly drink specials, and $3 Rolling Rock. You can leave your "shot ski" home. Yep, they've got one!

  • Jennifer R.

Stopped in the Honolulu Tavern with glowing reviews from Yelp on a Tuesday night. Was looking forward to shooting some pool, playing the jukebox, and having some drinks in an unassuming dive bar. Walked into a bar area smaller then my living room with bad 70s rock playing on a stereo. Ordered a Stoli and soda for $6 and sat in the corner. Bartender was friendly enough, but I felt like the regulars stared us down. "You're not local! You're not local!" I had one drink and left. I'm pretty sure everyone in the bar talked shit about us when we left. I can deal with this crap in SoCal.

I asked a friend of mines "I wanna go to the most trashiest dive bar in Waikiki, any suggestions?" - he pointed out to me, HONOLULU TAVERN. My friends and I went in there for some drinks, shots and we got loud. We were singing to Taylor Swift and my friend ended up slapping some guys ass who bent over.. lol and he wanted more. TINY, TRASHY, CHEAP DRINKS - This tavern doesnt pretend to be anything else.. it was good time. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the "BEACHY" shot tasted really disgusting, somewhat like fruity toilet water, but it was only $2 so you cant really go wrong - but I would avoid that shot if possible. Until Next Time - Aloha!

A small bar with a karaoke room! My boyfriend and I made a quick stop here to get a few shots and were surprised with how cheap the shots were. Half the price of what we'd pay for in L.A! We didn't get to see the karaoke room only because we don't really like singing in public but it did sound like everyone was having a blast! A bar with cheap drinks and good service gets 4 stars from me!

Our group came and was not served food for 3 hours. Understaffed, poor quality. I would never recommend it.

Super divey spot. Tons of locals. Cheap beer. Darts. Pool. Some sketchy people but all good bars have those.

A real dive. Full of people who seem to live here. Not really my kind of place but others seem to like it.

A great chill place to come after work for a little pau hana with coworkers or friends. the place is connected to another larger room with karaoke and couches and has a real down home feel. i like coming here because it's small, intimate and the prices aren't so bad for beer and cocktails.
